Romantic Fantasy & Fantasy Romance Book Recs
I recently made a post looking for the book/reader community on Tumblr and I found a lot of you! A couple people asked for book recommendations so here they are. All of these have varying levels of spice unless otherwise mentioned. I do recommend going into all of these blind and just see if you like them with zero expectations. I find it makes the reading experience better if you aren’t expecting something to be the greatest thing ever. Then you can only be surprised if you like it (or hopefully love it!) All of these are fantasy romance!!
Tagging some peeps who said they also love fantasy romance or seemed like they would like to know about some book recs: @imhilien @raven-reads87 @accidentalspaceexplorer @the-dust-jacket @melindacopp @taylorsversion213 @siruisreader @faerie-smut-merchant @gwelwynn @hitchhikerbooks @astrid162 @arewedancer99 @bookwyrmtaz @sourpatchkid99 @caffeinated-bibliophile @books-and-cookies @eaterofbooks @franticvampirereads @carissabroadbent - sorry if I forgot anyone or if you did not want to be tagged. Happy reading!
- Daughter of No Worlds, the first book in The War of Lost Hearts trilogy by Carissa Broadbent. You’ve got grumpy/sunshine, badass female protagonist, a “who did this to you?” scene, and so much more!! It’s dark but still has so much love and is just. So, so good. I will never shut up about how much I adore this criminally underrated series. There is absolutely nothing I disliked about this book. This is my favorite trilogy ever, up there tied with my favorite series ever. There’s no miscommunication and the characters handle hard situations maturely. It’s dark at times and deals with slavery, torture, and the injustices that entails, but it’s also empowering and full of hope and funny quips. The characters are lovable and complex. The pacing is the best pacing of any book. The romance is sweet yet still full of tension. The plot is incredible. I cannot recommend this book enough. It flawlessly balances the mundanity of living with the largeness of this universe and literal world ending stakes. She balances joy and grief, laughter and sorrow, trauma and healing. It’s a true feat when your heart aches with all of it at the same time. Each book is incredible. The character I was hesitant to love in the first book had me sobbing with the realism and heartache that I felt for her in the last book. If you listen to the audiobook, the narrators were perfectly cast as well. Tisaanah, the FMC has a language barrier and it’s done so incredibly well, especially when listening to the audiobook. It remains one of my favorite things about Daughter of No Worlds. This series is criminally underrated and I will never understand how it isn’t at the top of booktok. 12/10, move this up to the top of your TBR. Each book is just as good as the one before it. I’m obsessed with this series. This series is on KU!! It’s a completed trilogy!!
- The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L Jenson. And it’s included in your Audible Plus subscription if you have one. The tension, the conflict, the romance. I love a morally grey mc as much as the next gal, but Aren is the equivalent of a golden retriever and I would die for him and Laura. Enemy kingdoms. Marriage. A perfect Enemies to lovers!! Also on KU!! Completed duology, with a third book focusing on a different couple.
- The Witch Collector by Charissa Weaks. This is one of the best fantasy romances I’ve read! The FMC is a mute witch!! The plot, the tension, the characters, all of it is amazing. I fell in love with these characters and this world. Not to mention the ✨sexual tension✨ is some of the best I’ve ever read. It’s well earned too! Alexus and Raina have made my list of favorite ships. The sequel, City of Ruin, introduced a bunch of new characters and POVs (including the villains!) is a lot spicier, and just overall expands the world and the characters!! It’s action packed and made me look at the series in a new light! It does end on a major cliffhanger though, so be aware! Still read it. But it’s not tied up with a bow (yet!) I cannot express how excited I am for the third book and the direction this story is going. Highly, highly recommend! She also has signed copies on her Etsy!
- The Scribe by Elizabeth Hunter! This is a completed urban fantasy with romance series with 7 books. The first 3 books follow the same couple and can be read as a completed series - the other books focus on different couples and are just an extension. A race of beings ascended from angels are at war. Our main protagonist Ava is a human photojournalist who has heard voices in a nonexistent language her whole life and has always been told and believed she’s just crazy…but is she?? I love when we get a character thrown into a fantasy world who has no knowledge of it (like the reader!) it’s so fun. The romance is 🔥🔥🔥 and I love them. Ava is smart and savvy but not otherworldly strong like a lot of protagonists. She’s learning. And MAGIC! I love magic. I love the magic in this universe. The pacing is great and it’s a great balance of romance and plot. It’s a super interesting premise and I just think more people should read this series. I do not recommend the audiobook through - I hated the narrator. Book is great though! Also on KU!!
- I’ve found that whichever SJM series you start with is your favorite but Throne of Glass is next level. It was her first series and she spent half of her life writing it. You can see some of the groundwork for ACOTAR in it. But where ACOTAR is about the romance, ToG is about the plot. The romances are secondary to the plot. But for ACOTAR, the plot is secondary to the relationships and romance. ToG is so expertly planned out and it’s a slow burn into fantasy. It’s my number 1, favorite series. It’s definitely more YA but grows into what I would consider more New Adult towards the end of the series. Do not go into this series expecting spice. There is romance, but there are not any spicy scenes until the later books. The journey you go on with Celaena from Assassin’s Blade to Kingdom of Ash is unparalleled. It feels so special and epic. BUT I will say I went into the series completely blind with no expectations. So I suggest doing the same. And the first few books might seem slow. But KEEP GOING it’s worth it, I swear. And start with the prequel Assassin’s Blade!! It’s broken up into interconnected short novellas for the prequel only. The series has a more full circle feeling when you start with the prequel, and you don’t know things that you might otherwise know if you read Throne of Glass first. Starting with the prequel also made me love Celaena more. If you are just starting fantasy, start with Throne of Glass because it is a slow burn into fantasy. This is a completed series
- The Song of the Marked by S.M. Gaither. I was told this book would cure my Throne of Glass hangover. I’d agree! It also gives me major From Blood and Ash vibes, but with better characters. It’s got a great magic system, fun friendship dynamics and banter, a slow burn enemies to lovers, and some good ol’ fashion mystery surrounding the protagonist. I’m really enjoying it so far and if you like fantasy, I highly recommend!!
- Hollow Heathens (Tales of Weeping Hollow) by Nicole Fiorina - it’s like if Halloweentown met Storybrooke from Once Upon a Time, and had a child. It’s a gothic romance and is just so different from everything I’ve read. Also on KU!! This is a standalone.
- The North Wind by Alexandria Warwick. It’s a fun enemies to lovers Beauty and the Beast and Hades and Persephone retelling. Mix elements of those stories together and you have The North Wind. Also on KU!! Can be read as a stand-alone. The next book, which isn’t out yet, focuses on a different couple.
- An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. You’ve got a spy posing as a slave to save her brother. A trained assassin brought up in a merciless, brutal school where he wants to escape. There’s a love triangle of sorts, which I usually hate but I didn’t mind it in this! It’s action packed and has made me love YA again. Dark, with themes of generational trauma, the importance of storytelling, the ✨power of love✨, breaking generational cycles, mercy, and tragedy of war. Lots of character growth for everyone!! Inspired by the gladiator times in the Roman Empire. Young Adult but very violent. No spice, all fade to black.
- The Serpent and The Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent!! I had high expectations for this book. Carissa’s other series, The War of Lost Hearts, is my favorite series ever. And now with one book out so far, Crown of Nyaxia is making that list too. The world building. The characters. The complexity and emotions and just everything about it. It’s a masterpiece. I love the relationships!! And the last quarter of the book had me on an emotional rollercoaster through the end. I wanted to reread this book the moment I finished it. If a dark, gritty, high stakes fantasy romance with Hunger Games meets vampires and swoon worthy, epic romance (and some spice!!) sounds like your thing, drop everything else your reading and start this. This is the first book in a series and was just released. Carissa is my favorite author and one thing that she does really well is write strong, healthy relationships. Her characters don’t fall into lust and then in love - it’s a buildup of respect, trust, friendship, and then love. (And 🌶️🌶️ of course, but the relationships are more than that.) Raihn is my new #1 book boyfriend!!
- The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen is a new comfort read for me. but if you want a super fun, quirky, romance with You’ve Got Mail vibes set in a fantasy universe that also has zombie like creatures, this is it. I know that sounds weird af, but it is so cute and I can’t stop smiling as I read it!! It’s a new favorite and is just SO CUTE! And I cried!!
- A Deal With the Elf King by Elise Kova! This is a standalone, enemies to lovers, arranged marriage fantasy romance!! I love all the characters in this, especially the growth of the MMC! The FMC feels a lot of responsibility to take care of everyone around her and she doesn’t allow others to disrespect her (especially the MMC!) There are lots of swoon worthy lines that had me smiling and blushing and some spice! Highly recommend!!
- The High Mountain Court by A.K. Mulford. It has witches, fae, a fun magic system, mates, natural LGBTQIA+ and POC representation, spicy, enemies to lovers, touch her and die (and the opposite touch him and die!), a truly wonderful and swoon worthy romance, and is just a great NA fantasy romance! Each book focuses on a different couple and follows a cohesive storyline!
- Between Wrath and Mercy by Jess Wisecup. You’ve got a mom hellbent on getting her kidnapped teenage daughter back. She needs the help of the Crown Prince - her first love - to do it. A spicy fantasy romance that is both character driven and plot driven. It’s so refreshing to read “older” (ie not 16 - 25 years old) characters in a fantasy romance!! The tension is high and the grief and love that intermingle to form the emotional backbone of these characters is so poignant and beautifully done. It’s also nice to see a mom who has an identity outside of being a mom! But she’s still a great mom! It was so refreshing to read and the second book is even better than the first! Very dark and yet also sweet and romantic and intense.
- The Cruel Prince by Holly Black! Also known as The Folk of the Air trilogy. If you’re looking for a spicy fantasy series, this isn’t it. There’s no spice. But if you’re looking for an AMAZING YA fantasy villain arc with enemies to lovers, fantastic storytelling, plot twists, and just an overall faerie adventure, read this series. I was hesitant to read it because of its YA rating/audience. But it’s easily one of my favorite series of all time! I love the characters, the plot, the arc, and the writing style! I read each book in less than two days. Highly, highly recommend. I also read them on audiobook and the narration is fantastic!

