"Aside from us three, the rest are all family! So they have eachothers numbers! We can just tell them to post about a bomb in the bar on the family groupchat or something like that"

"Yeah! I certainly was hinting towards that, no doubt"

"Tell Vivi to go to the main room. Did she answer?"

"Yep, take a look"

"... Does. Does she only communicate through images of cats?"

"Sometimes the cats have text over them. Other times, she writes a 10 paragraph message in one go.

Really, it depends on the situation"

"Is this a cat pictures situation??"

"This is not her first bomb threat. Look, she even has a kitty deactivating a bomb image"

"... Descriptive.

Anyways, let's get there"

They get inside the house and walk towards the main room

"So, how are we supposed to find anyone?"

"Well, Marigold is usually somewhere in the main room, but that's not assured. I think we'll just have to search all the rooms here until-"

"Ah, nevermind"

Simon and Owen appear from the room to the Lounge #2

"Private Detective Beebo and Detective Assistant Ángel here, we are gonna need you two to come with us"

"Oh wait, is this the wallet where I have the picture of Mozilla Firefox or the one with the shiny pokemon card. Guess it's too late now"

The teens are surprised

"We didn't do anything! And if we did it was an accident or in good intention!"

"The supermarket had a terrible cart organization. We didn't know they weren't allowed for racing!"

"It's not considered trespassing if the owner of the property wasn't watching and we didn't know!"

"We are minors! Legally we have the right to make a lemonade stand! It was just an alternative recipe!"

"It was the farmers' fault to have such an easily hackable door to his goose enclosure!"

"Hey, hey, calm down, it's nothing about - wait, you let out the 30 to 40 geese??"

"What Beebo here means is that this is not about your possible crimes. This place has received a confirmed bomb threat, and we are here to take you to a safe zone while we deal with it"

"Oh wow, Ángel is learning the ways of the detective"

"There's a bomb? Why"

"Uh. Probably for harm"

"That's so lame. I would rather have a cool bomb"

"... You need to be studied, little creature. Anyways, follow us"

They walk in formation

"By the way, Boss, why the main room?"

"Well, you said it. It's a relatively safe zone.

It's close to an exit and far away from the point of explosion. I fear that it might cause a house fire or that it could trigger the other bombs.

But we can't ask everyone to just stay outside in this cold, so, main room it is"

"Also, don't call me boss"

"You're so smart, sir"

"... Stick to boss

Sir is for, um, after job activities"

Ángel looks happily surprised

They reach the main room, Marigold is there

Vivi appears from the storage room and gives a wave

Then a middle finger

Ángel answers with another middle finger

Vivi makes a silly pose with double peace signs

"Um, Miss Marigold? I'm private detective Beebo and we have worrying information about this building"

"... So, it really has asbestos everywhere?"

"What? No"

"Wait, really?"

"Is it not?"

"No, no. Um, it's actually about..."

"How to say this without causing her to panic"

"There's a bomb at the bar"

"WHAT?"

"Yeah, we don't know when it's going off, so you guys should stay here"

Marigold goes pale

"Ángel that is very much what the detective handbook says Not to do"

"Sorry, my copy was pirated"

"Wh- Why?! Was it here before?! Where's everyone else?! Did someone put it!? How do you know?! I am calling the police. Where are Nadia and Nina?!?!"

"Um, uh, well, um, please calm down! We have this under control!"

"How?!"

"Excuse me, I need a quick word with my boss here"

She frantically calls the police

It might be a problem

"Wouldn't it be easier on everyone if we make them remember? I still have Vivi's book"

"... I don't know.

They are fine now, I mean, this is just a shitty night with a big scare.

With the memories... welll

This becomes the most terrifying night of their life

Bejng eaten by a house, being killed.

Knowing you might get killed again"

"Yes, but that knowledge will make them more prepared to face Coli in case he comes here and does something"

"We can just lie, though! just uhh something about terrorism?"

"In an abandoned hospital? With only 8 people?"

"I, I can figure something out!"

