Happy Halloween!
For Halloween, I've taken the blog's Bee Logo and modified a few parameters to give it a touch of spookiness. It now sports orange fuzz, green-tinted wings, glowing eyes (like a jack-o-lantern) and violet eyes and mandibles. There's also a flourish of leaves to keep the image autumnal. The Mantis Logo is included here too, as spectral Mantids (a reference to the Ghost Mantis - Phyllocrania paradoxa) floating around the orange Bee head. Going forward, this logo will be included in Halloween related posts, and earlier posts have been updated to feature this bit of artwork. It seems appropriate to add this little touch to celebrate the season. Furthermore, I may adjust logo parameters again for other holidays, but that's a post for another time. Still not much I can do about the positioning of the ocelli without a total logo overhaul.

Fandom ask: Elementary (Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock Holmes)
Modern adaptation, set in the USA (?), with a female Watson (Lucy Liu)(she might do martial arts? She fights?) and female Moriarty (Natalie Dormer). It's kinda funny? There is a tortoise? Sherlock names a kind of bee after Watson.
That's all I know :'D

Stuff I learned June 3-23
so I fell asleep earlier after posting about my scrushy crawlnut migraine times, and woke up a lil bit ago, still migrainily.
I took some Advil, Tylenol, water, and now I can tell you guys about the day I had. (Might be a contributing factor to a hurty brain. i took in a lot of information.)
Under the cut: what I learned today about the uses of kudzu (it evolved to be used plentifully by humans, which is why it grows so quickly and abundantly!), plastic upcycling, and the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland.
I learned a great deal about the uses of kudzu, in the process of educating a friend about it. Kudzu has been used as a form of erosion control and to enhance the soil. As a legume, it increases the nitrogen in the soil by a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. It’s used in many food dishes, including as a jelly from the flowers (which apparently tastes like grape jelly), a starch, and a tea. The starch is flavoured as a summer drink in Vietnam, and used as a thickener like cornstarch.  Nearby bee colonies may forage on kudzu nectar during droughts as a last resort, producing a low-viscosity red or purple honey that tastes of grape jelly or bubblegum. (I want to try this so bad!) It’s used in traditional medicines, and has a lot of food nutrition. It’s used as a fibre for baskets. Clothing, and paper usage. Soap, lotions, and ethanol. It’s super duper useful. This was before I even got to work, I learned all this knowledge.
At work, a coworker rushed out of the donation centre to show us a book about the tour at the the Wieliczka Salt Mine in the town of Wieliczka, near Kraków in southern Poland. Holy heck you guys! The sculptures! The art carved directly into salt! The history! Never in my dreams would I have imagined that humans had created this as a thing, without being shown. I did not take photos of the book, but I will add them tomorrow when I’m back at work. There’s a historical tour of how the first miners mined the salt, the tools and structures for support they had, there’s a green lake! :D
THEN, there are the carvings and the grand halls and the tunnels. Finally, the WAYS that the salt erupts from the walls and surfaces: in stalactites, stalagmites, King’s Hair curls, crystals, and amazingly geometric shapes. When you think “salt mine”, most people think of the salt deserts in the US (or at least, the three customers in the store that I pestered to look at the book all said this.)
ADDITIONALLY, today I talked with a customer who comes in every weekend about cleaning up plastics from the Great Lakes. He’s a photographer, and doing a work right now based on that, so we discussed the uses of plastics as recycled/upcycled products, which I’d watched multiple videos on last night and in the morning. Brothers Make, a southern UK based business run by brothers Jonny and Matt, gather plastic trash from the beaches (and have it collected by friends and family) and turn it into furniture, jewelry, and useful tools.
“In 1950, 2.5 billion people produced 1.5 million tonnes of plastic. In 2016,  7 billion people produced over 320 million tonnes of plastic.
- sas.org.uk (2020)“
Their YouTube channel has a ton of videos on the things they’ve made along with the fascinating process of cleaning, shredding, melting and molding plastic, along with how you can do it at home!

