as a teacher, reading about nex makes me fucking furious because I've seen that hate in the students I've taught. people who say young people aren't bigoted and once the old fucks die off the world will be perfect have no idea how cruel children can be when influenced by society's bigotry. while working with 8th grade, i had multiple situations of children harassing lgbt students, screaming slurs at black students, and mocking disabled, especially autistic, students. i was misgendered and degendered by these kids daily without them even knowing i was trans or gay, just that i was a feminine man. i had to dress hyper-masculine to have a smidgen of respect, and god forbid i let my disability show.
but what sticks with me the most when thinking about nex is when i had to intervene when a child proudly announced that she would murder her baby if they were trans (specifically nonbinary) because nb people were freaks, fully aware the person sitting next to her was trans. when i tried to intervene, i was disciplined because i was 'teaching my personal politics'.
this is what our schools look like. when people say they cant believe these girls could do this, i shake my head because, to me, it's no wonder nex is no longer with us. nex was a child with intersecting minority identities. our society is cruel and bigoted, and it is influencing our children. we HAVE to fix society because until we do, kids will stay cruel and kids will keep dying

My high school bully tried to kill me but my Digimon partner (I think it was either a Rust Tyranomon or a Dorbickmon) came in and bit her vagina.

I am sick and tired of seeing shit takes from people about how characters like Sawako (Kimi ni Todoke) and Miyo (My Happy Marriage) are "unfeminist" because they're shy and soft-spoken. When Miyo is literally that way as a SURVIVAL TACTIC because SHE WAS FUCKING ABUSED And Sawako is showed to have social anxiety and the other kids are shown to kind of bully her. But both girls gain confidence and strength as both series progress. NOT ALL WOMEN HAVE TO BE STONE COLD BADASSES TO BE STRONG!!! Geez…

I truly hope that the younger generation isn't being told that when they are being teased or bullied it's because their tormenter secretly likes them.
Somebody liking you doesn't mean they should smack you, pull your hair, tease you, berate you, call you names, make fun of your appearance, make fun of your cultural background or immigration status, or anything else. When you talk about these things, you deserve to be taken seriously. Being written off is a dangerous thing, especially if you are being bullied.
Bullying is not love or admiration.

Could you do the gang with a stage magician reader
Tumblr media
Circus Crew x Stage Magician Reader
Tumblr media
TW: Mentions of sawing people in half (painless), drowning (magic trick), bullying
Type: Headcanons; platonic.
A/N: "Caine, Bubble, and the digital six's reactions to a stage magician reader." I combined the two asks because they were very similar.
Caine
He's so happy. A real stage magician in the digital circus? Incredible! Immediately upon arrival and finding out who you were, he sets you to work showing off all your skills. He just wants to see what level you're at so he can help you to be the best magician in the whole circus!
However, it'll come at the cost of you having to actually do real magic instead of just illusions. The sawing people in half one definitely is traumatising the first time you do it (Kinger assures you he'll be fine). Once you get used to using somewhat-real magic, you actually get to do some pretty mind-bending stuff.
"A human? With skills in circus work? What a wonder!"
Bubble
Bubble doesn't really mind. You were a stage magician? That's good! You must be able to help Caine out then. To be honest, I don't know enough about bubble to say its (or she's? He's? They're?) anything more than just an AI assistant to Caine that is really, really annoying to him.
Either way, it helps out in traumatising you (see: sawing people mentioned in Caine's section).
"Cool!"
Pomni
If you join when Pomni's first there, she's too focused on the exit to care as much. You were a stage magician? That's great! Good for you, genuinely! But would there be any way that could help her get to the exit somehow? Do you know any magic tricks or something? No? Just illusions? Oh, okay.
But if you join when she's started to give up, she does treat you a lot more like a friend. She does admire your tricks a lot either way and is quite impressed by them, she's just too sidetracked with her crisis to focus on you that much. Once she calms down, however, she compliments you on your skills and is interested in learning some herself. She still freaks out when you have to "drown" yourself, though.
"Hey, hey, wait! Get them out of there! Hey!"
Ragatha
Ragatha thinks it's fun that there's a proper circus performer in the circus. Well, maybe you didn't work in circuses exactly, but it's close enough. Ragatha's long given up on finding the exit, and just tries to enjoy her time in the digital world as much as possible. She compliments you on your skills.