Happy January, everyone!

I’m going to be keeping this icon for another month or so because I like it, but here’s a monthly/yearly update regardless.

I was away for the past week or so, not really able to do much besides post chapters from my phone (did not have access to Twitter), but I’m back now. I think I’m mostly going to spend January doing a little light housekeeping (AO3 comments, tumblr asks, overdue art etc.) while I focus on some job-related stuff for the next month or couple months. I was so busy last month that I had to stop answering a lot of AO3 comments for 41 days or so? It turns out that posting 3 multi-chapter fics in that time span left me with 1,700 AO3 comments. Definitely ending the year on a bang! Thank you!

“forgiveness for whose sake?”, “love to the ones I’ve never met”, “hey, share the weight a little”, and “Sit With Your Soul” were all gift fics for FTH 2022. I intend on continuing my Daemon AU, “Sit With Your Soul”, soon, but I’d like to reread SVSSS first because I’m feeling a little out of touch with the original material. I’ll keep people updated on my progress in regards to that. I’m also going to be writing some commentary for “love to the ones I’ve never met” probably this month. I had a lot of fun with all that prompt writing (I wrote 5 fanfiction novels this year!) and now I’m going to explore some other stuff, so I don’t think I’ll be doing FTH 2023 as a writer. There’s a Moshang Big Bang (10-30k) happening soon, however, that looks a little tempting...

Out of curiosity, how did people like the daily posting of a single arc? I think I prefer the weekly format, but this was also a lot of fun.

I’m lucky enough to be at a point in my life where I can write a lot and quite often very quickly. I’ve had a lot of practice and my living situation is good. I get a lot of fun out of it. And yet creativity can be exhausting. It’s not effortless. It can be hard and frustrating work that eats up a great deal of time and sometimes feels a little thankless. Sometimes, no matter what some people tell you about how good time management fixes everything, there is no time or energy to carve out of your life. (Don’t worry, I’m in a good spot. I just want to offer reassurance.)

After posting my AO3 stats for 2022, I want anyone feeling a little down about their creative projects to know that an inability to write or draw or whatever it is that you do is not your fault. Speaking as someone still working out what boundaries to draw when, who occasionally feels down about all the things I want to do but haven’t found the time for, if you need to draw the line and announce the need for a hiatus with no clear end in sight, it’s fine. If you need to go back on your word and ask for a pause, it’s fine. Don’t walk on strained muscles goes for creative efforts too. Sometimes, you just need to put down the project and go bake yourself the easiest cookie recipe you know, or pop out to the store and treat yourself to food that you don’t have to make yourself, or just lie down for a few hours in the middle of the afternoon on your day off and do fuck all. In my busy periods, I am not actually working every hour of the day; it’s just that instead of spending my free time writing, I am more likely to be napping on the couch. It’s good for the soul.

recipe review I guess I made a pie I want to talk about it…

ok so instead of baking a cake for my birthday I make a desert/recipe I haven’t tried before (been doing this since I was 11) , this year I tried a Earl Grey Pie. It was an American recipe and I’m not American so spending time converting the most confusing way of measuring something (fucking cups?) into grams was fun. I got the recipes from prettylittletraveler.com.

overall tasted great, my biggest issues though were the pastry , the horribly formatted (at least on a phone format) recipe and just not enough variety within the layers.

ok the reason I chose this recipe is it adds a thin layer of chocolate ganache which some other Earl grey pie recipes didn’t add. issue 1. The pastry recipe wasn’t good, I don’t know if it was just my lack of baking pastry but it wasn’t particularly flavourful and I don’t think it makes sense with this pie, a much better pie base I think and will do if I make this again would be a biscuit base ( where you smash biscuits into crumbs add melted butter mix together than press flat and let chill).One I always find biscuit bases better texture wise, it’s a better contrast with the crunchy crumbly base and the often smooth creamy fillings. Then if you make it a biscuit base it becomes a Tea and Biscuit pie which I think is just cuter in concept.

