HAPPY NISIOISIN's & Zaregoto's 22nd anniversary!

On February 5th, 2002, Nisio made his debut with Zaregoto: Kubikiri Cycle. People know him for the Monogatari Series, but he's written so many other emotional works Please go check them out! (Yes, even if you hated Monogatari)

I truly believe that there's something for everyone in Nisio's works. He writes characters in a way that shows he has a deep emotional understanding of what it means to be living through hardships & he never does so cheaply, it's clear he wants them to be understood. In fact, in his "autobiographical" work "Imperfect Girl" he declares that he writes for those who aren't usually represented, i.e. those with trauma, the depressed, the losers, the out of place, and so many others This man has written over 100+ books. Hell, one of the best books I've ever read, Zaregoto vol. 2: Kubishime Romanticist, was written in only 3 days. There's bound to be something you'll like from his works I always recommend that people read Zaregoto, but if novels aren't your thing I'd strongly suggest Medaka Box. It's a manga that's stuck with me deeply throughout the years, on the surface it's about "the powerful", "the normal", and "the losers" but it ends up being so much more

If fanservice is something you hate, I highly recommend his Katanagatari, Zaregoto, and Okitegami Kyouko series specifically. Okitegami Kyouko even has a wonderful live action TV show!

cops are a really glaring issue with detective fiction, but i really appreciate how Nisioisin has totally sidestepped the issue in his writing, and in fact, even sometimes puts cops in a negative light

in Zaregoto, Ii doesn't work with cops. he's not even a detective, just a guy with bad luck, but despite being constantly surrounded by death and murder, he rarely deals with authority to any degree. whenever cops appear, it's briefly, and they have a negligible effect on the plot

in Boukyaku Tantei, Kyouko is a more traditional private detective, and in fiction, those nearly always find themselves involved with cops, yet every one of her cases that we see is brought to her by Yasusuke. cops exist in her cases, but once again, they have little effect on the story itself

Bishounen Tanteidan is especially interesting for this, tho, because here, authority is positioned explicitly as in the negative. there is a grand conspiracy surrounding the cast, and to whatever degree that authority, or adults, which the series sees as hand in hand, they are defending that nebulous whatever

but i think the work that's most fascinating for Nisioisin's view of cops isn't any of his detective works, but Monogatari. both of the parents in the Araragi household are cops, and we can clearly see the impact that has had on the family. all three kids developed a sense of justice from their parents, one that told them they should do right. Koyomi had this sense of justice shattered, but Karen and Tsukihi supposedly still stand strongly by them

but that's not totally the case, either. first of all, Karen and Tsukihi act as vigilantes, and they specifically mention that they don't work with cops. this could just be an act of childish rebellion, considering their parents, but they still seem to admire them, so that's not entirely it. but Tsukihi's sense of justice is frivolous, much like everything else about her, while Karen's justice is a lie. it feels unlikely that either of them would ever go on to become cops like their parents

the Araragi parents rarely get involved in story. their mom appears in Tsubasa Tiger, but her choice of career is irrelevant to her role there. the one time it's relevant is with Sodachi, and that feels most damning. they can't save her from her abusive life. they should be the saviors in her life, that's literally what cops are supposed to do, but police are ineffective as a solution to abuse. they intervene and despite that, nothing changes. her life only continues to get worse until she's turned over to the state, who continue to fail her on every level

Imperfect Girl ends with U being turned over to the police, which transitions to the epilogue, and when we see her next, she's turned her life around, which in theory seems like a reverse of what happened with Sodachi. U has become a child of the state, she's been turned over to authority, and she turned out fine, but in this case, it doesn't feel like the cops mean anything here other than that they exist. the narrator was the important one in turning her life around. even in a case where cops did an objective good, it's a minor note, and it's ultimately ineffective compared to

i can't claim to know Nisioisin's politics just from his writing, especially when his series vary so wildly in tone and direction, but from looking at all of this, i get the sense that he's hesitant to portray cops as a universal good. this all makes for a noticeable trend in his writing which i really appreciate

to be clear, I think Rose Tyler being an often-selfish character is great. I think it's great because real women are selfish. Real women get petty. Real women hear their ex boyfriend say he's going out with a mutual acquaintance and get unfairly jealous and real women then say things like "she's a bit big" when they shouldn't and they have no right. Real women can be monsters, and Rose Tyler is relatable and I love how she is written and I love her, thanks for listening