She also helps you out when Caine is pushing for you to "run" an activity. Because let's be honest, he'd totally force you to be the lead star of some stuff due to your skills. She also reassures you everything will be fine when your profession forced you to do some less-than-pleasant, honestly traumatising things.
"Don't worry, new stuff. Everything going to be just fine! Kinger won't feel a thing!"
Jax
Jax is absolutely using this to his advantage. Well, when you're friends, of course. When he first meets you, he's really just focused on being a jerk. He'll make fun of you for choosing to try and do "magic" and how you must just miss childhood wonder. He's not that dumb, and can work out (or at least he thinks he can work out) the "deeper meaning" to why you chose your profession.
Once you're friends though, he tries to use it to his advantage. You two will prank the other circus members by getting Ragatha to pull a centipede out of the magician's hat instead of a rabbit, or having an aggressive rabbit be pulled out by Gangle. It's all very fun for him.
"So, you're a magician, hm? Still clinging onto your childhood? To bad you can't go back there--or back home!"
Kinger
He's the "victim" to all your tricks. He's the type to go "no" when asked if he will be the assistant/person performed on when he goes up on stage anyway. In reality, yeah, he doesn't want to do it, but he also knows nobody else will and just does it anyway. He knows it won't hurt.
Outside of shows, Kinger is pretty entranced by some of your tricks. He's very impressed with your never-ending handkerchief one in particular. He asks you to teach him some tricks, perhaps to help fortify his impenetrable fortress or for his acting shows.
"No, I don't really want to do this."
Gangle
Gangle really likes your magic tricks. I imagine she's someone to have two diaries in her room at all times. She writes the day's happenings in one, and keeps a log of everything about herself she remembers in the other. Gangle would happily get a diary for you so you could write down all your tricks!
Your magic tricks always bring a smile to her face. Whenever she's got her comedy mask on, of course. When the tragedy mask is in use, she usually resorts to crying about how much she misses seeing magic shows in the real world. Best to keep it to just the comedy mask times, when she'll thoroughly enjoy it.
"I can feel my memories of the comedy show slipping!"
Zooble
Zooble's cool with it. They know it's all just pretend in the real world, so he's initially not to phased about it. Still, she's impressed with the level of your skill. And when the wacky reality-warping nature of the circus comes into play, you really can do some cool stuff that he enjoys.
To me, Zooble doesn't seem like one that would be very interested in learning all too much about doing magic tricks themself. However, they do enjoy hearing about your shows. It comes with a lot of exciting stories and also gossip, which makes him feel closer connected with the real world.
"So, you're a stage magician? That's cool."

“spop is such a diverse show, it has good representation!”
the diversity and good representation in question:
an abusive lesbian couple
a bisexual couple who were paired off at the last possible moment with no prior romantic chemistry
the only non-binary character is an inhuman shapeshifter who looks like a reptile
the only autistic character is literally leashed by the "good guys" and repeatedly berated for not being normal enough
the only physically disabled character is a villain whose disability is taken advantage of by the abusive catgirl
the half-cat half-human hybrid who displays a lot of animalistic traits including being aggressive and violent is said to be latina
the neurodivergent queer kid is the show's punching bag and is constantly harrassed for the sake of comedy
saying that some of the characters are bisexual feels like an afterthought, as they don't actually show any signs of being bisexual
only polyamorous couple in the show is the bullied queer kid, his bully and the bully's enabler (of sorts)
the only character with a facial disfigurement is another antagonist who is painted as pure evil despite being a lot more nuanced than some of the other characters

NPD culture is
@
YOU ARE AN AUTISTIC KID ENTERING SCHOOL
@
DUE TO YOUR DISTINCTIVE AUTISTIC RIZZ KIDS DON'T REALLY LIKE YOU
@
KIDS EVENTUALLY START BULLYING YOU BECAUSE YOU DON'T STOP TRYING TO INTERACT WITH THEM
@
ADULTS IN YOUR LIFE TELL YOU THAT IF YOU STOP PAYING ATTENTION THEY'LL STOP BUT THIS IS BULLSHIT
@
AS A BONUS YOUR PARENTS GIVE YOU MIXED MESSAGES ON THEIR ATTITUDE DEPENDING ON IF THIS DAY YOU'RE A "genius child who knows numbers and can remember 30 facts about sharks every day" AUTISTIC OR A "unfunctional puppet who is out of energy and can't even write 5 words on her homework and only wants some peace and a nap and doesn't want to do any intellectual bullshit" AUTISTIC TODAY
@
HOWEVER ONE DAY YOU DISCOVER THAT IF YOU HAVE SOME SORT OF POWER ARTIFACT ON YOU, PEOPLE CAN TREAT YOU LIKE A LIVING BEING AND NOT LIKE A ROTTING PILE OF TRASH
@
PARENTS ARE MORE NICE WHEN YOU BRING HOME GOOD GRADES
@
CLASSMATES WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOU WHEN YOU GET A PHONE WITH GAMES AND LET THEM PLAY
@
TEACHERS DON'T NEGLECT YOU WHEN YOU BEHAVE AND SUCK UP TO THEM
@
NPD WIN! NOW YOU KNOW THAT TO BE LIKED BY OTHERS YOU HAVE TO BE SOMETHING YOU'RE NOT AND YOU'LL BE LOVED AND CHERISHED PROPERLY!