Log Entry Earth Date 22/12/2022:
Some of us were sent bee asks. Ivy had a lot of books on bees.
Jonny and Ivy were barking at eachother.
Jonny and Ivy were threatened with being microwaved. Again.
Jonny has not been put in a dishwasher or a blender.
Tim and Jonny were given song recommendations.
Brian wants another bot to be friends with and watch movies with, etc. A stowaway pointed out he has friends to watch movies with, which much of the crew agreed with. Brian, Jonny, Marius and Tim ended up watching a movie together.
Why is the cat doing laundry.
Lyfrassir’s ship has arrived. Ae were given a tour by Brian.
Tim was asked about her dream wedding. Brian offered to help plan it.
Brian does not know what Goncharov (1973) is. The stowaway(s) that mentioned it then explained it to them. They left out one key detail though. (It does not exist).
Tim was dared to talk like a fish for 20 minutes. They succeeded at this dare.
Ivy was forced to talk about their feelings toward Jonny and Lyfrassir, much to her dismay.
Tim’s fursona is a wolf.
Raphaella was also gifted some armor, from Marius presumably.
Upon finding out they both saw the gifts, Marius went to hide in his room for awhile.
The stowaways called Ivy a coward for procrastinating answering the ask about Jonny and Lyfrassir.
Völuspá, Lyfrassir’s ship, made a blog.
Some of the stowaways have been pestering Ivy about Jonny.
Mono, the stowaway, made a blog.
Aurora’s favorite constellation is Lyra.
Völuspá likes playing word games with Lyfrassir, while Lyfrassir is busy with us, she’s been busying herself with emoticon art.
Mono is still mortal.
When they are alone in the crawlspace, Mono mostly talks to themselves.

Just in from IDW: six comic book projects are in various stages of development from the publisher, including...
BACCHUS -- Will Davies (Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, Man Vs. Bee, How to Train Your Dragon) and Chloe Moss (Switch, Hollyoaks) will write and Executive Produce the series which is based on Eddie Campbell’s subversive drama that drops the gods of ancient Greece into present day as if they had never left.  Campbell’s graphic novel, published by IDW imprint Top Shelf Productions, imagines what the Gods of our past might be doing in present day among mere mortals.  Bacchus’ development will be shepherded by IDW’s Vice President of Live-Action, Jonny Gutman and Director of Live-Action, Julie Winograd. Representing Will Davies is UTA, 42, and Jackoway, Austen, Tyerman, Wertheimer, Mandelbaum, Morris, Bernstein, Trattner & Klein, and representing Chloe Moss is 42.
DRAGON PUNCHER & SPOONY – Holly Huckins (Recess, Angela Anaconda, Sheriff Callie) is set as Showrunner and Executive Producer for the series based on the book Dragon Puncher by James Kochalka (Johnny Boo, Glork Patrol, and Monkey vs. Robot), published by IDW imprint Top Shelf Productions.  The Eisner Award-winning comedy adventure chronicles the exploits of Dragon Puncher, a cute but rather ruthless kitty who dons his heroic armored battle suit as he punches out evil dragons together with sidekick Spoony (a fuzzy little friend armed with a wooden spoon). Daniel Kendrick, Senior Director of Kids, Family and Animation will head up development on behalf of IDW. Representing Huckins in the deal is The Gotham Group.
KORGI – Aury Wallington (Spirit Untamed, Spirit Riding Free, Veronica Mars, Heroes and Gravity Falls) joins as show runner for the television series based on writer-artist Christian Slade’s beloved dog opus that follows the stories of a Korgi pup in epic fairy tales of adventure.  A fantasy world filled with creatures both adorable and abominable, Korgi is a coming-of-age tale about the friendship between a young fairy and her magical puppy as they uncover the secret history of their homeland and face evil monsters threatening their idyllic community. punches out evil dragons together with sidekick Spoony (a fuzzy little friend armed with a wooden spoon). Daniel Kendrick will head up development on behalf of IDW. Wallington is represented in the deal by Epicenter LA and APA.
LODGER – Max and Adam Reid (Gil’s All Fright Diner, Aeon Flux, Sneaky Pete) will serve as Showrunners and Patricia Riggen (The 33, Dopesick) will direct the psychological thriller based on David and Maria Lapham’s IDW-published graphic novel of a young woman bent on revenge against a serial killer who she blames for the murder of her mother and incarceration of her father. A dark, grimy game of cat and mouse in the best tradition of crime noir, Lodger is a twisted love story set against a tangled American landscape. All three will Executive Produce the series along with Matt Solo, Lydia Antonini, and IDW Entertainment. Jonny Gutman and Julie Winograd will cover the project for IDW Entertainment. Max and Adam Reid are represented by William Morris/Endeavor and 3 Arts and Patricia Riggen is represented by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Jackoway, Austen, Tyerman, Wertheimer, Mandelbaum, Morris, Bernstein, Trattner & Klein.
RELIC OF THE DRAGON – Bryan Q. Miller (Shadowhunters, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe) joins as showrunner for the series based on the graphic novel by Adrian Benatar and Miguel Ángel García. The fantasy action-adventure follows the journey of Uric, an ordinary man hunting for a relic of enormous power.  The most dangerous undertaking of his life, the choices Uric makes along the way will change his life forever – along with the fate of his entire nation. Daniel Kendrick will head up development on behalf of IDW. Bryan Q. Miller is represented in the deal by Verve Los Angeles.
SATELLITE FALLING – Will Pascoe (Orphan Black, Absentia) has been named as Showrunner/Executive Producer and Jude Weng (Finding 'Ohana, Only Murders in the Building) is attached as Director/Executive Producer for the series adaptation of Satellite Falling, based on the comic books by Steve Horton, Stephen Thompson and Martin Morazzo. Set in a seedy future of radical technology, sentient aliens, and familiar prejudices, Satellite Falling is a sharp social commentary about the horrors of xenophobia.  As a corrupt Earth maintains a human-only planet, incredible creatures from across the galaxy are forced to gather on Satellite, a city-sized space station near our planetary system.  Lilly, the lone human on Satellite, makes her way as a cabbie by day and a bounty hunter by night.  But as tensions between aliens and humans reach their breaking point, Lilly’s world begins to fall apart as the dark secrets of her past come back to haunt her. Pascoe is represented by APA and Weng is represented by Creative Artists Agency.

