Strawberry squid (Histioteuthis heteropsis)

One of my favorite creatures ever!! 🦑･ﾟ✧*:･ﾟ✧

These beautiful elegant creatures are found in the tropical/subtropical waters of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. They live in the Mesopelagic zone which is often also referred to as the “twilight zone.”

Strawberry squid can be found between depths of from 1,000 meters (3300 feet) and the surface, where they go at night to feed

The photophores within the tissues of their skin produce a distinctive bioluminescent flashing glow which attracts prey. That’s why they look bedazzled!

Strawberry squids have asymmetrical eyes that allow them to perceive light in both bright and dark surroundings. One eye is small and blue while the other is large and yellow and both were adapted for their own unique purpose!

I could go on forever bc these creatures are not only so breathtaking but also soooo incredibly interesting

Histioteuthis heteropsis (H. heteropsis), also known as the strawberry squid or jewel squid, is a species of small cock-eyed squid found in the Pacific Ocean at depths of 200-1000 meters. Famous for not only its berry-like bright red body speckled with numerous luminescent photophores, but also its set of differently sized eyes, this squid is a swift predator of the ocean’s twilight zone. It is thought that the large, yellow-tinted eye, is used to see objects against the dimly lit waters above, while the smaller blue eye, measuring about half the size of the yellow one, is more geared towards capturing bioluminescent light sources below. The strawberry squid's semi-upright posture lets it simultaneously look up, down, and sideways as it jets through the ocean. Food in the deep-sea is scarce, so animals must evolve unique strategies to not only find food, but also to avoid becoming food themselves. The reason for this squid's coloration has to do with the reflection of different wavelengths of light underwater. Red light is quickly filtered as depth increases and thus it effectively never reaches the deep ocean. There, a crimson coloration actually appears black and helps the squid hide from the gaze of predators like sperm whales, dolphins, tunas, swordfish, and sharks. Small light organs called photophores also dot the squid’s body to help mask its silhouette from predators prowling the waters below.

Venus girdles you NEED to see the way they swim. They're mesmerizing. They're a type of comb jelly that grow up to 3 feet (1 meter) long! They eat small crustaceans!

Strawberry squid, also known as the jewel squid, looks bedazzled with specks of bioluminescent cells all along its body! They're not very large, with the largest mantles only beingabout 11.5 inches (29 centimeters) long! Their bioluminescent cells also can match the color of the water above them, giving them protection from predators underneath them!

anyone else play the Disney Princess wii game and now whenever you’re trying to be cheap buying paint so you only get the three to make every color + black and white, ya mix up yellow and green because in the Snow White levels you needed red for flowers and mushrooms and such, blue for water and birds and such, and green for grass and trees and such? 12. “LoveSexDrugs” - Michael Medrano

featured on LoveSexDrugs - Michael Medrano

genre: dance-pop

Some of the most fun I’ve had with an album all year is Michael Medrano’s LoveSexDrugs. Medrano has been dropping killer queer dance singles over the last few years (check out “Fluids”, “Naked”, and “Disco Sleaze” for example). Those singles are featured on this album alongside this track. This track is funky and sexy. Not to mention that chorus goes incredibly hard. More people need to be aware of this project!

11. “Don’t Let the Devil (feat. Thank You Good Sir)” - Killer Mike & El-P

featured on Michael - Killer Mike (not yet released)

genres: hardcore hip-hop, chipmunk soul

A Run the Jewels track in everything, but name. Killer Mike and El-P return with a short, but fiery banger that I only wish was longer. This track is a teaser for Killer Mike’s new solo album, his first in ten years, and if the rest is as good as this track I think we’re in for a treat. Killer Mike comes into every project with intensity and you hang on to nearly every word he says. Enjoyed this track and can’t wait to hear the album in June.

10. “Kill Bill (feat. Doja Cat) - SZA

genres: alt-pop, psychedelic pop

SZA’s last album didn’t hit me has hard as CTRL, but this song was undeniably amazing. This new version adds Doja Cat to the mix which makes for an interesting take on the song. I still prefer the original, but this is a fun new version. SZA and Doja Cat collaborated on the latter’s 2021 hit “Kiss Me More” which was one of the best tracks of that year. These two have great chemistry.

9. “Top Dog” - Magdalena Bay

featured on mini mix vol. 3 - Magdalena Bay

genre: synthpop

The third installment of Magdalena Bay’s mini mix mixtape series is full of the extremely well-crafted synthpop the duo have become known for. “Top Dog” is my personal favorite on the project. It’s a cute little track filled with references to Laura Dern, a great chorus, and occasional “woofs” in the background. There’s a lot to love about this song and I’ve been bumping it nonstop.

8. “Seaforth” - King Krule

featured on Space Heavy - King Krule (not yet released)

genres: jangle-pop, indie pop

I’ll admit, I’ve never been too crazy about King Krule. However, this new single is pretty damn great. It’s dreamy and psychedelic, but it hooks you in. Just kinda feels like you’re floating. This track has inspired me to go back and give his previous work another shot. Also highly anticipating the upcoming album in June!

7. “black enuff” - redveil & JPEGMAFIA

featured on playing w/ fire EP - redveil

genres: hardcore hip-hop, experimental hip-hop

For someone so young, redveil is perfecting his sound at a rapid pace. I feel like each new project from him has been a step-up from the last. This new track is probably one of his best so far. He and Peggy team up for an aggressive and creative burst of energy. redveil was also featured on the amazing track “Kingdom Hearts Key” on JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown’s SCARING THE HOES collab album from last month. The future looks very bright for redveil.