Currently thinking about how Touga is terrible but he's also a teenage abuse victim who sees becoming like his abuser as the only way to reclaim some modicum of power and thus agency. And Saionji loving him so profoundly that he arguably comes back into Ohtori because of him, but having no tools to express that love in any healthy way, both due to his own emotional ineptitude and buying into the most surface level trappings of toxic masculinity (physical domination, anger, violence, competition) AND due to not knowing what to do to ever reach Touga. Touga is in a way a parallel to Anthy, in that they're in a sense Akio's longest victims, but the way the system everyone is in convinces Touga that the poison he's swallowing is what props him up above other victims, particularly women, means he's happy to remain a cog in the carousel.

the thing i really do like about lena from ducktales is

she's a teen character who's been through a Lot. and still is a Lot

and her friends? they like her like that

she's still someone who'll hide how she's having terrifying nightmares of her evil aunt taking control of her, up to the point she accidentally drags her friends into a dreamverse and almost succumbs to said evil aunt because she's just so TIRED of trying to NOT be like her

she's a big sister now, adopted by violet and the two best dads, and she's super supportive- but her way of helping violet is by teaching her to insult and put down her competition- their Friend- which gets violet into some troubles later on

she's the kind of friend who stops an attack at huey by stopping TIME, pulling them both in his mind- and then opening the door in his mind he told her Not To, unleashing a feral furious side of him- encouraging him to do that in REAL life, cause a mess! Be a bit of a monster! Go wreck someone for once!!!

she's the bestie who sees webby's newly discovered clone sisters cutting a string between her picture and webby's, and blasts said clone twin with a magic attack

Reformed isn't the word for lena, is what im saying.

She's got the same traits as ever- they're just barely starting to be redirected

now she's also someone who dragged webby's granny out of danger (while alone with no witnesses) even though said granny didn't approve of her, basically said she thought lena had no future, and had been getting in the way of lena's plans for freedom and escape from her own evil aunt

lena was never evil. she doesn't need redemption

chances to BE HERSELF is what she needed, and it's what she GETS

she's jumping down a giant shark monster to save webby- her worst nightmare is webby dying- she kinda dies herself trying to save webby

she's the cool teen making color coordinated friendship bracelets for all her new buddies-

she's the big sis waving flags and cheering violet on, dissing on their friends for her, tackle hugging her (getting such a smile out of violet when she does), and always reaching out to her when things get dangerous

she's the friend who's been through it looking at huey's worst side, the part of him he's scared and ashamed of, telling him dude that is COOL- and she's also spending time and magic letting him run through as many redos as he wants, the one who put out a hand in the nick of time to save him the first place

she's coming to get webby after their first real fight, physically straining to keep a spell up long enough to reach her, and she's got friendship bracelets for webby's formally evil clone sisters too, catching them in her magic and safely carrying them along with her own little sister

like, she does learn to trust in friendship. she learns she wants to try being a better friend too

but she doesn't have to turn into someone ELSE to do it!

and her friends wouldn't want her to, anyway

back on my bullshit:

it would have been really cool if Fitz had gone to the forbidden cities to find Keefe after he ran away, bc Sophie was too busy at home and Fitz didn't want to be around her (after their breakup). He's arguably the most well versed in the human world aside from Sophie and a few black swan members...

all I'm saying is that I would read that book in a heartbeat. It would also have the potential to repair Keefe and Fitz's bond.
