“I’m sorry, the tryouts are closed!”
You blink. Take a step away. Peek at the huge poster stuck on the huger double doors to the auditorium. The notice says the tryouts would run from four to six in the evening – it’s presently five minutes past five. What the heck?
Around you, you notice a number of girls looking as disgruntled as you feel. You approach one. “Uh, hey…did you already do your piece?”
The girl twirls a vibrant purple strand of hair around her finger and rolls her eyes. “Nope. Choi’s bitch ass shut the doors unannounced ’cause he’s pissed off for some reason.”
Choi? Bitch ass? This girl can’t possibly be talking about the Choi Soobin, right? The prince of the university’s broadcasting club who always emcees every single stage performance the university hosts?
No, she can’t be. No one would refer to the Choi Soobin’s glorious behind as ‘bitch ass.’ Besides, you really don’t think he’d sit around judging freshmen entrants to the club when he’s got so many better, so much cooler things on his schedule.
Choi Soobin the Great has been in this club for three years, two of which he has spent as its president. That, in itself, should be pretty explanatory with regards to how skilled he is at the whole announcer, emcee, broadcast business.
His extraordinary talent with the mic is what inspired you to pick broadcast journalism as your major, in fact. You'd entered the university on jittery, scared steps because you didn't believe you would actually find something that interested you enough to make a career out of. You spent a whole academic year fluttering between psych and communication, aimless and despaired.
But then came sophomore year where you volunteered to set things up for the new freshman batch's orientation week – and that is when you saw Choi Soobin, a fellow sophomore, take the stage and blow everyone away. He was so good with his audience of the new admittees, providing them with all the important information without making them feel nervous because he used the perfect amount of jokes as a buffer.
It was love at first sight for you.
Okay, like, not like that. You did end up making an altar for Choi Soobin the Great where you continue to worship on the daily because he's a god on stage, but what you actually fell in love with was the art of emceeing.
So you registered your major in your third semester and began to work on polishing your skills. Now, two semesters later and midway through the junior year, you finally feel confident and prepared enough to enter your God's actual, holy shrine and join his praying circle.
…maybe you should stop with these metaphors before it gets weird.
Anyways.
Case in point – unlike this uninformed rodent of a girl who found it fit to disrespect your role model and gave up on these tryouts in favor of rolling her eyes and complaining in the hallway, you are nothing if not strong-willed.
You are finally ready to do something about your one true passion that you can actually see yourself pursuing professionally after college. Being part of the university's broadcasting club means guaranteed dream job; you've seen it happen with your eyes for two consecutive years. You're finally ready to follow suit; finally ready to join the ranks of the elite and learn from Choi Soobin the Great himself – and you are not about to let a gruff call of  "tryouts are closed" from an overworked janitor deter you.
Checking this way and that for any onlookers, you sneak off to the narrow passage to the side that you know connects to this auditorium's back door, and in turn, the cafeteria. You're just gonna casually stroll through it, maybe loiter a bit around the doors until someone from the judges panel steps out so that you can beg them to give you a chance. And if someone catches you? You were just looking for the cafe!
It's the perfect plan.
Until, that is, your loitering ends with the legend himself, Choi Soobin the Great stepping out of the backdoor and freezing you to a statue.
You've seen the man from afar more times than you can count on both hands. You're a true fan, a great admirer, a semi-obsessed devotee (?) of his. But never once have you seen the guy from this up close. Needless to say, your brain's short circuiting a little.
Three things strike you all at one – that the university's emcee prince did, in fact, sit in to judge freshman entrants to the broadcasting club despite his various busy schedules; that the purple haired female auditionee actually did call this great man's glorious behind 'bitch ass' like an uncultured heathen; and finally, that Choi Soobin sporting a combination of dark black hair, bright red lips and stark white t-shirt should be banned because it can cause brain malfunctions in people.
Because while the guy's eyes widen and then squint as he looks at you, and mouth opens as if to say something to you – you stay absolutely frozen, literally turned to stone without a single muscle moving in your body. Including your lungs that are jammed because you're pretty sure you aren't breathing.
"Um… can I help you?"
Oh shit, his dimples…
His dimples!
You realise this is entering borderline creepy territory but you can't help staring at him. He's just so pretty. Though your brain functions are still experiencing a slight lag, you're starting to realize that your crush on the guy is winning over the admiration and respect you have for his talents, at the moment.
He's ethereal. He's unearthly. He's the most beautiful guy you've ever met. You're a simp.
"Excuse me?" Soobin's head tilts to the side in confusion. "Can I help you?"
He definitely can, in more ways than one, but that conversation is for another time.
His impatiently raised eyebrows suddenly push you back into motion, breaking your frozen state, but now you're on an overdrive, very close to hyperventilating in front of him.
"H–hey! I mean, h–hi. I mean, fancy bumping into you here! N–not that we bumped, just, uh—haha, you know? Fancy – fancy seeing you here, how have you been?"
Oh
God.
Did all of that just exit your mouth?
You need a shovel because this calls for digging up a hole and burying yourself alive. What the fuck is wrong with you?
Your entire face feels like it's caught on fire, and all the nerve endings in your body are tingling from embarrassment. You feel like you're vibrating. Wait, if you vibrate at a frequency that's outside of the visible range, can you voluntarily make yourself disappear?
The only thing holding you back from combusting into flames is the amused smile that replaces the previously formal tilt on Soobin's lips. "Hi. I'm sorry, where do I know you from? You look very familiar, but I'm just missing it…"
You look familiar? So he does notice you in class! Maybe getting that hair spa last month has worked in your favor, after all. You're getting a little googly eyed, but you do your best to control your reactions as you gauge his.
He looks so darn cute with his dimpled smile that makes his eyes squint, that you're left gaping for a couple of seconds before you're able to notice the hand he is forwarding you. Nodding haphazardly, you forward yours and let him wrap his huge palm around your significantly smaller one. Even though you try to repress it, the warmth his skin emanates sends a shiver running through you.
If Soobin notices the subtle shake your body gives, he doesn't comment on it.
He's being so angelically patient and kind, you need to get it together!
So you clap your hands in front of your face and pull your lips up in a smile, preparing yourself to say your thing without any unnecessary words this time.
"Uh, I'm – I'm in your class? I don't know if you know me, but I know you! I'm, um, I'm here for the broadcasting club. And – and I noticed that the banner said that the tryouts would run from four to six, but I've been told that the gates have been closed when it is barely past five, so I was… w–wondering…" You slowly trail off, stuttering a little when Soobin's facial expressions do a sudden one-eighty.
Gone is the sweet, dimpled, kind guy who was smiling at you with his eyes. Now his lips are pursed and eyebrows furrowed, a clear look of irritation on his face. Well, he's still got a dimple showing, but this one's part of his frowny face so you're not sure if you should be admiring it anymore.
"Wow. You're gutsy." His tone has changed now, too, really stiff with an underlying scoff in words. "Did you follow me here?"
You blink in surprise. "What? Of course not! The – the main doors were closed, so I was looking for another way in and—"
"Good God, please stop talking," he interrupts you with a groan, rolling his eyes as he tilts his head to look skywards – and you're fully paralyzed now, clueless and a little scared because Soobin looks so mean and intimidating with his eyebrows scrunched up like that. "I don't get what you guys' problem is. I'm – I'm trying to do something serious here. Why the hell do you not get it?"
Blinking slowly, you gape at your idol, your icon, the deity of all things broadcasting as he yells at you about something you can make neither head nor tail of.
'You guys'? Who?
You know that you of all people definitely get that he's doing something serious. You're as much, if not more, serious about the club yourself; the reason why you've taken so long to decide to audition for it. Besides, how's he judging you when you've never met before?
Willing your frozen lips to move, you attempt to clear the air. "We've – we've never met before. You don't know me. I'm—"
"Oh, I know you enough." This time there is vitriol in his eyes as he spits the words, and you take an actual, vary step away from Soobin. "I've been through twenty auditions and seen fifty applications in the past hour and every single one of the girls like you is dying to get to interview the hockey team and talk to Yeonjun about his strategy for his final season in college. So I know exactly who you are and exactly what you're after."
He is rolling his eyes again, this time with both his hands braced on his waist.
But his words are very confusing and a little hurtful. Why is he grouping you with whatever 'girls like you' he's seen so far? You've been a fan of Soobin for a while now, but you've never encountered any instance of even a mention of him being anything less than courteous and big hearted.
This attitude from him feels like living a fever dream – and not of the good kind.
"So for the last time – I'm not taking any of you groupies into this club because it is not a means to get into the hockey captain's pants! I need serious people who look at announcing and broadcasting with respect and not as something they can use as cover for their ulterior motives. Oh, and if it means anything to you at all, Yeonjun hyung has a girlfriend now. We probably won't even be covering him at all because his fangirls are always a bit too much."
Your head is spinning a little now.
Did he call you a groupie? Yeonjun's groupie? He thinks you're doing this to get into Yeonjun's… what the hell?
While you're still processing his previous words, Soobin gives a wince. "Look, I'm sorry if all this sounds harsh, but you've left me no choice. Trying to corner me was a really low blow, okay? There's a limit to acting desperate and you're clearly crossing the line, here. If you can't respect me or the club, at least respect yourself."
The pieces have finally fallen in place in your head. You couldn't make sense of it earlier because you didn't really allow yourself to think Soobin would go there. But given his last statement, now you have no doubts.
You don't live under a rock – you really can't afford to when you dream of joining the broadcasting club, of all things – so you obviously know hockey captain Choi Yeonjun and the hype surrounding him. And because you always do your homework well, you also know that he used to be somewhat of a serial dater before he got into a serious relationship with his long time best friend, just last month. All of Yeonjun's fangirls across campus have been disheartened by this development and have been acting desperate ever since.
But why on earth has Soobin pegged you as one of them escapes you. You did not say a word about the hockey team. You didn't get to tell him what your goals actually are. Hell, you didn't even get to tell him your name before he shut you down.
This is a very overwhelming generalization, and you really wanna give Soobin the benefit of the doubt here because going through fifty bullshit applications can be a lot – but he needs to hear you out for you to do that.
"Soobin," you try again, raising both your palms up in an attempt to placate him, "I don't know how you're getting this idea, but I'm not one of – one of Yeonjun's groupies, or whatever, okay? I literally told you I'm in your class."
“Look, I really don’t have time for all these tales,” Soobin interrupts you with a sigh, a huge hand raised up to shut you up – so you do. “You’re dressed… too prettily to be trying out for the broadcasting club, anyways. Is that a cheerleading skirt?”
He's looking down his nose at your miniskirt that you felt very pretty in, annoyance on his face, and now –
Now you're hurt. Now you're hurt beyond giving him the benefit of the doubt. Now you're hurt enough for your eyes to sting with offense.
“Are you trying to pass a judgment on my…clothes?” you ask him in shock, your voice low and a frown creasing your forehead.
He looks a little uncomfortable as he clears his throat. “I’ve seen the way Yeonjun’s fangirls dress, and you kinda… fit the description.”
He really isn’t giving up on the groupie allegations…
In any other scenario, you would honestly take that as a compliment. Because you have seen these girls as well and their appearance is honestly on another level. But this guy in front of you definitely means it as an insult. And he is still scowling, as if you have dressed up to personally offend him.
You’re at a complete loss now. He hasn’t let you talk, you haven’t even told him your name, and he is acting like knows everything about you. His mind seems fully made up too.
What are you supposed to do?
"You know what? Maybe I… I should leave through the front door,” he murmurs in your general direction and then moves to step back through the gates he’d emerged from.
You just stay rooted to your place, offended at his dismissal and still in partial disbelief.
Choi Soobin is nothing like anything you thought he was.
The smiling, giggling, squinty-eyed guy that you always heard being called kind-hearted, warm, understanding and sweet? Cannot be the same guy you just met. Part of the reason why you like him so much has been the overwhelming amount of praises you have heard about him.
At times, you found yourself wondering how such an important and busy guy could muster enough patience to be a sweetheart to everyone. Now you know that it’s all a sham – a character he has created to showcase. It’s all pretend.
This, the version of him you just met, is what the real Choi Soobin is like when no one’s looking.
Not just your crush, but your idol has broken your heart.
How are you gonna move on from this?
"Y/N!"
The sudden shout of your name makes you jump in surprise, wide, watery eyes turning to the end of the hallway. Soobin has stopped in his place as well, a frown on his forehead as he attempts to follow your gaze – but he's a little off center from the curved hallway to be able to locate a bubbly looking Yeji excitedly waving at you.
Oh fuck. Not right now. You don't need your best friend to witness you experiencing the worst moment of your entire life.
But Yeji being the loudass clown she is, doesn't stop speaking at the top of her voice as she marches down the hallway to you. "Where have you been? The janitor says they closed the tryouts? Did you pass? Oh, and a girl told me Choi Soobin was in the judging panel! Did you get to see him?"
Your eyes jump wide, traveling to the said guy involuntarily to witness the way confusion overtakes his face. He isn't moving, though, probably out of intrigue now that he has heard his name, and you're halfway scared to death that Yeji is about to reveal your secret and bathe you in the kind of embarrassment that you will never be able to live down.
"Yeji, I'm just—"
"Babe, why do you look so pale?" she cuts you off, squinting as she nears you, and before you can get another word out, her lips are tilting mischievously and eyebrows are wiggling. "Did Choi find out about your obsessive crush on him? Did he kick you out? Are you hiding from him?"
Yeji is done walking up to you and is now standing with her back to the still open door to the auditorium to look at you with her head tilted and hands braced on her waist. But your gaze is stuck to the person whose face you can easily see over her shoulder.
Soobin's eyes are impossibly wide and mouth is parted to allow his bunny-like front teeth to peek out. There's a subtle flush covering the top of his cheekbones, ears and the bridge of his nose – a sight that would've had you cooing in adoration if you weren’t so distraught, right now.
And then his lips move to form a broken sentence that makes you want to stab Yeji and then yourself: "You… obsessive crush… me?"
To her credit, Yeji seems to recognise the guy's voice and also the context of this ridiculous situation pretty quickly. Her eyes grow wide immediately before a wince overtakes her face as she mouths the word 'sorry' to you, probably mistaking your fallen expressions to be a reaction to the chaos she has caused. Little does she know.
Just as she has stepped aside, Soobin takes a step closer to you, heavy guilt and bewilderment sewn into the lines of his forehead and the twist of his lips. It's so weird that your heart is still skipping a beat when his gaze searches yours.
It's so unfair.
You inhale deeply and shake your head, though, steeling yourself against his deceitful innocent eyes. His dimples are just a facade to hide his arrogance. You know better now.
"Not anymore, don't you worry," you tell him with your chin lifted and eyes narrowed.
And damn, you feel so brave for that one. Especially because the words aren't even true. Getting over him will be a hefty task and you have no idea where to even begin, because your life has pretty much revolved around the guy for over a year.
Soobin frowns at that, looking almost hurt, and you want to laugh in his face at the hypocrisy. But you've had enough of him judging you and you're also ninety-eight percent sure you will end up crying if you tried to laugh, so you choose to just grab onto an embarrassed and confused looking Yeji's wrist and tug her with you to the other end of the hallway, exiting into the college's cafeteria.
"Babe, that was—ow!"
Yeji is cut off by you smacking her upside the head. "You're so fucking stupid, Hwang."
"I know… I'm sorry?"
"Shut up, you’re buying me lunch."
Tumblr media
The next day, while you’re supposed to be attending your Media Law class, a mandatory course in your major, you find yourself sitting (read: sulking) in a corner of the library by yourself, staring at the laptop in front of you unseeingly. Your attendance is good enough to save your grades and you can beg Chaewon for notes later in the week.
But you truly don’t have enough mental strength to face the class’ star student after the shitshow that went down, yesterday.
While Yeji bought you lunch yesterday, you filled her in on everything that happened. Your best friend provided you with a shoulder for your tears, some tissues for your snot and four golden words of advice: never meet your heroes. Because now everything is ruined, and you’re beginning to wonder if picking this major was even worth it when the reason why you did has turned out to be a sham himself.
Your phone suddenly pings with a message, breaking your chain of spiraling thoughts.
11:03 | yeji 💘 dood. guess who i bumped into omw to the chem lab and guess what he asked me for
You blink and then squint at your phone. Why is your best friend trying to be so mysterious?
↪ wtf ji…? ↪ who asked u for what? ↪ are u okay?
11:05 | yeji 💘 what? yeah i’m okay choi soobin asked for your number
What?
↪ yeji… ↪ tell me u didn’t give it to him
11:06 | yeji 💘 of course not bestie <3 i told him to talk to you in person he’ll be there in a min good luck! 💋💋💋
You hadn’t even fully inhaled your breath of relief at Yeji’s first text when she cut it short with the next one. In person? In a minute?
Did Yeji tell him where you are?
“Uh, hey… Can we talk?”
She did. Shit.
Even if you don’t lift your gaze from your phone, Soobin’s tall form blocks the incoming light from the window you were seated next to and casts such an obvious shadow on your form that you cannot ignore him without making it weird. So you lick your lips and collect your nerves, preparing yourself to face the guy who single-handedly inspired and then shattered your future plans.
Soobin looks as devastatingly handsome as ever, dressed in a white, collared shirt. His hair is just as black, lips just as red, but there’s an additional pair of thick, black, round-framed glasses sitting on his eyes this time that make your heart beat faster. He just had to look like a runway model in glasses. The universe hates you. Figures.
The expressions on his face scream clear distress and the guilt you saw yesterday. He’s nibbling on his bottom lip, which is a great sign because his bitch ass should be antsy about his audacity of talking to you now when he didn’t wanna listen to you yesterday.
Wow. Maybe that purple haired girl really was onto something, yesterday. Choi Soobin’s derriere is most definitely a rude and a bitch ass.
Looking down at your laptop, you clear your throat and ask him, “What do you wanna talk about?”
You don’t ask him to sit, you do not smile, don’t even wave back in response to his lame ass ‘hey’ – just cut straight to business. You’re proud of the way your voice sounds the right amount of impatient and careless.
“I… I owe you an apology.”
That has you looking at him again. He’s frowning now, looking so conflicted, you almost soften. But then you stop yourself. This is probably not even that heartfelt. He heard about your crush on him and now he pities you. You won’t be a vessel for him to pretend to clear his conscience when he wasn’t even willing to get off his judgemental high horse for you.
“Soobin… don’t.”
He takes the seat opposite yours, ignoring your eyebrows that rise up in shocked outrage. "I have to. Please."
"You really don't—"
"I was horribly out of line, ridiculously ignorant, unprofessional and – and an asshole."
You blink at him in mild surprise. At least he knows; that’s an oddly good start. "You can say that again."
He removes his glasses and rests his elbows on the table, leaning towards you with wide, desperate eyes. "I do not expect you to forgive me, I just need you to – to know that I'm not… I'm not who I was yesterday. That's not – I was under pressure and I felt irritated, insecure and a little jealous? And I said everything I didn't mean. Especially that comment about your dress up! I didn't mean it, I swear! You looked pretty, your skirt was really cute, okay? I – I didn't mean to insult you, I would never stoop to that level."
Your cheeks involuntarily heat up at the compliment he tosses at you so casually. "Why say it when you didn't mean it?" you mumble, attempting to hold your ground and stay mad because he's saying all the right things to weaken your resolve and give him an ear.
He hangs his head as if in shame. "Because I'm a moron. None of the stuff I said was aimed at you. As you said, we hadn't even met before, and… I was frustrated and tired and just drew all these wrong conclusions about you and went off like an idiot. I feel so horrible. I'm so fucking sorry..."
Very slowly, you lean back in your chair and shut your laptop. He really knows how to apologize, damn.
You were preparing to knock Choi Soobin off the throne you had him sitting on, mentally, and then crush that very throne to pieces because if he could disappoint you like this, you were determined to never look for another role model. You were preparing yourself to leave Choi Soobin and his arrogance in dust and move on with your life.
But now here he is – apologizing like the decent human being you always thought him to be, saying everything you’d never admit you needed to hear.
He’s climbing back upon the throne that took you a whole day to make up your mind to remove him from.
You’re kinda pathetic, to be honest…
In an attempt to regain some of the dignity your inner monologue has stripped you of, you frown at him. But you are definitely intrigued now because if the kindness and sweetness he shows everyone is a facade, why is he being kind and sweet to you in private?
Could there possibly be… an explanation for his behavior yesterday? He said he was under pressure and frustrated. Although you understand the former, given his position and the auditions yesterday, you don’t really get why he would be frustrated.
When you meet his gaze again, you find Soobin looking at you with those wide eyes of his spilling desperate hope. So you decide to bite.
"You – you keep saying you were frustrated… Why was that? "
He thumps his head against the table with a groan, making you jump a little in surprise, and then looks up with a determined expression on his face. "I'll begin from the beginning. I owe you that much."
"You really don't owe me any—"
"Please, Y/N."
Oh. Did he say your name? Oh.
Wow, this is why crushes are horrible. Now your heart is thumping wildly and your face feels really hot. Honestly, there should be a system where one can run a background check on an individual before they can be deemed safe enough to be crushed on so that one doesn’t end up embarrassing oneself.
You can only hope your face hasn’t heated up to a noticeable degree.
"I… Since the day I was made President of the Broadcasting Club and was given the duty to conduct interviews for the different sports teams our college has, there’s been this – this recurring pattern. Huge throngs of girls that want to join the club for a chance to interview the hockey team and get close to Captain Choi.” He gives a tired exhale and runs a hand down his face. “I’ve seen it repeat every semester. And this time it got really out of hand because I actually decided to sit in for the tryouts…”
You didn’t even notice when you leaned on your elbows to mirror Soobin’s seating position and focused your eyes on his face, so when he looks up to meet your gaze, your breath catches for a moment. And then you see absolute, sheer tiredness reflected by his brown orbs.
He cannot be this good of an actor, can he be? That would mean that he's really been going through something with this whole insincere signing up for the club thing.
"It was really wrong of me to explode on you the way I did," he continues in a softer voice, looking down at the table next to his palms. "I assumed you were one of the girls that had been giving me a hard time and… didn't even let you say your thing. I'm really, terribly sorry for being a jerk to you."
Your jaw drops a little at the sincerity that spills from his apology. He doesn't sound like he's doing this to clear his conscience or out of pity – he sounds really regretful. He almost sounds like he's in pain, in fact.
Does he really feel that guilty?
He would only be feeling so bad about this if… everything he has said so far is the truth and he’s actually not the kind of person he painted himself as, yesterday. You can sense the way your previously drawn conclusions begin to dissipate little by little.
"After you left," Soobin begins again, this time with a slight twinkle in his eyes and a tilt to his lips that makes his dimples pop, "I went looking for your application form and read about your interest in announcing. You… you picked your major because of me?"
Your cheeks are definitely on fire now and there’s no way Soobin can’t see that. Why did you put that in your form, you embarrassing imbecile?
Well. If Soobin has been gusty and virtuous enough to come looking for you and make an attempt to honestly explain himself and apologize, maybe you can be a little honest with him as well.
"You see… the freshman orientation you hosted last year left an impact on me," you reveal, unable to look at him. "And then I saw your sports coverage and realized that I want to be a sports announcer in future."
Soobin says your name, making you look up and meet his soft gaze. "I never thought I would do anything in life that would be worth an inspiration… so this means a lot to me. A lot.” His eyes are shining with sincerity and emotion, and you’re looking into them, spellbound. “I am so sorry I hurt you and I’m ready to try and make it up to you for as long as needed. I don’t really expect you to accept my apology, like I told you, but if you would please give me another chance, I would like to show you who I really am. And maybe initiate you, if you’d like?"
He finishes with a sweet, dimpled smile and maybe that is to be blamed for the way his question bounces right off of you.
"Initiate…me?" You cluelessly blink at him.
"Yeah. Into the club. All the members went through your application and some samples of you emceeing. So it’s not just mine, but everybody’s decision. Insistence, if you will. Request? We – we’d really really like to have you on our team."
Your eyes jump open very wide at that. Join the club of your dreams? He’s finally offering you the spot you thought you’d lost forever?
Wait, did he say samples? Of you emceeing?  What?
"I’m sorry, what samples?"
A blush tinges his ears. "I contacted your friend Yeji about this, last evening. Please don’t be mad at her, she just wanted to help you. She told me how much this means to you… and then sent me a couple of clips of you managing a stage during a kids’ talent show in your neighborhood. You were really impressive, Y/N."
Holy fucking hell, you're going to scream.
First at Hwang Yeji for going behind your back and selling you to the enemy, no matter what her motivation might’ve been. And then because your idol just complimented you on something you've learned from him.
"Th–thank you, Soobin." You bite your lip at the stutter in your voice, peering up at him with hesitant eyes. And then you decide to be honest with him again: "Your praise… means a lot to me."
Soobin's eyes sparkle at that, a warm smile pulling at his lips. "And I promise to always remember, respect and honor that. Just one chance?”
You stay like that for the next few moments, looking at him with a soft gaze.
You’ve been polishing your skills to prepare yourself for a spot in this club for a year. If you had gotten the chance to audition normally yesterday, there is no doubt in your mind that you would’ve made the cut. So wouldn’t it be unfair if you give up now?
And then there’s Soobin, of course. It’s going to take you some time to trust him. But if he says he’s willing to work on it, says it with a sincerity in his eyes that gives you goosebumps, you believe it’s worth giving him a chance to correct the misunderstanding he caused yesterday.
You exhale, mind made up, and nod at the guy tentatively. “Promise me you will hear what I have to say before you draw any conclusions?”
He leans closer to you, bringing his face at the same level as yours and nods eagerly. “I promise. Cross my heart and hope to die. Do I take this as a yes to joining the club?”
His eagerness makes you crack a smile, which causes Soobin to scrunch his nose bashfully. You inhale deeply and give him another nod. “Yes, you may.”
Tumblr media
Time flies really fast after that day as you attempt to find a stable way of juggling your classes and the club duties.
The work isn’t as much in bulk as it is in the details. Soobin is, as you’d known beforehand, a meticulous perfectionist. Every single activity the club is involved in has to be fully planned in bullet points and a step-wise-step itinerary, and uploaded to the club’s shared Google Drive, days in advance, or Mr. President begins to lose his calm . You, being the newest addition to the bunch of six experienced members, are mostly tasked with assisting the guy on building this very itinerary.
Not that you mind.
The more time you spend next to him, witnessing him in his element up close and actually getting to peer into the creative wonderland that his mind is, the more you find yourself in awe of him. He has been a role model to you for a reason, after all.
With each passing day, you pat yourself on the back for taking a chance by accepting his apology as you slowly begin to see the real him – the version of him that is absolutely nothing like the asshole you met that day. And little by little, your trust in him begins to grow.
Soobin, to his credit, doesn’t leave a single stone unturned to make you feel welcome into the club. He is incredibly patient and delicate with you – always pausing to check whether you have been keeping up with all the new stuff or if you need any guidance.
You’re beginning to understand that it is in his nature to be kind. The word that got around about him has been correct all along – he really is gentle, understanding and sweet. And if he is going an extra mile for you with the intention of appeasing you because he is apologetic? Well… he’s damn well succeeding.
The two of you have quickly fallen into a routine where you attend your 10 am Media Law class together, collect the communication majors Karina and Jongho from their block, and then report to Arin—the only senior in the club and known to be an effortless ace—in the broadcasting room. After a short briefing about the previous days’ tasks and a rundown of the fresh day’s checklist, you and Soobin depart to the library to work on it.
After that you both attend your separate afternoon classes, meet up at the broadcasting room at four in the evening for the college announcements that are alternated between Yunjin and Jongin, sophomores and the final two members of the club, and the lot of you finally take your leave some time around six.
The first week is so exhausting for you that you are barely left with enough strength to feed yourself before you collapse into bed every night, let alone think about your academics. You don’t even text Yeji for three whole days, until she accosts you in the library.
Soobin texts you, that evening, sharing tips on time management, task management as well as a small list of snacks that he munches on to retain energy. To say your heart nearly beats out of your chest at the gesture would be an understatement.
The following weeks are full of you being on the receiving end of more such thoughtful acts by Soobin. Getting you coffee – one that is made exactly the way you like it – before the evening meet-up, walking you to your dorm if you don’t have anyone from your building accompanying you, repeatedly checking in to ensure you’re well-rested and not overwhelmed by the sudden change in your routine.
And then there is that one time, some three weeks later, when you're filling in for an absent Yunjin and make a mistake during the announcement – landing yourself at the receiving end of Arin's ire. You feel really bad about your mistake as it is, and so the addition of a reprimand from the senior you've come to look up to has you immensely low.
"She said it was a mistake, noona."
Your head snaps up at Soobin's firm statement. His eyebrows are furrowed and arms are crossed as he looks at Arin. You, along with three other pairs of eyes, gawk at the rare sight of Soobin getting angry, and the rarer sight of him going against the club's queen.
"She's apologized thrice. What more do you expect?"
Arin looks taken aback at the brusque interruption, but doesn't put up a fight against the president. "She needs to practice her pauses, Soobin."
"And she will. I'll make sure she does." He gives a small nod to her before turning his gaze to you. Put in spot, you stare back at him with wide eyes. "I'll stay with her while she practices."
Flashing you a small smile of reassurance, Soobin turns back to the other girl and pats her shoulder to calm her down. And because no one in powerful enough to maintain a frown when Soobin unleashes the power of his dimples upon them, Arin eventually smiles in defeated acceptance and dismisses the meeting.
But your heart never quite manages to dismiss the way this incident makes you feel.
Because Soobin holds true to the promise he made as well – accompanying you to the college's courtyard whenever you're both free and practicing speech with you. To be really honest, he seems to be wanting to spend all his free time with you. You find yourself having to say no to his texts at times because you have plans with Yeji, or are too tired to function.
You'd be lying if you claimed that having so much of his attention on you doesn't make your heart to somersaults in your chest. Which is why you begin to wonder where his extra mile of apologetic appeasement ends.
The whole apology acceptance thing happened between the two of you awhile ago. He really shouldn't have a reason to continue to dote on you as if he has been hired to take care of you. Last time you checked, you were the one with a gigantic crush on him and not the other way round.
A few explanations pop up in your head, but none of them feel plausible enough for you to even think about. So you do the next best thing – share your dilemma with Yeji on an impromptu girls’ night in, one Saturday.
For a moment, your best friend squints her eyes in the way she does when she’s analyzing some complex situation. And then she shrugs a shoulder, pops a pretzel in her mouth and announces: “Sounds like he’s got a crush.”
You blink, caught so off-guard that you’re stunned into silence. It is only when she looks at you with her eyebrows raised that you manage to cough out a scoff. “What? Don’t be ridiculous.”
This time Yeji’s the one to scoff. “Excuse me? What’s so ridiculous about him liking you?”
“Dude. I…” You vaguely gesture to yourself. “I’m me. And he’s…him. Choi Soobin the Great, the prince, the God, the emcee of the year.”
“Uh, I’m sorry, what’s that supposed to mean? You’re you – the princess, the goddess, the prettiest girl on campus and the best student in our year.” She tosses a pretzel at you, scowling. “You’re amazing, bff. Choi Soobin is one lucky motherfucker to have the privilege to spend so much time with you. Of course he’d fall in love! I’d date you if I was into girls!”
The last part of her sentence makes you giggle. “Stop, no one’s talking about love just yet. Do you really think he could be doing all of that with… I don’t know… the intention to woo me?”
“Of course! He’d be a fool not to!” Yeji sits up from her recline on the couch, nearly aggressively grabbing onto your shoulders to shake you. “Didn’t you hear the part where I told you I would date—hell, Ryujin would date you!”
You gape at your best friend, feeling uplifted, reassured and confused all at once. “Wha—? Does Ryujin like girls?”
“No, but she’d still date you. She’s open minded that way.”
“Yeji, what the f—”
“My point is!” She raises a finger up to silence your protest. “You’re fabulous and amazing and gorgeous – have you seen your eyes? Bff, they’re fucking pretty. Do you know what that makes you? More fucking pretty. He likes you, boo, and he's probably got a list of reasons why.”
Yeji’s love language might be words of affirmation through… aggression, but it is surely effective at reminding you of the fact that you’re lovable.
Tumblr media
And so more time goes by, with things staying mostly normal if you don’t count the way your cheeks seem to get extra warmer with every cup of coffee that Soobin hands you, lately. If your locked gazes stay locked for longer than necessary, or if his goodbye hugs linger a little and cause your heart to nearly beat out of your chest – it is no one’s business but your own.
You know, deep in your heart, that you never really got over the guy. He left you heartbroken for a total of 36 hours, while he's spent more than 36 days swirling up a swarm of butterflies in your tummy with every action of his.
It is inevitable for you to fall for him all over again.
You have absolutely no plans of doing anything about it, however, because you have come to really cherish the close friendship you share with Soobin. You like the wheel of routine the two of you constantly spin within and don't wanna change a thing about it.
Although, that is not to say that no change ends up happening.
The wheel of routine makes a detour around a week later, some five weeks after your initiation into the broadcasting club, when you find yourself wrapped in a jacket and still shivering, sitting next to the university’s star athlete on the bleachers in the hockey arena, at six in the morning.
“Is that all? For real?” Choi Yeonjun asks you with his eyes wide in pleasant surprise. “That was quick.”
While you just nod with a chuckle, his girlfriend peers at you from his other side and punches him in the side. “I’ve told you the important questions don’t take that long! Your fangirls just wanna extend the interviews because they wanna ogle you longer.”
“You don’t have to worry about that anymore, I promise,” you tell the girl with a grin, which she returns fully.
“Nah, you don’t even have to tell me because I can see it in your body language,” she mumbles, pressing her cheek into her boyfriend’s shoulder, over which he tips his own head affectionately. “You’re the first ever girl to not view him like a piece of meat. I’m not even kidding.”
“Ah, I’m sorry about that. Your man’s okay, but he’s not my type.”
Yeonjun grins widely at your words, while her girlfriend breaks into laughter because she apparently hasn’t heard anyone use the adjective “okay” for Yeonjun ever before.
Anyone that tries to get between these two must be crazy, you realize, because you’ve sat with them for less than an hour and can already tell how deeply in love they are. And how stinkingly cute they are together.
Well, the general consensus states that Yeonjun is cute, too. Along with being handsome, beautiful, sexy – and a whole plethora of other adjectives that his fans use for him. But it becomes hard for you to agree with the opinion when your heart, instead, chooses to skip a beat for the dimpled cutie seated two steps away from you, smiling at you from behind his camera.
Right as your eyes meet, Soobin waves a hand at you to let you know he has stopped recording. Nodding, you wave goodbye to the couple next to you and leave the spot to walk up to your cameraman.
“If I get hypothermia, you’re footing my hospital bills,” you announce as you settle next to a laughing Soobin, intentionally shifting closer to him to hopefully absorb some of his body heat.
“I told you to bring a jacket, didn’t I?”
“And I did, but it was useless.”
“Because it was denim!” He gives a full belly laugh at that, and the sound is so beautiful to your ears that it becomes hard for you to maintain your scowl of annoyance. “Who brings a denim jacket when asked to carry one?”
“Hey, you texted me at five am!” you whine in complaint. “I could barely open my eyes, my brain wasn’t working!”
“Is that why you didn’t question me?” His tone is a little teasing and so are his raised eyebrows as he smirks at you. “I asked you to come downstairs quickly and you arrived within ten minutes, ready to run away to the mountains with me if I asked. What’s up with that, hm?”
Your cheeks feel on fire at the implication of his words. Clearing your throat, you try to come up with a response, but your heartbeat is too loud in your ears and meeting Soobin’s playful gaze might just make it crash due to the onslaught of overwhelming emotions.
Well. At least you’re feeling a little warmer now.
“You – you said it was a surprise and a huge honor that I’d later thank you for… I got excited,” you mumble, entwining your cold fingers and stuffing your hands beneath your knees to warm them up. “Thanks for thinking of me for this honor but honestly…” You gesture towards Yeonjun with your chin. “I don't really care for athletes. They’re not my type. I prefer brains over brawn. This guy’s taken, anyway, so people should really…”
You trail off when you turn to look at Soobin and find him smiling at you almost knowingly, such unabashed affection in his gaze that your throat closes up with nervousness.
“I… I – I mean—”
“Yeonjun’s not your type?”
Swallowing past your nerves, you very slowly shake your head. “Is that a surprise?”
He shrugs his shoulders, trying to seem nonchalant, but you see the stiffness that enters his spine at the question. “Yeah, kind of. He’s… well, everyone I know either wants him or wants to be him.”
Wants to be him? Oh… Your lips curve up in a small smile as it begins to make sense to you. “Including you?”
His eyes widen in surprise as he looks at you. “He’s the most popular guy at our uni, Y/N. Who wouldn’t wanna be him?”
You should be surprised by his answer but you somehow aren’t. Because this ties up with a number of things you’ve been unable to fully make sense of about Soobin. Most of all, this explains why it would get him so riled up that people would try to use him and his club – one of the most sacred things he holds in his life – just to get close to Yeonjun. It would also explain why he would have felt insecure and jealous about it.
Emotions such as these are hard to navigate. Within the month that you’ve spent working closely with Soobin, you’ve come to know that he cares about his friends a lot – he truly loves them and would go to extreme lengths to help them whenever and wherever. It pains you that he struggles with this burden on the inside.
You need him to know that he shouldn’t. That he doesn’t need to.
Which is why you shuffle closer to him, to the point where your thighs brush together, and look into his wide, bunny eyes to tell him that: “When I first saw you, I was fully convinced you were the most popular guy at the uni. And it stayed with me for months until I began my research into uni related facts and opinions and found out about our hockey team. This is why I could never gather enough courage to approach you, you know? You were this tall, handsome and sweet guy – textbook university crush material. How could you not be the most popular?”
Soobin’s cheeks turn pink, then pinker, then bright red, and by the end of your confession, he’s got a trail of redness climbing up to his ears. His eyes stay glued to yours, even as he bites down on his bottom lip.
When you see the way he exhales shakily, you finally release a giggle at his flustered state. “What? Are you really blushing that hard? How're you so cool as an emcee but your cheeks go red when a girl compliments you, Soobin?”
Soobin huffs out a laugh through his nose and rolls his eyes, pursing his lips to bite back his smile. Then he shakes his head. “Not just any girl.”
This time, you feel a similar blush begin to cover your face. You attempt to joke it away. “I… I’m h–honored, I guess?”
Smirking at your stutters, Soobin simply averts his gaze from yours and goes back to packing up the recording equipment. “Speaking of honors, by the way. This isn't exactly what I was talking about.”
You frown in confusion. “Oh? So what is—wait. Why did you wake me up at five, then?!”
“Woah, easy!” he laughs when you get up and brace your fists on your waist, ready to throw hands. “I brought you here because having your first solo interview with Yeonjun would give you a good boost of publicity for your future with the club.”
“Ow, are we using him for clout?” You scrunch your nose up when Soobin proudly nods.
“Precisely. And also to give you a small rehearsal so that you know what all to focus on when you prepare for the freshman orientation that’s coming up soon.”
You freeze in the middle of a nod.
To prepare you for what?
Your brain refuses to comprehend the words. He couldn’t possibly be talking about the orientation, right?
Eyes wide and jaw dropped, you stare at Soobin while he seamlessly continues to speak.
“You're pretty comfortable with the mic and you actually enjoy interacting with groups. I still remember the clips your friend had shown me. Orientation stage requires the ability to interact well and improvise upon the script efficiently, because you’re tasked with making sure these bunch of seventeen year olds feel welcome into their new surroundings. And you, ma’am, happen to be an ace at both the arts.”
Still in disbelief, you sit next to him again and forward a hand to hold onto his forearm, bringing his focus back on you. “Soobin… are you sure? I’ve – I’ve been here for a month, and—”
“And you were amazing even before you joined us.” He turns to you to take both your palms between his, and says your name. A surge of sparks passes through your nerve endings at the warm contact, but Soobin’s gaze grounds you – it’s so open and honest that it compels you to believe every word he says to you. “You’ve only improved with each day, right? You will be great, I’m absolutely sure.”
Nodding slowly, you begin to smile when he does.
Giving your hands a jerk, Soobin points at the couple seated a few feet away. “Just you wait and see, you’re about to go viral when this bit is released. The one girl that remains unaffected by Choi Yeonjun’s charm? Oh, you’re gonna pull so many admirers within a week. Get ready for fanboys crushing on you and sliding into your DMs. Bet they’ll have a fan page up and running before your next public appearance.”
You break into laughter, craning away from him at his teasing. But Soobin tugs at your hands to pull you back up, this time bringing you closer to him than you were before. The previous traces of playfulness have given way to a small, expectant smile on his face.
"Do I get brownie points for being the first in line?"
What? What? An awkward chuckle leaves you, quickly dwindling when Soobin's smile remains unchanged as he continues to look into your eyes. "What… what are you talking about?"
He tilts his head sweetly, giving your hands a small squeeze as he says your name. "As if I haven't been so obvious… You're the most talented member our group has seen in a while, you know? I can't look away from you when you're working and, like, initially I thought I was being a fan… But then I started to daydream about your bright eyes, gorgeous smiles, your cute giggles, your huge fucking heart that is always so kind to everyone, and…" Soobin pauses with a sigh, cheeks turning red and dimples flashing. "Come on, are you really gonna make me say it?"
Your breath comes in stuttered gasps as you try to gather your thoughts. "Soo–Soobin, I… I… Do you really…?"
"Really like you and really want to go out with you? Yeah, I do.” He smiles at you, bringing your faces close enough to boop your nose with his own. "Is there a problem?"
"You… like me?" You feel terribly confused, somewhat lost, and just a bit scared. If Soobin doesn't mean it with one hundred percent sincerity, you'll never recover from this hurt. So you just try to deflect: "But you barely know me?"
He pulls away with a small scoff of disbelief, eyes widening in surprise. "So it's believable for you to have a crush on me when you'd never even held a conversation with me, but you can't accept that I like you because you're the most beautiful, most intelligent and the most caring person I've ever met in my life?"
Your breath hitches on an exhale – and you're unable to breathe in again for long moments after that.
He thinks you're beautiful, intelligent and caring.
He likes you.
He actually likes you.
Yeji's words of aggressive affirmative circle in your head: He likes you, boo, and he's probably got a list of reasons why.
She was… actually right? Holy shit…
You're so freaking emotional right now, you might cry.
A cross between a chuckle and a sniffle escapes you despite your attempts of stifling it, catching Soobin by surprise. His hands immediately let go of yours to cup your cheeks in concern.
"Hey, hey, what happened? Please don't think too hard about—"
"Soobin," you cut him off with a whisper. "I like you, too. So, so much."
A slow smile begins to curl his lips up, beautifully. "You do?"
"I have for so long. I… don't think I ever stopped."
"Even with the way I hurt you so bad?" His face becomes somber for a moment.
"Yes, even then. You've shown me who you really are, Soobin, and that person is amazing. You've proven to me that I caught you in a moment of weakness, and… I think I understand it now more than ever." You smile when his lashes flutter, eyes gazing at you as if in wonder. "Besides, I think I forgave you when you first got me my correct coffee order with that cute smile of yours."
He blushes again. "Ah, so my smile is cute?"
"The cutest." You solemnly nod, cheeks still held in his palms. "Your whole face is."
"Well then, I hope you're okay with my cute face doing this?"
You know what is coming as you watch him erase the space between your mouth and his, and yet you're not nearly prepared for the way your blood turns electric the moment his plush, heart-shaped lips make contact with yours. Pure fire surges through you, body strung tight one moment and then fallen pliant in his hold the next.
Soobin's thumbs brush against the heated flesh of your cheeks, as if attempting to comfort your loud heartbeat – but it's to no avail. Your heart works faster and faster with every push of his mouth against yours, so full of giddiness that it eventually seems to levitaties up and above your body, leaving you weightless and breathless.
You try to kiss him back to the best of your abilities, but you feel like you've been entranced – held in a dreamlike state that has rendered you completely immobile and turned your brain to goo.
Soobin seems to recognise your condition, somehow, pulling away from the kiss with a chuckle brushed against your slightly parted lips. Lidded eyes look into yours with a smile held in them, his chocolate irises turned to thin rings due to how dilated his pupils are.
"You good?"
His voice comes out all hoarse and breathless, making your stomach clench with desire and you're instantly spurred into motion.
Reaching out with both your hands, you grip onto the back of Soobin's neck and the side of his jaw, and this time pull him in for a proper kiss with equal participation. His breath hitches for a moment, but is released in the form of a small grunt when you open your mouth against his – and that is all you need to absolutely lose yourself into the taste and feel of Choi Soobin.
You would've probably stayed lost for quite a bit too, had a loud whistle not echoed around the arena, making both you and Soobin jump apart with startled gasps. Wide eyed, you look at each other, and then two stairs above you.
Yeonjun's girlfriend is grinning at you with her entire teeth on display, while the guy himself has his arm extended towards the two of you, thumb pointed downwards.
"Her first interview isn't even out yet, dude!" he calls out, booing Soobin with his entire arm. "Literally obliterating her popularity before she could even gather bitches, you're so lame and insecure, Soob, boo hoooo!"
Soobin tosses a random plastic case towards the guy, whining into your ear as he rests his chin on your shoulder grumpily. You giggle at his pout, entwining your hands together to bring them up and press a soft kiss to the back of his.
"Are we going on that date before or after the interview is aired, then?" you tease the guy, wiggling your eyebrows.
Soobin glares at you through playfully narrowed eyes beneath lowered eyebrows, until you're giggling again and he's kissing your smile. "Definitely before."

