Jewel caterpillars, which form into the zygaenoid moths called Dalceridae that have 80 known species are toxic; at least in moth form, their hairy bodies contain toxins. It is a common trait in caterpillars particularly that have hair, when hair is seen in caterpillar, it is most generally toxic. However, in this case; it is the vice versa.