I'm imagining an au where there are ACTUAL trials in evils theatre.
But what is weird is that the dead... seem to come back to life for trials to defend themselves, defend others or even sue people?
At first the theatre crew and the dead are like "yo wtf" but they get used to it. Most of the dead are in trials once or twice but there are several of them who are there A LOT.
Also by triaI mean someone says:
(Insert Name) is guilty of this and this
And then everyone involved participates in the discussion like: were they actually guilty, their reasons, outside reasons and what the victim says etc.
So my ideas for this:
Michaela is a regular member, forming a body out of roots and shit to either participate or observe trials bc that's how she gets amusement out of life as a tree
Gammon managed to get Lilith a guily verdict over the green hunting, she didn't speak to him for a month(no one knows if it was bc she regretted it or bc she was angry at him or both)
The punishment for being found guilty is cleaning and doing the chores of the theatre for a week
Gammon constantly tries to get the theatre members convicted bc of this
Nemesis regains her memories bc i want her to once every two months and causes the BIGGEST trials bc she has dirt on everyone
She once got Irina(who isn't always the judge) to be convicted for the Lioness Burning Incident
Gumillia is sick of this bs because she gets summoned to trials all the damn time bc of her partnership w Seth
When they need to call a dead person as witness they just shout that person's name and they appear
Everyone thinks it Gumillia raising the dead but its actually Luna Hazuki bc this is the most fun she has had in a millenium
She just watches everything from her secret base
If a dead person is found guilty, the entire court has to individually insult said person
Ron Grapple once accused Hansel and Gretel of his murder and won the case bc he was ABC's son and Irina liked him
The graveyard crew were shocked
Nyoze the loop octopus version once cleared up a case about the 7th project MA and never came again
Gammon couldn't process it
Michelle Marlon got MA convicted for not paying child support on two different occasions
Rahab Barisol once emerged out of MA and shit talked Lich
Clarith was accused of not being on the side of justice bc she didn't kill Riliane, coincidentially, Michaela went apeshit in that trial
Clarith also testified that riliane repented which had some ppl surprised
Ma tried to convict gretel for the murder of Mariam, they called her spirit and she literally said "idc"
Behemo makes Ace Attorney references whenever he's there
"That autopsy report is...OUTDATED!"
Nemesis was convicted for the destruction of Levianta(the Magic Kingdom)
Germaine sues Irina for all sorts of shit
No one managed to call on Allen Avadonia
Luna and Sickle kinda argued on this but Luna respected Sickle's decision(basically torturing a 14 year old :/)
They summomed Gallerian multiple times and his response was always "lmao who cares? im evil and i embrace it"
Irina can never trash talk him when he loses trials
Adam managed to get Gammon convicted for identity fraud bc of his past life...somehow
It was total bull and everyone knew that he had bribed Irina
Adam also got Seth convicted for child abuse
Dozens of women sued Venomania and he never won
Not even once
He did win a case against his asshole father though
Muzuri Conchita sued Irina for the curse on his household and he won the case
Elluka Chirclatia sued Nemesis, Mayrana Blossom and Ma for understandable reasons
Pride arc people sued the shit out of Prim, she didn't manage to win ANYTHING
Interestingly, the most ferocious person during her stuff was Banica bc of what she had done to Ney
Lemy sued Gumillia for his murder but the court was so split that they decided to convict neither side and never brought up the case again
It just gave everyone migraines
Adam and Eve tried to sue H&G for their murders but then H&G sued them for neglect, so they called it even
Eve was nearly convicted for the Toragay incident but no one could prove it was her (Nemesis wasn't there and Irina was interested in her defense)
Loki Freezis and Gallerian Marlon had an epic stand off
Kayo Sudou apologised for murdering Mei, Rin and Miku Miroku so they gave her a less harsh sentence which involved only the 3 victims insulting her
No one cared about Kai's death
The Pere Noel members of the 1st iteration(bc most members of the second are all alive until 999) had a LOT of cases
Kaspar tried to make a case against Eve but ignoring that he couldn't prove it was her, no one in the court sympathized with him
Eve and Adam had a shouting match with Seth cheering on from the sidelines until they realized he was their common enemy and ripped him to shreds(figuratively)
Kiril Clockworker nearly got convicted for Pale Noel's stuff, but they couldn't prove anything y'know? He was blamed a little for the catastrophe tho
Catherine Derais once came and she and Rahab were brutal
Brutal for Rahab mostly
All the sinners and the demons sued each other several times
They all got different verdicts each time lol
Sickle is against Luna interfering but doesn't say anything
Eater actually got all heated up in a case against Held once
Arth defended Lich in said case
Lich was so moved
Ney defended herself by saying that Michaela looked like Eve in Michaela's murder trial
No one took it seriously except Hansel and Banica
Nemesis nearly got in trouble for Nyoze's murder but Nyoze(the octo ver) said that her innocence was non-negotiatable
Mira Marlon sued Gallerian for cheating on her and won the case
Nemesis sued Held for not doing shit as a god
Surprisingly Irina, who benefitted the most from his inaction, agreed and he was found guilty
Gumillia was attacked several times for her aiding Elluka Clockworker with crimes and once she claimed that Elluka Clockworker never existed bc she was actually levia behemo, she wasn't elluka chirclatia and ergo elluka clockworker never existed and that Gumillia couldn't have POSSIBLY helped her do crime
The court just took a minute to process this in silence
"I hold nothing BUT contempt for this court." -Germaine, absolutely sick of this bullshit
But that quote could be anyone tbh
This is really long but the ideas just kept coming to me. I find it funny when characters are confronted with their actions, even if it is comedy like this
Honestly Evils Theatre SHOULD have had more trials
it would have been so fun

