Parallels between Reiner and Historia

They both have such obvious parallels to eachother that I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone talk about it yet, so I will.

They're both results of affairs that could risk theirs and their parents' lives, with Historia's mother having Historia in hopes of being married to Rod, and Reiner's mother expressing her heartbreak over not being able to live with Reiner's father. They are used by the parents for their own reasons while disguising their true intentions, also being taught that they are sinful by the main older figure in their life (Karina to Reiner, and Frieda to Historia)

Both of their Father's also have their own family outside of their affairs. Both attempt to connect with their parents that aren't present within their lives, but are faced with rejection.

Their main reasons for wanting to inherit a titan is so that their fathers would finally accept them.

They convinced themselves that their actions, that really came from a desire to be respected and loved, were from a place of wanting to save humanity or others (Historia admitted that Ymir knew her intentions more than Historia herself did, leading me to believe that she wasn't fully aware of why she wanted to make herself a martyr). Those 'honorable' actions weren't that honorable, either. The people around them just convinced them they were, they (would have) ended up repeating the same mistakes as previous generations.

This want for respect is what lead them to creating new personalities for themselves during their time in the 104th cadet corps, where they played the role of someone selfless, always having the backs of others, even if it made things harder for them, or other people. If my memory serves me correctly, they were the most popular in the 104th for this reason, which was a contrast to the lack of respect they were showed from their peers in their childhood.

However they both wanted to help people, especially people they sympathised with. When Eren showed signs of giving up and devaluing himself, they both tried to help him.

The only reason they were able to do so well in their training was because of the interference of another person (but with Historia, it was to protect her, while with reiner, it was to protect someone else, so this isn't the best comparison).

And that person then attempted to or successfully sacrifice themselves for them.

However they begin to differentiate when Historia manages to escape her toxic mindset and reject her father's wishes before she inherits the titan and making an irreversible mistake in the name of respect, which Reiner is not able to do. He realises his mindset was wrong far too late, likely due to the fact he didn't have a Ymir in his life, once again being cursed by his environment.

I know I'm far from the first to compare what's happening in Gaza to the Holocaust, but I visited a local Holocaust museum today and one particular comparison struck me that I haven't seen much talk about.

See, people say that Gaza's like the Holocaust, because... genocide, and then the other side goes "nuh-uh, this isn't like the camps at all!"

And there's some truth to that. This is not the systematic mass murder of the gas chambers and death camps, nor is it the forced labor until death found in the work camps.

But there's another, much better-fitting Holocaust parallel here, if you just look slightly earlier in the timeline of genocide there.

See, here's the situation in Gaza, as I understand it:

The people in power ("oppressors") have decided that a certain race of people ("oppressed") within one specific part of the land they control cannot be trusted. This decision is, ostensibly, linked to various horrible crimes committed against the oppressors by individuals within the oppressed class; the truth behind the alleged crimes is arguable, but suffice it to say that even if the worst claims are true, they still do not even come close to justify subjecting an entire race of people to the ensuing mistreatment in return.

So, the oppressors designate one specific piece of land to be an area for the oppressed race to live by taking away their right to own property or even just to exist outside of that bit of land. A bit of land that, mind you, really isn't big enough for the population of people being forced to live there, inevitably leading to overcrowding and various resultant problems. The oppressors know this; they just either don't care or actually desire the suffering caused by this overcrowding.

Walls are built around this piece of land. The identification papers for all of its residents clearly signify that they are of the oppressed race, and that their civil liberties are to be curtailed because of it. Passage of people to and from this piece of land is heavily restricted, as is the movement of goods of all kinds in and out of its walls.

The exchange of information in and out of the land is restricted to some extent, too, but this isn't as easy to enforce as preventing escapees--and even there, the odd escape does happen too. The bigger piece of the puzzle regarding why people don't speak out about the oppressed being mistreated is the oppressors' propaganda machine working hard to ensure that people just... don't look too closely. Because who cares about the suffering of those people, anyway?

So, the most straightforward means of outright genocide from here are either attacking the residents of that small piece of land directly or forced movement so they can be slaughtered--sorry, "resettled"--elsewhere. But the quieter, more subtle method of genocide is just... preventing food and other essentials from passing through those walls, letting the overcrowding get worse and worse over time, denying medical treatment and other humanitarian aid to the oppressed people in desperate need of such assistance, and then sitting back and watching them slowly die off.

