gaze is kept downwards for a long moment as her words sink in, as you allow them to press in deep. why, why would she tell herself such things? why can’t anything between the two of you ever be simple? sigh and shake your head before sniffing, lifting gaze to meet her eyes and there is, for a moment, a brief harshness to the expression before you force it to soften. force yourself to breathe deep, releasing slowly. shoulders slack and you sink into the chair a little more, head shaking. “ i don’t get it. is it so bad to want me, to need me? am i THAT bad of a person to put your trust in? ” and you know the answer-- you know that men like you can’t be trusted, you can’t be everything to someone when so much of your life is shrouded in darkness and suffering. but surely, surely she can see through it? surely she can see there is good here too?

I feel like the problem ppl have when constructing redemption arcs is people make 'the character realizes what they've done is wrong' the end step instead of like...one of the earliest ones. a satisfying redemption arc doesn't resolve when the character first feels sorry, it resolves when a character has really journeyed towards atonement and made enough change in themselves to achieve some kind of symbolic victory over who they used to be