@
... ONLY FOR A SHORT WHILE THOUGH! REMEMBER, YOU CAN'T WEAR THE MASK FOR LONG! IT STARTS TO SLIP BECAUSE YOU ARE AN IDIOT WHO CAN'T DO THINGS RIGHT! AND WHEN YOU LET THE MASK SLIP AFTER TWO THREE DAYS OF PROPER BEHAVIOUR, THE HATRED IS BACK! THE DISGUST IS BACK! THE ANNOYANCE IS ALL THE WAY IN!
@
It got less intense with time, though. As you grew out of elementary and out of middle school, people became more decent. Sure they don't like you, but they care abouy their reputation now. They know that if you see a weirdo you just have to wait until they're gone, that saying someone that you want them dead is rude, and that bullying is a waste of their precious time.
@
BUT YOU KNOW! YOU REMEMBER!
@
AND WHEN YOU FAIL A TEST, YOU REMEMBER HOW MOTHER USED TO YELL AT YOU AND TEAR OUT PAGES FROM YOUR NOTEBOOK SO YOU OVERWRITE YOUR HOMEWORK BECAUSE IT LOOKS INCOMPREHENSIBLE!
@
AND WHEN YOUR DESK MATE IS NOT SITTING WITH YOU BECAUSE SHE'S. WELL. SICK AND CURRENTLY AT HOME, YOU REMEMBER HOW NOBODY WOULD SIT WITH YOU BECAUSE YOU WOULD DISGUST THEM TOO MUCH FOR THEM TO EVEN TOUCH YOU, LET ALONE SIT WITH YOU OR TALK TO YOU!
@
AND WHENEVER YOU SEE A TEACHER THAT ACTS LIKE A TEACHER YOU REMEMBER THAT IF YOU DON'T TRY ENOUGH YOU'LL BE HATED AND NEGLECTED AND HAVE YOUR COMPLAINTS DISREGARDED BUT IF YOU TRY TOO HARD YOU'LL BE HATED TOO BECAUSE NOBODY ASKED AND LET OTHER PEOPLE ANSWER AND SHUT UP PLEASE
@
You will always know that people hate you. They showed you that when you were supposed to learn how to interact, so now that's what you learned. You know that you have to do your best to be treated like a person. You know that everyone still treats you like trash and hates the very existence of you but by occasionally throwing in something redeeming you can try to survive a day. You know that your parents are your friends, as long as you perform well and are a good daughter they can show off like a medal. You know that your peers are your friends, as long as you're funny but not like you really are good but not best not best but not horrible communicable but not clingy but like things they like but don't like them too much but express some emotions but not too much wtf but talk to them but not speak too much and speak enough and do enough but not too much but you know what forget it, just be a comic relief to keep them entertained (but not genuine or they'll hate it). You know that teachers are your friends but... Oh, they're not, sorry. They're like parents, but don't care about your success, they're more unstable than children and more crushing than parents and you have no idea how to suck up to them in a way that makes them treat you well
@
You figured the world out! Except you fucking didn't.

Dating Vance Headcanons
Here's the Vance post I promised. Enjoy!
Not proofread lol.
Tw for violence, bullying, bad/abusive home life. Swearing. Death/murder mention.
Okay, I'm going to be straight with you; Vance is an arsehole. All of his scenes in the movie are him being an arsehole and having anger issues. Vance is self-entitled; he knows he's the best at pinball and will physically attack anyone who dares mess up his score. He is not - I repeat, he is not - going to go soft and gentle around you. It's just not who he is.
However, he does like you, so he will be a tad bit nicer to you. And by that, I mean he won't punch you in the face. He'll hold back on the bullying. But don't mess up his pinball game. Don't do that.