So no, Gaza isn't the camps. That much is true.

Gaza is the ghetto. Israel just remade the Warsaw ghetto.

Then they're surprised and outraged when the people of Gaza engage in even the most minor acts of rebellion in response, even as Israelis sing the praises of the Warsaw uprising in that other ghetto less than a century ago.

supernatural s1e2 wendigo (teleplay: eric kripke, story: ron milbauer, terri hughes burton)

quelled my irrational anxiety long enough to start the rewatch and recap what i have not yet recapped and thank fuck for that because not having my scheduled evening task was not going well. i am staunchly ignoring the not-so-distant future where i will again be out-of-task.

fun fact this is the first screenshot i took while watching this show, long before i considered doing these posts. brotherly chat at the fire, if i recall correctly. we'll soon see! thought it'd be a fun easy draw because it's almost entirely dark with the little kiss of light around his profile.

David Nutter, even with his extensive experience in the industry, was impressed by Padalecki and Ackles' chemistry. Never have I done a show where two actors clicked so well together. These guys had never met each other before and it was like they were instantly brothers.S1Com

hey, it's one of the xfiles-y sounds (when she says "our packs!") i didn't notice this until way way later. grabbed a clip of it from 10x12 compared to the same effect used in the xf movie fight the future (because i happened to know where the sound was in that movie, it's def a standard xf score sound.) i think it was just a lot more forward in that s10 clip, maybe that's why it caught my ear and had slid by unnoticed before.

it's this kind of thing that grabbed me by the throat early on. clear communication, sam has been deflecting but he opened up a crack after dean gently pushed again. and dean is honest and kind, trying to take care of sam. ugh. hurt/comfort my beloved.

buh, this action music when roy gets yoinked by the monster is not great.

SAM So we've got half a chance in the daylight. And I for one want to kill this evil son of a bitch.

snorted. i swear sam got stuck with some cheesy lines back in the day. part of my hot take theory of why jackles's acting stood out more to me initially, i think he just got better dialogue. padalecki hit it out of the park with those moments with jackles, but same episode he had a lot of like... i'm taking charge of the situation moments that felt awkward

this scene obviously has been gif'd to death but i didn't really remember the context and it makes it all the better. sam gets to return the very long staring moment, and lets dean give him a little treat to take care of him and make him feel better that he declined earlier

and jared, you made a choice with that expression. I think that look could be enough to launch a thousand ships alone. the line feels like it should be kind of teasing mischievous little brother vibes, but his face says unbearable affection and something I'd expect more out of a romantic-dynamic teasing feel. wild

When the Stars Alight appreciation week — Day 4

When the Stars Alight is @aninkwellofnectar's debut novel, first in the Essence of the Equinox series.

I didn't want to post around Christmas because I could practically hear crickets on my dash, but now that it seems to have revived a little, I can continue with WTSA appreciation week.

Day 4: Parallels to other media or your own work

I've compared WTSA to The Vampire Diaries TV show a billion times by now, so this is the perfect chance for a deep dive.

Of course, the most surface-level parallel is the love triangle between two brothers who are in love with the same woman, which is probably the one thing you've heard of about TVD even if you haven't seen a single episode. The Laila-Darius-Dominus triangle instantly struck me as the more mature and tragic version of that, one that commits to the brothers being monsters. It feels like the author saw the dynamic in TVD and went the "what if" route with her novel, a route I immensely enjoyed. Don't get me wrong, I like the path TVD chooses, it makes more sense for the genre and target audience, but we've all felt that curiosity to know what would've happened if the story had taken a different turn.

Something that, for me, emphasizes the connection to the TVD love triangle is that Laila herself reminds me of a better version of Elena. Darius and Dominus do remind me of Damon and Stefan too, but the line here is blurred. Laila, though, has some of Elena's core characteristics, not just surface-level similarities. In the show, what defines Elena is her compassion... Too bad I've never bought that. Elena's kindness feels very performative and, in turn, what strikes me about her are her manipulative tendencies. In turn, Laila is genuinely compassionate and righteous, always trying to change the world for the better, while also often being manipulative — which is one of my favourite aspects of her character. Laila is both who TVD thinks Elena is and what she could've been if the writers had committed to her flaws, instead of sweeping them under the rug.

