Even if we were to disregard the impact Georgie had on Jamie's motivations, I really think fear of his dad would have been more of a motivator than hate. Fear of disappointing his dad, fear of what it could lead to
YEAH. I totally agree with you. I think a lot of things about it and if I examine it too deeply I actually get sort of annoyed by the framing of it all in mom city (so I try not to think about it, because mom city is still my favorite episode, lol). BUT:
1) Jamie’s biggest motivator for excelling at football and becoming a pro footballer has always been himself! He fell in love with football first and then put in the work to continue making that his dream. It’s also expressly stated on the show that his dad doesn’t even come into the picture until he’s already playing AND exhibiting enough skill for word to have spread around town, allowing his dad to take notice. So! Of course there were other motivators, including his mom’s encouragement and his admiration for his idols in the game (like Roy) and yes, eventually the pressure his dad was putting on him/his own desire to impress his dad did play a role. But the primary motivator is and always has been himself!
2) for the vast majority of the show I do not get the impression that Jamie even does hate his father. Obviously there are moments when Jamie definitely does think “fuck you” (and those moments do increase as the story goes on and Jamie kinda comes more to terms with what he’s survived), but so much of the tragedy (to me) is how much love Jamie holds for his dad despite everything the man has done to him. Like, the way he acts in season one is because he’s chosen to go down the path his father laid for him rather than one of his own making. And a lot of his early actions revolve around straying from his mother’s gentle guidance towards his father’s abrasive one. At the end of the day, He’s desperate for his father’s approval, to appease his father, and to finally convince his father to love him back. And yes, I absolutely agree that wrapped up in that desire to be loved is a hell of a lot of fear. Jamie’s terrified of him!
3) notably, all of that ^^ makes him WORSE at football. In s1 he’s struggling because doing what his father wants him to is actively and pretty explicitly hindering his ability to play the game well and thrive. So like, he definitely doesn’t achieve greatness because of his father, but rather he achieves greatness when he’s able to let go of the hold his father has over him and lean into his own instincts again.
4) I think Jamie’s two biggest “fuck you dad” moments re: his father are 1. when he decides to quit football to go on Lust Conquers All (telling Ted he did it to piss of his dad definitely wasn’t a lie, but I do think it was only part of the truth. there’s a lot more mixed into it, namely [again] that deep-seated fear) & 2. Wembley locker room (where again, the act Jamie finally takes against his father by hitting him is accompanied by blatant, paralyzing fear.) Jamie has never hated his father without being terrified of the feeling. THAT is what’s going on in Mom City. He’s starting to realize that he does hold hatred/anger for his father and what he’s done to him and the grip that his dad still holds over him, and he doesn’t have a clue what to do with that feeling or how to feel it productively or where to put it.
5) a lot of the way they verbalize this predicament in s3 though feels like they’re weirdly trying to vindicate Ted’s season 2 comment that “having a tough dad makes you great” when 1. That was a completely bullshit thing for ted to say in the first place. 2. It isn’t at all true in Jamie’s case. He’s who he is in spite of his father not because of him.

