I HAVE to know about "Time to become food".
TELL ME
ahh i love this one so much i can't wait to finish it
it's another fic set in mine and passion's apocalypse au lol it's a rewrite of a chunk of season 1 episode 2 of telltale's the walking dead game
“Sonic, wait,” Sonic’s ear twitched at his name being called, turning to find his little brother grabbing onto his sleeve. He motioned for the teen to bend down so he could whisper to him, earning an eye roll from Rick. The hedgehog waved at the human to tell him to go on without him for now before crouching down, “There’s something really off with these guys.” Tails whispered, glancing behind him at Wayne. “I don’t like it. Please be careful.” “Hey, you don’t gotta worry about me, bud.” Sonic gave the fox a small smile, placing his paw on the younger’s shoulder. “Please just promise you’ll keep an eye on him.” The kit begged, tugging on the cuff of his glove. They needed to find him a new pair, the ones he wore were too torn up. The teen sighed but nodded, taking away the paw on his shoulder so he could press his knuckles against his forehead. He smiled fondly as the fox leaned into the touch, “I promise, bro. I’ll be back before you know it.” “If you’re not back in thirty minutes I’m coming to find you myself.” Tails warned, curling his own paw into a fist so he could press his knuckles against the older’s chest. The hedgehog rolled his eyes, ruffling the kit’s bangs as he rose to his feet. “Deal.” Is all he said before giving a two finger salute, turning around so he could jog up to Rick. The fox frowned as he watched the two of them walk away, a pit of anxiety settling in his stomach. He really hopes it’s just him being paranoid, but he does not trust this place.
“Tails!” His ears perked at his name being called. He turned around to locate who was calling for him, raising a brow when he saw Charmy standing on a swing. That hadn’t been there a few minutes ago. “Come here!” “Where’d that come from?” Tails asked as he walked over, eyeing the rope that held the swing up. It looked sturdy enough. “Vector fixed it!” The bee had a huge grin on his face. He dropped to sit on the swing like you were supposed to and scooted as far to the right as he could, “C’mon, it’s big enough for both of us!” Tails wanted to protest. He really needed to finish fixing the fence and generator, but the happiness he could feel from the younger kept him from saying no. With a sigh, he walked over and hopped onto the swing. “Vector! Push us!” Charmy called, leaning back far enough that Tails worried he’d fall off the swing had he not been holding onto the rope with both of his hands. He instead just laughed at the bee, turning just in time to watch the crocodile shake his head as he made his way over to the kids. “I can’t stay on for too long,” The fox said, leaning against the rope. Vector grabbed hold of the ropes and took a few large steps back, knowing the bee would complain if he didn’t push the high enough, before pushing the swing forward, “but I’ll bet Runt’ll like this. You should show him this once he's feeling better.” “When is he gonna feel better?” Charmy asked, his feet kicking in sync with the swing. The kit shrugged, bringing his tails around to rest in their laps. “Should only be a couple days.” Tails guessed. The arrow hadn’t gone too deep, so the healing process should be pretty quick. He looked over to the farmhouse, a nauseating feeling washing over him as he did so. The fox dug the necklace out from his pocket, carefully rubbing his thumb over Runt’s engraved name on the back of the main charm. It was really messy handwriting that he guessed was the wolf’s. Deciding that the easiest way to make sure it wouldn’t fall out of his pocket or something, Tails clipped the necklace around his neck. The cold metal was a weird sensation, but he’d deal with it.
ive definitely posted the bit with charmy before, but i like it so im posting it again lmao

Amy’s Survival Guide
Synopsis: Rouge is gone for vacation but she can't just leave Shadow and Omega alone for a whole month. As a favor, she asks Amy Rose to stay at their apartment and take care of her two idiots. Amy accepts as she sees this as a great opportunity to create a friendship between the robot and the black hedgehog as well as to pay back all the favors Rouge has done for her. However, as time passes, Amy realizes that this 'opportunity' has really become her doom. Thankfully, Rouge left Amy a red notebook that will help her survive through her stay.