Another parallel is how much Laila and Darius remind me of Caroline and Klaus's relationship. While on the surface Laila and Darius parallel Elena and Damon, at a deeper analysis I feel like they have more of Caroline and Klaus in them, both the characters themselves and the relationship proper. This will come as a surprise to absolutely no one, especially not the author, who feeds me with Klaroline quotes over Laila and Darius reels.

Laila and Caroline are both smart but naïve, young immortals, contrasting with Darius and Klaus, who are also immortal, but have already lived for centuries. They offer a counterpart with much more experience and a darkness to them as well (I couldn't go a whole post without mentioning the dark/light theme). Darius reminds me in particular of early days Klaus, during the few episodes he appears in in season 2: the very mysterious, ruthless, charming version we see in Katherine's flashbacks.

Speaking of Laila, even though her story isn't finished, I can see her going on a path of emancipation and empowerment like Caroline. Laila is already a princess, but she's very much subjected to her mother's control. I'm excited to watch her stepping out from under Amira's thumb and fully realise herself.

The last comparison I can make is way less interesting and deep, but the effects of chaos magic and, therefore, Mortesian demons' true faces remind me of TVD vampires: fangs, change in eye colour, blackened veins especially. I don't know if it was a conscious decision on the author's part, but the way vampires look in TVD has always been a cool aesthetic choice in my opinion, so I couldn't not appreciate it.

hello!!! sorry to scream in ur ask box but i saw ur essay abt sean while going thru the tags and saw that u also loved namo!! i was wondering if u had any more thoughts on namo and sean bc i actually rlly love their relationship/friendship, i think he's so sweet to her and she in turn is very honest and open with him!

hi!!! never apologize for screaming about shows in my ask box anon! so even though we haven't seen sean & namo in a little while, I fucking love them together! before white she is the only person sean seems to be fully himself & open to discussions with, and I really enjoy their dynamic!!!

so namo appears in ep 2 for the first time, after the boys have burned down tawi's house, and we see her doing some street art. in most of her appearances she's always doing art bc it is the main component of her character, & it's very clear that p'nuchie wants to include as much art & artistic expression in not me through namo, dan, eugene, that rapper, etc. and up until that moment, sean has appeared as an incredibly rough & closed-off character, and frankly that scene was a turning point for me starting to take real interest in him bc it's the first time we see sean outside of the gang & smiling. that scene might not be the most important of the series, but it establishes many things: first sean is very layered & actually a soft boi, second namo exists & she's an artist, and third & most importantly, namo's opinion matters A LOT to sean.

this whole scene is sean asking namo what she thinks of his actions, and it's really fascinating to see sean asking someone for their opinion about what he's done bc that's something he really doesn't do with any other character, appearing crazy for revenge to the rest of the gang. (until white of course!)

in their second scene together in ep 3, once again we see them hang out completely detached from the gang, and once again sean is helping namo with her art, showing how close they are to each other. and I love that scene not only because of how hot off is playing the bass (though it’s of course part of it lol), but also because we start seeing how much namo can see right through sean & how much she cares about him.

we see her immediately notice that sean has something on his mind, and he doesn’t hesitate to confide in her about the black situation, which once again is one of the only moments of vulnerability sean has up until that point. and namo not only listens attentively, but actually pushes sean to communicate with black, which is something that is obviously very hard for sean to do bc his social skills become shit around black/white lol. so while the first scene established how much sean cares about namo, scene 2 establishes that on top of that, namo is a really good influence in sean’s life & cares about him all the same. in that same scene, we see her interact with yok who asks her about unar. I really enjoyed that because this scene and the other one with yok in episode 5 where sean isn’t even there shows that namo isn’t only there to be the “vague love interest who will get her heart broken”, but she is actually impactful to two different storylines, on top of being her own strong person through all of her art that is showcased on the show.

and then, in ep 4, the plot thickens. sean & namo have been established to be very close, to trust each other, which would mean in most media around the world that they’re dating bc two people of the opposite gender can never be friends apparently lol. but then yok asks sean if namo has ever drawn him, and he says no. that comparison is striking when you see that danyok, the secondary ship, have both drawn each other before they’ve even had a proper conversation lmao. that parallel cannot be ignored and seems to show a flaw in sean & namo’s relationship. yok is surprised by that, saying “she’s your girlfriend but she’s never asked to draw you?” and that’s when sean replies that he’s never asked namo to be his girlfriend. so either namo is just his best friend who likely likes him & will get heartbroken by seanwhite according to the trailer, or they’re just casual & never really agreed to anything but still kinda dating. which in any case makes me pull up the 👀 emoji.