Miracle-fifteen
Tumblr media
Pairings: Noah Sebastian x Reader
Warnings/Tropes: forced proximity, slight enemies to lovers, slow burn, smut, angst, fluff, mentions of death, and swearing.
Summary: Reader is the merch girl for Bad Omens. It wasn't what she wanted to do with her life but when her mother got sick with Alzheimer's, reader took a job where she could to help with the costs. She thought it would be a one-time gig but the longer she was on the road with them, the harder she fell for Noah Sebastian; even if he wanted nothing to do with her. She needed a miracle to save her mom and her future.
Author Note: Since this one is in Noah's POV, it's kind of short because I didn't want to give too much away for what's going to happen next in the Readers POV. With it being so short, I'll make it up to you guys with an extra long one for chapter sixteen!

NOAH
"You're a fucking idiot," Folio seethed, eyes slicing me in half.
My gaze was glued to the door, not wavering even with the various sets of eyes burning into me. None of them mattered. The only one that did slapped me in the face and walked through the door moments ago. I said some nasty, hurtful, things to Y/N, but the words slipped out of my mouth before I even thought of the repercussions. I was so hurt with how she'd been avoiding me the last few days and when she was around me, all I could think about was how she broke up with me because she'd rather deal with things alone. I wanted to be with her to help her with her mom but she continued to push me away before falling into Folio's arms.
I knew there was nothing to be jealous or upset over with their friendship but the part of me that couldn't get over parts of my past kept screaming at me they were hooking up. Then when I saw her post more pictures on her Only Fans page earlier, all I saw was red. When we were together, she never posted, so I'd assume she was doing it out of respect for us, which I never would have told her too since it would be her choice. But only a few days of being single, she was back to post pictures of herself; not the typical half covered.
My angel was naked in all of her gorgeous glory for everyone on that fucking website to see and do gods know what else.
Like you're one to judge. Remember that time in the small tour bus bathroom? She was on the other side of the door in her bunk while you came all over your hand.
Shaking the thoughts from my mind with a scowl, I turned to look at Folio.
"Screw you," I gritted out. "I don't need a lecture from you."
Folio stared at me with wide eyes before scoffing. "I'm not trying to start shit with you, Noah."
Bryan and Nick muttered something to Davis and Matt then soon, the four of them left to most likely find where Y/N went. They left me alone with Folio and Jolly, who stayed as a buffer in case things got heated.
"What the hell is the matter with you?!" Folio demanded.
Throwing off my jacket, I ran a hand through my hair. "It's none of your business."
"Bullshit," Folio spat. "It's everyone's business because you brought us into it. You didn't have to bring up those things, but you did because you felt upset about something so small as a friendship. Maybe if you weren't such an asshole to her, maybe she would have came to you with these things about her mom."
"She's dealing with that on top of finding out that her whole life is basically a lie," he continued.
"She pushed me away," I reminded Folio.
Who in turned rolled his eyes. "That didn't mean you had to walk away. She needs you, Noah. For once in your life, stick to something good. That's what she is for you; good. Stop letting your past dictate your future with her because you're afraid."
With one final look, Folio slipped past the door, leaving me alone with Jolly.
He gave me a stern gaze. "You crossed a line, Noah. I know it bothers you that Y/N went to Folio with these things about her past and her mom but that doesn't make it right. Just because you're dealing with shit from Rachel-."
"Don't say her fucking name," I gritted out through clenched teeth.
Jolly hesitated for a moment. "She fucked you up, we all know that. But pretending that you're not still dealing with it is bullshit."
"I'm not," I defended. "It happened years ago and I haven't thought of her since the night I left."
"Rachel cheated on you. Throughout your entire two-year relationship. That's why you left."
With a long breath, I fell onto the couch in the green room. "I don't need to be reminded, Jolly."
"YN isn't Rachel. She wouldn't hurt you like that," he said while sitting next to me.
I knew that. I also knew it was wrong of me to compare what Rachel did to me in the past to Y/N now. Rachel cheated on me any chance she could find. I invited her with me on Bad Omens' first tour but she declined so she could stay back at our place to invited guy after guy over. The only reason I found out was because I came back early from tour one night and caught a guy mid thrust into her.
After that, I packed up all of my shit to move in with Jolly. I couldn't stay in the place we shared knowing what she did there. I told the rest of the guys what Rachel did but none of them really know how bad it fucked me up.
Only Jolly did.
The trust issues. The constant worry if I'm enough for whoever I'm with. The fear of walking into the same thing; with Y/N and Folio.
Even dealing with all of that, it gave me no right to say those things to Y/N. She didn't deserve it, especially with what she'd been going through the last few days.
"I think the two of you need to sit down and actually have a discussion about what's going on. Although it doesn't excuse what you said, you need to tell her how you're dealing with some things in your past relationship and projecting it onto her," Jolly said.
I rested my head in my hands, suddenly the realization of everything I said to Y/N replaying in my mind.
"I said some fucked up shit, Jolly. I put her personal business out in front of all of you and compared it to basic porn."
"Wait," Jolly shifted in his seat. "It's true? About the Only Fans?"
I nodded. "I don't know why she's doing it."
"What's going on with her mom?"
As I opened my mouth to speak, the door to the green room bursted open and in walked Folio, whose eyes blazed with fury.
"You need to call her; now," he demanded.
"She won't talk to me," I shot back while rasing to my feet.
Our set was about to start and the last thing I needed right now was to be getting lectured by Folio.
"Do you know why Y/N had to leave?" Folio asked.
When I shook my head, exasperated, he continued. "Her mom, who has Alzheimer's, drove and crashed her car into a tree. She's in the hospital right now."
My heart sank to the pit of my stomach, the guilt eating away at my insides.
"Where's Y/N?" I asked, suddenly not giving a shit about our show tonight.
Folio shook his head. "She's gone, Noah. She packed up her shit and found a flight back home. But don't act like you give a shit about her. You threatened to fire her because she needed to leave. Why? Because you're upset that she's talking to her friends? That's all we are to her, friends. She's fucking crazy about you, dumbass. The two of you being together was the best thing to happen to her in a long time."
"I fucked up, Folio," I muttered.
"Understatement," he deadpanned. But then let out a long breath, the anger easing away from his shoulders. "I never intended to come between you two, Noah."
"I know," I nodded. "It's my own fucked up mind that's pushing her away and creating tension between you and me."
Folio raised a brow. "Is it because of Rachel?"
When Jolly noticed the way my jaw ticked and fist clenched, he answered for me with a nod. "I already gave this speech."
My heart hammered in my chest, the fear of finally losing Y/N creeping in. "I really fucked up."
"Where exactly is Y/N now?" Jolly asked when he heard the sadness in my voice.
"Davis is driving her to the airport. It wasn't cheap, but she was able to find a last-minute flight home," Folio said.
Silence fell between us for a long moment, the three of us staring at each other wondering where to go from here.
"We can't cancel the show," Jolly finally said.
Folio agreed. "There's only three shows left. Y/N said she would have our balls if we canceled the rest of the tour because of this. Once were done, we can check in on her."
I remained quiet, my mind running through a handful of different thoughts. Mostly ones of the ways I would go about making this up to Y/N. There was a chance she wouldn't forgive me and never want to see me again.
Could I live with that?
Hell no.
Would I bend over backwards and prove to her how much she means to me?
I thought then back to that night of the first party she attended at my place. It was right before we were heading out on tour, her first tour with us. I couldn't keep my mind off of her that entire night as she talked with Davis, who she knew from highschool, and then Folio. He was always easy going which would explain why she retreated to him.
When it came to the group shot, I purposely made it to be that she was next to me. Before, I watched her from afar but in that moment, having her that close to me made my heart warm with adoration. She was breathtakingly beautiful and her voice sounded like a sweet symphony. I wanted to bathe in the warm glow that radiated off of her, before I dulled it with my own issues.
When she smiled? Fuck, it lit up the entire space.
I remember being so nervous for the picture but when she eased into my touch around her lower back; I found myself staring at her instead of the camera. In that moment, I knew how fucked I was for her. She had me wrapped around her little finger and I would have given her everything she ever wanted.
Until you fucked it up.
Running a hand over my face, I let out a long sigh before looking at Folio. "I'm sorry for being an asshole to you."
He gave me a curt nod. "I'm not the one that needs an apology, Noah."
"I know," I nodded while looking at the tattoo on my thumb of the angel wings.
Would I bend over backward to prove to her how much she means to me?
Without fucking question.

