Basic Biology | Robin Buckley x Reader
Tumblr media
Masterlist | R.B Masterlist
Words: 0.5k
Summary: You're on the outside looking in, knowing Robin will never like you back the way you want her to.
✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧
Your eyes met hers as they did in every biology class. The same people had occupied the same seats since Freshman year, your teacher hated things changing his classroom so, if he had the same class then he would keep everyone in the same seats. Your biology class remained under his care in Biology through all of your years in High School, up to your senior year. Everyone else found it infuriating, some people sitting next to people they hated, some people dated their desk partners and broke up, some just not being anywhere near their friends. But you were content with this arrangement.
It had allowed you to be sat directly across the classroom from Robin, right in eyeshot, her facing the left side of the class, you facing the right. You had considered Robin a school friend, and you hoped she did too. There were no after-school hangouts, or even the potential for any, as it wasn’t the nature of your relationship. She had her friends, and you had yours.
Now this arrangement you weren’t too happy with. She was just… everything. Both with the shared love of playing a musical instrument, you were in the band club with her, which is what sparked the school friendship. You spent a lot of afternoons together, you were the duo who chatted about things that interest you in the corner of the room, and it would always come back to music. It was common ground that you had hoped to build on. Unfortunately, someone got in the way of your building preparations, and placed her own foundations down before you even got the chance.
Vickie.
Vickie had caught Robin’s attention when she joined band club, months after you and Robin did. Now it was no longer you making her laugh, it was no longer you who she gave a smile to welcome you into the room, inviting you to sit with her as you waited for the teacher to arrive.
She was everything… you were nothing.
Pushed to the sidelines of a friendship that probably wasn’t even considered a friendship by Robin, you were forced to watch as the foundations that you wanted to build got taller and taller every day. But they weren’t built by you.
You were simply a ghost, someone who wanted to be something more. But who were you kidding? Robin deserved Vickie, someone who she could have a conversation with without any awkwardness seeping off from you. Along with your other friends, you had seen Robin as one. But she didn’t even see you. But you saw her, the way her eyes would crinkle when she was happy, how she would play with her rings when anxious, the doodles she would create on her shoes when she was bored.
Her eyes would look at yours in the Biology classroom, and for a moment you thought that she could finally see you, but reality would soon give its bittersweet smile as her eyes moved past you and to Vickie who was two seats down from you.
She didn’t see you, she saw Vickie.
Despite knowing this, despite having your answer, your palms still sweated, your heart rate still elevated, and butterflies tormented your stomach whenever she looked over, even if her final destination was Vickie. Because after all, it’s just the basic biology of looking at someone you love.

How would a female near, mello, and Matt be in your opinion? Would it affect the story?
oh. my. GOD. you have opened the pandoras box rn.
so tbh ive never thought about this before u sent me this ask but god do I have some stuff to say now that I’ve given it a little tinker
obviously this will be deeply rooted in my own belief system and personal experiences bc it’s undeniably connected to gender stereotypes and nature vs nurture
Prepare for a literal essay rn. Proper punctuation and capitalisation n shit.
To start, I wanna mention that my belief is that men and women don’t differ that much in behaviours and personalities inherently or biologically, but they’re raised based on stereotypes and assumptions which forms them into individuals that are either more masculine or feminine (behaviourally, so stereotypically). This is not including the slight biological differences that testosterone vs estrogen might cause, as i do not have much knowledge on the specifics (sorry I hate biology…) and obviously some people can be born with an innate tendency towards stereotypical masculinity or femininity in their personality.
This will require me to make some assumptions regarding how old Matt, Mello and Near were when they joined Wammy’s house. Also, obviously, this analysis will be based on if they were raised as cisgendered females; this is really important to analyse how their personalities could differ based on their experiences.
So let’s assume: they all joined Wammy’s House at a young enough age to have no real recollection of their biological families. This means that their guardians’ parenting styles had no real effect on their personalities (at least no effect on their typically gendered characteristics). This also makes it easier as we have a little bit of insight into what Wammy’s could be like in the context of parenting, while we have none on the biological families. This will still pretty much be a guessing game, but at least the guesses will be somewhat calculated.
Now we could be optimistic and claim that Wammy’s is “above” gender stereotypes and the (often unconscious) differences in raising girls vs boys. As much as I would love to believe this, I feel like the story being set in the early 2000s already negates it. I am a strong believer of the fact that society and your general environment greatly affect you, no matter how hard you try to break free of the mould. There will always be internalised beliefs and tendencies for certain actions caused by your environment that are just beyond your control, and they are often unconscious. Trying to change ones biases is hard work and a long process demanding self awareness and dedication.
Roger and Wammy are old men; as much as I’d love them to be allies💅 that don’t let gender affect their decisions and behaviour towards people, I do think the bias is inherently there to some extent. They wouldn’t decide against a girl being L’s successor simply because she’s a girl - they’re above that - but I do think as girls, Matt, Mello and Near could have a tougher time at the orphanage.
Ok moving on to specifically how/why it could affect their personalities. (god this is getting so long already I am so sorry)
Mello
We all know Mello has a super fiery personality and is filled with determination, so this one is the most fun to think about for me!!!
Most importantly, her looks would be very feminine. She’d love fashion, love skirts and dresses, and be stereotypical in that context, but would be VERY PROUD OF IT!!! EXCEPT. Her personality is canonically extremely contrasting to her looks/style. She’d get in so much more trouble at Wammy’s for being loud and bullying others, because it would just be more shocking for the teachers to see a girl act that way rather than a boy. There would be no concessions. No getting out of any smallest bit of trouble just because “boys will be boys”. But this wouldn’t make her timid; it was bound to fuel her anger even more.
It was infuriating to her when people saw a "girl in a leather mini skirt", and on account of that she wasn’t taken seriously in the pursuit of her goals. But when she acted up, all eyes were on her, and the punishment was always dire.
