Sick Time HCs

Hello, guess who was sick for the whole day prior. This mod, haha- (coughs)

Since I had received multiple Headcanon requests for this topic but different characters I decided to just wrap it into one post I hope you all don’t mind. Regardless, please enjoy~

Sick Day

Kengo

~“Okay…” Kengo breathed as you two stared one another down. You gripped your sword as tight as you could and steadied your breathing as you were anticipating his next move. Kengo moved with impressive speed but you parried his punch with your blade. However it was just a feint as Kengo’s true intention was to strike you from the side. Due to your sluggish movements and hazy vision he completely blind sided you and sent you spiraling on the ground. You coughed and wheezed as you struggled to pick yourself back up. Kengo quickly caught on and rushed over. “Hey, what’s the matter!?” You tried to tell him you were fine but you coughed again, this time from your sickness. “I knew somethin’ was off.” You sniffled a bit and sneezed in response which finally gave you away. “You’re sick ain’tcha?” You grimaced. “Yep. C’mere.” Kengo suddenly picked you up carrying you bridal style. You tried to argue that you could walk on your own just fine. Silently Kengo lifted your shirt which you would have raised an opinion about but he revealed the bruise he left on you given your weakened state. You couldn’t really hide it anymore at that point so you fell silent and couldn’t look him in the eyes with shame. “I’ll take you, got that?”

~Much to your displeasure he carried you all the way back to your room cradled in his arms. It was a little embarrassing but you were relieved none of your other friends saw you. Once you were back in your bed you did your best to feign wellness and attempted to shoo Kengo away. “What’s with you? There’s no way you’re alright!” You tried to argue that you fine once more but a sneeze prevented you from doing so. “See?” You grumbled with embarrassment. You didn’t like the idea on appearing so vulnerable in front of your partner when he relies on you. “What’re you talkin’ about? You’re just sick, that’s all.” Still, it was embarrassing to get sick when it seems Kengo almost never gets sick. “Yeah I’m pretty healthy year round and- wait, no.” Kengo snapped his attention at you. “I won’t think you’re weak. Promise.” You crossed your arms in defeat and sighed. “Now, what do you do when you get sick…” He pondered aloud. “Uh, right.” Kengo tossed your covers over you. “Stay in these, I’ll be right back!” First he insisted on staying, then he leaves!? “It’ll just take a second.” With that you were alone like you initially wanted. You breathed out a sigh while you reflected back on earlier. You could’ve been a little nicer and gave him a bit of a heads up that you weren’t in fighting form today. Then again you can’t let yourself get sick so easily. Everyone depends on you and you can’t rest while everyone else does the heavy lifting. You just wanna do your part…

~Your thoughts were interrupted abruptly by Kengo swinging the door open. He seemed to have extra blankets for you and what looked to be bottled water. “I’m back!” He declared happily. “Shiro told me that when someone gets sick you’re supposed to keep em warm and hydrated! Yep, that’s what he said!” You asked if he told Shiro while you were concerned your cover was blown. “Nah, cuz then he would get all fussy over you. So… you’re my little secret. Well, our little secret but… uh…” Kengo scratched the back of his head while you both breathed a sigh of relief and looked at him with a bit of contempt. “Hey, what’s with the dirty look for? I thought you didn’t want him fussin’. That’s why I didn’t tell him.” You let loose another cough as your throat begins to feel irritated and you instead thanked him for doing all of that. “No prob!” He chuckled. “But, I don’t think these sheets are gonna keep you warm.” Before you could ask what he meant, Kengo slipped out of his sandals and got into your bed with you. You told him that someone might get the wrong idea or he could get sick himself. “Hmm, nope. I locked the door (I think) and I’m pretty good at stuff like this.” While you two were wrapped under the same blankets you could feel how warm your partner really was. You shivered and subconsciously scooted closer to him until your bodies were pressed against one another. You comment on how pleasant his body heat is and how the cold seemingly disappeared. “Thanks, but… you’re really burning up. Try to drink some water and relax, ‘kay?” You did so and the cold drink felt refreshing for a change, but even then you shivered which Kengo laughed at.

Wakan Tanka

~You couldn’t hide anything from Wakan Tanka. Not a thing in the world he couldn’t see past. “Hey, you feeling alright?” You tried to play it off as a little head cold and that it wouldn’t interrupt your planned day out but you couldn’t hold back a serious cough that left your throat feeling scratchy. There was no denying the chills you were starting to develop either as you started to shiver in your jacket. “You don’t look that well.” He commented. “I think something happened like this before to my Gunzo. I believe the instructors said there was an illness going around… it seems you’ve caught it, my summoner.” You were dreading the prospect but couldn’t deny that to be the case as your chills began to escalate and you letting out a comment on how cold it was. Wakan Tanka took hold of your hand and the heat from his hand was relieving to say the least. “Here, come with me.” Wakan practically tugged on your arm as you were dragged off towards the dorms at his school.

~“You can use my room.” He said as he guided you in. Not surprising at all everything was disorganized. You commented on the state of his room and all the garments he leaves about. “Oh, don’t worry! None of them have been worn yet. I was just looking for my lost jersey!” You sighed and commented that he should take better care of his room while you proceeded to shiver and cough more. You sniffled as your cold began to reach peak chills and shivers. Your joints felt incredibly stiff as you continued to stand. “Here, have a seat.” The football player guided you to his bed and undressed you in most of your clothes except for your under shirt and pants. Then he helped you to get into a cozy enough position in bed as your breathing became harder. Everything felt worse because you were still chilly. “Give me one moment. I’ll let the nurse know and to call your school.” He said that as he jogged off, leaving you to curl up under his sheets. They definitely smelled like Wakan after a long day of practice to the point where you began to wonder if he showered enough. He may be more absent minded but he does care a lot for others so maybe that devotion leads him to neglect his own needs…

~Wakan Tanka came back sniffling with his face looking flushed. “Okay my summoner. The nurse said you can rest here while he contacts your school but it may be a while.” You took notice of his complextion and runny nose. “Oh, this?” He questioned as he wiped his face. “This is probably-” He coughed. “Scratch that- definitely the same cold as you and my Gunzo…” He was starting to shiver and you couldn’t bear to see him like that, so you told him to get into the covers with you. “Oh, do you mean it?” He seemed pretty ecstatic most likely because it meant he could be closer with you. He quickly removed his jersey and tossed it to the side (at least you now know how he loses it) as he crawled into the bed with you. His normally warm body felt like an inferno since he was coming down with the same cold. You welcomed the warmth of course because it meant you were no longer freezing. “Wow my summoner… you feel as though you’re on fire…” He stated, huddling closer to you. “I know it’s because you’re ill, but… I like it…” He yawned. “It’s kind of… relaxing…” Yawns were contagious because you too were beginning to feel dreary. “Maybe… we could…” The two of you trailed off to sleep together within moments, now somewhat comfortable despite your shared illness. When Monobe came over to pick you up he decided to let you sleep for a bit longer with your friend since you both looked “at peace”.

Tsathoggua

~You were chatting away on the phone with Tsathoggua now that classes were done for the day. He was going off about how certain classics will never go out of style and you gave him your honest opinion on the topic. While he was interested in your perspective he seemed dead set in his own ideas and you commented that was totally fine and that he should have fun his way. “Right!? It’s like most gamers nowadays wanna shove their opinions down your throat and you just want em to-” During his rant you let loose a cough that wasn’t very severe. “Hm?” You tried to explain it as a tickle in your throat but a much nastier one came through. “You’re getting sick.” You tried to assure him it wasn’t serious as the sick pains began to set in. “One sec.” With that he disconnected, leaving you to wonder what he meant by that.

~That was until he warped himself right into your room. You let out a hoarse shriek as Tsathoggua’s huge frame startled you. “What!? That’s like, not a way to greet a guest yeah!?” You apologized and explained you weren’t expecting him to just poof on over. “Well what else was I gonna do? Just let you sit all alone? C’mere.” He replied while holding a hand out to you. Hesitantly you grab it and in an instant you were taken to his den of sloth. He brought you over to a bean bag chair he often uses to relax and play games on. Tsath rests himself on the chair and pulls you onto his lap while his minions wrapped you both in a blanket. “Uh… are you comfortable?” You told him you were very comfortable like that, but if he really had to drag you all the way out to his room. “Yes, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to watch movies.” Tsathoggua did seem genuinely concerned with your well-being in his own way. “I just want you to relax, yeah?”