Heat Waves
Killer x gn!reader (afab edition) word count: 2.3k amab version a/n: so technically this ties in with the latest chapter of this fic - call it chapter 3.5 if you will, but it also works as its own stand alone thing sooooo here ya go. also, side note: i use the term palette which someone brought to my attention that not everyone uses in this specific context (could just be something my bio mom called it idk). in this case a palette refers to spreading out blankets, usually three or four, one on top of another - typically on a floor - making a makeshift bed. also you put a bunch of pillows on it. im not sure if there's another term for something like that - i only know it to be a palette lmao
Suddenly, you were very glad Killer thought ahead. Not only did he bring the comforters and pillows to really spruce up the bed of the truck and make it more comfortable - he also actually remembered to set it up before the two of you got to business.
There'd been a few times where the two of you were hanging out in the truck bed and ended up getting frisky. You usually ended up with major back pain or all kinds of bruises and scratches from lack of buffer between you and the metal bed.
This time he had it all planned out and you were glad for it. You weren't going to have to think ahead or plan out exactly how to shag him while doing the least amount of damage. You didn’t have to think at all, actually.
Also, you knew that since you had riled him up earlier and then blue balled him, he was really gonna let you have it. Between that and the fact he was leaving for who knows how long - you knew you were definitely going to be feeling it the next few days.
Good.
You felt him place a hand on your back as he kissed you feverishly, his other hand on your thigh before he moved to lay you down in the comfort of the blankets. He didn't once break the kiss as he moved you to where he had wanted you, groping the meat of your thigh, making you whine softly.
He began to kiss your jaw and down your neck, leaving plenty of hickies in his wake. He wanted to mark you up before he left, reminders that he would be back soon enough. You gasped as you felt him bite down on your shoulder, your eyes rolling back slightly. Yeah, he definitely was in one of his more feral moods. Hell, you might not even be able to walk tomorrow.
Your body already felt like it was on fire at this point, more than excited to have Killer do whatever he wanted for however long he wanted. You’d go all night if he wanted.
Your hands found their way into his hair before tugging on it roughly, causing him to groan loudly against you. His hands made their way up your shirt, groping your chest before pulling it off of you completely. You were glad it was a summer night or you'd be shivering. Though, you did anyway from the sudden kiss of the cooler night air.
Killer covered you with kisses, his lips feather light as he ran them down your torso, nipping you here and there, leaving a few hickies. Your entire body was buzzing as you pressed into him. Each point of contact riling you up more and more, ready for him to get on with it already. You loved the light signs of affection, but it’d been a while. You were ready for him to completely use you.
It took him absolutely no time at all to take off your pants and underwear, tossing them somewhere to the side. You didn't even fully comprehend where they ended up but you hoped they didn't end up on the ground. Not the end of the world but inconvenient.
With a sharp inhale of breath, Killer spread your legs, leaning back for a moment.
“What?” you mumbled, face red as you looked up at him. You never really felt embarrassed or ashamed with him. You knew he loved every inch of you - inside and out.
“Mm, just enjoying my view.” He licked his lips and your heart raced. You loved it when he looked at you like he was some kind of wild animal watching his prey.
You opened your mouth to say something smart when you felt his mouth against you. He wasted no time in dragging his tongue along your folds. The fork in his tongue gave a whole different sensation especially as he flicked at your clit, placing it in between his split as he did so.
Ever since he split his tongue, it definitely heightened the experience for both of you. He got it from losing a bet, but it ended up working in his favor - both of your favors.
The sudden stimulation surprised you, your eyes rolling back as a moan ripped from your chest. It was loud enough that it echoed slightly and some nightlife skittered about. You didn't realize you'd been that loud. Man, you were glad you were in the middle of nowhere.
A small chuckle came from the man in between your legs and your face was ablaze. “W-What are you laughing at?” you mumbled, your breathing growing heavier the more filled with lust you became.
He pulled away from his assault on you for a moment to look up at you through his hair. You felt his fingers start to stroke you, your hips twitching slightly in response and a whine escaping your lips.
“Nothing in particular, you're just cute,” he crooned. You opened your mouth to retort only to, once again, be interrupted by your own lust as he slid in one of his thick fingers. You choked on your words, immediately closing and trying to muffle the moan that threatened to erupt from you. You couldn’t think clearly, already drunk on lust.
You watched as the smug smile on his face grew. You went to roll your eyes at him only for them to roll back into your skull instead as he began to work in a second finger. Fuck, he wasn't going to let you breathe, was he?
Not that you were complaining.
He worked on stretching you as you rolled your hips, trying to get more friction with noises that were a mix of pleasure and frustration. You just wanted him to get to the part where he destroyed you. It's been a while so you were yearning for it. He was taking it slow on purpose. The both of you knew you could handle him with ease. Hadn’t he already made you wait enough for things?!
You could feel yourself on the cusp of a climax, your breathing growing more shallow, your body growing warmer. “Fuuuck-” Then he pulled his hand from you, leaving you empty and cold. Your body shivered from the sudden lack of warmth as you looked up at him in disbelief. You let out a huff of irritation, glaring at him the best you could.
“Just a little payback for earlier, but I'm too greedy to completely stick to the bit.” And boy howdy, were you glad for that.
You were panting, vision hazy as you looked at him. It was a full moon tonight, so he was illuminated pretty well despite being where there wasn't any light from lamps and such. Fuck, he was beautiful.
“I only did that to get back at you for-” Before you could finish your sentence, he was back at attacking you with his mouth once more. His tongue plunged deep inside of you as his fingers started to rub your clit in full assault mode.
Your eyes widened and you cried out, thighs tightening around his head a bit as your body reached its sudden climax, making a mess of your boyfriend. He cleaned you up with his tongue, your hips and thighs twitching as you rode through your high.
You were panting heavily, closing your eyes as you tried to calm yourself down. Killer pulled up, a satisfied yet hungry look on his face. Your heart raced, body growing warm all over again. He could rile you up so easily but you already knew that you do the same to him.
He yanked his own shirt off, tossing it to the side and you admired the view. Your hands moved up, tracing over his chest before wrapping your arms around his neck. He kissed you hungrily, a small growl escaping from him. A shiver ran down your spine in anticipation, fuck. He was so hot when he was like this.
You suddenly felt his fat head press against you. You hadn't even noticed him pull himself out or even roll on the condom. He must've done it while you were collecting yourself.
“I love you,” he mumbled against you. Before you could return the sentiment, you felt him begin to press inside you. Your eyes widened slightly, at this point they were going to get dry with how open you were having them, and rolled back. As he pushed his way into you, your back arched, legs spreading further to make it easier for him.
He didn't slam into you, but he didnt go slow either. Your walls were stretched around him, throbbing slightly from the sensation as he bottomed out. You felt absolutely full, your body tingling and floaty. “I love you,” you finally managed to mumble back.
He just smiled, placing a kiss on your lips once more before getting down to business.
Get down to business he did. He didn't fully hold back, thrusting in and out of you quickly from the jump. You were already still sensitive from your first orgasm of the night and with the rough way he'd been handling you, his fingers digging into your hips paired with more bitemarks and hickies across your skin, you were about ready to snap again.
Your nails dug into his back, dragging them down. You weren’t going to be the only one marked up, that you were going to make sure of. As he pumped in and out of you, you started kissing and biting at his skin this time, wanting to leave him with memories of you.
You felt yourself tightening up, this round was about to close for you. The sound of skin against skin, the breathing and moaning of you both, it almost echoed in the forest around you.
“Killi, I-” You gasped, clenching around him as you threw your head back and cried out his name as you reached euphoria for the second time tonight. It wasn't long after that you felt his hips still as he reached his climax as well.
The both of you were panting as you rode out your high, both twitching and trying to recover.
You felt him move your leg up over his shoulder and you looked at him with half lidded eyes. You slurred something incoherent, trying to ask ‘again’ but garbled nonsense coming out instead. You're not even sure if any of it registered to Killer anyway with the feral way his eyes looked. Both of you were completely out of it.
Either way, you weren’t gonna complain. You kind of liked it when he was like this. Sure, you were sore for a few days but shit, it was worth it.
You felt him raise your other leg over his shoulder. Oh, he was really gonna hit deep with this one.
You hardly had time to prepare yourself before he pulled out for a moment. You had a feeling he was switching out the condom. Then, not moments later, he was slamming back into you. A loud cry ripped from your throat and you saw stars for a moment as the world spun around you. It didn't really hurt perse, but you were also too far lost in bliss to even really notice. It would definitely hurt tomorrow.
He pistoned his hips, fucking you hard and rough. Your legs were starting to tingle and go numb. Your nails were now digging into his biceps, dragging down before your hands dropped to your sides as you just didn't have the energy.
You were suddenly very glad he remembered to put the blankets down or you would be suffering right now with how roughly he was pummeling you into the blankets and pillows. It provided a surprising amount of comfort. He must've brought the good blankets - which meant he had planned on absolutely ravaging you from the start.
Your eyes were glued to the back of your head at this point, body limp, and you were pretty sure you were drooling but you were too out of it to really gather your surroundings or yourself for that matter. Nothing more than his cocksleeve.
This round didn’t last as long as Killer's hips stilled once more as he reached his peak, you'd done the same right along with him, your two bodies in such sync with each other.
Killer let your legs down and you whined slightly as you felt him move inside of you because of it. Fuck, everything was so sensitive right now. He moved, keeping himself inside of you for now as he laid on the blankets, pulling you onto his chest. You were trying hard to to be riled up as he moved around.
You just laid against him, eyes closed as you tried to stop the world from spinning. You felt like you were floating on clouds, your body still buzzing - heart pounding in your ears so loudly.
Slowly, the feeling was beginning to come back to your limbs and you were able to move. You slowly lifted yourself from Killer’s chest, looking at him with a lazy smile, still unable to fully open your eyes.
“How you holdin’ up there?” he asked you, his voice gruff. You only hummed in response, not too sure if you could form any words let alone a sentence. You kissed him softly, before resting your foreheads together.
A grin slowly spread across his face. “Good.” He pressed a kiss to your forehead. “Cause I plan on using you all night.”
Your eyes widened at him, your heart racing again with excitement again. That’s all it took for your body to get hot all over again. Damn, you really loved this man.
“Fine by me,” you said, voice raw and hoarse, kissing him hard once more. You knew your voice was only going to get worse or disappear completely. It was going to be a long night.

Suffice to say, you weren’t currently on speaking terms with Joel. You’d seen him a few times around town but made a concentrated effort to not even look his way if you could help it. His gaze followed you. You could feel it lingering on you with each step you took.  A few times you couldn’t resist sparing a glance - curious to a fault - just to see his demeanor.
It was the same each time. Perking up a bit when he noticed you returning some kind of attention. Desperate, almost. Hesitant. Even at times demure. That was a new one. Who would’ve ever thought pigheaded Joel Miller had it in him to be contrite and appear unsure of himself.
If he and Ellie were out and about together, you’d kept things civil, of course, but there was an undeniable shift in the dynamic. You half expected Ellie to comment on it, but she was uncharacteristically reserved about it. It was almost as if she could sense whatever had changed was out of her domain to amend. So, she settled for expectant, probing glances between you and Joel as you conversed in this new strange, cold manner. Joel, uncharacteristically the warmer of the two of you.
It was no wonder why Ellie had confused, troubled expressions every time she bore witness to these standoffish exchanges, but that didn’t make it any easier to stomach.
At one point, after it was very clear you’d made the decision with Joel to draw a hard line in the sand, he tried reaching out with the safety of Ellie’s presence to buffer your disdain. Reaching out, literally. Ellie had seen a friend across the way and ran off to say hi, throwing a quick “I’ll be right back!” to you and Joel. It sounded like a promise and a prompt all in one, as if to say she would be gone long enough for a moment of privacy but not long enough that you two could possibly make things any worse than they were.
You stiffened at the reality of being alone with Joel, even if there were plenty of people milling about the street all around you. You hadn’t been alone since he’d come to your house and shown you the vile underbelly of his insecurities and projections. You were scared to be alone with him. Scared you might do something stupid, like forgive him. His eyes and face had conveyed nothing but regret and remorse. It wasn’t enough, but it was more than you expected.
“Listen, I-”
He wasted no time for this rare opportunity to speak with you privately. You wasted no time shutting him down.
“I think I’ve done plenty of listening to what sort of things you have to say to me, Joel,” you snip. You barely recognize the acidic, distant tone you’ve adopted.
Joel closes his eyes and sighs, like he anticipated that sort of response. When he opens them again, your worst fears begin to take hold. His big brown eyes are searching you for any way back in. He’s sorry. You know he’s sorry. You can see it. It’s not enough.
And yet, your chest gets warm and tight under his gaze. He’s looking at you like you are the singular point of existence in the entire universe, as though he needn’t concern himself with seeking anything else because you are the sole source of entity and breath and life.
“I know I fucked u–” Again, taking what little chance he had been given by Ellie to try to plead his case with you.
“I’m not interested, Joel,” you lie. He can tell you’re lying, too. You know because the little flash of hope across his features makes you angry with yourself for giving in to him so easily.
“I shouldn’t have–” Stubborn. Stubborn stubborn stubborn. And penitent.
“In case I haven’t made myself abundantly clear, Joel, I’m not interested. I don’t know if you’re just used to people letting you treat them like garbage or what, but I’ve been through way too much in my life to let someone abuse my trust like that,” you snap.
“You’re right. I jus’– I got in my own fuckin’ head, and–”
“Enough. You’re wasting both of our time. I suggest you focus on giving Ellie the life she deserves and stop trying to breathe life back into whatever–” you motion between the two of you broadly with a look of contemplative perplexion, “–whatever this is.” You falter a beat before correcting yourself. “Was.”
When Joel reached out in desperation to circle your wrist in his hand, silently begging for you to not send him off this way, your resolve started to waver. You needed to end this before you did something stupid, like feel bad for him.
His hand is fixed and inviting and devastating. You want him to hold all of you. You want to feel all of him against you. To just let this go. To just let yourself get wrapped up in him. His thumb runs supplicant circles against your hand.
When you don’t immediately tear away from him, he throws everything into his petition. His other hand cups your elbow on the opposite arm, a faint pull urging you towards him. Towards his warm body. Towards the broad, protective span of him, where you could easily find yourself melting into him. This is the side of Joel you wish existed more often. You might be able to bear it if he was this version of himself for you instead of the grisly, belligerent variant you’d found yourself on the receiving end of more times than you’d care to admit you’d previously tolerated.
“Just tell me what I hafta do to fix it, please,” he implores quietly. You sneer at his appeal to “fix it.”
“Why am I not surprised that you have the nerve to destroy something and then ask for it to tell you how to put it back together again?” you snort humorlessly.
You want to kick yourself for the wording. Of course you had to make it sound like you were the thing he had destroyed, not the relationship or the friendship or whatever it was that you’d had. Joel’s face twists in a way that you know he’s caught your slip. You decide you’ve been through this enough times. You can’t believe you’re standing here, yet again, putting yourself in a position to be stripped down and chastened by Joel without him even trying.
That was only part of the problem. He humbled and disoriented you unintentionally, and then he’d turn around and purposefully upbraid you whenever he had the whim. You didn’t deserve either.
You hated how every cell in your body seemed to fight you as you jerked yourself away from his grasp. Your skin burned where he’d just touched you. It screamed at you to bring it back, bring him back, bring that feeling back. But you couldn’t. Bringing that feeling, that touch - bringing him back - came with the rest of it. It wasn’t a fair trade, and you owed it to yourself to demand better.
You straighten with resolve and narrow your eyes at Joel. The line of his mouth is tight as he works to conceal the crestfallen expression that’s fighting its way to his features.
“It’s not like that. I jus’ don’t know how to-to do this stuff. I’m fuckin’ awful at it,” he gulps. “I know that’s no excuse, but I jus’ need you to please tell me what I can do to make you–”
“Unlike you, Joel, I recognize that both of us have been through absolute hell. Made it through things you can’t even feel relieved or happy to have survived it at all.” You draw a shaky breath and plough through the rest of your thoughts.
“I just believed you would have seen enough and been through enough to know that the world we live in - the one that’s festered in its own violence for twenty years - is a world where second chances rarely happen,” you hiss.
You pray Joel didn’t catch the wavering in your voice. You did not need to start fixating on Caroline again right now, the biggest supporting claim that second chances were far and few in between in this cruel and unforgiving world.
You were just merely the mirror image of it, the reflection of the cruel and unforgiving world. You, fierce and uncompassionate to Joel in this moment. Nothing more than a byproduct of this world, letting yourself slip into that heartless, ruthless cavern that had ensnared so many others before you. Like Joel.
He shakes his head, a bit frantic, and reaches out towards you again with a step in your direction. “I’ll do anything,” he clips out with urgency. He means it. Really means it. It’s not enough.
“Then do us both a favor and drop it,” you breathe. You don’t trust yourself to speak at full volume as your eyes start to pinch. “And just worry about taking care of Ellie.”
Without another word, you turn on your heel and leave Joel to absorb the ramifications of his actions. You make it to your house and shut the door behind you before dissolving into tears.
Tumblr media
You weren’t going to let Joel drive a wedge between you and Ellie. You’d backed off somewhat from her schooling out of the respect you still somehow held for Joel, but you weren’t going to leave her hanging high and dry just because he wanted to be an insufferable jerk. You make your way to the barnyard where she was assigned today to catch up.
You haven’t told her that you and Joel had a falling out, but she’s probably figured as much. She had already asked you a few times today if everything was okay. You lied for her benefit. She doesn’t need any more reminders that Joel is an asshole. You had no intention of covering for him, but Ellie had enough on her plate without adding more to it. You had spent the better half of an hour listening to her talk about whatever she wanted to talk about. It was your favorite thing when she just went off on tangents and you got to see all the little quirks and unique traits her brain had brewing up there. Seeing the layers peeled back and Ellie being able to just be Ellie would bring a lump to your throat if you thought about it long enough. She was now demonstrating her best chicken noises. The chicken she is holding lets out the real thing when she gives it an encouraging wobble. Ellie bursts into laughter, clearly pleased with her rendition of the crowing in comparison.
“Can’t even tell a difference,” you quip. “And you sound similar, too.” You bite back a grin as your taunt sinks in.
Ellie is confused for a moment before she catches the dig. “Hey! My hair might look as crazy as hers, but you aren’t one to talk,” she jokes back. “You got me there,” you concede with a laugh. You absentmindedly push your strands from your face and realize you’ve been here for a while now. It’s likely time for Ellie to wrap things up for the day. “Well, look, I’m gonna head out. I know your shift is done soon.” Joel is going to meet her at the end of her shift and walk her home as he usually does, and you don’t want to be here when he arrives. “Aw, man. Just stay and walk back with us,” Ellie suggests with such earnestness it makes your heart clench. “I wish I could, but I really do have to meet up with some of the patrol group schedulers and hash some stuff out,” you lie again. “Okay, well then just stay long enough to help me round up all the chickens,” she bargains. You wish you could tell her you want nothing more than to spend as much time with her as she’s willing to let you. Her and Joel, both. But you can’t. You can only hope she doesn’t start to think your reticence has anything to do with her.
You agree to get the flock herded back into their coops before you leave. It wasn’t the most fun task, but watching Ellie dart wildly trying to catch some stragglers made it well worthwhile.
“Okay, I got 7 in. You got the rest?” you call out from one end of the barn where the coops lined its length. “No. One’s still missing,” she replies from the other end. You regroup at the front of the barn and examine the fenced in lot for the missing bird.
“Oh, whoops,” Ellie says, noticing she had left the barn door slightly ajar. You are about to remind her she has got to do better about leaving doors unlocked and open when she pauses at the handle. “Great. I think it ran in here,” she groans, slipping into the barn.
“Ellie,” you caution.
You haven’t been in the barn since, well, basically since you first got to Jackson and were touring the settlement. You didn’t frequent the farming areas, and you never felt the need to expose yourself to unnecessary triggers. You were willing to withstand some of that hardship if it meant showing Ellie you were here for her and wanted to support her.
“Ellie?” you call out louder when she doesn’t respond.
You curse under your breath and step inside the barn. Beams of light are streaming in through the windows and some of the larger cracks in the walls. Tractors awaiting repair, random bales of hay, and lazily discarded tools litter the floor. It looks to be more of a storage space than anything else. A sickly feeling tingles through your body just from passing the threshold. “Ellie?” you call out again even louder as your voice begins to shake.
“Motherfucker snuck in here!” you hear her answer from somewhere above you.
“ELLIE?” you scream as panic and dread start to crush through you.
“I’m up here! Chill!” she calls down.
Ever eager to show how capable and resourceful she was, Ellie had quickly ascended the loft after the errant chicken. Your breathing picked up with your heart as you scanned the room, trying to find where she had gained access. You see the decaying wooden board with small wooden notches nailed along its length leaning against the open wood trap door leading up to the loft.
“ELLIE! STOP! ELLIE, WAIT. PLEASE. DON’T RUN UP THERE,” you scream in a hysteric pitch. You sprint to the ramp as fast as your legs can carry you.
You can hear her footsteps rushing around above your head in pursuit of the chicken. The scratch of its feet and protest of its caws flitter around the loft as you clamber upwards. The board is shaky underneath you, and you aren’t sure it will hold your weight if you put too much force in one place.
You can’t feel your hands anymore. Your footing slips several times as you scurry up the makeshift ladder. Your breaths come erratically, if at all. Your chest is squeezing in on itself. You can feel yourself yelling something out, but you can’t hear exactly what it is past the high whistle noise that fills your ears. You are trying to yell at her to stop - to slow down -  to wait until you could help her down and get the chicken yourself - she could fall - please just stop before something bad happens - please just stop before she gets hurt. Whatever you are saying seems to get the idea across to her as Ellie silently watches you hurtle onto the loft and scramble to collect yourself enough to converge on her. She gingerly holds the chicken in her arms as she looks you over and shoots you a bewildered expression. Your face feels wet for some reason, and your lips are like static as they tingle. You aren’t sure if you’re tasting or smelling the coppery, metallic buzz that's overstimulating your senses. You are still talking, but you’re not sure what you’re saying. You can tell your hold on her arm is too tight by the way she winces. You can’t slacken your grip until you can lead her away from the edge of the loft. You just can’t. Her face is swarming with confusion and now a touch of fear, but she doesn’t push you away or put up any sort of resistance.
You are catapulted into a frenzy when you feel something large and firm grabbing your shoulder from behind.
Screams rip from your chest, but you don’t hear them. You can only feel the way they tear out of you, taking all the air and sanity from you with each one. Without thinking, you shove your hand into your boot to retrieve your knife, flick it open, and swing for the infected’s throat. In the same wild motion you put as much space between Ellie and the assailant as you can.
You don’t register that it is Joel who was currently in front of you and came running when he heard your screams of terror for Ellie from inside the barn.
Your lethal strike is deflected when he catches your wrist and twists your arm behind you. He shakes the knife from your grip and kicks it away with his foot. Your other hand instinctively shoots up to his hair to grab and rip whatever you could. He hugs you closer with your hand still pinned behind you and kicks your feet out from under you. You are guided to the ground flat on your back as Joel presses into you. You are pinned under his weight, but he lets your arm go.
You grasp his hair with both hands as he flinches in pain. He steadies your eyes on him by gently placing his hands on either side of your face.
It finally registers that you aren’t wrestling an infected. You aren’t in that cold barn. You haven’t encountered a half-dead infected up in the loft. You’re in Jackson. You’re with Ellie. Joel is on top of you. He’s pinning you. Your grip loosens.
“Right here,” Joel says firmly.
Your eyes are shooting around, trying to find Ellie. You need to see that she is okay. You crane your neck around enough to see her slowly walking towards you with a worried look. “Look at me,” Joel orders calmly.
Your eyes dart back to Joel’s.
“Nobody’s in danger. We are all safe. You’re okay. You’re with me. With us. I’ve got you.”
Your eyes are still wild as you try to take in a full breath. You can feel the tears streaming down your temples as you stare up at Joel’s gentle, stern gaze.
“I’ve got you. You’re safe,” he soothes.
You blink rapidly and feel your body give underneath Joel’s. You can’t stop shaking, and your entire mouth feels like sandpaper. “Get her down from here,” you command in a hoarse, shaky whisper. He nods.
“Don’t move,” Joel orders. He doesn’t argue about getting Ellie to safety. You see him in your periphery guiding a very concerned looking Ellie down the ramp, chicken in tow. You don’t move, but it has less to do with following his orders and more to do with how you are frozen in your spot and couldn’t move even if you wanted to. You don’t know how much time has passed when Joel returns. He crouches slowly beside you and pulls you into his lap. With every ounce of effort you have left in your body, you grab his collar and wordlessly demand to know where Ellie is. Joel’s arm holds you flush against him, and his free hand cups your face as he reads your expression.
“She’s okay. She’s putting the chicken in the coop outside and waiting there until we come out,” he answers with cognizance of your primary source of distress. You move your lips, trying to vocalize that you need to see her for yourself. You need to make sure she’s okay.
“Ssshh. Ssssssssshh. We can’t get down from here until you breathe,” Joel murmurs.
You thought you were breathing. The jerk of your chest makes you realize the heaving, pained wheeze you hear is actually you, gasping rapid intakes of air to no avail.
Joel places your forehead against his and he grabs your hands from his collar. He holds them in his own underneath your chin.
“Baby, I need you to breathe, okay?” he says softly.
Your head bobs in what you think is a nod as you try to control your breathing.
“Good. Good job, baby. Just feel me and breathe with me, okay?” he guides.
He clutches you against him somehow even closer and sweeps a hand to the back of your neck, positioning your head on his shoulder. He tucks you under his chin and rolls long strokes up and down your arm and back.
Your trembling starts to abate, and your breaths are punctuated with fewer rapid, sequential draws of air. You are slumped against Joel, who hasn’t stopped talking you through the spell. The rise and fall of your chest eventually mimics his as you lay pressed against him. You sit in silence as you come down from your spiral.
“You can try to stand now if you want to,” he offers quietly next to your ear. You clumsily untangle yourself from him and force yourself onto your feet. Your knees immediately buckle, and Joel is once again holding you.
“Slow, darlin’, slow,” he instructs.
You feel the fear start to creep back up when you can’t even stand on your own two feet. You feel completely helpless and weak. You find Joel’s gaze again. His features are soft as his eyes search over you.
“It’s okay. I’ve got you. I’m right here,” he assures you again.
You nod blankly as he steadies you to your feet. “Hold onto me, okay? Don’t let go. I’ve got you,” he promises as he guides you both down the ramp.
How it isn’t collapsing underneath your combined weight is a mystery to you. Joel slides his arm around you and holds your other to the side as he walks so closely behind you that you can feel the entire front of his body shift with each step. Ellie had grown impatient and worried waiting by the chicken coops. She stood in the barn doorway, waiting anxiously for you to come out. You could see her silhouette as Joel walked you closer, and you lurch towards her. You stumble a few steps as Ellie backs out of the doorway to avoid you crashing into her. Your legs feel like a numb, useless limb after losing its bloodflow for too long.
Joel is behind you quickly again, pulling you up and steadying you. “Can’t be doin’ all that, darlin’,” he chides.
The sunshine outside feels blinding, but the cooler rush of air does wonders for your breathing. You hadn’t realized how stagnant and heavy the air in the barn was. You lock in on Ellie again and stumble to her, grabbing onto her forearms for support and emphatic effect at the admonishing things you are lashing at her.
She winces at your once again too tight hold. You demand she explain how she could be so reckless. You make
her promise that she won’t ever do that again. Ellie nods softly with her brow scrunched. You feel Joel somewhere close behind you.
“Okay. I won’t. I promise,” she vows solemnly.
She pauses for a moment, allowing you to notice how loud your heart is beating in your ears. It’s better than the deafening high whistle from before, but you can feel your body start to come to terms with the aftermath of whatever the hell just happened back there. You feel Joel’s hand slide to your side just above your hip. Rather than rebuff his hold, you welcome the steady anchoring and place your hand over his. You stop swaying, which you hadn’t even realized you were doing. You ease back into Joel, allowing yourself a moment of rest. Ellie says your name quietly, a tone of a question.
“What?” you rasp.
“Who’s Caroline?” she hesitates.
“Wh-What?” you shake out.
You feel Joel’s hand grip your side tighter. “Ellie!” he snips. “Not right now.”
Joel doesn’t know exactly who Caroline is, but he does know right now isn’t the time to explore it. The burning curiosity is too much for Ellie to ignore.
“When I was up there, you started screaming at me. You kept calling me Caroline,” she hurries out as Joel hisses orders at her to stop speaking right this instant.
The chemical explosion rushing inside you came shooting up to the surface at your sister’s name. Before you could stop it, the muscles in your stomach commanded you to your hands and knees as you vomited onto the ground.