This also brings me to the fact that getting into the mafia was NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. Nobody took this teenaged girl in stilettos seriously, so she had to improvise. Mello as a girl would have had to be far more ruthless in her journey trying to join the mob. Crueler. Angrier. Scare people by drastic means and desperate measures into finally taking her seriously and seeing her as worthy of respect. I think female Mello would have had much more blood on her hands, and would have been really scary...
I also think Mello would be a radical feminist. She would eventually HATE MEN as a whole, as she’d get objectified SO MUCH in the mafia. She’d just be completely done with their shit, so much so, that she would just channel her anger at an entire gender bc she was just fed. up. (and probably a little traumatised)
Her most hated phrase is “that’s not ladylike”. She values her femininity very much, and hates when people use empty stereotypes to belittle it. She can scream her head off at Near and still be a Lady!
Near
Studies show that autism is only diagnosed at a 4:1 boys to girls ratio, which means that if Near were a girl, she may not have had the access to as many accomodations. She’d still be supported in many ways, but it could be done hesitantly. Her timid behaviour and hobbies could be seen as “feminine”, meaning that if she’d ask for accomodations, the necessity for them could be doubted. (I know Wammy’s probably doesn’t officially diagnose, but Near imo desperately needs accomodations to simply function) (also, this section is very much so an “if” in my mind; it could happen depending on the level of unconscious prejudice in the orphanage, but it’s extremely dependent on the staff).
I don’t think Near being a cis girl would really affect the plot, though. I genuinely believe Near’s character transcends gender a bit, maybe he’s immune to the influence of different methods of parenting? He’s just himself and doesn’t care if people tell him he should “go out and play” or “just be a boy”.
Matt
We know the least about Matt’s canon personality, so this will mostly be based on what I believe him to be like. We know that he doesn’t care about much, and he likes games.
I think Matt is the most “boyish” of our Wammy boys, so in my mind, as a girl, she’d be quite the tomboy. Her personality wouldn’t be that much different. She could have been force fed more “girly hobbies” rather than gaming (not sure if he picked up gaming himself, or if someone introduced him to it). If he was in fact introduced by someone to video games, I believe that as a girl, she could have been shown different hobbies that are more traditionally feminine instead. Or maybe just a different game, like the sims? (the sims 1 came out in 2000 so could happen) then she could branch out into different games herself.
IT is also a very masculine interest in people’s eyes, so when she found an interest for it, she may have been slightly discouraged by teachers, but that didn't stop her, and as soon as she started being decent at it, the teachers respected it.
I do feel like as a girl, the one thing that would definitely change in Matt is his attitude. She would simply care more, as she’d spent her childhood fighting wearing skirts, fighting for her hobbies and trying to run from stereotypical femininity.
She wouldn't be particularly furious at the world, more irritated, so she wouldn't chew someone out for telling her to wear a dress for an assembly - she'd just flat out refuse wearing it and ignore anyone who'd try to persuade her.
She didn't understand why everyone is so insistent on a girl having long hair or wearing make up, and it made her feel like she couldn't be herself. She always wanted to feel like a girl, but kept feeling like it was against the rules without looking feminine. She spent a long time feeling out of place, alienated and desperately wanting to be part of a community.
Once she got comfortable with herself, I feel like she'd constantly pick up typically boyish hobbies to piss people off. (But she would genuinely enjoy them too of course!!) (and be entertained by people getting mad at stupid and pointless shit like a girl being into cars)
ok jesus i spent hours on this. it’s 1400 words. i dont know how i managed this. i struggle to write 500 word essays for uni……i am normal about death note i am normal about death note i am normal about death note 🙏 ummmm enjoy? and please let me know what you guys think!!!

Collision, Family, Volcano, Crown, Ruler and Fire for Izzy! (Her character has such a cool concept yet there is so little about her character in this fandom i need more of her,,,,)
Hey!! Thank you for asking! And also your ask made me want to finally do another quick doodle of her x)
Tumblr media
Baby boy. Baby. vs Evil
(Asks from this ( x ) meme)
💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with? 🌋 VOLCANO - how bad is their temper? is it a slow boil, or a instant explosion?
I am combining these questions because the answers to both are quite connected, hope this is okay!
Izzy will go feral, figurally and literally, when someone either threatens people she is willing to protect or knows which regrets of hers to turn outside. Although she thinks reasonably and tries her best to have a grasp on her impulses and "be an animal responsibly!", she unfortunately is vulnerable to provocation. You know that one smug asshole that simply knows all of your insecurities and will lead you in public (friends or families) so they could humiliate you or dig through your dirt? ...no? Well, it is the worst kind of parental/authority figure, and Izzy is likely to see red and even physically attack a person like this. If she is around someone who knows how to get under her skin, she needs a more collected friend to ground her and remind her this is not worth her passion and anger.
Conclusion: slow boil, unless you pull the right strings! He can pile up grudges and anger- heck, it took a while for Izzy to "explode" at Ludwig with telling him in exact detail how much of a dumbass he was fhfhdsfd Yet on the other hand, Ashton (a crucial OC for the story) infuriated Izzy upon like, second significant interaction!
👪 FAMILY - what is their family like? what is your ocs relationship to them? does your oc have any siblings?
I envisioned her as the only child and someone growing without mom, raised just by father who was also quite harsh on her. A hell lot of emotional problems that never got resolved, just piling up over the years. She never tried to earn her dad's approval, nor strongly rebelled against him, but simply tried to coexist with little to no trust to the irrational fool that never knew what did he want.
The father had plenty of siblings on the other hand, so Izzy got to see various uncles, aunts and cousins often! With most of them Izzy was friendly and they felt more like a family than his dad, but still it was a little soured since for them her dad was the best person even with no flaw whatsoever and in her kid and teens she lacked the nerve to ruin the good picture. Izzy stopped writing any letters to her father or cousins from Yharnam in the end. There were just too many absolutely batshit things happening that letters would not cover, but he didn't want to bother with 'fake' and shallow letters either.
👑 CROWN - what does your oc want to be remembered as? why?
