The Funeral Pt. 1

The wave of Gullet crash into the rocks that surrounded Driftmark, the sky was covered by grey clouds. The wind blew subtly as house targaryen and house velaryon stood outside listening to lord vaemond speak, everyone wore black and grim looks.

Today was Laena Velaryon's funeral. The only thing left of her was her char burnt body that was hidden by the driftwood sarcophagus that was made by corlys, only a few knew what really happen to laena while others speculated, but rhaelle knew so did daemon and their two children, maekar and alys, as well as jaenara.

It was hard for the three children to sleep, every time they close their eyes all they could see is vhagar fiery breathe and hear rhaelle cries for her baby sister. Noneof the witnesses had a decent night of sleep, and it showed on their faces especially rhaelle.

She had bags under eyes and hollow cheek, she barely eat when it was time to daemon dismay and when he have to tell her to she ignore him and move her food around her plate with her fork, and when night came she would sleep for bit before waking up in cold sweats and leave to the garden where laena and her girls like to spend their free time. Sometime she would go under the tree that laena who be with gaela and gaemon reading them a tale, and curl up in the spot next to where laena would usually sit and cry herself back to sleep.

Her late night trip would result in a argument with her better half, as daemon worried for her health rhaelle tried to handle the unexpected death of her little sister. She and laena never grew up together, rhaelle was sent off to marry otto before her sister could understand why her big sister wasnt leavijg with them anymore, rhaelle always felt like a stranger to her sister but laena never did. Laena saw Rhaelle as her big sister that she never got a chance to be raised with because of their father, but they made up for lost time when she decided to live with daemon and rhaelle.

Rhaelle found out so much interesting things that she never knew about her sister, like laena favorite flower was gillyflower or how she hated the taste of squash. Or how she would wiggle her nose when she was anxious or sad or the fact she always wish to sail the world like their father did when he was young.

So much she found out about laena in the course of a few years, and just like that she was gone, rhaelle didn't expect it or prepare for it. She never thought about the stranger taking her sweet sister, rhaelle always imagine she die first so she didn't have to watch the people she love fade away. There was times when she was laying under the tress that she wish the stranger would trade her soul for laena's own, her sister didn't deserve to die so young, laena deserved to live her life and explore before being trap in a palace with a husband like daemon and surrounded by children.

Rhaelle felt like she failed her sister in many ways than one.

As both house stand in silence near the cliffs of High Tide, rhaelle glance around at the familiar and unfamiliar faces that should to pay their respects for her sister. Her children was gathered around her while daemon stood off to the side away from his wife and children, gaela was in front of rhaelle with her mother's right arm around her shoulder with her cane in hand while rhaelle's other arm was holding gaemon to her side. Alys lean against her older brother, Aemon, while holding Alyssa's hand, Maekar was next to Alyssa with his arm around Baelon's shoulder while the young boy focus more of the water than anything else.

Valaena and Aeron was there with their sons and adrielle aa they stand behind their mother, Corywn was inside in his chamber looking out of the window of High Tide, corywn's sons were with their cousins next to Valaena. Baelor was there as well with Marra and his wife beside his mother and gaela, baelor had his head on top of his wife's head as he tries to keep in the tears.

Baela was next to her grandmother with her head on rhaenys's shoulder, while Rhaena was being held by Corlys. Laenor was standing with his daughter with both arms around her holding her to him as he shed tears for his older sister, rhaenyra stare at laenor and jaenara with a hint of anger as she stood holding her two boys close to her. She glance away from her husband and jaenara to look across from her to daemon who stood alone with his hands clasp together in front of him, he flicker his eyes up to look back at rhaenyra who cast her eyes away as her heartbeat fast in her chest.

"...Salt course through Velaryon blood. Our runs thick. Our runs true..." Rhaelle glance away from her sister's coffin to her uncle to see him staring down rhaenyra and her children making her wrinkle her nose, before rhaelle could snarl at her intolerable uncle, her heart clench when she heard daemon.

Aeron look over at Daemon with a sneer as well as Baelor, the children furrow their brows in confusion or anger as they look at their father before they look away back to their great uncle.

Daemon had his bent as he giggle at the audacity of vaemond, he lift his head up again with a hint of a smile, he glance at rhaenyra before he look over at his wife and children. His smile fade when he caught rhaelle's wet eyes, she sniff and look away from him to look back at her uncle with a glare.

"...And ours must never thin–" Vaemond says.

"Dīnagon va, kepus." Rhaelle hiss making the older man look at her for a moment taken back before he bow his head and let out a apology. Move on, uncle.

"...To the sea we belong, and to the sea we return..." Rhaelle bite the inside of her bottom lip as she turns to her sister's coffin.

"Kostagon ziry emagon nykeā ȳgha voyage." Vaenond said in high valyrian, rhaelle pull her arms from her children and step forward making laenor do the same. May she have a safe voyage.

Rhaelle held her brother's arm as they step close to the coffin, she let go as they go on either side to look at the carve face of their sister. She bends down to kiss the head before pressing her forehead against the wood, she whisper a prayer before leaning up straight to watch her brother to the same thing. Rhaelle and Laenor step back holding onto each other as they watch with blurry eyes as their sister get push into the sea to be with her ancestors. Laenor turns his back to the scene as he hugs rhaelle burying his face in his sister's shoulder crying, rhaelle hold her brother tight as the loud splash of water indicates laena's departure.

Rhaelle stood in the corner looking out at the sea as the guests give out condolences, she turn her eyes down to the stone balustrade before glance to the right of her to see daemon further down leaning his hip against the balustrade as he watch her subtly. She drag her eyes away from him and back at the deep blue sea, while rhaelle was wallowing in despair, her brother was off somewhere grieving alone. As she leans forward she rest her chin on the palm of her hand as her elbow rest on the stone balustrade, she heard whispers making her turn her head slightly to hear jace and rhaenyra talk.