Day 25-Story:Legacy
Day 25 Storm
Other Stories
Legacy
January 2008
Dorothy sat, watching the engine warm. It had been 52 years since there had been one of its kind had ran the railways, but tomorrow was the big day. Dorothy just knew Arthur would have loved her. Of course one didn't know for certain whether an engine was a female or not until it awoke, but she had a good feeling she was right. Many of the trust thought the engine would be male, but all the engines agreed with her, and they often seemed to have a sense about such things.
Fifteen years of work, and It would end tomorrow. A new Peppercorn A1 would live and breathe for the first time in nearly seventy years, by all accounts there had nearly been a brawl at the NRM over who got to attend her steaming. Well... Other than Scotsman. The Lner A3 had all but adopted the engine from the moment the first frame was cut.
A flicker of color caught her attention. Her eyes widened, it was impossible! The engine hadn't even built up pressure yet!
Nonetheless another flicker flashed over the smokebox.
Dorothy smiled despite her racing heart, it seemed tomorrow wasn't soon enough for someone.
She stood slowly, "Get another engine here, and quick!" She called. A few of the volunteers looked up startled. She walked up to the engine and laid a hand on the buffer, "Shes waking up."
The volunteers sat there for a second before her words processed. Then they were nearly falling over themselves, scrambling into the sheds to call for another engine.
The flickers slowly grew stronger, minute before minute. A 125 pair rolled into the yard and stopped a short distance away, while a 801 watched curiously from the distant station platform.
A volunteer ran out of the shed to her. "A steam excursion was nearby. They've agreed to divert."
A deep whistle resounded in the distance,  Dorothy smiled, she recognized the sound all too well. The whistle echoed again, much closer this time.
A long passenger train shot into the station, barely stopping at the end of the platform with the sound of screeching brakes. The large engine at its head was uncoupled quickly, the massive 6'8" drivers rolled the engine effortlessly across the yard. The volunteers stared in awe as the deep blue pacific came to a stop just in front of the waking engine. But he paid them no mind, focusing instead on the flickering smokebox in front of him. Buffer to buffer the engines shapes were nearly identical at a glance, showing their shared ancestry.
Finally the flickering stopped as Tornado took her first breath. She resembled the engine before her, but sleeker, with a more rounded nose. Her eyes fluttered open slowly, before they locked onto the large engine before her.
The North Western's number four smile., "Hello young one, I am Gordon. I have been waiting so very long to meet you." A happy tear rolled down the old Pacifics cheek.
"Hello!" The young engine chirped happily, "You're very big!" She sounded in awe.  A cheer rose up around them as she spoke, causing the engine to look around in surprise.
Dorothy chuckled, "As are you young Tornado."
Tornado glanced down, noticing her for the first time. "Hi! Is that what I am? A tornado?"
Dorothy chuckled, "No my dear, Tornado is your name. You are a Peppercorn A1 pacific. A type of steam engine used by the LNER."
"Are you a A1 too?" Tornado asked Gordon curiosly.
"I was built a Gresley A1 my dear, a predecessor to your class." He smiled at her confused expression. "Your class is a later one, based on my own."
"Does that make you my brother?" Tornado asked curiously.
Gordon suddenly found it hard to speak past the lump in his throat, "Nothing would please me more little one."
He glanced down at Dorothy. " This is Mrs. Dorothy Mather, she was your designers wife. She is the leader of the team who built you."
"Hello!" Tornado said again. Dorothy chuckled at the energy of the young engine. She could tell this one would be a handful. As she stood between the first LNER Pacific and the last, she knew she wouldn't have her any other way.

The grand power stribog is a Slovakian 9mm carbine style pistol. Imported by global ordnance out of Sarasota Florida. The stribog sp9a1 gen 2 is normally priced between 700-900 depending on where you get it and what kind of sales are available at the time. The example I have shipped with 3 magazines, 2 straight body magazines and 1 curved magazine. Mine also came with the sb tactical brace that most firearms of this style come with. As a little bonus the Stribogs come with a spare set of the polymer flip up sights and it all ships in a pretty nice hard case.
Tumblr media
Out of the box it is a lot smaller than I had expected. (That’s what she said) It has a solid weight of 5lbs 1oz unloaded on the 8” barrel model. There is now a 5” barrel model available along with models that accept Glock magazines. There are 3 main models of stribog to look for, the original is the sp9a1 which a direct blow back with a reciprocating charging handle. Shortly after that came the sp9a1 gen 2 which is also a direct blowback model but with a non reciprocating charging handle. Which to me is a major plus. Then that leads us to the sp9a3 which is grand powers take on a roller delayed action. I am honestly not super knowledgeable or experienced with the sp9a3 considering I’ve never even seen one in person. All of the models ship with lower receivers that have fixed non changeable grips and take the proprietary stribog magazine. As long as I’m understanding this correctly, the neat thing is that the serialized part is the upper receiver portion. Therefore you could easily change out the lower to one of the many aftermarket options available that better suits you.
First shots- The first time I took the stribog out I was not exactly thrill with how it went. I had two failure to feeds in the first magazine. Then when I removed the magazine to clear the malfunctions the entire magazine shot the remaining rounds out. After two or three more times of picking about 28 rounds out of the snow I realized that the straight body magazines that they ship with these are absolute junk. The curved magazine that they send however is awesome. The curved magazines look better, seem to be made better, and have ran 100% flawlessly.
Tumblr media
So after the initial hiccup the first time shooting it I have really grown to love this firearm. Since owning it I have added a couple small upgrades from HB industries to it including their short stroke buffer kit and their mini comp thread protector. I have since put a couple thousand rounds through it with nothing but good times and good things to say about it.
Grand Power has since released the 5” barrel models and the models that accept Glock magazines. Aftermarket support for the stribog seems to be pretty good with offerings from companies like HB industries, Jtac industries, and Arms republic. There are plenty of parts available online like handguard extensions, lower receivers that take different magazines, triggers, and grips.
Tumblr media
I think the future is bright for the little stribog and I am excited to see what comes next for it. In the future I may try to get ahold of a sp9a3 to check out. In the meantime if you are interested in picking up a stribog for yourself then I would highly recommend it. That being said make sure you pick up a few curved magazines that way you can avoid the entire first situation I had.
Awesome firearm for the price, and I’m sure you’ll love it.
Happy shooting!

Only a little bit into an XXY writing session (I'm talking less than 200 words for sure, I usually do 500-1k words per session) and either I'm too much of a flare for the dramatic or I'm just not confident in my writing at the moment, but Chapter 9 is very much a chill chapter -- think Chapter 1. And I feel like I'm struggling to find ways to get the chapter moving. Especially since my outlines consist of like, 1-2 vague/general sentences unless I really need to go in-depth with something. I keep it vague so it can easily be altered when I actually get to writing the chapters.
I'm so used to writing scenes that have this edge of intensity or unease to them, and any that don't are definitely ones I struggle with more. Which is ironic, considering most of XXY is slice-of-life haha. But I think it's good to challenge myself and get out of the comfort zone every now and again!
Also I've been working between this and another thing I'm writing, which is why I'm not working on it everyday. The other thing took priority while XXY Part 1 had been updating, but now that I ran out of buffer chapters I've been switching between the two stories to keep myself from burning out. I find I work best when I have a couple things to cycle between, but since I gave the other story a lot of attention, its a long ways ahead of where it would've been. It's a shorter story too, so I'll be able to finish it then really focus on XXY as my main story again. What that other story is, you'll find out eventually!
Idk if I ever mentioned this, but I have NO IDEA how many chapters XXY will end up having. I've debated ending it at one main plot point that has a specific event in mind, but I've also considered ending it sooner than the intended weather season and changing the event to a different but similar one (that's all the hints you're getting!). My main thing is I wanna tell the character arcs between XXY's members, highlight some of the main AND my favorite antagonists across the franchise, and just tell a fun story that I can reread from start to finish.
I don't wanna say it'll be 100 chapters 'cause that seems unrealistic, but I might get into the 70-80 chapter range if I had to make an estimate right now. That's a pretty generous assumption IMO...We'll just have to see. I'll update you guys once I figure that out haha.
As you can see, this got WAY longer than I thought it would...Totally not using this post as a distraction from the session. :'D Anyway I'm gonna get back to it!

Part 6. Sticking Together (Maternal Instinct, part A)
<<First | <Previous | Next>
Description below the cut
Ladybug catches up to Catwalker, her yo-yo retracting shut.
Ladybug: This is where the flash of light came from, so where’s the akuma?
A shot of the apartment building where Alya lives, yellow light flashing through the balcony window.
Catwalker: There!  There was a flash in that apartment!
Cut to Maternal Instinct (akumatized!Nathalie Sancouer) menacingly holding a phone as she floats in her flying saucer-themed sentimonster, Mothership.  Alya and Marlena Césaire look up at the akuma as tendrils of yellow, green, and purple light bind the mother and daughter together.
Maternal Instinct: Greetings, Césaires!  I am Maternal Instinct!   Since you're tied up, I hope you don't mind if I show myself around?
Nora Césaire runs towards Maternal Instinct, about to punch her face.  Maternal Instinct brandishes her phone at Nora, sending colorful tendrils of light to envelop her too.
Nora: Get wrecked, akuma!
Alya: Nora, wait!
Maternal Instinct: Join your sister in your mother's arms!
Nora poofs to her mother's side, so now Alya, Marlena, and Nora are all stuck holding each other, all bound by colorful tendrils of light.
Maternal Instinct: Don't even try to get in my way.
Alya, Marlena, and Nora put on faces of determination, the two daughters using their free hands to hold up fists.
Alya: You don't know our family very well.  We'll fight you with one arm tied behind our backs!
As the three Césaires are about to attack Maternal Instinct, Catwalker leaps into the living room from the balcony, using his baton to attack Maternal Instinct from behind to send her careening.
Catwalker: Leave this to the heroes.
Maternal Instinct: Nghh!
Catwalker pins Maternal Instinct with his staff and straddles an upside-down Mothership.
Maternal Instinct: Chat Noir, I was wond—you're not Chat Noir??
Ladybug smugly leans against Mothership as she tosses her yo-yo to tie up the akuma/sentimonster. Catwalker uses his baton to keep the phone out of Maternal Instinct's reach.
Ladybug: Meet Catwalker.   If you could tell Shadowmoth that Chat Noir is far beyond his reach now, I'd appreciate it.
Maternal Instinct moves her other hand into a blind spot on Mothership.
Maternal Instinct: You're getting cocky, Ladybug.
Closeup of Maternal Instinct tapping a purple icon on Mothership. Another closeup where her fingers barely glance the edge of the phone, its image now changed to a picture/caption of Nino Lahiffe.
Maternal Instinct: Mothership, let me see another child safely home.
Ladybug falls and Catwalker jumps as Maternal Instinct/Mothership poofs away.
Ladybug: Aaahhh!
Catwalker lands in the classic superhero three-point landing pose.  Ladybug lands flat on her face with her backside inelegantly up in the air and yo-yo tangled all around her.
Ladybug: She teleported away.  Of course she teleported away.  Of course that's a thing that akumas do now.
Catwalker helps a blushing Ladybug to her feet.
Catwalker: I think I saw the name 'Nino Lahiffe' appear on the phone just as she disappeared.  Maybe she teleported to him?
Closeup of Alya.
Alya: That's my boyfriend.  He got hit at the same time I did, so they're probably with his mom.
Catwalker waits for Ladybug from the balcony.  In the background, Ladybug and the Césaires are still inside the apartment, with Ladybug placing her hands on Alya's shoulders.
Ladybug: Thanks, Alya.  I'm sorry you're going to be stuck to your mom for a little while longer.
Alya: Don't worry about us, Ladybug.  You and... Catwalker can handle the akuma.
Ladybug and Catwalker start traveling to Nino's.
Ladybug: Follow me.  Nino lives this way.
Catwalker: Why do you think the akuma is targeting the Ladyblogger and her boyfriend?
Ladybug: Not all akumas target specific people.  She's probably going after anyone she happens to come across.
Catwalker: I'm not so sure.  She seems to be looking for something.
View of Catwalker and Ladybug from below as they travel across the sky.
Catwalker: The akuma could be teleporting kids to their mothers as a quick way to follow them into their homes.
Ladybug: That still doesn't give the akuma a reason to target them specifically.  Except... Shadowmoth does know that they both have a history with using miraculous.
Catwalker: I can’t rule that out, but... my gut says that’s not it.   I think it has something to do with someone that Alya and Nino both know personally.
Ladybug: I guess we'll have to catch up to the akuma to find out who's right.

hiii could you do one of tom asking your dad to marry you?? thankuuuuu
okay so I don't believe in boys having to ask the dads, because we are strong independent QUEENS and no man owns me ever, but I hope this is still okay <33
not proof read and written super quick so sorry!
summary: Tom's terrified to ask your dad a very particular question question
///////////////////////////////////////////////
“Mr Y/l/n” Tom called your dads attention from the dishwasher he was loading up. The holidays spent at your parents meant a lot of good things- but mainly food. So much so the dishwasher was almost continually on, just so you didn’t run out of crockery.
“Its Y/d/n Tom, we’ve been through this.” He was joking but with your Dad - Tom could never really tell. At heart your dad was an absolute softie, except no one really saw that except your mum and you. Always a daddies girl, Tom knew how much your dad had meant to you. He had guessed before he’d met you parents , that he would be protective.
And that he was, never frontally rude or cruel. It was more subtle - though to Tom it was very damn clear, he had his doubts. As a people pleaser, Tom didn’t like the fact he didn’t like him. Time and time again, he’d tried to prove just how much you meant to him and yet it seemed to fall on deaf ears. So three years down the line, it was safe to say he was bloody terrified. Heart-in-mouth sort of event. Tom did a lot of ‘terrifying things’: talking to massive studio heads; going on stage with thousands of people screaming; jumping out a plane even.
But no, a single conversation with your dad had his adrenaline going like nobodies business. Asking to marry you.
“You going to just stand their gawking? I hope the moviestar doesn’t make my Y/n do all the housework?”
“No sir I-of course I don’t” Stammering his way through with wide eyes, Tom practically leapt across the kitchen to the opposite side of the dishwasher to your dad. Secretly your Dad was chuckling away to himself, taking absolute delight in how terrified the ‘movie star’ was of him, but managed to keep a steely outershell. In silence, the two uunloaded the dishwasher, Tom desperately racking his brains for conversation starters.
This is what he did for a living, learnt the speech he’d spent hours preparing, then retell it. Why then, was Tom having such an issue with the script he’d arguable practiced the most? Deciding he needed a buffer, Tom went to the safe space of small talk.
“So how was the pub? Y/n said you were meeting some old friends?”
“Watched the match, bloody awful game and Wilks was crap, I don’t know why he even started.” Now this football talk was something Tom felt safe in. He had learnt as much as he could about your dads team - just so there was some mutual conversation.
“Yeh tell me about it, I caught the last half. Though the ref made so bad decisions too, that penalty never really was VAR or not.”
“Thats the most respectable thing I’ve ever heard you say.”
The next couple of minutes were spent with both men raving fanatically, letting all their anger out on the pretty subpar game this afternoon. In fact, Tom swore your dad actually laughed along with him at one point. Admittedly he’d caught himself almost immediately- but for two seconds, he had cracked it.
With the last mug placed in the cabinet, Tom was quite frankly shocked at what your dad said next. He had presumed that since it was late and everyone else was in bed, Y/d/n wouldn’t want quality time with his daughters boyfriend.
“You fancy a nightcap son?”
He’d never called Tom that either. Frankly, you dad preferred the nickname ‘moviestar’ because he knew it infuriated Tom. Made the tips of his ears flush bright red, that was Toms tell - one that your dad had noticed too early on.
Jerkily Tom nodded, swallowing down the lump in his throat as he followed the elder man to the sitting room - where he kept the scotch glasses and bottle. No sooner had the drinks been poured, that Tom practically exploded with his thoughts.
“Mr Y/l/n-sorry I mean Y/d/n I-I um I needed to ask you something.” All he got was a long sigh and a nod, encouraging him to continue. “I-uhm….”Tom scoffed, clearing his throat because all of a sudden it felt like he hadnt had a drink in 10 hours, mouth completely dry.
“Well first off-and all respect. I know I don’t have to ask you. Y/n is the most independent and strong woman and we aren’t living in the 1950s. But, well but she loves you alot.” Tom stressed that last point especially, looking up to your dads poker face. It put him off for moment.
It was just how grumpy he looked, it was bloody terrifying. Taking a big gulp of the malty liquid, Tom steeled himself once again. “ And she respects you, your opinion always matters and I’d never come between that. And Y/n, she likes her traditions right? Like the stupid hat game you all play at Christmas dinner which makes no sense to me? Or the puzzle that you don’t start till everyone’s pretty drunk and tired at 3 o’clock in the morning on christmas? So that is… uhm thats why I’m asking you.”
Again all Tom was met with was a stern gaze, once again taking another generous sip of the scotch.
“Look I know you have your doubts about me- “ That got a response, a snort of agreement from your dad as if saying ‘you think’.
“But-but I really love your daughter. She’s my whole world and I can’t imagine being without her. And I know my lifestyle probably doesn’t fit with how you imagined your daughter to have. I mean-I’m not always at home and I’m away for months but- but…. look.” Tom sighed, shifting awkwardly on the sofa to directly face your dads armchair. “When I’m homesick and tired and grouchy from filming and I get back to the hotel I facetime Y/n. Everyday. And just seeing her smile, you-you know, the really soft small one that makes her dimples pop out? One look at that smile and everythings fine. Because all I’m thinking about is seeing that smile for the rest of my life. When she finds out she’s pregnant with our kid, when we’re taking them to college. I mean even when we’re 80 and probably sick of each other- she’ll still have that little smile that puts me into this sort of stupor. I just- I love her. And I’d do anything for her, I always will, I promise you that. So-so” With a shaky breath, Tom delivered his hitline.
“This is me just letting you know that I’m going to ask her to marry me and- I really hope she says yes.”
Tom was almost out of breath, and the breath he did have was shaky, looking up desperately at the older man across from him. He watched with wide eyes as your Dad placed his glass back on the drinks table with a clink, before leaning forward and standing up from the chair. He groaned slitghtly at the movement (his knees werent what they used to be) and took the two steps forward to be stood right infront of Tom’s seat. In that moment, Tom honestly thought he was getting a punch to the jaw at the very least. Afterall, he had just pretty much demanded that he were to propose to you.
As he braced for impact, tensing all his muscles, instead what he felt was a light pat to his right shoulder. Tom trailed his eyes up your dads figure to see what he thought was a gentle smile on his face too. Though he hadn’t ever seen your Dad smile at him before, so couldn’t say for certainty.
“You’re a good kid Tom, and you make Y/n very happy. Just pull yourself together when you ask her alright son? Didn’t think moviestars got stage fright.” And with that, your dad turned his back, heading toward the doorway that lead to the stairs to the bedrooms. Stunned, it took a moment or two before Tom processed - long enough that he had to leap up and call your dads name to get him to halt in the hallway.
“So is that a yes? You’re giving me permssion?”
“Oh Tom….” Your dad sighed in the lowlight of the hallway, in a more muted voice - now they were closer to the bedrooms where both you and your mum were sleeping peacefully. “ You already said, Y/n is strong and fiercely independent. I don’t control her, heck I don’t think she’s ever listened to me and never will. But…. for the record, I hope she says yes too and… I know she will.”
Scoffing in excitement, Tom combed a hand through his scalp, feeling such a wave of relief it was almost indescribable as your dad turned and trudged up the stairs. Once he heard the door of your parents bedroom close, he couldn’t help himself. He ran back into the kitchen, where he preceded to do an excited jumpy dance thing.
Because it meant a lot. To have your dads approval, to have your dads support. That meant the world. Not only for the sake of proposing but also, everything Tom said was true. He wanted to build a family with you - which meant that man was going to be the grandparents to your kids one day. That man had helped to craft you into the person you were today - his ‘person’. His perfect angelic, sweet woman.
Whenever he felt this excited, this happy, this elated - theres only one person he wants to be with. So, after turning all the lights off and checking the doors were locked (with a very obvious spring in his step) he then hopped up the stairs. Tiptoeing around, he got ready for bed in no time, before getting to the highlight of each evening.
Delicately he crawled into bed, sliding under the covers, so as to not disturb you. Naturally though, feeling the bed dip made you turnover- hooking your legs round his and resting your head on his chest. Tom chuckled quietly at your cuteness, stroking your cheek lightly with his thumb. It was enough to rouse you awake, enough to make you acutely aware of the thundering sound from his chest. With tired eyes, you propped your chin on his breastbone looking up at him with concern.
“You alright T? Hearts really racing.” He only replied with this loopy lovesick grin, his right hand coming to cup your cheek.
“Go back to sleep darling, I’m okay.” He did look okay, but he was almost too smiley and even with a foggy sleepy brain, you were still suspicious.
“Whats going on, you’re being weird?”
“Nothing…. your dad and me just had a chat… He called me son.” That shocked you too - clearly the conversation you’d had with him about being nicer to Tom had rubbed off.
“He did?”
“He did…. you are beautiful you know?” Now he was definitely being weird. You furrowed your eyebrows, as if trying to read his mind because something odd was going on in there.
“Now you’re just being creepy. What’s up?”
Tom just leant forward to kiss your forehead, then pulled you down onto his chest.
“I just love your family and I love you, you know that?”
“Are you trying to get into my pants? Because my parents are literally in the next room.”
“Oh shut up and kiss me.”

