OH MY GOD WHY ARE FLOWERS!! SO HARD TO DRAW???
And I want to do a whole SERIES of these?? What is wrong with me
Anyways have a tiny Canus carrying some Arabian jasmines that he probably grew himself. White jasmines can mean sensual love, and flowers of the Jasminum sambac species are widely used to make jasmine tea!
Edit:: IDK why Tumblr ruined the color on this it's not supposed to be so dark and saturated ;;

This does not spark Joy (Dior, 2018 & 2019)
PREVIOUSLY ON: Jean Patou's Joy (1930) was voted the Scent of the Century, but for some mysterious reason, it's not manufactured anymore.
Dior fucking killed Joy.
I won't bury the lede here at all. It was Dior. And I love a good Dior, don't get me wrong. But in August 2018, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (which owns every damn thing, including Sephora and half the brands in it) bought the Jean Patou company (which had already changed hands twice). More importantly, they bought the name "Joy." And, somehow, their subsidiary Parfums Christian Dior had their own Joy, complete with Jennifer Lawrence ad campaign, ready to release two weeks later.
Tumblr media
For a while, Designer Parfums was at least allowed to manufacture and sell Jean Patou's Joy in France. But now, according to the Patou website, the company's fragrances "are no longer in production." When "authorized outlets" run out, they're out. Because apparently, it was that important for Dior to keep anyone else from using the name "Joy."
So what did they replace the Scent of the Century with?
I had heard that Joy by Dior Intense was a huge improvement on the initial Joy by Dior (which infuriated fragrance aficionados itself by existing, clearly), and I'm glad I tried it first, because if I had started with the original ("original") Dior, I would have punched a wall. But let's start with that: I kept trying Dior Joy #1 over and over because I couldn't remember what it smelled like. It is literally, in the literal sense of literally, forgettable. I tried it one more time today in order to write this paragraph, and: it's soapy white musk. Which upset me initially, I remember now, because I'm just really not a fan of soapy/laundry white musk, but that's on me; I've seen user reviews that do really like Joy by Dior. On me, it's just bubblebath froth, eventually a sweet citrus that peeks up from under it, and a drydown that adds some vanilla to that. That's joyous, I guess?
What I will say is, unlike the other perfume that made me think of bubble baths, it didn't give me a panic attack, so it's got one up on Chanel. But it's just... was this necessary? Did we not have enough soapy white citrus-vanilla musks in the world? At the time, I was just asking myself this rhetorically, but then I kept reading up on the Dior Joy(s). As Victoria at Bois de Jasmin points out, the actual fragrance is a copy of yet another perfume:
The result is that Dior Joy is Allure Lite. The rose and jasmine are folded into a sandalwood accord reminiscent of Chanel’s fragrance. From the top notes to the drydown, Joy follows the course of Allure, but in a softer, more transparent interpretation. The mandarin peel dusted with sugar, the rose blended with the lemony jasmine, a touch of apricot and orange blossom that melt into the sandalwood and custard-like vanilla. Even the same contrast between the sweet citrus and creamy woods is maintained.
Mark Behnke at Colognoisseur:
[Dior perfumer François Demachy] chose to create a mash-up of two huge best-sellers. The citrus opening is straight out of Chanel Allure and the floral heart is Dior J'Adore. In other words, it is just a re-tread.
DIOR! WHAT ARE YOU FUCKING DOING!
I won't say that Joy Intense (Dior #2) is more like Jean Patou's, but at least it has less of a soapy musk opening. Let's compare the notes:
Joy by Dior (2018): White musk, Grasse rose, Grasse jasmine, mandarin orange, patchouli, bergamot, cedar, sandalwood.
Joy by Dior Intense (2019): Neroli, bergamot, Grasse jasmine, Grasse rose, vanilla, patchouli, musk, sandalwood.
[Note: Grasse, "the perfume capital of the world," is a region in France famous for its role in the history of French perfume; it is especially known for jasmine and roses. "Grasse rose," "May rose," and "Rose de Mai" all refer to Rosa x centifolia. "Grasse jasmine" is Jasminum grandiflorum, as opposed to, say, the licorice-friendly jasmine sambac.]
Further info from dior.com:
Tumblr media
Get the absolute fuck out of here with this BOTTLE and this LOGO, what are you even doing. I did not even know a perfume could eat crackers
Joy by Dior, per the official website:
JOY by Dior Eau de Parfum is a bright smile, and a pure concentration of joy in a bottle. A juicy, vibrant top note gives way to an enveloping white heart of flowers and musks, just like a soft caress.
Again, I hated Dior's first Joy when I first put it on, but that's my own bias. It was just sheer disappointment that they centered this on synthetic white musk—you vaulted the Scent of the Century for this?
The "Intense" version:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh well if there’s a star on the bottom I guess I’m not mad anymore??
JOY by Dior Eau de Parfum Intense is a new olfactory burst, a scent of joy wherein flowers celebrate and explode in all their faceted beauty. The dazzling light of the juicy Citrus blends with the colorful shine of Rose and Grasse Jasmine, and is heightened by an enveloping woody echo of Sandalwood tinged with Vanilla. The fragrance results in a floral firework.
Fuck the actual fuck outta here. "Firework" my ass. It's fine, I guess. It smells like vanilla lemonade and some jasmine on me, with a pleasant lingering drydown. Not just the smell of lemonade, but sort of the feeling of happiness you get when drinking a sugary glass of it on a hot summer day. Don't ever say I don't try to be fair. And it's 1000% better without the white musk. I honestly wouldn't mind wearing this under a different name, but it's just so adequate. I put on Jean Patou's Joy, even a diminished Joy, and it was a revelation. I put on the Dior, even the "good" version, and it smells like copying what the popular girls wear in hopes that they’ll like you. Thank God they didn't stuff some Ambroxan in there while they were at it. The only reason Dior didn't dupe some trendy note from Baccarat Rouge 540 is because Francis Kurkdjian didn't work for them yet. What the fuck are you people doing.
Back to Colognoisseur:
[It] is puzzling why Dior would make the decision to produce a new perfume with the same name of a masterpiece. The cynic in me says because they’ve unleashed their market research staff and found out most consumers have no idea there is a previous classic perfume called Joy. [...] Joy by Dior is a good perfume put together via the perfume assembly line of focus groups and market research; as cynical as it gets in other words.
This is absolutely my take as well. I wore Jean Patou on one hand and Dior's Joy Intense on the other and compared how they unfolded in real time, and what struck me most at that point was how gourmand-adjacent the Dior is. Not entirely so, but the vanilla lemonade I get is far more in line with the cupcake and burnt sugar notes (WHICH I LIKE!) that fragrance brands have put in everything since Mugler’s Angel, rather than just let a floral be good—superlative—at being a floral. But the marketing department says that the Costliest Perfume in the World isn’t on trend in the 21st century; we can charge plenty for something simpler, more predictable, more pandering.
My other take is that Dior's Joy perfumes are formulated to inevitably be cheaper than Jean Patou's Joy, even what Joy was at the end of the company's life. I have smelled at least a Platonic shadow of the Costliest Perfume in the World, and (I don't care how much Grasse jasmine Dior claims is in theirs) this ain't it. I don't blame François Demachy; he was given a brief and he did his job. The man made not one but two versions of Hypnotic Poison. He has done more interesting things than this. Dior’s Joy has "cash grab" written all over it and it's not even bad. It's just WHY. Why would you DO THIS. I am going to stay mad and die mad about this. Jesus Christ. You can't even, like, gently reformulate the Jean Patou, put out the Demachy versions as flanker fragrances, and market them all? You have four kinds of Poison RIGHT NOW and you can’t figure this out?
And I wore these three perfumes for three weeks, I want you to know that. I alternated them day by day, sometimes wearing two at a time to compare. I gave them all many, many chances. And besides the fact that I personally don't like white musk very much, the two Dior Joys are not bad. They're not! They're just accessories to a minor act of cultural vandalism, is all. Imagine taking Botticelli's The Birth of Venus and saying, we're going to throw this out so we can have a photographer recreate it with Jennifer Lawrence. Everyone's wearing Dior Spring/Summer 2023 designs (including Venus). It actually looks pretty cool, I guess. Great, so we don't need the Botticelli anymore? When does the trash get picked up, Tuesday?
Even Disney doesn't vault its animated movies anymore after it remakes them as live action. Maybe I can scrape up enough couch change to buy a bottle of Real Actual Joy and some DVDs before anyone else gets some big ideas.

