ok i’m still too scared to put this up as an actual wip, but my friend’s reply to my question about thoma and culture made me think… and i had this sort of idea. tw for more… strict ways of parenting. it is very rough around the edges, but one scene i can imagine:

thoma is not used to being raised in a different culture where punishments are the norm, and although he knows that the kamisatos love him, he can’t wrap his head around their belief in punishments. it’s not like the kamisato siblings are spared from it either.

thoma walks around the street. he knows he will be punished for being late so best to rush home, but he doesn’t want to go home since he knows he’ll be punished. there’s also this conflict in him because he knows he should return—he does owe them something.

during this walk as he struggles to decide what to do, he notices a child around his age. you are sitting outside the house, knees tucked in and head bowed down. odd. the house behind you bursts with laughter and there’s a faint scent of dinner.

thoma approaches you, his mondstadt teachings kicking in, worry in his eyes.

“what are you doing out here?”

you straighten your back and narrow your eyes at him, then shake your head and points for him to walk away.

“why?” he asks again, plopping down beside you. he notices the way you eye his bag of groceries plus the slight drool. fumbling through items, he takes out a sweet—it was meant for him to eat after his punishment.

you push it away like it’s poison. when the door bursts open, you push him down—eyes filled with warning—and stand with hands behind your back, head lowered with shame.

“time’s up,” a lady who seems to be your mother says. she briefly glances at thoma but spared no thought or concern for him. “you know what to do next,” she adds while returning her attention to you.

“do as i’m told,” you mumble, barely audible for thoma to hear.

“i can’t hear you,” your mum enunciates, hands on her hips.

“do the dishes, wash the sink, clean the tables.” you sound like one of the guards loitering the gates of the kamisato estate.

the lady kneels and opens her arms. you bury yourself in her embrace reminiscent of the way he does to his foster parents after his punishments, except he would be tear-streaked and lightly scolded for being a crybaby.

thoma decides to return. when he does, his foster parents bombard him with questions. why did it take so long for him to return with the groceries? they were worried sick, but also he wasn’t playing around the streets again? was he? he had to learn to complete a duty to it’s fruition, not let himself be distracted.

thoma then tells he helped someone on the streets, hence he took a while.

they give brief compliments. thoma recounts the warm touch of his mum when she praised him—now miles away.

mr and ms kamisato are quick to hand him the next tasks, and even quicker to nag on punctuality.

#with irony.#/#ok so the thing here is i hvnt really done my research #and i hvnt solidified what the actual theme or concept this story will explore #but i just know i want to find some kind of tension between stricter parenting and more carefree parenting #the idea that the child is the future of the family vs the idea that the child is an individual #that sort of thing. i think mondstadt isn’t really spared of the parenting where the child is seen as the family’s future #i mean look at j*an yk #but their culture is definitely more relaxed and i had the vibes from in*zuma that they probably are pretty traditional and strixt #the whole punishments pride and dignity #tbh. i had another version where reader was insistent they be punished for their wrongs and would say outwardly #which also is the introduction or what i hope to be the seed at which th*ma grows the thought he expresses in his voicelines #but then i figured i could show it instead. but i’m not sure if it’s showed proper.
