Spells are flying all over the place. It’s a battle none of them expected or prepared for. He’d lost Sirius at some point. They’d been fighting next to each other, and then they weren’t. There were so many of them. He’d manage to incapacitate one and another would instantly replace them.

He’d just stunned a death eater when he was hit from behind. He was lucky it wasn’t a killing curse. He was lifted from his feet and thrown forward. The spell knocked the wind from him, and when he managed to roll onto his back, he realised he couldn’t see. His glasses had flown off while he was airborne. He sat up and felt around the ground, trying to find them.

A form clad in black came rushing at him. He had barely gotten his wand raised before he was being knocked back down to the ground. He tried to fight them off, but they wrapped their legs around him as they straddled him. The weight felt strangely familiar. They leant over. Their robes draped around him, shielding him from view. He should be scared. He knew he should be scared but for some reason, he felt safe and protected.

The death eater’s hands came up, brushing the sides of his face, and then he could see. The death eater had replaced his glasses.

He looked up at the now un-fuzzy mask. At the stormy grey eyes beneath.

“Reg?” He whispered questionably. One eye winked at him before Regulus jumped off him and darted back into the fray. James didn’t have long to think about what had just happened. He was still surrounded by other death eaters that actually meant him harm. He’d pick it apart when he and Sirius were safely home.