I knew that the name of Rutherford's ship (Sampaguita) probably had some meaning I didn't know of, so I looked it up and turns out sampaguita (Jasminum sambac) is the national flower of the Philippines. Per the National Museum of the Philippines, it symbolizes purity, fidelity and hope. Wikipedia adds that garlands of sampaguita are used to bestow honor, accolades, or veneration.
So young Rutherford named his racing ship after the national flower of the Philippines that can be used to represent hope and accolades. Seems rather apropos for a racing ship.

🌜🌸 Homemade Lunar Jasmine Tea 🌸🌛
Hello lovelies 🥰
I was picking some jasmine flowers under the new moon today and decided to turn it into a little demonstration of how I make my lunar jasmine tea at home! ✨
Tumblr media
Ingredients:
Cleansed jar or other sealable container 🧂
Fresh Jasmine flowers 🌸
Loose green or black tea (Camellia sinensis) 🌿
Magical Properties of Jasmine:
Element Associations: Water + Earth
Planetary Associations: Moon + Jupiter
Astrological Associations: Capricorn + Pisces
Chakra Associations: Crown + Soul Star
Energy: Feminine/Receptive
Magical Properties: Love Spells, Prosperity Spells, Dream Magic, Psychic Development, Happiness Charms
Healing Properties: Jasmine can be used to calm nerves, depression, and insomnia as the scent is naturally uplifting and calming
Botanical Name: Jasminum
Tumblr media
Making Your Tea
You’ll want to make sure your fresh jasmines are of the Jasminum species; common ones include J. officinale, J. sambac, or J. polyanthum.
Pick your jasmine flowers during the warmth of the day after any dew has dried, pluck as buds or freshly opened flowers for extra freshness and flavour.
NOTE:  Please make sure you do not use “star jasmine/confederate jasmine/jessamine” (Trachelospermum jasminoides) or “Carolina jessamine” (Gelsemium sempervirens) as these are toxic!
Here are my lovely blossoms 🌸
Tumblr media
In your cleansed jar, pour around an inch layer of your preferred loose leaf tea. You can choose your tea depending on their magical properties;
Black Tea: Courage, strength, wealth, banishing, energy, stability, death, and alertness.
Green Tea: Passion, healing, sexual health, love, energy, longevity, immortality, and cleansing.
For an added magical kick, activate your ingredients as you place them by reminding them of their required properties. ✨
Tumblr media
Now add a layer of your freshly picked jasmines over your layer of tea, and repeat the process with another layer of tea until you’ve filled your jar to your liking.
For best results, apply some weight to your prepared layers for a few weeks until the jasmine flowers have fully dried and their essence has infused into the tea leaves.
And that’s it! You’ve just made your very own handmade lunar jasmine tea ready to revitalise your senses and get you reconnected with your feminine side🌸🌛
Tumblr media
This is one of my personal favourite drinks to make while I’m practicing divination and doing your Tarot Readings. I really recommend you try this out if the ingredients are easily available to you, and get creative with other edible flowers! 🌸
I hope this inspires someone to start making your own teas and experiment more with kitchen magic 🥰

Natural and Geography: Rafflesia arnoldii - Malaysia:
Rafflesia arnoldii, the corpse flower or giant padma, is a species of flowering plant in the parasitic genus Rafflesia. It is noted for producing the largest individual flower on Earth. It has a strong and unpleasant odor of decaying flesh. It is native to the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo. Although there are some plants with larger flowering organs like the titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum) and talipot palm (Corypha umbraculifera), those are technically clusters of many flowers. Rafflesia arnoldii is one of the three national flowers in Indonesia, the other two being the white jasmine (Jasminum sambac) and moon orchid (Phalaenopsis amabilis). It was officially recognized as a national "rare flower" (Indonesian: puspa langka) in Presidential Decree No. 4 in 1993.
Tumblr media
The only host plant species of R. arnoldii is Tetrastigma leucostaphylum in West Sumatra. Tetrastigma are themselves parasites of a sort, using the strength and upright growth of other surrounding plants to reach the light. The host plants of the host plants – the trees that Tetrastigma uses to climb up to light, are relatively limited in number of species, although they are generally the closest tree to the vine.
When it is young, at least at the locations studied in West Sumatra, areas of primary forest, the vine climbs on sapling trees and bushes of Laportea stimulans and Coffea canephora in the undergrowth, in the subcanopy a Campnosperma species is the most important, whereas the only large tree the vine grows in is also Laportea stimulans. Tetrastigma often can completely envelop its host at the subcanopy level, choking out the light to such degree that the forest floor below the canopy is completely dark -this is apparently preferred by Rafflesia arnoldii, the most knops are found at the darkest locations in the forest. The most common plant associated with Rafflesia arnoldii is the smallish tree Coffea canephora (the well-known robusta coffee), which is actually not native to the area, but was introduced from Africa. It covers most of the undergrowth, with a Importance Value Index (IVI) of over 100%, and is also the main component of the subcanopy with an IVI of 52.74%. The dominant tall tree in these areas is Toona sureni, which has a canopy IVI of 4.97%.
Tumblr media
The buds take many months to develop and the flower lasts for just a few days. The flowers are gonochorous – either male or female, thus both flowers are needed for successful pollination.
When Rafflesia is ready to reproduce, a tiny bud forms outside the root or stem of its host and develops over a period of a year. The cabbage-like head that develops eventually opens to reveal the flower. The stigmas or stamens are attached to a spiked disk inside the flower. A foul smell of rotting meat attracts flies and beetles. To pollinate successfully, the flies and/or beetles must visit both the male and female plants, in that order. The fruit produced are round berries filled with numerous minute seeds.