Me, seeing some art of Jon Burns As The Archives Burn Because He’s The Archive art: Huh, remember that fun fact you learned? About how when actors need to pretend they’re on fire they’re told to act like they’re being swarmed by bees because the actual reality of seeing someone in that much pain and suffering was too much for audiences so they had to tone it down? Interesting. Where did I learn that again? Oh yeah. Jonny mentioned it on a stream. Well, that’s not good.

People have been asking me if I have a list of books I like/have mentioned in Darcy fics and since I’m terribly disorganized, I do not! But I’m putting together this post of some of my faves that have probably been mentioned in passing: Beauty culture/makeup/style books:
Laren Stover’s Bombshell Manual of Style and The Bohemian Manifesto
Kevyn Aucoin’s Making Faces and Face Forward
Dita von Teese’s Your Beauty Mark
Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez’s Perfumes: The Guide
Chandler Burr’s The Perfect Scent
Pamela Clark Keough’s Audrey Style
Robyn Cosio’s The Eyebrow
Daniela Turudich’s Art Deco Hair
Travel memoirs/books/foodie things:
Amy Thomas’ Paris, My Sweet
Elizabeth Bard’s Lunch in Paris
Dianne Hales’ La Bella Lingua, Mona Lisa, and La Passione
Any book by Bill Bryson (he just makes me giggle in public)
Julia Child’s My Life in France and As Always, Julia
Bee Wilson’s Consider the Fork
Anne Bryn’s American Cake
History--especially heavy on 1920s history:
Sarah Churchwell’s Careless People (about the real-life murder that inspired the Great Gatsby) and The Many Lives of Marilyn Monroe (my favorite Marilyn Monroe book--it’s a sympathetic, smart analysis of how Monroe’s image has changed over time). Like Bill Bryson, I’d read anything she wrote. She’s fantastic.
Lucy Moore’s Anything Goes!
Joshua Zeitz’s Flappers
Judith Mackrell’s Flappers
Gertrude Stein’s Paris France
Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast
Sarah Vowell’s Assassination Vacation and The Wordy Shipmates
Claire Harmen’s Jane’s Fame: How Jane Austen Changed the World
Lucy Worsley’s The English Art of Murder
Karal Ann Marling’s As Seen on TV and Merry Christmas!  (histories of American mass culture and holidays)
Susan Tyler Hitchcock’s Frankenstein: A Cultural History
Kasher and Schoenberger’s Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and the Marriage of the Century
Sam Wasson’s Fifth Avenue, 5 AM: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and the Dawn of the Modern Woman
Creativity/happiness/hygge/art books:
All of Gretchen Rubin’s books, but especially Happier at Home
Ingrid Fetell Lee’s Joyful  (my new absolute favorite--so great!)
Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic
Twyla Tharp’s The Creative Habit
Chris Baty’s No Plot, No Problem!
Marie Tourell Soderberg’s Hygge
Meik Wiking’s The Little Book of Hygge
Jonny Jackson’s The Joy of Hygge
All of Keri Smith’s books
Beth Lisick’s Helping Me Help Myself
Flora Bowley’s Brave Intuitive Painting, Creative Revolution, and the upcoming Art of Aliveness
Alena Hennessy’s Intuitive Painting Workshop
Kimberly Wilson’s Hip, Tranquil Chick and Tranquilologie
Mystery novels:
Kerry Greenwood’s Phryne Fisher books and Corrinna Chapman novels
Agatha Christie, but especially The Sittaford Mystery, because Emily Trefusis is my girl
Ngaio Marsh’s Artists in Crime
Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next novels
Creative Nonfiction:
Susan Orlean’s The Orchid Thief and The Bullfighter Checks Her Makeup
Steve Almond’s Against Football and Candyfreak
John Jeremiah Sullivan’s essays for GQ magazine/his essay collection Pulphead
I’ll probably add to this, but this is a start!

