To everyone who thinks that Asgore can dodge like Sans
This idea is based on something Undyne says to you on her date.
Tumblr media
It never says that Asgore dodged Undyne's hits. She just said she couldn't land a single blow. This could mean any number of things:
Asgore wasn't moving at all. Undyne simply missed her attacks. Undyne was young and hot-headed and no experience, so this is very possible.
Asgore's DEF was too high for her to hit. In Undertale, your attack can "miss" a monster even if they clearly don't dodge and you hit your attack. When a monster's defence exceeds your attack too much, your attack does no damage and is labelled a miss. You can see this in the first Mettaton fight. Asgore could've just been that much stronger than child Undyne.
Asgore blocked the attacks. Undyne battles in a way that forces the opponent to stay still and attempt to block attacks. Asgore could have parried all of them with his trident.
And EVEN if he did in fact dodge Undyne's attacks, it doesn't necessarily mean he can dodge your attacks.
Monsters use magic offensively by launching projectiles in patterns. There's a difference between magical attacks and physical attacks. One fires moving projectiles that the target tries to avoid, the other just hits. Sans is not traditionally dodging, moving to avoid an incoming hit. He is fundamentally BREAKING THE RULES, which is what his entire fight is all about.
Now, I'm not claiming that Asgore definitely can't dodge. He may very well be able to, but I often see people claiming this is definitely canon when it's much more ambiguous.

Theory: Papyrus's battle body
So, everyone should know about 'Papyrus's battle body', it's something I've been pointing aggressively at for years to point out that his brother is a liar-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Contradicting what he says, during the hang out, Papyrus specifies that he wears his special clothes underneath his 'REGULAR CLOTHES'.
Tumblr media
Then the interview came out and it turns out I was wrong.. Papyrus's battle body is indeed....
Tumblr media
...
....HANG ON A SECOND.
What the interview confirms is that Papyrus does indeed have a battle body, but what's also been confirmed is that it's not his clothes. But there's also an important question to factor in: Does what his brother say, have any merit? Was this 'battle body' made a few weeks ago for a party?
I've mentioned this before but it's very important for this theory, there's a post on the Undertale tumblr that relates to this:
Tumblr media
"not everyone is as tough as my brother." - immediately starts talking about Shyren for some reason. "they say those without blame should cast the first stone." (Is this implying something happened to Papyrus that someone could be blamed for?)
Anyway, Shyren's form in battle is made of 2 different monsters, the body is 'Shyren's agent'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Papyrus loses his head when killed, and his body dusts, then his head. They both have different dust patterns.
Tumblr media
"Papyrus's body and head have different dust patterns because it's his battle body but not his battle head" - @fluo-skeletons
If I can make an assumption from the Undertale changelog, dust patterns are changed for each individual monster. There was some extensive research done before I found this, including checking dust pattern related to monster size, HP, EXP, G, and none of them seemed to line up.. Was this patch note intentional for these connections to be made?
Tumblr media
(Image cropped and modified for ease of reading, this is on the fandom wiki)
What I'm saying is that Papyrus's entire body was made, and he didn't always look how we see him in the game. But this leads to one of the biggest mysteries of Papyrus, what or who is he?
There's not a character that's canonically been shattered to pieces that speaks just like he does, there is never any implication he can read wingdings either so ignore that
He can walk/run through the air, he acknowledges things that implies he knows he's in a game, and how games themselves function. He's implied the ability to use a save file, he can use blasters, his bedroom is silent. It's implied he's been inside the true lab, or at least Alphys's lab. He's implied that he can see from your perspective (NOT FRISK'S, YOURS.), the annoying dog annoys him the most, he can change game UI and take over the whole screen.
Tumblr media
Who else has done that?

