you know that thing where like men will wear dresses or be feminine for a gimmick or as a trend etc which is all well and good but then theres people who can only handle seeing a man in a dress as a gimmick or as like a Thing where it's not casual or an everyday thing like they can only handle it when its specifically for a Bit bc they could never take a man just casually in a dress as anything casual, it'd be an affront to them for you to think a man in a dress can be anything but a gimmick so if you try to do it casually you're insane, and if you do it as a bit you are agreeing with them (youre not but they think you are). anyway this is how people are with genderfluid characters they can never just exist and casually be genderfluid they Have to be some sort of shapeshifting or weird over the top mystical being and it has to be a gimmick or it has to fit their persona or something for you to even consider them genderfluid because nobody could possibly casually be that without it being some sort of set piece for a punchline. how often do u see people even hc characters as genderfluid just cus. yknow.

recently, i’ve been thinking about what a 100% social link/confidant run is like from the perspective of the persona protagonists, rather than the player. i’ve always been a sucker for thinking about the type of narrative created by a person’s gameplay choices (it can be so fun and deep) so!! i wrote this analysis / musing.

some notes before we start: this was written with the lens of persona 3 being the most recent game i played- but the concepts are applicable to the p4/p5 protagonists as well! no spoilers for any of the games are mentioned; this is moreso a general discussion of ludonarrative dissonance with the game mechanics and narrative and how it makes for fun angst (ft. personal interpretation).

the framework: game mechanics

in all of the games, the social link system’s existence coincides with the social stats mechanic. certain social links require a specific set of stats in order to initiate it, or surpass a certain rank. each game has around 20 of these- each of which represent the major arcana (+ some bonuses, e.g. aeon / jester / faith / councilor).

for any players going for a 100% social link run, this basically requires each social stat to be maxed out. anyone who’s followed a guide for a 100% run would know that the beginning of the game tends to be very “strict” with how time can be used, most of which involves getting the stats raised as soon as possible.

outside of characterization and worldbuilding, completing social links are incentivized for a variety of gameplay reasons. so how could this completionist play style affect the protagonists?

prioritizing social stats over everything else: a general view

regardless of which protagonist you want to put under a petri dish, with a 100% run, you’re essentially asking the protagonist to form amicable bonds with 20 or so people, give or take. granted, not everyone becomes adjoined to the hip to the protagonist.

personally, i feel that forming 20 different bonds over the course of a year would be rather strenuous. during these 100% runs, the protagonists may feel that they’re spreading themselves thin trying to dedicate their resources to multiple different people as well as raising their “social stats.” i find the implications that this has on said bonds is so, utterly fascinating.

while this isn’t reflected in the game and would be better represented within a fic, i find it difficult to believe that this type of behavior doesn’t have any ramifications on the quality of the protagonist’s closer relationships (or their self-image, for that matter).

just… imagine calling one of your close friends but then they consistently give responses along the lines of “lmao sorry i’m busy doing other things,” and they rarely make the time of day for you. how would you feel? gameplay-wise, this deterioration of the relationship is best represented in persona 3 with social links reversing if you haven’t spent time with them in awhile.

part of my fascination with this concept is influenced by my own experiences. trying to maintain so many relationships can be difficult to keep up with and it quickly gets overwhelming (see dunbar’s number for more information). jumping between so many people also makes it difficult to focus on a few relationships meaningfully- meaning that relationships may be limited to being simple pleasantries. even then, ‘successfully’ keeping every relationship satisfying comes at the cost of being unable to pursue your own development and interests.

overall, i think that trying to do so many things ends up lowering the quality of the relationship(s) involved, especially when you also consider the fatigue from going to school as well as fighting shadows.

playing the therapist friend / listening role: a general view

another aspect of the 100% run that i think about is how the protagonists rarely open up to other people. a good chunk of SLs follow a storyline of the protagonist acting as a therapist friend/helping the other person through one central issue. some SLs are an exception to this and have a more casual “we’re just hanging out vibe.”

basically, SLs tend to be weighted toward the other character’s growth, moreso than the protagonist’s (which is handled by the main story). that said, the idea of mostly playing a listening role across most of your relationships and not having many that you feel comfortable to speak freely about your own stuff… feels really unbalanced and unhealthy?