"...we should be at Harrenhal paying our respect to lord strong and ser harwin–"

"Jace. Enough." Rhaenyra says as she flicker eyes around to make sure no one heard him, she caught rhaelle's empty stare making jacerys follow his mother's gaze to see his aunt.

A sudden anger and resentment spir in her stomach making her scowl the two before turning away to push herself off the railing and limp away with her cane snapping against the stone floors, daemon move away as well following after his wife as she heads towards the table and grab a cup.

"What are you doing?" He ask standing next to her, rhaelle didn't pay no mind to him as she stare at the red liquid that's giving off strong fragrance she tried so hard for years not to touch.

"What do you think I'm about to do." She said monotone as she swirl the liquid in the cup.

"Don't do it, rhaelle." He said as he watch her smell the wine.

"Why not? I think I deserve a little taste of oblivion just for one night."

"You work so hard to stay clearheaded all these years, don't throw it away, laena wouldn't want you–" A low bitter chuckle pass through rhaelle's lips before she finally look at daemon.

"Really? My sister have barely been down there, and you already using her to guilt me. It's one drink." She says.

"That will turn into two then three then four then your pass out somewhere chocking on your own vomit." A flicker cross between rhaelle's eyes.

"You would like that wouldn't you." Daemon look taken back by her words, "I bet you have a good laugh at my funeral as well, huh." Her words cut deep making daemon bow his head in contempt.

"You know I didn't mean anything by it, you heard what he said, I was just trying–" Rhaelle hit his chest making him look at him.

"I don't care what you were trying to do, your fucking daughters just lost their mother and rather than standing by their side and comforting them, you thought giggling right in the middle of it was a good fucking idea." He glare at rhaelle at her tone.

"It was your uncle who started it going on about true blood and whatnot."

"They are words, daemon. Those words mean nothing to their ears–"

"So, I should have just allow him to shame rhaenyra and her sons."

"Did you not think for a second I would have stop it," Rhaelle's words brought silence between daemon and her, he stare at her searching her eyes before glancing away, making her scoff, "So focus on her that you forgot I was there, that I have been defending her and her children for years. Just because I been a bit depress you thought I was going to allow that fool to make this about legitimacy rather than my sister." Daemon was quiet making rhaelle slam her cup down with a look of disbelief.

"Your unbelievable, daemon."

"I'm sorry–" she put her hand up.

"Don't, I can't." Daemon gave rhaelle a pleading look before reaching for her hand only for her to slap it away, "I need space. Watch the children and make sure they get to bed. I will come back to tuck them in." She said making daemon frown before he watch as she limp away to go back to the castle.

Rhaenyra watch from her spot near the other table as rhaenyra and daemon got in an argument, she watch as rhaelle limp away before she turn her eyes to her uncle who was watching with a dejected look.

Daemon felt someone watching him making him glance around at the guests before his eyes landed on his neice, he stare at her as she stare at him, before he could step forward to go to her gaela walk up to him.

"Papa, I'm hungry." Daemon kept his eyes on rhaenyra as she look away from him.

"Go find your brothers." He said.

"But, aemon is busy with baela and rhaena, and maekar..." Daemon let out a agitated sigh before he look down at the little girl, his bastard, his mistake and rhaelle's child.

He never understood why rhaelle wanted to keep her, daemon was fine with shipping her off to the silent sisters or whoever. Gaela was one of daemon's biggest mistakes, she was the fissure that made rhaelle regain her distrust in daemon.

"Then go ask your sisters, I can see you list off every damn flower in the garden but you can't think to ask your other siblings for help." Gaela step back with a bow head at hed father's harsh words, "You must learn to do things by yourself, your brothers and sister nor I and rhaelle will always be there to help you."

"I'm sorry, father." Gaela mumble making daemon huff as he turn his nose down at the little girl.

"You know how i hate when you mumble, speak up."

"Daemon." Rhaenys hiss, daemon look away from the girl in front of him to his mother in law, rhaenys been watching him the entire funeral after that giggle he made, she could see from where she stood with her grandchildren that daemon was belittling the little girl.

"Princess." Daemon acknowledged grimly, rhaenys look at daemon with distaste before turning her soft look to her granddaughter.

"Gaela. Alys is looking for you, why don't you go and keep her some company." Gaela swallow before glancing at her father wore a empty look as he stare at rhaenys, a rumble in her stomach made her look back at her grandmother.

"Okay, but can we...get food first." She ask timidly making daemon roll his eyes and rhaenys smile at her.

"Of course, my dear. Come along." Rhaenys held her hand out for thr little girl to take, gaela gave a small smile to her grandmother and grab her hand.

Rhaenys didn't spare her son in law a word or a look before she walk away with her grandchild, daemon watch them with a empty heart before he look for rhaenyra again to find her talking to Valaena. He'll wait for them to stop talking before going over but for now he went back to his spot by the balustrade to be alone, it didn't take long after for viserys to go over to his brother and talk.

As daemon was busy, his children were all huddle together with their cousins in silence as they watch their parents and adults socialize. Aemon had gaemon in his lap as he sat next to baela, baelon sat next to rhaena with her holding his hand while her head laid on his shoulder. Alyssa was standing next to Maekar as he had his back to the party and look out at the water in deep thought, Alys was on the ground with adrielle and daeron keeping helaena company as she mutter to herself and plays with a spider.

Aegor, Balaegor, and Vesemir are valaena and aeron' sons, the two oldest, aegor and balaegor were talking with corwyn's sons, Ronas and Romarn while Balaegor was holding on to Vesemir's hand as they stand near their cousins, Aegon and Aemond. Aegon was two cups in swaying a bit as he looks at adrielle as she talks to helaena, aemond notice his brother drunken state and decided to walk away from him to stand near the fire pit with his nephews and neice.