then in ep 5, the plot thickens AGAIN when white walks in on sean & namo sleeping on the bed together. I think we have to take into context that in 99% of thai dramas, a man & a woman just sleeping next to each other is seen as incredibly intimate so this is quite a big deal, even when they still have their clothes on & nothing seems to have happened. that scene is very removed from sean & namo though, and rather shows white’s jealousy of them two, even though he refuses to admit it. after sean had his first nightmare in ep 4 & cuddled with white, he is now in another vulnerable position (sleeping) with namo, and obviously white doesn’t like it. namo is perceptive as hell as always & immediately knows she gotta go bc “black” is uncomfortable with her presence. and the following scene is really interesting for her & sean.

when sean wants to drive her back, she calls a cab because she knows he needs to talk to black. she’s been aware of the problem with this new “black” since ep 3 & once again pushes sean towards actually expressing his feelings instead of pushing them down. once again they have a calm discussion about the issue with black, and namo really truly acts like sean conscience. she’s like a little angel on his shoulder always pushing him in the right direction of communication rather than just letting things bubble up. it is also important to note that once again like in every scene with her, sean is incredibly soft & does kinda act like a boyfriend (or at least what has been presented as boyfriend behavior by once again, the media) by walking her back to the car, telling her that she can always come by if she has a problem, and asking her to call him when she gets home (a favorite romantic trope of thai dramas.) like I’m sorry I don’t make the rules but these two are cute as hell lol.

we also learn another side of namo which is that her family doesn’t get the art that she does, and that she likely had a fight with them which is why she was sleeping over in the first place. once again, that small detail can feel insignificant, but it does help make namo more than a background character. we can imagine what her whole life is like even though she’s literally been in only 5 scenes. she’s not just a throw-away character, she matters.

and so far, that’s all we’ve seen of namo! I don’t know if she’ll be in ep 8 but I hope she comes back soon because I miss her! (even though let’s be honest her presence might announce some complications for seanwhite...) I also can’t help but compare sean & namo’s relationship as a softer version of teh & tarn in I told sunset about you. in itsay, teh is in his talking stage with tarn before they start dating at the end of high school, but before that he rekindles his friendship with oh-aew & starts falling for him instead, slowly pulling away from tarn who’s obviously heartbroken. here, even though sean & namo’s relationship isn’t very clear, I do think it crosses friendship & they’re likely to be in their talking stage as well, though it might be blurry since they seem to have been friends for a while. but here too, sean is starting to open up to white in a way he previously only did with namo, and with ep 8 we know he’ll probably open up more to white than he’s ever done with anyone else, including her. slowly, namo is getting side-lined :( I do hope they don’t go full “sad girl rejected by the mlm’s” trope, but I do trust p’nuchie to not mess this up. I also do hope we still get to see namo with sean because I do love them as friends & it’s very rare to see mixed friendships actually portrayed well on screen. hope you enjoyed this small essay anon <3

I watched the season Seabound from Ninjago and I have some thoughts about it

Disclaimer 1: Any strong emotion shown in this post is exaggerated for fun purposes and not meant to take it seriously. The genuine critiques are meant to be respectful or lighthearted

Disclaimer 2: I like making disclaimers (also heads up, there will be spoilers in this post!)

With that aside, this season was fun! Nya is one of my favorite characters, so I was eager to see a season focused on her, even if it was kind of short (I will elaborate on this point later)

First, I want to say that I haven't seen all the recent seasons yet (more specifically 9, 10, 12, 13 and The Island). I know what happens in them, but I couldn’t bring myself to sit and watch them yet, and being Romanian makes it a little harder to find proper sites to say the least. Thankfully, it wasn’t needed to watch them for this season, since I understood all that happened

This brings me to the first compliment I want to give for the season: the story was on point and not difficult to follow. They didn’t complicate it too much than necessary, which is nice! It left room for exploring relationships and emotions

Speaking of which, I always liked the way Ninjago handles emotions. They’re honest and quiet, in a way to show respect and understanding. You know that what happens matters to the characters, and I’m so glad they’re good at that because when Nya’s funeral came up, they put all the effort to show how much she meant for everyone