So, you can probably tell I don't think highly of Vance as a boyfriend. I don't hate him or anything (not at all!), it's just that, like... Look at him. He is in need of therapy, not a partner. No offense to you, of course! If he likes you he wants you around, for sure. He just needs to take care of himself beforehand. If this guy asks you out that means he doesn't hate you, so he's probably less likely to bully you. So, I highly recommend nicely hinting that he needs to work on himself more before dating you. Please, for your own sake.
Okay, now that that is over, let's start on the fun stuff. Now, assuming that Vance is currently working on himself and has been for a while (which I don't really know how that happened) he'd be a bit of a better person. That means no automatically hitting/hurting people when they mess up stuff in his life. Sure, he still gets into fights all the time, but it's not instinct.
He will, however, gladly kick someone to the ground if they talk smack about you or your relationship. And by kick them to the ground I mean nearly kill them. Vance is not taking anything from nobody. You will have to stop him if you don't want him getting arrested (again).
Also, Vance is not a sweetheart. He will not buy you roses. He will not stutter when talking to you. He will not do any of that. You know what he will do? Avoid you. This man is acting like you have cooties. You'd think he hates you, and rightfully so. It's because he gets nervous around you. He doesn't let it show, but he has butterflies (and he hates it).
Surprisingly, though, once he gets help the relationship isn't too bad. There are ups and downs, but in the end he does put in an effort for you. Crazy, right? And you'd be insane if you didn't put in effort for him. After all, it's not every day you get someone like Vance to like you.
Vance makes time for you. Outside of his schedule of being at school and the Grab n Go, he likes to be with you. Of course, some of this time is spent watching him play pinball silently at the very Grab n Go I just mentioned, but I digress. Other time is spent wandering around town or hanging out at your place.
Vance especially likes your place over his. I headcanon his home life is pretty rough; his father is a drunk like Terrence Blake, and although he actually has his mother around, she feels powerless to do anything and has no job. So, Vance likes to get out of there by going over to yours.
The only problem is his younger sister. She's a toddler, and there's no way he's leaving her at home alone with a situation like his. So, he takes her with him to yours. And this leads to my next point; you better be good with kids. Vance does care about some people, albeit very few. And his sister is one of them. So, if you can't handle her well, then it's going to get rough.
I feel like Vance is the kind of kid to sneak out at night to visit you. Not in some romantic 'oh I missed you so much!' way (or at least he will never put it that way), but more like a 'I'm bored and feeling rebellious so I'm going to go pester you' way. He just knocks on your window in the dead of night and scares the living crap out of you. He just welcomes himself in and settles down in your room without a care.
Okay, well, with some care. He tells you to shut up so he doesn't get caught.
Alright, now onto PDA. Quick version: Vance doesn't like it. Longer version: Vance is touch starved, but he's also got an image to keep. If he's going to stay intimidating while still having a partner then he needs to restrict the lovey-dovey stuff as much as possible. So, that means so PDA at all. Also, it just makes him uncomfortable, despite the fact that he also kind of likes it.
He doesn't even like it in private. Even if he's crying he will refuse a hug from you. It just feels foreign to him, to say the least. He got it from his mother when he was younger, but other than that he's got nothing.
Oh, and by the way, he is never crying in front of you if he can help it. He's got toxic masculinity ingrained into his brain (like, c'mon, it's the '70s). It makes him feel, for lack of a better word, weak. It's the belief he was brought up with, and now it just feels stuck with him. If he were to cry in front of you, he'd try his absolute best to stop it. And if he can't, then he just tells you to go away.
He'd love it if you'd tutor him. I can't remember if he gets bad grades or not (damn the wikis for not having any info on him), but if I remember correctly he does. He doesn't make it obvious that he appreciates it (hasn't really gotten to that stage yet), but he makes up for it by getting you a drink or snack you like at the Grab n Go for free.
Actually, he makes up for most of the stuff you do that way. His main love languages are acts of service and gifts, so it makes sense he'd do that. Vance isn't a boy who's good with word, so just doing things it a lot easier for him. Plus, he can cater it to your tastes to ensure he doesn't mess up.
In conclusion, Vance is a deeply troubled young man. He's going to need a good amount of therapy before he can even think of having a healthy relationship with you. And even once he does get that, he's going to be very quiet. He's not one for big romantic gestures - in fact, he hates it. But he does like you, so he shows his affection through other means. But remember; this is still Vance, and you can easily take all that progress away. So, be careful and be good.