January's Books
I've been thinking it might be fun to do a month-by-month look at the books I've read and thoughts about them. I read a whopping 12 books in January! This is a mix of winter break energy plus getting lots of Audible credits for Christmas.
Another Time, Another Place by Jodi Taylor
Martyr's Promise by Elizabeth Hunter
A Catalogue of Catastrophe by Jodi Taylor
Paladin's Kiss by Elizabeth Hunter
Once & Future by Cory McCarthy & A.R. Capetta
Sword in the Stars by Cory McCarthy & A.R. Capetta
Doing Time by Jodi Taylor
Hard Time by Jodi Taylor
White Fragility by Dr. Robin DiAngelo
A Psalm of the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers
Saving Time by Jodi Taylor
About Time by Jodi Taylor
I've provided in-depth thoughts below :)
I finished a re-read of Jodi Taylor's Chronicles of St. Mary's series. This is one of my all-time favorites, and it was a joy to read again. Also on Audible, the voice actor who reads them is one of my favorites. Hands down. She does great voices for each of the characters. By the end of the first or second book in the series, she has them down so well that you know who is speaking immediately.
I then read the the 2nd and 3rd novels in the Elemental Covenant series by Elizabeth Hunter. I'm really digging this new series and cannot wait for the next one to release! Elizabeth's world building is amazing, and I have read every single book in her Elemental world. That's 17 books, 8 novellas, and a short story, by the way. Can't recommend her work enough. She also has a few other series that I love like The Irin Chronicles and The Cambio Springs Series.
On the recommendation of my girlfriend, I picked up Once & Future and Sword in the Stars by Cory McCarthy and A.R. Capetta. They were a really fun sci-fi/fantasy YA experience about a reincarnation of the Arthurian legend. Arthur as a lesbian in space plus time travel? It was queer and nerdy and all around wonderful. I loved it!
I then dug back into Jodi Taylor's writing with her spin-off series about the Time Police from the St. Mary's world. The four books were seriously wonderful. I loved learning about each of the main characters. Jodi is also very good at getting me invested to the point that I find myself openly weeping over her stories. I really hope more books come out in that series.
Two more books! I read White Fragility by Dr. Robin DiAngelo. Well... most of it. I still have about an hour of listening. I definitely did a lot of chewing on ideas and reactions to this one. She does well as encapsulating the stumbling blocks to genuine conversations about race because of how White people are socialized. I think it's worth reading as a White person, which is the intended audience, but I think a Black American or other People of Color would find it elementary and waste of time for them.
Finally, a college friend recommended A Psalm of the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers and sent me a Kindle version. It is such a beautiful story about what it means to be alive and worthy. It's a sci-fi book about a future where robots have become sentient and chose to leave humanity behind to learn about the world, and humans have made due without that technology since. A human and a robot meet and go on a journey together learning about one another and life. It hit me right in the feels several times!