He stand close to his neice before looking at her to see jaenara looking in the fire with a empty look and misty eyes, aemond move his hand to brush against jaenara's hand making her hand flinch slightly and make her look to her uncle. He gave her look making her look away and back at the fire pit, aemond cast his eyes down crestfallen before he felt jaenara's hand grab his own. He look at her as she continue to stare at the fire, a small curve of his lip make him go back looking at the pit before stepping close before squeezing her hand.

Valaena walk up to them catching their attention, she stand their with a handkerchief in hand, her messy white hair was in a bun away from her face showing off her tear streak cheeks and red eyes.

"Hello, children. The sun is going down, you should all head up to bed now." She says.

"Where is mother, sister." Aemon ask.

"Mother is taking care of laenor, so I will need you and Aegor to put your siblings to bed." Aegor step forward making valaena put her hand on his shoulder.

"Where are you going, mother?" Valaena sniff moving her handkerchief to dab her eyes.

"I must attend to your uncle corywn, he is...unwell and needs me and your father." Ronas and Romarn share the same look as they look at each other before looking back at their aunt.

"Okay, sister." Aemon says making valaena give them a watery smile before leaving.

Gaemon move off aemon's lap making the older boy stand up with his sisters following along, Alyssa nudge Maekor's arm pulling him out of his thoughts and look at her before he look at the others getting up or moving from their spots. He watch Alyssa leave only to stop when she saw gaela and their grandmother, they shared a few words before Alyssa grab her sister other hand and wall with her inside.

Maekar stayed outside along with aemond, jacerys, lucerys, aegon, baelon, ronas, and romarn. He wasn't tired, well he didn't want to sleep more like wouldn't be able too. He turn his eyes to glance around the guests to try to find his father, when he did he saw him leave down the stairs, probably to find mother, maekar turn his eyes away from where his father went to rhaenyra who came to tell her sons to go to their chambers. Maekar turn back around to look out at the sea toning their voices out, and focusing on the waves that crash against the rocks of the castle.

"...we should go."

"...do you think anybody there."

"....definitely not but we should wait until it's nightfall."

"...fuck that we should go now before our parents get back."

Maekar turn to see his brother trying to convince their cousins to leave, maekar pull away from the balustrade to wall up behind his young cousin, Romarn.

"What are you talking about." Romarn along with his brother flinch at maekar sudden appearances making the boys look at him.

"We're going to go flying." Baelon said, "You wanna come? We gonna need a look out." Baelon wiggle his brows with a smirk making maekar just stare at him

"You should be in bed. All of you should." He said making baelon roll his eyes.

"We go to bed when we finish flying, so are you coming or what, because my dragon isn't big enough to fit aemond." Aemond glare at Baelon, making Maekar think about it for a minute, he didn't want to be the only one awake and flying did soothe him.

"Fine, but only for an hour." Baelon smirk while ronas and romarn smile along with aemond.

Maekar look around before motioning for them to follow him, they went to the stairs were his father left not too long ago before they stop. A man with a beard and pin on his chest drag aegon up the steps, the boys move aside as the older man didn't pay no mind to them as he drags aegon away. They continue on down the steps to the sandy ground, and headed to where their dragon's slept.

was thinking about how jacaerys would handle naming his kids. they have it spelled out that jacaerys will take the name targaryen once rhaenyra is queen and jacaerys takes up his seat as crown prince of dragonstone, which makes me think he'd go for a targaryen name. that + the general issues surrounding his identity, and baela being a born targaryen, also make me feel he'd lean towards a targaryen name. even in the scenario where he somehow wins the dance with his mother and is married to sara snow (i cannot even begin to explain why that would never happen though), i think sara herself would likely push for as targaryen a name as they can think of, again to drive home the point that their children are Rhaenyra's heirs. i was thinking

for girls:

rhaenys -> it's a way to honor his velaryon heritage, pick a targaryen name, and also drive home the point that jacaerys himself is a true targaryen; he has the name, he has the seat, he has a dragon, he has a dragon riding wife, and now he has a daughter named for a conqueror.

rhae -> simple, sweet, very targaryen, and he can say he's named her for like half the women in his house - rhaena the black bride, his cousin rhaena, rhaenys the conqueror, rhaenys velaryon, and even his own mother.

jaenara/jaenerys -> this is a name of an old dragonrider from house belaerys (went extint during the doom). i'm kinda fuzzy on whether the dragon riders all share names or if they're family specfiic (like the way a lot of areas have Region Specific Names but also Family Specific Names - think like Joffrey vs Boremund) so if it is region specific (as in dragon riders shared names but non dragon riding valyrians had their own) I think it would appeal; kinda similar to jacaerys and jaehaerys, very targaryen-ish. if it's not dragon rider esque and house specific, i'm assuming jaenerys is the Targaryen form of it, and I just think Jacaerys would want to name his daughters - his daughters esp given the succession issues they just dealt with - dragon rider names.

shaena/shaera -> not only is it a very neutral name - no one else so far has had it or anything like it, man or woman - but it's a bit similar to 'sara' and i thought jacaerys might like the idea of his daughter having a targaryen-ified version of his wife's name.

valaena -> it's a velaryon name so while i don't think he would give it to his first born daughter, if he had a few daughters, i think he might want a velaryon name as a way of honoring his father's house, and his grandsire corlys. i also think baela would love the idea of having a daughter with a velaryon name, and valaena being the mother of the conquerors makes it a good choice.

for boys

baelor -> ngl if i was jacaerys, baela, or sara, i would simply refuse to name my kid baelon as i'd feel the name was cursed lmao. we have baelon the brave who dies before he can take up the crown which causes a massive rift in the family, and then aemma dying for a son named baelon only for that baelon to die immediately anyways. baelor is a nice way to honor viserys, rhaenyra, and baelon the brave without sticking the kid with a cursed ass name. although baelor is very close to baela, so if he did marry sara snow and make her queen, he's not choosing this one, i think he would (rightly) worry it would be seen as a sleight towards baela and the velaryons.