Nya’s relationship with her mother Maya was also so fun to see! I’m glad that they showed more of the Smith parents and the relationship between them and their children, it made me grow more attached to them and think they’re beyond just “parents”. The Smith family is on the top of my favorites, which I think it’s a good and bad thing at the same time

The dialogue in this season was also fun. There were many times when I felt what they said was genuine and smart, and the cookie line at the end was a simple parallelism, but an effective one. The fact that it was simple is what made it stuck to me and appreciate it (and if the fact that Kai and Jay, the ones who are the closest to Nya, almost drowned in this season for the intentional purpose of making the connection to water, then I will give the writers points for smartness)

And even if the main villain was not for me, I can see and understand why would people like him

Overall, this season was fun and emotional, and I’m definitely looking forward to how it will go next season!

Now let’s get on the negatives

Alright, to start it off, the season lacked in build-up for being short. I felt around the middle that it was moving from point A to point B without leaving time to process it. I know they have limited time, but I feel like season 11 did a better job at handling it, at least in the first half, and I use that as comparison

I definitely felt the rush in action the moment Benthomaar told the others about his past in “The Tale of Benthomaar”. Because even if they just met him, after he told them his tragic backstory, they were like “You’re our friend now and we trust you until the very end”, which it would have been better handled if it was at least one more episode where they get to interact more before this one

But I do understand the lack of time and having few episodes that limited how much they can show. With this time, each episode has to be meaningful, and they have to give much thought into what they can and can’t do

Well at least, I would have understood better if “Riddle of the Sphinx” dIDN’T EXIST-

Ok listen, I do get what they tried to do. They wanted to show that the others do something and are part of the plot, while going to a more lighthearted route. But did they really, really, have to go with one of the oldest riddles in history? And make that Wu, of all people, didn’t know the correct answer to it?? When Kai gave the right answer, I was relieved, not surprised, and got me thinking that Wu and Cole need to read the first chapter of a riddle book in the future

Seriously, that time could have been used for something else, or they could have at least given a twist to the riddle

The part when Nya has to learn to communicate to the whales doesn’t make it better, because I know they can use the dragons

I miss the dragons

For real tho, why do they want to acknowledge the existence of dragons in season 11, but never even consider using them? I don’t want them to constantly use them, since it can be dangerous, but I want them to use them when it’s really needed

I know the writers wanted to make Nya use her powers, but I don’t see the need for it. It’s not like she used this power to do something completely important other than getting away from the island

… When they could have used the dragons-

Going to a different point, there was a lack of comedy in this season, which is one of the things I’m sad about. The thing that I love about Ninjago (and lego related things in general), is its comedy, because even if the story can be wonky or very simple, at least it makes me laugh and I have a good time. “The Virtues of Spinjitzu” is a good example for this, because even if some things from the plot are on the nose, it was hilarious as hell, especially the beginning, which is what makes it memorable and makes me desire to rewatch it someday

Seabound… didn’t have that. The jokes were not that funny for me, which I find unfortunate. It was the first season where I felt that, and I hope it will be the only one

The last point I want to make is that it’s visible some of the characters took the short end of the stick in being relevant this season. I know, this is not the first time it happened, and the creators most likely wanted to concentrate on other characters to balance their lack of focus in previous seasons, but you can write a season focused on one character and make the ones around it feel relevant as well. I genuinely prefer not to be any focus character in the season rather than sacrificing characters for one’s main story

One thing that bothered me the most was the lack of focus on Kai specifically, because this season was about his sister, and in this season, Nya struggles with her family relationship and herself. I’m sad that she and Kai didn’t have a moment when they both talked about their different perspective about their parents, and I’m sad that Kai wasn’t much shown in this season when he loses his sister

The thing that I love the most in this series is their sibling bond, with how they can bicker but care for each other deeply, and it was unfortunate to see a lack of it in this season, especially since it may take a while to see them together again

I do understand that the writers wanted to go with Kai being in a state of shock/processing about Nya’s “death” at the end, but I want to see him grieve in the next season. I want that the moment he’s showing his thoughts and feelings about Nya, his sister he cares deeply, the focus will be on him, like it was with Jay this season

So, the conclusion is that even if I enjoyed this season, I do have my issues with it. And even if I’m looking forward for the next season, I’ll keep my hopes low until I see it for myself, no matter how much it gets hyped

I’m a big fan of Ninjago, and I genuinely want to see it getting better with the pacing, comedy, and characterization

And please Ninjago, no more riddles/hj

Meghan would like to go out in a car crash. It would be another parallel with her obsession, Diana.