seeing a lot of talk of the season 5 finale, which is fun, i get that it was controversial (honestly the fact it was really risky is kind of one of the things i like about it lol) and wanting to add my two cents but can't think of much i haven't already said before
but something i do want to emphasize is that season 5 ending on Marinette telling the biggest, boldest faced lie she's ever told (that goes far beyond "protecting her identity") to kick off the Lila arc is by far the coolest thing they could've done imo, because I was not at all excited for the Lila arc before but now I'm totally invested. Now Lila isn't the Evil Liar to be taken down by Good Marinette. Marinette is the liar to be taken down by the very liar that she took down. It's not a story of "defeat that freakishly evil girl" anymore, but instead a story of "Marinette's own actions and decisions coming back to bite her". And the lie itself (WHICH LILA KNOWS IS A LIE!!) only exists because, and is most impactful towards, her relationship with Adrien, which is the core of the series!! I CARE about their relationship, and that's the stakes!!!
I just cannot get over how cool that is, and how much I didn't expect it. I know we all were expecting a big fight with Ladybug and Chat Noir just defeating Gabriel and then watching Chat Noir cry or whatever in the few remaining minutes of screen-time and then it's all over and done with, but that's a series finale. This was a season finale. And they did something really unique and unexpected with it, while making sure it's a juicy season-finale conflict that leaves me actually excited about season 6
also, a side note— I think the framing of the finale made this confusing so I totally get why discussions about it are kind of all over the place, but... 90% of the post-wish stuff we saw had nothing to do with Gabriel at all. It was all Mayor Bustier, who was already running for mayor and wanted to enact green laws and projected to win (she was up against D'Argencourt, the character whose schtick is that nobody ever votes for him in elections). I don't think Gabriel's wish included "Please, Gimmi, I want my son's school teacher to win the mayoral election this year" lol. So a lot of talk of "why is Gabriel's World presented in such a positive light?" is kind of weird to me. That's not Gabriel's World. That's Caline Bustier's. All we know so far about Gabriel's World is that Nathalie is in it and he is not. And frankly, the fact everyone is so happy and cheerful and living it up after his death is more a roast than anything
( also, just a reminder that the presentation of Gabriel's statue— the only scene discussing Gabriel in a positive light by someone In The Know— was done by Tomoe Tsurugi, a series antagonist, vowing to continue his work, with a song in minor key playing in the background. i feel like the question of "was this meant to be unsettling or triumphant?" is pretty obvious. just wanted to remind everyone. also by definition characters cannot celebrate gabriel as a "hero" without in the same breath celebrating monarch's, aka gabriel's, death. yknow? )

sorry if you've posted something like this before and i just can't find it, but how & when do you think suki &/ toph learn the full story of what happened to sokka in the north pole?
this is a great question because sokka is truly such a repressed little freak and so his friends (and girlfriend) will probably never learn the full story unless they explicitly dig for it. like, let’s think about what we know:
katara was there in the spirit oasis when yue became the moon spirit. she saw aang go koizilla mode, she saw yue sacrifice herself, she saw yue become the moon and kiss sokka. i doubt she knows about what exactly was going on between yue and sokka before that moment, but after that, she has a pretty clear picture of the nature of their relationship. the only other person who witnessed it in full is iroh.
aang turned into koizilla before yue became the moon. he probably vaguely knows that she’s the moon spirit, but i don’t think he really registers it, or understands why it matters to sokka. he seems downright confused the few times sokka talks about her, so presumably katara never told him about their relationship.
zuko knows that sokka’s first girlfriend turned into the moon. technically, he was also there that night, but i don’t think he was paying attention to anything other than capturing aang and beating zhao’s ass. so he actually has more information than aang does, because he’s actually aware that sokka considered her his girlfriend (although i would contest that claim, if anything sokka was yue’s mistress), so that’s like. something.
suki knows that “something happened at the north pole” and he failed to protect someone he cared about. she does immediately connect the dots and realize that a girl he liked died and he failed to save her. but she doesn’t know that she was the princess or that she became the moon spirit until watching that play on ember island. at which point sokka gets really mad that she dares to tease him about it, and she gets mad that he’s refusing to talk about it (or she playfully pretends to be jealous? unclear). either way sokka clearly thinks he’s opened up enough and has no need to further discuss it with her.
toph just straight up has no clue about any of that. if katara wouldn’t tell aang, she certainly wouldn’t tell toph, and sokka obviously isn’t telling anyone. although perhaps at some point zuko is like “yeah, sokka’s ex girlfriend the moon, everyone knows about her” and toph, aang, and suki are just like WHAT. why did he tell this to YOU of all people 😭😭

Watched the MLB movie and I just. I WANT to gush about it but the fact that Marinette’s regular voice actor and her singing voice actor sound SO different just took me out of it every time and left me feeling very disengaged;; At least Adrien’s singing voice kind of sounds like his speaking voice (and Gabriel’s is 👌 bc my king Keith Silverstein can actually sing and he can sing REALLY fucking well) but Marinette’s. The voices are COMPLETELY different and it threw me off every single time. Like obviously her singing voice is really good and I understand why they picked that person to do her songs but bro you could have at least TRIED to get someone that sounds similar to Cristina Vee. It drove me nuts every time she sang bc I was like “That is CLEARLY a different person entirely!!”
I’m realizing this might have been a dubbing issue but still 😭 I feel like I would have enjoyed the movie way more if it didn’t look like Marinette was lip syncing the entire time bc there was such a huge disconnect between her speaking and singing voice