An odd connection between Undyne the Undying and genocide Chara
There is something slightly intriguing about Undyne's genocide speech, before she transforms.
Some of the things it says seem... far too accurate compared to the things that Undyne is supposed to be able to know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While it is not that crazy to think that Undyne would imagine the human would be willing to bring harm to humanity as well, something about the way she says it already feels slightly off.
Undyne speaks as if they would all be killed, although there are far too many humans & monsters for the human to be able to kill everyone by themself individually, even if given the rest of their life to do so.
But most importantly, she says that they would all be killed in an instant. That somehow, all of humans and monsters would be destroyed at once if the human ever got past her. Not in a slow murderous grind like what they had been doing thus far, but rather in a single moment of destruction that would bring an end to the whole world at once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She seems quite certain about all this, too.
Tumblr media
While one could put all of this on her love for anime and/or dramatic speeches, that doesn't really seem to be all there is to it because, as little sense as this should make, she's actually completely right about everything she just said !
Firstly, the way Chara speaks at the end of the route fits a little too well with Undyne's few first lines about the human achieving absolute destruction.
Tumblr media
But most of all, Chara does eventually destroy the world in a single blow. Bringing upon the end of humans and surviving monsters alike in an instant, just as Undyne had suggested.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even this line could be seen as a kind of reference if you stretch it a little...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing is, from an in-world perspective, there is no simply no way that Undyne could have been talking to Chara here or that she would have known what was going to happen.
Unlike Sans, who did actually have some information about an incoming timeline erasure, she simply didn't know that much about the situation and shouldn't have been able to say all of that with any sort of certainty.
Yet her guess was just far too accurate and confident to be a coincidence... Right ?
Well, one might consider it might be possible for it to be just some kind of foreshadowing without real meaning. For instance, other monsters also make comments on a certain lack of humanity in genocide.
But what makes this even more interesting and unique is that the references go both ways !
Once the world is destroyed, just as Undyne had said, whilst waiting for Chara, we can hear the wind howling over a black screen.
Tumblr media
This wouldn't be much of a detail to be concerned about if it wasn't for the fact that :
Tumblr media
This noise is also exactly what the narrator (also heavily theorised to be Chara !), describes when fighting, well, Undyne the undying herself.
It seems like this strangely accurate reference to the ending of the route gets sent right back towards Undyne as soon as it reveals itself to have been true.
Whilst Sans, who had also made a similar guess, doesn't get this kind of treatment...
Tumblr media
In sum, the scenes of the battle against the Undying and Chara's destruction of the world both seem to make specific back and forth references to each other in a way that lacks a proper in-world explanation.
Although, it also seems strongly possible that this whole thing might just be a wink to the fact that the game already makes plenty of connections and parallels between Undyne and Chara's characters, opinions, likings and personalities. So this may just be another way to outline how connected these two characters are.

I talked before about how Papyrus’ inability to kill the Player - or rather his ability to always reduce the Player to just one HP - is an indication of not just his incredible kind-heartedness but also some remarkable skill. Considering no other character in the game can safely reduce an enemy to just a single Hit Point with no risk of accidentally killing them. Including other powerful characters who would have an obvious incentive to do so.
Tumblr media
So I think that another factor in why Papyrus is the Best at Not Killing Anyone (outside of his general moral disposition and dedication, which are also important to note) is… probably Sans. If Papyrus ever had anyone else to spar/practice FIGHTing with, it would only be his brother. (Remember, Undyne’s ‘Warrior Training’ is actually just cooking lessons). And Sans only has one HP - Papyrus had to learn to be careful to make sure he never hurts his beloved older bro too much.
In contrast, when Toriel had to learn to use her magic, that was probably before the War of Humans and Monsters, with her old Boss Monster family? Or at the very least with another Monster that is more powerful than ‘the weakest enemy’. So, even if she never ever wanted to use her powers to kill anymore - she never had to learn to be as gentle as Papyrus had to be gentle. I mean, she had some skills at weakening her attacks and making them safer, but they are not quite as precise as Papyrus’ is. And so…

So, I saw something on Reddit that said that the red soul isn't determination but love. The evidence is in a convo undyne and papyrus have in hotland about what the L and R on elevators stand for. This is so cool and interesting and I wish more people talk about it.

honestly probably one of my least favorite undertale theories so far. I never like when Gaster is brought up in a way that just kinda takes away from Alphys' achievements. The True Lab area was always about Alphys, and the determination experiments were meant to be her achievement. Gaster already created the core, I don't get why you need to take away from Alphys to add onto him, basically watering Alphys down into a Gaster imitator that failed. Idk, I feel like some theories try to see deeper meaning in what is relatively straightforward.

Undertale Plot Hole of the Day:
Why do the monsters, which are supposed to be capturing Frisk for their SOUL, just outright shatter the SOUL? Even Asgore just shatters Frisk SOUL, knowing full well he needs it to open the barrier.
It's been 8 years and I have yet to hear a theory about it <3
I would love to hear your thoughts.

Based off the Undertale lore about Grillby that was recently released as of this writing. Can be found here: https://toby.fangamer.com/comics/grillbys/
As for if Grillby can live THAT long? I did have to ask around about that but @under-lore pointed out to me that there is merch saying that Grillby's was established 200X. And we know Chara fell in the underground in 201X. Thanks again Underlore!: https://www.fangamer.com/products/undertale-grillbys-mug
But toby tweeted that merch aint canon soooo.....(shrugs) Also here’s a close up picture of the two kids who built Grillby’s Snowman.

