Jewel caterpillars, which form into the zygaenoid moths called Dalceridae that have 80 known species are toxic; at least in moth form, their hairy bodies contain toxins. It is a common trait in caterpillars particularly that have hair, when hair is seen in caterpillar, it is most generally toxic. However, in this case; it is the vice versa. Moths that have hair aren't usually particularly toxic, although there are other moth species with hair that are; most generally though it is uncommon to see moths with hair and a species with such for example is the monarch moth.
