Why Nick Nelson in Heartstopper is groundbreaking bisexual representation :

I'm sure most of this has been said by now but I was in the mood for fluff so I did a re-watch and like, bi rep is A BIG THING i want to talk about on this blog so I felt I had to lift this draft out of my graveyard of unfinished meta essays and finally finish it :

Very basic but a male bi character who explicitly calls himself bi and not as a stepping stone to another label ? Still unfortunately too rare

It's an old cliché but for a very long time, bisexual characters were presented as manipulative, mentally unstable, unreliable, two faced, flaky, cagey, hiding something, etc ; often con-artists, addicts, liars, cheaters, if not outright psychopaths. Even the positive characters tend to have a ton of secrets, chameleon abilities, hidden pasts, etc. Nick Nelson, meanwhile, is a human golden retriever. Yes he's a bit confused and he makes mistakes, but it's never not obvious that he's a sweetheart who means well and is trying his best to be a good person. He's so protective and gentle towards Charlie, and you can tell that once he figures his shit out he's going to be a dream boyfriend. Also he's kind of basic and a bit of a dumbass at times ? In the most positive, endearing way possible. He's honest and straightforward and reliable, he's not crafty or tricky or slick, and that's just great.

At it's core it's a story about the butterflies in your stomach feeling of first love, a cute and endearing romance - not a genre you often see bi characters in, who used to be confined to stories about raunchy sexual experimentation, threesomes, etc (As a bi teen it's all I got and honestly it contributed to me not taking my own sexuality seriously for so long) Here there's none of that shock/scandal factor - Nick gets to be a little romantic hero that stands in the rain getting drenched because he is so overcome with feelings, like he's replaying Pride and Prejudice. It's adorable and it's humanizing, like good romance is, flaws seen with empathy, characters allowed to be vulnerable and complex and not some spicy episode of the week.

It's not prudish either like the chemistry between the actors is super believable and also - it's so obvious that they are absolutely delighted to be in each other's presence !!! And honestly more romances, queer or straight, should be like this. Like it should be obvious that the characters are just this absolutely giddy at seeing each other and being close - and that's too rare.

Linked to this, having a bi character in a story aimed at younger teen audiences, that is sweet and non explicit - ofc we still need portrayals of queer sexuality, but unfortunately that's all bi people used to get for the longest time, as something considered intrinsically 'more adult' - and that's bullshit ! there are bi kids who need stories like this !!!! And being bi is about love just as much !!! I'm so glad this show exists !!!! Showing that it's okay to take your time with these things and that even holding hands can be a big deal and that's wonderful !

Also related to this - a lot of the more positive bi representation tends to also sort of become this cliché where they're all these flirty, confident, seductive super badasses, often adventurers or superheroes. (Ok I like those characters and the idea that being bi automatically makes you cool tbh). But it's a lot of pressure. Normal regular boring bis also need representation. Nick's not boring, he's a little star athlete, he's probably the coolest character in the show lmao but he's still a regular kid and that's nice.

Which little baby bi hasn't had those feelings about Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom in PotC, huh ? Most relatable moment of the show for me lmfao brilliant - that sense of overwhelming 'oh no they're all hot' is bi culture!!!!! yes!!!

His process of figuring out his sexuality is taken seriously !!!! Man this made me cry a little because - yeah, again, most bi characters nowadays, even when they're good rep, they generally have everything figured out because their sexuality is seen as them being more liberated and enlightened and honestly I think that's kind of problematic, even if well meaning ? It trivializes the particular struggles of being bi, like it's just 'gay-lite' and they end up being mentors of gay characters and side characters whose individual stories are easier, more simple/less interesting and honestly I feel like in reality that's anything but true. Nick gets an episode to confirm that yes, he's still into girls and his feelings for girls earlier are not erased by his attraction to Charlie. Bisexual identity doesn't change or disappear depending on who you are with.

that part with the youtuber explaining that bisexuality at first is often an experience of constantly second guessing yourself !! yeah !! that was so real ! I was in that phase for such a long time, and seeing Nick attain a stage of certainty rather quickly was so nice to see - important also to see that his mother has a sort of reflex to tell him he 'doesn't have to say he's into girls' because bisexuality is generally conceptualized as a stepping stone and he explicitly corrects her. It's a big deal ! And that's important because I feel a lot of bi people feel less valid than gay people and that they have to minimize their own experiences/not make a fuss so as not to appropriate/take attention away from 'real queerness' or something. And that has real consequences in terms of self-image and mental health and community support. So yeah, the narrative giving it weight and time is really groundbreaking. It's just treated with such nuance and respect. It's wonderful.