Heat Waves
Killer x gn!reader (amab edition) word count: 2.3k afab version a/n: so technically this ties in with the latest chapter of this fic - call it chapter 3.5 if you will, but it also works as its own stand alone thing sooooo here ya go. side note: i use the term palette which someone brought to my attention that not everyone uses in this specific context (could just be something my bio mom called it idk). in this case a palette refers to spreading out blankets, usually three or four, one on top of another - typically on a floor - making a makeshift bed. also you put a bunch of pillows on it. im not sure if there's another term for something like that - i only know it to be a palette lmao
You opened your mouth to retort when you suddenly felt his mouth on you. You shuddered and moaned, eyes rolling back slightly. His split tongue ran along the underside of your cock, placing you in the split and driving you mad. Ever since he split it, it’s been a whole new sensation to blow jobs and ass eating in general.
He only ended up getting it because he lost a bet and it ended up being one of the best things to ever happen. You’d never been so happy for him to lose - especially after he figured out how to use it to his advantage.
Your hand went down into his hair, roughly pulling at it and making him groan in response. You knew he loved getting his hair pulled at, it always riled him up the most.
Killer took the entirety of you into his mouth, beginning to bob his head up and down as he worked you. You felt his tongue swirl around you, driving you absolutely insane. “Killi,” you whined, rolling your hips. Everything about this man drove you positively wild.
He used one of his hands to press your hips down to keep you from moving and you frowned.
He pulled off your cock, swirling his tongue and flicking the tip. Your hips bucked, but didn’t go much of anywhere with Killer’s grip on you. You whined, wanting more from him - you knew you were close. He replaced his mouth with his hand, stroking you. Your head was spinning and your body buzzing. You were even closer now. “Killi I-”
Before you could get another word out or reach your peak, he pulled his hand away. You gasped, whining loudly in protest with his sudden lack of contact. You looked down at him and he had his hands up like he was surrendering. “Wh-”
“That’s for earlier, but you’re lucky that I’m too greedy to stick to the bit.” You stared at him in disbelief. You silently thanked whatever gods were out there because you’re not sure if you would’ve been able to function if he blueballed you here right now.
You felt his fingers start to play with your ass, knowing what was to come. You looked up, pouting at him slightly. “You know I only did that be-” Your words were cut off as you felt one of his thick fingers slide into you and move around. Your eyes rolled back as your hips did. “Oh fuck…”
A small chuckle came from him and you looked at him as best you could through your lusty clouded vision. “What are you laughing at,” you mumbled.
“Nothing in particular - you’re just cute.” You felt your face heat up. Why would he say that right now when he had you in the position you were in? You opened your mouth to retort before, once again, you were interrupted as he slid in another finger, really beginning to work on stretching you. You were trying to keep it together, but the moans let themselves out at this point.
You were usually quick with your words and tongue but in this state, it was all useless. Your lust for the man always won, words becoming a garbled mess.
He worked you, stretching you as best he could, not that you necessarily needed it. The two of you were fairly sexually active in your realtionship. You could feel yourself ready to be pushed over the edge once more as he worked. It wasn’t until he started to stroke you again that you really felt yourself starting to lose it. Your hips were rolling, desperate for more friction.
Then you reached your peak, hips bucking as you came hard, making a mess of Killer’s hand and yourself. You collapsed back into the pillows, panting heavily. “Fuck,” you breathed. He grinned, moving to clean you up and pulling his fingers out of you. You shivered as he did so, missing his warmth already.
His lips were on yours, hungry and desperate for you. You could feel the sheer lust radiating from him, sending shivers down your spine. It was almost a primal feeling coming from him and it made you excited.
He pulled away only for a moment, yanking off his own shirt. You hummed in delight, your hands immediately finding their way to his chest, grabbing at him before sliding around his neck and pulling him in for another make out session.
You felt his fat head pressed against you, making you shudder. You hadn’t even noticed him take himself out, not that you were complaining. Quicker the two of you were able to get down to business - the better. “I love you,” he mumbled. Before you could return the sentiment, he was already spearheading his way into you. And, as usual, your words came out in a garbled mess.
As he entered you, your walls stretched around him, a loud groan slowly making its way out of your body at the same time. Your nails dug into his back, dragging down. You’d make sure to also leave him with plenty of marks.
He didn’t go slow, but he didn’t ram himself into you quite yet. You could tell he was trying to take it slow to mess with you, but his own lust was taking over. It was enough to leave you panting by the time he bottomed out. You started to leave your own hickes and bitemarks along his neck and shoulders as he collected himself. Then he really started to let you have it.
He was relentless in his pursuits, slamming in and out of you. You howled in pleasure, your voice echoing in the night, causing some nightlife to skitter about in the trees. Whoops, you didn’t mean to be that loud.
Your toes were already curling as he ravaged you, head spinning faster than it had been before. Part of you was wondering if your soul was trying to rip itself out of your body. Speaking of your body, it tingled with pleasure and you already knew you were on the cusp of another orgasm. Your hand tangled with his hair, giving it a rough pull and you heard him growl lowly, his movements growing more erratic and desperate.
You cried out his name as you came again. You couldn’t see straight, could barely open your eyes at this point. His own hips stilled as he also reached his own climax, filling you up generously. You let out a small mewl, going mad. No words, no thoughts, only the man before you and the sheer pleasure he was giving you.
Your body buzzed as the two of you stilled for a moment, nothing being heard except for the two of you panting. He pressed soft kisses to you for a moment.
Then you felt him bring one of your legs up over his shoulder and your heart started racing. Oh, he wasn’t done. He really was going to let you have it - and you weren’t going to have it any other way.
He pulled up your other leg, doing the same with it. He was going to reach so deep inside, part of you wondered if he was going to really rearrange your interior with that one. Shit, he might end up knocking you up somehow with this kind of desperation.
You hardly caught your breath before he was back at it. He didn’t ease into it this time either, immediately going full force from the start. He slammed in and out of you, the sound of skin against skin echoing around. You let out garbled moans and noises of pleasure, barely able to keep your head up. The air left your lungs and you saw stars for a moment.
Your nails dug into his biceps, riling up your boyfriend even more. Suddenly, your vision went white and you came hard as he slammed into your sweet spot. You were a sobbing, blubbering mess at this point, and probably drooling too, completely lost in the world of bliss. You were on cloud nine. You reached self-actualization or whatever the fuck.
He slammed into your weak spot over and over and you were pretty sure you saw god for a moment. Your legs were numb, your entire body tingling and slowly growing numb as well. You were no more than a cocksleeve in this moment and you wouldn’t have it any other way.
It wasn’t long before his hips stopped again, filling you up once more. You came again as well, your bodies just synced up like that. You were twitching all over, trying to regain control of your body as you collapsed back into the palette.
You weren’t even sure which way was up right now. You felt as Killer let your legs down, making you hum along with some garbled noise as you felt him shift inside of you. He moved again, laying into the pile of comfort below the two of you, letting you rest on his chest. You were limp against him, having no energy to move right now. You closed your eyes, just trying to recuperate.
Slowly, you regained all feeling in your limbs and body. The tingling sensation was back as the numbness faded and you were able to move again. You slowly lifted your head, a lazy smile stretching across your face. You slurred something, the words unintelligible to the both of you.
Killer blinked before laughing. “That good?” You nodded, humming in delight as you kissed him softly.
“How you holdin’ up?” he asked. You shrugged, nodding. You were fine for the most part, just knew you’d be sore in the morning.
“Good. Cause I’m using you all night.” You blinked at his words as they sunk in. Your body was already heating up again with excitement. You knew that you were in for a long night and you wouldn’t have to any other way.

“You’re a stubborn one, ain’t ya?”
You managed to pool a mouthful of spit and blood and hocked it in the direction of your captor. Your breathing was heavier than normal after their relentless interrogation efforts. Time was lost to you; it could have been 12 hours or a whole week since you had been separated from the group and captured.
It had been a surprise attack; Torres’ intel didn’t account for the blitz that struck and took you away from Sam and Bucky.  It had all happened so fast—the smoke bombs, a harsh tase to your back, and you woke up here. In this hellhole.
The greasy interrogator lit a freshly drawn cigarette between his fingers and took a deep inhale, blowing the smoke out in your face. “How much longer do you think you can hold out love?”
You refused to look him in the eye as he took another puff. With a screech of his chair and a few steps forward, he yanked the back of your hair and made you face him. As you gasped in surprise, he plunged his mouth into yours and exhaled again. He planted himself firmly against your mouth and nose; you couldn’t release his breath at all. The smoke burned your nose, throat, and lungs as you choked on it.
He finally, finally, pulled away and you struggled to breathe as tears streamed out of your good eye—the other was swollen shut—and down your bruised face.
“I can hold out as long as you, darlin’. Trust me, I’m enjoyin’ myself.” He said, eyeing your uniform. He unsheathed a dagger from his belt and did a quick and clean slice up the center of the clothing, leaving you exposed in just your bra. With your hands chained to the seat behind you, there was nothing you could do to cover yourself.
You kept up your stone-faced resolve. It was an intimidation tactic, and you wouldn’t give him the pleasure of watching you squirm.
“Yeah…Yeah, I think I’ve found some more to enjoy.” The dozen lackeys spread throughout the big, empty room either snickered or stayed eerily quiet.
Before you could manage to spit at him in disgust a second time, you heard a clutter of noises down the hall. They were stifled through the thick walls, but consistent and growing closer.
For the first time in what felt like an eternity, a warmth of relief spread through your stomach and you managed a small smirk.
“The hell is going on out there?” One of his henchmen by the door grunted as he pulled out his gun.
“Don’t ask me you moron, go check on it!” The lead interrogator barked. The one by the door nodded to the man next to him and they entered a code into the keypad. With a hiss, the door slid open, and the two rounded the corner to search.
As the door slid back to a close, the leader of the group finally seemed to register the look on your face. “And what the fuck has you looking so giddy?”
“The last mistake you’ll ever make.” You rasped out, giving a full bloody smile, counting down in your head.
By the time you reached down to one, there was a slam against the door to the room, a large, rounded dent showing in the thick metal. The pounding continued, each time adding a newer, thicker bulge to the door. It only took a few more punches until the door flew into room, knocking down one of the men.
And there he was in the doorway, with his shining arm and clear blue eyes. There was just a moment as he locked his gaze with yours and you saw wave after wave of relief, rage, and an assessment of the room all come through his face in that brief second.
The lead interrogator started screaming for his men to attack, but they were already at a critical disadvantage. Bucky was on a warpath, and everyone else in the room was just fodder when it came to his end goal: you.
One of the men dangerously close to the avenging soldier stuck his assault weapon right in Bucky’s face. Gripping the front of the gun, the ringing of bullets stopped at his vibranium palm and jammed the front of the weapon. Yanking it out of the henchmen’s grip, Bucky swung out with it and clocked the aggravator clean across the face, knocking him out cold. These weren’t super soldiers they were dealing with; just sneaky men with big guns and smoke bombs trying to play in the big leagues.
And Bucky was tearing through them like tissue paper. You couldn’t help but feel growing satisfaction; the only thing that would’ve made it better was being free to do it all yourself.
As you watched him move through the room, calculating, quick, and aggressive, the average eye could assume The Winter Soldier was active again. He was snapping guns in half like they were twigs, flipping through the air, and throwing men into each other so hard that they crashed into the wall and laid dazed on the ground. All of this while deathly silent and his eyes glazed over in a look of duty and fury.
Except when he sparingly glanced back at you. Quick looks, making sure you were still there. In those quick, apologetic glances, you could see what he was saying. ‘I’ll be there in a second, hold on.’
He was taking care of the last of the lackies when you felt a hand grip your chin and cold metal shove into your temple. You could feel the slight shaking coming off the leader, as he whistled loudly to get Bucky’s attention.
After an effective punch to the solar plexus of the last of the henchmen, Bucky spun around and set his sights on the handgun rammed into your face. His muscles tensed and for a second, you saw terror flit through his blue orbs before rounding back to steely resolve and rising to meet the gaze of the man that held you captive.
“Drop your weapon.” A demand, with a wall of threatening anger standing tall behind his words.
“Not a chance, Barnes.” The man squeezed your face, making you hiss in response. Bucky’s fists tightened. “If you come any closer, her brain turns into confetti.”
“You do that, and nothing will stop me from breaking every one of your bones into splinters with my bare hands.” Even though you were currently held at gunpoint, Bucky’s threat made you go cold, and a shiver ran up your spine. You didn’t have to be close to the super soldier to know he sincerely meant every word coming out of his mouth.
“You won’t risk it. Not on her life.” His finger hovered over the trigger. “I know that arm comes off your body. Remove it.” Bucky didn’t move a muscle until the man jammed the gun hard into your face, making you wince and causing a quiet cry to escape your throat. “Now!”
Bucky’s resolve broke for an instant, his face panicked until he locked eyes with you. You tried to make it as apparent as you could with just your facial expressions; you had a last-ditch effort ready. Your pupils flicked down to the man’s hand holding your jaw, and you gave a slight and quick head tilt back and looked to Bucky’s face to see if he knew what you were plotting. He understood you like no one else, and with a hesitant, affirmative nod from him, you moved with haste.
Your teeth gnashed down into the man’s hand as you shoved your feet into the floor and launched your chair backwards into the goon behind you. Natasha had taught you this move way back when. The man yelped in surprise and started shooting wildly. You fell to the floor as you watched Bucky cover himself with his arm as a shield, the bullets showering off his vibranium buffer as he surged forward.
You couldn’t see what happened after Bucky had rushed past your line of sight, but the noises you heard told you that he was giving a thorough, yet justified, beating to the man that had haggled with your life.
Even though you were sure Bucky could go at it all day, it wasn’t long until you felt his arms around you, gently pulling your form and the chair upright. He twisted his metal fingers into your shackles, attempting to safely free you, all the while saying “It’s alright. I’m here, you’re safe.” You guessed he was reassuring himself as much as he was reassuring you.
You wanted to jokingly ask “What took you so long?” But you knew he was probably internally beating himself up, asking the same question. Instead, you settled on a quiet but sincere “my hero.”
Your bindings fell to the floor in a flurry of metal clangs and even after singlehandedly dismantling an entire room of kidnappers, Bucky was unprepared for the way your arms whipped up and around his neck, pulling him down to you. His arms instinctively enveloped you, and you knew, you were certain, that you could never feel safer than you did in that moment.
He breathed in all of you, and briefly closed his eyes, relaxing into your hold like warm putty. Both of you needed this more than the other realized.
You pulled away briefly, feeling tears run down your face in warm streaks again, this time in relief. His thumb gently padded them away, careful to avoid your bruised eye, and then rested on your lips. You had no idea how long your eyes were locked into each other until you heard a groaning behind Bucky.
Your stomach, currently swirling with relief and pulsing with adrenaline, felt a hot stab of anger strike through you as you made your way to the man angrily grunting on the floor; Bucky hovered protectively behind you as you moved.
The man’s left arm had been dislocated, and you saw some of his teeth sprinkled on the floor around his face. Your arms stiffened with growing fury as you remembered all of the hell he had gleefully put you through—all of the pain, and embarrassment. You started to reflexively pull your torn clothes around your torso until you felt the warmth of Bucky’s leather jacket cover you. It smelled of pine, and fire, and gunpowder, and just—him. It made you tingle from head to toe as your arms found their way into the sleeves—well, one of the sleeves. Your left harm hung out the gaping hole that was normally meant for Bucky’s vibranium extremity as you zipped up the front.
“We gotta get moving. There are probably more coming that’ll be here any second.” He looked back over his shoulder to the open doorway as he debriefed you, his hand lightly tugging at yours.
“Just give me a second.” You squeezed his hand in response and knelt to fully tower over the shell of a man that had once joyfully taken part in torturing you.
It looked like he was about to say something, probably snarky and condescending, but you beat him to the punch with a swift uppercut into his solar plexus, like Bucky taught you. All of the air left his lungs in a pained shout and he curled into a fetal position, wrapping his one good arm around himself and groaning.
You stood quickly and turned to Bucky, who nodded approvingly and looked impressed, but not surprised, at your aim and the power of your strike. “Okay, I’m good to go now…” your voice faded; the adrenaline flushed out of your system like water running from a faucet. The strong wall that you had put up to survive the interrogation began to dissolve, and it suddenly took everything you had to stay standing, or even keep your eyes open. Your knees gave way and Bucky’s arms were around you in an instant, breaking your fall.
“Hey, (Y/N).” He carefully tapped your cheek a few times trying to rouse you. “Hey, c’mon, stay with me. Please. (Y/N)!”
“Mmmm so sleepy…” you mumbled. “Quick nap, then I’ll be…” you trailed off unwillingly from the dizziness and heard him curse as he hastily called into his earpiece for Sam, demanding he fly his ass and shield down to our location, pronto. His arms swiftly and surely lifted you up into his chest.
‘Thank you for finding me…Bucky’ You would have sworn on your life, in that moment, that you had only thought those words. You had no strength remaining at this point, and darkness was closing in around you. But you must have either said it out loud, or you and Bucky truly had an impenetrable connection. Because he gave your form a light squeeze and the last thing you heard was him mumble assuredly.
“Always.”

~
Rowan’s eyes drooped as he walked into his home after a long day of work, desperately needing a nap on his lumpy couch. He set out to make some coffee for later tonight, knowing that he’d have to stay up again to finish another project for his summer class.
Rowan probably shouldn’t have procrastinated his assignment in order to spend time with Aelin at the carnival earlier this week, but he’d rather that than have Aelin spend time alone with Chaol. Just the thought of his name made Rowan scoff.
After being friends for a couple of months, Chaol had recently become Aelin’s new summer fling. Rowan always knew he’d had ulterior motives, but when the idea was brought up to Aelin, she’d laughed and said, “If anyone here had ulterior motives, it’d be me.” Rowan had no clue as to what Aelin was talking about, but she’d insisted that it was only a one-time thing and so far, had been determined to keep a buffer between them, which meant that Rowan had to accompany them on every single “date.”
Despite grumbling the whole time to Aelin at the carnival, Rowan had to admit feeling satisfaction after shoving the ice cream into Chaol’s face in order to prevent him from kissing Aelin. While Aelin looked amused during the whole ordeal, Chaol looked the exact opposite with a scrunched up mouth and furrowed brows. Rowan thought he looked constipated.
Maybe, he was. Rowan shook his head, no no, he was definitely angry.
Rowan smiled to himself as he poured boiling water into the coffee strainer over his mug. Letting it sit when he finished, he walked over to his couch and laid down, allowing his body to rest after hours of exhaustion. His eyes drifted closed as he thought back to Aelin’s situation with Chaol.
Rowan didn’t understand why Aelin wouldn’t just break up with him if she didn’t like him at all. Hell, he doesn’t even understand the reason why she does half the things she does, her mind truly baffles him. He wouldn’t trade her for the universe though, not for anything. Every single part of Aelin fuses to create the most amazing person Rowan’s ever met; Rowan adored everything about her—her witty remarks, her melodious laughter, her long golden hair, her beautiful turquoise eyes with a ring of gold, her bizzare and wicked humor, just about everything.
Gods, don’t even get Rowan started on her smile. Rowan fucking loves her smile. He would do anything in the world for her face to brighten with that glorious smile of hers. It’s the first thing he thinks of in the morning and the last before he goes to bed. Just thinking about her can light up his mood and make him smile.
Settling into the couch even more, Rowan drifted off to sleep with a smile on his face and his mind stuck on Aelin.
~
Rowan woke up with a start, accidentally jerking the dead weight on his arm. He felt warm breaths puff against his chest as he looked down at the culprit of his numb arm. Aelin lay in his arms, halfway on top of him, with her arm thrown across his waist and her legs entwined with his. Rowan smiled as he looked at her slightly open mouth and her golden blonde hair cascading down the edge of the couch.
Rowan had to get started on his project soon and he had his coffee waiting for him, but he couldn’t even move with Aelin lying on top of him, not that he wanted to anyway. So, giving in to this small defeat, Rowan stroked Aelin’s hair as he thought about his dream.
Rowan woke up to a smattering of kisses across his face and the loud giggling of a toddler, followed by quiet laughter. He felt a slight weight on his chest and small hands grabbing at the skin on his face. Opening his eyes, Rowan was met with striking cerulean blue eyes and a head of silver hair.
“Hey, papa!” The toddler grinned at Rowan, eliciting a smile from him.
“Hey, baby,” Rowan grabbed the toddler’s head and placed a loud smacking kiss on her forehead, evoking even more giggles from the kid.
He noticed Aelin drifting closer, hands cradling her swollen belly. “Alaïa wanted to wake you for breakfast. It only seemed fair to have her loudly slobbering all over you as your wake-up call since we all woke up early to make breakfast,” Aelin smiled as she spoke, her face glowing with happiness and amusement.
As Aelin sat on the edge of the bed, next to Rowan’s arm, she leaned down and pressed a kiss to his lips. Leaning in towards his ear, Aelin whispered, “Hurry up and get your spectacular ass downstairs before all the food is gone.” Aelin gathered Alaïa into her arms before leaving the bedroom.
By the time Rowan was downstairs, breakfast was in full swing. Instead of going to the dining table, Rowan stayed standing at the foot of the stairs, observing his family. A girl—with the same golden hair as Aelin and the same pine green eyes as Rowan—ate quietly with her shoulders back and her head held high. The boy across from her—with Aelin’s eyes and a head full of silver hair—smiled at his younger brother who was struggling with getting the food onto his spoon. The younger boy looked exactly like Rowan, as if someone made a clone of him with his hair.
Alaïa was a sight to behold. With food on her face and clothes, she looked to be having trouble maneuvering the food to her mouth with her spoon, accidentally flinging it into her silver hair instead. She seemed to be on the verge of tears from frustration, but with one quiet laugh from Aelin, Alaïa peered over at the smiling Aelin and gave a little giggle.
Aelin glanced up at Rowan in that moment and opened her mouth to say, “Da—”
A small noise of content broke Rowan out of his reverie. Rowan looked down and noticed that he’s still stroking Aelin’s hair as she nuzzles her head further into his hands. A small smile graced Aelin’s face, making her appear peaceful. Watching Aelin sleep made Rowan smile; he could watch her do anything and never get bored because he was just so enamored by her.
Rowan jerked to a stop. Enamored? His brows furrowed in confusion as he thought back to Aelin. Rowan does not believe he can live his life without Aelin in it; he doesn’t even want to think about the prospect of it.
As a groan broke out of Aelin’s lips, she snuggled closer to Rowan. He watched as her eyes fluttered open and she took in her surroundings before smiling up at him. It was the sight of that smile that made Rowan realize the truth of why he’d felt so satisfied upon smashing that ice cream cone into Chaol’s face and why his heart beat a bit faster whenever Aelin’s attention was on him. Just like it was now.
“Hi,” she croaked, voice still hoarse from sleep.
Rowan smiled, “Hi.” He looked around before looking back down at Aelin, “So, how’d you get in here?”
Her brows furrowed in confusion before she quickly snapped her fingers. “I broke in by using a rock to smash your windows,” Aelin grinned. Rowan felt blood draining from his face at her answer.
“WHAT?!” Rowan sprung up from the couch and walked to his front windows. Knowing Aelin, that couldn’t be exaggerated and didn’t sound like it’d be far from the truth. However, as he got to the curtains, he heard quiet giggles and turned around in time to hear them turn into loud cackles of laughter.
“Calm down, Buzzard. I was only kidding. I snuck into your backyard and used the key you hid in your shed by breaking down the shed door.” Aelin rolled her eyes at his exasperated expression, “Oh, don’t be so dramatic, you told me where you hid the spare key when you were confessing secrets while drunk off your ass,” Aelin waved a hand.
Rowan was never so mortified before. Secrets? Not just one, but more?!
Aelin must’ve seen the mortification written on his face because why else would she bellow with laughter like she was right now. Rowan just shook his head as he walked into his kitchen and grabbed his mug of coffee.
By the time he got back, Aelin was scowling at her phone.
“What’s wrong?” Rowan asked as he sat back on his couch and took a sip of his coffee. Aelin only groaned before throwing her hands up in the air and kicking her feet like a petulant child, causing Rowan to chuckle at Aelin’s antics.
“Chaol wants to go on another date,” Aelin frowned. “He’s insistent on continuing to meet up until he has to go back to Rifthold by the end of the summer.”
Rowan couldn’t help but frown along with Aelin. “I don’t understand why you won’t just call it quits. You obviously don’t like spending time with him.”
Aelin rolled her eyes in return. “I find his company companionable and I want to keep having him in my life.” Aelin sighed, “Anyway, can you please join us? He wants to have a picnic on the beach this Friday.”
Rowan thought about seeing half-naked Chaol and his grabby hands around half-naked Aelin on the beach and grimaced. He did not like the idea of seeing Chaol around Aelin at all, let alone a half-naked Aelin, so Rowan definitely had to go.
Rowan sighed as he ran his hand over his face, “I’ll go.”
“Really?” Aelin beamed. At Rowan’s slight nod, Aelin shifted on the couch and squeezed Rowan tight around the waist. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” She murmured into his chest. Rowan wrapped his arms around her frame and squeezed her back. Rowan could definitely get used to this. Aelin pulled back a second later and stood up from the couch. “Okay, I’ve got to head home and feed fleetfoot now,” Aelin smiled, “Thanks for the amazing power nap.”
“Break in again anytime,” Rowan smiled as he heard her chuckle.
“Yeah, yeah, Buzzard.” Aelin waved goodbye before leaving the living room and closing the front door behind her.
Upon hearing Aelin leave his home, Rowan thought back to his revelation earlier today. Rowan Whitethorn was in love with his best friend and she didn’t even know it. He was screwed. He was so irrevocably screwed and he had no clue as to how he’d get himself out of this mess.
~
Rowan was fuming. He swore that steam was blowing out of his nose and ears like those cartoon characters. Aelin had given him a popsicle to “cool off” and right now, Rowan felt like a petulant child at the beach.
The whole day, Rowan’s been doing his damn best to block Chaol from Aelin, but it seemed like Chaol caught onto his game and is now quicker with his actions. Aelin hasn’t been helping either. Not with the way she’s voluntarily playing in the water with Chaol right now in her show-stopping black bikini with embroidered little golden dragons.
Earlier, Chaol offered to put sunscreen on Aelin’s body for her. Before Rowan could beat him to it, Chaol had already started applying the cream to her long tan legs. Aelin didn’t even protest, but she didn’t miss the sharp glare Rowan sent Chaol’s way, silently laughing at Rowan.
It certainly didn’t help when Chaol was applying the sunscreen slowly, as if trying to memorize the feel of her skin. And instead of quickly stopping Chaol, Aelin keenly kept an eye on Rowan, an amused look on her face as she caught the narrowing of his eyes.
A while later, they played in the sand together like two toddlers on a date. Aelin giggled the whole time as she buried Chaol in the sand and created a mermaid body for him. Rowan figured she needed help getting sand so he repeatedly kicked sand towards Chaol from where he sat on his beach chair. A lot of the sand landed on Chaol’s face, which earned him a shout and glare from Chaol, but it wasn’t Rowan’s fault that the sand landed on his face when Rowan aimed it towards his neck.
Totally not his fault. Must’ve been the wind.
Aelin seemed to be amused by the whole ordeal, if the twinkle in her eyes and the giant smile spread on her face were anything to go by.
The rest of the day seemed like it was “Ignore Rowan Time” because they both ignored Rowan and kept to each other. They went to buy popsicles together and deserted Rowan at the beach. They reappeared about twenty minutes later, only to desert him again to go into the water. Rowan had enough of it.
Now, Rowan watched from afar as Chaol put his slimy hands all over Aelin, carrying her onto his shoulders and dropping her into the water. Sighing in frustration, Rowan angrily bit down a big bite of the popsicle before throwing the rest into the trash can a few feet away.
Grumbling the whole way, Rowan walked down towards the water, looking for ways to easily throw Chaol into it. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Aelin spin towards him, smiling as she looked at him. Rowan returned a small smile, hoping it didn’t look like a grimace.
As Rowan crept towards Chaol, he kept eye contact with Aelin, conveying his plans to her through the movement of his eyes. Aelin’s face shone with amusement as her eyes held a mischievous gleam. Chaol, noticing something amiss and Aelin’s wandering eyes, turned just in time to be tackled into the water by Rowan’s broad shoulders.
Aelin cackled as Chaol’s arms flailed above the water, paying no attention to Rowan as he stalked toward her. It was already too late by the time Aelin felt herself get lifted by Rowan’s hands.
“Don’t you dare, Buzzard,” Aelin warned as she repeatedly slapped Rowan’s bare back. Rowan only slapped her butt in return, to which Aelin quickly gasped, “Rowan Whitethorn! You did not jus—”
Aelin was thrown into the water before she could even finish her sentence. Rowan watched in amusement as Aelin’s arms flailed before she pulled herself above water, spitting a mouthful of salty water at Rowan’s chest. Wiping the water from her face, Aelin glared at Rowan before running as best she could in water and trying to tackle Rowan. Rowan was immovable, but he grabbed her around the waist and fell backwards into the water anyway, pulling Aelin with him.
Up above the water again, Aelin glared at him and huffed as she crossed her arms over her chest, Rowan’s arms still encasing her to his body. Rowan’s chuckle reverberated through Aelin’s body from where their bodies were touching.
The sun was setting, creating beautiful hues of pinks and oranges that reflected off of the many white fluffy clouds in the sky. Seeing Aelin bathed in that light was surreal. The ring of gold in her beautiful turquoise eyes, eyes that Rowan loves, more accentuated in the golden sunlight. Her golden hair glowing as if it was on fire. Aelin looked stunning.
Aelin grinned as Rowan’s hand flattened against her waist, his fingers contracting as if debating letting her go. Rowan noticed Aelin’s hand lifting to cup his face. Her hand was warm, as though the warmth of the sun she personified extended to her fingertips.
Rowan stared into her deep questioning gaze, eyes inquisitive as if waiting for him to do something. Rowan could only stare as she carefully stroked her thumb across his cheekbone, her hands slick with the beach water.
His eyes locked onto hers as she lifted her other hand to his face, her fingers tracing the lines of the tattoo along his temple. Rowan’s breathing turned ragged as he was reminded of the day’s events: how he was constantly left behind to watch over their things, how he was left out of the activities Aelin and Chaol had chosen to do, and how utterly frustrated and defeated he’d felt when Aelin didn’t try to avoid Chaol’s advances on her.
“Rowan,” Aelin breathed as her fingers slid down the side of his tattooed cheek, reminding Rowan of the way she’d touched Chaol today and how she’d allowed that touch to be reciprocated.
He quickly yanked both wrists off his face. He didn’t want her to touch him when she was fawning over some other man. He dropped her hands and stepped back, staring at her as she briefly closed her eyes in hurt.
“Don’t do that,” Rowan rasped, “Don’t—touch me like that.”
Aelin swallowed, her face burning red, “I’m sorry.” She backed away a step. “I’m sorry,” she repeated. “It was nothing.”
Rowan’s eyes shuttered, “Good.” The word repeated in his head. “Fine.”
Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.
Rowan kept a neutral face as he stalked away, trying not to look like a wounded puppy. He quickly toweled himself off before gathering his things and leaving the beach without Aelin in tow.
~
Rowan didn’t know why he was here. He’d definitely ruined things between him and Aelin if the hurt on her face was anything to go by. But, Rowan couldn’t go to sleep knowing that he’d done something that hurt Aelin. He’d lied in his bed, staring at his ceiling before deciding to just go apologize to her. He didn’t look at the time at all, just put on some clothes and left his house. He didn’t take his phone, didn’t take anything but the keys in his hands.
Now, Rowan was staring at a small two-story cream-colored house. Kingsflame flowers lined either side of the short path leading to the front door. Aelin’s favorite flowers.
“Fuck,” Rowan sighed. He shook his head as he slowly brought it to lean against his car horn. “I should’ve gotten her flowers.” He glanced at the clock to see if there’d be a possibility for him to make a quick trip to the flower shop. 2:48, the clock read.
The flower shop wouldn’t even be open at this time.
Rowan sighed as he quietly got out of his car and made his way up to Aelin’s door, dread pooling in his stomach at the idea of Aelin ignoring him completely. As Rowan waited after ringing the doorbell, he took note of the light ballad coming out of Aelin’s small home, the sorrowful melody hitting him in the chest. Aelin only ever listened to that type of music when she was feeling heartbroken and Rowan was hurt knowing that he’d been the one to cause that pain.
He rang the doorbell another time before deciding that she probably couldn’t hear if her music could be heard from outside. Sighing, Rowan pulled out his phone and called her, hearing the music pause for the duration of an unanswered call, and waited until the call went to voicemail before he reluctantly walked to the fourth kingsflame flower from her front door.
Rowan, then, got onto his knees and dug out dirt until he was met with Aelin’s spare key, which was only supposed to be used in dire emergencies.
Oh, this was very dire.
Grimacing at his dirty hands, Rowan walked back towards the front door and opened it before getting inside. Rowan threw the spare key onto the counter before rinsing his hands and hightailing towards Aelin’s bedroom.
Slamming open the French doors, Rowan’s eyes frantically searched for Aelin, finding the woman standing at the threshold of her connected bathroom in nothing but a blue towel wrapped around her lithe frame.
Shocked still, Aelin stood with wide, puffy, red eyes and a frown marring her beautiful face. Rowan knew she’d taken a bath to feel better, but it wasn’t enough to abate her emotions if the tears still lining her eyes were anything to go by.
Rowan’s chest hurt, his face crumpling in pain at the sight of her. “I am so, so sorry, Aelin,” Rowan apologized as he looked deeply into her sorrowful eyes. “I hadn’t meant to react like that—like your touch had been so repulsive that I had to quickly get rid of it. But when you did touch me, I was reminded of how you’d touched Chaol earlier in the day, how you’d allowed yourself to be touched by him. I didn’t like watching you with him, let alone touching him.” Rowan took a step forward and some of his anxiety quelled at the insistence in her eyes for him to keep talking. “I was mad and I took it out on you. I’m sorry.”
Aelin seemed at a loss for words as she silently processed everything he’d said, her eyes analyzing his face as she searched for the sincerity of his words. Her head tilted slightly as if trying to further understand his words. “Why were you mad?”
Rowan subtly winced as rubbed the back of his neck, ducking his head and staring at the wooden floor. “Like I said, I don’t like Chaol,” Rowan explained.
“No, no. You said you didn’t like watching me with Chaol. You were jealous,” Aelin deadpanned.
“Mad or jealous, I don’t care. All I care about is you and the fact that I love you,” Rowan shouted as he threw his hands into the air.
Aelin’s breath hitched as she stared in shock at his sudden outburst. Her mouth opened and closed a couple of times before she gaped at him. “Wh-what did you just say?” Aelin sputtered.
“I had a dream, Aelin. I was woken up by a 2 or 3 year-old child and she was laying on my chest when you walked in. You told me that you had her wake me up by giggling and kissing my face because while I slept in, you and the kids woke up early to make breakfast. Our children were in that dream and you were pregnant with our fifth child.” Rowan ran a hand through his hair before he took the remaining steps between them and gently cupped her face as he looked into her eyes. “When I actually woke up, you were right there in my arms. I’d never been more peaceful and content than when you were in my arms. As you were laying there, I’d realized I wanted that dream to become reality. And, I wanted that with you. You’re it for me, baby. You’re my dream and my forever. I love you, Aelin. Please forgive me.” Rowan gently rested his forehead against hers as he wiped the tears streaming down Aelin’s face.
Aelin’s hands came up to grasp his elbows as Rowan leaned down and kissed her right cheek, his hands moving to tuck her hair behind her ears. His lips moved towards her other cheek, pressing another light kiss there before moving onto both of her eyelids. He continued placing light kisses onto her forehead, her nose, and her chin.
As Rowan got to her lips, he angled his head away from her face to stare into her eyes, seemingly asking for permission to continue his path. When Aelin reached her hands up and gently cradled his face as he slowly leaned in, Rowan threw all caution to the wind and finally pressed his lips on hers.
Kissing Aelin was better than anything Rowan had ever known. The soft and hesitant, yet determined and insistent press of her lips against his set his body on fire. Rowan felt like he was burning inside out, but he didn’t care because every second with this woman in his arms was worth burning to ashes.
Pulling away, Aelin looked into his eyes, placed her hands on his shoulders, and said, “I know.”
Rowan pulled back a bit, pressing another kiss to her lips before looking at her questioningly. “What do you mean you know?” Rowan gently rested his hands on her waist and pulled her closer to his body.
Aelin sighed, “I mean, I know that you love me. Don’t worry, I love you, too, Rowan.” Aelin leaned onto her toes to lightly kiss him on his lips. “Why do you think I’d devised all these plans to make you jealous anyway?” Aelin shrugged.
Thrown off guard, Rowan froze as he stared her down. “Plans to make me jealous? What are you talking about? How did you know?”
“All I have to say is that you need to learn how to control your alcohol intake. Getting a love confession from my best friend when he’s shitfaced drunk was not how I planned on learning about his undying love for me.” Aelin waved a hand, “Anyway, I had Chaol act like an obsessed lover so you would get riled up and finally make a move. He’s truly only a friend that’s visiting for the summer and he has a fiancée back in Adarlan; she's actually in on it too, so no need to worry. I’m not so sure if my plan was a good or a bad idea, considering the tumultuous outcome.” Aelin glanced up at him to gauge his reaction.
Rowan didn’t know whether he should laugh or cry. A sudden laugh erupted out of Rowan, startling both him and Aelin. “It was definitely a good plan if I’m able to be yours in the end,” Rowan muttered, leaning down to kiss Aelin.
Aelin pulled back and quirked a brow. “Who said you could be mine?” The question was paired with Aelin’s arms crossing over her chest. Rowan immediately paled.
“Well,” Rowan rubbed the back of his neck, “I assumed that since you reciprocated my feelings, you’d be my girlfriend now, but…” Rowan trailed off awkwardly.
“Did you ask yet?” Aelin inquired, a serious expression taking over her face.
Gripping Aelin’s hands in his, Rowan looked into her eyes as he asked, “Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, will you do me the honor of allowing me to become your boyfriend?”
Aelin pretended to be thinking for a few seconds, eliciting a pinch in the side from Rowan. Aelin grinned, a smile so beautiful, Rowan would be a fool to not smile back.
“Of course, Buzzard.”