~So giving into Tsathoggua’s offer rather quickly proved good for you in the end. His body was quite soft and cozy which helped you ease up. The movie more served as white noise for you as you quickly became exhausted due to your sickness and fell asleep cozied up in your friend’s fur. “H-Hey…” Tsathoggua grumbled as you were a bit too relaxed. But he eased up when he saw on your sleeping face. Rather than try to put you to rest elsewhere he figured it’d be better (and less work) to adjust you slightly on his frame and using him like a bed. While you weren’t lucid enough to remember what exactly happened, you were happy it did and slept incredibly soundly.

so,, since she cant remember her life as a human, i’ll keep it short !!! but i figured it’s worth mentioning

as a human, she had big aspirations. she was raised predominantly by her grandmother because her parents were always working

luella had always wanted to be a dancer, but she came from a lower middle class family and they couldn’t afford to put her in lessons. so, sometimes she would watch classes through the window

she studied hard in school and was at the top of her class, and despite never formally receiving lessons, all her years of observing classes made her a promising dancer

lu took a year off after high school to work and save money, and planned to audition for a prestigious ballet academy in europe because there were recruiters in her town

however, on the way to the audition, she died in a car accident along with her parents. a few months prior to this, her grandmother had died of old age

so, with the deaths of her and her family, it didn’t take long for her to be forgotten all together

( 𝑨𝑵𝑮𝑬𝑳 . )

as an angel, luella avoided living with humans at first. she did not want to get too attached, and she felt that living among them wouldn’t end well for her

however, even from a distance, she became attached to one human. it was a girl, a ballet dancer. it was then she made the decision to live among humans, and she decided to take up ballet to be closer to her

still, even living among humans, she managed to keep some distance. she was more reserved, and extremely observant. eventually though, the two became friends. she felt more protective over this one human above all others

this continued for a while, but the guilt of having a favorite began to linger in her thoughts. she made the decision to leave and continue watching her from afar instead

once lu left the human world, she started to feel a lot better about herself and could say she no longer had favorites. for a few years, this worked perfectly. except the ballet dancer she had once been so close to developed an illness and passed away from it

lu was riddled with regret. she wished she had stayed close to her for the remainder of her life instead of running away. the worst part was, she knew that human felt abandoned by her

it was the first time as an angel that she felt like a failure

for a while after the death of the dancer, luella couldn’t focus properly. she began spacing out a lot, making mistakes more frequently ( when prior to this, she was the perfect example of what an angel should be ). she could not move on and started to feel like she was not fit to be an angel

as this was negatively impacting her ability to carry out her responsibilities, she pressured by the other angels to either overcome her failures or lose her status as an angel

this ultimatum made her realize she wanted to remain an angel and that she would have to get her act together to do so. for a brief moment, she contemplated giving up her status, to be able to forget it all. but when it came down to it, she didn’t want to lose the memories of all those she had crossed paths with, especially the dancer, who at least was alive in her thoughts

it was not easy to return to being the perfect angel, but she worked hard to get back to that level

eventually, she felt ready to live among humans once more. she decided to move to lunehaven for a while, though she really wants to move to paris one day. in the meantime, she has continued pursuing ballet and works as an instructor for kids

she attempts to live a quiet life, not getting too close to anyone, but it does get lonely sometimes

( 𝑷𝑬𝑹𝑺𝑶𝑵𝑨𝑳𝑰𝑻𝒀. )

luella tends to be quite reserved. she rarely initiates conversations or hangouts, but is relieved when someone else does. she enjoys being social, she’s just skeptical about getting too close to others

she is a scorpio sun with a libra moon so take that as u will !!

she is extremely devoted to dance and being an angel ( despite everything that happened ), and also very devoted to the few that she is close to, however, she changes her mind a lot about other things. her mood tends to change a lot, but she does her best to keep this to herself

as you can expect of scorpio and libra placements, she can be quite an intense/obsessive lover BUT can also be flighty if something seems too serious or causes her to feel too much. yes, she is a walking paradox i do not want 2 live in her head !!!

she adores classical music, which can be expected of a ballet dancer. she wants to learn how to play violin one day

her taste is pretty .... refined, so she can be quite the snob sometimes

she enjoys going to the theatre and the opera and stuff like that, and mostly goes alone

she comes alive at nighttime tbh,, the quiet hours once everyone has gone to sleep is her favorite time of day. she lovessss stargazing and if you become her friend, she will force you to have picnics under the stars

ex-friends - someone she used to consider a best/close friend, but they had a falling out for whatever reason n maybe they strongly dislike each other now. maybe they want to re-kindle their friendship but don’t know how

sibling-like friendship - someone she sees like a sibling. they’re there for each other and look out for one another, always have each other’s backs

dynamic duo - ride or dies. platonic soulmates !! this person is prob one of the closest people to her and knows her very well ! they could b a power duo, always looking out for each other

take care - i think it would be cool if maybe one day she drank a little too much or was having an off day in general and your muse helped her get home and spent the night to make sure she was okay. lu probably feels like she owes them a favor and is really grateful in general that they took the time to care

confidant - someone who confides in her or someone she confides in, or they confide in each other. they don’t necessarily have to be the closest friends ever, but they get along, trust each other, and maybe they talk more in private

rivals - they don’t like each other for whatever reason, which we can plot. maybe it’s jealousy or their personalities just clash, but for whatever reason they do not get along. maybe they bring out a bad side to her that most people dont see

good influence - someone she can be a good influence on, someone she brings out the best in, maybe someone she rly cares about and wants to look after to make sure they’re ok !!

this is all i have for now, but maybe eventually i will make a plots page !!!

Running thoughts!

The other night I had a marathon anxiety dream and lately I’ve felt very anxious about the idea of getting up early to run long or run fast, also have felt very very unenthused about strength training

I think part of this (the strength training at least) is because we were living in a teeny tiny apartment with very little space and it didn’t feel good to try to workout in there (where we are living in the spring is a bit more open), also moving this week and both of us being home just meant it was a little bit more difficult to have an explicit schedule

But more broadly I’ve been trying to figure out the way running fits into my life right now. I’ve mentioned it before but honestly I think I just absolutely burnt myself out in college re: exercise, waking up at 5am to run/strength train/bike/swim for around two hours every day and with no real purpose in mind but that I just HAD to...it was a lot

And part of me likes that, I like being able to get up early af and watch the sunrise and get a workout in before most of the world is awake but in college I was doing too much, and like I said it wasn’t like I was doing that much with a goal in mind I was just doing it out of habit and compulsion which is ... bad!

SO ANYWAY- Part of me is like okay if you want to be the best runner you can be then the choices are very obvious of what you need to do but then a bigger part of me is like...but I just don’t want to do that right now

And it’s hard because to an extent I feel like ok if I’m going to go through the effort of training for a marathon shouldn’t I go all in? Like if it is already taking time and energy I might as well not half ass it but I’m! Burnt! Out!

I also think there is something to be said for the fact that I’m only 23 and a lot of my runner pals I admire didn’t even really get super into the sport until their mid twenties and I feel like I jumped in and saw all these badass people doing badass things and said I want to do that but did not give myself the time to build the base to do so

WhAt Am I EvEn SaYiNg

Idk I guess I just have a very hard time with the concept of not devoting 110% to something if I’m going to bother with it at all, like I don’t want to finish my race in february wishing I had done more, I want that satisfaction of knowing I put in weeks and weeks of work

But also

I finally feel healthy, it’s been two years since I raced my first and only marathon and like I’ve said from the start my primary goal is just getting to this race healthy and I feel like when I signed up for it that concept didn’t even seem believable (I know there’s still a few weeks so uh universe pls don’t come @ me now) but now it does and I’m like wait what? I’m actually gonna get to run it?

This is such a random jumble of thoughts

But anyway basically what I have realized is that I really enjoy putting in mileage, plus I feel significantly stronger running higher mileage, and I really do nooooot like strength training right now because I spent too long doing too much and taking time out of my day to run is enjoyable but to strength train is! Not!

And idk where I stand on speedwork, obviously it is important and if I want to run my best race I should prob do more of it but honestly running any race is satisfying in my mind rn and so long as I race SMARTER I would be astonished if I didn’t PR.

I’m also just realizing that in college running was like 90% of my life and now I have other things to fill my life and I like running but it isn’t all I have

Also re: food, this past fall I have definitely eaten waaaay more on a day to day week to week etc basis than I have in YEARS and let me tell ya I don’t feel! Any! Nagging pains! From running! Just sayin! (Also side note on a podcast I heard mario fraioli talk about how when he was restricting he got 3 stress fractures and in the past 10 years since he has developed a healthier relationship with food he hasn’t gotten injured)

I just feel...better. Like did I end up crying a few nights ago about some stupid ED related thing? Yep. But do I spend hours and hours stuck in a mental trap obsessing over food? Not nearly as much as I used to. I feel like this fall I kind of ripped the band aid off and I just feel better. Like I’m at the airport rn waiting to go home and for the first time I’m EXCITED for my mom to cook dinner and to eat cheese and crackers and drink wine and go out to breakfast and I just. Idk man. I just feel better. And I feel like there is more to life. And I felt like I would never ever ever find a space where the little voice in my head went away but it is much quieter now and I truly believe in that future.

I've been thinking about this statement of TRR writers that so many of them would date/marry Hana, and how it isn't reflected in the way the story is written, and then it finally hit me, that it's probably true but in the most depressing way. Because it's probs not about the fact that they love Hana-the-character, but about the fact that they've written Hana as the perfect bride, the always supportive, loyal and good at everything spouse, and it makes me feel really icky now.

Thank you so much for that very observant insight, @bubblygothzombie! That is a very real possibility, and it would make sense considering that whenever Hana is spoken about, she's spoken about in terms of skills and perfection. Which is harmful - because often the narrative has the characters spout these "Perfect Hana" tidbits so they don't have to bother with actual characterization. Case in point? Look at the the descriptives given to each LI if you decide to do a non-imported playthrough:

Notice how every other character has their most obvious character trait (Dashing. Sarcastic. Humorous) followed by a descriptor of their loyalty (Honourable. Steadfast. Loyal). Hana's descriptors are literally just her beauty and her skills. Why not "devoted"? Or "dedicated"?

That descriptor sounds so impersonal, especially when you take into account that she left her home and family for us...twice. Placed herself in a difficult situation where she was vulnerable to bullying and cruelty. And still stays by our side and does an incredible amount of work for us even though she gets nothing but dust in return. If that is not loyalty then what is?

But no, Hana will never be known for that. She will be known for her 'niceness' and her usefulness. The writers haven't really cared to explore her much beyond that, and it's sad because there is so much simmering under the surface with her!

The other thing that more often than not leads me to believe in a lack of caring from the writing team, is the fact that they will not hesitate to place Hana in horrific situations...but will rarely (if ever) give her the space to actually talk about what she is going through - not unless the MC gets to go on her own ego trip being this woman's "savior". I'm beginning to realize that most of Hana's scenes in Book 1 - while poignant and beautifully written - were probably written that way so the MC could be placed on a pedestal in Hana's eyes.