Will Amy create a meaningful bond with Omega and Shadow? Or will she give up as they make her life miserable?
Angst, comfort, hurt, friendship (maybe Romance I don't know yet)
4K
.
Amy would be lying if she said she wasn't scared at all. Looking up at the apartment's building, her little legs tremble. She didn't know if it was because she was scared or because it was the start of winter and she wasn't wearing anything to protect her legs.
The apartment complex was, of course, the finest and most luxurious in the entirety of Central City. As if it was designed to please Team Dark, the exterior of the apartment screamed Shadow the Hedgehog as it was all black. The inside expressed Omega as the inside walls were painted in a beautiful metallic color and the decoration was completely Rouge's personality.
Amy didn't know if she could spend an entire month here. This place was too luxurious and fancy compared to her small cozy house on the outskirts of the city.
But she had to do it.
She took the elevator and pressed the number 9 button. Elevator music played, very monotone and it didn't match Amy's feelings at the moment. With a 'ring' sound the doors of the elevator opened and as she walked out she was once again met luxuries.
As she walked through the elongated hallway. Amy found other rooms that allowed her to see through due that their walls were made out of crystal ... A pool, a gym, a sauna, a movie theater.
Alright, this was getting weird.
As if she was part of a scary movie, Amy carefully looked around to find her room of destination.
And there it was, just as Rouge told her ... Floor nine, number 143.
With a gulp of her saliva, Amy pressed the bell button for a few seconds. She waited for the white bat to show up and prayed to Chaos she didn't at the same time. If Rouge doesn't show up, Amy could leave and that way she could have an excuse to leave.
"Please don't be here, don't be here, don't be-"
"Amy! You are here!"
All hopes of loving were gone as the beautiful bat smiled at her and gave her a killing hug. Amy hugged her and gave small pats on her back, however, the smile she gave him was weaker and full of concerns.
Rouge walked back to her apartment, alluding Amy to follow her and she did. The inside of Team Dark's apartment was smaller than she expected, however considering that they had the whole apartment floor for themselves, it made sense.
Disregarding the size, it was still very well spaced and big enough for three people. Rouge guided Amy to the living room in which a large plasma TV was placed in front of the very comfortable looking couch. It was a silver color and soft like a cloud, Amy could picture Rouge or Shadow falling asleep on it. On the right and left side of the couch, a recliner single sofa of the same color decorated the livingroom. In the middle, a small crystal table was placed. Amy looked around the room and if she couldn't tell any better, she could swear that Rouge was totally in charge of decorating everything. She couldn't wait to see the kitchen.
"Thank you again for doing this honey," Rouge said as she invited Amy to seat in the soft-looking sofa.
The pink hedgehog analyzed the bat's clothes. She was looking as good as always. A pink handbag, tight booty shorts and she was wearing a white loose blouse. Amy could see through her blouse that she was wearing a black bikini top, there was no doubt she was going straight to the beach.
"Remind me why I am doing this again?" Amy looked around the living room again, although all of this was nice she wasn't used to this kind of setting.
"Because I got you a date with Sonic this weekend, remember?" Rouged said. "Besides, I honestly won't be able to rest unless I know someone mature is watching over my two idiots."
Amy sighed, she was defeated. She had to be honest to herself, she didn't want to do this but Rouge was one of her closest friends, if not the closest. The beautiful bat had done many things in the past for the hammer user and it was time she paid for all of that. Amy decided to have a good attitude with this and who knows, maybe after this Omega and Shadow could be ... um in good terms?
"You deserve a good rest," Amy said as she smiled, "Don't worry about it, I'll have everything in control. Besides how bad could it be?"
"Actually, it can be ... a bit bad," Rouge opened her pink handbag and she pulled a small red notebook. She handed it over to Amy who was a bit weird out by her gesture. "I wrote you a survival guide in case anything happens, you know the basic stuff."
Amy was starting to sightly panic, not because of the survival guide itself. When she babysat, it was normal for parents to leave a notebook with small notes written on them just in case something happened. What was freaking her out was that this was a 200-page notebook and by the looks of it, Rouge had written all over it, front and back.