Ironic, isn’t it?

Vehicular accident in California isn't surprising. Have you ever driven there? I have. Ugh. I haven't seen the statistics, but having been in several car accidents myself, it is a common way of dying in the US. Meghan would never die with the paparazzi chasing her, as Diana did. And of course the BRF would not enjoy any comparisons because then they are going to have to endure all the conspiracy theories that they had Meghan killed off.

I started thinking about it last fall (2020) when I was reading something that reminded me of Meghan’s chart. It actually--ironically--may have been a description of Princess Diana’s chart because one of my books on Varshaphala (annual solar charts) details Diana’s death as seen in both her natal and annual charts. Then a month or two ago, I was reading different Vedic astrology book, which described the death of John Jr. (JFK Jr.) since he died in a vehicular (plane) accident, which reminded me of Meghan’s chart again. The way little Lili’s Venus is placed reminds me of John Jr.’s natal Venus is situated. Not exactly but some similar indications.

This is Meghan’s natal chart, the main birth chart (not any divisional chart).

She has a Cancer ascendant, which is ruled by the Moon. Moon is placed in the 3rd house (short journeys). The Moon is closely conjunct Jupiter and Saturn. Jupiter & Saturn are actually in a planetary war (graha yudda), but that’s not significant at the moment. Jupiter rules the 6th house (accidents), and Saturn rules the 8th house (accidents). Saturn is also a maraka (killing/death) for Cancer ascendant since it rules the 7th house. All three planets are aspected by Mars via its 4th house aspect. Mars is the planet of speed and violence. Mars is located in her 12th house (loss), which can indicate losses through speed. Her Mars is in Gemini, which is the natural sign of the 3rd house (short-distance travel). Her Mars is also located in Ardra nakshatra, which is associated with tragedy. I think there are definite indications that this accident could happen in her Jupiter-Venus dasa, which runs from June 2023 to February 2026, and quite possibly after her 44th birthday.

After thinking about that, I tend to think that Meghan--even though she has caused a boatload of turmoil and trouble--is a sad and tragic figure. She was completely unable to be happy, even though she got everything she could have possibly wanted: fame, money, fans, creature comforts, and children. Instead, she was mean. She was cruel. She was a liar. She was fame-hungry. She was rude. She was grossly inconsiderate. She was incapable of ever being happy or considerate of those closest to her.

LISTEN, LAUREN. I am always up to share my thoughts because they never end and they just keep coming and I have to unleash them somehow or I will definitely explode.

My brain was just like, ALL CAPS SCREAMING, for about 7 hours yesterday, so I’ll leave you to explore that hot mess on my blog if you want. 😅 But, in the time since, I’ve seen a lot of discourse and stuff about the moments that we’ve seen, so I’m going to use this ask as an opportunity to weigh in on everything under the cut...

FIRST, CAN I JUST SAY that at the moment that I am writing this post, we are still trending at #5 and we’ve been in the 4-7 range for at least the past, like, IDK, 18-20 hours maybe?! I LOVE THIS FANDOM AND HOW WE LOSE OUR SHIT AT THE SMALLEST THINGS

Okay, so let me go through this thing and comment on the parts, and then give some general thoughts below:

LOVE that this is a promo entirely about the LGBTQIA+ characters and characters of color. Not exactly surprised that they still tried to put as much Rob Lowe in it as possible (that’s Fox/the writers’ M.O. it seems - to squeeze Rob/Owen in whether he fits or not). Some of his comments were a little awkward, I thought (referring to Paul’s trans storyline as “stuff” makes me go 😬), but whatever. He’s not the point of all of this, so that’s the last I’m going to talk about him.

TOMMY VEGA. I AM READY TO STAN. I love Gina Torres, I already love how much heart and soul she is giving just in these quick peeks, I cannot wait to see her in action!

Also let me use this moment to say that while it’s obvious I’m not getting my Grace + Carlos friendship (that’s fine if it stays in fandom, I’ll live), I’m SO GLAD that her and Tommy are gonna be friends! One promo mentioned that Judd has known Tommy before, so it would not surprise me if they’ve been friends for awhile. LOVE THAT.

