i said i won't liveblog and i mean it but i do have to say a few things though about revisiting pla after having finally familiarized myself with the original media-
•laventon’s theme gives me hearthome city theme vibes. i think the opening rhythm is the same. it's weird for that to be his theme out of anything but my musically trained ear does not lie to me
•i’m kind of amazed someone else had to point out to me how the obsidian fieldlands/prelude beach cutscene theme is twinleaf town with an altered rhythm. i mean granted i didn’t pay that much attention to twinleaf town but like the obsidian fieldlands theme is one of my favorite songs i should have been listening close for it
•edit- i think obsidian fieldlands also references sandgem town a tiny bit? possibly canalave city? it's small enough to be coincidental but it would make sense geographically
•tons of name references. canala avenue. floaro gardens. sandgem flats. veilstone cape. spring path. wayward cave. celestica ruins. solaceon ruins. etc
•so at what point in time did cyllene/her descendants overthrow kamado/his descendants in the galaxy team’s rankings. lol
•galaxy hall theme is rowan’s lab theme! seriously uh. when did the rift between these families start
•i noticed right away while playing platinum… but the celestica flute tone, azure flute tone, and galaxy team rank-up jingle all reference the music from the opening movie for dppt! it was like overwhelming to get hit with all those at once for me when booting up my ds lemme tell you
other random commentary:
•volo having a togepi really is pretty ridiculous. just goes to show the kinda guy he is. totally not special at all right. your descendant gave me one of those and i named it after you boy. i'm going to abuse volo this run btw. the man not the baby egg i mean
•amazing how when i choose the male protagonist suddenly i get the super lucky rare female starter (it was cyndaquil btw). granted i also got the rare female gift eevee from bebe while playing as the female protag in platinum but like i think to get that sort of luck with your starter is something especially meaningful. so i'm going to do the #malefeminist run. my challenge is to only use female mons

Okay, my brain refuses to think about anything other than Murderbot, so I looked at every use of the word "friend[s]" in TMBD and... created some pie charts. Normal human activities.
Some Thoughts™ I had while putting this together (under the cut):
In All Systems Red, Murderbot notes that the PresAux crew are all close friends (twice! and goes on to explain their internal relationships which I think is very cute). This is pretty much the only use of 'friends' in ASR, except for when Murderbot says that SecUnits can't be friends with each other.
It seems that this may be one of the first times Murderbot has ever really been around a group of friends before? Murderbot notes that this is not the norm for its contracts and admits that the fact that they are all friends and the way they interact with each other make it actually enjoy that contract (before!!!! the hostile attack, so it already enjoys this contract before they start seeing it as a person etc ghghhhh). [Inference: Friendship seems enjoyable.]
The first character that calls Murderbot its friend is ART in Artificial Condition. Murderbot immediately refutes this (and then goes on to call ART its friend to its clients for the rest of the book). [Inference: Maybe ART is Murderbot's friend. And maybe that is... agreeable]
Rogue Protocol has more than twice as many instances of the word 'friend' as any of the other novellas. Why? Miki. Friendship and its implications for non-humans are a central theme because Miki is friends with everyone. Murderbot initially scoffs at the notion that Miki and Miki's humans are friends. At the end of the book, after witnessing how desperately Don Abene tried to stop Miki from trying to save them, and her grief after its death, Murderbot has to admit that she had in fact been Miki's friend. [Inference: Humans can be friends with bots and can sincerely care about them]
In Exit Strategy, Murderbot tentatively uses the word "friends" for its humans for the first time (several times actually). It questions whether it can actually call them its friends or not and later realizes that it had been afraid what admitting that the humans are its friends would do to it. At the end of the book, Mensah tells Murderbot the PresAux crew are its friends, which is the first time a human has directly said that to it (at least on-page). [Inference: Humans can and want to be Murderbot's friends]
In Network Effect, Murderbot seems to be more habituated to the word 'friend', confidently calling ART and Ratthi its friends, like it is no longer just trying the concept on unsure if it fits. There are many instances in which other characters refer to MB as ART's friend or the other way around and Murderbot's humans refer to Murderbot as their friend several times. Generally, there seems to be less hesitancy, because yes, all of them are Murderbot's friends, why wouldn't they be. [Inference: SecUnits can have friends. This SecUnit has friends. They care about it a lot.]
Conclusion: The Murderbot Diaries tell the story of a construct that does not seem to consider the possibility of friendship for itself and is fine with that - until it accidentally starts caring a little too much and suddenly more and more people annex it as a friend (ew) to the point where it can no longer deny that this is happening and has to begrudgingly admit that yes, it has friends now and maybe that is actually not a bad thing.