Zoo Day is Today
Cartoon Beetlejuice x Reader
Word Count : 11,275
Your first field trip after starting work as a teacher for Miss Shannon's School For Girls. A simple trip to the zoo. You even have a student's uncle there to help you chaperone. Everything was nice and planned out, surely nothing could go wrong.

--=--=--
The morning sun steadily rose but had not yet chased off the nipping chill of the night. A shiver ran down your spine and you pulled your jacket tighter over your chest. You only brought a light coat for the day. Hopefully, if you focused on your work, the chilly bite could be easier to tolerate.
You tapped your pen against the edge of the clipboard. The papers listed off groups, schedules, notes on animals, and a map. On the page of groups, you circled the list of students assigned to you. Seven girls of which you knew only two.
You had been teaching at Miss Shannon's School for a month, but you memorized the names of the two most infamous students. Claire Brewster and Betty Juice. And lucky you, the school assigned both girls to your group. How wonderful. You prayed this field trip wouldn't end up a disaster.
The girls mingled in front of the main building, eager to get onto the buses. Once you had glossed over the list, you peered over the assemblage of students. Other teachers gathered their students to line up for the bus, and you needed to do the same.
There was no sign of Claire or Betty, so you shifted your search to the others in your group. You called out the names listed as you walked the perimeter of the cluster of girls, and one by one you gathered them.
Bertha, check. Prudence, check. Mindy, Gwen, check and check.
You accounted for over half your group and given them red bands that just left three more students. Betty and Claire were still nowhere to be seen, making a Lydia Deetz the next student for you to find.
The short redheaded girl with glasses, Bertha? Or was it Prudence? Regardless, the shorter girl pointed out a dark-haired student with hair styled in a bob cut. You thanked her and left to speak with the next student.
The girl stood off to the side next to a man that you noted bore a striking resemblance to Betty. The man's wardrobe gave a sharp contrast to the prim and proper appearances the headmistress cultivated for the school. He wore a vibrant Hawaiian shirt in magenta patterned with neon green bones. Clashing with that were his shorts striped vertically in black and white bars. Rather unusual, but to each their own.
You focused back on gathering your group and get their attention with a small cough. The two stopped their conversation and turned to you, the girl giving you a pleasant smile when she did.
"Good morning, teacher."
"Good morning, ah..." You trailed off and checked your clipboard. "Lydia. How are you?"
"Good! I can't wait to get to the zoo!"
The man chimed in saying, "Kid's been excited to go all morning. 't's all she's been talking about for the last few days."
"Uncle BJ!"
The girl huffed while the man snickered with a crooked smirk. You bit your lip and fought to keep your shoulders from bouncing from your own laugh. You cleared your throat and ignored the slight pain in your cheeks from resisting a smile.
"So then, Mr...?"
"Beetleman."
"Mr. Beetleman," you said with a nod, "Will you be helping chaperone the field trip?"
"Yep!"
"Alright. Then since Lydia is in my group, you'll be with me as well." You helped Lydia get the red band on her wrist. Just two more students. "Lydia, are you by chance close to Betty Juice? You wouldn't know where she might be, would you?"
Mr. Beetleman opened his mouth only for Lydia to cut in, saying, "She's out sick!"
You frown and nod, jotting a note on the paper. "That's unfortunate." While you didn't like the idea of a student missing out on a field trip, you couldn't help the relief that washed over you. No Betty, that only left—
"Ugh! Like, what do you mean I'm stuck with Lydia and her weird friends?"
Claire Brewster.
You took in a deep breath and let it out as a slight hiss. Before you headed over to Claire, you pointed Lydia and her uncle over to the rest of your group. They made their way to join the others and you steel yourself to talk to the irritated blonde. When Claire noticed your approach, she wore a pout on her face.
"Teacher! You can't seriously expect me to be in a group with Lydia and her weird friends. Let me switch with someone else!"
As if you hadn't asked the same thing once you saw the roster for your group.
"I'm sorry, Claire. The groups have already been assigned. Miss Shannon doesn't want there to be any switching around. Now here's your band and if you could come over with the rest of the group, we can—"
"Red? Ugh! This day just keeps getting worse! Red doesn't go with my bow, or eyes, or anything! Why can't it be pink?"
"Claire, it's just a band to keep things organized. No one is going to notice or even care, I promise. Please, come over here with the rest of the group so we can get things going."
"Fine."
You hummed on your walk back, happy to have rounded up everyone. With a quick go through attendance, you marked off all the students present. Once done, you asked Mr. Beetleman to watch the girls while you turned in the attendance sheet to the headmistress. You returned and smiled at your group. "Alright, does everyone have everything they need? Lunches, spending money?"
Most of the girls nodded, while a few checked through their bags to make sure they did. After a minute, everyone had everything in order. You nodded and flipped through your clipboard.
"Alright, we'll board the buses soon. Mr. Beetleman since you'll be helping me chaperone—"
"Oh great. I'm stuck with Lydia and her grody relative."
"Claire!" You jerked your head to her with a deep frown. "That is highly disrespectful! Apologize this instant!"
Claire huffed and gestured to the man. "But he is! Just look at him!"
You narrow your eyes at the girl, then glance to Mr. Beetleman. His appearance was definitely abnormal, with eyes a tad more sunken and yellowed than what seemed healthy. Mr. Beetleman flashed you a smile where his slight overbite showed off crooked teeth. He may be a tad odd, but that was no reason to insult the man. You gave him an apologetic smile before turning back to Claire.
"Claire. Apologize to Mr. Beetleman right now or I'm going to insist that you sit out the field trip."
You tapped your foot, waiting. She groaned, rolling her eyes before she spat out a short, insincere apology. You shook your head and rubbed at your already aching temple. This was going to be a long day.
Once given the go ahead, the teachers and chaperones ushered their groups on to the buses. They assigned your group to the last of the three, and you were the last to board. The other two teachers on board sat in the back while the students scattered across the rows, clustering in the middle of the bus.
You followed your students and watched them pick their seats. Claire sat with girls from the other group. Most of the others took their seats, intermingling as well. You had shuffled into one of the front benches and noticed Lydia and her uncle had sat behind you with one empty one open as a buffer.
You scanned over the girls, all chatting and abuzz with excitement, as the bus driver pulled out from the school grounds. Before you turned back to face forward, you made brief eye contact with Mr. Beetleman. Claire's remark replayed in your head and you glanced away, frowning. That comment didn't sit right with you. You cleared your throat to get his attention and offer another apologetic smile.
"I'm sorry for earlier. Claire is... not always the best with social skills."
He shrugged with a lopsided smile. "No skin off my nose."
You gave a slight nod and glanced over to the blonde gabbing with the other students. So young and full of potential. If only she'd apply it to things other than her vanity. You shook your head and looked back to Mr. Beetleman, who had his hand over his nose.
"Are you alright?"
"Uncle BJ is fine!" Lydia said. "He just has some allergies that have been acting up. That's all."
"What the kid said." he nasally said while holding his nose.
"Oh no, do you need an antihistamine or anything? I could break one in half so you don't get too drowsy."
"Nah, I'll be fine. Thanks though, teach."
He let go of his face and gave grinned, showing you there was nothing to worry about. You covered your mouth to hide your own growing smile.
"If you're sure. But don't be afraid to ask if your allergies get worse. I have a travel first aid kit with me."
For the rest of the drive, you triple checked the schedules and your group's tour route. The first field trip you'd be going on as a teacher for the school. A simple trip to the zoo. You wanted it to go as smooth as possible.
You could still hardly believe you landed this job. It's rare for a position to open, but the last teacher in your spot left with little notice. He said he had gotten too stressed to teach anymore. But you had heard through the school gossip that it was more likely an excuse to get away from a certain student.
You shook off those thoughts. It's best not to dwell on rumors. You needed to focus on doing the best job you could.
The bus stopped at the front entrance. Outside the window, the students from the other buses waited in rows to get into the zoo. The teachers from the back stood up once the bus stopped and lead their students out. Once it was just you and your group, you got up from your seat to do the same.
You lined up your students at the end and waited for Miss Shannon to take care of the admissions. Groups were let in one at a time, and you quadruple checked the tour plan as you waited. Finally, it was your turn to go inside.
"Alrighty girls. The first stop is the penguins."
The girls' anticipation nearly hit its breaking point. They followed you like a flock of ducklings as you navigated the park. Between the map the school provided, and the boards set up for visitors, you found your way to the Arctic section. Once in that area, however was when it got a little more tricky. You mixed up the paths and ended up taking a detour by the puffins and walruses.
After those brief stops, you lead the students to the correct enclosure. The girls ran up to the divider, noses pressed to the glass, and watched the Antarctic birds. The girls moved around to watch different penguins, looking under the water level to see the ones swimming, while the ones on land preened each other. Most the students gushed over the cute birds, and you noticed Lydia off to the side bobbing along with a penguin whose attention she caught.
You hung back and smiled at the girls. It was adorable to see the students so ecstatic. Even Claire cooed at the penguins, though you heard her comment on how the penguins should totally wear cute pink dresses rather than tuxedos.
You shook your head with a roll of your eyes.
You flipped through your papers looking for the lecture notes for the penguins and notice Mr. Beetleman had taken a few steps back. His niece sprinted from one end of the glass to the other, while the penguin on the other side followed her movements. She also interspersed her laps with snapshots of the birds.
"Looks like your niece is enjoying herself."
Mr. Beetleman turned his attention towards you. He huffed a small laugh and showed off a crooked but kind half smile. "Yeah, kid's got a soft spot for animals, no matter how big, or scary, or smelly."
Your lips twitched up in a small smile.
"What about yourself, Mr. Beetleman? Any animals that you have a soft spot for?"
"I like to think of myself as quite the connoisseur of bugs. Especially beetles."
"Is that so?" You asked with a laugh. His faux posh accent caught you off guard. You coughed into your hand and did your best to ignore the pain in your cheeks from biting back a smile. "Well, you're in luck. We go through the insectarium before we break for lunch. They have a large exhibit of bugs from all over the globe."
Most of the students voiced their disgust with groans.
"Like, we have to go see gross bugs before lunch?"
You closed your eyes and took in a breath before you bothered to turn to Claire. You forced a pleasant smile and let the air out through your nose in a short huff. "Yes. We're going through the insectarium later—"
The girls groaned and made more disgusted sounds.
"—I know not everyone likes bugs, but they are an important part of nature and we're going to be learning about them."
Most of the students made disgusted faces. Mr. Beetleman and his niece looked to be the only ones interested in the exhibit. You hummed and flipped over your papers to get back on track. Might as well start the lesson part of the tour, since everyone had their attention on you.
You read off the prepared notes, and prompted the students with questions. The short bookish girl answered most of the questions, though you encouraged the other girls to answer when they could.
Once wrapped up with the penguins, you—with the aid of Mr. Beetleman—ushered the students to the next animal on the schedule. Next up was the polar bears, which were technically Arctic and not Antarctic, but hey the zoo only had so much room available.
You arrived at the polar bears' enclosure to find them lazing. Two sat on the land in large piles of snow, while the third floated in the water. Like before, you hung back to let the students watch, but they were far less engaged this time.
Mr. Beetleman stepped back once more to let his niece watch and get photos from all angles of the bears. You hunted for the next lesson in your notes but spied Mr. Beetleman step back a tad more than last time. You paid it little mind until he said, "With all this excitement it's almost un-bear-able," under his breath.
You sputtered a laugh and raised a hand to your mouth to hold back more. Despite your attempt, however, you caught his ear. He looked to you with a half smile showing off crooked teeth.
"You like that one? Maybe you and me aren't as much of polar opposites as I thought! Seems like all these arctic animals are helping break the ice!"
You bit your lip and pressed your knuckle to your mouth, but you couldn't stop your shoulders from bouncing as you snickered. You didn't want to disturb the other visitors, but he made that difficult with his goofy puns and cute face.
You took in a breath to let out gently, only for it to get chopped up from more laughter. There were lessons to be taught. You needed to get yourself under control. Poised and proper, you could do this. You coughed and cleared your throat as quietly as possible.
You gave your fellow chaperone a playful glare before you gathered the girls to a central spot for the lesson. One or two of the students yawned as you read off the notes. You gestured to the bears as you read another factoid.
"Polar bears are the largest carnivo—what on earth?"
Your train of thought crashed when you looked out at the bears. The two on land stood on their hind legs and dived into the water. All three met in the deepest part of the pool and swam in a circle with an eerily human synchrony.
You couldn't bring yourself to look away, afraid it would break the spell. But you had to know if anyone else saw that too. You pried away and found your students and many other visitors had their eyes glued to the bears. Good to know others took notice of the bears' swimming skills.
"Wow! I never knew they could swim like that!" said a taller brunette from your group.
You watched the bears again. They swam in circles, each bear matching the strokes of the others; left, then right, spin, then dive. You were at a loss for words. To witness such a spontaneous act from them, and done so well, it was as if it were magic.
The routine lasted a minute, ending with the bears looking around, confused. Whatever showboating spirit overtook them, it had left. Even they didn't know what had possessed them to do that.
You blinked a few times and gathered your thoughts. The lesson continued, but the girls and you glanced at the bears several times throughout the rest. The polar bears, however, returned to lazing around their enclosure. When you finished the lesson, you announced the next stop.
"Okay, next stop is the seals!"
On the walk over, the students chattered among themselves, still baffled by the polar bears' routine. Mr. Beetleman laughed with his niece, though you couldn't hear the topic. He caught you looking back, and you whipped forward to focus on leading the way.
Much like the last few times, the girls rushed to the glass to watch while you and Mr. Beetleman stayed back. You kept your eyes forward, watching over both the students and the seals. Despite your focus, you still noticed Mr. Beetleman taking a few side steps in your direction.
"I see this one gets the seal of approval from the kids."
You press your lips tight, redirecting your laugh as more stuttered exhales. With a smile growing on your face, you turned to get a better look at the man and find him sporting a grin of his own.
You cleared your throat and in the most deadpan tone you could muster, you said, "Mr. Beetleman, that has got to be the seal-iest thing I've ever heard."
He blinked and his features sank a bit, only for his grin to grow back even stronger. "Animal humor, you know I love it!"
You let out a giggle and shake your head. "So how are you and your niece enjoying the trip so far, Mr. Beetleman?"
"Lydia's loving it, and I can't complain much. But You don't have to keep bein' so formal. Ya can just call me BJ."
"BJ? Hmm, may I ask what it's short for?"
He stiffened at your question before he reached up to scratch the back of his neck. "Short for? Yeah, it's uh—"
"Uncle Ben!" You and Mr. Beetleman turned to his niece Lydia, waving him over. She pointed to one seal flopping around on the land part of its enclosure. "Isn't it so cute?"
He walked over to Lydia. She took photos, some with her uncle posing in them. You chuckled to yourself and gave the girls one more minute before the next lesson.
Afterwards you moved on to the next animal in the arctic section, followed by another, and another. Soon your group made it through the entire section and moved on to the next. From the Arctic to South America, followed by Europe, then Africa.
In between your lessons as the students gawked and cooed at the various animals, you laughed more and more at Mr. Beetleman—no, BJ's jokes. You even got him to laugh at a few of your own jokes. There was a childish sense of pride and glee that swelled in you any time you got him to laugh.
"You know, teach, seeing all these lions is giving me the urge to sing." BJ said as the kids watched the large cats.
"Oh?"
"Yeah, breaking out into 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' is just a whim away. A whim away. A whim away."
You bit your knuckle and shook your head at him as you fought back tears and laughter.
"Trust me, teach, I ain't lion. It's a real paw-blem."
You couldn't hold back your fit of laughter anymore and snorted louder than you'd like. A few of the girls looked back at you and BJ, and you hid your burning face behind your clipboard. You take a few quick breaths to calm yourself, fighting the smile on your lips as you did. Once calm again, you shoot the man a playful glare.
"You are the worst, have you no since of pride?"
He beamed at you and you call the girls over to get the lesson started before he can crack more jokes. As you went through the last lesson of the African section, you calmed more, but your smile stayed plastered on your face. Once the lesson wrapped up and you asked the last of the questions, you announce the next destination.
"Time to head to the insectarium."
Most of the girls groan and make disgusted protests. You let out a sigh and open your mouth to say something, but BJ spoke up first.
"You heard your teacher, kids. Gotta get going!"
BJ ushered the kids along to get them moving, and you knitted your brows in a mix of amusement and bewilderment. BJ had helped keep the students together and moving along, sure, but that was the first time he did so with any sense of diligence. The man must really like bugs.
You rolled your eyes with a smile and lead the group. With the map on your clipboard you follow the asphalt path to the insectarium, weaving around the growing crowds as you made your way there. Unlike the other animal enclosures, the insectarium was a building all to itself. A man exited the building, towing two young boys, and blew passed you. You huffed and held open the door as BJ ushered in the group of less than enthused girls.
The warm, muggy air hit you as you followed the girls inside the building. Countless displays of bugs filled the room, lining the bright orange walls and placed in various rows. Signs throughout the room showed pictures of spiders, praying mantises, centipedes, and scorpions, as well as butterflies, dragonflies, and beetles. While the floor was spacious and open, the displays formed a few nooks and crannies that obscured parts.
The students stayed clustered around you, not that eager to venture a glance at the displays. Most of them, anyway. Lydia grabbed her uncle's hand and pulled him away to a section full of spiders. Two girls you noticed hung around Lydia, the tall brunette and short redhead, also mustered up the courage to break off and peruse the exhibits as well.
The remaining three followed you and didn't dare approach any of the glass displays. You hummed and scanned the room. Perhaps if you showed them the tamer and prettier looking insects, the students would be more engaged. You gestured to them and guided them through the displays.
Brightly colored butterflies and gem-like dragonflies darted in their large cases off to the side, away from the more creepy crawly bugs. The girls peered around you and took a few steps over to see the enchanting patterns on some of the butterflies' wings.
Except for Claire.
"Teacher! I don't want to be here. Like, it's just a bunch of gross bugs."
"Bugs are very important, Claire. Here, do you like flowers?"
"Well duh. Flowers are pretty and they smell nice."
"Well, flowers need to be pollinated in order for there to be more flowers. And do you know how flowers get pollinated?"
"No."
"Bugs. Bees, and butterflies, and even some beetles. They go from flower to flower and get pollen all over. Which helps the flowers make more flowers. Bugs are an essential part of a lot of other animals' diets. If there weren't any bugs a lot of animals would go hungry."
"Gross, who would want to eat bugs!"
"Birds, lizards, fish. Heck, even people sometimes."
"Ew! Nasty! I would never eat a bug. Like, why eat that when I could have something fancy like lobster?"
You bit your lip and held back a laugh. This poor, naïve child. You debated on whether you should tell her. Before you decided, Claire huffed and marched over to watch at the butterflies with the others. It was probably best to keep quiet on the matter, but boy was that child in for a rude wake up call.
You sigh and left to check on the others. The brunette and redhead—Prudence and Bertha, or was it Bertha and Prudence? Which ever way it was, the pair watched an orchid mantis climb flower stocks. The shorter one in glasses smiled at you and read out loud the plaques for the orchid mantis. You asked them a few things on the insect, and the brunette chimed in with some answers. You praised the two and smiled.
After jotting notes, you scanned the room for Lydia and BJ, only to frown when you saw no trace of them. You tapped your pen against the clipboard and scanned the room again. Claire was still with Mindy and Gwen at the butterflies. Bertha and Prudence were right next to you. So where were Lydia and BJ?
You walked through the rows of exhibits searching for Lydia, but there wasn't any sign of her. Prickles of fear crawled up your spine, and you hurried your pace. You tapped your pen faster against your board to let out your building anxiety, but it never spent enough energy. Once you looped back to Prudence and Bertha, you asked them if they had seen Lydia and her uncle.
The redhead—Prudence—pointed out where she last saw Lydia. You thanked her and weaved your way through the exhibits as fast as you could without running. The displays jutted out to form a nook tucked away from the rest of the floor. At one display, with eyes glued to the tarantula in the case, was your missing student. You put a hand to your chest and let out a relieved sigh. The sound caught the dark-haired girl's attention, and she waved you over to watch with her.
"Teacher look! Isn't she pretty!"
You crouched to look at the fuzzy arachnid meandering across the gravel floor of its enclosure. Dark brown hairs covered its body save for the legs. Stripes ran down its legs in long thin bars of the same dark brown and contrasted with ones in ivory. You looked at the name for the specimen and read it.
"The Costa Rican zebra tarantula, or striped-knee tarantula. I see where your uncle gets his fashion advice." You said. It got a laugh out of her, which got you chuckling as well. After a quick sweep of the area you realize BJ wasn't there. Your lips sank into a slight frown as you hummed in thought. "Speaking of, where is he?"
"Oh! Um. Uncle BJ said he had to go to the little boy's room."
A thunderous clatter cut through the air, followed by shattering glass and screams. A wave of icy fear crashed over you. You told Lydia to stay put as you bolted around the corner to see what happened.
Your eyes grew to saucers. Toppled displays, shattered cases, and an angry swarm of bugs filled the room. Those with wings whizzed by, while others spread out from the crash sites as an infestation.
Your students and the other patrons scrambled to get any distance possible from the bugs. You bit your lip. What do you do? What can you do? Keeping the girls safe was your utmost responsibility. You tightened your grip on the clipboard charge to the group, swatting at any bugs daring to cross you.
"Girls! Outside!"
You darted straight for the front door and gave the group a sharp look. The students wore various nervous expressions, not wanting to go through the swarm of bugs to reach the door.
"NOW!"
Bertha and Prudence were the first of your girls to budge. They ran out, followed by the other patrons, then the last of your group. You ran out hot on their heels and got your girls grouped together. You counted heads—Bertha, Prudence, Claire, Gwen, Mindy. Five. Where?
Your heart sank.
"Stay out here. Stay away from the doors, get back and wait for me or a Zookeeper."
You swallowed the lump in your throat and pivoted. You rushed back in and find the swarm had spread to fill the now empty room. Among the infestation you could see bright warning coloration. Whether the colors of true venomous insects or mimics, you didn't want to hang around and find out. You held up your clipboard and took in a few steadying breaths.
"Lydia! Where are you?"
"Over here!"
You rushed over to the voice, avoiding as many bugs as possible. Despite that, they grazed your exposed skin and buzzed passed your ear. One of them even bumped up against your lip. You pushed your shivers down, dead set on getting your student out of there.
You looped around the displays to find the path of least resistance, only to stop dead in your tracks when you get to Lydia. Wasps, several of them, all buzzing between you and Lydia. You tapped your nails against the clipboard as your mind raced to work out what to do.
You bit down on the clipboard, hard enough to hold it, and stripped off your jacket. You shuffled things, so the board was under your arm and held the jacket in both your hands.
"Lydia. I'm going to count to three, and you're going to run over to me. Okay? Run as fast as you can."
She nodded, and you counted.
"One."
"Two."
"Three!"
Lydia bolted over to you, getting the wasp's attention. You threw your coat over her and scooped her into your arms. Once you had a hold of her, you made a mad dash to the front door, as angry buzzing chased you. You reached out for the handle, yanking it as hard as you could, only for it to stay closed. You held Lydia tighter and pulled again. Still nothing.
"Shit. Why would they lock the fucking door!" A sharp stabbing pain shot through your calf, and you buckled some from the pain. "Shit!"
"Teacher? Is—"
"Shi—um sorry. It's okay. Just got to find another way out."
You turned to search for the emergency exit and winced when you moved your stung leg. The buzz of insect wings beat against your ears, and you swore it was getting worse. You wanted to cover your ears, but that wasn't an option while you held Lydia.
"Ribbit."
You flinched and found a fairly large frog munching away on what remained of a wasp. The chihuahua sized frog sat staring up at you for a moment with bright yellow eyes. Its pattern and coloration reminded you of a poison dart frog, but no species of them grew bigger than a few inches at most.
Once the monochrome striped frog ate the last of the wasp, it hopped away on long legs ending with bright red toes. Its tongue lashed out and snatched more bugs, devouring them in seconds and reducing the swarm at an impressive rate.
As the frog thinned out the bug population, you carried Lydia towards the emergency exit on the far side of the building. A long green blur shot out in front of you, and you flinched back with a squeak. You glanced to where the blur came from to find the frog retracting its striped green tongue with a freshly caught beetle.
"Teacher? What's going on?"
"It's alright, this frog just startled me."
"A frog?" Lydia asked, squirming in your arms. She pulled down your coat to look and when they made eye contact, the frog croaked at her too.
"He must be in froggy heaven with all these bugs out. But we still need to get out to the others. And wait, where's your uncle? Oh no. Is he still in here too?"
"I'm sure uncle BJ is fine! He's probably just... getting something to eat after he went to the restroom."
You hummed, still worried something could have happened, but you still needed to get Lydia and yourself out. The frog croaked again before it hopped away to catch more lunch. You huffed with a small smile and continued to the exit.
Once outside with the door shut behind you, you set Lydia down and walked her to the rest of the group. The girls clamored around you as you approached, asking to know what happened. When your responses didn't give them the answers they wanted, some students switched to bombarding Lydia with questions.
"Girls, please. I'm not sure what all caused the bugs to get out. I'm sure the zookeepers can handle it from here."