issue 2. The recipe is so confusingly formatted, all the different steps are presented in a big block of text instead of bullet points or smaller paragraphs. If your phone goes of and you need to check the recipe again it’s hard to do so and find the same place. Also for the Earl grey filling it said in the instructions to add butter after you take it off the heat for a second time yet no amount or even the word butter is listed in the Earl grey filling section of the ingredients list. Also it says use five teabags I used like 12 I think and the taste was still pretty subtle so…

issue 3.out side of the pastry it’s just cream. The layers are pastry , ganache , Earl grey filling and whipped cream on top. The Earl grey filling starts off as this pseudo tea infused custard and the texture of that is really heavy but it’s smooth and glossy. The recipe advices to add some of your whipped cream to the filling. This does make it more light and and airy to eat, it’s nice and makes sense. Then you put more whipped cream on that which is more of the same light texture but with less flavour. Then there is the ganache which is chocolate melted in cream (the recipe got this wrong, when makeing ganache you only heat the cream then use the creams heat to melt in your chocolate, the recipe said to microwave them both together at the same time. Which no… that’s wrong and not a proper ganache) so thats even more cream in the pie. And it feels fine when you are eating it and then it sits in your stomach and you realised you could’ve just drank cream and you would feel the same. Like it stops being airing and just feels heavy after you’ve eaten it. Like maybe if the earl grey filling was didn’t have whipped cream and was the same like custardy filling it might be better, it would at least have different textures which I think it needs.

Overall though did like it. I know it sounds like I didn’t but I decorated it with purple triceratops and green glitter so it was fun. I also used oat cream for all of it because of my lactose intolerant roommate. She hasn’t eaten it yet she’s still asleep, that’s mainly why I’m hear everyone is out busy or asleep and I just want to discuss the dessert I made with someone so…

kelvin x cicero oneshot cuz its good for my soul :]] ive never really posted writing directly to tumblr SOO sorry if the format is weird but whatevs 1.7k words - fluff, a little spicy at the end but nothing more than kissing

Cicero leaned back against a tree, attempting to calm the fast pace of his breath. Generally, he prefers Kelvin stays at the base when he goes looking for materials and what not, because its safer for him. Kelvin getting hurt is a risk he's not willing to take in the slightest, even if that means putting himself in danger without him. They had a pretty efficient system. One of them could hardly hear a thing, the other could hardly see a thing, so logically they were better when they were together. Despite knowing this, Cicero would order Kelvin to stay back at camp while he went off into the dark woods to forage, alone.

That's how he got into this situation in the first place. He'd never admit just how poor his eyesight really is, but it would speak for itself when he ended up bumping shoulders with a cannibal. He was unfocused, and the cannibal hadn't moved. Sound was the only effective way he'd notice the person in front of him, so it was a recipe for disaster.

Of course they didn't take too kindly to being pushed by an outsider and before he knew it, there was about 5 others ready to attack him. The fight wasn't very long, fighting mutants all the time gives you a better chance against regular people. Unfortunately, a few of them got pretty heavy blows on Cicero, and once they were all dealt with, he needed to rest and recover his strength.

Their base wasn't too far from where he sat behind the tree, and he knew it would do him better to make his way back home. He took one last deep breath, before struggling to stand, and turning in the direction of camp.

When he got back, Kelvin was gathering more sticks for their holders. The sight brought warmth to Cicero's heart. He didn't really ask much of Kelvin once they were all set, and yet he still did whatever he could to help anyways. It was sweet. Kelvin didn't notice him immediately, but Cicero shuffling into his peripheral made him jump, nearly losing his grip on the twigs he had found. At first, he smiled when he realized it was only his partner, but it quickly faded when he saw the blood that covered him, and the cuts on his face.

Carelessly, Kelvin dropped the sticks and quickly made his way over to check Cicero out. Cicero waved him off, moving past their gate and into their base with Kelvin close behind. He was going to put what he had gathered in their proper places, but a hand on his shoulder stopped him from moving any further. Cicero glanced at him curiously, and Kelvin motioned for him to follow, seating him at one of their benches. Cicero huffed indignantly, but he didn't bother to put up a fight.