aerys -> it's not a name that's been used by the targaryen kings at that point and i think the newness of it would really appeal; like a fresh start for the dynasty almost, the way daeron & myriah play it by using incredibly valyrian, but all new names for their brood.

valerion -> jae & aly used this for one of their babies that died in the cradle, but i think it’s a very distinguished name, and sounds like it could be a velaryon or targaryen name, which i think would appeal to jacaerys - and sara as well, actually, i think a bastard girl would understand the tightrope they’re walking here, & would want jacaerys to acknowledge his velaryon side for appearances sake at least.

maelys/maekar -> he can’t use maelor because aegon 2 & helaena used that one (and regardless of what happens to get jacaerys the throne, i can’t see him purposefully attempting to call to mind the targtowers). i have no reason for this one besides i just really like these names lmao. they’re very targaryen, very strong names, and i just think they sound cool!!!!!

daemion -> i think baela would love to name one of her sons after her father, and i can see jacaerys being talked into it (not for a first born though) despite the issues between jace & daemon.

ASOIAF FANCASTING –> EVERY NAMED FEMALE CHARACTER ABOVE THE AGE OF FIVE, PART XXV

Helya (main series era): A bentback old woman, the steward of Pyke in the Iron Islands. Fancast: Geraldine McEwan.

Henrietta Woodhull (b. approx. 120 AC): The daughter of a landed knight of the Paps, she was presented as a marriage candidate for King Aegon III at the Maiden's Day Ball of 133 AC. She was the last to be presented to the king, and was one of a few candidates to be rushed past him after he had already been presented with the girl who would become his bride, Daenaera Velaryon. Fancast: Larisa Oleynik.

Hildy (main series era): Lover of Lord Jonos Bracken, before that the lover of a sworn sword of Lord Blackwood. Fancast: Nicole Whippy.

Holly (284-300 AC): A wildling spearwife who accompanies Mance Rayder, in the disguise of a singer travelling with six female companions, to Winterfell to rescue Arya Stark, who is supposed to be in the hands of the Boltons. She is shot by the Boltons' watchmen as Theon and "Arya" (actually Jeyne Poole, the Stark girls' childhood companion) escape. Fancast: Hannah Sharp.

Irri (b. 284 AC): One of Daenerys Targaryen's Dothraki handmaids, formerly daughter of a khal who was slain by Drogo. She stays with Daenerys after Drogo's death and journeys with her as far as Meereen. Fancast: Lesley-Ann Brandt.

Jaehaera Targaryen (123-133 AC): Daughter of King Aegon II and his wife Helaena Targaryen. After the death of her parents, siblings and uncles during the Dance of the Dragons, she was married to the only remaining candidate for the throne, Aegon III. However, two years later, she apparently threw herself out of her window onto the spikes of the dry moat surrounding Maegor's Holdfast. The King's Hand, Lord Unwin Peake, may in fact have been responsible for her death, as he immediately tried to arrange for Aegon to marry his daughter Myrielle. Fancast: Eleanor Worthington-Cox.

Jaenara Belaerys (era of Valyrian supremacy): A Valyrian dragonrider who attempted to reach the tip of the great southern continent, Sothoryos, on the back of her dragon Terrax. So, something really stuck out to me while reading the Targaryen section of The World of Ice and Fire and the early chapters of Fire and Blood. That something is how much power early Targaryen women who rode dragons had relative to their brother-husbands. For example, Fire and Blood suggests that Daenys the Dreamer was her brother-husband’s co-ruler and explicitly states that her children Aegon and Elaena had equal status as Lord of Dragonstone. As it says on page 4:

“Gaemon Targaryen, brother and husband to Daenys the Dreamer, followed Aenar the Exile as Lord of Dragonstone and became known as Gaemom the Glorious. Gaemon’s son Aegon and his daughter Elaena ruler together after his death. After them, the lordship passed to their son Maegon, his brother Aerys, and Aerys’ sons, Aelyx, Baelon and Daemion. The last of the three brothers was Daemion, whose son Aerion then succeeded to Dragonstone.”

So, this passage is the most detailed information that we get about Aenar’s descendants. It’s pretty sparse on details on both the men and the women—for example, why did Maegon, Aelyx, and Baelon all die without heirs and presumably so quickly? It doesn’t say. We can still see here that two Targaryen women held a lot of power on Dragonstone, with the first known Elaena Targaryen being described as a ruler who was equal to her brother-husband. The text doesn’t tell us why, but my guess is that she and Daenys garnered more respect and received more official power because they were also dragon riders. (Plus, Daenys was the one who saved House Targaryen from the Doom, so that certainly counts for something.) All the information that we have about the Valyrian freehold strongly suggests that female dragon riders had as much power and freedom as the male riders did. For example, the only other surnamed non-Targaryen rider is a woman: Jaenara Belaerys, who flew her dragon Terrax across Sothroyos. (The dragon lord Aurion, who tried to reclaim Valyria right after the Doom, doesn’t get a surname.) The term “dragon lord” also seems to have been gender neutral—Magali Villeneuve’s painting of the Dragon-lords of Valyria featured in the World Book shows a man and a woman, for example—which was likely a cultural result of dragons being intersex and not seeming to care about the sex or gender of their riders. (For example, Vhagar had both male and female riders.)

The next logical question is: what happened to the wives of Aerys and Daemion? My best guess is that they weren’t Dragonriders and that they weren’t Targaryens. We know that Aerion Targaryen’s wife was Valaena Velaryon, whose mother was a Targaryen, which suggests to me that after Aegon and Elaena, the Targaryens of Dragonstone started intermarrying pretty frequently with the Velaryons and the Celtigars because, as F and B notes, “Dragonstone[‘s]…location athwart the Gullet gave its lords a stranglehold on Blackwater Bay and enabled both the Targaryens and their close alllies, the Velaryons of Driftmark…to fill their coffers off the passing trade. Velaryon ships, along with those of another allied Valyrian house, the Celtigars of Claw Island, dominated the middle reaches of the narrow sea, whilst the Targaryens ruled the skies with their dragons” (4).