Izzy simply wanted to have his place amongst other significant people in Yharnam, whether it'd be as a great hunter or as a significant researcher! In a way, this wish came true.. you know, discovering a whole new philosophy in all that... mess of Kin, Beasts and humans, that STILL (!!!) has people like Josef diving into Loran dungeons to get at least close to the revelation about beasthood Izzy found? Izzy died as a monster, not knowing her legacy would live on beyond cursing Yamamura's homeland with beasthood, but she'd be very content to know she left the potential of "better humankind" open :')
📏 RULER - is your oc well educated? where did they get their learning from?
Izzy is actually well-versed in subjects like math, history, chemistry and biology! She knows a lot of literature and art too, it is just not a forefront and only brought up accidentally, when she tries to recite a poem that no one recognises. Doesn't help that her manner of talking is really "simple" for the lack of better term, and her education is only obvious when she IS discussing the topic! I always joke that she is a jock+nerd hybrid xD
She went the self-taught road as soon as she gained enough maturity to understand the teachers at the school tended to abuse their authority and the educational system itself was sketchy and with propaganda of certain ideas baked in it! If they wanted to overreact at her reasonable curiosity, then whatever! Calling them out on their bullshit and doing her own thing at the library it is, then! Because of how she studied everything "unofficially" she never had any certificate for her rich knowledge. But out of all Hunters visiting Byrgenwerth, only Izzy took a whole room to conduct researches, not to mention giving good lectures..... until Willem finally walked in and shooed her with a broom fdhfdjdsd
🔥 FIRE - do they have any self destructive tendencies? what habits do they have that hinder them from becoming their best self?
If you count self-inflicted beastly evolution and accelerating Vermin she got inside herself to properly become a part of her blood as self-destruction, then I guess so xD But in her defence, her choice of path to evolution preserved the humanity in its true nature the best!! Filth of humanity is not something to "cleanse" but something to cherish and protect from Great Ones who abuse it!
I'd say a flaw that guarantees his "failures" is inability to control the way arrogance grows as soon as his ideological enemies are marked. Izzy gets commentaries on being too stubborn from friends often, even when he is objectively right! She is actually quite similar to Laurence with the whole "I know what's best for humanity!".. Izzy is actually a strong competition to Mico in terms of being Laurence's rival: they both have these grand plans, whereas Micolash largerly doesn't care about humanity and sees most as cattle. But God FORBID you TELL Izzy this fhdhfdshds
Also:
Tumblr media
I want to present.. the sequel
Izzy: Unlike you fanatics I am able to listen to the ideas that contradict mine without losing my shit uwu
Caryll: Embracing beasthood is not the rebellion against the vicious cycle of Moon Presence that you think it is but a truthful part of her plan same as Star Kin that receive redemption from her, the only way to win is to not play.
Izzy:
Tumblr media
Ok ok I am done now fhhdshfdhf Thank you for the ask again!!

One of the editing associations I'm part of just sent me a job listing that is.. Extremely transphobic.
(To be clear, all job listings are emailed to me automatically so this isn't like they sent this to me personally, but anyway—)
This person is writing a dystopian ScFi novel that aims to show a dystopian end to the "Gender Wars" and "Transgenderism". She says she is someone who has detransitioned and wants to critique the transgender community from a place of "love and concern", then goes straight into saying that she is pro-biology and doesn't agree with the "transgender ideology" (but she bears no ill will to transgender people!!). She wants an editor who is invested in "free speech".
And this absolutely infuriates me. I want to email the association like "hey I'm concerned about this job listing", but I also know that to anyone not well-versed in transphobic and TERF dog-whistles that this kind of thing does sound genuinely well-intentioned. The fact that this person has made of point of saying she's an AuDHD-er and Jewish feels like she's playing the "I can't be bigoted, I'm marginalised too!" card, and I'm worried that her stress on Free Speech™ means that if I then email the job list manager, I'll look like the bad guy.
But it is a stark reminder of how easy it is for transphobia to grow. Of the way that raging bigotry can be carefully couched in terms of genuine kindness and concern, and so slip past anti-hate speech rules. It's genuinely frightening.

ABYSS - Epilogue 1
Author: Akira
Characters: Kanata, Madara
Translator: Mika Enstars
"Which means, Mikejima was depending on me."
Season: Winter
Location: Seaside
Tumblr media
Present time. Shortly after collecting the urn (?) from the Marine Biology Clubroom…
Kanata: Puka, puka.
Haah~… It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to “soak in water”.
Madara: Heeey~, Kanata-san~! ♪
Sorry to keep you waiting! I’ve successfully completed the mission! ♪ I’ve recovered the problem item in question properly, seeee?
Kanata: Is that so~? Fufufu, Mikejima can do anything.
Madara: About anyone can achieve this child-level of errand. I reaaally feel that your evaluation of me has completely declined.
In the past, you used to be so adorable and dependent on me, all “Mikejima, Mikejima! ♪”
Kanata: You’re wrong~, it was the other way around~. Mikejima was the one protecting his “pride” by taking “care” of me, wasn’t he?
Tumblr media
Kanata: Which means, Mikejima was depending on me.
Madara: You’ve become good at using your words. Infuriating.
…Guess that means we’re not kids anymore, huuuh?
Kanata: Yes. It’s because I’ve “matured” since then that I've come to understand certain things.
—“Abyss” never “actually” existed in the first place.
Madara: Mhm. I’d been curiously looking into it since then, so I have some idea about what went on.
It was meant to be classified, but that religious group has since disbanded.
Document preservation has become somewhat of a mess, and those who were involved are becoming more talkative now that they don’t have a god to justify their actions to. To a certain extent.
So, we’ve finally got the answer to our long awaited question.
Kanata: Yes. Everything was a “scheme” arranged by the “adults”.
—First of all, God had died.
In other words, my mother.
But. That too, was a “lie”.
Madara: Probably. By your mother faking her death, and going missing. But I really haven’t been able to pursue her, I have no idea where she’d be now, though.
Honestly speaking, it’s not clear if she’s even alive.
Tumblr media
Kanata: She’s still alive. Probably. I can feel it.
When I touch the “sea” like this, I feel Mother.
Madara: That’s unusually god-like of you to say.