Prologue.
Crafting a tale that chronicles a lad's odyssey to journey forth amidst his guiding light's evanescence. Gradually, luminescent fireflies draw near to offer solace in their gentle glow. Shall he rekindle his radiance anew?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter I
Autumn 1990 in Litzberg,
Albeit the æthelinghood churns with longing for prestige and ceaseless activity, love is known to bloom in the most unforeseen places among thelings, as can be witnessed by the cardiothoracic leech, Irina Liserli, who devoted herself tirelessly to her patients in the heal-room of the infirmary, her deft hands and compunctious heart labouring in perfect harmony to safeguard lives.
Across yonder hamlet, in the council chamber of a nearby edifice, the businessman, Simon Thandie, laboureth with vigor, his keen intellect and piercing eyes scrutinizing many parchments. Having acquired sundry enterprises in recent years, including the infirmary wherein Irina selflessly mendeth the ailing hearts of her charges, As wyrd would have it, their paths intermingled, and Simon verily knew in his bosom that Irina was the one for him, beguiled by her grace and poise.
Their love doth burgeon as pilfered glances fill their tumultuous schedules. Despite the paucity of time in each other's presence, their conversations remain be sugared and laden with yearning, promising a future intertwined. In due course, they doth fall mightily into love's embrace and celebrated their union with a stately merriment in 1991, cherishing each other with unwavering ardour with each passing moment. Their love is pure and unbridled, and it only grew in strength as time weaved its tapestry.
Every treasured second was spent in each other's arms, and when their precious love; Reine Alerie and Galleo Marlane, was born, love bloomed into an extraordinary marvel, a testament to the mightiest power of love: to overcome any impediment and engender great marvels.
Their love chronicle stood as a gleaming exemplar of the beauty of unconstrained desire, a force that can rend asunder mighty heights and cause even the most peculiar romances to flourish. Simon and Irina held firm to the belief that their love would glisten and prosper for all eternity as they adored and gazed upon their endearing cherub.