Honestly in general it's very common for bi people to figure out their sexuality at a later age than their gay peers, because having crushes on the opposite gender means you are less likely to question yourself. Nick needing time to figure things out isn't presented as a bad thing, it's Charlie's specific history of being hurt by this before that makes the situation difficult for him. And the fact that it ties into him also realizing he was just going with the flow not really being true to himself - questioning your sexuality can also have a ricochet effect on how you stand in the world and - yeah I just thought the whole thing was so realistic and true to lived experience.

The reason Nick agrees to go on a date with a girl is not because he's two-timing Charlie but simply because he cares too much about her feelings to let her down in front of everyone or because her dog died (and he brings his dog to console her when he goes to let her down !). His main character flaw is that, by virtue of being a popular, athletic jock, he's oblivious to the shittiness of his friends - you get the feeling that he's a sunny, happy guy used to breezing through life, who probably prefers to get along with everyone, and that might have insulated him from certain realities, but he's still a very caring person. And he tells the truth to Charlie and makes it right pretty quickly. It's a very good send off of the trope of the untrustworthy bisexual who was secretly dating a girl the whole time. Meanwhile Ben, one of the bad guys of the story, who was dating a girl and treating Charlie like shit because he hates himself, and could be a bad bi cliché, isn't given a label, which I think was a smart writing choice.

It's just great queer rep in general because it centers queer joy so powerfully, it's sweet without being saccharine - difficult topics are talked about with nuance, it doesn't hide or minimize real hurt and prejudice, but it gives more time and importance to its characters being happy and giddy and in love and having fun, which makes it feel so safe and soothing to watch. Elle's story is another example of this - her specific experiences as a trans girl who recently changed schools are central to her story, but she also gets to be a regular teen girl who has a complicated crush on her best friend and stresses out about making friends at her new school and gets milkshakes and arcade games with her squad. It's great.

And yeah this general celebration of queer friendship and mutual support is super important to a good bisexual representation too - Nick's amazement and relief at seeing Tara and Darcy kissing publicly - like !!! which closeted baby queer hasn't felt that exhilarating sense of possibility and belonging and yearning and awe at seeing other people being gay and in love in public ! That was so wholesome and beautiful - and him being so eager to talk to them afterwards, adorable. Because being openly yourself often has that sort of domino effect on others. Seeing other people doing it, makes it become real for you, too. I think this is also especially important for bi people, because they tend to be more alienated from the queer community as a whole.

So yeah so much love for this show - I've followed the comics for a long time and they are also wonderful, but the show added its own brand of charm and heart, and I'm so happy it exists. It makes me a bit sad too, nostalgic for an experience I never had, because my own experiences were so different, the reality I grew up in as a bi teen was so much meaner and more bigoted and violent and vulgar and lonely, but even if this show is probably not the reality for a lot of baby bis still, it gives me hope we are moving in the right direction. <3

About Me

I am nonbinary and neptunic (or lesbian, if that makes more sense, though I’m also likely some flavor of aro/ace?), and go by he/they pronouns. Though, frankly, anything other than she/her pronouns are fine with me.

I am white, trilingual (Portuguese, Spanish, and English), and from Brazil. 🇧🇷 Oi, gente!

I am also autistic, and have *breathes in dramatically* social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trichotillomania, dermatillomania, and maladaptive daydreaming issues (it isn’t officially a disorder yet). I am able-bodied and have relatively low support needs.

As you may be able to tell, I don’t really have that good of a sense of what is and isn’t private, so I’ll probably answer any questions you may have! Ask away if you feel like it!

My special interests are: snakes, atypical psychology, Greek mythology, and Egyptian mythology. I also like horror as a genre, as well as art in general.

i don't think i need sex as soon as i get into a relationship. I can wait weeks, months, hell, could be a year. Maybe you'll think that's me saying i'm nervous about it, but i'm really not, i think it's good when you take things slow. I also would never want my partner to think i just want them for sex.

because that's not what it is. sure, i'd love to have sex for the first time, i'd love to do things with them, but i do not need to. If all they want to do is kiss, i can wait, i can be patient. I'm not patient with so many things, but something like that, idk, i see it as serious.

i'd want the first time to be special, not spontaneous, or, ig it could be spontaneous, but really i just want to build up to it. Was watching heartstopper season 2 finally and the episode i'm on was making me think about this. I think i look at it how Charlie does.