bullying tw
Note: This is heavily inspired by that scene with Flash Thompson and Peter Parker in the Amazing Spider Man movie.
bully!Bakugou who is self-aware...
He says the worst possible things to you regularly and is an expert at making you feel like shit. He prides himself in knowing what buttons to push and exactly when to push them to make you feel like you don't deserve to take up space. As a result, he's attentive so when you're hurting and it's not because of him, he's the first to notice. And he's... weird about it.
You've been moping around all day and Bakugou's just decided he's going to get to the bottom of it, "Oi. What the hell's wrong with you?"
You ignore him.
"Don't fucking ignore me. You know that just makes it worse."
"I'm just not in the mood today, Katsuki. Please."
"When are you ever in the mood, huh?"
'okay that's it," you get up and leave the room. He follows you. Because of course he does.
When you get to your class, he sits down right next to you and watches intently as you get your books out of your bag.
As the minutes pass, his presence starts to weigh on you. It was already difficult to breathe today, but he makes it worse. But you knew that; He never makes anything easier.
Before you fully realise what you're doing, you turn around, slap him across the face, and ask, "What the hell do you want from me?"
For a fraction of a second, a flash of murderous intent crosses his features but then his mouth opens slightly in what you assume is surprise and he puts a palm to his cheek, where you slapped him.
A couple seconds later, he relaxes his face, the corners of his mouth raising up slightly, "There we go... There she is," he coos, never taking his eyes off you.
You're stressed out and overwhelmed and you're tired of his shit (what's new). And the tears start streaming down your face. Because of course they do.
You're so fucking predictable and now you've slapped him.
Sure, he deserved it. But not today. You can't deal with another thing today.
You wipe at the tears violently, like you're trying to push them back into your eyes, anticipating what usually comes next: some wise-crack about you crying.
But he doesn't say anything. He just pulls your hands away from your face gently, like he's afraid he might break you.
He holds them away from your face and watches you struggle against yourself to collect your bearings. The tears don't fucking stop.
The scrutiny burns. He just stares at you. Expressionless. You should feel vulnerable but it feels like he's the vulnerable one in this situation — letting you see a version of him that's neither angry nor pissing you off.
He drops your hands and wipes the tears off your face with the sleeves of his t-shirt (futile action because they keep coming afterwards) and says, "do you want to skip class?"
You take a deep, ragged breath to avoid sounding shaky when you say, "yeah, that'd be nice"
He holds your hand like he's afraid to lose you in the crowd when he walks you through the corridors to an empty classroom.
"Sit down"
You don't react so he sighs and sits you down on a chair himself.
"and- stop crying for fuck's sake," he almost looks sheepish.
For some reason, you cry harder. You can't help it. You're hurting. He's being... strange and it's perplexing.
He rakes a frustrated hand through his hair leans back in his chair, and says, "okay. You have the floor. Cry. However long you need to."

Dear Kat, I've been following you for some time and wanted to ask for your perspective on a subject that's been on my mind lately: euthanasia. (If you'd rather not answer this, you may delete it.)
I recently learned from the news that a woman from the Netherlands, Zoraya ter Beek, plans to die next month because she could no longer bear living with her mental pain. She was reported to be depressed, autistic, with borderline personality disorder. And as I dug deeper into it, I found even more stories of women like her seeking and obtaining assisted suicide. Over and over again, the testimony from the women and their families indicated that it was better if they died.
Needless to say, this was highly distressing to find out, as someone who is also autistic and has dealt with anxiety and depression off and on since I was 13. I've been bullied for the former even before I got my diagnosis and was fired twice in a row because of it. Now I'm seeking a career change and I'm running into the same fears. What if my current employer decides I'm not good enough no matter how hard I work, all because of this thing I can't change? Is this rejection going to follow me for the rest of my life, no matter where I go?
If I recall correctly, you're from the Netherlands, and you strongly believe in supporting bodily autonomy. Should the right to this autonomy include self harm, even suicide?
No, I am not in any current danger in that regard. I want very much to live and educate. My issue is that so many people like me are choosing to end their lives, and the people around them seem to be encouraging it.