A very little detail about luffy that just came to mind (probably not important but pls excuse my tunnel vision when it comes to zolu), but zoro literally was the first strawhats that luffy shedded his tears for???
Mihawk vs Zoro. You can even see his tears falling from both eyes. From the left eye (1st pic) and right eye (2nd pic).
And not only that but i think it happened twice?
You can see rayleigh stopping kizaru from hurting zoro. Then if you look at the bottom panel, after seeing rayleigh you can spot the little snot from luffy's nose and a single tear from his left eye. Luffy was very relieved to see rayleigh, but more importantly, he was very relieved because rayleigh had just saved zoro from kizaru's attack.
Now the more i think about it, those two moments (when luffy cried(?) for zoro) were never really a grandiose one with all the big tears and ugly sobbing. But well, if you think about it, that kind of thing wouldn't be possible(?) not really... cuz at the time when those two situations occurred, zoro was in incredible danger AND with powerful foe/s around. Luffy didn't have the time to properly process his emotions. Like heck after mihawk slashed zoro, luffy even tried to attack mihawk. And with the sabaody arc one, the situation was even more chaotic..
So honestly? Im just thinking about how zoro probably was the first person outside of luffy's family and all of his loved ones from foosha village (imma include shanks and his crew just bcs) that ever made him cry. I'm talking about the 'you are important to me, i care about you, and i don't want you getting hurt/dead' kind of tears, and ughh, idk let me just excuse myself and weep for a bit
That being said, if im not wrong i think zoro and usopp are the only two strawhats who ever made their captain cry twice. (Luffy cried after the battle with usopp (usopp leaving the crew) and after usopp rejoining the crew)

How do you think Velvet flirts with Coco?
This is one of the funniest asks I ever got and im glad cause this is just gold. Like how does the Bun™️ woo her stupid bozo??
————
I have my biased takes on what Coco and Velvet are like as characters, but to start off I wanna focus on what Vel brings to the table.
I think a lot of people have moe’d her down to a nervous/scaredy bunny girl and…that’s not her at all. She’s a real multilayered character who can and will kick your ass flat. She’s also…
- very very attentive to people
- excellent at memorizing things she sees and hears, and quickly at that
- very emotionally in tune with people, herself included
- insanely kind and helpful
- honest about her feelings and will voice her thoughts when ready
Also she’s a bunny like come on. Is baby. It’s impossible to not find her likable.
I can go on forever, but I think these are enough likable traits to work with.
Time to shift. Now we focus on what I think Coco likes in a person:
- Hot girls
- Complexity
- Someone true to their nature
- Some sense of honor
- Someone striving to learn and to better themselves
Hopefully it’s not lost here, but there’s some compatibility don’t you think? Velvet’s got some of those traits that Coco likes.
————
So where’s the flirting? It’s coming I swear, I just needed the background info to help support the answers.
Bun bun flirts two ways: intentionally and unintentionally. The latter is usually what’s happening most often.
Her intentional flirting is what you would expect. Some cheeky words, being a playful tease in her actions like when she flashed her camera in After the Fall. I think she would 1000% take advantage of her physique and incredibly vast skillsets. She is totally totally showing off during training and sparring. Coco might hide her gaze under her glasses but that dumb bitch is so easy. So so easy…
Now her unintentional flirting is basically that Velvet is just doing her thing. She’s comfortable and loved by her team. With them she’s able to be herself and have fun, and that’s what coco loves most. Seeing Velvet thrive and not feel like she has to hide herself away from the world, and with it comes moments and actions that make Coco, much to her surprise, fall for Velvet.
I guess simply put, Velvet flirts by being her cheeky self around Coco, and her leader falls for her every time.