I was thinking about the fact that it's very funny that my parents had more problems with me being atheist than with me being queer.
Like:

Concept: Duke’s pupils glow white when he uses his powers. White rather than gold matches his bat symbol and fits that he’s about light itself, not just sunlight. The pupil glowing represents how his retina, the part which the pupil opens to and actually responds to and absorbs light, would probably be the part affected by his metahuman power to absorb light in superhuman ways; is a somewhat more subtle power indicator than glowing irises; avoids giving yet another black character/PoC unnaturally non-brown eyes, even temporarily; and tell me circles of bright white inside dark brown irises isn’t an immensely cool image. Light in the darkness. Like the classic solid white eyes in Batman’s cowl in some art styles.
#and this might be a stretch but gnomon’s face on his helmet has a big white circle in the middle#so it might kinda reference that ‘cause gnonom is where his powers come from#but with gnonom that power and superhuman state of being has completely overridden his human face#i’m a duke power purist#no ‘touch of ishmael’ in my version of canon thanks#super light PERCEPTION is a really cool and versatile take on light powers#i’ve never seen in any other character at least not as a main/only power#it’s the kind of ability you need to be clever and thoughtful to use well#and being non-physical means it can’t detract from his own physical strength and skill#adding the more common and generic manipulation of external light cheapened it for me#and why add darkness powers?! duke is thematically ALL ABOUT light!#darkness makes no sense and corrupts that thematic cohesiveness!#we have enough dark-related batfamily members#let me have my SUNSHINE BOY#i think seeing every wavelength of light; the ‘ghosts’ of past and future light; x-ray vision; and microscopic and telescopic vision#are enough powers for a vigilante with loads of other skills and talents that deserve weight and recognition too#duke thomas#the signal#dc signal#batfamily#batfam#dc comics#dc

Barry Sonnenfeld just went too hard with the 1991 Addams Family movie, why does anyone else even try
#the addams family#Wednesday#Netflix#the new show isn’t awful but everything feels stilted and crisp and too generic teen drama plot#the acting and directing doesn’t vibe for me#maybe it gets better but I’m very on the fence neutral like the delivery and all is off#the monster was wacked and it’s going to date itself with modern references to things like tiktok#I hate when they mention apps hate it#I’m willing to accept being no longer a teen I am no longer the target audience#and my blatant loathing of any modern thing trying too hard to be hip with modern teens doesn’t help#but also the general plotline is so painfully the plot of like every other ya book or show and I’m tired of the outcast and 100 bullies#and hate of family and everyone being mean it’s just ugh#I literally read a book last month with the exact plot down to bubblegum roommate and all#it had a few moments so far just ehhh#it’s no 1991 movie 😭 my beloved#but don’t take my word yet maybe it improves!

sometimes i do not understand people's writing/reading pet peeves saw someone say recently you shouldn't use words that cannot literally describe speech as dialogue tags. as in things like "she laughed" or "he breathed". sorry but if you cannot understand the tone of voice intended to be conveyed by "he breathed" as a dialogue tag and ONLY understand it as wheezing in and out while they speak... skill issue
#good idea generator#to be honest i kind of find that kind of thing insulting#like as a reader i wouldnt be able to understand even the most basic figurative language?#i obviously know that 'breathed' is referring to things like tone or volume#just like i also obviously know that 'laughed' is usually conveying that they said it. and then laughed#or perhaps said it through a laugh or with good humor or any number of other things conveyed through context#and even if it didn't. i feel like dialogue tags like that are NOT disruptive??#i barely even register them & this person was acting like it ruined their whole vibe#also to some extent 'laughed' specifically is not always describing speech#it's more analogous structure wise to saying 'she sipped her coffee' after a line of dialogue#its not describing the speech its describing an accompanying or proceeding action to identify the speaker#do you know what i mean?? like HOW is that unclear. HOW are you interpreting this as laughing every single word

I think I deserve a medal for not engaging in Moffat discourse in the year of our Lord 2023
#saw someone claim the rache/rachel joke in sherlock was a sign the writers thought they were better than the source material#as if that joke isn't a sign of how much they love the source material#you only make references to details like that if you know the details#saying that 'rache' is a dumb answer is poking fun not at the original story but at the audience#if they've read the original they might think they know what the clue means#but sherlock holmes has to be smarter than the audience so in this version the opposite answer has to be true to maintain that surprise#(also i don't think anyone wanted the episode to veer into a novella-length flashback about mormons)#in general i remain baffled every time someone tries to claim moffat thinks himself a genius without flaws#when the biggest weaknesses in his writing come from his hyperawareness of his flaws#and his deep fear that the audience will get bored and change the channel#you can accuse sherlock of many flaws (and i do) but you cannot claim that the creators don't love the source material#this started because two fanboys talked about how much they love the stories#they are playing with the stories#having fun the way that fans do#loving the source material enough to poke fun and make inside jokes#and that deserves respect no matter how one may disagree with their particular fannish interpretation

So I'm building a personal website to move all my fandom stuff to and I'm curious, since it's been a long time since this sort of thing was especially common:
For the one page option there would be navigation links at the top and bottom and between chapters, and for the separate pages option there would of course be links between pages as appropriate.
I'm leaning towards the second option, personally. More busywork on my end but overall more readable and it's probably worth it.
#by 'busywork' i mean im going to have to open up every page separately and edit the links#ive very angrily thrown in the towel with attempting to code this myself and am currently using a website builder for large chunks of it#especially the responsive bits which i just cant find dependable information about anywhere#and to be entirely honest i never did get responsive web design to work when i studied this in school either#i am coding most of it myself but i have quite shamelessly used a web tool to generate a responsive menu#and am currently trying to pick out the code that references that specifically#auto generated html is a bit dense and hard to get through#and not ideal for screen readers as it generates junk data#or did when i studied all this in school anyway#which is why i rather disapprove of all those 'drag and drop' website builders a la squarespace#but its probably fine