My reactions to reading RotT. Part 1!
seeing all the books listed before the title page. crying.
to sounis. crying.
I WAS JUST THINKING IN MY REREAD THAT A TABLE OF CONTENTS WOULD BE DOPE.
this would be why he's only just learning to read when we meet him in TaT. bc he has horrific ableist parents and his nurse probably can't read herself, and so she couldn't teach him even if she wanted to.
"I bit him hard on the ball" 😳 "--of his shoulder" 😑
"my father is easygoing" *6 pages later* "one time my father kicked me so hard I had to spend an entire winter in bed" pheris, I'll kill him for you.
good job, gen. take care of the child.
"not everything that is easy for you is easy for the rest of us" holy smokes.
the unified crest!!!! (it reminds me of gen's coat from the official art, but not quite.)
"people love a dancing bear. no one wants to be one."
matching embroidery. awwwwww.
gen, babe, I feel you. I feel you. somedays I would like to be dead if it meant not getting out of bed and seeing people, but I swear to the GODS, gen, don't even joke about being dead. don't you speak that into being.
"if you were dead, we couldn't just leave you alone" they've learned how to deal with him.
he smiles at pheris, and that's the first time he smiles in the books.
"attolia raised an eyebrow, too much a queen to say anything else." I am madly in love.
"at a very minor goddess's altar [...] he closed his eyes and lay still for some time" mystery goddess????????
there's a lot of pheris being distraught by noise and disorder and movement and touch. he liked watching the order of the servants and the bees back at the villa. that's all I'm saying. idk.
gen sees earrings and that Activates Interest, no mask can keep that excitement hidden. heiro is so funny and a good friend.
his family aggressively trying to trick and politick gen into self-care.
they're his family, I just realized. wife and cousins, now that sophos has married helen. sophos was his family in affection before, but now he is legally as well I'm emotions.
"there were eleven, a frustrating number" hmmm. the whole thing with the orange. hmmmm.
"smacking people will not persuade them" idk it worked for gen in KoA.
exchange on pg 71 feels vaguely directed at the fandom.
"as your kind always fall" OKAY, BUT. IS THAT THE FALL OF A THIEF? THE FALL OF A KING'S REIGN? WHAT KIND DOES MOIRA MEAN? IS HE STILL A THIEF?
"men fall in battle [...] they fall ill" SEE, THAT'S PRECISELY WHAT I'M AFRAID OF. H E C K.
"wouldn't it cause confusion having two cleons?" I'm entirely confident that megan whalen turner has never heard the name of jonny sims much less knows who he is and about his infamous naming conventions, but nonetheless, mwt has thrown some major shade at jonny sims.
"verimus pursued the poet lavia, who wrote terrible poetry about celia, one of the queen's attendants" oh?
"why a guard stared at layteres, the second son of baron xortix, and why layteres pretended so poorly not to notice" oh??
costis name drop!!!
"I remember this moment particularly because died clopius died trying to protect the king after the ambush at the roadside tomb" I'm sorry, what?
why do characters keeping writing in-universe fic mocking my boy
Bythesea. By the sea. I'm so angry.
What ambassador hurt Megan that she has to drag their ilk through the mud and fire so
What if Cenna were one of his sisters or a niece