SPECULATION: This gives me a good time to just throw out a theory that I’ve been thinking about... We know Owen and Gwen are hosting Tommy at their place for a backyard dinner. I assume her husband may be there as well, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Judd and Grace are there too.

I ALSO would not be surprised if this is when one of the nights at Carlos’s place happens, like a parallel of the two dinner parties. That at least keeps every main character involved in both locations. We shall see though.

So this gathering at the firehouse seems like it’s going to be a pretty big scene, probably for episode 1. I think everyone’s gathered so that Owen can announce he’s in remission (we’ll hear him tell TK first, which is the hug that they share earlier in the trailer, I think).

But this gathering also includes a Tommy/Grace moment, a Tarlos moment, the others doing other things kind of moments. It’ll serve the same purpose as a lot of the season 1 bar scenes, and I’m so glad they’ve moved those to the firehouse. I want that place to really start feeling like a home this year.

(I want all of the locations to feel a little more grounded and special, if I’m being honest. Like, I’m SO GLAD that Carlos’s place is going to be a key location this season.)

There are now two instances of Carlos being next to Gwen (standing next to her while Owen makes an announcement and now sitting next to her at the table), so we better get some dialogue between them or I WILL BE SO UPSET. I WANT GWEN TO STAN CARLOS AS MUCH AS I DO.

Someone posted how happy TK is going to be to have a boyfriend who is committed enough to him to be jealous, unlike Alex who didn’t care and cheated on him. I certainly think this could be a great moment for them to establish what this new relationship means for them, and I’m excited to see what they writers have planned.

There is so much speculation surrounding who these two people could be, and I’ve heard some super interesting theories about Carlos’s backstory.

I’m gonna be basic though and stick with the fact that I think they’re his parents.

LOL that was a lot but so was this promo.

Now, some somewhat sobering thoughts...

We all know season 1 had a real diversity and inclusion problem, we’ve seen the numbers. We also know that during the promotion for season 1, we ALSO got a diversity promo focusing on the LGBTQIA+ characters and the characters of color. I love that Fox wants to highlight the incredibly talented actors and characters that they have, but all of it means nothing if they are still tokens on the show.

I have full faith that season 2 will be better, that some of the justified anger and frustration made it back to the writers and they internalized it and then make some real changes. However, because we did get a diversity promo last year, I have to remain a little cautious. This promo doesn’t really mean anything and if, somehow, season 2 goes the way season 1 did, it will be another instance of Fox using the characters of color to draw people in without actually giving them screentime and development. Which is a HUGE PROBLEM. So... I’m very excited and very hopeful, but also slightly wary.

Similarly, I’ve seen people say that they’re worried that, while there is so much Tarlos in this promo, this might be all the Tarlos we get this season. I don’t share the same concern, but like the diversity issue, I understand where that comes from. There was a lot of Tarlos in season 1′s promos and, as we now know, they got screentime in episodes 1-3 and then virtually nothing until episode 10.

I kind of lost track of the filming schedule, but I think before they went on the holiday/extended hiatus, they filmed the first 5-6 episodes? Maybe? And we know that we’re getting 14 total this season, which means it’s possible that they haven’t even filmed half of them.

I think the footage that we got in this promo is from, like, 3 or 4 episodes max. Definitely episodes 1 and 2, maybe 4, possibly 5. The crossover is episode 3 and I am still expecting to barely see Carlos in it - I just think it’s going to be very fire heavy one, especially with the members of the 118 coming in to steal screentime. He could be in one scene, maybe? Idk, I’m just not expecting a lot from that episode.

And sure, we could get a lot of Tarlos at the beginning and then nothing for a whole string of episodes, but that also just doesn’t seem possible with the way they’ve restructured the relationship dynamics. Like, it really does seem like Carlos is going to be a part of the family this year, so I think it will be easier to include him and harder to delete him entirely. (Please let him at least appear in every single episode, I don’t want to be so fucking angry like last year.)

Also, if all of these scenes stay in the episodes, we are getting AT LEAST 4 Tarlos conversations - the firehouse, the wrestling match, the farmer’s market, the flirting by the truck - and other scenes of them being in the same space as part of a group. I’m sure there will be even more that we’re just not seeing. I’m very optimistic for this season and for the Tarlos content, and I really don’t think we’ll see the front-loaded imbalance that we saw last season. I think when they get back to filming the later episodes, there will be a good amount of Tarlos content in those, too!

