A/N: This is my contribution to @what-is-your-plan-today ‘s 25 Days of CHRIS-mas challenge. Today’s character is Jake Wyler. Also, this is my first time writing a headcanon - I’m very aware that this is a bit long for a headcanon lol! Dividers by @rainbowkisses31

Summary: College AU. When Jake stumbles in late to your history class, you think you have him figured out. But, as you get to know him, you learn that there's more to him than a bad first impression.

Warnings: Swearing, mentions of cheating.

You first encountered Jake Wyler when he stumbled into your history class 15 minutes late. As you noticed the tired look on his face, you deduced that he must've been partying into the early hours of the morning; but that didn't stop him from being nice to look at.

However, when he opened his mouth and charmed your lecturer out of giving him the bollocking that he clearly deserved, you realised that he was probably some spoilt little rich boy, who had always got his own way. You'd put money on him being the star quarterback at his high school.

Funnily enough, he ended up in more of your classes, and you were even paired up together for a group assignment for your English Lit class; where you'd learned your initial assessment of him had been correct. He had been a popular jock in high school, he'd even been prom king.

Sure, he was an arrogant prick, who never seemed to make time to meet up to work on your project; but, you couldn't deny that he was gorgeous – and there was no harm in simply admiring him from afar.

As the semester went on, you realised that there was more to Jake than he'd let on. He was constantly late to his morning lectures, and was never free to meet with you to work on your assignment together; but you hadn't seen him at any parties, and he hadn't made a name for himself as someone who slept around; but you were certain that there wasn't a girlfriend (or boyfriend) on the scene.

The only time that you'd seen him away from the classroom was when you'd bumped into him at the library checking out books on art history, despite that you were almost certain that he wasn't taking any classes in it.

But, despite never having time to meet with you outside of class, Jake was contributing towards your assignment; always doing whatever was needed of him to do and beyond, leaving you with little to do. In fact, his input had led to you both getting an A.

Most peculiarly, towards the end of the semester, you noticed that Jake had got a lot quieter and became withdrawn. When you mentioned this to your friends, they brushed it off as him being stressed about finals; quickly telling you to stop being so nosey and wondering why you were showing so much interest in an asshole like Jake in the first place. However, you knew that there was something more to it.

After finals, you and your friends celebrated completing your first semester of college by going to the biggest party on campus. While the party had got off to a good start, Brock from your film class had started hitting on you and wouldn't leave you alone, despite the fact that you had made it perfectly clear that you weren't interested.

When Brock was dragged off to join in a game of beer pong, you used the opportunity to slip away, deciding to hide in one of the empty bedrooms needing five minutes of alone time.

However, when you closed the door, you soon realised that you were not alone... Sitting on the bed crying was none other than Jake Wyler.

Surprised and concerned, you immediately sat beside him; you weren't close enough to warrant a hug, but you gave him a pat on the back as you asked him what was wrong.

“It doesn't matter, the only reason that I came to this party was to try to forget about her.”

There he explained about Janey and the convoluted way they'd got together. Even though she ended up staying in LA for the summer, it was clear that the art scholarship in Paris was too good an opportunity to pass up. The reason for Jake's tiredness, lateness and lack of free time was that he was up until midnight talking to Jamie on the phone before her morning classes began, then studying until he crashed in the small hours of the morning.

However, as time passed it became clear to Jake that he was putting more effort into the relationship than Janey and the more he tried to fight for them the more distant she became. Eventually, Janey confessed that she had cheated on Jake with a guy named Zack, and they had broken up.

“I feel so stupid, a huge part of me knew that a relationship that was that messy and drama filled would never last. But I'd already fallen for her and I thought we'd be the exception, and now I've wasted an entire semester on someone who doesn't give two flying fucks about me.”

“You're not stupid, you're just a hopeless romantic. When you look back on this, at least you can say that you tried your hardest. And there are still plenty of semesters left for you to do the whole college thing. Soon it'll be a new year, and you can have a new start.”

“If I had a drink, I'd drink to that.”

“Well, shall we go back out there and grab one? Or if you want to get out of here? I know this great 24 hour diner that serves great pan-”

“A drink sounds perfect to me.”

After rejoining the party, you spent most of the night talking with Jake, getting to know him better, and you'd never been so pleased that your initial assumption of him was wrong.

“Thanks for everything you've done tonight, I thought tonight was gonna suck, but I'm actually enjoying myself.”

Before you had a chance to respond, he then leaned towards you and gave you a chaste kiss on the cheek. As he quickly pulled away, you noticed that there was a pink tinge to his cheeks that wasn't there before.

“To a new year and a new start.”

Jake was avoiding giving you eye contact, and you noticed that he was looking above your head. Following his eye line, you looked up to see a sprig of mistletoe. Grinning, you leant towards Jake and returned the favour, being careful not to smudge your lipstick. Holding out your red solo cup to him, you simply replied.

“To a new year and a new start.”

Fucking... Lucas Lee. He is so full of himself that if you even HINT that he might not be the best you ever had, he makes it his mission to make you scream his name several times. He wants that validation.