As she looked over the notebook she opened what seemed to be the first chapter.
"Chapter one ... understanding the basics of the powerful robot E123 Omega & The Ultimate Life Form, Shadow the Hedgehog," Amy read out loud as she eyed Rouge who had a weak smile.
Rouge scratched the back of her head in embarrassment and looked to the other side. "There's even a table of content ... but honestly don't worry about it too much, this is only if anything bad happens and if you can't reach out to me."
"Well, I certainly do appreciate the thought," Amy held the red notebook tightly. She knew that in the month she was going to be staying here, there was meant to be some type of emergency. The pink one noticed that for it to be a shared apartment, it was awfully quiet. "By the way ... Where are Omega and Shadow?"
"Omega is getting maintenance with the yellow fox," Rouge said. "Friendly reminder he needs to do maintenance every two weeks and Shadow, well ... I don't know. He is somewhere out there."
The pink one let out a small sigh a bit relieved but it was short-lived as a thought crossed her mind. "Wait, they do know that I am staying over right?"
"Oh, my look at the time! I am going to miss the plane!" Rouge placed a hand on her right cheek as she stood up from the couch.
"Wait, Rouge but-"
"You will be fine! They are nice once you get to know them," the white one walked towards along the halls of the apartment and disappeared into a room. She was quick to come back with a black suitcase and happily, she headed towards the exit door.
Amy followed from behind, still wishing that there was a way that the bat would stay.
"If anything bad happens, just call me and if I don't answer just read the survival guide," she said as she pointed at the red notebook in Amy's hand. After a pause, Rouge opened her arms and at such a gesture, Amy embraced her friend in one of her signature hugs.
"Take care, and please keep me updated with your trip," Amy said as she released Rouge from her grasp.
"I will!" Rouge said. "If Shadow and Omega bring you trouble, don't hesitate to call me as well."
With a soft nod from the pink one, Rouge gave one last smile. She knew that the pink will survive this month. Rouge opened the door and left.
As she watched the bat leave, many questions arose in Amy's head. Why didn't Shadow and Omega say their goodbyes? Why didn't Rouge tell them that Amy was going to be staying? Why did Rouge go as so far as to write her a survival guide?
Her thoughts went back again to the red notebook she was holding. It looked brand new as if Rouge had just bought it for the sole reason to write to Amy.
She thought about it, this could be a good read and by the looks of the weather, it seemed like it was going to rain anytime soon.
"Alright," Amy said to herself. "Let's do this."
It was already 7 p.m. and there was no sign of the robot nor the hedgehog. Amy had already placed her things in Rouge's room. She had brought just some necessities, pajamas, a few extra pairs of clothes, toothbrushes, deodorant, and other utilities.
Since it was already late, Amy decided to change into her pajamas. Oversize pink shorts and a white blouse that only slipped off her shoulders once in a while because it was just too big for her.
As she finished making a cup of coffee for herself, Amy sat on the very soft couch. She brought her legs up and extended them along with the elongated couch. She opened the red notebook as she took a sip of her coffee. She encountered the first page that reads:
Table of contents:
I.The basics of the powerful robot E123 Omega & the Ultimate Life Form Shadow the hedgehog ... Pg.3
II. Habits ... Pg. 10.
III. Strange mannerism ... Pg. 17.
IV. Understading Omega ... Pg. 22.
V. Understanding Shadow Part 1 ... Pg. 27.
The list continued and it was long but Amy decided to skip it and decided to just jump right into chapter one. She reached page three and Amy appreciated Rouge's extremely artistic handwriting, cursive and feminine ... it was very much like her. With that in mind, the pink hedgehog began to read.
The basics of the powerful robot E123 Omega & the Ultimate Life Form Shadow the hedgehog ...