So, how did the Targaryens enforce these alliances? We have direct evidence that they strengthened their ties with House Velaryon through intermarriage, and from the above passage, we can logically infer that they also occasionally intermarried with the Celtigars, though they seem to have favored the Velaryons. The best explanation that I have for this favoritism so that the Velaryons were richer and more powerful and therefore more important.

Anyway, the point of these ramblings is that when we next hear about a Targaryen Lord of Dragonstone, Aegon the Conqueror, who married his dragon rider sisters, those sisters were extremely powerful. We don’t know exactly what role they played on Dragonstone, but we know that they were far more powerful and influential than any Queen Consort who lived after them, even more so than Queen Alysanne. In addition to performing their traditional queenly duties of arranging marriages and creating a cultured court——something that was more Rhaenys’ purview than Visenya’s—they were battle commanders. Even though Visenya seems to have had arms training that Rhaenys lacked, Rhaenys still led the first two failed conquests of Dorne and provided air support for Orys Baratheon’s conquest of Storm’s End. The fact that they both participated in battle as Dragonriders is actually very noteworthy because, with the exception of Rhaenys the Queen Who Never Was (Jaehaerys I’s granddaughter) and Baela Targaryen (Daemon’s daughter) no other Targaryen woman is recorded as riding a dragon into battle. Aenys I’s daughter Rhaena did not participate in the Battle over the God’s Eye, even though she was a more experienced rider than her brother-husband Aegon, and Alysanne seems to have only used Silverwing as a way to convey soft power, which she did very effectively. Queen Visenya and Queen Rhaenys were both militarily active however.

What’s more though, they also seem to have made policy directly. Not even Alysanne accomplished this. For example, she had to persuade Jaehaerys to abolish the Lord’s Right to the First Night. She did not have the authority to do so on her own. Alternatively, Aegon I ended up deferring to Visenya on the creation of the Kingsguard after she slashed him across the face with Dark Sister to prove that their current guards were useless (F and B, 49). (Seriously, can yon imagine any other Targaryen king letting that fly?) Rhaenys also held court at the Aegonfort, the castle that preceded the Red Keep, and officially established the Rule of Six and the Rule of Thumb without having to ask Aegon’s permission (47-48). Visenya also seems to have done a decent amount of direct ruling during the later years of Aegon’s reign after Rhaenys was dead and he was absent at Dragonstone.

So, what happened? The most likely explanation seems to be that the Targaryens increasingly assimilated themselves into Westerosi culture and that that led to a natural decrease in the power of the kings. It’s no coincidence in my mind that Jaehaerys I, the king who made compromises with the Faith and standardized law codes and roads throughout the Seven Kingdoms, also checked the power of his extremely popular and influential dragon riding wife and twice avoided letting a woman (the aforementioned Rhaenys the Queen Who Never Was) or the descendants of a woman (Rhaenys’ kids) succeed to the Iron Throne.

What gendersawping names would you give to the Velaryon boys and the green kids?

I personally have a soft spot when they name Aemond Aemma in fanfics, at first I was like, who in their right mind would name their daughter after their first wife? But then I was like, Viserys, that son of a bitch would definitely do that.

And probably later it would be, too bad I named you Aemma since Lucy looks more like her 🙁.

I don’t usually think much about gender swapping but the concept does pique my interest from time to time.

I like Aemond becoming Aemma for the exact reasons you listed. Naming his second daughter after his first love is such a Viserys thing. If anything he would still try and convince Rhaenyra to name Luke, Aemma iii or some shit 😭

Luke will always be Lucerys to me. Not only do the female equivalents just not hit the same, but Lucerys is already in the realm of unisex names to me.

Joffrey would definitely become Jeyne while Jacaerys gives Jaenara or Jacaeleys vibes (I saw someone use those some time ago and it’s perfect)

Aela for Aegon, Daenerys for Daeron and i’m not too sure what the male version of Helaena would be. Someone help skskskssk

So what if you do actually want to learn Dothraki or Valyrian? Of course, the ideal scenario would be to have an actual language exchange with a Dothraki warrior or a nobleman from Essos for Valyrian. Some of the oldest remaining ancient texts were written by Andals, Valyrians, Ghiscari, and Asshai'i.(3) After the Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold in the Ghiscari wars, the Ghiscari began speaking the High Valyrian of their conquerors.(4)

High Valyrian is no longer widely spoken due to the Doom of Valyria,(5) and most Valyrian records were destroyed in the catastrophe.(6) The tongues of the Free Cities have continued to evolve from the original High Valyrian.(5)

Queen Alysanne Targaryen is said to have begun learning how to read from Valyrian scrolls while still at the breast of her mother, Queen Alyssa Velaryon.(7) Alysanne's husband, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, was fascinated with the Old Valyrian scrolls in the library of Dragonstone.(8)

The High Valyrian phrase valar morghulis‎(16) is translated as 'all men must die.'(17) A counterpart phrase, valar dohaeris,(18) is translated as 'all men must serve.'(19)

The word dracarys is translated as meaning 'dragonfire.'(20) Obsidian is called 'dragonglass' in the Common Tongue, but 'frozen fire' in High Valyrian.(21)Valonqar is the word for 'little brother.'(22) High Valyrian is the most likely source language for maegi (pronounced differently from 'Maggy'),(23) which means 'wise'.(24)

The Valyrian writing system, or at least a Valyrian writing system, is described as involving glyphs.(25) It was also probably standard practice to write on scrolls, and not in books.(26) The glyphs can also be inscribed, as on an old Valyrian dragon horn, which, when sounded, had 'every line and letter shimmering with white fire.'(27) Valyrian carvings have been found on obelisks.(28)

Valyrian steel is forged with spells, as well as hammers.(29) Some smiths still know them, although not entirely.(30)