i do think that part of the lack of “input” can be attributed to the silent-protagonist approach taken in the games (which is a whole ‘nother topic). but!! i find that each protagonist’s options, while limited, are fun to think about! some of the traits and interpretations i’ve seen for the differing protags, to name a few, include:

being afraid to open up / get attached and keeping people at arm’s distance as a result

needing to be around other people, even if it’s just listening them, to distract from their own struggles / pretend nothing’s wrong with them

enjoying helping others, being a good and careful listener who can provide an appropriate and helpful response

the willingness to prioritize others over themselves; a lack of self-preservation

compulsive people pleasing

at its worst, the lack of “protagonist talking” or equal reciprocation in response could be misinterpreted by the other person as disinterest (like they’re talking to a wall). alternatively- the lack of “personal tidbits” could be taken as, “you don’t trust me enough to be able to open up, huh.” and i just think that seeing this in a fic would be the biggest shitshow ever (and i would read that).

concluding thoughts:

overall, i feel that the protagonists taking a predominantly listening approach to several relationships at once can lead to compassion fatigue and general burnout. the protagonists are rarely at the receiving end of being listened to and/or having their issues worked through… and that’s kind of sad?

while the 100% social link run can provide great power to any persona fusions (and other cool battle abilities + hijinks)... i ultimately think that there’d be a lot of mental strain that would make achieving this much more difficult when you take a narrative-emphasized approach.

i do realize that it is possible to see the general vibe of this post as “100% social link is bad,” but like… there’s something i find really appealing about the messiness of attempting to manage so many relations at once- only to fall short in several of them and attempting to salvage the last bits of their sanity. when you think about the complications of the 100% SL run from the shoes of the protagonist… yeah!! that’s the good shit!

anyways! if anyone knows of any fics with this kinda vibe for the p3/4/5 protags… feel free to drop it in my askbox… i like them all VERY much :3c… and if this raised any food for thought- i’d be equally honored! let the protags go through shit i wanna see their emotions and coping mechanisms damn it! 👏

i saw your post about the final zoom out shot at the end of ds9 when i was only like halfway through the show and just kinda. absorbed it and didn't react but then when i finished the show for the first time and it happened i just started bawling uncontrollably. like i was truly inconsolable for almost an hour and every time i think of that shot i cry a little bit

oh man this ask takes me right back 🥲 it really is like that. i dont even really know how to put it into words but something about watching the station—our temporary home, our friend even—disappear into the vastness of space, knowing the show is over and we’ll never get to see it again, or be there again….. knowing that we’re leaving it all behind after such an incredible story and adventure….. it is a BRUTAL tear-jerker for real. literally no other star trek show ending is like it, and i think thats maybe because no other star trek show IS like it. its just an absolutely beautiful final shot that the show 100% earned and god if it doesnt get me every single time

okay, just gonna say this now before i start this post: i have absolutely no problems with alternate universes, go ham with them, go wild, you can have fun, etcetc, they're called alternate universes for a reason, after all

however. HOWEVER.

i have a problem when people say something should have happened in canon, when canon itself disproves or goes against whatever these people want

the reason why im bringing this up?

the whole thing with how some people keep saying mirabel should have [insert the usual things people say here, hate, slap, punch, left, get revenge, etc, take your pick, there's unfortunately a lot to choose from] the family. in the canon movie.

again, i have no problem with alternate universes and seeing them in fanfics or whatever, you do you, could be interesting to see even

but when you start saying this should have happened in canon, its just. no. no.

god, it just frustrates me so much whenever i see these posts and comments, the ones that said she should have gone evil or villain or hate the family and all that stuff

because mirabel herself loves her family. she literally said it outright in the movie!!! its not in her personality and character to just go against them and hate them and want revenge. there will be hurt and hesitance and some resentment after everything she'd gone through, yes, but outright hate to the point where she'll hurt them?? absolutely not.

not with her character, her love and empathy and understanding, the traits we see her show in the movie.

like my friend once said: mirabel "he loved this family. i love this family. we all love this family" would NEVER hurt her family

say it louder for the people at the back!!

and thats not all i want to rant about tbh...the real kicker on this one?

whenever this statement is added on top of it all: "if i were mirabel—"

well, news flash people who keep saying these things, mirabel isnt you. mirabel is her own character who has her own experiences and her own feelings. maybe you'll be able to relate to her, especially with similar experiences, but that doesn't mean you can just copy and paste your own feelings onto her and say this is what she should have done in canon because thats what i would have done!!