"Teacher, was it scary to go back in there?"
You offered a half smile and gave the students a few answers, hoping they'd more readily follow instructions with a sated curiosity. Once they asked their questions, you asked one of your own, wanting to know what happened while you were getting Lydia.
Apparently one zookeeper, thinking everyone had cleared out the building, locked the front door before running off to get help. You pressed your lips tight when you heard that. On one hand, you understood the keeper's actions, but on the other they should have poked their head in to at least check!
"Hey teach, everything alright?"
You whipped around to find BJ sporting a sheepish grin.
"Mr. Beetleman! Oh, thank goodness you're okay. Yes, everything is alright. Everyone is here." You said and heaved out a sigh. You glanced back to the girls. "Alright, let's all sit down and make sure no one else got bit or stung."
You guided the students over to benches on the side and had them sit. One by one you examined them, checking arms, legs, faces and necks. Once you checked over every student, you breathed a sigh of relief. No one had gotten bitten by any of the bugs. You took a seat and tended to your sting when there was a yelp from one student.
"Like, ew! Something bit me!"
You got up to look over Claire again and found a mosquito on her upper arm. You pinched it between your fingers and dusted it off her.
"Ew! Gross!"
"Well, it's gone now. You can wash off your arm before we break for lunch."
Claire pouted, and you did your best not to show the flicker of annoyance on your face. She's just a child and the whole bug escape had everyone on edge. You blew out a small breath and went back to tending to your minor injury.
Once washed off and slapped with a bandage, you got up and stretched your leg. It still hurt, but was tolerable to wait for the painkillers to take effect.
The staff returned shortly after and pushed everyone further back. You asked if they needed you to stay and give any testimony, but the gruff staff member just told you to leave the area. Rude.
You huffed at him and pivoted to march away, ushering the girls away. If he needed nothing from you, then so be it. The girls needed to get to lunch, anyway. As you guided the girls away, the man let out a shout. You looked over your shoulder to see him swatting at the air, likely being honed in on by a few mosquitoes. You huffed once more and looked forward. Out of the corner of your eye, you noticed BJ chuckling to himself with a few glances back of his own.
The school organized for everyone to meet for lunch in the same picnic spot. When you arrived, you got the kids to wash up before heading to the tables for lunch. The group scattered and mingled with the other groups already dining. You smiled only for it to fall as you looked for a seat. The students took up most of the tables, with the other teachers taking up one of their own. And the teachers' table was so crowded, asking to sit there would just be awkward. You'd only been teaching at the school for a month and had yet to make friends with any of the other teachers. Sure, you were professional and polite, but that didn't mean you were much more than acquaintances.
An empty table off to the side sat a tad ways away from the other tables. You hummed to yourself and walked over to claim it. As you mindlessly nibbled away at your meal, you watched over the other tables to make sure the girls didn't get too rowdy.
"Excuse me teacher, may we sit with you?"
You snapped out of your trance and found Lydia smiling at you and still wearing your jacket. She held her uncle's hand and pulled him closer to the table. You blinked and swallowed your bite of food with a nod.
"Oh, uh, sure. I don't mind."
She grinned and sat diagonally to you, leaving her uncle to sit directly across from you. Lydia set her lunch box on the table and took off your jacket. She haphazardly folded it and leaned over the table to hand it back to you.
"Thank you for saving me. Those wasps were furious."
"Yeah, I kinda got the point back there. My leg still hurts a bit. Oh, and um... If you could not mention my more colorful word choices to anyone, I would appreciate that."
BJ tilted his head and asked, "Colorful word choices? Do bugs normally make ya shout out the colors of the rainbow? Ooh! What color would you say for spiders?"
"Uncle BJ, that's not what they meant."
"It's not?"
You bit your knuckle, trying and failing to hide your laughter from bubbling out. The pair took notice, and you waved them off while you fought to stop laughing.
"I'm sorry," you said in between laughs, "You two are just really cute."
Lydia giggled into her hand while BJ scrunched up his face and stuck his tongue out. You bit harder on your knuckle as your shoulders bounced. How were they so cute?
You got your laughter to subside and resumed eating your lunch. Lydia did the same, but BJ had nothing in front of him.
"Are you not going to eat, Mr. Beetleman?"
"Nah, I got some grub back when we were at the bug house. And ya really don't have to keep calling me that. Like I said, just call me BJ."
"Right. I'm sorry Mr. Beetle—um, BJ."
A smile stretched across his face as his nickname rolled off your tongue. You smiled back with a giggle.
Lydia looked back over her shoulder and said, "I think I hear Bertha and Prudence calling me to go sit with them! Thanks again, teacher."
She dashed off with her lunch a moment later. Curiously, it looked like her friends had only just rounded the corner. But you couldn't blame the kid for wanting to sit with her peers over adults.
"So, um, BJ. Are you okay after the little... insect fiasco? I'm sorry I forgot to ask earlier, I was just so worried the girls might have gotten hurt."
"Oh yeah, babes, I'm fine, no need to worry about me."
You blinked once or twice with a growing warmth on your cheeks. The new moniker caught you off guard. You murmured the word to yourself and felt the warmth intensify. Another giggle bubbled up in you, and this time you didn't suppress it.
"Well, I'm glad you're okay, too. Though I missed you while we were going through the insectarium. I would have grassed you'd hop at the opportunity to make all the insect puns you could, Mr. Beetle-man."
"Nah, jokes like that really bug me."
"That's hard to bee-lieve."
"Glad my joke didn't fly over your head."
"I'm gnat that gullible."
He snickered with a grin, showing off crooked teeth. That, strangely enough, suited him. You couldn't help but join in with a chuckle of your own. He certainly was cute, even if he didn't agree. Your laughter trailed off a moment later with a warm hum.
"So, BJ, do you live in Peaceful Pines or somewhere close?"
"Eeh... My place is kinda close, but hard to get to. It's this out of the way neighborhood that you've probably never heard of."
"I suppose so, considering I'm pretty new to Peaceful Pines myself. What do you do for a living?"
"Oh. Well... I~ 'm... A musician!"
"A musician?"
"Yeah! In between gigs right now."
"What do you play?"
"Better question is what can't I play! Guitar, drums, keyboard, ukulele, armpit!"
That last one got a sudden laugh out of you, and you bit your lip to stop your abrupt laughter. "My, that's quite the assortment of instruments." BJ's smile stretched at your compliment and you couldn't help but smile back. "Have you written any of your own songs?"
"Oh yeah! Loads of songs! Smells Like Ten Spirits, Ghoul Is In The Hearse, Boo-hemian Rhapsody."
"Sounds spooky. I wouldn't mind hearing you play sometime," you said with a small giggle.
Whatever he planned on saying died in his throat, and he pressed his lips tight for a minute. You could have sworn that his pale tone flushed with a bit more color at that moment. Which honestly got you to giggle more.
"Really?"
"Of course! I'd love to hear you play! I love all kinds of music. What sorts of genres do you play? Rock? Metal? You mentioned a keyboard, do you play any electronic?"
He glanced away and rubbed the back of his neck, still sporting more color than normal. But he wore a smile on his face, so that's good.
"Ah, you know, a bit of this and a bit of that. I don't know what genre they'd actually fall under."
"Well, I'd still love to hear it."
"Heh, yeah. Maybe sometime."
You smiled and took a few more bites of your lunch. Between bites you asked about the town and what was there. Sure you knew the bigger things like where the grocery store was, but you had yet to venture out and explore Peaceful Pines. BJ made outlandish claims concerning the town, like how he and his niece set up a store one time and everyone in town clamored to buy from them. You rolled your eyes and listened to his yarn, smiling as he got invested into telling his stories.
When lunch ended you rounded up your group, the other teachers doing the same. Some girls grumbled over having to part with their friends in other groups—Claire—most other students fell in line with little fuss.
As the students cleared out from the tables, other zoo patrons overtook them. One group being a man with two boys loudly griping something or other about schools. You shook your head and focused on looking after your students.
After counting everyone, you lead the group to finish your tour through the zoo. The next stop on the schedule had you at a smaller farm-like section. You guided the girls to the front of the gated area and lead them into the main pen. Various cute domesticated animals stood around with the odd zookeeper milling around, supervising.
"Alright girls, you have some time to go see the animals. Please be gentle!"
The kids scattered, seeking different animals. As they left, you overheard Claire voice her disgust regarding the smell of the stinky farm animals. You let out a sigh and rubbed at your temple.
"I don't get what she's complaining about. This place smells great!"
You sputtered a laugh and glanced sidelong at BJ. Your lips curled into a half smile as you shook your head.
"BJ, you are—a very strange man."
"Hey babes, 'Strange' is my middle name."
"Is it now? Ben J. Strange Beetleman?"
"Uh... Yep. That's my name don't wear it out!"
"You're a goof." you said laughing. You scanned over the large pen and saw the students with animals. At least this time you had an unobstructed view of all of them.
"So, teach, how you liking your job with the school?"
You blinked and glanced at him before you thought over an answer. "It's been tricky, but I'm extremely thankful to have gotten this job. I still can't believe the last teacher just left though."
"Mr. Greener?"
"Yes actually. You knew him?"
"Yeah, he was a piece of shit! Lyds put a lot of work into a group project but because he hated me—my other niece Betty, he flailed them!"
"Oh dear, please try not to let the girls hear that language," you said. The distance between you and the girls made it unlikely that any of them could hear your conversation. But you'd still wanted to be careful. "I'm terribly sorry to hear that, though. Did you speak to the headmistress to get your nieces' grades corrected?"
"Eh. Sorta. Except I went and saw Mr. Greener personally."
"I hope he was reasonable."
"Yeah. Nothing a bit of juicing couldn't solve."
"J-juicing?" you asked, tilting your head. "Like, you went out for drinks?"
He flinched and rubbed the back of his head. BJ shifted his weight from one leg to the other before he pointed a thumb in Lydia's direction. "Something like that. Hey, I'm going to check on Lyds."
"Oh, of course. I should check on the other girls too."
He nodded and jogged over to his niece and her friends. He was far enough away that you couldn't make out what he and the girls were saying. Whatever it was, the girls giggled, and BJ ran his fingers through his pale blond hair as he glanced away.
You chuckled to yourself and looked over your clipboard. As you flipped through the pages, a loud bleat came from behind you. A lamb sneaked up to you in search of affection. You knelt to dote on the small lamb and it bleated at you more. After you cooed at the baby for a minute you stood back up, you still needed a to check on the students.
You circled around the petting zoo pen and counted each of the girls. A bonus of your walk was the chance to find other animals on their lonesome and in need of pets. Claire and a girl with a ponytail found rabbits to hold. One student was with a small flock of chickens, while Lydia and her friends gave a goat love and affection.
You made it to a corner of the pen away from most of the other animals save for a lone donkey and resting ducks. You smiled to the donkey and stepped closer, gently reaching out a hand to give the cutie a pat on the head.
The donkey enjoyed the attention and butted its head into your hand more. You giggled and scratched the top of its mane, which appeared to be significantly lighter than what was common for donkeys. Then again, given that it also had zebra stripes, it may be a hybrid.
You left to speak with the girls only for the donkey to follow you. It nudged your free hand asking for more pets, and you laughed. You broke every time and gave the little donkey more pats and scratches as you made your way to check in with the students.
You got over to Lydia, Bertha, and Prudence and greeted them. After a quick hello to them, you end up getting another nudge from the donkey. You caved yet again and patted its head.
Lydia gave the donkey an accusing look, and it responded with a huff. You chuckled at the exchange.
"Is something the matter?"
"No teacher, I'd just keep an eye on that donkey if I were you."
"Oh, he's harmless," you said and bent down to pet the animal's head, "he just likes the attention. Doubt this poor guy is as popular as the other animals here."
You scratch along the back of its ear down to the back of its jaw. The donkey, in response, leaned its cheek into your palm.
"Such a sweetheart."
It blew its lips at you and got a laugh out of you.
"No? You sure?" It huffed at you and you scratched its cheek more. "Alright, have it your way."
You gave it one more pat on the head before you stood. The donkey, despite its chagrin, still followed you. Throughout your check in, the striped donkey nudged at you, demanding more affection. You checked in with Gwen amid the chickens, then proceeded to Mindy and Claire. The pair each cradled a bunny. You greeted them as you walked up and asked how they were doing. The donkey took a few steps closer to Claire and brayed loudly in her face. It startled the rabbit she held, causing it to squirm out of her arms and hit the ground running.
"Ugh! You stupid, ugly thing! You scared off my cute little bunny!"
You took a step, wanting to get her to calm down in case she got the animals upset. Before you could, the donkey brayed in her face again and dropped to the dirt. It rolled on the ground and kicked up an enormous dust cloud that got in your eyes. The girls started coughing, and you ushered them away from the donkey, enjoying his dirt bath.
"Come on, let's see if you can get the bunny back. Or maybe there's another animal here you'd like to play with."
The blonde huffed as she adjusted her bow. She said nothing and marched off in search of another rabbit to hold. You sighed and spared a glance at the donkey wallowing. It rolled onto its legs, tucking them under its body, and looked your way before it blew a raspberry at you.
When the time came to head to the next destination, you got the students to line up near the entrance of the petting zoo. Lydia and her uncle lagged behind, and you swept the area to see where they might have gone off to. The only real hiding spot would be the large open barn.
You turned a corner and could hear BJ's voice before you saw him. "What? I'm telling you, Lyds, it was an act! I was just playing the part."
You stepped closer and cleared your throat to get the pair's attention. Both their heads jerked your way, and you gave a half smile. "It's time to go. We need to get to the Asian section of animals next."
Lydia's face lit up, and she grabbed BJ's hand. She pulled him along, saying, "Let's go! I can't wait to see pandas!"
You shook your head as she dragged him passed you. However, you called after them when you got a look at BJ's back.
"Goodness BJ, did you fall down? You're covered in dirt."
You closed the gap between you and dusted off his back. Some of the light brown dirt came off, but the shirt needed to go through the wash to get off the rest of it. Once you wiped off all the dirt you could, you smiled at him and lead the way back to the others.
You held the gate open for everyone. The girls chatted among themselves, still gushing about the cute animals. As BJ passed by, you noticed his face flushed again. You hoped his allergies weren't too severe, but he never asked for an antihistamine, so they must have been tolerable.
You fished through your bag for the bottle and bumped into the arm of a man. You stepped to the side and apologized. His sunburnt features twisted into a sneer. He said nothing as he walked with his two screaming boys into the petting zoo. You tapped your finger against a metal piece on your bag before you hurried off to get back ahead of your group.
You lead the group through the other continents, showing the students animals from Asia followed by North America. You and BJ kept up your jokes while the girls watched the different animals on the tour. To your surprise, BJ even sprinkled in a few more questions about yourself between jokes.
You shared your favorite movies with him, a story about an awful vacation you had a few years back, and what insects you were fond of the most. BJ then told you his own answers. Like how The Exorcist was his favorite comedy, he hated trips to his aunt and uncle's place, and how beetles were his absolute favorite bugs. No surprise on that last one.
You lead the group to the last of the continents for your tour. Your chest ached as you counted the handful of animals left to visit, but you put on a smile and lead the students through the Australian part of the zoo. The girls cooed at the kangaroos and flinched away from crocodiles in the middle of their own lunch. BJ even flinched away from the large perentie lizard that, as far as you could tell, was just soaking up the sun in a nice little sandy spot. When you got to the last animal on the list, the girls rushed to the railing.
"Hey! Don't climb on the railing! Get down from there!"
"But like, I can't see the koala bears!"
"I said get down Claire. And they're not bears."
The girl did as told, but she groaned and griped. You frowned, but let it be so long as she nor the others climbed up again. The kids had trouble getting good vantage points, but with time everyone found spots to watch the koalas. Once the kids settled, BJ stepped back to crack a few more jokes with you.
"Goodness, BJ, you sure have a vast pool of jokes to pull from."
He cracked a half-smirk-half-smile at you. "Well, it's nothing but koala-ety jokes from me babes."
You laughed harder and caught yourself a moment later with a cough into your fist. "BJ, I've been meaning to ask; do you help chaperone for the school often?"
"Not really. Came this time cause Lyds was beggin' me to come along with her. Sweet girl, wants to spend as much time with her uncle as she can."
You smiled and looked back at the girls. Only for your blood to chill. "Claire!"
Your shout shocked the blonde scaling the bars. She lost her grip and fell back onto the ground. You scowl and march over to her. With your hands on your hips, you tapped your foot, waiting for her to get back to her feet.
"I told you not to climb the railing. What if you fell in?"
"But I can't see them!"
"If you won't listen to instructions, you can stand back next to me."
"Ew! Gross."
Claire wasn't happy in the slightest, and neither were you. You stood closer to the railing so Claire could still see. However, standing with her put a stop to your banter with BJ. You sighed and mindlessly checked over your clipboard for the last lesson.
A few minutes later you rattled off the educational part of the tour. It didn't last long, only five minutes, and once you finished reading, that was it. No more lessons. No more tour.
"Alright. That's it. We got a bit of time left before we need to head back to the buses."
"Teacher?" the tall brunette said. "Can we go by the gift shop? I want to get something for my mom."
You checked the map. It was on the way to the buses, so you didn't see any harm in perusing the shop for a while. You nodded, and the girls got excited. You showed BJ the location of the shop and guided the kids there.
After the twists and turns of the zoo pathways, and weaving through the growing number of patrons attending the zoo, your group makes it to the gift shop closest to the front gate.
You crossed into the shop where colorful souvenirs stacked high on every wall. Shirts in every color of the rainbow lined two of the wall, along with hats and tote bags. Stuffed animals of all sorts piled into the shelves of another part of the wall. Display stands covered most of the sales floor, packing in as much products as the building could hold. The girls scatted the instant you stepped inside, each drawn to different areas of the store. You rolled your eyes and strolled through the shop, interested to see if anything jumped out at you.
Claire and Mindy played with the plushies. The two pulled the smaller toys from the shelves and checked each one. As you passed by, Mindy asked you to check the price of the large giraffe toy on top of one of the floor displays. You found the tag of the toy nearly as tall as her and told her the steep price. She frowned and hugged the smaller giraffe toy in her arms tighter.
She went back to playing with Claire, and you moved on to check on the other girls. Bertha, Prudence and Gwen examined tumbled rocks that sat in a large bin. Prudence meticulously inspected rocks before deciding whether to place in the velvet pouch. Bertha and Gwen, in contrast, didn't scrutinize the rocks they put in their velvet pouches.
You passed them by with a smile and wondered to a corner of the shop stocked with candy. Odd that none of your girls browsed that section.
You shrugged to yourself and looked over the selection. Packages of chocolates, bags of gummies, jars filled with rock candy, and many, many more types of sweets crammed into that corner display. You grabbed one thing for yourself and notice peculiar lollipops next to it. The longer you looked at the lollipops, the more you thought it a good idea to buy one as well.
You grabbed one and took your selections up to the register to pay. The cashier rang up your items, and you handed them the payment as a booming voice cut through the air. You and most everyone in the shop turned to find a sunburnt man jostling two rowdy boys into the store. You sighed but turned back to finish your transaction. Not your circus, not your monkeys.
Once paid for, you take your candies, and head over to check on the last two members of the group. Lydia and her uncle compared boxes of solid white figurines in need of painting. You glanced over the various sets for sale, dinosaurs, birds, savanna animals, fish. Lydia held a box of the dinosaurs and looked it over with a slight frown.
"Can't decide which one you want?" You asked.
"I was hoping they'd have the one with bugs. I can never find that one."
You hummed and looked over the shelf. Birds, birds, fish, dinosaurs, birds, oh? You leaned closer and pulled out the front kits, handing them off to BJ. You grabbed the kit from way in the back and handed that one to Lydia.
"Deadly voo! I can't believe you found it!"
"They always hide the good stuff in the back."
"Thank you!" She rushed off to the register, clutching her prize. You chuckled and turned to BJ, still holding the stack of other kits. "Oh dear. Here." You helped him put the kits back on the shelf and freed up his arms. "Sorry about that."
"Nah, you're fine. Plus, you helped Lyds get that kit she's been wanting."
You breathed out a small laugh and gave him a half smile as you fiddled with something in your coat pocket. "Oh!" You pulled out the lollipop and handed it to him. "Thought you might like this since you said you were a 'connoisseur of bugs'."
He studied the lollipop, where the transparent pink candy encased a whole cricket. BJ grew a lopsided smile on his face and he put the candy in his shirt's chest pocket.
"Thanks babes! Save that for later."
"What do you think you're doing? Get out of the way, you brat!" The booming voice from earlier cut through the room again.
You spun around and find the man glaring down at Claire and Mindy. Hackles raised, you darted straight over to your students. You pulled the girls behind you and away from the upset man.
"Is there a problem?" you asked in a tone so sharp it could have cut diamonds.
"Yeah, these stupid girls of yours are in my way."
"Sir. I'm sure if you had asked politely they would have moved."
The man leaned to sneer at you. The faint stench of alcohol drifted on his breath. You glared back with your nostrils flared.
"Ow! Hey quit it!"
You break eye contact with the man to find the other girls getting pelted with rocks by the man's two rowdy boys.
"Stop that this instant!" you barked
"Hey, don't you go telling my boys what to do!"
"It's showtime!"
The lights flickered, casting the entire store in shadow for a moment. When the lights turned back on, the head of the giraffe toy had lowered to separate you and the man. The toy faced the man, and you swore it leaned in closer to him and said, "Hey, how's it going."
The toy's head swung at the man, decking him square in the face. The man reeled back and stumbled to the floor. You took that opportunity to remove yourself and grabbed the girls' shoulders to usher them to the other side of the store. You left them with Lydia up front by the cashier—on the phone with what sounded like security.
A deep scream bellowed out. Stuffed animals covered the man on the floor. He squirmed, but couldn't sit up, let alone get to his feet. You spared a disgusted glower at him before darting over to round up the other half of your group.
The boys chased your students into a corner and pelted the girls with their arms full of rocks. You grit your teeth and barked at the two to move. The boys turned. The younger of the two stuck out his tongue while the other said they didn't have to listen to you.
A second later, the boys screamed out and dropped the rocks. Beetles crawled up the two's arms and they both frantically flung their arms to get the bugs off them. The younger started wailing for his dad—still pinned to the floor by stuffed animals. The boys ran over to their father and you grabbed the girls to escort them to the rest of your group.
BJ stood with the other half of the group, laughing at the misfortune of the disaster family. You got the girls accounted for, triple checking you had everyone, and asked the cashier if you needed to stay. The poor kid looked like a deer in the headlights. They couldn't be more than a year out of high school. The cashier made another call and after which they said it was alright for your group to leave.
From there you lead the group back to the front gates and met up with the rest of the school. It wasn't long after that you and the girls boarded the bus. Once you sat, your head started swimming as the last bit of adrenaline drained out of you. It was maybe ten minutes into the drive home that you let out a deep breath and tried to collect your thoughts.
"Are you okay, teacher?"
You sat up and looked back to the row behind you. Lydia sat with her uncle, with her brows knitted in concern. Your mouth felt dry, and you swallowed to relieve the discomfort before answering.
"I've been better. But no one got seriously hurt, so there's that." You lolled your head onto the back of the bench and hissed out a small laugh through your teeth. "Got a crazy story to tell people now. First the bugs, then the jerk in the gift shop."
You heard movement in the seat behind you, followed by BJ's chuckle. "Crazy stories are the best kind!"
"They are after the fact, but between that jerk in the gift and the bug break out earlier, I am very much done with today. My leg still hurts from that wasp sting. If not for that little frog I would have gotten a lot more stings."
"I suppose the frog took a liking to you," Lydia said, "just like that donkey at the petting zoo."
You closed your eyes and sighed once more. BJ muttered something that you didn't bother to decipher. When he spoke clearly, he said, "Besides the minor mishaps, that was a fun trip though!"
You huffed out a dry laugh, but couldn't muster the energy to reply right away. When you did, you asked them to let you rest your eyes for the trip back. They agreed to, and you mumbled a thanks.
Regardless of whether you crossed over into a proper sleep, you managed a semblance of rest by the time the bus pulled up to the school. You sat up and rubbed at your eyes before glancing out the window. The students filed off the bus, followed by the other teachers. You got your things and left just behind the other teachers.
The crowd outside the bus thinned at the edges as students left the school grounds for home. You got to the edge near the building to watch over the students leaving. Among them you caught sight of Lydia and her uncle BJ. You bit your lip a tad worried you came across as rude earlier. An urge to correct that mistake overcame you, and you scurried over to catch them.
"Lydia, wait."
"Is something wrong, teacher?"
"No. Well, possibly. I wanted to apologize if I came across as rude on the bus. After that incident in the gift shop I felt rather drained."
"I understand. I didn't think you were rude."
You gave a soft smile to the girl. "I guess I should let you head home now. I'll see you in class, Lydia. Oh. And BJ, I... hope to see you around too."
"Ya really mean that, teach?"
"Please, you don't have to be so formal," you said with a laugh. You told him your name, and he repeated it to himself with a smile. "I enjoyed your company and wouldn't mind spending more time with you. Perhaps you could even show me around town."
He blinked at you a few times before the biggest grin split his face. "You got it, babes! BJ's Peaceful Pines Town Tours! Just say the word and I'll show you everything from here to the Neitherworld!"
"The Neitherworld? What?"
"Ah, uncle Beej, I think we should get going now. I need to get home for dinner."
"Oh. Right."
They waved you a farewell. You waved one back as you bit your lip and chuckled. Such a strange duo. Especially her uncle. But you've always liked the strange and unusual.