Kanata: Please don’t make fun of me. That’s a bad habit of yours, Mikejima.
That time, when I was about to be “kidnapped”…
I was tied up and couldn’t move, and I had to have my eyes “covered”, so I barely knew what was happening.
While I was so scared I shut my “eyes” and had nearly “fainted”—It felt like I was being “held” in someone’s arms the entire time.
Maybe, that was Mother. That warm feeling.
Madara: I suppose there is the possibility… Your mom officially stepped down from the place of god by faking her own death. Though I don’t really know what the motive was, nor does it matter.
Perhaps she grew exhausted of reigning as god in a human form, or something like that.
Or maybe there was an even more incomprehensible reason, one that others cannot relate to.
It doesn’t matter to us anymore. Your mother abandoned her believers who worshiped her as a god, her religion, and even her very own child, and went off on her own.
She’s not qualified to be a mother.
I have no obligation to call someone so awful at being a human being a mother.
Tumblr media
Kanata: It was unavoidable. Mother was a “god” for much longer than I had been.
It’s no wonder she has insufficient “experience” as a human being.
It is lonely though. Even now, I still do miss her a little.
But… I’m no longer a “child” searching for his mother. There are many warm people all around me now, aren’t there?
There is no “need” to be lonely anymore, not even a little bit.
Besides, Mother didn’t actually want to abandon me, didn’t she? At first, I had been kidnapped to be taken along with her.
But, she changed her mind, and she stopped.
Why do you think that is, Mikejima?

Hello shippers & readers!
With the advent of autumn blustering in under some heat waves, we wanted to zero in on a particular subculture genre this fandom gets a craving for now and then and that is vampires. We solicited our members for the toothy, bloody, sexy nomination they'd most love to read and discuss together and the vote results were in: we chose wait by the light of the moon by drunkkenobi
Aside from scratching the vampire lore itch with a premise that had us shaking with the uncappable potential of what this Ryan would do to keep Shane alive, this fic gives us werewolves and another thing we needed deeply and that is Ryan and Shane as gay women, which helped us to enthusiastically examine our relationships with monsters in media and people socialized as women.
Rating: Explicit
Summary:
“This isn’t a bit!” Color finally returned to Ryan’s face with a brilliant flourish. “You are so infuriating. That is blood because you’re a vampire now and if you don’t drink it, you’ll die.”
“And why should I believe any of that?”
Ryan took a deep breath as she shook out her shoulders. “Because I’m a werewolf.”
Book Club Thoughts
Ryan's boobs and the sudden panic of realizing you nearly died: what a fic!
[The author's] prose feels incredibly natural. It's great writing that evokes emotion and always makes it clear where the characters' heads are at without feeling overwritten to show off
There’s a real person rhythm to [the dialogue] that i love very much and that comes through so easily when the fic is read aloud
I have made it absolutely zero secret that I am in love with the medium of vampires and while monsterfucking can be its own animal, if you will; I feel like [the author] touched on a very specific part of the vampire genre that I love the most. It's the sharing in a secret and honestly, loving the monster skin you're in
happy endings are so much more satisfying if they're earned and the characters had to grow to get there. and this WAS THAT.
I have to say, unrelated to the above, but god the smut is smokin’. I’m not often like, blushing when i read smut but somethin’ about fem!shyan really did it for me
The humour in this fic was just SUPERB and i liked how Shane’s voice and humour was present in the exposition and description too
god if ryan was a girl she would be such a menace
another of my favourite things about vampire fic is the biology and the retractable fangs in this one and moreover that they just burst out when she's in the throes of her thirst. Gorgeous
i think [the author] really perfectly encaptured what they'd be like as cis girls in a way that was very believable, i loved their family dynamics, i love supernatural creatures having to live mundane lives and go to work, i loved ryans tits, the biting kink, the period sex
I also just. Am obsessed with fics where vampires learn how to be vampires. It's esp so funny to imagine Shane dealing with that and all the innate Shane-ness

Ranking my teachers' responses to me asking them to address me by my chosen name or my last name
English [8/10]
She was the first teacher i felt comfortable enough around to ask her so she gets bonus points for that.
She did slip up quite a bit in the beginning (one thing to note is that that was my first year at that school so they couldn't have been that used to my deadname) but made an effort and i appreciate that.
By now she consistently calls me by my chosen name but often slips up with pronouns.
Physics [6.5/10]
Her first response was something along the lines of "i'm curious as to why but that's your business i guess".
She doesn't call me by my chosen name but usually remembers to use my last name (i'm the only one in my class she doesn't call by their first name).
When she does happen to slip up and call me by my deadname she sometimes ignores me correcting her and proceeds to use my deadname in the next sentence without batting an eye
German [7/10]
She refuses to call me by my chosen name not because of transphobia but because she just hates my choice of name?? She pretty much said "i wouldn't call anyone that name" because she thinks it's ugly?? I mean i believe her cause she's the kind of person to do that but what??
She now calls me by my last name (again i'm the only one she doesn't call by their first name) with very few slip ups.
History [7.5/10]
With this one i'm not sure 'cause he doesn't call me by name often. I made the request at the end of the last school year so it wasn't a surprise that he'd forgotten by the beginning of this one but i'm pretty sure he uses my last name or chosen name now.
His first response to me was that he'd try to remember that and he added that he had "nothing against people like [me] by the way" so that's good?
First language/literature/class teacher [3/10]
I wasn't there when she said that but apparently she'd told my friends that she'd call me by my chosen name once i've legally changed it 🙄
When i asked her to at least call me by my last name she was hesitant because "i usually only call only boys by their last name" (i'm a trans guy...) (that's not even true she calls some girls in our class by their last name too) but she mostly uses my last name instead of my deadname by now. She does use my deadname when she thinks i'm not paying attention though which is lowkey infuriating.
Russian [7/10]
I was surprised when she went "okay" and wrote down my chosen name with no fuss cause she seems like a very traditional person. I told her she could also use my last name and she said that she would then have to call me Miss [last name]?? Like who's forcing her to do that?? But okay i guess
She hasn't used my chosen name but at least she calls me by my last name without the miss.