Chapter II
In the midst of a blazing summer's embrace, the Thandie sought refuge within their own seaside villa, where the cerulean waves kissed the shore. The decision was driven by Irine's fervent desire to bring forth her second child in harmony with the sun's descent beyond the horizon.
Unbeknownst to them, her desire would indeed be realized. On the third eve, 9th of August 1995, a male baby came into the world with his fragile digits and was named Galleo Marlane Thandie. Both his parents fostered the wish that he would evolve into a gentleman with valor and fortitude.
𝐽𝑎𝑘𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑎, 𝐼𝑛𝑑𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑎, 𝟸𝟶𝟶𝟶.
Following many years of dwelling in Luxembourg, this family eventually stepped onto Indonesia's soil. Galleo commenced a period of flourishing and advancement in this new environment while forming friendships and acquired a top-notch education.
With his father's influence, Galleo managed to create an automotive enterprise that prospered. As he relished his success, he began to travel extensively across Indonesia.
𝟸𝟶𝟷𝟽, 𝐵𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑢𝑛𝑔.
He was seated at a café, sipping coffee as its fragrant tendrils swirled amidst the mountain breeze. Then all of a sudden, his gaze locked onto a woman, causing his breath to momentarily halt. Enchanted, he found himself falling in love at first sight.
Two years after their introduction, he made a resolute decision to wed the lady he met, Sabrina. However, his elation still remained incomplete, for his wife carried the gift of twin daughters within her womb—a birth fervently anticipated by their family.
Tragically, fate dealt a cruel blow as Sabrina's life was claimed following the birth of their twin daughters. Galleo, shattered and engulfed by the depths of sorrow, tenderly held his wife for the last embrace. Gathering strength, he pledged an eternal protect over their twin daughters, a promise carved from the crucible of his heartache.