The more I think about Book 2 (and Book 3 too) from Hana's perspective, the more disturbing it seems. Liam is the one who brings Hana back to the court, not Madeleine. Who tells us this? Not Liam who made the deal. Not Hana who heard it from him personally, accepted it, and returned for the MC's sake at her own personal risk. It's Drake. DRAKE's scene tells us that Liam arranged for Hana to return.

In the meantime what happens? Hana never gets to personally acknowledge that Madeleine wasn't responsible for her return, and is therefore expected to be publicly grateful and obedient to her future Queen without whose benevolence "she'd still be on the other side of the world". Hana is not allowed to contest this by the narrative, even in private.

Madeleine is allowed to use the fact that no one knows who was responsible for her return, against Hana...but Hana is never allowed on her own to tell the truth or even push back (and we know from that diamond scene where she tells off Olivia that she can push back on her own terms). She's placed in a very, very dangerous situation where the woman in power can abuse and threaten her, right up till the point where her mental health is affected (the aftermath of the chocolate episode shows her breaking down, and her friends need to come in, comfort and distract her. Shortly after this, Madeleine reveals that she did it to "break" Hana - which is seen as 'fun'. The MC herself this and confronts Madeleine about it).

How is this addressed in the story? By having Madeleine pass off her actions as a hazing ritual, which the MC doesn't bother to contest even though she knows better. The MC doesn't even try to warn Hana, doesn't even attempt to protect her. Even that one time we can call out Madeleine on her behaviour in Italy, is an option. The MC can choose to keep quiet as well and therefore keep Hana completely in the dark.

In that final scene in Book 3 where Madeleine confesses to Hana the motive behind her bullying, the MC behaves as though this is brand new information, even though she heard her words in Italy that night, loud and clear.

Later, the books try to cast Madeleine in a more sympathetic light, and in a bid to do so try to completely erase this episode. The one rare time it is (vaguely) mentioned, Madeleine says this:

I'm sure she's willing to let bygones be bygones. That's what this was reduced to, up until people spoke out against the possibility of Madeleine being Hana's potential love interest.

Why was Hana not allowed to push back, given that she clearly knew Liam's involvement in her return?? Because no one writing the story seemed to want to give her the edge over a figure like Madeleine. They wanted Hana under Madeleine's thumb, to never really have any power in front of her. And Madeleine isn't the only one Hana is forced into a "lesser" position around. The MC - who is her friend - not only benefits from Hana's help if she accepts it, but sometimes even takes credit (eg. the polo scene in Book 3 where she becomes popular for a move that was created by Hana). Plenty of the MC's approval points come from Hana's advice and help, and it's clear that of the two women (by default, definitely, and this is often clearer in the playthroughs where the MC fails at everything) Hana is the better courtier, and would make a much better Duchess. Yet she only gets a duchy if MC marries her, otherwise by the end of Book 2 she's basically without a proper home to call her own, without much of a position, living on someone else's charity. Even though she is "Perfect Hana" who has all the skills, and even in a case where the MC can't do anything right...the MC still gets the duchy.

Hana never actually gets what she deserves because the narrative makes her less powerful despite her skills. She had apparently 200 PinStop boards full of things she wanted for her wedding, but somehow ended up wearing a muted black dress for her own bachelorette, was declared "husband and wife" by the officiant at her own wedding, was treated like a bridesmaid+wedding planner at her own damn reception.

Olivia, for all her good traits, is allowed to get away with shitty behaviour towards Hana as well.

Perhaps one wouldn't call this bullying or harmful, but it does highlight how much of Hana's voice the narrative robs from her. Hana is allowed that one time in Book 1 to call out Olivia on her behaviour and attitude towards her. Despite paying 30 diamonds so that scene can happen, Olivia still quips in my playthrough (when Hana stands up to her father in Shanghai) about Hana "finally developing a spine". In the scene above (Book 3 Chapter 15), Hana is allowed to express anger (Wow! What progress!) but never really allowed to do anything about it. Olivia can get away with saying bullshit about her, Madeleine can get away with her bullying, Lorelei can (mostly) get away with her emotional abuse, with Hana constantly striving and working to educate her.

The even more disturbing thing is that when harm is done to other people...it is acknowledged no matter what wrong they may have done in the past, but in Hana's case the same pain isn't considered worth addressing. Madeleine's behaviour is labelled as bullying...if the victim in question is Penelope. Penelope is allowed to be disturbed by reminders of Madeleine, she is allowed to put forth demands to the group, even Drake (the same one who automatically suspects a traumatized Kiara) steps forward to tell her she is safe and Madeleine won't harm her. And if you don't coddle her exactly in the way she wants, Penelope will not travel on the Unity Tour with you, and her father will refuse to attend the wedding. Hana is never given this space, and her issues and pain are never taken this seriously.

I mean, I can somewhat understand loving a character and still making them only "perfect"...and not working so much on the imperfections for whatever reason. But in this case they slap her with the "perfect" stamp, make her blameless in most cases, and then brush aside all the wrongs done to her. How does a writing team do that to a character they claim to care about??

Tldr: The writers will publicly shower Hana with compliments and show lots of love in their interviews and livestreams and constantly call her "perfect", because it's the easiest thing to do. But the bitter fact is that when it comes right down to it they want her less powerful, less fulfilled, given less support - and they will anyday create more sympathy for the people who harmed her rather than ever acknowledge her pain or work on making things better for her. As you've stated here, it's sickening.

Nice to see Eren playing 4D Chess with Pieck. I loved Pieck's "Please take care of me!" as she went up the stairs! And Yelena standing up for Sasha was a great moment in my book too - a bit extreme like, but that's Yelena's style though! Eren at the end returning to his old self - angry and legless - was my favourite moment though!

I never really got invested much in the new Marley characters, but god damn if I don’t love Pieck more after every chapter. I mean the pointing thing? That was SICK

I liked Nicolo's defending of Sasha and it hurt to see her family forced to listen to that guy degrading her. And because of his feelings for her and for eldians, I chose him as the MVP for now :)

Grior. He showed us how deeply Nicolo felt about Sasha, he created a scene where Jean got to show his worth, and he opened the door to everyone seeing exactly how creepy Yelena is. He made EVERYONE (besides Yelena) look good. :D

Gabi is easily the character whose future development I look forward to the most.

I feel like Gabi needs to listen but Pieck here really means there's another method on the way; the rest is just her LARPing as a restorationist to gain Eren's trust, just as Armin did with Annie in the past.

Gabi's already gotten so many doses of reality that have done nothing. I honestly don't feel anything about these moments at this point.

Pieck isn't entirely lying here. She believes that eldians should fight for themselves and is using Marley to get what she wants. Good on her for calling out Gabi's blind devotion to Marley! Stupid child.

Pieck is showing her true thoughts but won't act on them, because she won't betray Marley and everyone she knows.

Gabi truly believes that all the Warriors are doing what they do in the name of Marely, Zeke turned his back on Marley to accomplish his ultimate goal and Pieck revealed that she doesn't trust them at all. Gabi may understand that simply being an honorary Marleyian isn't why the Warriors fight for Marley, they simply fight for themselves, even if it does help Marley to an extent.

I'm more interested in what it means for Pieck's viewpoint tbh. She says this, and is clearly smart enough to know this to be true, and yet is still apparently fighting for Marley. I'm very interested to see whether she actually has any ideas on how to win Eldian freedom after the Paradis battle.

Pieck was telling half-truths to Gabi, she knows about the danger of the Eldians being obsolete but Eren is not the answer for the survival of her people in the mainland.

Now our favourite Jailbirds: I'm so happy to see them after a few months. Jean continues to be the best, and my most favourite boy, I liked how rationally and objectively he viewed the situation -- and the fact that he was still vouching for Eren, and showing so much care for Mikasa made my heart flutter a lil bit.

Has Eren burned every bridge? The majority, at about 55% think both Armin and Jean will still end up siding with him. Just below that, 47.7% think Mikasa will continue to support him. 28.9% think everyone listed will oppose joining up with him.

Eren alienated Mikasa and Armin so i think they won't join, but they can't abandon him either.

I bet Eren broke ties with Armin and Mikasa so that they wouldn't get involved in this fight, because he's seen a scenario where they die here.

It's hard to tell because Eren's "side" is still quite a mystery. If he truly believe in the euthanasia plan then I doubt anyone in the SC will join him, even Mikasa. But if it turns out his plan is something else we don’t know, then they might help him in the end. Most likely Armin and Jean. But I doubt any of the SC joins the Euthanasia side, now we just need to find out if that's actually Eren's side.

I really like that Pieck was pointing her finger at Eren, as he asked on the rooftop where the enemy is and she said 'there'. Can't say I was surprised about how things unfolded. The SC are still in jail, at this point it's laughable. Pieck and Marley attack - who didn't see it coming? Onyankopon is still shady. Yelena is still cray cray. Eren is still acting like a heartless asshole. Gabi is beyond redemption, she would have shot Pieck if she hadn't been stopped. So nothing much was new :D

It would make the most sense for Eren to lose this upcoming fight because he abandoned his friends, while the opposing side is united because of their friendship (if we're speaking in narrative terms). But we still don't know what his thoughts are, how much he knows, what his plans are, or his reasoning for anything. How can he be the main antagonist of this fight if we don't know this much? Idk but I hope we'll get some clarification during the fight (but I doubt it)

Will Reiner overcome his sufferboi status to finally do something right for himself? That's what I want to see.

I want to know if they have Hot Chocolate in the cell or some coffee. Why only tea? What is Eren planning withholding the coffee?

Armin's ability to manipulate has levelled up so much! He might be overplaying it a little bit with the tears, but considering previously he was really bad at making the emotions on his face reflect what he was saying, he's getting better at it. It both excites and saddens me. Excites because it makes him all the more dangerous; saddens because my greatest wish for Armin is that he needn't know these skills at all. Just let him be free and travel and see cool things! He deserves it.