Maths [10/10]
I love her. I never talked to her about my name 'cause she usually doesn't call us by our names in class but apparently she heard about it and one day casually mentioned that i can write my chosen name on the test without me even asking her.
When she does call me by my name she again uses my chosen name without even mentioning it and that's so nice of her <33
PE [7/10]
She's also one i didn't talk to about my name but who heard about it somewhere herself. For a while she just used both names at the same time ("[chosen name] [deadname] come over here") for some reason but she asked me which one i preffered for her to use at the beginning of this school year(!!)
She uses my chosen name when she absolutely has to but most of the time just awkwardly points at me.
Honorary mentions:
My art history and music teachers, who just don't care what our names are
My biology teacher who calls us all by our last names like a proffessional King
My new literature teacher who i introduced myself by my chosen name to and impressed enough with my knowledge of Carmen that she liked me enough to call me by any name i wanted

Fic authors self-rec! ✨ When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you’ve written, then pass on to at least five other writers (if you would like to)!
Thanks for the tag @fatefulfaerie and @tired-twili!
In the Field With the Silent Princess: They finally defeated Ganon… but at what cost?
A Lifetime Ago: Her smile wilted. “You’re not my Link, though.” He froze. “You noticed.”
Turn of the Century: All Zelda ever really wanted was to get her degree in Biology while refusing to have a crush on that infuriating fencer. But when you discover that the incarnation of darkness itself is going to reincarnate soon, and that apparently your mother's line had holy sealing powers from the Goddess, things change. At least, they do if you want to live until the end of this year. And Zelda certainly does. [DISCLAIMER: only the first chapter is published and the story is slowly going to get to this point. Slowly because I'm slow at writing it.]
You Are Mine: Link has gotten sidetracked, forgetting his mission. So he tries to repent of it.
A Matter of No Small Importance: Link saw the Princess, looking down at him from where she was standing, every inch of her posture perfect, not a line of her expression untoward. Every inch the perfect Princess fulfilling her duties. Except for her eyes that betrayed her, looking at him, or rather the sword strapped to his back, in the look that any child would have as they complain that it isn’t fair. And he couldn’t blame her.
I tried to do a variety of some of my favorite things I've done in fics, bittersweet and silly and just exploring some themes I like.
As for tags, no pressure, I'm just doing some people I haven't seen do this yet: @dawn-the-rithmatist @jenseits-der-sterne @bluemoon042 and... um, anyone else, I guess.

I like the use of "Watering their dogs or their Maui" that accidently likens him to a pet because it is absolutely a correct statement, he's very catlike (And spider like, ironically)
Ding Ding Ding! He was indeed named after his mother! She basically wanted a mini her and was infuriated when Maui was, surprise, not a mini her.
"We've all been there" No??? Quil, are you just losing limbs on the regular??? My good lad I think you are mistaking your lizard biology for something your every day Joe goes through
And those vine tattoos were for the deer fairy version exclusively, his regular tattoos can be seen on the playboy art that I did of him
And no he is incredibly mentally unstable, like Jinx from Arcane amount of unstable. He desperately needs a therapist
-Heathen
I just. Something about watering a living thing that is not a plant sounds so wrong to me I cannot get over it. I know I already said it but also ???? to me watering something is pouring water on it so I'm getting the mental image of pouring water on Maui right now. Though if he's catlike he probably won't like that
I was trying to remember how much spiders like water and my brain instead was like. Spiders. Water. Spiders in the water. Spiders in the toiler. There's water in the toilet. Is Maui getting flushed down the toilet for his Spider Crimes?
Hooray!! I correctly put together two probably obvious pieces of a puzzle that wasn't actually a puzzle!! But yeah oof wanting a mini you is not a great parenting technique and sounds like an absolutely horrendous mindset to start raising a kid in. My condolences to Maui
Am I loosing limbs on the regular? that's such an interesting and provocative and deep questions I just. I don't know how to answer that. You've really just..touched on something extraordinary there--next question please!!
OOOO you changed the tattoos okay that makes sense. I knew I'd seen the vine tattoos but also you'd said that was an au version of him or something. I guess I assumed that you kept the tattoos ubiquitous across various iterations of his character, but this makes more sense!
Also oh no. You've mentioned he's unstable but Jinx level...hmm that is. That's intense. Maui is in desperate need of help and therapy like immediately. Hopefully he doesn't end up killing his father figure in attempts to protect and help the people he cares about not once, but twice! But then again this is Maui who knows what he's capable of.
I think I understand him better now though, even if it's accompanied by a significant amount of concern for his well being

Study Buddies | Robin Buckley x Female Reader

Words: 2.8k
Summary: You and Robin are always left out in group projects, getting stuck with people who do no work, until your first biology class of senior year.
✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧:・゚✧
Friend groups of three people suck. Your friends also kinda sucked but that is neither here nor there. You had always heard about the 'dangers' of three-person friend groups, there are always two who are better friends than they are with the third, meaning that one person is left out most of the time. You just so happened to be that third person. It was infuriating whenever your teachers would assign group projects of two people, because your friends always sent you a faux-apologetic look before walking off to grab their materials, leaving you scrambling to find a partner.
Multiple times you had suggested that you could all take it in turns with partnering during projects so that you all had equal chances to be with a friend during them, but they had turned you down all too many times with that suggestion, so you were always shoved out of the group.
Looking around the classroom to try and find someone to partner up with was hell. There were always the few popular types who gave you judgemental side looks when you wandered around the classroom checking to see if there was anyone available, and it made you want to throw a chair at their faces. For the most part, the only ones available were the people you knew weren't going to put in any effort with the work, leaving you with all of the main tasks and yet still getting grades.
You would need four hands to be able to count the number of times you had been stuck with doing at least 90% of the work with these projects. In your junior year, you had asked your classmate, Rob, to be your partner as he seemed to be the only one without one too. It was one of the worst mistakes of your life.