Eight of the nine Free Cities were founded as colonies of the Valyrian Freehold, and are thus likely to bear Valyrian names as well:

Volantis's satellite towns of Selhorys, Valysar, and Volon Therys likely have Valyrian names as well. It is also probable that Elyria, Mantarys, Oros, Tolos, Tyria, and Velos are Valyrian in name, being cities close to Old Valyria.(40)

Bastard Valyrian

Free Cities

Bastard Valyrian includes the languages of the nine Free Cities.(1) Each of the cities has its own dialect, and each dialect likely has its own separate derived vocabulary. Syrio Forel of Braavos speaks the Common Tongue with a lilting accent.(41) One of the Brave Companions is described as having a thick Myrish accent.(42)

The Free Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(43) The Valyrian of the Free Cities is described as sounding 'liquid'.(44)

Slaver Cities

Valyrian Translations Season 4

The Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold five thousand years ago, and the Ghiscari have since spoken High Valyrian. The Slaver's Bay cities of Yunkai, Meereen, and Astapor have their own versions of bastard Valyrian, which have been influenced mainly by Old Ghiscari, the ancient language of Old Ghis. Like the Free Cities, the people of the Slaver Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(2)

Astapori Valyrian is described as having a 'characteristic growl,' influenced by Ghiscari.(2) The dialect of Yunkai is close enough to that of Astapor to be mutually intelligible.(45)

Valyrian Voice Translator

Yunkai used to be part of the Old Empire of Ghis, and has multiple languages spoken in the city. Mhysa, Maela, Aelalla, Qathei, and Tato are given as words for 'mother', but which tongue fits which word is unknown (excepting the first, which is Ghiscari).(45)

According to George R. R. Martin,

Tolkien was a philologist, and an Oxford don, and could spend decades laboriously inventing Elvish in all its detail. I, alas, am only a hardworking SF and fantasy novel(sic), and I don't have his gift for languages. That is to say, I have not actually created a Valyrian language. The best I could do was try to sketch in each of the chief tongues of my imaginary world in broad strokes, and give them each their characteristic sounds and spellings.(57)

Jaenara was to be awake, she stayed in bed for a moment like she been doing for the pass week before getting up when she knew a certain someone was getting ready for the day. The young girl quickly got ready for the day, she tied the small shawl around her head before she made a bow in the front as all of her hair was up in a messy bun. She grab her boots from next to the door and pull them on quickly when she heard a creak from outside her door, once finish she pull open her door quickly catching the young girl who took the room of across from jaenara by surpise.

Jaenara gave smile at her long time friend, alys, who in return look at her for a second before glancing around her neck before looking jaenara in the eye.

"Morrow." Alys says montone.

"Morrow, cousin." Jaenara gave a small smile happy that alys was talking to her, "Do...Do want to sit next to me at breakfast?" She ask nervous, alys hmm in thought as she study jaenara.

"I...guess." Jaenara let out a soft sigh of relief before she can say anything else, alys close her door before walking down the corridor.

The young velaryon girl watch her bestfriend walk away from her without looking back. She was happy that alys was starting to warm up to her again, at first she didn't understand why alys was ignoring her, when she was first told that her cousins were going to live with her she was so excited and so happy, since her father passing jaenara had been feeling alone the pass couple full moons.

Her mother (nowsdays) ignores her, jacerys has taken to becoming distant to her for a reason she does not know why, even her sweet brother lucerys has taken to not wanting to be around her. She had no one to go to when she felt alone, when Alys came to dragonstone with the rest of her family, they were good, it was like nothing change but not too long ago Alys just stop playing with her and talking.

She didn't know what she said or did to make her friend hate her, as much as she thought back all she could think about is the days prior after Alys stop talking to her. Her aunt rhaelle took her to the beach to sit and watch the waves, while the others were flying above, that day akys was visiting driftmark.

Jaenara didn't know much about her aunt just that she was sweet and likes to eat sweets just as much as the little girl does, and another thing was their shared love for poetry and sailing. Jaenara remember after dinner rhaelle took her to the great chamber with alys and taught her how to knit, alys hated knitting she tried once but couldn't get the handle of it so when rhaelle and jaenara stayed together knitting, alys left without a word. It was hard at first for her to knit but after a couple of days of her aunt teaching her she got better and now she knits all the time.

The day before Alys stop talking to jaenara, rhaelle gave her a pretty necklace with a silver chain and dragonglass arrowhead shape with carvings of the word "protection" in high valyrian vertical, it was the greatest gift anyone could have given her. She told alys about the sweet gift and she remembers how alys look at the necklace with an unreadable look, before saying it was pretty alys pulled jaensrs into her room and they started playing.

After that day, alys has been treating jaenara like her mother does, like she didn't exist, and when alys did talk to her it was always so mean like not too long after her aunt barely interacted with her making her go back to that feeling of being alone. She realize it all started with the necklace and as much as she loved it she took it off, and hide it in her trunk, now today was her second week of not wearing it.

Jaenara walk into the dinning hall to find her aunt with daena in her lap bouncing gently on rhaelle's knee, baelon sitting across from maekar, alys was sitting in the middle across from baela. She move to the table and sat next to alys who didn't look at her as she continues to talk to baela, jaenara looks away from them towards the door where daemon walk in.

She watch him as he goes up to her aunt and plant a kiss on top of her head making her smile at him before he kiss his daughter's hair, he took a seat next to her aunt and put his hand over rhaelle's hand. Jaenara continue to watch her aunt and stepfather give each other sweet smiles, she couldn't help but adore the two, the way they look at each other the way she laugh when he whisper something in her ear, she never saw that with her own parents. Her parents acted more like friends unlike rhaelle and daemon, jaenara imagine that they are what her grandfather, viserys, called "idaña perzys" or "twin souls".