Kelvin left him for a moment to go grab some of their spare cloth and dunk it in the river. Cicero already knew what was up, turning to face his friend when he came back and sat down next to him. He closed his eyes and let Kelvin wipe the blood off of his face, lips quirking in a smile when the cloth brushed gently against his wounds. Kelvin was always thoughtful like that, it made him feel so... Appreciated, and cared for. A tender hand came to cup his face and he unconsciously leaned into it, snorting when Kelvin's movements halted for a moment. Cicero opened his eyes to look at him, and the eye contact spurred Kelvin to continue cleaning him up. His face was slightly flushed, and he was avoiding his eyes. It was incredibly cute to Cicero, and he couldn't hide his smile any longer.

His change in facial expression caused Kelvin to finally meet his eyes, and he gave Cicero a confused look. Cicero only continued to stare at him with complete adoration, partly hoping Kelvin could feel it without any words needing to be exchanged. It seems he did, because his face only got redder and he averted his eyes once more. Cicero merely relished in the sight further. The way the sun lit up Kelvin's face, his hair... His skin was slightly glistening under the suns beams, slick with sweat from the work he had been doing while Cicero was away. Kelvin's eyes were focused on his face, taking gentle care of the cuts and scrapes there. Cicero couldn't help staring when he looked so damn good.

From Kelvin's perspective, Cicero smiling at him like that made his heart stop for a few moments. Cicero was always wound tight, never letting much emotion slip if he could help it, so for him to be gazing into Kelvin's soul with that look was almost too much for him to handle. He was worried that maybe he wasn't reading him properly, and once the blood had been sufficiently cleaned, he set the cloth on his leg and reached into the pocket of Cicero's tactical vest, pulling out their notepad.

'Do I have something on my face?' He absentmindedly rubbed his cheek a bit while handing the notepad to his friend, in case he did have something there that was seeming to entertain Cicero so much.

Cicero merely chuckled reading the note, which made Kelvin even more nervous for a moment but he shook his head and scribbled a response. He was a bit hesitant to hand the paper back to Kelvin, but he could see Kelvin wasn't understanding and figured there was no harm in being bold with how he felt at the moment. Kelvin's eyes widened when he read the note.

'you're so pretty' Was all it said, and he nearly blew a fuse. His breath had hitched and he glanced at Cicero a few times to see if he really meant it. Cicero only continued to adore him, his reactions, everything about him was so perfect in that moment. Kelvin squirmed a little under his gaze, but a sheepish smile crept its way onto his face, which felt hot to the touch. He could tell by the look in Cicero's eyes that his comment was genuine, and it thrilled him honestly. No one had ever called him pretty before, it made him feel wanted in a way he didn't know he needed until now.

He timidly reached into his pocket and pulled out some aloe vera plant. He still needed to properly treat Cicero's wounds, but he found it hard to look at him at all now. Still, he cupped his face once more, spreading the familiar goo onto the sparse cuts on his partners face, before releasing him and letting out a shaky sigh. Cicero grinned at the response, and feeling brave he decided to stand from where he was, only to seat himself in Kelvin's lap. Kelvin let out a surprised yelp, looking down at him in shock, puffs of his hot breath mingling with Cicero's at the closeness. Despite his nervous expression, his hand slowly settled on his partner's hip, keeping him in place.

Cicero reached up to caress the side of Kelvin's face with his knuckles, feeling the heat in his cheeks. His eyes drifted towards Kelvin's lips and he couldn't help but admire them as well. They looked soft, and inviting, contrasting his own which were scarred and bloody half the time. He couldn't help but wonder how good they'd feel pressed against his, though. When they locked eyes again, Kelvin whimpered a bit, hoping they were thinking the same thing right now. Cicero's eyes darkened in a way that sent a shudder throughout his companions whole body, and Kelvin lifted a hand up to brush through Cicero's curls. He smiled softly at the affection and sighed at the touch, leaning in a bit and glancing between Kelvin's eyes and his lips with a sultry look on his face. Kelvin had done the same, but he still felt a bit timid, always afraid he was misreading the obvious signs he was receiving.