"Costis may still be alive" I'm an idiot, bc of COURSE this takes place during his travels int he mede empire, bc pheris only just got here. but it took until this line for the timeline to click in my head. and for me to realize that irene is pregnant rn. we will see the pregnancy. and....what happens.
"oh, what a lie that was" I see, that is how they say I love you.
I'm so sad. Juridius loved him and used to be his brother. honestly, and you know I don't cuss, but fuck their parents and the household for making a child choose between loving his sibling and being treated well by the rest of his family.
he's singing "the king's wedding night". I can't, I can't. have you no shame, boy.
SOPHOS. XD
gen having a pitcher of water dumped on his head and then just crawling up a wall like a vengeful spider.
my laughter immediately turns to terror. gen, you were JUST given a prophecy that you will die from a fall. be careful!
I keep needing to take breaks bc this is So Much. just the reality of holding this and reading this and turning pages.
"unwanted attention he paid to the women of the court" what is it with sexist ambassadors in these books, huh?
excUSE ME? EXCuse ME? not even nahuserfush was so rude and forward as to call her "irene". please, go kindly impale yourself on gen's hook.
"ugly women do not?" ANSFKSGMDJSHHSV.
KILL.
KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL
oh, I feel physically sick.
they deserve that. they deserve a little rest, and to take over a council room for a nap and cuddles.
he sexually harrasses and assaults the queen, and HE thinks HE deserves an apology for receiving a modicrum of punishment. I hate that I'm not surprised. I've met his type.
how are people still coming to this country and underestimating them????????????
good, dite has him. dite will be a good influence.
pheris and juridius are both children. this is so cruel of erondites.
gen sailing over the fence. no one told me this was going to be a comedy.
oh.
I spoke too soon about the comedy.
genny.
the only person who has called him genny before was megan on her tumblr, so I read that message in megan's voice. it is also very like megan to request earrings.
the dolphin signet ring returns! (briefly.)
megan, how come relius gets to know how old pheris is but we don't? >:[
okay, enough hmm-ing. you know what? pheris has autism. I was kinda wondering even back in tat, and I'm just very happy.
"by then, I knew why the guard Legarus stared with such anger and misery at Baron Xortix's younger son" okay, this in the context of love and being in love. idk if that's just meant to be him being jealous maybe bc the baron's son is dating someone he likes? or? megan said Legarus the Awesomely Beautiful and Gay.
relius where did you go?????? establishing a spy network mayhaps??? with some kick butt spy ladies like heiro and agape???
"one would have thought relius would be done with love and lovers, but I'd seen a veritable parade of them. none of his affairs lasted long, and I'd witnessed several spats when he showed someone the door." s... s. sexy. sexy relius canon. why. why this. dear God, why this.
the art in the middle is BEAUTIFUL. but the two dead birds at the bottom left corner have me worried for symbolic reasons.

Also, here! Have a full-sided Bee Head logo as well. This logo appears in all the photos I’ve taken. I’ve sketched it for awhile, but it’s the first time I’ve gone digital with insect artwork. It’s primarily based on the heads of Leafcutter Bees, but I’ve taken a few artistic liberties to try incorporate other Bee subgroups into the design. Don’t look too closely at the fur. And let’s ignore the positioning of the ocelli.