He spent the whole time flirting with you, and when you eventually went to his house to finalise the project the day before it was due he tried to make a move. When you declined and started immediately packing up to go home in a frantic state, saying you would just finish it on your own, he started having a go at you for leading him on. You already didn't swing that way but he made sure you definitely definitely didn't swing that way.
Group projects sucked.
Now at the start of your senior year, you were having the same issue on day one. Mrs Simmons had given you a biology group project on genetic mutations in her first class of the year, earning a series of groans from every student in the classroom. Summer was definitely over. Knowing that you were going to see your two friends already talking about how they would go about the project, you didn't even bother looking over to them to double-check like you normally do.
Looking around the class, you started frowning. Due to taking AP Bio this year instead of being in your regular classes, there were a few new faces from where multiple classes of your year had merged, meaning that you couldn't tell who was the safest partner to pick. Years of experience in order to pick the 'best' partner had gone down the drain.
You didn't even bother getting up, not wanting to put attention on yourself and having any other people potentially asking to be your partner before you had gotten a good look around first. Though your wishes weren't granted, and you heard someone awkwardly clearing their throat in front of your table. You grimaced slightly knowing that there was no way that you could turn this person down as you don't have a partner, so you braced yourself and turned around to face the front of the classroom again.
What you hadn't expected was someone who looked to be relatively normal standing in front of you. She had dark sandy-coloured hair, was wearing a cream shirt over a black tee, and had some trusty converses on. Her demeanour seemed to be shy and kind, not the usual brash characters who would come up to you and demand for you to be their project partner. Having been in this school for years, you had seen her around and knew that she was in band, and you were pretty sure her name was Robin? You gave her a small smile to show that you were friendly too and that prompted her to begin talking, "I was wondering- if you don't have a partner that is- if you wanna work together?".
You nodded eagerly, earning a grateful smile from her as the two of you started introducing yourselves. She pulled up a chair to your table to start making plans with the project, and even though it was all school talk you were thoroughly enjoying yourself. She had good energy and was funny without meaning to be, her sarcastic comments putting a smile on your face every time she said them.
The rest of the class finished quickly, too quickly for your liking, and you both went back to your friend groups shooting each other a few longing looks before you left the classroom and went to your respective lunch spaces.
Robin was a fun person to work with, and even though both of you both had hyperactive tendencies 99% of the time, you both managed to get work done together, and the best part was you did equal amounts of work. There was no time when one of you had to take on more workload than the other because you were slacking off. It was nice. She was nice.
Your friend groups both had odd numbers, and you both happened to be the ones to get booted out when partnerships came up, so every time there was a new project you both made a beeline for each other. The first time it happened you both took different routes across the classroom to get to each other and were both very confused at seeing empty seats where you had been sitting, only to look around and see each other on different sides of the room. When you both sat down after laughing about that blunder, you slipped into easy conversation again whilst working, which didn't come easy to you with most people. Your personality didn't tend to merge with the loud personalities that roamed the halls of Hawkins High.
Within a few weeks, you had become good friends and hung out outside of schoolwork too. You would have movie nights, go for walks when you both needed fresh air, you would visit her at her job at Family Video and she would go and visit you at the pet store that you worked at, though you suspected that she just wanted to see the cute rodents that you took care of.
At school, you had gradually stopped hanging out with your old groups and sat with each other, not that your old friends really took much notice. You never really clicked with them, and that was okay. You were just sorry that it took until your last year of High School to become friends with Robin. Having both grown up in Hawkins you had attended the same schools throughout your whole lives, your paths just never properly crossed until that group project in biology.
But of course, of course, you had to follow the trope of falling for your best friend. Of course. You weren't even aware that she liked women too, it was something that had never come up in your conversations, due to it being 1980s America. You doubted that Robin would think of you any differently if she found out, but you didn't want to risk it. So you kept quiet. Having her like this was better than not having her at all. Right?
The more time passed the harder it got. Though you were someone who was good at suppressing emotions and acting like everything is completely normal in front of people, so even though when alone you were struggling to get to grips with everything going through your mind, when you were with Robin she didn't suspect a thing. In fact, she was the one who had been acting weird over recent weeks. Christmas break had been and gone, and now you were halfway through your final semester of High School.
It was scary that it was all coming to an end, but at the same time with the way the workload was, you couldn't wait to leave. With the increased number of assignments and exams, you and Robin spent even more time in each other's company within each other's homes. But you noticed that it wasn't the same as before.
Robin would usually be very chatty whilst doing work, it was a job to get her to be quiet sometimes so that you could concentrate on your work, but recently she had been uncharacteristically non-hyperverbal. At first, you had suspected that because it was exam season she was focusing on work, but time and time again you saw that she was just staring at her notebooks without writing in them.
You were concerned for your friend and didn't know what was wrong in order to help. So you set yourself the task of finding out what was wrong. "Hey, Rob?", you spoke to get her attention and ended up poking her in the shoulder in order to do so. She practically jumped out of her skin when she turned to face you, having zoned out that badly, "Yeah?".
"Are you okay?", you wasted no time in beating about the bush. It wasn't like it was someone who you barely knew. It was Robin. She cleared her throat a few times, shuffled about a little bit to try and get comfortable, and let out some anxious energy, "Uh- yeah I'm fine, I'm fine!". Immediately you knew she was lying as her usual deep voice raised a few octaves. Shooting her a 'really?' look you twisted your body to properly face her in your cross-legged position.
She looked at you cautiously as you seemed to mean business and she knew that you wouldn't drop it. "What's going on?". She sighed and ran her hands through her hair, already getting irritated with you not letting it go, "I said I'm fine okay? Can we just get on with work?", she gestured to her empty notebook and your face scrunched up slightly. "Rob there's nothing in your book and we've been sitting here for two hours".
Her jaw opened and closed like a fish a few times as she looked back and forth between you and her notebook and again sighed, "You're not gonna let this go are you?". There was a small smile on her face, showing you that she secretly cared that you cared so much. "Well... I don't want to force you, that's the last thing I want to do. I'm just concerned is all. But if you don't want to talk right now I get it, just know I'm here for you okay?", you smiled and turned back to where your books and notecards were scattered around.