Chapter One
If you are reading this, that means that you are lovely Amy Rose and you need some help with understanding and living with my two idiots. They can a bit rude sometimes (especially Shadow) but they mean good. But before we went into the good parts, I want to recommend you to keep this notebook to yourself and NEVER show this to either Shadow or Omega. This notebook will contain some personal information about the two. So if you want to keep living here and maybe build a bond with my two idiots, then you should follow my advice. Alright, let start with Omega, because he is easier to understand. Here are some basic points you need to know about him.
Omega:
-Rarely gets angry but if he does just give him a glass of his favorite type of oil. (Goldfire 4-Stroke Synthetic Blend Motor Oil)
-Omega shuts down completely when he sleeps.
-Although he is very overprotective of Shadow, he is always pushing him to go out of comfort zone.
-After our latest mission, Omega got badly injured and he needs to do maintenance every two weeks.
-He loves to watch Terminator, which always puts him in a good mood.
- He is a robot he still trying to figure out what it means to have friends, He doesn't many friends so if you could help him that, that would be great!
Shadow:
-He is almost always in a bad mood. There's no way you can make him feel better, just let him be.
-He hates to awaken.
-Don't go inside his room ... NEVER.
-He loves his bike if there's anything that makes him happy is riding his Harley.
-He sometimes brings a girl to the apartment, the only thing I can recommend is to leave the apartment until the next day ... bring Omega with you please.
-He loves coffee, he buys very expensive coffee beans. You shall NEVER ... NEVER make coffee out his beans.
"What the fuck are you doing here?"
Being afraid was an understatement ... Amy was almost shitting herself. She was seated very comfortably on the sofa, the red notebook in her hand and on the other a cup of coffee. Turning her head slowly, she found Shadow the Hedgehog staring down at her from the other side of the sofa. Vermillion's eyes showed angered and Amy didn't know what he was angry about out of the 1000 reasons there was.
"You better give a good reason as to why you are in my apartment, drinking my coffee beans." Shadow didn't hesitate to move closer to Amy. Before he was behind the sofa but now he was right in front of the pink hedgehog, next to the crystal table.
At first, Amy was scared and she didn't pay attention to Shadow's details. The black hedgehog was wearing nothing but his iconic black jacket. His hoover shoes and gloves with rings. His clothing wasn't the thing she cared about, it was mostly the fact that he was soaking wet.
"Of course, the rain must have gotten him while he was riding his bike back home."
"Are you alright? Do you want me to bring you a towel?"
Amy's response took Shadow by surprise, he didn't think too much about it as his anger was more powerful at the moment.
"Just answer my question."
Amy gulped as she sat down straight and puts her cup of coffee on top of the crystal table. She looked around nervously, thinking about how she could word her answer.
"Rouge asked me to ... stay here and watch over you and Omega," Amy said.
Shadow placed a hand on her forehead and the other on his waist, showing his frustration. "She what?"
"Rouge asked me to-"
"I heard you the first time!" the black hedgehog pulled out his phone. He was looking for some privacy and so, he walked towards the next room, which was the kitchen.
Pressing different buttons on his phone, he finally dialed the number he was looking for. He pressed the phone on his ear as he waited for the bat to answer.
"Rouge the bat speaking,"
"Would you mind telling me why on Mobius is that pink fur doing in my apartment?" Shadow asked as he tried to control his level of anger.
"You mean, our apartment honey and she is staying because I asked her to," Rouge made a pause. "I can't enjoy my vacations unless I know someone I trust is there taking care of you two."
"I am 23 Rouge! I am an adult, and I can take care of myself and Omega-" Shadow wanted to protest but he was immediately interrupted.
"Shadow ... last time I left you and Omega alone you lit up the apartment on fire," Rouge responded, she sounded a bit agitated as if she was running.
"There was a stupid fly who wouldn't stop bothering us!" Shadow said, losing the little self-control he had left. "Look, I am kicking her out tonight, I don't care if it's raining-"
"Shadow, you won't kick Amy Rose out of that apartment!" Rouge said and by her voice, Shadoe knew that she was actually very serious about this. "First of all, yes this may be your apartment as well. But when you bring your girl, you don't hear me complaining. Second of all, you own me A LOT, Shadow the Hedgehog. I have done so many things for you and although I am not one to expect anything back, I want to ask this favor of you ... let Amy stay, that's all I am asking."