What is your opinion on Rolf’s scenes in the movie?
((Sorry this is going to be long. I’ve been trying to finish this for the past three days.)) So just going off from what everyone else said, I agree that Rolf’s scenes could have been trimmed down some, or at least utilized in a more productive manner. He’s all geared up like some hardcore Indiana Jones, looking ready as ever to whoop some serious ass, but he never really does anything. I mentioned it before, but it’s as if the writers just didn’t know what to do with him…
Tumblr media
(Credit for art goes to Marlushion)
That pretty much sums it up.
Granted, I don’t hate Rolf’s scenes. Far from it, actually. I just feel like he could have been slightly more on track. His scenes not only go on for too long, but in the entirety of his screen time, all he does is… fry an egg (???), pour some ‘’Rö suk’’ on a car seat, yells at Wilfred, mutilates a perfectly good muffin, yells at Wilfred some more, milks a cow, drinks unpasteurized milk, yells at Wilfred, gets a meat grinder stuck on his head… so yeah, basically, Rolf’s scenes are, as everyone described, just the very definition of filler. Which is a shame, considering Rolf is one of the most interesting and complex side characters.
In fact, Rolf isn’t the only three-dimensional supporting character that had less to do in this finale. Jonny and Jimmy also take back seats in their subplots, and they, too, have been the most developed of all the supporting cast. Maybe it’s just because these three characters had so much character development throughout the series that there just wasn’t anything left for them to do, and so the writers decided to shift focus onto characters that had very little development, like Sarah, Kevin and Nazz. The before mentioned characters were always the least interesting and least popular among fans, so I was surprised by how much screen time they received in BPS. Not only that, but their subplots are fairly interesting, at least compared to the more popular secondary characters like Rolf. I suppose it all boiled down to time constraints. It was more important, anyhow, that the Eds had their dramatic conflicts resolved and their time to shine– the rest of the cast just had to pick up the left-overs. Still, it would have been nice if Rolf, Jonny and Jimmy had the opportunity to be as great in BPS as they normally are in the series– even if they had plenty of development prior to BPS, this was going to be the last time we would ever see these characters, so to have them do nothing due to time, well, again, it’s a shame. EEnE was one of the few shows of its era that had a very strong supporting cast, so even if we watched it for the Eds, it was still a treat to see the others, too.
I think the majority of fans dislike Rolf’s story arc mainly because it lacks comedy (or at least, the usual Rolf antics we’ve come to expect). I like @mundane-ededdneddy-headcanons theory in that Rolf has been alienating himself further from the group and becoming more and more introverted as the series progresses. This is true. Towards the end of the series, Rolf has had some more serious moments than usual, moments that reflect his more introverted nature. For example, in ‘’Too Smart For His Own Ed’’, it’s revealed that he suffers from stage fright and has a phobia of public speaking. Yes, this same kid who bravely performs in front of his friends without a hint of shyness…
Tumblr media
… loses the Spelling Bee due to social anxiety.
Tumblr media
‘’No Speak Da Ed’’ is perhaps one of the darkest Rolf-centric episodes, the plot which heavily draws upon past childhood trauma. So it’s not as if Rolf was never serious before BPS. Even before Season 5-6, Rolf had some heavy material in his episodes, such as ‘’Wish You Were Ed’’ and ‘’Dueling Eds’’.  So again it’s not like Rolf can’t be serious– but because he’s more beloved and popular for his comedic timing, I guess his story in BPS fell a bit flat for some. I think the criticism mainly stems from the fact that even in his more serious episodes, the writers always made sure to pull it back to comedy. In ‘’Wish You Were Ed’’, it begins kinda sad, but then it gets pretty outrageous.
Tumblr media
Same goes for ‘’Dueling Eds’’, which handled a pretty serious topic of Eddy unintentionally hurting Rolf’s feelings… it begins normal enough, but then escalates into… insanely… weird… shit…
Tumblr media
Even ‘’No Speak Da Ed’’ ended on a comedic note. So if BPS handled serious frustrated Rolf in the same way they handled these episodes, maybe fans wouldn’t be so nitpicky about it?
Tumblr media
Maybe the meat grinder was meant to be hilarious, but it’s actually just kinda sad. I mean, the kid loses everything… all the possessions he can carry, his pig, his shoe… I mean, he’s kind of a wreck at the end. I don’t know about anyone else, but I wasn’t laughing, and maybe I was supposed to be?
But going back for a moment, maybe fans just weren’t thrilled with the idea of Rolf being so cut off from the rest of the group. Granted, he has really always been an introvert, just not in the pure sense of the word like Jonny and Edd. Rolf’s more of an extroverted introvert, in that he enjoys the company of his friends, but he’s also not afraid to go solo. We’ve seen moments of Rolf alone before– but that’s all it was, moments. He’s revealed to be a slightly different person when he’s alone as opposed to in a group. In fact, he’s more serious when he’s alone. In ‘’Pick an Ed’’ we see him sitting alone under the bleachers, dwelling over his poor grades. His frustration here mirrors exactly how he is during the entirety of BPS: talking to himself, talking to his pig. But I think because we’re not used to seeing him alone so long, it was maybe a tad unsettling to not have him bounce off of anyone and vent his anger and frustration in other ways– such as through comedy. The same would be true for the rest of the cast. It’s interesting to see how the characters react when by themselves, but they are much more interesting when bouncing off each other. I could say the same for the Eds– they wouldn’t be nearly as interesting by themselves. So because Rolf is alone for the majority of BPS, he doesn’t have the opportunity to be as fun as he usually is.

