I think one trope that will never fail to break my heart is

"Crying to your saviour to deliver you from torment just to find they're the one enabling all your problems."

And I don't mean best friend or lover, I mean someone the character truly thought would save them from danger every time, someone they never wanted to disappoint, someone they've always wanted to model themselves after just to find out that everything was a lie and all the times they got 'saved' was just to groom their downfall.

SPOILERS BELOW FOR TGCF and TMA

It's Michael Shelly and Gertrude Robinson.

It's (partly) Jonathan Sims and Elias Bouchard.

It's Xie Lian and Bai Wuxiang.

Maybe even He Xuan and Shi Wudu (but more in the context of crying out to god just to find out that the god is the reason for the season).

It's the person the character trusted to always protect them, that safety net they always had, suddenly cutting loose of their own freewill and plunging them into pain......with no regret or hesitation. It hurts so much.