behind-the-name stuff:
• Loopy Crulle: First name is based on the Abomination Councilor’s exaggerated twisting movements (she can even turn her head around in a full circle!). Surname is derived from a type of donut called a cruller.
• Sonore Skual: First name means “sonorous, echoing, resonant.” Surname is Papiamento for “storm.”
• Ripley Wolsteen: First name is named after an American franchise called “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” The choice is to coincide with the Beast-Keeping Councilor’s passion for the bizarre. For the surname. Wol- is derived from “wolle” (German translation for wool), and -steen is “stone” in Dutch.
• Berylis Gelumbera: First name is named after a crystal called a Beryl. It is also based on “beryllus” in Latin (technically, the Construction Councilor is planned to have an Ancient Greek motif in her design from the start). Surname is a combination of the following: Gelu- is “cold, frost, etc.” in Latin, -lumber- is hockey slang for a hockey stick (which was originally made out of wood), and the letter A is added at the end because the surname will sound strange without it.
• Ilya Jelyses: First name is named after a Russian biologist who coined the term, “immunology.” Surname is kinda intended to be a pun on jelly, hence why Eda calls the Healing Councilor “jellies” during education board meetings (Ilya is the director of it). -lyses is a medical affix for “destruction, separation.” This coincides with Ilya’s tendency to detach, but regenerate lost limbs.
• Darian Vernworth: First name is inspired by a post on Tumblr (I think, but I can’t find the original since I believe I remember seeing it on this app.) where the first two letters of Adrian’s name can be switched. I don’t need to explain the surname in detail, since Darian is the twin brother of Adrian.
• Yurei Omiku: First name is named after the ghosts in Japanese folklore. Evidently, Yurei’s design is based on a Yokai known as a Tsukumogami, which are “tools that have acquired a kami or spirit” (Wikipedia). Surname is derived from Omikuji, which are fortunes written in stripes to be taken to Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan.
• Jasmine Kulatai: The Plant Councilor is named after the national flower of the Phillippines, Sampaguita. It’s scientific name is Jasminum sambac, hence where the first name came from. Surname is an alternate name for the flower itself.
• Cherry Zitrino: First name is named after the fruit of the same name. The fruit has acidic properties, and the Potion Councilor’s personality is very sour. Surname is a play on the Portuguese translation of “citrus” and “zit,” a synonym for pimple. Cherry is infamous for sneaking in questionable ingredients into the food of their enemies, which often cause warts to appear on their tongues.

Sampaguita
Known in English as the Arabian jasmine, Jasminum sambac is known also as mogra in India and Pakistan and melati putih in Indonesia. Many Filipinos are familiar with the folk etymology: allegedly a Spanish corruption of the phrase sumpa kita ("I promise you").
However, this fanciful origin story is nothing more than that — a fanciful story.
While indeed sampaguita is a Spanish-influenced word, it is not a Spaniard's mispronunciation of a Tagalog phrase; after all, it is highly unlikely that a Spanish-speaker would pronounce /u/ as /a/. Rather, it is the diminutive form of the Tagalog word sampaga ("jasmine"), a word that is now archaic and unfamiliar to most Filipinos today, who would use the word hasmin to refer to jasmines. This is how folk etymologies come to exist — as the original form or meaning of a word becomes archaic, foreign or unfamiliar to modern speakers, it is reinterpreted to resemble more familiar words. In this case, the phrase sumpa kita.
Sampaga itself is a loanword from Sanskrit. Campaka चम्पक or champaka, however, does not refer to Jasminum sambac, but to a completely different flower, Magnolia champaca. The Sanskrit word for jasmine is malati मालती, which is where the Indonesian word melati ("jasmine") comes from.
The sampaguita also has another name in Filipino: kampupot.

Jasmines are my favourite flowers. They smell of sun, warmth, love, sweetness. hubby and i became obsessed with them when we saw all these varieties being sold for CHEAP at Morrisons. we have seven varieties now:
. Jasminum Officinale ”Clotted Cream”
. Jasminum Beesianum
. Jasminum Officinale ”Inverleith”
. Jasminum Nudiflorum
. Jasminum Polyanthum
. Trachelospermum Jasminoides
. Jasminum x Stephanense
Hubby is looking to get Jasmine Sambac, and the one pictured is Jasminum Officinale. it grows out here in London. Today while cycling along Greenway and around Stratford (where the pic was taken) you can smell it in the air. it has so many flowers. Tomorrow we’ll take cuttings of it