Newsy Friday: Irin Chronicles in #KU and a brand new short story!
Newsy Friday: Irin Chronicles in #KU and a brand new short story!
There is NEWS this week! As many of you know, I have mixed feelings about KU or Kindle Unlimited over on Amazon. I think it’s a FANTASTIC thing for readers, but it has mixed blessings for writers who want to be read widely. But while I’m never going to put all my books in KU, I do like doing occasional promotions over there to reach readers in that market. So for the next three months, you can…

This week, we got Between the Richness with Fiddlehead, “Affection & Care” from Philly punks the HIRS Collective, and got to hold hands with PACKS leading up to this week’s release of their debut album Take the Cake. Hurry on the other hand were in love avoidance mode with fake ideas, Flash Trading got paranoid with similar answers, while Faye Webster just kept to herself with her own funny jokes on relationships in the title track off her forthcoming effort. Recommended Listen also ushered in a new era in song reviews with collaborations between familiar kindred spirits Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen as well as something special by Oneohtrix Point Never and ROSALÍA.
Here are the rest of the week’s song and video highlights....
black midi - “Chondromalacia Patella” [Rough Trade]
Tumblr media
“Chondromalacia Patella” is the breakdown of tissue beneath the kneecap, causing pain in the human who is unlucky enough to experience it. In the auditory form, it’s the latest discordant bout between post-rock and jazz noise from black’s midi’s imminent sophomore effort Cavalcade, due out next week. Throughout the listen, there’s fits of impact jarring with softer stretches as vocalist Georgie Greep collects himself from the ground. Reprieve is but temporary, as the stressors and strains from every direction return to wreak havoc on the body in its closing moments. To the audience, it’s mere arts and entertainment.

Japanese Breakfast - “Savage Good Boy” [Dead Oceans]
Tumblr media

“I wanna be a man / I wanna be a savage good boy / I wanna take care of you / When everybody’s gone / I wanna be the one you come home to,” Michelle Zauner sings in the opening moments of Jubilee’s latest single “Savage Good Boy”. Coming on strong with those sentiments might be sweet in a different universe, but the intentions behind those words get typically darker when you consider the context behind this sugarcrushed indie-pop Japanese Breakfast was birthed from the idea of a money-hoarding bro attempting to lure in a mate during post-apocalyptic times with ulterior motives. In the track’s visuals directed by Adam Kolodny, Michael Imperioli plays the part of that asshole.