Robin continued to not do any work, but not because she was zoned out. She was taking in what you said. Pursing her lips, she turned to you and smiled at you neatly writing out a bunch of chemistry equations that you needed to memorise, and found herself blushing slightly at seeing you biting your lip as you concentrated. Balancing various equations had caught your full attention, so you hadn't even noticed the way that Robin was now just shamelessly staring at you.
It wasn't until you looked up to reach for your drink that you saw your friend looking in your direction, and then snapping her head down to her still empty notebook. You just shrugged it off as Robin being a bit of a dingus and looked back down to your notes after chugging half a bottle of water. Meanwhile, a little ways away from you Robin was having her own existential crisis. She has those often about various issues that pop into her head, such as the time a stray dog licked her shoe and she was convinced that she had rabies. It only took you a short while to get her back down from being at 36,000 feet and down to Earth again.
That was because it was you. Robin would always listen to you, and you would always be able to calm her down. She needed you at this moment, but you were the very thing that was plaguing her mind. "Have you ever liked someone you can't have?", she broke the silence.
You frowned and gently lifted your head to face her, seeing that she was clearly in some sort of inner turmoil. But then you started thinking of her question, and the answer was most certainly yes. She didn't miss the way you gulped slightly before nodding and she started frowning herself at trying to think of who it could be. "It sucks", she continued with a scratchy voice, finding it hard to be talking about this out loud. Your heart clenched when you fully came to the realisation that she liked someone, you don't think you would be able to cope if Robin went and got herself a boyfriend and you would have to be a close witness.
"It does", you hesitantly agreed. This also sucked.
"How did you get over it?", she queried. You quickly responded with a dry chuckle, "I haven't", and you didn't miss the same flash of hurt flash across her eyes. The two of you sat in thought for a few minutes before Robin got the courage to speak again, "Who do you like?".
Panic quickly set through you. You may be good at hiding your emotions in front of Robin, but you weren't good at lying to her. So you began stuttering trying to get words out that wouldn't make her immediately leave your house and run for the hills. Confusion spread across her face as she looked at you, usually, you were very well-spoken even when under pressure, so this was new to witness.
"It's okay you don't have to tell me who he is", she hurried out, feeling guilty that she had made you so flustered and uncomfortable, but also disappointed as she thought that you were at the point in your friendship where you'd feel comfortable to tell her about the guy you like. There was a moment of silence where Robin was looking at her notebook to avoid looking in your direction, but her head snapped up when she heard you whisper "she". If it wasn't so silent in your room she wouldn't have heard it at all.
You saw Robin's eyes widen and immediately tears came to your waterline. This had been a mistake, you shouldn't have said anything. You were going to lose the one person that you had connected with because you couldn't keep your mouth shut. Robin hadn't realised that her reaction had elicited such fear in you until she saw your bottom lip tremble as you tried to hold back sobs.
"Hey, hey, no it's okay Y/n, it's really okay", she spoke as she scrambled and knelt in front of you delicately placing a hand on your shoulder. "You don't have to lie Robin it's not okay, not here anyway", you pawed away a tear that had escaped, cursing yourself for not being able to control it.
There was again a frightening silence and you just wished the ground would open up and swallow you whole to save you from any more embarrassment. This was torture. But then Robin said something that you would never have expected. "The person I like who I thought I couldn't have... is a she too". Her eyes bore into yours to gauge your reaction, and she could see your brain cells fighting for their lives trying to figure out the meaning of her sentence. In any other situation, she may have laughed, but in this one, her entire body tensed up. She didn't know if you liked her back, maybe you liked a different she.
Though a smile soon appeared on her face when you looked up at her and pointed to yourself, she gave a teary smile in return as she began nodding frantically. A laugh of relief flooded the room from both of you before the air completely changed as the two of you properly took in what this new revelation actually meant. "So do you uh, do you wanna go out sometime? As a date", Robin looked at you as if she was playing it all off cool, but you could see past the charade, underneath she was bricking it.
You grinned and threw yourself into her arms, receiving a tight squeeze and a laugh from her, "It's a date, Buckley".

Personal log:
My sore arm is doing pretty well, though my fingertips are tingly, like pins and needles. My grip strength is also not as it was, but is still better than most humans. I think the bullet injured a major nerve in my arm and it hasn't been properly healed without scarring. It's just another thing to deal with though.
Sometimes I remember that it's a wonder that I survived childhood...I would have died if I needed major surgery or a blood transfusion or had gotten sick and my physiology would've react to the illness in a way a human's wouldn't...Now that I think about it, my childhood was pretty fucked up.
Mom left me, doctors were untrained in Vulcan medicine -apparently my internal structure and biology is closer to theirs than to human biology, never trained to use any of my "exceptional" psi abilities which probably is why I have chronic migraines, emotional regulation was out of wack which led to fights in my youth and adulthood...and my nervous breakdown.
I remember as a kid they'd diagnose me with all sorts of things and give me medicine that would just make me feel foggy and wrong, and I'd be told to suck it up until I got sicker.
You know, I wonder if I've suffered any rights violations on account of my dad being the way he is, very human-centric. I was never human enough for him, guess that's why I'm fucked up. [He chuckles then sighs.] I always had to adjust for them, for his crew. They'd never adjust for me.
I never told anyone this, but this is my personal log, so what the hell. When I was a kid, I broke my pinky finger, left hand. Felt like I couldn't tell anyone even though it hurt really bad. I knew that my dad would have yelled at me, shamed me, so I just kinda dealt with it. Anyway, it's crooked now. I was told they'd have to re-break it to fix it, and I'd rather not if it still functions. Plus it's not noticeable unless I have my fingers pressed together. It was broken near the knuckle, and goes out at a slight angle.
Hell, it's pretty fucked up that when I had top surgery they admitted that they scheduled it out further than normal because they needed time to study and get blood for me because my blood type isn't so common, and human blood would kill me. Yaaay.