Her grandfather would always tell stories about his true love, aemma, to her and her brothers. He said not many people are lucky to end up with their soulmate, better yet end up having one at all. She was young when her grandsire told her about soulmates and twin flames, she couldn't help but be fascinated about the thought of someone out their meant to love her. She hopes her soulmate will be a certain boy, a boy with beautiful eyes and long silk locs and who enjoy playing in the dirt and climbing tress. She hopes the boy will return to her and feel the same way as she felt about him for years.

"Jaenara." A hush voice call making her look up from her plate and towards her younger brother, he finger signal to his nose, "Your nose...it's bleeding." Jaenara's eyes grew big not realizing as she touch her lip and pull it away to see the red crimson, she glance around to see everyone looking at her concern even alys.

Jaenara quickly grab the napkin next to her and put it against her nose wiping the blood away, she never had a nose bleed before, she been getting them from time to time every since she was at Driftmark. She doesn't know what causing it and the maester won't tell her why it keeps happening, she remembers her mother talking about a fight and how she hit her head, but jaenara doesn't remember a fight or hitting her head. She doesn't remember much from laena's funeral, and the memories are still foggy.

"Are you alright, jaenara." Jaenara nod as she pull the cloth away from her nose and look at it with a frown, "Are you sure? I can take you to the maester." Jaenara look over at aemon who sat next to her.

"No, it okay, it happens..." she said folding the cloth before giving it to a servant to take away.

Jaenara glance around the table at the worry looks her family was giving her, she looks back down at her plate at the eggs and sausage making her loss her appetite.

"Can I be excuse, mother." Jaenara ask her mother who was feeding joffrey, rhaenyra look at her daughter as she grunt.

Jaenara push back her chair and left the table, she didn't know where she wanted to go so she decided to go to aegon's garden to be alone.

Alys was walking around the garden taking in the flowers and statue she pass by, she headed towards the ash tree that is planted in the corner of the wall that separate weriwood and aegon's garden.

She hope that she find jaenara there since she wasn't in her chamber after breakfast, alys wanted to apologize to jaenara for how she been treating her the last couple of weeks. After her lessons with her mother, rhaelle made her stay behind so they can talk. Her mother wanted her to see if jaenara was okay after what happened at breakfast, Alys angrily snap at her mother as she mentioned the so called girl that her mother has taken to favour over her.

"...Alys that's enough, you have been rude and nasty for a while now and I'm getting a bit fed up with your bad attitude." Alys gave her mother a sharp look that rhaelle mirrored, "Fix your face, little girl." Her mother warn, alys grits her teeth before she cast her eyes down, "All I'm asking is for you to make sure she's alright." Alys snap her eyes back at her mother.

"If you care so much about her than why don't you look for her yourself." Rhaelle clench her jaw at her daughter's tone.

"You are treading on thin ice, young lady. Watch it." Alys gave a sublte eyeroll before she cross her arms over her chest, rhaelle sigh moving her hand up so her fingers can massage her forehead, "After everything I said, I do not understand why you are still acting like this, she is your friend...and she is trying to get back in your good graces for something that has nothing to do with her."

"It has everything to do with her." Alys says angry before her eyes got misty, "You like her more than me." She mutter sadly making rhaelle shake her head quickly at her daughter and kneel to her level.

"You know thats not true, sweetling–"

"Than why do you always want to be around her." Her daughter ask making rhaelle frown, she couldn't tell her daughter the truth about jaenara, it will only make things ten times worse, so she thought about what alys ask her just many moons ago before Alys stop talking to jaenara.

"Do you remember when you ask me why rhaenyra treats her sons better than jaenara." Alys furrow her brows and nodded her head.

"You said it was because her sons needed more attention because they were...different." Rhaelle smile at her daughter and nod.

"Yes, because rhaenyra can't give her daughter her full attention, so I thought I could try. Because I know how it feels to feel alone even through you surrounded by people." Alys hummed understanding what her mother was talking about, an unfamiliar feeling fill alys's chest as she realize how selfish she was being towards jaenara.

Alys made it to the ash tree and look around, jaenara wasn't here, she turn to walk away when she heard rustling in the trees. She turn back around and look up to find jaenara sitting on the branch, alys and jaenara stare at each other for a second before jaenara spoke first.

"Hi." She squeak.

"Hi." Alys says back shyly, she glance away from her friend before looking back at her, "Give me a boost?" She ask coming closer to the tree, jaenara smile and wrap her legs around the thick branch before swinging herself upside down with her hand tightly holding on as her other hand reach out for alys.

Alys back up before she ran towards the tree, she jump grabbing jaenara's hand and use the closest branch to lift her up as she use her foot to push up. Jaenara pulled alys up making the girl climb onto the branch opposite of jaenara and sat with her legs hanging, while jaenara pulled herself up to sit leaning against the tree.

They sat there quiet for a moment before alys brought herself to talk.

"I owe you an apology." Jaenara look at her friend in taken back, "I was mean to you and I'm sorry. I was so jealous that you were spending so much time with my mother, i took my anger out on you out of fear you would take her away from me."

"You know I will never do that to you." Jaenara assured.

"I know." Alys mumble looking to the ground, she looks back up to jaenara, "I hope you can forgive me." Jaenara sat up and use the branch above her to get up, when Alys realize what she was doing she got up as well and lean over just as jaenara did the same.

The two little girls hug one another in an awkward position for a moment before pulling away to look at each other.

"I forgive you." Alys smiles at jaenara.

"Friends?"

"Friends." Jaenara beams.

Alys moves to give jaenara another hug but her foot miss the branch making jaenara gasp and try to save her friend but alys fall out of the tree with a groan, before jaenara could grab her arm to pull her back.

"Alys!" Jaenara call out concern as she climb down the tree and jump before moving over to her friend.

She moves to her friend's side looking over at her to see if anything broken.

"Are you in pain? Is anything broken." Jaenara ask as alys moves to sit up on her elbows.

"No. I'm fine." Alys says shaking her head, "Sort of deserve it, if I'm being honest." Jaenara scoff softly with small smile and lean back on her knees.