6. “Saddest Worm Ever” - HMLTD

featured on The Worm - HMLTD

genres: art rock, progressive rock

One of the most pleasant surprises of the year so far is the wild rock opera The Worm by British band HMLTD. I find it hard to highlight a single track from this album because I think its best experienced as a whole, but “Saddest Worm Ever” is probably my favorite track on the record. Just this track on its own is a sprawling adventure with some wildly satisfying moments. Definitely check this track (and the whole album) out!

5. “Begin Again” - Jessie Ware

featured on That! Feels Good! - Jessie Ware

genre: disco

Jessie Ware’s last album is one of the finest pop albums of the decade. Unfortunately, it was released when the pandemic was in full force so I don’t think the album got the chance to shine as brightly as it should have. Luckily, Ware’s new album is out this month and with tracks like this I think she has the potential to go even higher than before.

4. “Turkey Vultures” - Wednesday

featured on Rat Saw God - Wednesday

genres: indie rock, noise rock

Rat Saw God is one of the best albums of the month for sure. The album is a great blend of noise rock and alt-country. Most of my favorite tracks on the album were singles released in past months and since I wanted to keep this list solely on stuff released this month, I chose my favorite track that wasn’t a single. “Turkey Vultures” is great at building tension. Each lyric slowly builds on the last until it explodes into a burst of noise rock goodness. A great track from a great album.

3. “Undergrowth” - Squid

featured on O Monolith - Squid (not yet released)

genres: experimental rock, art punk

Another exciting single from Squid in preparation for their new album in June. After hearing this and the other single, I’m really loving the direction this album is going in. I’m such a sucker for this new wave of British post-punk. The drums on this track are very groovy and the trumpets are also a nice touch. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the album in June!

2. “Cut” - Chat Pile

featured on Brothers in Christ EP - Nerver/Chat Pile

genres: noise rock, sludge metal

This new track from Chat Pile, off of their joint EP with Nerver, for me kinda solidifies their status as a noise rock/metal band to keep your eyes on. Their previous record, God’s Country, was great and this track builds upon a lot of the sounds featured on that album. Noisy guitars and intense vocals that just wash over you.

1. “I Been Young” - George Clanton

genres: baggy, chillwave, dream pop

This new track from the eclectic electronic artist George Clanton is absolutely incredible. It is very obviously inspired by some of the sounds of 90′s pop music, but it has a modern edge to it that makes it feel almost timeless. The chorus on this track has been stuck in my head ever since I heard it for the first time. Absolute joy to listen to and I can’t wait to see what Clanton’s next project is gonna be.

He definitely brings you fish and crabs that ar usual way over your price range and hard to find at your local market

He loves your touch as you trace his fins and scars and gently touch his ragged sharp teeth

Kyojuro

keeping him the same from my old head canons he is a LION FISH.

he loves to hold you and doesn't wanna let go. He will literally float on his back on the surface of the sea holding you above water a you cuddle him and whines when you try to leave again.

He courts you with food. He courts you with fish crabs lobsters octopuses and even squid.

He love to nip you neck leaving marks making it clear to othe merfolk your his and only his.

Absolutely makes you meet senjuro but only for a little while. And of you two get along great trust you won't be sailing back to your cozy bed. Nope you'll be dragged to his.

Mitsuri

Nurse shark absolutely a nurse shark

Shes just so sweet to bite you so she nudges your leg to get your attention.

When she realises your not a harmful human she holds onto you like your her savior and won't let go.

She also is one to court you with food but also flowers and coral.

She is also a cuddler and is always holding your hand or following your boat around scarring off fish your trying to catch so she'll find the biggest fish she can and hook it to your line.

Obanai

A sea serpent

He's very cold and aggressive as you found him in your casting net but when you cut him free an throw him your biggest fish costing you more money then it was worth he starts to grow fond of you.

He courts you with shiney things. Like gold metals and his pretty scales.

One time you had fallen into the water and instead of watching you drown he slithered onto your boat and hugged you tight.

Giyuu

Beta fish. He's jst a lil loser

But he's absolutely territorial over you like beta fish arenove their territory.

You never see a single soul in your fishing spot thanks to him.

He courts you with rocks he thinks are pretty. Again as I said he's a bit of a loser.

Shinobu

Blue ringed octopus and funnily enough is bigger then any of the merfolk even the uppermoons.

She was about to sink you ship till you offered her fish instead of spears.

She loves how curious about her tentacles you are and lets you hold and playing with them.

She courts you with jewels of her ships she's sank and loves how you jump for joy when you see them.

It really doesn't take her long to take you from your ship. And no one goes looking since you went missing where ships do all the time.

Just found out strawberry squids existed and oh my God I love the asymmetrical eyes they have, love it when animals have asymmetrical anatomy

Yeah one of my favorite animals! And it does look the most like a strawberry out of any mollusk, but sometimes it's just called a cock-eyed squid, and then since its entire body can light up it's also called a jewel squid. Nobody could agree on what its common name ought to reflect so obviously when we aren't referring to it as Histioteuthis it should just be referred to as a Cock-eyed Strawberry Jewel Squid.

I think it might be the only two-eyed animal ever discovered where each eye adapted differently! That's kind of surprising though, because counter-shading is an issue at every level of the ocean. It's always technically brighter above you and darker below you, even at night, even in the deepest point on Earth, so why did only one squid, out of millions of species, ever hit on the idea to just have a special eye adjusted to each?!?

The result is so unrealistically whimsical. It's like how Invader Zim kids drew all of their eyes in their 2002 Newgrounds comics.