I will say, though, that I am worried we’ve just seen the only kiss that they’ll share in the first 5 or so episodes. I’m just so used to network TV placing a limit on gay kisses, and Idk how much that has really changed in recent years. I truly love this kiss, and I hope there are more, but I would not be surprised if we end the season having only gotten like 2-3. (PLEASE LET ME BE WRONG.)

Am I the only one genuinely surprised and a little impressed by Niall's move with Nice To Meet Ya? A pivot from a blatant Fleetwood Mac throwback to late 90s dance-rock should provoke whiplash, but it's striking how well Niall sticks the landing - the minor key piano line riding the firm bass groove into the blown-out storm of guitars that still sounds well-balanced and produced, it's inspired comparisons to U2's 90s run, although what it reminds me more with the effortless vocal charisma and traces of elegance is someone like Robbie Williams. Hell, it might even be better given how much Niall doesn't oversell this song, trying to lean into the hope of preserving some connection with this girl before she takes off after the night, and he's suave enough to pull that off. Of course, the big question is whether this'll actually last, given the throwback is to a sound of the late 90s that I actually haven't seen much attention given - I'd say the closest parallel to this era is The 1975's People and even that's playing to a very different vibe in retro dance rock - but I kind of hope it does, because it kicks ass! Great song.

I finished 5x8. I HATED Deb comparing Mickey to Frank. (Though I'm not sure how I haven't seen gifs of Mickey's naked guitar playing. 😍) I wonder though, do you think Ian would have flushed his meds if Mickey had shown up sooner? He seemed pretty upset that he thought Mickey was leaving him, which honestly surprised me. And do you think Deb was the reason Mickey came back? I feel like he was maybe trying to stay away but it was only gonna take something small to drag him back.

The only reason I don’t mind Debbie making this point is because it was the start to that pattern Frank and Monica have (she comes back manic, they fight or shit hits the fan in some way, Frank drinks and swears himself off her, she ditches, he tries to drink her away, she comes back and comes back to her; rinse, repeat).

It was more of a warning than a full-out comparison, I think, because she simply noticed a connection and wanted to warn that this was the road he was headed down. This wasn’t yet their pattern, but it could have been the start of one. Mickey, I think, started off as a parallel to Frank because he fought for Ian’s right to remain unmedicated though everyone else wanted him medicated. Him telling Ian he was going to the hospital whether he liked it or not before he ran away was Mickey already breaking that pattern; Then he gives Ian that reassurance he needed to admit himself, then when he comes back to Ian, sober, and apologizes for ditching, and then he took Ian to the clinic to get his meds and made it a huge priority for Ian to get used to the meds and to find the most comfortable way to acclimate him to the new lifestyle. Mickey has proved over and over that he is not Frank and though it was actually the writers’ intent to connect them, I think what ended up happening was Mickey became a foil, an opposite of Frank in many ways.

Now, if Ian would have flushed them had Mickey been there… I’m going to go with no because Mickey would have kept a closer eye on him than Debbie did. Mickey would have sat in that bedroom with him all day if he had gone to pick him up. That’s not to say that Ian wouldn’t try to do something rash or try to fight Mickey on it maybe even playing to his conscience (”If you love me you won’t make me take them,” something like that).

I do think that Debbie helped Mickey recognize that dangerous pattern emerging. The last thing Mickey, or anyone, wants is to become like Frank. He was absolutely ready to break from the Gallaghers because that visit to the hospital freaked him out so bad, and you could see how upset seeing Ian while sedated made him. And I think in that moment, Mickey didn’t think he could handle it (and I don’t blame him, mental illness can be a tricky bitch to be around and witness, much less experience; so for someone who has absolutely no experience with mental illness to see the love of his life look at him like he doesn’t feel anything towards him and bail out on a visit because he’s tired? I can’t imagine how painful that must be when he had absolutely no idea what to expect). I think Mickey was trying to make a clean break because he didn’t think he could handle it, so he got drunk because that was the only way he knew not to feel anything (I mean, the poor boy wanted CRACK! This guy wanted some SERIOUS escape!) So I think it took Debbie pointing out that parallel for him to say “oh, hell no! We are not Frank and Monica!” and sober up to come back to be there for his man. I do think he would have come back eventually, but without Debbie pointing out that relationship, I fear that pattern may have emerged and would have been harder to recognize/avoid in the future.