Jean and Connie are both right. Eren's not absolved just because he has reasons for his actions. Lying and manipulating your friends is shitty, especially if you're doing it "for their own good." So yeah, Liam was on talks, so of course I wrote stuff...

Somebody may have already talked about this, but there's something I really appreciate about Liam. I really, genuinely, appreciate that he's not afraid to explore grief. Like, I don't even mean how well he acted in Campaign One with regards to that. But that as a player, he decided to create Caleb. This got long yo, rest is under the cut.

I often wonder what led Liam to creating this scared little guy, but I will always appreciate it. Because Caleb is an incredibly thorough study not just of 'sadness', but of grief. I believe I've said this before, but Caleb and Nott first stood out to me because both of their players actively handicapped themselves within the game mechanics. Yasha drew my attention as well, but it was harder to pin her down wrt analysis. Caleb's and Nott's handicaps though? Those were clearly, directly related to PTSD.

To break it down further, grief is a funny thing, that people react differently to. Some people are stuck in a state of depression/bargaining about it (Caleb). Some accept it (to a degree), but do so in an unhealthy way (Nott). And some get stuck in a cycle of anger and depression (Yasha). And others still, have many other ways of coping, not coping, sliding through the cycle slowly, or cycling through it rapidly (exhaustively). Honestly, without Nott and Yasha as foils, I don't know that I'd understand Caleb as well as I do.

Really, I only relate to Caleb's grieving as much as I do, rather than to Nott and Yasha's, because of who he lost, and how he's now lost himself within that grief. What Ikithon did to him, that he was forced to be complicit in, was also a far shorter period of 'torment' than the following fifteen years. What Ikithon did (that so many of us trauma survivors relate to) was strip his agency as he tormented him. And the resulting 'break' landed him in an asylum.

When you spend a decade not being called your own name, and spend that time not even being aware of that, that changes you fundamentally. When you spend years at a time in neglect and isolation, after escaping said asylum, because of a so-called penance fueled by grief and fear and rage, that changes you fundamentally. Ikithon had already warped Caleb, but how much of this story would change if Caleb hadn't landed in the asylum? What if something else had happened? What if Caleb's break resulted in a different consequence?

Liam deliberately set up Caleb's story to force Caleb to not directly confront his trauma and the perpetrators. He deliberately made Caleb both child-like in his grief (the fogginess of the in-between time and the memory problems make it seem so recent still, compounded by the isolation&neglect), and a mature adult in his shame and his fury (the power he so desperately seeks and his ruthless tactics to anything in his way). That dichotomy is unbelievably relatable, to an extent that I'm not even sure I could adequately express why.

Caleb certainly isn't alone in being someone I relate to, tbh. Nott is a creature of purpose, and is so driven to get back to her family and to be who she used to be. Yasha has her devoted remembrance and her rage. Those are incredibly relatable, and it's why I couldn't pick a favorite between these three as characters.

On an unrelated, but tangentially relevant note: I'm so fucking glad Nott and Caleb met in that jail cell. Caleb abso-fuckin-lutely needed a wake-up call. He was going through the motions, stuck in in a self-fulfilling guilt-ridden cycle. And damn, Caleb wouldn't be nearly as understandable without Nott as a foil. Characters that deep into their own grief, cannot make healthy connections with others. So thank TPTB that Nott is able, despite her own past problems with this, to have an easier time of developing relationships with others. Because scared little Caleb needed the fuckin help.

Like, this may seem obvious, but I believe it needs saying. Trying to reach out and make a friend, make a genuine honest connection, when you've experienced such a deep fucking loss as what Caleb did, is unbelievably exhausting, depending on how you yourself can handle your grief. You're so goddamned scared all the time that whatever you do won't matter, because how long until you lose this one too?

How long til this family member, or this relative, or this new 'friend' is lost to you too? You're always, almost subconsciously, shutting out that connection. It's as a defense mechanism, but of course you like this person. This person is wonderful, they make you laugh, but... but....but how long do you have left with them?

Liam as a player?? Fuckin shit dude. He'll just barrel on through all these big scary feelings and stuff, just absolutely unafraid to face it and probs make his friends cry on the way. Like good job dude, damn, but also...How does he put all of that into one single expression? A single turn of phrase? Liam when he said that thing tonight about, '...now he (Caleb) thinks he has... fffFFriiieeeENDS?'

Like damn dude, fucking relatable. Being so lost in your own grief like that....yep. But still, that he knows, even though the situation needs so much recontextualization now, that he'll do he whatever he can to help Nott, and knows absolutely that he loves Nott? Yeah. I get it.

You don't gotta be hit with a brick, even lost in your own grief as you are, to realize that people all around you will still make you love them. That's how people are, even when you're lost as deep as that. They love you, so of course you love them too.

seraphina was born on the 4th of march, 1999. she was born in paris, france because her parents were in town for fashion week. creating and leading one of the biggest beauty companies in the world, her mother was expected to attend

her father protested, due to how close she was to her due date, but despite her pregnancy, her mother never really stopped working and continued to work even after seraphina was born

the story behind her parents marriage was not especially romantic. her mother came from old money, and her father was a soccer player, also heir to his parents fortune. it was a match made in heaven--or hell, depending on who you ask

they were quick to marry, but her father actually fell madly in love. her mother enjoyed his devotion, but when it came down to it, she was married to her career and all she really strove for was success

they were married for around 8 long years when her mother got pregnant. of course, it wasn’t planned in the slightest, and she wasn’t too thrilled but her parent’s (sera’s granparent’s) had been pushing for grandchildren for years

her father was happy. he thought a child was the perfect way to get her mother to step down from work for a bit and for them to actually be a happy family

unfortunately for seraphina and her father, that was never the case. her mother put her career before anyone else. she never wanted to get married or have kids in the first place

so, when seraphina was born, she was handed off to a nanny and her mother went straight to work

her father attempted to be there at the start, and he was for a few years, but it became increasingly difficult to be around seraphina who resembled her mother so much. he felt it was a constant reminder of his failed marriage and miserable life

seraphina was left to the nannies again. luckily for her, she was raised by two wonderful women who loved her dearly. they taught her the importance of kindness and let her know it was okay to be sensitive. admittedly, they coddled her a bit too much and it would make her vulnerable in the future

she grew up with both her parental figures mostly absent. her father popped in once in a while, but he had succumbed to alcoholism and was too busy wrapped up in a string of affairs to really care.

her mother was away on business most of the time, but there were some nights when she’d return from a business trip and pay her daughter a visit. she would tell her stories about her travels, tales of extravagant parties and experimental fashion. seraphina ate it up. she craved for her mother’s attention desperately, so when she received it, she dreamed of the stories she told her for months until she’d see her again and hear new stories

despite her situation, she didn’t feel any resentment toward her parents. in fact, she wanted their love and validation more than anything. but she figured as long as they were happy doing whatever they were doing, she shouldn’t be so selfish in wanting them to spend time with her. besides, all the kids like her experienced the same thing. neglect was just part of the package

she spent all of her free time with her head in a novel or watching obscure cinema. she enjoyed getting lost in the stories, pretending she was part of them. she also became increasingly fascinated with the idea of love, especially as she grew older, though she had no idea what it was supposed to look like. her only examples were the things she saw in movies or read in her favorite books

when it came to schooling, seraphina switched around a lot between new york city, australia and france. it made it difficult to make long term friends, but she liked not being in one place for too long

she had boyfriends and girlfriends here and there, but nothing truly stuck. it was easy for her to fall for someone, but once they got together, she realized maybe she didn’t actually like them all that much

still, she believed in love as strongly as ever and believes one day she’ll find it, the real kind

it was always easy for seraphina to make friends. she was kind to everyone, but being a wang came with certain perks. no one would dare say a bad word about her. how could they?

only in recent years has seraphina started to realized the way the world truly works. after years of hiding it, she found out her father had another child. it wasn’t intentional, but it happened with some woman he had an affair with

the worst part was, he was actually there for that child. it wasn’t hard for him to lead a secret life with another family while seraphina was away at school and her mother off on business

this discovery broke her heart. for the first time in her life, she understood what it was like to have your heart broken. she’s done her best to pick up the pieces and move forward, but it isn’t as simple as she hoped it’d be

He’s just a little slow sometimes to the joke hehe. And I know I’m all over the place but there is a method to my madness. I can see date night would be more of a relaxation for you and Jimin tbh. You two would have cute little spa nights too!! Omg lavender candles everywhere to bring those stress levels down. You personally would like for Jimin to focus more on self care ya know? PDA is so sweet omg. Jimin would handle you like glass, with the softest hand holding and the softest pecks on the cheeks, and can’t forget the lips. Jimin would also love to grab you and hug you and give you the biggest bear hug.