we all project onto our favorite characters in various ways, which is completely fine, go at it and definitely not surprising for a story about family issues, but when you start to project so much that you throw away the character's actual personality and characterization in favor of said projection? yeah...no.

thats not mirabel madrigal anymore, that's a completely new character...or dare i say, a self-insert for some people... 💀:////

yeah, im just so frustrated with this AAAAAAA 😭

but anyway yes.

thats it, really. again, AUs are absolutely fine but if someone starts yapping about how canon should have [insert whatever those people keep saying here] instead while disregarding actual canon and proper characters and personalities, im going to become violent

Okay i dont often talk about mlp aus on here but I have THOUGHTS relating to mlp au for one piece, namely the idea of luffy being an alicorn but also some other headcanons so im gonna put em all in here

Okay so- luffy becomes an alicorn similar to twilight but *post* timeskip (it happens during the 2 years with rayleigh) because he learns how to use his conquerer’s haki and conquerer’s haki is just- SO alicorn coded okay???? Also it would be hilarious if post timeskip he shows up and his whole crew is like “WHAT THE FUCK SINCE WHEN ARE YOU AN ALICORN?!”

Also, side tangent, but- luffy is a blank flank. He *wants* to be king of the pirates, sure, but he isnt yet. Hes ded set on doing it though and doesnt care if he gets his cutie mark or not. Show ends with him finally getting his cutie mark as pirate king, hes the only one other than chopper without one i just think thats a neat headcanon

Also, everyone’s pony races cause- i cant NOT put my heacanons for that here (gonna try and foxus on the strawhats but there are some non strawhats in here)

Luffy: earth pony (becomes alicorn through Rayleigh)

rant post about being disabled. also brief mention of sexual stuff i guess

i hate that ive had so much taken from me because of my disablities like.

covid has given me permanent lung and throat damage, making it very difficult if not impossible to do voice training in either direction, so im permanently stuck sounding like a 12 y/o (not helpful when im sending voice notes to my boyfriend and trying to be sexy!!). it also makes it extremely hard to do physical activity because. lung damnage :(. like i do more than i would normally because i walk with my friend(? idk im not sure she likes me. ok off topic anyways. wait wtf do i mean off topic this is MY rant post. fuck you.) between periods but its worth seeing them. and oh my god. its exhausting and painful.

i also have arthiritis and elhers danlose or whatever the fuck it is i cant be bothered to check the spelling on either of those. and those both make my life a living hell.

i could handle any one or two of these fine but all together just makes everything suck even more than it already does.

1 who is the first artist you remember loving?

I was big into of monsters and men as a kid in addition to all the usual tumblr grunge suspects. If we go back even earlier to like 8 years old my vocaloid girlies <33333

Thats IA and gumi (i wasnt into miku because she wasnt like so #me . I was already developing the alternative agenda at 8. I mean i liked her and rin and len just fine but these two were like THE ones for me). Okay ovviously theyre not “artists” but i wasnt deliberately looking for who made what song i just liked their looks and sound and the type of music people made them sing. Wait im gonna use this as an excuse to link stuff

THIS ia track (six trillion years and one night story) is still a really good blend of traditional japanese scales and jpop intensity and was exactly the kind of grimdark headbanger kid me liked. The part that goes If this world could just be me and you and if everyone else would just disappear. that part will get me eternally. Also i realised i probably also liked these two because theyve actually got pretty realistic voices. Childhood blues by gumi has a really nice video with art that i used to be obsessed with

This is really a tangent but also i thought about vocaloid producers that i liked also and seriously neru was huge for suicidecore rock songs . Shockingly his stuff that i like is actually kind of recent like 2017? But in my opinion it was easier to get into specific vocaloid artists as a kid cause they had videos on youtube and violent beats so you could binge a whole discography as an easily bored young person . Anyway neru stuff is typically steeped in that Japanese high school melancholia, you know, school uniforms, blank expressions, desks flying everywhere. I really liked this one its pertinent for when youre in your very early preteens/teens and you dont like doing homework and youre convinced youre an evil and wicked human being

3 who is the artist you put on to make you smile?