Edit: Wow! I didn’t think I get this many likes and reblogs for this. Thank you all so much!  I actually do a lot of Undertale (and Deltarune) arts so if you can, I would love it if you would check out my other stuff: [Masterpost Link]
I also created an Undertale comic that takes place after the post-pacifist ending of Undertale : [LINK]

Regarding Goner Kid's Eyes
So, as you may know, Goner Kid has no pupils.
Tumblr media
What seems to be more obscure is what the back of Goner Kid's head looks like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two things of note: the back of Goner Kid's head has two lines on it, and the (presumably) horns on Goner Kid's head are drawn differently than Monster Kid's horns. It's almost like the horns were drawn differently specifically so those two lines could be visible.
So, some people have said they think those lines on Goner Kid's Head are eyes. I think that's kind of true, but, while working with Goner Kid's sprites for a separate reason, I realized something.
They aren't eyes; they're pupils.
As in, Goner Kid's missing pupils are on the back of their head.
I edited the pupils onto Goner Kid's eyes, and they're an exact match
Tumblr media
I don't know if I'm the first one to point this out on Tumblr, though I do know that people over on Twitter were surprised when I realized this.
For the sake of comparison, for an image of the sprites together.
Tumblr media
Original scale of the Goner Kid edit for anyone who wants to use it for whatever reason.

A few details about Undertale that I really like:
Napstablook is over 100 years old. They don’t recognize the King or (former) Queen.
Napstablook either has never seen Toriel in the Ruins, or just doesn’t care that she’s there.
Papyrus is really strong. REALLY strong. He’s just way too nice to even capture you.
The fact that its like. A plot twist on BOTH of the human’s identities. The kid you named was actually Chara, and the one you played as was actually Frisk, and neither of them were actually the “players self inserts” that people thought they were.
Flowey trapped himself in a time loop of his own making, and then got bored of it even though he could’ve just. Stopped resetting ? Unless I’m missing something here this is very funny to me.
Just how many characters are mentioned, but never seen.
How every time a character says something meta that implies they know they’re in a game, it can always be turned into something else, making it very vague. I like vague.
The sign on the Librarby.
In the Genocide route, you’re so far gone that Asgore, a monster that’s been alive for over 100 years with six human SOULs in the very next room, is unable to recognize Frisk as anything human.
Flowey is still Asriel under all that, and while he has indeed gone through a LOT of shit, you can still see that when he’s suddenly so terrified of the person he’s convinced himself is Chara that he feels fear for the first time in who-knows-how-long, after pretty much convincing himself he couldn’t feel anything.
The changes in the Neutral endings!!!!!! I love how many different variations of it there are it’s the best hehehehoo!
The Papyrus phone calls… they’re so hectic and there’s sooo much dialogue it’s amazing
This is moreso speculation than anything concrete, but I really like to think about why Flowey thought Frisk was Chara. Had it really been so long that he’d forgotten them? It’s understandable in Pacifist since he was reeeally going through some shit AND Frisk was wearing all of their stuff, but in Genocide he sees them kill everyone and goes “!!!! Chara!” which. Huh ? I personally like to think he spent so long in that little self-imposed time loop of his that he forgot about how Chara actually was, and deluded himself into believing into them being a bad person, just like he felt he was now, simply based on their last moments alone. Kinda fucked up huh?

You know what ?
I know we like to bully Matpat a lot in this fandom, but i'd like to say something positive about him today since his last DR theory just got posted.
As much as one can have reasons to disagree with it or (quite validly) criticise some of its points, this theory is likely the most reasonable one he's ever made about the franchise.
Previous Game theories on UT/DR have usually been pretty out there, rather crazy or even missed key pieces of evidence that contradicted them. But whilst this one still has some flaws, it does seem to have actually put in effort in understanding the game, you can even tell that he's done his homework in actually researching on the narrative of Toby's games since the halloween hack to propose an ending that would remain pretty consistent with those themes.
He's also tried to avoid repeating some of the issues that had been pointed out to him in the past theories, like crediting even tiny clips present for barely a second in that video (following Toby's response to him not giving proper credit once), didn't call Kris he, remained a lot more grounded in the game text itself, etc...
Like, i think you can tell that this time around, he actually genuinely tried, and did came out of it with something that's at least fairly reasonable for DR theory standards.
So well, since this is likely the last we will see of Matpat covering this franchise, i think i wanted to give a little credit to that.

For context, a Youtuber by the name of Schafrillas Productions (you may have heard of 'em) just posted a 'theory' that Reggie and Jake from Free Birds are actually Sans and Papyrus.
And they say we live in the darkest timeline.