Got7: Jinyoung

Okay so not only does your senses of humor match up nicely, but I think your personalities match up well too! You two are very quirky and dorky in theory, but you two would also have this feeling in your relationship where you can tease each other -playfully- and pick at each others -playfully- quirks. But overall, on the outside of the picking, Jinyoung would be very sweet and respectful towards you. Little back story, I don't remember if you remember it, but, there was a broadcast that Jinyoung and JB went on where they were talking to an older man that was an abusive drunk. We really got to see the inner gentleman like qualities of JB as well ad Jinyoung, and after seeing that broadcast, I can see Jinyoung being a true gentleman, specifically leaning more old school gentleman as well! Like, he always will say ‘yes ma’am’ ‘no ma’am’- aka extremely respectful towards you. He literally goes above and beyond for date night to give you the best experience ever, and he will devote himself to you no matter what, like the loyalty this boy has is so admirable, other guys are shaking in their shoes. He is also like the best listener ever, so you can trust me when I say that Jinyoung would treat you like a queen and make sure you’re put together so not only can he be the best, but you can be your best as well! The in the beginning, when I mentioned that you two are happy dorky beans, omg you’re so freaking cute together. You two would really bounce off of each others happiness and you can easily get in giggle fits over little things. Like, just imagine getting into a giggle fit with Jinyoung, you lucky girl lol. And if you’re not doing date night, I can see you and Jinyoung spending more time at home than anything else. You two enjoy staying home for the relaxation time. Then if the weather is just right, you’ll go out for walks or cute little picnics in the park or on the river. I can also see Jinyoung going all out for date night. No two dates are exactly the same, and you are treated like a queen the whole time. Those dates are also memorable bc Jinyoung will take your interests and loves into every date, he’s just that good. Lastly, for PDA, I can see Jinyoung being protective and almost possessive when it comes to PDA tbh. Like, one of his arms are always around your waist, a hand holding yours, and sudden kisses if necessary. He’s possessive for different reasons, but a big reason is because you’re a smol bean, and he wants to keep you close to him so you won’t lose him. (:

Monsta X: Hyungwon

So we’re ending this ship with the most handsome meme man I can think of. He is now in your hands, you are welcome, hehe. You two are a little shy but quirky and I can see you two showing your love through touch. I don't think I have ever talked about this type of love before, but hear me out. This doesn’t count as PDA, so don't worry, btw. But, not long after you two would be together, you two would develop a sense where you two would exactly know how and when to hold each other. You two would also know if one of you needed something. Overall, if what I mean is to confusing, it basically means that you two are in sync. When Hyungwon is not a sleepy bean, I can see you two being pretty active. You’re not the wild and mild spectrum, it’d just be really cute for Hyungwon to take you out. To be honest, none of us would be prepared for soft boyfriend Hyungwon, but girl are you lucky. Hyungwon would be that type of guy that would look at you in the eyes with the most loving adoration look in his eyes. He also is that type of guy that really enjoys engaging in the conversations that you two have, and he would always love to know more about the topic you were talking about, he just loves to engage with you. Also, Hyungwon would also love to see you get excited over your favorite books or movies. OMG LISTEN HERE. Okay SO, it would be no surprise that you love elephants, I can see Hyungwon learning that when you’d first meet. Hyungwon can be really good at surprises, but imagine one day he shows up with a stuffed elephant and your favorite candy. Like, omg, the thoughtfulness that Hyungwon would give to you sometimes is so stinking cute, I’m so soft. Moving right along, I can also see Hyungwon taking a big interest in your profession. Like, you’re like a person who sticks big needles into people and take their blood like a metaphorical vampire? COOL(btw, I give blood so like, you’re awesome, keep going!)! And tbh, you would be able to convince Hyungwon to give blood. Hell, you would even convince the rest of Monsta X to give blood, every pint counts! Also omg, imagine you giving saxophone lessons to Hyungwon. Make that man a jazz king lol. Last but not least, PDA. Height differences would be shown, it’s Hyungwon lol. OMG IT WOULD BE SO CUTE IF YOU WOULD STAND ON HYUNGWON’S TOES FOR KISSES. MY HEART. For real though, you two are so freaking cute and I love you two together!

One Episode Left

GoT has one episode left to wrap everything up.

And I have absolute faith that it's going to be satisfactory. [Even if I am *STILL* sobbing over Varys. Gods, I loved Varys.]

No, not everything in this show has been perfect. Torture is ineffective--Ramsay's torture of Theon wouldn't have gotten the reaction it did realistically--and yeah, there's plenty of things that could've been tweaked, adjusted or rewritten. There were incidents that weren't in the books (to my knowledge because we only have five books out atm) that weren't necessary. (Sansa with the Boltons comes to mind.) But there is one thing that I've loved about this show from the beginning.

And it's characterization.

The characterization is solid.

Now EVERYONE is either flipping the fuck out over Dany or doing as I did and pointing out ALL THE WAYS this has been meticulously foreshadowed from the first season. [One solid scene is Dany in the House of the Undying--she walked into the throne room of the Red Keep and the ceiling was open, the pillars were damaged and everything was blanketed in soft white. Which everyone prob thought was snow due to "winter is coming" but it was ash.] Dany was raised on the "divine right of kings" and learned how to conquer. Not rule. CONQUER. And the best we ever saw of her was in season 4 when she admitted to Jorah that she didn't know how to rule, that there was no reason for anyone to accept her as queen and she was gonna damn well stay in Meereen and try to learn.

And why did we see that? Because at that point, everyone who had put an obstacle in Dany's path had been slaughtered. She'd used "fire and blood" to conquer her enemies and all the people left (initially) were hailing her as the Breaker of Chains. That was Dany at her best--when she realized she didn't know how to rule and was going to try to learn.

It fell apart, largely because a) she sent Jorah away (understandable, all things considered) and no longer had him to temper her impulses with counsel and b) because problems arose that she couldn't handle with a single word of High Valyrian.

That was Dany at her best. Her shift hasn't been from good to evil. It's been from conqueror to adored savior and back to conqueror. She's been through Hell, no doubt, and lost almost everything she's ever loved. Dany wasn't taught how to endure loss; she was taught that loss was an offense to her and her birthright, thanks to Viserys spending years talking about their "stolen throne" and their "lost birthright."

Divine right of kings. It's a bitch. [I also think there’s an entire underlying theme that focusing on “reclaiming a birthright” over creating your own god damn life is going to lead straight to Hell in this entire book series.]

No, the "characterization" that I've seen people swear was ruined was Jaime Lannister's. Yes, he should've stayed with Brienne. Yes, he should've cleaved to her and abandoned Cersei. Yes, he really was doing a stupid to run back south and try to reach his sister.

...but you know what? Jaime's been Cersei's other half for his ENTIRE LIFE. He's had the "everyone else is an enemy" pounded into his head by Tywin, just as it was beaten into Cersei (who took it more to heart.) For years, the only person who he thought loved him for himself was Cersei.

And you know, there's this thing where you can love someone who treats you poorly. You can love someone who asks you to do things you don't agree with. You can hope for the love of someone who doesn't love you back (Tyrion was constantly hoping just... just MAYBE Cersei will one day at least see him as family and not an enemy.) Love is complicated, overwhelming and agonizing. [I didn't see anyone complaining about Ygritte peppering Jon Snow's ass with arrows when he chose the Night's Watch over her...] And you can also love two people at once.

Jaime wasn't toying with Brienne. He didn't sleep with her as a joke or to manipulate her. Jaime genuinely loves Brienne. He respects her, is confused and impressed by her honor and sees in her someone that HE could have been if things had been different.

And why would he want to "taint" someone that he respects? Why would he want to linger to damage that honor? Jaime was clear about how he felt when he told her that Cersei was hateful and so was he. It was as close to an explanation that he could give. 'I love you but you are genuinely too good for me and I fear you'll come to regret your choices as I have if I stay.'

He still loved Cersei, even with all that had fallen apart between them, and when it came down to the end, that's what he clung to. Because for that one moment, it WAS just them. That's all that mattered. That they were together at the end. And I can't fault that in the slightest. For season after season, he's been devoted to Cersei, even when she's turned him away or betrayed him. He did what he felt was the best possible choice--leaving Brienne before she could regret him and trying to save Cersei because he still loved her.

As for how their death came about? I loved it.

Not every death is climactic. Not every death is one single character's ongoing story resolution. [Jon didn't need to kill the damn Night King to 'resolve' anything.] Not every single character-specific arc gets a tidy resolution.

And we have a LOT of precedence for this, stretching back to when the books were still guiding the show. Oberyn Martell didn't get his character-specific arc. He didn't get his justice. He got murdered. This is a precedent that has long been established and having people die in a logical manner (i.e. being crushed by collapsing architecture when you're in the lowest point of a building and the supports are giving out) isn't bad writing.

This isn't "sloppy" or "bad" or "idiotic" or any of the other terms I've seen thrown about. The entire point of ASOIAF, translated into Game of Thrones, is that this is NOT A FAIRY TALE. A happy ending is a surprise and a delight in this world, not an expectation. A complete story arc with a triumphant hero is RARE and all the more valuable for when it comes.

I've been rereading the books and rewatching the entire series in preparation for the Final Episode and honestly, the foreshadowing has been meticulous, the character development has been consistent and the characterization has been solid the entire time.

Even Arya turning away from vengeance was solid. She NEVER let go of being Arya Stark; that was one of the biggest issues with her becoming a Faceless Man. She wouldn't give up Needle and she never forgot who she really was, even as she struggled to become "no one." And that person she was trying to hold onto was Arya Stark. Arya Underfoot. The girl who was raised in Winterfell, had a family and had some semblance of hope for life.

Now she had resigned herself to death. She was PREPARED for it when she took out the Night King--which was also foreshadowed--and when she survived? It was confusing as fuck. She couldn't say yes to Gendry because she still hadn't come to terms with the fact that she had lived. That she might KEEP living.

And going to King's Landing was an attempt to hang onto that 'no one.' To work with that decision she had faced and use her existence for some good in the world.

Sandor Clegane had become someone she respected while still reviling. Arya and he clashed multiple times on a morality basis while traveling to the Vale in season 4. For him to tell her that she was on the verge of becoming him was the last straw for her to grasp that using her existence wasn't living and now, maybe... she could take that chance and live and maybe find a little of the Arya Stark she remembered once again.

Characterization: Solid

Unprofessional

The director looked back and forth between the two of you, both sets of eyes staring back at him, patiently waiting for some sort of direction or discussion about how your scenes with Sebastian would go for this new film.

“So kids, as you know, the background for this film is not romance, but your characters have a romantic relationship that they both deny weaved throughout the main storyline.”