I'm not from the Netherlands and euthanasia isn't legal where I live. That being said, I am highly critical of the countries which are implementing euthanasia programs for various disabled individuals while simultaneously cutting down on resources and programs which would allow said disabled people to live full lives while being disabled. I do not think the solution to disabled people suffering immensely in this society is euthanasia, and especially in places where there aren't adequate opportunities for disabled people to actually live full lives, I am actually very critical of offering euthanasia as a solution. Not because I want people who don't want to be here to be forced to suffer, but because it seems like making euthanasia avaliable frees governments and health care systems from making sure other options are actually accessible and adequate. So while ideologically I am in favor of people's right to bodily autonomy, even when used for self harm, I think legalizing and effectualizing euthanasia in this kind of society is very likely to be a slippery slope and an excuse not to invest in disabled people beyond allowing us the freedom to die.

Nina is actually a better person than people give her credit for. Like at the beginning of S1, I had the same scenario with Patricia happen to me: new girl at a new school, trying to make friends, and this other girl in my class didn't like my ~vibes~ or whatever and started saying nasty stuff and trying to isolate me. (thankfully in my case no close friends were kidnapped by secret societies in search for eternal life 💀 ) So not only i can sympathize with her situation, but even relate to it.
And what I don't see talked about enough is ( or if people did, I haven't seen those posts) calling out Patricia's behavior for what it really was: bullying. Keep in mind here, that I understand where Patricia's behavior is coming from, since she's being gaslit like crazy. But that still doesn't make her behaviour towards Nina acceptable or excusable.
And I wouldn't have blamed Nina if she refused to accept Patricia's apology, because is not a victim's responsability ( only their choice) to forgive their bully.
Still, Nina forgave Patricia because she's good like that ( and probably didn't want to break the already fragile ecosystem of the house with more hostility even if it was within her right to keep a grudge and refuse Patricia's apology. )
What i'm trying to say, Nina is a good person, flawed but good.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Hey, it's been a while since I rambled on about Beast things, and I have something in mind. Let's talk about Hank McCoy . . .
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From Earth-1610, the Ultimate Universe.
So, you often hear the generalisation thrown out that the original Ultimate Universe was, widely, garbage and full of far too much 2000s edge to be of worth if your name wasn't Spider-Man. And, by and large, that's true. There is some truly heinous shit in there, and certain issues . . . well, certain issues would likely have trigger warnings if they were made now.
But.
It wasn't all trash.
No, some of it was just tragic.
So, Hank McCoy, recruited to join the X-Men, age 17 I believe? He's your standard Hank - super genius (though that tendency is dialled back in this universe), devilish wit, bouncing, bounding hero with a good heart. Honestly, there's not a ton of differences to him, at least, on first glance. The only major difference is this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh.
So, yeah, this version of Hank didn't have the Edna and Norton McCoy that I spend my life extolling the virtues of. He doesn't have this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He has this.
Tumblr media
Apologies for the language contained within, this is an Ultimate comic. But, yeah, this is . . . this is not great. And it's kind of horrifying to me, to think about how different Hank ends up, depending on how parents. 616 Hank was one of the most moral, lovely, warm, and emotionally open people you could have ever hoped to meet. He wasn't without his problems, but he was all right. He was stable.
Dark Beast, well . . . he grew up in a nightmare apocalypse Darwinist hellworld, so he didn't really stand a chance. His only parental figure was Mister fucking Sinister.
And 1610/Ultimate Hank had . . . them. And that's all it really takes.
Because Hank does have nice things, to start with. He's a good kid. He tries, anyway. He's just a little off in his own head - this is a Hank who's very much of the internet age, so as well as reading books, he spends a lot of his time on blogs, watching movies . . .
Watching a lot of 24 hour news coverage.
Tumblr media
Internalising a lot of things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And eventually it just . . . becomes a little too much. All the insecurities just mount, all the self-hatred becomes a little too acute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, Beast and Storm are together in this universe. Kinda wild, huh?
But it's just so . . . awful, to me, to see him internalising all of this, and thinking that it's true. And the worst part is, he has every reason in the world to think that the Professor does this, because in this universe, the Professor really does do it! All the time! Every single time you thought he might be fucking with someone's head, yeah, he actually is!
Tumblr media
So he has every right to be worried.
Every time he beats back the insecurity, the worry, the fear . . .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It comes back so much more acutely next time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He ends up running from Xavier to Emma Frost, who is. Very different, but still running a Massachusetts Academy, which is going to be government sanctioned. An alternative to Xavier, since they're worried about telepathic interference in the President's head (Ultimate Emma only has diamond skin in this universe, no telepathy). And you know what the kicker is?
The ultimate irony?
