“Many say the moon is closer to the dead.”
This is COLOR OF A MIRROR, my debut novel with an original, dark ambient soundtrack by composer Josh McCausland to go along with it.
Written, designed, and published by me, it’s the culmination of years of work, and it’s exactly the story I wanted to tell. It’s not loud or bombastic, but rather a cerebral, slow-burn cyberpunk narrative lingering on themes of fame, paranoia, religion, and technology. If you’re a fan of the brooding futures of William Gibson, Blade Runner, or anything with a mood like the movie Drive, I think you’ll find something to love here.
Available exclusively on my website, it comes in limited edition deluxe-hardcover, softcover, and e-book. (And if you’re a vinyl lover, the soundtrack is pressed in 180g Moondust White; also available on my site.)
Welcome to the Dive. Hope to see you around.

Available now for pre-order: Haze Cave by Pigao! We are so excited to be publishing this stunning book, which beautifully captures the dislocation of modern China.
Image description: Pages of the comic showing a couple driving along one of Beijing's massive highways. Gazing out the window at the office buildings, one character wonders at how little of the city she is able to understand.

Oh god, February 29th is less than ten days away...
I've been hustling to get the print, epub, and Free PDF versions done, and get the sales post written up, so much so that I forgot to warn everyone that the drop is coming :D The Royals And The Ramblers, the latest volume in the Shivadh Romances, will go up for sale at 10am Central time on February 29th!
What are the Shivadh Romances? Well:
Askazer-Shivadlakia is “the little country by the sea” — a coastal micronation perched between France and Italy, with Europe’s only Jewish royal family and a distinctly queer-friendly culture. The irreverent but earnest Shivadh people have recently elected a new king, Gregory III, and the Shivadh romances follow him, his extended family, and their friends and partners as they manage love, politics, and an ever-expanding social circle.
And what is The Royals And The Ramblers about?
It's an exciting time for the Shivadh royal family! Gregory III, king of Askazer-Shivadlakia, is marrying kitschy TV chef Eddie Rambler…three times. There's the beach party in California, a private wedding for family in Europe, and a big formal blowout for everyone in Askazer-Shivadlakia to celebrate. But that's not all -- Gregory and Eddie have asked Eddie's sister, Monday, to serve as a surrogate for a royal baby, and that means Monday has to figure out life in Askazer-Shivadlakia, along with determining where she stands with her one-time fling and now full-time friend Georgie, the royal head of security.
Gregory's friends Alanna and Jerry are trying to sort out their whirlwind romance, his father Michaelis is navigating a second love and return to fatherhood with partner Jes and Jes's son Noah -- and then there's Ioanna, the bright young girl Gregory catches ditching school to watch him lead Parliament, who might need a couple of dads as much as Gregory and Eddie want a couple of kids.
It's a year for everyone to learn new roles, find surprising ways to keep growing up, and, as always, keep that irreverent Shivadh sense of humor, whether they're a Royal or a Rambler....
I'll be making a sales post with all the links here, and you can always find the latest news also at my author website. And as always I'll be offering signed bookplates for print versions as a fundraiser, this time supporting Planned Parenthood. Keep your eyes peeled!

The fanfiction/indie story Emmy awards
Tumblr media
I saw a thing on Pinterest once. They were talking about how books should have awards too, and how it would be so much more fun than the actual award thing.
What if - fanfiction award things. Good recommendations for people, different classifications for each fandom, ways for fanfiction to get recognized because they make amazing things for free.
And indie published things are amazing (like webcomics and such and such) but things that aren't produced by companies just.. don't get recognized.
And I think that it would be fun to see all the recommendations and have underrated works of art get the recognition they deserve, because the larger companies can make garbage and yet these people make these wonderful things that don't get the recognition they deserve.

This month in Bubbles Magazine you can find a roundtable discussion on underground comics in China! Orion and Xinmei from PS were joined by Olga and Qiliq from O.Q and Pigao from Yan Shu to discuss how the scene has been changing over the past few years. It's a pleasure to be part of Bubbles — an ongoing comics-focused zine that is literally bursting with content.
Image description: An interior spread of Bubbles, and a spread of the discussion. The zine is black and white, and the interior pages are full, almost all the way to the edges of the page, with text.

I cannot find clear answers anywhere, and I've seen you use Lulu. I'm closeted and write lgbt+ stories, I've chosen my new name and would like to use it when sharing stories, I'd rather my legal name does not go around attached to them. Could I sign up with my chosen name, even if it's still no more than a pseudonym? I would connect PayPal to Lulu as the payee, which does have my legal name, but I could always pretend it's a friend...
It's been a while since I set mine up, but I'm pretty sure that while your legal name doesn't have to be public on Lulu anywhere, they do need to have it for tax and payment purposes.
My legal name is not Sam Starbuck. It's what's on the Lulu account as both author and publisher, and it's attached to all my books; as far as I'm aware my legal name is not visible to site patrons. So if all you're concerned about is putting a pen name or chosen name on your books, you're good -- your legal name won't be visible to your buyers.
However, when you upload a book for publishing, Lulu wants a "payee" name on the back end. You can have more than one of these; for example if I wanted to publish with a coauthor, I could set the "payee name" to 50% me and 50% them. Each payee name has to match the name on the paypal account where that person is receiving payments from Lulu. It also has to match a legal name for tax purposes (I do get a tax document from Lulu with my royalties listed each year) although I'm like 99% sure they didn't want any documentation, like I didn't have to upload a driver's license. I've had my account for over 10 years though so that may have changed.
So as long as you're okay with Lulu having your legal name for payment purposes, you can put whatever name you want on your account -- and even though I'm signed up as Sam Starbuck, like that's my username on the site, I can also put any name I want on any individual book, as long as the payee name on the back end is the legal name of the payee.
Hope this helps! I recommend for research purposes that you try signing up for an account with your pseud/chosen name and see how far you get before it wants any legal name info, that will help clarify I think. But yeah, your payee/legal name isn't visible on the site unless that's how you choose to be identified.

COLOR OF A MIRROR
Back when the book was just press sheets.
One thing I’m super excited about with this book is that instead of chapter titles, I created abstract ideograms that reflect the stage of the story/characters in that chapter. Hopefully as you’re reading, you feel how the chapter pairs with the image.
Again, if you’re looking for something a little bit different or out of the ordinary this Black Friday/Cyber(punk) Monday weekend, the book is out now, and you can support independent publishing by ordering direct from my site!

I did a silly little thing and wrote a book y’all.
*BLURB*
All of the best parts of me died long ago. Now I live only for my revenge. I've been a soldier for nearly a decade, ever since I was driven from my home for committing an unforgivable sin. Now I've been summoned back to Vale to take my rightful place as king. Forced to smile in the faces of those who betrayed me. Haunted by memories of a past love. Tempted by a handsome knight who wields a sword in defense of my enemy. I will have my vengeance.