"If you want to, I do too." Like, no matter the time, but that's not all i want.

I also want to hold my boyfriend's hand. I want to show him where i grew up. i want to share passages from my favorite books with him. i want to do new things with him, maybe we can learn how to roller skate, or literally anything else.

I do have dirty thoughts, like, constantly, but i'm not just rearing to go 24/7. or well. maybe i am. it actually might be rare for me to not be. is that my hormones????

but anyways that's why i have this blog, to get all that shit out of my head, cuz if i didn't i think id be a lot crazier irl.

Sabine, I don't know where to start, but I think I figured out I'm bisexual. I'm in my thirties now and always thought I'm hetero. Had some hookups and relationships with boys. But at the same time I always had this... feeling... around some girls. I didn't know what it was, until recently, after binge-watching heartstopper. Being a Larrie for a few years and - because of that - learning so much about LGBTQ+ helped me figuring out, too.

I finally realised I had some serious crushes on some female friends back in school, and it broke my heart when our friendship ended back then. I just never understood why it hurt me so bad.

And now I was at this concert a few weeks ago and for the first time ever I flirted with a girl. It was so wonderful and I enjoyed it so much.

I think I'm beyond the confusing point in figuring out, but I just don't know what to do now. I don't want to come out too soon, I'm scared of being rejected and hated. And I feel kind of embarrassed, because I'm so "old" but so unexperienced with girls.

I told you all this because I always feel so safe while reading your blog. I hope I didn't bother you with my message.

I don’t think it’s very unusual to figure these things out later in life, I wouldn’t be too worried about that.

I feel like sexuality should be more about the journey. My auntie was married (to a man) and had kids first, and when the relationship fell apart that’s when she first started dating women. She was much older than you at the time. She’s super happy and content in her life now, has a partner and a dog, and it all makes sense.

If someone is worth your time and interest, they will want to know about your journey, and they will bring the emotional maturity and empathy to respect it. You might be surprised and be coincidentally drawn to someone with a similar experience altogether.

And about coming out? Maybe involve those who truly matter to this journey first, those who won’t judge you, those who will cheer you on, those you would always confide in, so you’re not alone with this.

A proper coming out isn’t necessary at all for now, if there isn’t anyone to step out with. And your sexuality is private. Protect your heart and follow your gut. Unraveling something about yourself that was so deeply unknown to yourself for so long, is in itself a love story to enjoy. You’re so very much closer to you, that authenticity will give you a good indication of what should be done next. It’s all about you! 💋

favorite color: Blue, it's always been blue. When I was in jr high I tried to pretend it was black because I was emo, but it was still blue. Specifically a bright blue.

last song: Well I'm currently watching Glee, so it would be Hold On. But outside of that, it's Starting Gun by Mad Moon Riot. I was in a nostalgic mood.

last movie: I just watched All You Ever Wished For yesterday and Puppy Love the day before that (it's been a week for bad romcoms). In theaters I saw Jurrasic Park in 3D for National Cinema Day a few weeks ago.

currently watching: Currently in season 5 of Glee and of course keeping up on Ahsoka as it airs.

other stuff I watched this year: TV: I was watching White Collar and Red Dwarf, I still need to finish both of those but Glee distracted me. I also rewatched all of Farscape, Stargate SG-1, and Jericho, and of course Heartstopper when season 2 came out. Movies wise I saw Barbie and Oppenheimer, the new Scream, and Cocaine Bear. I feel like there were other new things Ive watched recently but I don't remember what.

shows I dropped this year/didn't finish: I haven't watched any new shows to drop, but I did pause in my Red Dwarf rewatch for White Collar and then I paused that for a Glee rewatch, but I will get back to them, eventually.

currently reading: Still need to finish Red White and Royal Blue, but I just started I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself. And then for fanfic I'm in the middle of How Bright We Burn and Bad Seeds (both Seblaine at Dalton AUs) and Don't You Remember (A Kurtbastian fic). I'm also in the middle of the audiobook for Stranger Than Fanfiction

currently listening to: I've of course been obsessively listening to the Nerdy Prudes Must Die album since it came out, and then also just all of Chord Overstreets songs. And then for podcasts I've been listening to Woe.Begone of course but I'm way behind on Malevolent and Celler Letters.

currently working on: I've been outlining my 3-part Season 2/3 AU that I'm affectionately referring to as The Hevans Saga, The Klaine Saga, and The Seblaine Saga. And of course I'm still in the middle of writing things for Seblaine week and I started a part 2 of my Autistic!Kurt AU.

current obsession: Seblaine almost feels too obvious, but it's accurate. But also just thinking about Glee in general and specifically Blaine, Kurt, and Sam and all of the ways they were screwed over by the show and how many fics I want to write to fix it.