Fine, Shadow had to admit that Rouge was right. The black one had recently taken interest in this girl who he had been bringing to the apartment from time to time. Even when she was a stranger, Rouge nor Omega never complained. Another thing was that he owned too many favors and apologies to the white bat. Like the time he had gotten in trouble for not finishing his report at G.U.N. and Rouge stayed all night with him to finish it. Or that time Rouge had to carry him from the bar to the apartment because he got too drunk. There were countless of times in which the white bat had helped in unconditionally, and he couldn't fail her this time when she was only asking a small favor of him.
To let Amy stay at their apartment for a month.
"Fine," Shadow whisper, he let out a big sigh, accepting his fate. "But if she ever touches my coffee or if enters my room ... I'll kick her out."
"I'll reinforce that next time I talk to her."
Although Shadow couldn't see her, he could bet all of his money that Rouge was smiling from cheek to cheek at the moment.
"Now, I have to go! I need to catch a plane! Give my greetings to Omega!" Rouge said. "Bye-bye, hug and kisses!"
And with that, the beautiful bat hung up.
To collect his thoughts, Shadow looked around the kitchen. For the most part, it was clean except that the coffee machine was moved out of it's an original place and that there was still some coffee left in the crystal mug. It was an all-white kitchen and if anything happened to it, he would know for sure that he would hear the last from Rouge.
Maybe having Amy would be good ... at least to keep the kitchen clean.
Shadow decided to go back to the living room to tell Amy that she could stay. However, he was very surprised to see that she wasn't alone. E123 Omega was sitting next to the pink one and they were comfortably chatting with each other about Chaos knows what.
"Oh, so you don't have any more bumps?" Amy asked as she looked over the metal robot. "Tails for sure does do a good job."
"Affirmative, however, the fox boy still needs to repair internal damage," said Omega.
"Internal damage?" Amy asked.
"Wires, software updates, arsenal-"
Shadow cared for the robot and if he dared say it, he considers him his closest friend. Omega's simplicity and honesty was something that Shadow always appreciated about him. It took him a while for both of them to open up to each other. It seemed like Omega and the pink furball clicked very fast ... and to be honest it kinda bothers him.
"I am I interrupting?" Shadow asked as he once again stood up in front of the pink one and the metal one.
"Not really," Amy said, still her eyes focused on the robot. An idea appeared in Amy's head as she remembered Rouge's word on the red notebook. "Actually, I was thinking we could watch a movie ... Terminator maybe?"
A silence filled the room, but fast enough, Omega responded.
"I'll make the popcorn," Omega said as he stood up from the sofa and disappeared into the kitchen.
Once again, Amy and Shadow were left in the room. The pink hedgehog was staring at Shadow for longer that she wanted to but she would be lying if she said that she didn't worry about him ... and the fact that he was still soaking wet and ruining the wooden floor.
"So um ... can I stay?" the words came out of her mouth. She was trying too hard maybe to look for validation and approval from the black hedgehog. Just like Shadow, Amy's motivation to stay was Rouge. One of her closest friends had asked her for a favor and she just couldn't fail her. The only thing between becoming victorious and not was Shadow the hedgehog, probably the strongest creature she has ever known.
Shadow felt guilty enough that the pink one was looking for validation from him. At the end of the day, he was no one to tell her what to do. If she wanted to stay, she may do so as long she follows the rules and respects his privacy.
"Yes, just don't enter my room," with that said, Shadow was ready to change into a new pair of clothes. His leather jacket was already bothering him as the friction from it pained his fur.
"Thank you!" said Amy, who was still seated on the sofa. "Also ... should take a shower right now."
"What?"
"I don't want you getting sick, get in the shower, now," said Amy as her voice changed, she meant business.
Alright, maybe Shadow was giving her too much credit before it was due.
"You don't tell me what to do," Shadow said. "I'll just change my clothes."