Neither of you said anything as you listened to him, but internally, you were panicking. You were new to this acting thing and completely surprised you got the role opposite someone like Sebastian Stan as it was, but romance? Flirting and kissing and…a sex scene? That was so not something you had ever dipped your toes into before and you wondered how unlucky you could possibly be for your first time having to do this be with Sebastian Stan of all people.

Most actresses would be thrilled, you had no doubt, but most actresses knew what they were doing in these situations; they had done it a million times before; could separate emotion and attraction from the job; kissed an abundance of other actors…not a chance of being in the same predicament. But for you, Sebastian Stan was like being shoved into an ice-cold river, deceptively deep, with no one around to help you.

You jumped up and down when the call came in confirming you got the part, of course, but you were most definitely, not informed that your co-star would be someone so…sexy, funny, smart, talented, experienced; so ridiculously attractive. And not only did you have to kiss his unfairly plump lips, you had to simulate sex with him; the kind of sex without an ounce of mediocrity involved. This would be wild, crazy sex sparked suddenly from an intense fight that slowly turns into “love making” as your characters realize how they really feel about one another.

So yea, this situation slightly resembled your worst nightmares. Nevertheless, you were now a professional; you had to get your shit together. But, you couldn’t let go, even slightly, of the fact that you would need to touch this man in a number of seriously intimate ways and not develop some sort of emotional attachment to him.

You were not good at that. Never had been.

In high school, you acted in one play as Juliet, had a couple simple kisses with your Romeo and from that point on you were ‘in love’ with Alex Anderson; Senior, drama club president, voted most likely to succeed, really attractive Alex Anderson; also lovingly devoted to his boyfriend of three years…but you chose to neglect that last bit of information so that your daydreams of him shoving you up against a wall and kissing you senseless were more realistic.

“Seb,” They director continued. “I know you’re practically an old pro at this after the Lance Tucker situation, among others, but I looked over your film history, Y/N,” He said, now directing his attention to you. “and I didn’t find anything that would indicate you have had any experience doing sex scenes and things alike. So, for the benefit of the film,” He chuckled, but he had a seriousness to him that made you realize his next words would be more of a demand than anything. “I suggest the two of you spend some time getting to know one another; ease the tension and awkwardness before we start filming tomorrow.”

“Sounds good.” Sebastian answered before you were even able to process the words just spoken.

‘Get to know’ You thought. ‘Does that mean talk like normal people about hopes, dreams, favorite colors blah blah blah, or…oh god…kissing?’

You heard Sebastian’s deep silky voice inches from you ear and it sent a shiver down your spine. “That ok with you?” He asked.

Your mouth parted unattractively from the panic you felt drenching your body. “Uh…yep! Yea, yes! That’s, uh…fine.”

Well that’s just great! Now you sounded awkwardly eager to be alone with him.

The director clapped his hands together in satisfaction. “Great! Awesome! The sex is first on the list tomorrow, so the easier you guys make getting this scene shot, the better.”

You chuckled nervously. You weren’t an old pro, but you could act, right? It was your damn job. You just hoped Sebastian wouldn’t be able to crumble your resolve, because the level of closeness, the intensity, and extremely visually realistic sex this scene would involve needed to be done without any level of unprofessionalism.

You stared so intently at a small, pale pebble on the ground that you didn’t notice the director walk off, nor Sebastian’s eyes fixated on the side of your face.

“Usually the sex scenes aren’t shot so early.” You could see from your prereferral vision, the glint of his teeth and the shine in his eyes from the sun.

Then, you looked up at his perfect face but forgot to smile, forcing his own to fall; his lips settling back in place. He rubbed the back of his neck and stuck his free and out in your direction.

“We didn’t exactly get introduced earlier, but I’m Sebastian. You can call, I mean I would like if you called me Seb. My friends do and since we are probably gonna get um…much more physically close than I ever have, or would be, with them, it seems like formalities would be kind of silly.”

You stared at his hand; perfect like the rest of him. Long fingers with rough looking pads.

When is that ever a bad thing? You smirked to yourself as you thought of them running all over your body, but then you remembered your job, his job, this film, and you swallowed hard. Seb is not some man on the street, or in a bar, that would just take you home after harmless flirting for some equally harmless sex, he was your coworker and everything about him made you nervous. Truth be told, if you saw Seb on the street, you would be no less nervous even though you knew you wouldn’t have a shot with him in hell. God only knows the type of women he sleeps with. No doubt every single one of them is perfect.

You placed your hand in his one second before he would have undoubtedly dropped it back to his side from rejection.

“I’m Y/N.”

Justin was perched in his desk at the back of the classroom, his leg bouncing avidly as he idly taps his pencil against the empty sheet of paper. The skin on his lower lip becomes chapped as he continuously gnaws on the plush flesh. Justin's eyes flicker to the round clock that sat on the wall, he spectates heedlessly waiting for the bell to ring.

He rises from his chair, hastily collecting his things and shoving them inside of his book bag the moment the erratic timbre rang in the air. He slides an arm through the strap of his book bag and quickly exits the classroom, paving his way through the many bodies of his peers that loitered the hallways. He narrows his eyes, scowering them around the room until they landed on the person of his interest. A smile arches on his lips as he approaches her.

She stood at her locker, quietly conversing with Nina who was leaning on the set of lockers next to her. He watched as a genial laugh emanates from her succulent lips.

"Hey, Justin?" Nina's inquisitive inquiry causes Jessica to turn around, glancing over her shoulder she notices Justin standing athwart from them with an amiable smile wavering on his lips. Nina's furrowed brows crease in perplexity as she adverts her gaze between the two of them. She vividly remembers Jess telling her that she was moving forward with her life prior to everything that happened after the trial but she didn't recall Jess informing her that she and Justin were talking to each other again.

"Hey." Justin replied with a small wave of his hand. Clearing his throat and quickly swiveling his tongue across his lower lip, he shifts his gaze to Jessica.

"Uh, I have to go talk to my Calculus teacher about the exam we have Friday. I'll talk to you later, okay?" Nina asked upon immediately noticing the maladroit tension that hovered over them. She bidded Jess with a goodbye wave before walking away. They both watched silently as she disappeared down the hall.

Justin cleared his throat again, nervously tousling his fingers through his disheveled hair before stuffing them into his front pockets. He wasn't sure why he was suddenly compelled with timidity, it had been almost a month since their hookup in the locker room. While he did receive callus glares from Alex who harbored no negligence in voicing his utter disdain and animosity towards him, things between him and Jess had slowly started to get better.

There was still a slight timorousness that resided amongst them but still, she engaged in conversation with him and sometimes they would sit together at lunch. One topic, however, they always veered away from was the night at the dance. Justin wasn't sure if Jessica had regretted her actions; he noticed how she would sometimes distance herself if he stood too close or she would hastily pull her hand away if he accidentally brushed against it. He would always brush it off albeit it saddened him deeply.

"I just wanted to know if you were still coming over? Clay said he would help us study and you could even stay for dinner if you want tonight is Taco Tuesday." He sheepishly rubs at the back of his neck, suddenly becoming abashed by his persistence. From the hesitant expression that marred her face, Justin could see that he was being too adamant.

"You don't have to come if you don't want, sorry if I'm being weird or something. I just thought—"

"No! You're not I just have to see. My parents are still helicoptering me." She chuckles lowly, rolling her eyes as she closes her locker. "I'll try to make it if I can." She assures him with a small smile before walking off in the direction that Nina went. He sighed softly as he groaned inwardly. He wished that things weren't so weird between them, he wished he could tell her that he still loved her though something told him that she knew that already. Justin stops by his locker, exchanging his English book for his US History book and solemnly walks to his next class.

"Do you think she's coming?" Justin murmurs to Clay who was currently sitting on his bed with a pile of books sprawled out around him. He looks up from his paper, eyebrows creased bemusedly as he shrugs his shoulder.

"You tell me. Either way if she isn't here in five minutes we're starting without her." Clay started to continue working on his AP Literature assignment until he noticed Justin pacing anxiously, writhing his hands together as he glanced out the window.

"You're gonna chew your bottom lip off if you don't stop. Look, why don't you just text her and ask?"

Justin sighs as he plops down in the desk chair. "I tried. She didn't text back." He solemnly admits. Why was she ignoring him? Was he being too persistent when he invited her over? The answers to his inquiries were answered by the sound of the doorbell.

"Guys! Jessica's here!" They hear Mrs. Jensen bellow from downstairs followed by a few exchanged words that they couldn't make out. The faint sounds of footsteps ascending up the stairs caused both of them to glare at the door. Jessica appeared a second later, her hand rested on the cold bronze doorknob and she halted after noticing their intent scrutiny.

"Why are you guys looking at me like that?"

"No reason, just weren't sure if you were coming or not." Clay shrugs before placing his English assignment aside and rising off of the bed. He stands up and walks over to his desk, pulling out his old Statistics book and a few sheets of clean notebook paper. "You guys ready to start?" He asked, looking at them both.

"Ready as I'll ever be." Jessica muttered as she enters inside of the bedroom and found a spot on the floor. She slid off her book bag and opened it, pulling out the materials she needed for their study session. Justin sat down next to her, giving her a small smile as he pulled out his study guide.

"Alright. Probs and Stats." Clay opened up the book and instructed them to the page number. They spent over an hour studying and reflecting over the material. Jessica and Justin were spent by time the sun started to go down, but Clay however was determined to proceed despite their complaining.

"We've only gotten through a portion of the study guide. It's three pages! You guys asked me for help, remember?" Clay chastises, clearly annoyed and upset.

"Jesus, Clay, relax." Justin insinuates, rolling his eyes. They both appreciate Clay for devoting half of his day in succoring them with his aide. But they were completely exhausted and needed a little break. "Dinner's almost ready anyway we can finish up afterwards."

"Fine. But I don't want to hear any more complaining."

Jessica chuckled inwardly as she closed her math book shut. Her fingers thread through her loose coiled tendrils. "Wow, who knew Clay could be so–"

"Bossy?" Justin finishes, "Yeah I deal with it everyday."