HI BRY! thank you so much, and i am so sorry this is getting to you so late! and i really hope the vibes of my blog are even a quarter of cosiness of the heartstopper sweater

as requested, here is your will and jem headcanon <3

i can only imagine that considering jem was destined to die quite early, he had a little bucket list of things he wanted to do before he eventually died

and will being will found this hidden in jem’s room

he took note of what things jem wanted to do and he just started to slowly tick off things

will didn’t want jem to notice will was taking him out to do these things on purpose… more like a happy coincidence

but jem, as we know, is quite observant, and he seemed to notice a pattern in the places will would take him, the foods will would make him try, the books will would give him

so jem would tick off the things on his list, and add new ones, leaving the list in the same spot for Will to look at.

eventually it turned into a “let’s see how many will can force jem to do in a year” challenge

sometimes, will would smash out three things in one day, which would leave jem to retire to his bedroom for a week

on jem’s slower days, will would try and do the more quieter wishes, like sitting by the fire together while jem teaches will how to play wei qi

either way, they both enjoyed how it made them even closer and it also gave them ideas of things to do on their days off

neither of them spoke about the bucket list. it ruined the whole fun of it. after all, they were just two parabatai having fun together, right?

name and whatever you want to share about yourself Y'all can find my real name with little to no digging but I'm Mano and I'm a queer neurodivergent middle-aged cislady who lives in the US with my pupper (who you can see on my blog) Lillie Bear/Lovebug/Buggy (depending on my mood) and my husband because yep queer gals sometimes marry people who don't share their sex/gender. I'm a former public librarian. I'm a radical fat lady (rad fat acceptance/rad fat pol), an enthusiastic happy auntie, and just generally living my most joyful life.

when did you watch bad buddy/join the fandom? I wish I knew when I first watched. It was definitely after April 22, 2022 (when I watched Heartstopper for the first time). So probably early May 2022, because I think I activated iQiyi for KP on May 27, and I had watched BBS by then. In terms of the fandom, well...Deepa was my first fandom interaction, and I think she followed me on Twitter because of a fic I wrote. I'm private on Twitter though, so my presence in the fandom is (still) very small.

favorite ship(s) Oh PatPran all the way every day. I am a...sucker for a good canon ship. I almost exclusively read/interact with canon ships. Can't explain it, it's just what my brain wants.

favorite character(s) Pat. Hands down, every day of the week and twice on Sunday and with no hesitation. But I also admit to a very deep fascination with Dissaya. And I like Uncle Tong.

favorite episode(s) episode 5 because kiss scene on roof so good. But I also love episode 11, even though I find it deeply sad.

favorite scene(s) I mean, rooftop kiss. But my second favorite scene, and a scene I screenshot constantly just for shits and giggles, is the scene in episode 11, after their night together, when Pat comes out of the bedroom and onto the balcony, and Pran senses him and looks up at Pat with a fucking WIDE-ASS clear as a bell smile of joy. Because Pat knows at that moment, and Pran has already known, that the honeymoon has to end. But Pat also knows that smiling boy is his. And it's all in Pat's face when he looks down at Pran.

one thing you would change about the show if you could great question. And so many of my first thoughts about this I've just summarily rejected in the last 45 seconds of thinking. I don't know, man. I am stumped.

what are your some of your favorite fanworks made by other people? This is not in any way a reflection on the quality of the fanfic out there, but I am a one-and-done kinda gal with fanfic. I love you all, and I love all your fics, believe you me. That I don't have titles here isn't a reflection on you. It's me! I do have some fave edits though; there is something about watching these vids, set to this music that just...MY HEART.

There are two other vids that I watch on the regular, by Twitter user @yoonglesismydad. One is set to Jab Se Tujhe Hai Jaana and the other is Tum Hi Ho. I have watched (and cried) to the Tum Hi Ho one five million times.

I mostly think of this as a song for Pran. I know it's from another piece of romance media but who cares this is Pran's song for Pat. Prove me wrong.

idk anything else you want us to know? Bad Buddy changed my life. You should read "This is Not a Book about Benedict Cumberbatch" to begin to understand how and why. But no seriously, I think of my life as BEFORE BBS and AFTER BBS and yep, I'm happier than I've ever been.