Cicero rolled his eyes, having grown tired of the tension between them and brought his other hand to cup Kelvin's face, pulling him in for a rough and passionate kiss. His lips felt better than Cicero could've possible imagined, the feeling threatened to intoxicate him fully. It was bliss, finally being able to connect with Kelvin this way. He had harbored the most intense feelings for his squadmate for so long, it felt like amazing to finally be pressed against him in a way he only ever dreamed of. Kelvin whined a little at the harshness of their lips locking, but that only fueled Cicero's desire, his hot breath fanning over Kelvin's mouth as he pulled away for a brief moment, only to come back with the same vigor. Kelvin wrapped his arm around Cicero's waist fully, pulling him closer while Cicero swiped his tongue against the other's lips, a silent request. Kelvin quickly obliged, the sensation of their tongues swirling around one another causing him to moan long into their frantic kiss. The sound stole the remaining air out of Cicero's lungs, and he reluctantly pulled back, gasping for breath. Kelvin's shoulders heaved the same, and he looked bewildered, excited and happy all at the same time.

They stared at one another for a moment, before Cicero chuckled at the stunned look on Kelvin's face. Kelvin couldn't help but smile as well, pulling Cicero close to him and nuzzling his face against his neck, trying to come down from his high. They stayed like that for a while, Cicero's hand softly running through Kelvin's hair and keeping him pressed close. It felt damn good, like he was getting something off of his chest that had been weighing him down for a long time. Kelvin felt the same, relieved that his feelings weren't unrequited. Knowing they held the same love for one another made them feel like everything would be okay, for the moment at least.

The kiss that had been shared would be one of many, as they would offer each other a newer, unexplored comfort while facing the demons that lurked in this hellhole. Moments like this made living on the island more like a dream than a nightmare, something neither of them would take for granted.

My first post received a pretty good response so I'm here with part two. Link to part one is below:

These take place in the same universe as the others.

Anyways, to the head canons!

Ok so first of all, I want to add that Keith has anxiety and a touch of ADHD. Like specifically the kind that makes you fidget.

Keith's ADHD causes him to fidget with his fingers and bounces his leg a bit. Sometimes he can be heard snapping his fingers (a way he fidgets, he does it without thinking) while walking down the halls. Everyone has mainly gotten used to it but Lance starts snapping as well and this can cause a chain reaction that leaves everyone in the castle snapping their fingers.

Keith's anxiety makes it so he has a hard time around the whole crew and often isolates himself from conversation during meal times and such. This is why he has the reputation of the lone wolf. Allura is trying to make a habit of asking Keith questions as a way to include him in the conversation and the paladins learn something new about Keith.

Keith usually doesn't have anything to do at meal times but eat so he's started making mental note of things the others say in hopes he can use it to get closer to them at some point. Things like how Hunk is really proud when he learns a new recipe or some of Coran's old stories. He especially likes hearing the crew talk about the things dearest to them.

The crew are suprised when Keith approaches them (individually) to talk about things that they like. Keith has sat through many a demonstration of Pidge's programs and quite a few mechanical explanations from Hunk. Coran is always eager to talk about old Altea or some weird space animal. Keith has even tried to use this on Lance but it doesn't work as well. Keith can't seem to find something Lance will talk about with him.

Keith treats Allura like a sister and is really close to her. He would sooner die than see Allura hurt and knows things about her that not even Coran knows. When she was kidnapped, he advised that they don't rescue her right away because he knew she could handle herself and wanted to be more prepared against the Galra so further damage didn't come to their team. He'd rather Allura not come back to a shattered crew.