"How is everything by the way? Here, I mean. You seem a lot happier." Jessica admittedly ponders. Since the announcement of the Jensen's legal adoption of Justin, she has noticed a substantial shift in his demeanor and behavior. He was seemingly attempting to do better in school and steered out of trouble. She was happy that he was in a better environment, around people that genuinely cared about him. He deserved it. She always wanted that for him.

"Yeah, yeah. I am, the Jensen's they're incredible. They treat me like I actually matter and they care about me. It's good to finally have that, you know?" He admits as he reflects back on his previous home life with his mother. Though Justin knew that she did the best that she could at times, he was fortunate and grateful that he found stability within the Jensen's.

"I'm happy for you. I can see a little bit of Clay rubbing off on you too." She chuckles, referencing to the Smiths t-shirt he borrowed from his adoptive brother. Justin followed her in light laughter as he nodded his head. "Well I like it. It looks good on you."

Justin bit down on his lower lip, suddenly becoming conflicted about whether he should ask Jessica about the unspoken thing that still hovered over them. He ultimately gave in and inquired, "Hey Jess?"

"Hm?" She asks, glancing up from her phone to look over at him. He stammered, hesitantly opening his mouth and then snapping it shut. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. When he opened them he found Jessica still staring at him with her eyes brows raised.

"Are you ok—" Her lingering words are cut off by Justin's hungry lips pressing against hers. She stilled, aghast by the sudden action. He pulled away, being compelled with melancholia again after he noticed that she neglected to kiss him back. Justin's face fell sullen as he moved his head back and shifted away from her.

"Sorry. I shouldn't have done that." They weren't together they just hooked up once at a dance. They were friends. Just friends. "I'll go see if dinner's almost ready."

Instead he is met with the genial press of her succulent lips moving against his, he replies almost instantly. The kiss is soft, almost hesitant. He inhales softly as his lip catches her bottom lip within a tight grasp, she gasps lowly into his mouth. Their lips are moving in perfect tandem and Justin swears he could stay kissing Jessica Davis forever. By the time they pull apart Justin's lips are swollen and red, Jessica laughs softly at the sight.

"I still love you, you know? I just..want things to go slow. With everything that's happened I don't want either one of us to get hurt again." She unabashedly admits. She has always loved him but she wanted for things to develop between them. They were both changed people, more mature than when they first started dating. She didn't want any more drama like they previously had to enroll into their relationship again.

Justin beamed a smile, ecstatic that she had reflected the heartfelt enamor to him. He agreed in her wanting to take things slow because he didn't want to fuck things up between them again. He wanted to do things right and now he had the perfect opportunity. "Yeah, I get it and by the way, I love you too." He says before grabbing ahold of her chin and pulling her into a deep kiss as their lips devoured each other's with ravenous ardor.

Yeah, I'd be happy to talk about my thoughts so far! :D Altho fyi I'm still on the 2nd chapter and I'm playing pretty slowly/taking my time with it, so I haven't met a ton of characters yet. I'm trying really hard to find all the collectables/win the arcade challenges and stuff so I'm going at a snail pace lol. It's been an absolute blast though!

K/omaru's kinda different than I expected her to be tbh but I do love what they did with her! I kind of had it in my head that she'd be more upbeat/heroic and like, stronger/more of a fighter than M/akoto, so to find out she's actually even quicker to give up/very defeatist was a bit of a shock lol. But I do really like it, both for development purposes as the game goes on and also bc she IS what a normal person in that world would be, depressed and scared shitless, panicky even with a weapon, relies a lot of T/ouko. Having the sister of the Ultimate Hope be... not Despair, but just a little less confident like that is very nice thematically. I love her banter with T/ouko a lot, they're funny af together. Not sure if I really ship them? They might be cute but also T/ouko is so 200% devoted to Master B/yakuya that even my multishipper butt has trouble separating them at all lmao. One-sided crush from K/omaru's side would be pretty sweet tho 💛

I don't trust M/onaca. Not even bc she's named M/onaca or bc of her creepy hollow gaze or overly uvu nice routine, but bc she has green hair. In my experience you NEVER trust an anime bitch with the cutesy green hair and golden/green eyes combo. They will be evil, or at least a bit unhinged every time istg. This bitch be plottin 🙃 That said, I'll admit her design is cute af, very aesthetic 💚 and I'm very interested in her development as a character. Her and the blue boi are cute although I'm positive she's going to betray his ass immediately when the moment comes. There is no love in her soulless little eyes and I fear for him

J/ataro (I think that's his name? The art mask boi) is my favourite Warrior of Hope!!! I mean, I'm like 80% sure his mask is made of human skin and I know he's committed many, MANY atrocities (that dancing puppet diorama of adult corpses was... something lmao), but ALSO... he's very polite, easily the nicest of the Delightful Children 2.0. He fixed their air conditioners and chairs and stuff and he's a good boi deep down kind of. Minus the murder I mean. And he has floppy sleeves and likes crafts and the fact that he literally wants ppl to hate him and doesn't think he's worthy of love slaughters my feelings 😭 He's like G/undham but EVEN SADDER and therefore he will be my favourite no matter what awful shit he's guaranteed to pull in the future akdkfk. I'm terrified bc I know in my gut I'll probably be responsible for his suffering if each boss battle is like the red-haired kid's and I'M NOT READY TO DO THAT TO HIM HHHH. I desperately want one of the other gremlin kids to be his friend (maybe the pink or blue one???) PLEASE JUST LET ONE BE NICE TO HIM. LET HIM BE HAPPY. Pink girl: 20/10 design, kinda trash personality but she's also fun lol. Seems to like animals which is a plus. Is mean to craft boi, which is a minus. She's like if G/undham, S/onia, J/unko, and H/iyoko were blended into one evil little gremlin which I find pretty funny. I love that she's the fighter and I look forward to seeing what devastation she'll wreak 👿 She and M/onaca would be cute tbh (but again, I'm sure M/onaca will Ruin Her. Plz run pink child your devotion is going to be for naught c':)

Blue boy: He's a cute, composed boi and I feel bad for him lol. You just know he's going to absolutely snap towards the end. He seems like the smartest and most likely to succeed, which means he's gonna get screwed over big time. I like that he kind of babysits the other gremlins. RIP his crush on M/onaca, he's gonna get his heart broken. Also watching him talk shit to N/agito gives me such life y'all don't even know lmao. Those milkshakes were garbage and he should feel bad.

Red boy: Kinda annoying AF to me personally, but I do feel horrible for him. The scene where he's so desperate to stop his hand from shaking that he bashes it until he breaks it while K/omaru was begging and crying for him to stop was hard af to sit through, GOD. Everything about that scene was just hhhhh

I'm legit so scared to see these other kids break down after that, like goddamn... I don't wanna know what they've been through but also I do ajdjglk. Damn these game creators snipping my heartstrings, I just wanted to make robot bears dance dude 😭

That's all I can think of to say so far ajfkjk, hopefully it's coherent c': I'm thoroughly enjoying the game and it's variety of chars, tbh I think I actually might like it a little more than the 'main' ones :0c Mostly bc it touches on a lot of the stuff I liked about the novels/was implied in other games, it's nice to see the darker takes not be interrupted with as many running gags and such. The easter eggs are super fun too!

Something Really New: Starting Over

Il faut recommencer de zéro. - J.-L. Godard (around 1966)

In order to be clear, let me tell you three seemingly unconnected stories.

In 1983, my phone rang. A young man I had never heard of named José Luis Guerín, who was then, it turned out, aged 23, and who lived in Barcelona, was to have some sort of preview of his first feature film in Madrid, and wanted me to present it. I told him I had to see it and like it enough. Which I did (both) some days later. Once I had agreed to present it, I asked him why he had thought about me. He replied that he had read and liked some of my reviews, especially one, about 9 years before, on Bresson's Lancelot du Lac. I was doubly intrigued, because very few people (and he was only 14 at the time) had liked that particular Bresson movie, and I had detected some Bressonian attitudes in his film, Los motivos de Berta. Thus began one of our usually spaced but very long conversations, which make him always late at some appointment (I feel guilty that he once kept Marcel Hanoun waiting for a very long time). It was already then quite unusual for such a young man to talk about Flaherty, Griffith and Dovzhenko as his contemporaries, just like Godard, Eustache or Garrel, not that even the latter trio were very popular or even widely known among Spanish cinéphiles or filmmakers in the early '80s.

Guerín was, no doubt about it, one of a kind. And he not only kept but steadily surpassed the promise of his first feature. He made, in Ireland, Innisfree (1990), in English and Gaelic, about the memories left around Cong, County Mayo, by the shooting of John Ford's The Quiet Man (1952); in 1996, he shot Tren de sombras (Le Spectre de Le Thuit), practically with no dialogue, in France, which was a fascinating inquest starting from a "found footage" home movie (actually shot by Guerín); in 2000, he filmed at long last his native city of Barcelona, in the copiously awarded (including the National Cinema Award) and very personal documentary En construcción, which made of him a relatively known figure. I seem to have been the first to watch each of his movies, although I must state (since people wonder when they see your name in the acknowledgements section of the end credits) that I merely encouraged him or supported his stand against producers or other people who wanted him to shorten his pictures, a step which would have impoverished them and damaged their precious rhythm. Since En construcción, he has continued lecturing and teaching, spurring youngsters to make unconventional movies, and has been busy preparing a new film.