hi I'm the anon who sent in the thought about joshua's muscles a few days ago, could you do a prompt based off that ask with #71 and female reader thank you very much! 🥺
#71: “You like it that much, hm?”
the ask in question for those who want to know: joshua ask
Joshua had been going to the gym almost every day for a few months now, and you could definitely see a difference. He was much buffer than before, and his biceps looked as if they could bulge right out from under the skin. You weren't sure if he was aware, but it definitely had an effect on you.
One afternoon after his daily gym visit he came and wrapped his arms around you, and rested his head on your shoulder. You sucked in a breath at the feeling of his strong arms surrounding you, and you couldn't help but to reach up and grab ahold of one of his biceps and squeeze.
“They’ve gotten so much bigger since you started working out...I wonder how much stronger you are,” you spoke letting the muscle tense and intense while you squeezed. Unexpectedly, he lifted you up and walked you over to the wall, resting you against it while he held you up.
He smirked when he saw how much you were fawning over his newly built up muscles, and took the opportunity to snake one hand down and let his fingers run through your folds. When he realised how wet you had become just from his minor actions, he chuckled, before letting a finger sink into your pussy.
“You like it that much, hm? You like that I’ve been working out lots recently?” He grunted, letting his finger slowly pump into you and loving how your head rolled back. Your hands were perched on his shoulders, but you moved them down to his pecs and began to rub them, paying particular attention to his nipples.
A gasp left his lips when your thumbs ran over the buds, and he only thrust his finger into you harder, eventually adding a second and third until you were a whimpering mess in his arms. Your hands had snaked under his shirt and you were massaging his pecs, which only made his cock throb and he knew he needed to be inside of you.
He pulled his fingers out quickly, making you whine at the loss. You couldn't complain for long though, because as soon as he pulled out, you were tossed over his shoulder and he was walking toward the bedroom. You couldn't wait to see how hard he was able to press you into the mattress.
PROMPT GAME CLOSED

Whumptober2021 - October 4th - Taken Hostage | Pushed
Gift fic to @fidothefinch <3
Fandom: Nightwing, Batman - All Media Types
AO3
Warnings: Near death experience, hostage situations, implies Bruce as a shitty dad but I don't go into detail on it.
---
If there’s anything in the world that Dick hates more than being restrained, it’s being held hostage. Especially if he’s being held hostage as a threat against Bruce or Batman. One thing they don’t tell you in the foster system is that if you’re adopted by a rich and famous to the Kardashian level man, is that you’re often the target of criminals who think snatching a kid on their way home from school is a surefire way to make a million bucks. It’s no better in the vigilante business either, because often any hero in Gotham is only seen as a stepping stool to getting to Batman.
Honestly, at this point Dick’s used to it. It doesn’t mean he enjoys it, though. Not so much because of the initial kidnapping part, but because he’s worked hard to become his own person, his own man with his own life. He moved to Blüdhaven to be anything other than the son of Bruce Wayne; to be his own hero that villains learn to fear. And then the second he sets foot back in Gotham, for whatever reason, suddenly it’s all about the reclusive eldest Wayne child returning home! Suddenly, when villains see him at night, it isn’t “Oh shit, it’s Nightwing!”, it’s “Shit, it’s a Sidekick! Where’s the Bat?!”
Anyway, long story short, Dick came back to Gotham for one weekend to visit family, and now he’s dressed as Nightwing, standing on a roof with duct-tape keeping his wrists together behind his back and a knife to his throat belonging to a shady businessman who’s finally caught the attention of Gotham’s heroes.
And it’s sorta pathetic how Dick ended up in this situation. It wasn’t like this was going to be a particularly difficult mission. Just sneak into the building, grab the evidence he needed to get this bastard behind bars, and then get out. Unfortunately, someone tipped the man off without Bruce knowing about it. When he went into the main office, he was met with a very strong guard hiding behind the doors, and after a hefty blow to the head and a few concerning minutes of blacking out, Dick opened his eyes—thankfully still masked—to find himself kneeling on the rough cement of a skyscraper’s roof, completely stripped of any of his useful tools. He has a small knife in one of his gauntlets, but it’s not exactly in an easy to reach position. It would take time to grab at it, and that’s not counting the high probability he’ll be spotted by Jerome McCoy--Gotham’s latest shady businessman--or any of his goons.
Besides, Tim is already up here listening to their demands to get Batman up here or Dick dies. It shouldn’t be long before Bruce gets here and kicks his ass. That’s not even accounting for the facts that Jason, Steph, Duke, Dami, and Cass are all in town.
These idiots have no clue how close they are with dealing with close to every single bat if something bad happens to Dick tonight.
And everything was going fine until Tim suddenly stopped mid sentence in reminding McCoy that Batman was on his way and brought his hand to his communicator in his ear. When Tim paled ever so slightly, Dick knew something had gone exactly NOT according to plan.
“What is it?!” McCoy demands, pressing the knife against Dick’s neck with worrying pressure. Dick leans his head back slightly to lessen the risk of his neck being cut and meets Tim in the eyes through their masks.
Tim swallows. “Batman is being held up-”
Dick resists sighing in both disappointment and lack-of-surprise as McCoy practically explodes.
“What?!
“Only for a few hours,” Tim rushes to explain. He’s lifted his hands in a placid manner and softened his voice, which can’t be good. “He’s… met an unexpected complication along the way that he cannot ignore. Please, just tell me what you want, and I can take my partner and be out of-”
“I don’t have a few hours,” McCoy practically screeches. “Either Batman makes it his priority to get here, or Nightwing gets it!” to make a point, McCoy lifts the knife from Dick’s neck and waves it in front of him. Dick slides his eyes over to the other goons on the roof; there’s only a few. Maybe… if Dick plays his cards right… “That was the deal!”
“I understand-”
“Tell Batman to get here now, or Nightwing’s blood is on his hands!”
“He’s busy- I can’t just-”
Dick slams his body back, pointing his elbow the furthest he can with the way his arms are bound and jamming it into McCoy’s stomach. McCoy lets out a startled, breathless gasp as Dick uses his surprise to escape from his grasp and jump to his feet.
“’Wing!” Tim yells at the same time McCoy wheezes “Get that fucker!”
Dick has just a second to notice Tim’s shock at Dick’s sudden attack before Dick’s having to defend himself with his hands literally tied behind his back. Sorry, kid, Dick thinks, ducking around a pair of beefy arms, but we’re out of options.
It was going well until it wasn’t. Tim was even about to step in. However, while waking up from his lovely whack to the head, Dick failed to assess just where he was on the roof.
All it took was for the back of his heel to tough nothing but air for his heart to jump to his throat. Instinctively, he tried to wave his arms to catch his balance, but was quickly reminded of his predicament when the tape tugged against his wrists. For a moment, pure panic filled his entire body, here, wobbling backwards off the edge of a roof dozens of stories above the ground. He could feel his heart pound, hands shake, breath catch, hair rustle in the wind, but he couldn’t do a thing to stop himself from falling backwards. He’s pretty sure he hears Tim scream his codename, but he’s not totally focused on anything other than his pending doom right now-
A heavy hand wraps around his upper-bicep, stopping his almost-promised journey to pancake town. Everything is silent on the roof for a solid moment, as Dick practically hangs over the ledge of the roof with his feet just barely still on solid ground, a goon holding him juuuuuust enough to make sure he doesn’t fall. Tim looks even paler than before, looking like he really did watch Dick go over the edge. McCoy looks a constipating mixture of smug and outraged while the other goons stand nearby like useless props.
Then, McCoy speaks with anger as heavy and level as stone. “Tell Batman I want him here in ten minutes.”
Tim meets Dick’s eyes, and Dick sees everything that he needs to. Whatever is holding Bruce up, it’s more important than Dick, and Tim knows it’s useless to even try.
“Please,” Tim says, voice wobbly. He’s a detective. He knows what’s about to happen. “Just give us more time-”
McCoy snaps a finger, and that’s that.
The hand on his arm pushes Dick away and opens it’s grasp. It doesn’t matter anymore that Dick had his feet on the roof, because the rest of his body is falling.
Falling.
Dick’s completely off the roof in a blink of an eye and he’s falling.
The air is rushing past his ears and through his hair, so loud he can barely think. That’s if he’s thinking at all, as story after story passes him by. He’s falling, and for the first time in a long time, he’s afraid of falling, because this time there’s nothing he can do to stop it. He doesn’t have any tools… he doesn’t even have his hands, nor enough time to even try and get his hands free. He’s falling, rushing to the ground. He can already see in vivid detail what his body will look like when it hits the pavement.
He’s falling. He’s standing at the top of a beam, watching his mama and papa fall. He’s falling. He’s screaming as the sound of their bodies landing and snapping reaches his ears. He’s falling and he’s going to die in the most Grayson way possible.
He’s going to die the same way his parents did, a way that he’s worked hard to not be afraid of ever since he first moved in with Bruce, but was always secretly terrified.
He closes his eyes. He doesn’t want to watch. He’s afraid, and Tim will watch from above and blame himself and he never wanted any of his siblings to blame themselves for his death like how he blamed himself for his parent’s for decades and-
And the wind is knocked out of him, but not from his body slamming on the ground. A strong arm wraps painfully around his stomach, and suddenly the world turns sideways and his eyes shoot open in shock.
“Fuck,” Jason grunts, holding Dick with one arm and the other wrapped tightly in a grappling line. “Fucking hell.”
And Dick… doesn’t know what to do. He feels muted, like a YouTube video playing at 144p and buffering still. The adrenaline is pumping so loudly through his entire body that the fact that Jason’s caught him doesn’t register until Jason’s landing roughly on the ground and lowering Dick to the asphalt.
“Started heading over the second that bastard said he wasn’t coming,” Jason explains. Dick nods numbly, his eyes locked on the oil covered road below him, his mind still trying to process. “Said he ran into some bastard working for Two-Face holding some rich family hostage. Said we could handle it. I can’t believe I got here just in time. Fucking fuck-face fucker.”
There’s a splash of two feet landing on the permanently puddled street beside them, and Dick can hardly contain his flinching at the sound, but thankfully Jason doesn’t notice. He just stands up and faces where Tim has landed quite suddenly from where he must have grappled down from the roof. Dick continues to look at the ground, wringing his knitting together in front of him. He… hasn’t noticed Jason undid the bindings.
“What happened to McCoy?” Jason demands, and Tim takes a gasping breath and shakes his head.
“They ran into the building while I… jumped after N.”
Jason growls, taking a step forward but Tim stops him. “Orphan said she’ll handle it, she sounded pissed.”
Jason backs off, but anger still curls in his stomach like an old friend. His fists clench to his side. “Once I see B, I’m gonna punch his teeth up to his brain.”
And it must be proof of how shaken Tim is, because he doesn’t argue.
Then, like a pin hitting tile, a small sound catches Jason’s ears. He looks down to where Dick is still sitting in the grime of Gotham’s street. His heart sinks to his gut.
“N?” he asks, and Dick doesn’t respond. “Nightwing, you’re… crying.”
That directs Tim’s attention down where tears are certainly streaming down Dick’s cheeks from under his mask. His lips are wobbling, and the second Jason kneels down to put his hand on Dick’s shoulder, a wounded sound escapes his lips.
“Dick?” Jason asks, his voice sounding shocked and unsure.
Dick looks up at Tim, looking one breath of the wind from falling apart. “You jumped after me?” His voice is small and brittle. When Tim nods slowly, Dick whimpers, dropping his head into his hands and letting out a sob. “You almost watched me die,” is all he says before he finally breaks down into mournful cries.
Jason looks up from where Dick’s now shaking and gasping into his hands and meets Tim’s eyes. Neither of them… has ever seen Dick get like this before. It feels wrong, like something in the world has shattered and can never be replaced.
“Lets… get him home,” Jason says, breaking the silence.
“Yeah,” is all Tim can smartly bring to his lips while Jason scoops Dick into his arms and stands up.
Dick’s so out of it with his sobbing that he hardly reacts, just curls against Jason and continues to cry.
“You know,” Jason says quietly, “the scariest way to die, for me, is to overdose.”
And Tim understands.
“I… see.”
Jason nods, swallowing hard. “Yeah. So let’s just call it a night, get him some Alfred cookies, and just… let him take this at his own pace, okay?”
Tim nods, knowing that after years of Dick always going out of his way to help them with their trauma, their issues, and never asking for anything in return… it’s now their turn to return the favor. Dick looks so much smaller than Tim swears he’s ever seen him, curled up in Jason’s arms, trembling and sobbing. He silently promises to himself that he will do whatever it takes to make sure Dick gets through this, just like what he’d do for them, always. And Tim’s positive the rest of Dick’s siblings will do the same.

Civilian: Prohero!Deku x Reader
I know, revolutionary, a fic that I didn’t name after a song. I did have to stop myself from naming it after Dress by Taylor Swift though because that song sort of fits this story PERFECTLY. Anyway, this was a request from the lovely @thetruthunspoken, and for some reason Tumblr won’t let me post their submission on desktop but this is inspired by a TikTok from Deku cosplayer @/fourmonthsold. It should be right above this post on my blog!
Warnings: None. Reader flirts with Hawks who is like, 7 years older I guess??? Everybody is an adult though.
You loved being Izuku’s friend-date to things. It had started out as a fun thing when you were kids. You had both complained about how nobody would want to invite you to school dances and had come to the conclusion that it was better to just go together. You had suggested it, since Izuku was too shy to ask any of the 1-A girls at the time and you weren’t getting asked by any of the gen-ed guys. No pressure to get a date if you were just going with your best friend.
Over the years though, the reasons had changed and so had the parties. Now you appeared with #1 hero Deku to keep the thirsty girls off his back, and the parties were far bigger and more lavish. Not that you were complaining, since Deku provided your wardrobe. There was really only one downside.
You had made the fatal mistake of falling in love with your best friend, and he wouldn’t even be seen with you in front of paparazzi. You were a great buffer for all of the women who had noticed how handsome he was, but that was all you were to him anymore. Part of you wanted to scream that you had seen him first, had noticed how perfect he was long before all the muscles and heroic stunts, but you knew that would be pointless. You had missed your chance a long time ago, if you had ever had one.
Even so, tonight you had pulled out all the stops. Usually, Izuku had some kind of request for the dress depending on the event, but this time he had just thrown some money at you and told you to go at it, and go at it you did. Your long red dress was backless, a slit up the side racing up to your hip to show off your legs. Even if he wasn’t going to appreciate it you might find another hero to get with. You heard the winged hero, Hawks, was going to be here tonight and he was notoriously popular with the ladies. Maybe out of your league, but not in this dress.
When Izuku picked you up, you saw his eyes go wide.
“Wow…you look great. I mean, you always do of course, but this is something special. Did I miss something?”
You laughed a little bit.
“Nope. Just felt like dressing up.” You shrugged.
Izuku didn’t ask any more questions, despite being suspiciously quiet on the way to the party. When you got there you scanned the room, trying to see if the rumors were true. Sure enough, Hawks was over by the bar.
“I’m going to go get a drink,” you told Izuku, eyes never leaving your target.
You leaned your elbows against the bar, conveniently near the pro-hero you had your eye on. You ordered a drink for yourself, knowing Izuku probably wouldn’t want anything this early in the night. It always took him a minute to loosen up.
“Now what’s a beautiful young lady like you doing here all alone?”
You smirked to yourself before turning and resting your hip against the bar.
“Just doing some bird watching.” You shrugged.
“Is that so? Aren’t I a little old for you?”
You leaned in teasingly. “If you were, we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now. Don’t worry. I’m a big girl.”
“I can see that. You know, if you’re not busy later-”
“She is.” A familiar voice spoke as an even more familiar, scarred hand wrapped possessively around your waist.
“Oh, Deku, this one is yours? That makes sense. I thought I’d seen her around before. Your…best friend, right?”
“That’s me.” You kept your confident smile in place, despite the racing of your heart at Izuku’s warm touch.
“So, you guys aren’t an item?” Hawks verified.
“Nope. Never have been.” You didn’t have the heart to say you never would be.
“So why come to these?” Hawks seemed genuinely curious.
“The dresses. He buys me a new one every time he wants something. It’s almost a shame we aren’t a couple. I’d probably own more of these gorgeous dresses.” You sighed theatrically, looking back at Izuku. “If only you were mine.”
Izuku frowned slightly but seemed to shake off whatever was upsetting him with an easy smile.
“Baby, I’m a hero. I can’t be your boyfriend.”
You felt a spark of annoyance at this newest excuse. I mean, that was just insulting. He was really going to use his job as an excuse not to date you?
You decided to put the power of your dress and the newfound confidence that came with it to use. You leaned back into his chest, placing a well-manicured hand along his face to tilt his head closer to yours. Anyone watching might have confused you for lovers.
“I know, I know. You’re the #1 now. Can’t be my boyfriend. You’re too busy being a big strong hero. Just like All Might.”
Izuku laughed nervously, sounding a little breathless. Maybe you had laid it on a little too thick.
“Maybe I could be, but I don’t know if I should be.”
You frowned, turning to face him better in your confusion.
“What is that supposed to mean?” It was a genuine question, all of the anger sapped out of you.
“Well, it’s dangerous being a hero. I probably shouldn’t date anyone until I retire. Actually, I always kind of accepted I wouldn’t be able to have a love life as a hero. Anyone who gets close is a target for villains. It’s why I always try to keep the paparazzi off of you. I don’t know what I’d do if you got hurt.”
“Wait…that’s why you’re never seen with me?”
Hawks found somewhere else to be just then, conveniently enough. You heard him get out of his seat behind, leaving you to your secluded little part of the bar. No doubt he decided not to be involved in whatever argument was about to go down.
“Yeah. I thought you knew.” Izuku frowned.
“No.” You stared up at him, mouth open in shock. “I always thought you were ashamed of me.”
“What?” Izuku grabbed your arms, pulling you closer so you could look into his bright green eyes as he spoke his next words. “I have never been ashamed of you. Ever. I’m so sorry I ever made you feel like that. I had no idea.”
He ran a hand through his hair, letting go of you to pace in place. He began mumbling under his breath, too fast for you to understand what he was saying. Meanwhile, you felt shocked tears well in your eyes, overwhelmed at this sudden discovery and the emotions pooling in your chest.
“All of these years I’ve been in love with you, thinking you just kept me around to keep girls at parties off your back.”
Izuku stopped dead at that, whirling around to face you.
“You’re-”
You clapped a hand over your mouth, horrified that he had heard you.
“Forget I said anything. I didn’t mean to tell you that. I’m so sorry Izuku. I don’t know what your reasons for keeping me around are, but it’s honestly not my place to ask. You were always very clear that we were only ever friends, and whatever I feel isn’t your responsibility.”
“Of course it is! You haven’t been just my friend for years! I’ve loved you since our third year. I just never thought you wanted me back, and when I became a hero I didn’t think you’d want to accept the danger of that kind of relationship. But…I was too selfish to let you go, and I’m sorry for any pain I caused you.”
“You love me?” The only words you really heard, you repeated them breathlessly.
“Yes.”
Throwing caution to the wind, you grabbed Izuku’s tie and pulled him down to your level, planting a reckless kiss on his mouth. He tasted warm and faintly spicy, like cinnamon. The smell of his cologne enveloped you as you breathed him in briefly before pulling away.
“We can talk about your stupid belief that I wouldn’t want to date you because your job is dangerous later. I’ll make a PowerPoint to remind you that I wanted to be a hero too, and just because I wasn’t accepted into the hero course doesn’t mean I didn’t learn how to fight. But right now? Right now, I have other things in mind for you, me and this dress.”
Izuku blinked before looking you up and down. “I am so glad I bought you that dress.”
 Bonus:
“I told you I could get them together.”
Miruko rolled her eyes at the winged hero. “If you’re about to credit yourself for that, I will hurt you.”
“All I had to do was pretend to flirt with the little birdie, and her jealous boyfriend came running over. Look at them now!” Hawks was entirely too smug.
“Whatever you say, Keigo.”