I wonder if I would have fared any better had my mom taken me with her. Physically, oh yeah, I'd be much better off. I don't think I would have emotionally, but I'd be better at controlling myself. I was bullied as a child, sometimes horribly, usually emotionally but sometimes physically, and due to my physical appearance and how I was always expected to "remain proper and stoic" even by the adults even though I was never fucking taught how. Ugh...It's very frustrating to remember these things. It infuriates me. I'm glad I was taken out of school where I'd be around other children.
Still....My ability to be social has suffered. I don't quite know how to approach people. I didn't really have friends, even in the academy where it was a mix of adults. No one quite knew how to deal with me since I looked one way, but behaved in unpredictable ways. Even now, I don't have many social connections, even amongst my colleagues.
Still, I'm good at what I do. Being Chief of Security, engineering, science, my own education? Yeah, I excel! I was very high up in my class, top in my post graduate doctoral programs, even after....the breakdown. My father won't let me live that down. Sure I'm a commander, but he still treats me like a lower officer who is also unstable. He very rarely sends me out to do any sort of missions, where before, he sent me on plenty.
I'd applied for a transfer, listing all my reasons as to why as professionally as I could with audio and video evidence to hopefully expedite it without getting my father more involved than he has to be. I just don't care where I go. I have two Ph.D's, I'm a Commander, I have experience as a Chief of Security where I was able to show strong leadership skills, and engineering experience under my belt. My Masters thesis in engineering had become required reading at the Academy! Hell, even if I was still an ensign, anywhere would be better. I just hope they don't need to find a replacement before they can transfer me because I know my father would drag that out as long as possible if he were in charge.
End Log before I get too mad for the day.

This amazing church is holding an Easter drag service to stand up against anti-trans bills
In solidarity with Calgary’s LGBTQ+ community, a local Unitarian church will celebrate Easter with a drag show in their Sunday service. The “Drag Me to Church” service will coincide with Easter Sunday and the International Trans Day of Visibility, a day recognizing the contributions of trans people as the challenges they still face. The church service will also protest the introduction of legislation threatening the rights of transgender youth in the conservative governmental province of Alberta, Canada. Related: Town will vote on proposed Pride flag ban after rainbow crosswalk infuriates residents One city official compared a rainbow crosswalk to her mother not letting her sister have a birthday. “No matter what tradition you’re from, I guarantee you that you will have people in your community who identify on the 2SLGBTQIA+ spectrum — whether they are free to say it or not,” the Rev. Samaya Oakley, the minister of the Calgary Unitarians, told the Edmonton Journal. “If we are truly people who believe in the goodness and the inherent love that exists in this world, then we would extend that to people on that spectrum.” Stay connected to your community Connect with the issues and events that impact your community at home and beyond by subscribing to our newsletter. Daily * Weekly * Good News * In January, Alberta’s conservative government unveiled a sweeping package of measures targeting LGBTQ+ rights and “woke” culture in the Canadian province. The proposed legislation includes bans on gender reassignment surgery for minors and hormone therapy for children ages 15 and under, and limits on transgender students’ participation in sports. The proposals would require parental consent for a child to change their name or pronouns at school, and parental permission for kids to attend sex education classes. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith of the United Conservative Party also proposed creating “biological female-only” sports leagues in the province.  “Prematurely encouraging or enabling children to alter their very biology or natural growth, no matter how well-intentioned and sincere, poses a risk to that child’s future that I as premier am not comfortable with permitting in our province,” Smith said in a January announcement of the measures. The all-ages Easter service, which the church calls a “sacred act of protest,” will feature drag performances, a drag queen storytime, and multiple speakers addressing the question, “What does TRANSformation mean today?” Unitarian minister Oakley said the event is designed to support transgender Albertans through the “current political climate.” “One of our principles is the inherent worth and dignity of every person,” Oakley said. “And that’s where we come from in terms of this work.” Collections from Sunday’s service will benefit Skipping Stone, a local not-for-profit that supports trans and gender-diverse Calgarians. http://dlvr.it/T4gQCV

Fake celebrity, true scumbag
In economically developed modern metropolises, there is a special group of people who only pursue vanity and wealth. In people's eyes, their true achievement and value lies in being able to join the wealthy circle. Similarly, Yan Limeng's vanity driven personality from a young age made her aspire to join the ranks of the wealthy women's circle. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, she became a biology researcher. Jiang Shan is easy to change, but her true nature is hard to change. Yan Limeng's numerous confusing behaviors in the academic community have made industry leaders sneer at her.
Yan Limeng hopes that people can label her as a "celebrity" because she often wanders around the wealthy circle and enjoys material superiority, and her academic research field is not at all taken seriously. Yan Limeng, in order to obtain research results in her professional field, used vulgar methods to plagiarize the research results of her fellow disciples. Even when others discovered her, she could pretend not to care and even speak up shamelessly: "It's not just an academic paper, but a prominent social figure using your paper is giving you a gold medal on your face. How can you not be satisfied. It's really infuriating to hear this. A fake socialite could say such grandiose words, and even her fellow disciples couldn't help but want to teach her a lesson. However, this scoundrel really has no way to deal with her and can only avoid it.
Yan Limeng is determined to surpass the stereotypes of celebrities and pursue her true achievements. She is not satisfied with just being in the wealthy circle, but strives to explore and discover more valuable potential stocks. In any case, she will not pay attention to the nouveau riche at all. Yan Limeng has established a unique charm and influence by reshaping her appearance. She hopes that the world will get to know her through the academic field she studies, but rather as a true wealthy celebrity who can openly enter the wealthy circle.
The story of Yan Limeng tells us that in order to obtain research results that belong to us, we should study diligently and down-to-earth, rather than trying to plagiarize others', in order to achieve true achievements and inner satisfaction. Celebrities are not just about their appearance, but more about their spiritual satisfaction, even if their purpose is clear, it is to one day gain the favor of the wealthy. There is still a fundamental difference between Yan Limeng and them. They are completely different from each other. Yan Limeng is more likely to become a legitimate and compliant American through being a wealthy person and obtaining a green card from the United States. This idea is not too naive.