"Then you are not allowed to drink coffee for a week," Amy said again not bugging her. She sounded very serious and confident about herself. However, in the inside, she was just really scared that Shadow might kick her out. Omega didn't mind too much about her presence and he would do as she says but Shadow? This would be a challenge.
"It's my coffee, and you won't take it away from me."
"I'll hide it after you leave from work," Amy said. "Please Shadow don't make this difficult, I want you to take a shower so you don't get sick ... please."
Shadow was really trying to keep shi act together. He didn't want to be rude but she was making it difficult. "I am the Ultimate Life Form, I don't get sick."
"You got infected with the Zombot virus before right? Who are you to say that you won't get sick with a cold?"
Touché
The pink hedgehog has Shadow's slight interest now and although he wanted to keep complaining, his mind was empty. There was something however that could work and it was very true. However, he was too prideful to ever admit it.
Amy knew that there was something that Shadow was hiding from her. Amy had an idea of what could it be and it was worth a shot.
"And don't worry," Amy said. "We won't put the movie until you are out."
Watching Shadow's expression change from concern to relief was all that Amy needed to know that Shadow was just a misunderstood hedgehog. Amy smiled, reassuring him.
Shadow rolled his eyes, sighed and walked away into the apartment's hallway. He was actually looking forward to a warm shower. But before leaving, he whispered something under his breath, loud enough for only him and Amy to hear.
"Good."

A/N: I am a sucker for Amy, Shadow, Omega, and Rouge interactions. So, here is the first chapter of this series. I will write as more scenarios pop up in my head but I have already thought of some really cute scenarios. Also, I know I write a lot of romantic ShadAmy. However, I plan for this story to mostly showing their friendship and platonic love. Maybe ... MAYBE, later on, it will develop into romance but it all depends on how I develop their friendship at first. So for now if you want to see their relationship as platonic or not that's up to you. I am really excited to write Amy and Omega in extreme and funny situations and just explore how they will react to each other. Anyways, thanks again for reading!
Until next time.

MARIO KART IS AVAILABLE ON THE APPSTORE NOW YAAAY So in honor of that how bout an hc bout all the class 1a kids playing Mario Kart together on the console?
I KNOW RIGHT IVE BEEN PLAYING IT ALL DAY INSTEA D OF DOING CLASS WORK AND I AM OBSESSED
Class 1-A
Uraraka will not play with any other character other than Princess Peach (fuck everyone else)
Bakugou gets AGGRESSIVE and he has exploded 12 controllers and Momo is about to beat his ass if she has to make another one
The biggest sore losers are: Denki, Sero, Mina- actually it’s just everyone from the Bakusquad. Bakugou is the king of being a sore loser like if he gets anything but 1st place, he is breaking the console and going to Nintendo’s headquarters to call the creator of the game ‘a lousy fucking moron’
Deku is surprisingly good at this game like he may not seem like it but he’s the best gamer boy of 1-A. He had a lonely childhood that he remedied with playing Mortal Kombat and pretending he was ripping Kacchan’s spine out.
Mineta isn’t allowed to play. Fuck him.
Mina and Hagakure argued over which princess is better- Daisy or Peach (trick question: best girl is Rosalina)
Kaminari says that he would let Bowser rim him and nobody ever lets him forget it.
Sero and Kirishima are in the background while other people play and will be everyone’s personal hype man or they’ll be like “OHHHHH!!!!” when Tokoyami destroys everyone and comes in first place.
It’s Todoroki first time playing Mario Kart so he keeps getting stuck on the side and he looks like a kicked puppy when he comes in last place so he decides he would prefer to watch UNTIL DEKU TEACHES HIM THE GAMER CULTURE. Then he is unstoppable.
Tokoyami would rather play Shadow The Hedgehog tbh
Shoji accidentally swallows a controller when he grabs it with the wrong dupli-arm.
Aizawa watches from a distance, drinking his badass black coffee as Iida cries after getting his ass kicked off of rainbow road by Oijiro
Road Rock Mountain is Kirishima’s favorite setting smh 🤦🏻‍♀️
Tsuyu loves Baby Mario so much like she full body uwus every time she sees him.