In a medium-sized cinema like the Spanish one, which is not really an industry but rather a mixture of small business and individual craftsmanship (not always on good terms with each other), the only truly original, ambitious, and interesting films are made by a shrinking group of independent filmmakers, devoted enough to suffer long periods of forced unemployment, frustration, and even poverty. They still believe film could be an art, and try to do something about it. The reluctant "father figure" or model of most of the younger promising filmmakers is, of course, Víctor Erice, and they incur the risk of doing almost as few pictures as he. There are better and worse seasons in such a fragile cinema as ours, depending on how many of these filmmakers succeed in making something (even a short), but 2005 has yielded, for me, a very poor harvest, despite the official, corporate, or complacent opinions voiced by most critics and filmmakers and the depressing box-office success of some of the worst. And, fittingly, the best film of the year does not exist.

Of course, it does, since I've seen it eleven times, in three different versions so far. But it has no official or administrative existence: the Ministry of Culture does not know about it, has not "reviewed" or "registered" it, and therefore, it will not appear in the catalogue of Spanish Cinema: 2005. It has never been publicly shown. At my insistence, Guerín has screened it privately to only a handful of friends, and has so far refused to allow anybody from festivals to see it. All that on the dubious ground that it is not really a film, but merely a sort of photographic blueprint for a future feature, purportedly to be shot on 35mm film stock (instead of with a small, low-definition digital-video camera and partly at least with a digital still camera), in color (the "prototype" is in black and white, since Guerín completely de-saturated it), with dialogue, noises, and music (instead of being absolutely silent, which I feel is how it should stay), without intertitles (whereas it is a film to be read, and it is a vital part of its experience to see the words appearing on the screen, as in some of Godard's later films), and with full normal movement (actually, it looks almost like a feature-length La Jetée, since most of the images are stills; there are only, occasionally, some slight, brief, rather tentative movements, a bit like in some Godard films starting with Sauve qui peut [La vie]).

But it is not at all true, as its author pretends, that this film is a blueprint, or a collection of random notes taken in order to prepare a film, or a preliminary sketch of a film to be made — which, I feel, would be wholly redundant, since Guerín has already made it, and very successfully, in a more innovative and cheaper way. Far from being a pre-production "scale model," it is a minutely edited, carefully structured and rhythmed marriage of narrative and reflection, of recollections and speculation, full of mystery and with an acute sense of unceasing, perhaps endless search, which often makes one think of Hitchcock's Vertigo only to remind you, a moment later, of Jonas Mekas's Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania, or suggest a longer, more complex development of Eustache's late short Les Photos d'Alix. I throw out all these references not in order to boost the film, but to help readers to grasp the very particular nature of a film they are unable to see, and perhaps will never have the chance of getting a glimpse of. And it is something so unique that I find it very difficult to describe.

By the way, it is provisionally titled Unas fotos... En la ciudad de Sylvia... y otras ciudades. Which could be translated as Some Photographs... In the City of Sylvia... and Other Cities. Or perhaps as Some Stills... In Sylvia's City... and Other Cities, or maybe Some Snapshots... In Sylvia's City... and Other Cities. In any case, the title is what I like least about it. It is self-derogatory (although partial, like everything in the world, the film is far from being merely "some photos") and utterly misleading as a description. Its present title does not even suggest the narrative drive that makes the film move (in every sense of the word), even though its images are mostly still and its pacing quite deliberate. It should be called, for example (to change it as little as possible), In Search of Sylvia through Her City... and Other Cities. Even if Guerín wants to conceal how personal and subjective a film it is (I wonder how, and even why? He's shy, of course, but...) and would rather pretend that Unas fotos has nothing to do with an intimate journal.

However, what is really meaningful is the personal starting point of what finally becomes a very peculiar kind of speculative fiction, which made me think of a daylight version of André Breton's Nadja, a book that, surprisingly, the filmmaker has not read. In 1980, in the city of Strasbourg, Guerín (or the unseen, nameless narrator who addresses us silently, in brief written phrases) met a girl named Sylvia, who spoke a little Spanish because she had studied nursery in Salamanca. He either never knew or forgot her family name. The only "mementoes" of their meeting are a box of matches from the café "Les Aviateurs," where they met and talked, and a beer mat with some annotations on it: the address of a local old bookstore that, twenty years later, when Guerín tried to find her, wasn't there anymore.

Considering her profession, Guerín takes a city map and locates the places where she could be: hospitals and clinics, the Faculty of Medicine and such. He roams around these places with watchful, hopeful anticipation. Looking at every girl on foot or bicycle, standing in wait for a date or a green light at a pedestrian passage, sitting in a café or a restaurant. Seemingly without realizing at first that, since twenty years have passed when the search starts, any young girl resembling Sylvia would more likely be her daughter. Looking at women, finally of all ages, without finding Sylvia, he becomes interested, intrigued or attracted by several others, many of them utterly different from Sylvia, and even follows some through the streets of the city, while recalling the love of Goethe for Charlotte (or Lotte), who was also from Strasbourg and who felt jealous when the character in "Werther," who so closely resembled her, happened to have eyes of a different color from hers.

I will not disclose more about Unas fotos, because part of the excitement it produces comes from the surprising connections and associations that Guerín spins. It would lose its almost Hitchcockian suspense, its Bressonian drôle de chemin where "the wind blows where it wills," the sense of strolling through different European cities — what the French call flâneries — which account for a large part of its most peculiar charm. It is enough to suggest that it is a truly European film in its spirit and its cultural references — Petrarca and Laura, Dante and Beatrice crossing paths in the past of cities visited once and again, and making the narrator wonder where exactly, and from what point of view, the poets first saw the women they would become obsessed with — typically a filmmaker's concern.

Only on one point can I understand Guerín's reluctance to show his new film: it is perhaps a new kind of movie, probably too far apart from the commonplace, and the times are not too open to experiences like this. As a matter of fact, I have difficulty in imagining a time when such a film as Unas fotos would be normally shown at your nearest theater, no matter where you live (even in Paris). It is perhaps too intimate an experience for people you don't know to be sitting around you. And the total, hard silence I find so necessary to look at it properly, without the rhythms of any music interfering with those of the film, without sound or dialogue or music announcing, underlining, stressing, or "poeticizing" any part of it, probably would be as dangerous in an almost empty theater as in a crowded house. Most people react quite aggressively towards prolonged silence, they would think the sound was not properly working and start yelling and guffawing, only to realize, aghast and angry, that the film is really, wholly silent. Which would cause a self-defensive reaction against a film that commanded so much attention and concentration on its images as to give no rest, no truce, no clue, no hope of distraction from the screen. Maybe a new kind of cinema calls for a new way of communication with the audience, which could be not a crowd, but individuals or small groups of friends sitting before a TV set, in the intimacy of their own homes. Perhaps it would have to be distributed on DVD or bought online.

On the other hand, I find that Guerín's new film should be seen everywhere, because it provides an exhilarating demonstration of freedom. It proves that, thanks to new, ultra-cheap technology, you can make a great, daring, personal film without money, on your own, with only (of course) a lot of talent, effort, and time, and I find that this could be extremely encouraging to aspiring filmmakers who almost despair at the difficulty of getting started, of convincing producers, and even — the film once made — of getting a fair release. Since the film really does exist, it should be seen. After all, what are films for whose goal is not merely making money? For seeing and for helping others to see.

Guerín has been collecting images for this project during almost four years, and building it up and reshaping and refining it incessantly. For that he needs no money, no funding, no producers. His main investment is his own time. Time to travel and walk, to read and think, to choose angles and frames, to look around and to edit his recollections, the traces of his search. Modern technology allows that for almost no money at all. But DV may be used — it is often — too recklessly; it is too easy. And for a true filmmaker, it should pose some questions. With digital video you can shoot as much as you want, and make very long uninterrupted takes, rather than carefully thought shots; the cameras are so small you may become easily a Peeping Tom or a voyeur, and so light you can hold them in your hand, forget about tripods and move it around all the time, with no apparent need to care about continuity or even about properly framing and composing. As a matter of fact, digital technology has no photograms, no frames, no 24-frames per second speed, no Maltese Cross, no persistence of vision, no projection, almost no shots to cut and link; that is, almost nothing of what has defined cinema for about a century. Even editing is a different issue: digital video encourages a new, quite passive conception of "montage." I'm sure Guerín has read at least some of Serge Daney's disquieting writings about freeze-frame, about stills, about the variable nature of images. I gather he's given these issues some deep thought, and I believe he has, perhaps unconsciously, found a way of avoiding the temptations and facilities and dangers of digital video filmmaking.

His instinct has made him start at the very beginning. With the new, cheap, almost cost-free equipment, and taking as his model not D.W. Griffith or Louis Feuillade, or even Louis Lumière, but rather the very earliest of pioneers, Étienne Marey and Edweard Muybridge, he has found again the true essence of cinema, its forgotten, invisible, taken-for-granted secret: that there are in fact no real images of movement, but only stills, a succession of photographs whose succession creates the illusion of movement. Between each, there is always at least a diminutive, almost unperceivable ellipse, the black blank piece of film between each frame. Godard was hinting at this very problem, I think, when he began employing videotape and started stopping the movement of images, or slowing it down, then accelerating again, so as to render visible the original isolation and the willful, deliberate linking of the frames that allows the passage from one photogram to another, which also explains Bresson's insistently calling what he did cinématographe instead of cinéma: after all, he was writing with the articulate movement of fixed, still images. That's why I consider it some sort of "poetic justice" that Guerín, reinventing cinema with digital means, has returned to the very beginnings, without any sort of sound, not even music or noise, without color, and has employed only the minimal, bare elements, those available when cinema was not yet entertainment, not even a show, but almost a scientific tool intended to look at what you cannot see with the naked eye, and to register it and keep a record, to take notes, to make annotations. But Unas fotos is not merely a remake of the early steps of cinema before Lumière: I don't recall a single silent film that used titles as some sort of inner monologue, as a kind of silent, written equivalent of voice-over commentary, as Guerín does. As the W. B. Yeats poem quoted at the beginning of Guerín's Innisfree announced, "I will rise now, and go...."