Yes, pun intended.
Tumblr media
"He's a teddy bear. He tests well."
People like him. They don't see him as threatening. He's soft, and warm, and intellectual, and he's just . . . every negative thought he has, it's in his head. It's in his head, where it can do the most damage.
Because of this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
God, it fucking kills me.
And then this happens.

Fucking kills me.
In the comments, you see a lot of people haranguing Hank - because of course they do, there are some things that are just multiversal constants - and they just . . . don't get it.
They don't get that self-doubt and insecurity and self-loathing and the fear that you'll never be worth anything, the fear that you never were worth anything, the belief that all you do is fuck up, that no-one could possibly like you for you, that they're all just pretending, it's all just one big joke and you're waiting for the shoe to drop, they don't get it.
Tumblr media
They don't get it.
I have no idea how in the hell Brian Michael Bendis of all people managed to stitch together a decent narrative out of this, considering all the constituent parts he was handed and his limited skill as a writer, but I actually have to give Bendis kudos for once, this arc . . . this arc hit me.
It's one of the great tragedies of the Ultimate Universe, to me. This is the core difference between 616 and 1610 boiled down to one character arc. In one universe, Hank is one of the most popular mutants in the world, a beloved icon, X-Man, Avenger, Defender, the Bouncing Blue Beast!
In another, he never claws out of that pit of insecurity, and it kills him as surely as any disease or Sentinel.

𝗪here'd All The Time Go? Dr. Dog ♥︎ 0:09 ━●────────── 3:54 ⇄ ◁◁ 𝚰𝚰 ▷▷ ↻
♡ — esmeralda has been homesick lately. whether it's for the warmth veracruz provides or the fact that she can't crawl into her father's arms when she's sad, she isn't sure. she misses her mother brushing her hair, and the parties that didn't end until sun up when she'd pass out on rafa. the hustle and bustle of new york city and the mornings spent in homeschool math class. but most of all she misses luna, and the esme she could be for them when they were anywhere but here.
their favorite place lately has been the roof; when you look up, you can see all the stars and constellations, the lack of light pollution illuminating the sky in a way that reminds esme of her favorite nightlight. the shingles of the house don't hurt her back, and when she holds luna's hand she's sure they could never fall; even if they did, it'd be together. so it'd be okay.
but right now things aren't okay, which esme has become adept at realizing in the past couple of years. kids had been meaner recently, spurred on by those movies their mom always does; which esme doesn't really get — can't those idiots tell what's real or not ? their mom isn't a bruja, she's just cool. she's gotten a lot better at brushing it off.
luna hasn't, though. defending their mother came naturally, esme did it too, but her skin's thicker, used to shielding luna from what she could. at age eleven she stands tall ( four foot nine, thank you ) and spits vitriol to any child bold enough to talk mean to luna in front of her. that's the issue, though — they don't do it in front of her now. and she only finds out later, when they're on the roof and luna's crying because it's been a particularly bad day ( which seems to be happening increasingly often ).
" lunita - lunita, esta bien. son pendejos que no saben de lo que hablan. " ( " lunita — lunita, it's okay. they're stupid anyway. don't have any clue what they're talking about. " ). her voice is gentle — she doesn't know to harden it around luna yet, has never had to. luna cries when esme sounds even a little bit mad, she doesn't want to set her off even more.
"¿ya se, pero porque todo via lo asen? mami no ase nada malo. ¡es su trabajo ! she's cool ! " ( " i know they are, so why do they keep doing it ? mami doesn't do anything bad. it's her job ! she's cool ! " ) luna's voice is full of all the emotions the world hasn't tried to wring out of her yet. their words pierce esme's little heart and, if she were older, maybe she'd know how to take them away. right now she can only flounder.
" es como - ¿tu cuerdas lo que dijo papi? ¿cuando vino dante la semana pasada y los junto a todos para hablara? " ( " it's like — you remember what papi said ? when dante came over last week and he sat us all down ? " ) esme props herself up on her elbows, not satisfied with how flippant she seems while laying down. this isn't anything to be flippant about, this is her sibling's feelings. " papi dijo que la jente van a hablara - que no les gusta las cosas que no entinden. so los llamen cosas como raros y brujas y - y es porque son celosos. " ( " papi said people were going to talk, that — that they don't like things they don't understand. so they call us freaks, or weird, or brujas, and — and it's 'cause they're jealous. " )
sometimes she doesn't really know if she believes that. sometimes she thinks it's because her father just wants them to feel better, and that maybe they are kind of freaky. but esme doesn't understand why that would be so bad. she wishes dante could just be with them all the time, so that maybe he could beat them up and then she wouldn't have to be so mean.
luna's quiet in response and it worries her. luna is many things, quiet has never been one of them. the soft sniffle startles esme and she jumps into action quick, pulling luna into her arms. her chin hooks right on top of luna's, like it's meant to, and she's immediately softening her tone even more.
