Can I just tell you I love your Hobbit comic anyway, but the illustration when Bilbo explains that he isn't married for reasons he can't articulate almost made me cry

Ahhh thank you so much!! ❤️♥️❤️😭😭 🫂<3 This was a page I labored over for a while because it’s a line that’s important to me, and i was really hoping other people would connect with it. I remember reading that Gandalf quote in the Unfinished Tales/The Quest of Erebor for the first time and feeling like “””“!!!!??!?!?!?????!!!!!!!!”””

And now I found that [Bilbo] was 'unattached' (…)I learned that he had never married. I thought that odd though I guessed why it was; and the reason that I guessed was not that most of the Hobbits gave me: that he had early been left very well off and his own master. No, I guessed that he wanted to remain 'unattached' for some reason deep down which he did not understand himself - or would not acknowledge, for it alarmed him.

A lot of the way Tolkien reframes Bilbo’s story in later works like LOTR and the Unfinished Tales are fascinating to me, but I love this line in particular. It’s the queer metaphor of it all— the pain of not understanding yourself but also being terrified of the introspection it would take to fully understand yourself, and so avoiding that introspection by attempting to repress it and put it off indefinitely…

January OTP Prompts

Maybe I was wrong, maybe it's not easier to write these in the morning. Maybe I'm just getting burnt out on them? Who knows, BUT we got today done and we are almost done with the month and I am going to be so ridiculously proud of myself for sticking with it when it's through! Thank you so much again to everyone who has been reading and so supportive. I truly didn't think anyone was going to give these any thought except for myself so thank you so much again!!

18. Wind

Matty was like a flower, leaning back with his head tilted towards the sun, letting it beat down on his face, warming his body, a content smile curling across his lips, his curls billowing around him, framing his features in the wind. The bridge of his nose was starting to look a little pink, as were his shoulders and George knew he should get up, should make his way across the boat they had chartered for their day off, and remind him to reapply sunscreen. But for the moment, George stayed seated, admiring him from afar.

Matty’s hair was getting longer these days, long enough that he complained he was too old for this and needed to get it cut, the curls streaked with gray. The complaints always stalled, at least for a few days, when George dug his fingers into the tangle and pulled. Now, he looked like a woman in a shampoo commercial, his curls wild and windblown. George smiled to himself, knowing that Matty’s eyes were bright behind his sunglasses.

“What are you staring at, weirdo,” Matty called over the roar of the wind as their charter captain guided the boat over the water. A cheeky grin now playing across features, George shrugged, not caring that he had been caught staring.

“You,” George called back sweetly and Matty blushed, his cheeks darkening to match the pink blooming across his nose.

Ross, who was sitting next to him, sipping from a beer, pretended to gag. George just rolled his eyes. Even after ten years together, they had never truly left the honeymoon stage. If you asked George, why should they have moved past it? He loved Matty, always had, and alway would. Just because they had been together for years, doesn’t mean that his presence wasn’t going to make his insides melt.

George got up, and carefully made his way across the boat to where Matty was sitting, holding onto the seats lining the perimeter of the boat for support.

“Hey,” he said, plopping down next to him, the wind instantly blowing Matty’s curls into George’s face, causing him to laugh even as he got a mouth full of hair. Matty shifted his weight, angling his body so the wind was now blowing his hair off his face and away from George.

“Hey,” Matty said, looking up at George over the tops of his sunglasses, what George knew was supposed to come across as seductively, but had Matty bursting into giggles a moment later, ruining the effect.

“You’re getting burnt,” said George, reaching under the seat to retrieve the backpack he had stashed at the start of the trip, to pull out a bottle of sunscreen and holding it up.

Matty frowned, disliking the sticky lotion, but hating being burnt more.

“Thanks,” he said, louder than he normally would have spoken to be heard over the wind.

“Of course,” said George, and Matty twisted, allowing George to rub the thick lotion into his already tender skin. George winced, they should have reapplied sooner.

Matty shifted again, looking back up at George thoughtfully. George couldn’t resist; he reached out, and dabbed a dollop of sunscreen onto Matty’s nose, causing him to gasp in surprise. George laughed and pulled Matty, sticky and windblown, into his side, while Matty rubbed at his nose, trying desperately to work the thick, cold lotion into his face.

“I love you,” said George.

Matty chuckled, his nose wrinkled from the sunscreen but he pressed himself against George anyway. “I love you too.”

Urwis is finally feeling a bit better and walking around and interacting with us. he's still in a lot of pain but he handles taking painkillers much better and doesn't freak out at the sight of the antibiotic. even though he doesn't want to cuddle (and smells like medicine and hospital) I think we're doing good and we're close to things getting okay again