"Only a little bit." Alys chuckle laying back down on the grass before looking at jaenara.

"Join me." She says making jaenars smile and shift so she and alys could lay head to head opposite to each other.

The large tree block the sun from them as they relax in the shade.

"You know we should go on one of your famous misadventures," alys turn her head slightly to look at jaenara, "It feels like we haven't gone on one of those in years." Alys hummed.

"Yeah, but rather than me leading it should be you, I did promise I let you lead the last time we played." Jaenars turn on her stomach making alys do the same as they look at each.

"Really, you mean I can chose where we can go." Alys smiles at the excitement in jaenara's eyes.

"Yes, whatever you go I follow."

Jaenara hummed tapping her finger against her chin as she think up of an idea for their big adventure, jaenara looks up at alys with big grin.

"Jaenara & Alys Great Adventure to Dragonmont: The Day They Claim Their Dragons." Alys and Jaenara shared the biggest smiles at their new adventure, but alys smile turn to a frown when she remember what happened to jace and baelon.

"But, how are we suppose to get in, mother had knights guard the entrance after baelon and jace tried to sneak in the second time."

"We go through the walls, I read about it in the library, somewhere in the stone drum there is a door that is hidden that leads through the tunnels towards dragonmont." Alys nod before smile again.

"Okay, let's do it." Alys says excited.

"We will have to wait until the hour of the bat, before we go–" jaenara and alys pause looking away one another as they heard their names being called.

"Jaenara! Alys! Its time for your afternoon lessons." Aemon calls out to the garden as he walks around to look for his sister and cousin.

Alys and Jaenara look back at each other before they got up and brush off the dirt from their clothes, alys look at jaenara after she finish brushing off some dirt from her pants.

"If we do, do this, we will need a look out." Alys says

"Good idea, but who?" Jaenara ask, the two thought as they walk, "Maybe, Alyssa?" She suggested, alys made a sound.

"Alyssa likes her "beauty sleep" so I doubt she wait up for us." Alys replies, "How about...Lucerys." Jaenara shook her head.

"He a bit too young and he gonna wanna come with us." Alys frown, "How about jacerys," she ask, jaenara pulled a face.

"He just going to try to stop us from going." Alys sighs and stop beside a dragon statue on a pedestal.

"Well...we can try asking baelon, but I just know he gonna be proper ass about it." Jaenara giggle in her hand.

"We ask him after dinner." Alys nod as aemon came from around the nursery of black lotuses.

"There you both are," the girls turn to look at aemon, "come along maester maxir is waiting." Aemon turn on his heels making the girls follow after him back to the castle.

AMBIENTACIÓN

.Pocas leyendas tuvieron la magnitud que tuvo una de las mayores calamidades que soporto el mundo conocido, la Larga Noche. Hace miles y miles de años, hubo un invierno frio, duro, y largo como jamás se había conocido. Los reyes morían congelados en sus castillos igual que los pastores en sus chozas, y las mujeres sofocaban a sus bebés para no verlos morir de hambre, y lloraban, y sentían las lágrimas congelarse sobre sus mejillas. En esa oscuridad, llegaron por primera vez desde las tierras del Eterno Invierno, los Otros, los Caminantes Blancos. Iban levantando a los muertos a su paso trayendo el frío y la oscuridad, y aumentando sus huestes en su avance con los cadáveres de los enemigos a quienes masacraban. Acabaron con ciudades y reinos, cabalgando sus caballos muertos, cazando con sus arañas blancas tan grandes como sabuesos. Fue el invierno que duró toda una generación, se dice que duró tanto tiempo que nacieron niños que llegaron a la madurez y murieron como ancianos sin ver jamás la primavera. El Último Héroe llegó hasta los Niños del Bosque y este momento fue decisivo, pues los Niños del Bosque y los Primeros Hombres junto con la Guardia de la Noche se unieron, y gracias a esta alianza libraron y ganaron la batalla por el Amanecer. Mientras todo esto ocurrió en Poniente, al otro lado del Mar Angosto, en el continente de Essos frente a la Bahía de los Esclavos, un grupo de pastores de la península conocida como Valyria, encontraron en las cavernas humeantes de las Catorce Llamas, huevos de dragón. El origen de estas asombrosas criaturas es incierto pues a su alrededor abundan los mitos y la magia, pero lo que sí es claro, es que gracias a ellos, los valyrios se convirtieron en maestros en la crianza y adiestramiento de los dragones, usándolos como poderosas armas para acabar con el imperio del Antiguo Ghis. Al derrotar a todos sus enemigos, se formaron como la nación más poderosa de Essos, creando el gran imperio al cual llamaron el Feudo Franco de Valyria. Carecían de reyes y todos los ciudadanos con tierras tenían derecho a voz, y aquellos que conseguían domar y montar un dragón eran conocidos como los Señores Dragón. El dominio de los valyrios sobre la mitad occidental de Essos era absoluto. Pero esta gran civilización encontraría su trágico final cuando un cataclismo agitó las montañas y colinas llenando el aire de cenizas, un fuego tan voraz que hasta dragones eran consumidos en el cielo a pleno vuelo. El suelo se agrietó hasta desmoronarse y engulló palacios, templos y poblaciones enteras, y en el norte el mar penetro a la tierra, los lagos hervían o se convertían en ácido. Algunos Señores Dragón lograron escapar, como los Targaryen, que previeron esa desgracia y fueron acompañados por los Velaryon y Celtigar hacia las tierras de Poniente. Como Jaenara Balaerys, quien se encontraba en un viaje de exploración y en su regreso solo encontró destrucción. Como Aurion, un esclavo insignificante que sobrevivió gracias a su audacia al domar un dragón en medio del caos. Así mismo, algunos dragones batieron sus poderosas alas con rapidez y lograron ponerse a salvo, emigrando hacia tierras distintas de las que los vio nacer.