" lunita - ¿habla con migo, porfavor ? tienes que habalar. " ( " lunita — talk to me, please ? you need to talk. " ) tries to pitch her voice down so she doesn't sound like an eleven year old playing parent. it doesn't work.
" ¿no saban que las palabras dañar ? " ( " don't they know that words mean something ? " )
that makes esme freeze. because, well — how does she argue with that ? they've been taught that their entire life. it's a dominguez-herrera motto, at this point. so she pivots, or tries to.
" pues - son estupidos. ya tu deji eso. nosotros no devemos a escuchar a la gente que no son honestos con sues palabras. " a childish attempt at comfort, but it's from a child, so that's to be expected. ( " well — they're stupid. i told you that. we shouldn't listen to stupid people who wouldn't be honest with their words anyway. " )
" ¿pero como yo se que tu no estas mientiendo? " ( " but how do i know you're not lying ? " )
esme considers telling luna that if she were lying, then their parents would be lying, and their entire extended family, too. but she bites her tongue; it'll just hurt them more.
so she pulls away, fishing around in her sweats pocket. luna looks confused, brows tightly knit and fresh tears beginning to well up in her eyes because esme just stopped hugging them. esme finds what she needs quickly — a pocket knife she'd swiped from david at their last party.
she flips it open — luna's more confused for about two seconds, until esme rolls up one sleeve of the snoopy as a dinosaur t-shirt her mother had gotten her for halloween. then their eyes go wide and she remembers the movie they watched the other night when they weren't supposed to be watching tv — the hangover, or something. she'd thought it was really cool and meaningful — what could bond you better than blood ?
she's shaky when she brings the blade to her palm, but her voice is even. if only so luna believes her more, " yo nunca tu a hecho mientieras y yo se que eso tambien su escucha como una mientira pero - vamos as see un pacto. ¿no mas esmos estoy y yo nuca puedo a echar te una mintera, esta bien? y yo nuca tu eviria a ser eso. las palabras si dañia pero tambien tienen otor setimento. " ( " i would never lie to you, and i know that sounds like a lie, too, but — we're going to make a pact. as long as we do this, i can't lie to you, okay ? and i never would. words mean something. " )
and if esme had the vocabulary, or the forethought, or the words to say it she'd tell luna that this means she'd never lie to her. that the blood pact isn't what makes them honest; it's not a truth serum, a sincerity spell, but a representation of her devotion. that as long as she can hold a hand to her palm and bleed freely, she will never lie to the other. so long as she lives and breathes.
but she doesn't, and so she closes her palm around the knife in her hand, slides it across the skin and shuts her eyes tight through the pain. it's almost exhilarating, and it isn't deep. the knife comes out the other side crimson, and she hands it to a now eager luna. the tears are drying up, the sniffles now few and far between, and esme feels invincible. she did it. she doesn't think about what shielding luna from so much harm might lead to, because she's done the one job she's decided to take on for life. and so she can rest a little easier.
" blood brothers. "
" blood brothers. "
luna follows suit quickly after — their shared scrunched up face of determination is sweet. they clasp hands and their blood mixes, they laugh because it stings. then they laugh because they're happy. they stay like that for a bit, hands clasped and curled together like kittens. nothing could hurt them now, not when they have each other. and nothing could bring them dow —
" ¡estrella! ¡luna! mis amores, — ¿porques estan ai riva - tu esta saliendo sangre? ¡¿que esites ?! " ( " estrella ! luna ! my loves, why are you up her — are you bleeding ?! what did you do ?! " )
okay, well, maybe their mom can.

it's weird to think that that was nearly fourteen years ago. that the bullying came to a head a week later and they'd left for new york. esme traces the little scars that litter her left palm, the result of countless blood pacts. countless promises, countless assurances. we don't lie, we don't hide, we're honest all the time.
it makes esme's heart seize and she isn't entirely sure why. she shakes her head to clear it, throwing her bag over her shoulder — she's got an exam to take. can't be thinking of childhood silliness now.