Lana Del Rey - "Blue Banisters" / "Text Book" / "Wildefire Wildflower" [Interscope / Polydor Records]
Tumblr media
On the trails of this past spring’s swerve back to simplicity that was Chemtrails Over the Country Club, the thought of yet another Lana Del Rey album being released this year either has you elated or in need of a break after surviving another album cycle full of incident from the pop culture magnet. Framed as the reclamation of her own narrative, Del Rey’s 8th full-length effort Blue Banisters arrives on July 3rd, and wastes no time drumming up buzz with three early previews in its title track, “Text Book” and “Wildfire Wildflower”. Norman Fucking Rockwell and Chemtrails... producer Jack Antonoff exits stage left on this round, with Gabe Simon of festival indie rockers Kopecky and modern age rap shaper Mike Dean stepping into his seat. All three drift away from the fingerpicked bluff of her most recent era, favoring vacant-space pianos for verbosity, occasionally deviating from its porcelain surface.

Lucy Dacus - “VBS” [Matador Records]
Tumblr media
Church culture fucks you up, but so can a Lucy Dacus song just the same in repairing the wounds of bearing that cross. “VBS” -- the second single from Dacus’ forthcoming third studio effort Home Video -- chronicles the songwriter’s summer youth in attending vacation Bible schools and being a do-gooder in saving a Slayer-listening campmate’s soul from a life of bad poetry and smoking weed. The song itself feels like a warm stroll through a past version of who she once was and finding herself better off on the other side of the light by letting the darkness touch her. Previous to “VBS”, Dacus also released the gutting live fav “Thumbs” and reconciled old flames on “Hot & Heavy”, and I’m not sure why this site is just getting around to mentioning that now. It's good time going to Hell with her, nonetheless, although Marin Leong's animated visuals for the track look like paradise.

Navy Blue - “Ritual” [Self-released]
Tumblr media

The momentum behind Navy Blue just keeps going. In the past year, the Brooklyn underground rapper, skater and fashion model made a breakthrough with his listmaking debut album Àdá Irin, began 2021 with another recommended effort in Song of Sage: Post Panic, and has collaborated alongside the Alchemist and Earl Sweatshirt on the cut “Nobles” as well as produced his peer AKAI SOLO’s latest True Sky. Add another album which Sage Elsesser just dropped without any notice, as his latest work Navy’s Reprise is available now exclusively on his website. The effort was produced by Navy Blue himself, Malik Abdul-Rahmaan, Playa Haze, Like, Alexander Spit, Evidence, Stoney Willis, Theravada, Laron, and Jacob Rochester, and mixed by Zeroh. Visual collaborator constant Ryosuke Tanzawa directed the loft lit video for its leadoff single “Ritual” that equally turns toward shimmering production between the poetic bars.

Squid - “Pamphlets” [Warp]
Tumblr media
Avant-post-punk collective Squid just released their debut album Bright Green Field two weeks ago, and we’ll have more words on that soon enough, but in the meantime, they’ve released a music video for one of its most beguiling standouts, the politically-popped freakout “Pamphlets”. Directed by Raman Djafari with character animation by Barney Abrahams, the watch traverses across an eight-minute odyssey of hyperreal animation. Djafari describes it as “a meditation on the feeling of being unfit, unlovable, not compatible and the manic anxiety and stress that this results in.” The flurry of human creatures and insects we met along the way very much alter perceptions of reality through the window into Squid’s outside world.

2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/CDahaStnqEO/?utm_medium=tumblr

I love when I hear “Reshon”. It gives me the same vibes when I hear shellan. I’ve been waiting for Renata’s story. Irin Chronicles have some of my favorite book covers. The plot is also really intriguing. The Scribe, book 1, is sometimes a kindle freebie. Give it a shot if you haven’t yet! #irinchronicles #elizabethhunter #thestorm #paranormalromance #urbanfantasy #romancebooks #nephilim #tattoos https://www.instagram.com/p/CH_hDGTgTkA/?igshid=c5pj5402o0ta