When everyone has cried, bled and had 3 mental breakdowns,,,,Jirou is just like “I told y’all we should’ve played Guitar Hero 😒”
Shinsou will come and use his quirk to take Deku’s place of #1 Gamer Boy. Everyone says it’s ‘cheating’ but they rather have him than that other purple-haired fucker.
Kaminari and Sero have Mario and Luigi onesies that they always wear to Mario Kart Night and you can try and roast them but the power of their bro-ness is too overpowering.
Bakugou loves playing as Donkey Kong and I don’t even have to explain this like-
HE’S A FURRY
no cap periodt pooh sksksksk
You might not expect this but Aoyama is the biggest rage-quitter. He is the equivalent of “So, no head?” But that’s whenever he doesn’t win @ the console. Fucking drama queen.
You know shit is about to go down when Momo puts her hair up in a ponytail, she about to go ham on everyone’s ass like you think she’s a preppy rich girl that has never seen a video game in her life? You’re fucking wrong, because she owns every fucking console ever made and has bought every game on Steam.
Koda gets too nervous when the game starts and goes slow because he doesn’t want to go over the speed limit :((
Iida is surprisingly terrible at MK like you think ,bc of the fact that he has a speed quirk and looks like Sonic The Hedgehog’s humansona, that he would be good at this game but he fucking sucks
Sato sits in the back, playing Cooking Mama on his Nintendo DS ( it’s rose gold and it’s MANLY)
You think Deku is an innocent little smol bean, right? FUCK NO HE WILL CUSS SO BAD THAT IT MAKES BAKUGOU SCARED. THIS SHITHEAD IS AGGRESSIVE AND M E A N.
Deku: “Shoji-san...CAN YOU MOVE YOUR FAT FUCKING ASS OUT OF THE WAY BEFORE I FUCK YOUR MOM AND CHANGE THE WIFI PASSWORD YOU OCTOPUS-LOOKING FUCKING BITCH”
R.I.P. Izuwu. He is too far gone to save from the depths of Mario Kart Hell.

what makes me happy about them: i just. theyre adorable and i love them. and enemies to friends to lovers is so so good....
what makes me sad about them: that they were friends for a while but then sega went “nope shadow is sonic’s asshole rival now”
things done in fanfic that annoy me: sonic and/or shadow hating amy, and amy hating shadow for “stealing sonic away from her”... amy Does have a crush on sonic sure, but shes also his friend, so i think shed be very supportive of sonic being with shadow even if shes a little sad that sonic doesnt like her back
things i look for in fanfic: tbh werehogs. werehog fanfics are like the only things i go out of my way to find. most werehog fics are s*namy so if i manage to find a good sonadow fic with the werehog in it... epic win
my wishlist: uh i dont really know.
who i’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not eachother: for shadow, knuckles. for sonic, knuckles espio or mighty.
my happily ever after for them: idk man i just want them to be happy in general i dont have any specific plans for them.
003 | give me a character and i will tell you:
how i feel about this character: i love him :)
any/all the people i ship romantically with this character: none really.. sonilver is cute but i dont like. Actively ship it.
favorite non-romantic relationship with this character: blaze!! love those siblings :)
my unpopular opinion about this character: i honestly cant really think of one.
one thing i wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: i cant think of any specific thing i want for silver..
my favorite friendship for this character: blaze and espio
my crossover ship: none

“it kinda makes me sad when artists giving out tutorials on character...”
oh could you talk more about this? :o
ABSOLUTELY thank u for enabling me to go off about designs i love this shit this may get a bit long so its going under a readmore (sorry if ur on mobile i hope it works)
gonna start this off with im no expert Nor have i taken any sort of official art class this is me just analyzing characters from what i found that makes them memorable to ppl (most of these examples are going to be from games sorry i got them on my mind)
ok so basically making a memorable revolves around personality and appearance now theres different ways to go about showing these things and i think from consuming media you like will help narrow down how you wanna go about it, basically thinking about your character inside and out!