LOVEEEE dominic fike and always gets me in a good mood. His songs have palpable swag even in purely audio format. Quality cuts that havent failed to improve my mood yet

4 which song rips your heart out?

Oh rips heart out is a very specific feeling and i kind of want to say erm that part in legally blonde from legally blonde the musical when she says some girls fight hard some face the trial some girls were just meant to smile. All my other sad songs are more of an ache kind of feel. Ok, so I was just going to wait until I finished mists of celeste volume one to leave a message. But omg. I'm reading on ao3 and I'm on chapter 26. I KNEW IT I KNEW IT OMG. Kakdjdkdk

First of all, your writing really captivated me since the very beginning. Wait. Wait. I'm getting ahead of myself. So, actually I made an ateez tumblr so I could start to interact on tumblr (I love tumblr, truly) and I saw that there are some writers and I actually really love writings where people analyze other people. Maybe analyze is too harsh. But like imagines and stuff, I realized a lot of people elsewhere tend to see the members one dimensionally. But on tumblr, there are tons of people who seem to "read" the members really well. Wait this is going off on a tangent. ANYWAYS, I came across a post putting mists of celeste as one of the first that you must read. I saw how many parts that had and was very daunted. But I came across it on ao3 and saw volume was finished, so I was like. Eh, might as well. Jsjkjds I am in love with this fic.

I love fics where there is just enough mystery and just enough pieces to make the reader put things together and kskfskks I love it. I love how y/n and seonghwa are the same. I KNEW IT OMG and seonghwa being this just makes sense. It. Just. Makes. Sense. Ok. Bye!

perhaps that's how the first "i love you" is blurted out, in the dead of night, the words forgotten in the morning by both parties, but the feeling remaining just as strong...

I stopped being a Harry fan this year. I can’t stand what has become of him. The way he behaved during the pandemic, the tour dates he never bothered to update us on, the sheer arrogance of not thanking your fans after a Grammy win, the laughable way he never answers anything while getting labeled as ‘king’, the awful fashion he tries to pass as groundbreaking, the mega shady industry people he picks around him and even insert himself into their families, the way he can’t even bring himself to engage with fans even in cute promo videos, the way he never smiles anymore in fan pics ever since he made it big with fl, the way he obviously cheated with his movie director without giving a damn about the father of the children who was clearly in the dark. it makes me sad but honestly..whatever. I look at him now and honestly all I see is an empty LA dude who is not being legit and trying to make me give him my money. Gemma is annoying af and always was. Something about him has changed a lot and you can even see it in his live performances. I don’t feel the same alive fulfilled honest lovely energy he once had. He sold out

however, its also annoying that so many people DO call him out and DO have MANY valid reasons for not liking him, thinking he’s a bad person, saying he doesn’t care abt his fans (covid merch, covid concerts, fucking google camp, obvious cash grab shitty overpriced merch, surrounding himself with objectively shitty ppl [azoffs + olivia], & SO many more that i cant even think of off the top of my head) & yet the majority of harries would rather die than admit he’s ever done anything wrong! you can go into detail about any number of the things he’s done and his favs will just argue that whatever he’s done is 1) not actually even that bad 2) not his fault & its actually his management team that's to blame or 3) they just deflect and attack your fav instead even tho that has nothing to do with the argument

its just really annoying that instead of explaining why i don’t like him, most of the time its just easier to go “oh i think he just has bad vibes he seems like an asshole i just dont like him” rather than going into detail because no one can argue with that! no one can argue if you’re just like “oh idk just because”!!! & i’d rather do that than start an insufferable argument with an insufferable person lmao

OH HI THANK YOU I just had. to take a full week to process this ask and have a good cry because it just means so much to me that you liked that aspect of my art and could relate to it so deeply hhrjhf.

I feel like there would be such a good potential for cultures mingling and flourishing together in an hypothetical post-canon world finally at peace (I know it's maybe too much wishful thinking but it would have been so amazing to see) and I really wanted to project that on the gaang kids (especially the kataang babies because COME ON. Their parents are the definition of being in love and caring deeply about each other and the respective backgrounds - especially since both of their cultures have been wiped out by the fire nation - so I feel like they would make absolutely sure both of their traditions would be celebrated in their home and yeah. sorry for the tangent and thank you so much again for your nice words! <333)