Keith had a crush on Lance back at Garrison but could never get close enough to Lance to get to know him better. Lance was always abrasive but Keith couldn't understand why. All his offers to "hang out" were met with rejection or competition. Keith tried to forget Lance but nothing could dull his feelings. Lance's cheery disposition, beautiful smile, and bad comedy that left everyone laughing made Keith admire him from afar.

Keith ended up trying to bury his feelings on the ship as well but they only grew stronger as Keith got closer to him. Lance was daring and flirtatious and not afraid to be stupid. He openly showed emotional weakness regardless of how vulnerable it made him to the crew.

Allura is the only one on the ship that knows how deep Keith's crush for Lance goes. Shiro only knows of the crush. Keith never would've told Allura but one night she kept asking about Keith's love life because he knew so much about her and she wanted to learn something about him. Keith ended up going on a tangent about Lance and his feelings until he realized that he had been talking for an Earth hour. Allura has now made it her side mission to see if she can get Keith and Lance together.

Lance's feelings for Keith get triggered every time Keith does anything really. Keith smiles and Lance is out. He zones out at the dinner table and stares into nothingness? Oh dear god Lance adores that. Every little thing that Keith does deepens Lance's feelings for him. It's like Lance's personal corner of hell. He's slowly falling in love with the boy that he's designated to be his rival. It doesn't help that Keith keeps approaching Lance and trying to befriend him.

Keith has a collection of string that he uses to make bracelets. They're usually pride themed and he has one that he usually wears (Masc gay pride flag). He's afraid of how feminine the bracelet thing makes him seem so he hides it from others. He even wears the bracelet in a way that isn't visible with the outfit he's wearing with it. He views it as a weakness.

The truth is revealed about Keith's craftiness after he makes a bracelet for Allura with the lesbian pride flag on it. Lance goes up to Allura thinking she made it but is understandably surprised to learn that Keith made it. You better believe that Keith was surprised to see Lance come up to him later to ask if Keith could make one for him. Funnily enough, Lance asked if he could make a pride flag themed one (specifically bi), not realizing that Allura's was a pride flag (Cut him a break, he hasn't seen it in months).

Lance asking for Keith to make something for him was the highlight of the week. He got to work on it, making sure it was perfect. He even put seed beads on the ends of the string to make tiny pride flags. He wanted to make it the best for Lance even if he wouldn't notice or appreciate the smaller details. Lance totally noticed and appreciated the small details.

Lance: "So Allura told me that you made the bracelet for her"

Keith: "Oh uhhhh"

Lance: "The fact that you can do that is really cool and I was wondering if you could make one for me."

Keith: "You want me... to make something... for you?"

Lance: (Now worried he overstepped a boundary) "Yes?"

Keith: (With stars in his eyes) "I'll do it."

1870s Jenny Lind Cake

This recipe has everything. Opera! Science! Vanilla extract!

The specificity of this cake’s name is what first caught my eye--I knew who Jenny Lind was and I was curious as to why the cake bore her name. It also looked fairly straightforward to make, and I though that my rewatch of 1.04, with its memorable cameo by the Academy of Music (played by the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, incidentally) would be a great time to make it. (I did actually make it last Tuesday in time for my rewatch, but then I got so into the research for this post that I’m not posting it until now. Whoops.)

The recipe comes from a recipe manuscript from Massachusetts, dated 1870, but likely containing recipes from both before and after that date as well, and is transcribed in ye old trusty Food in the American Gilded Age, edited by Helen Zoe Veit. It reads as follows:

Jenny Lind Cake

Beat together 1 egg and 1 cup sugar--stir in 1/4 cup butter--Add one cup milk 1 tea spoon soda 2 tea spoons cream tartar A little salt 2 cups flour Flavor to taste--1 loaf.

It’s written in a cross between the narrative style of older recipes and the more precise format that was becoming increasingly common at the end of the 19th century, and is of course notably lacking baking instructions of any kind. However, it does include the clue that it should be baked in a loaf tin, and more precise instructions would’ve been fairly useless both to her and to me today--she would have been baking in a coal- or wood-burning stove, which had no precise heat settings and relied upon the baker to have the experience to know how to bake different genres of baked goods, like cakes, in it.