He isn’t playing comic relief in his story at all. Like Kevin, he’s terribly frustrated and solely focused on revenge. But even though we as fans sit here and analyze these characters like we created them, we didn’t, and maybe there was a creative reason why Danny–who obviously knows his own characters better than we do–decided not to go with comedy for Rolf. Maybe he felt it would be too inappropriate for this type of setting? I mean, all the kids have pretty dramatic moments in their stories… but then again, even in their most tense situations, they still have room for comedy. I’ve seen several responses already suggesting Rolf should have at least tagged along with Jonny or acted as a third wheel in the Kevin X Nazz X Bike subplot. Either one would have been good, but maybe Danny just didn’t want him around to crack jokes? Maybe he felt as though Rolf could be more than that? Maybe he just wanted to give us something we wouldn’t expect? The way they paired up the kids was a no brainer– but again, maybe there was a reason why they wanted Rolf alone with his pig instead of with his friends. I think there were other ways to make his story work without interfering with the other kids, one of the suggestions being the previously mentioned pitch that all he needed was more comedy. He could have still bounced off Wilfred the same way he bounces off the other characters, and in a less cruel way. That’s another criticism of mine, having him be so unreasonably harsh towards Wilfred. Rolf has never been shown to be extremely abusive of his animals before. Maybe he was just taking his anger of the Eds out on Wilfred… but it was still a tad extreme and slightly out of character, even for Rolf. I’m almost glad Wilfred bit the shit out of him.

One last thing to add. Towards the end of the series, Rolf has been taking on subtle traits of Double D by not only improving his English and expanding his vocabulary but also…

Not only does he better his English, even though he can’t excel in school despite working his ass off to little avail, but Rolf also starts to embrace science and technology, as if an excess of Double D’s annoying habits rubs off on him. Season 1-4 Rolf is behind the times, often resorting to animalistic tactics and do-it-yourself conduct, using natural resources and living off the land. The only hint of ‘’technology’’ in his antique-ridden old-world colonial-style home is a dated television set with foreign characters on the control dials and limited channels. But in BPS,  he goes full Steampunk mode while tracking the Eds, which, as cool as it seems, is a little out of Rolf’s passé character. Though Steampunk incorporates modern technology with the aesthetic of 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery, it also seems very advanced for Rolf, who in previous seasons, would use traditional, natural remedies like Carbuncle of the Flesh Stew to heal acne and other skin blemishes. Analyzing egg whites to uncover evidence of missing persons in a forensic-styled science experiment sounds more like Double D’s mojo, not Rolf’s, no matter how DIY. Oh well. He may have temporarily stolen Edd’s thunder but he looks badass, so who gives a flying cow?

Oh, also…

It might be safe to assume that science and agriculture aren’t so different after all, so perhaps Rolf’s retrofuturistic tendencies in eventual installments isn’t so bizarre.