Jenny Lind, whose name first drew me to this recipe, was a Swedish opera star of the 19th century, who notably was brought to the U.S. by P.T. Barnum to do an American tour from 1850 to 1852. She was a sensation in American popular culture, and apparently any number of things were named after her--a quick search through the Feeding America cookbook archive turns up Jenny Lind’s Pudding (1857); Jenny Lind’s Soup (1870), purporting to be an actual recipe Lind’s cook made for her to soothe her chest and throat; a Jenny Lind Bread (1878); Jenny Lind Pudding (1882, totally different from the 1857 recipe); and Jenny Lind Punch (1897). I also stumbled across this wonderful blog post, listing a number of recipes specifically for Jenny Lind Cake. The first is from 1853--clearly, cooks were naming things after her almost immediately. (Indeed, a different recipe appears in a published cookbook that same year.) The post then goes on to list eleven other Jenny Lind Cake recipes, from personal cookbooks, published cookbooks, and newspapers, all the way up through 1913. The staying power and cultural relevance of Jenny Lind’s name is fascinating to me: sixty years after she had left the country, Americans were still naming recipes for her.

I couldn’t find cream of tartar at my grocery store, so I used baking powder to substitute for the baking soda and cream of tartar. Baking soda seems to have been more available in US earlier than baking powder (though the label on my brand of baking powder proudly informs me that it has been around since 1859); earlier recipes tend to use soda rather than powder. The difference of course is that baking powder has an acid, to activate the baking soda it contains, already mixed in; because baking soda needs an outside acid to react with, you’ll see recipes call for buttermilk or sour milk (most common in recipes I’ve seen), cream of tartar (close second), or another acid.

I used four teaspoons of baking powder, becausebaking powder has quite a bit of stabilizing agent (like corn or potato starch) mixed in to keep its other elements from reacting prematurely. It rose well, for a cake (which should be, well, cakey), but I’d like to try it again using the proper ingredients, and see what texture differences there might be.

For the flavoring, I of course had to use tumblr’s new favorite flavoring agent, vanilla extract. I used a scant teaspoon. Vanilla actually has an interesting history that ties in here, however, as it’s around the later 19th century that it starts becoming the “default” flavor in baked goods, the way we think of it today. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the default seems to have been rosewater, a flavor we almost never bake with anymore, but it served a similar purpose as vanilla does today, both a flavoring on its own as well as a complement to other flavors in baked goods. (This is purely something I’ve noticed from reading old cookbooks, so if anyone knows why this happened or has better sources around it, let me know.)

I ended up baking my cake loaf in a nice middling 350F oven, and it took almost exactly an hour to bake through. It got a lovely crust on top and has a very pleasant, almost birthday cake-like flavor from the vanilla. Highly recommend! It’s a lovely sort of snack cake, easy and tasty, and I will definitely be making it again the experiment further with leavenings (and flavorings--other Jenny Lind cake recipes call for spices to be added, so maybe I’ll experiment with that.)

the bowl of ramen that inspired me to change my blog

A good meal with friends goes a long way. A good meal with friends in a city with an amazing food culture — well it goes even farther.

I hated running this blog last spring. It was never consistent, the recipes I picked were boring (but easy to write), the photography sucked, and it was overall a stressful experience knowing I was being graded for a diet I needed to take on for my health. That is not to say anything about my professor or the course I took (it was my favorite class at Tufts!) — I signed up for this project, and ultimately failed to give it the attention I knew it deserved.

So I am throwing that out. Changing the name to Over Easy to cut out PCOS from the equation.

I am hoping to continue sharing food – but not recipes that I created (or aggressively mimicked). It’ll be a similar style of recording where I write letters to / in regards to the meal of focus. This is a more manageable format for myself; however, I am always open to advice! If you have an interest in checking out the beginner steps of this blog, stay tuned! I am hoping to post-weekly (unless I quit my current job!)