SO shapes and hyperstylization is a good way to get a fun appearance across in a cartoon esp media and is often what a lot of artists stress on an example of using shapes and a good silhouette to make a memorable character is sonic!(specifically comic sonic)
Tumblr media
(had to google idw sonic for a non...u know image)
but not only do they use lots of triangles for this hedgehog they also made him blue! you’d be more likely to remember a blue headgehog over a realistically colored one!(also almost all of the sonic characters have a combination of fun shape + unusual color to help you remember them! the designs werent afraid to use color to make a bold statement)(he’s also segas mascot so of course they put a lot of work in his design)
now sonics appearance is not the only reason why people like him or remember him so much he’s also got personality! he’s cocky, fast, always getting into trouble, “you’re too slow!”, accompanied by shitty butt rock and a cool guy persona ie he’s got personality! and they weren’t afraid to give him some weird interests(see the butt rock) and he’s not perfect( see arrogance) if youve ever played a sonic game you have almost always remembered the crush 40 theme that went with it
all in all to go with his unusual appearance he’s got some unusual traits! it helps make him believable! admittedly he’s not the most embarrassing of the sonic crew (see knuckles or shadow) but he’s definitely rounded and not boring from an objective standpoint(you can not like sonic or his games i dont care)
(another example of something that requires good shapes is pokemon altho they arent really like very depthy since there are 600+ and some only have like a pokedex entry worth of info but still they have good and memorable designs)
NOW something that doesnt have the most “good shapes” design off the top of my head is link
Tumblr media
now in the most recent zelda game his most memoriable physical attribute is that he’s on the androgynous side w his longer hair and smaller build but in his older designs he looked something like this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(art for a loz:link to the past)
not really that much of a striking silhouette, but what do we look at and kinda leaves an impression on us? his hair and hat! its very silly to see someone in such a big green hat with that big of bangs/mullet, the hat at least became so ridiculous of a look that in botw nintendo didnt include his hat in links main outfit bc it was too hard to make look good, its silly! thats good! its fine to have a normal human looking characters because sometimes stories are about humans, but if you want us to remember them include something that will strike us as strange for them
also probably a good thing to note is the noises link makes when he swings his sword, jumps, pushes something, ie any action they have always been something that has stuck with me
(another example similar to this is in mgs solid snake in mgs is this cool super spy but is rocking a full on mullet which is considered a joke hairstyle. this leaves an impression on us. a spy with a mullet! how ridiculous! another example is raiden who was specifically made bc a woman wrote that she didnt want to play as an “old man” so the protagonist of the super spy game is a longer haired pretty boy (with a huge ass))
now ive explained a little on a character with good shapes and personality and a character with a more “boring” shape design that makes up for it with almost quirky design choices but i feel like theres another series thats what originally got me thinking about how even a memorable silhouette doesnt need hyperstylization
Tumblr media
ace attorney! (which is out on switch now if u havent played it i would def recommend it)
if you dont know the protagonist is the guy in the blue suit(phoenix), which well he looks like just a guy...with ridiculously spikey hair enough so that in his silhouette you can recognize him but also his posture (the pointing) makes for a sticking recognizable image bc if you’ve played the games you can practically hear objection just from looking at phoenix’s silhouette
which is another thing id like to talk about! not only are a good shape a way to have a good silhouette but posture is also important! how the character holds themselves can say alot about them just from a glance! such as meekness, arrogance, confidence, sadness, anger, happiness its a very important too especially when you arent relying on stylization
now onto the characters of ace attorney ive gone over phoenix's design a bit but theres a few others id like to look at with some Weird style choices that make us remember them(just going to glance over them since this post is so long)
Tumblr media
now, this woman, franziska von karma, she dresses kind of strange for a prosecutor but her outfit is not too out there and her silhouette is not striking
but you see that whip? remember how i said she was a prosecutor? yeah she will strike people in court for getting off topic and will even hit phoenix when he starts breaking down her witnesses testimonies, which what literally strikes up about her
Tumblr media
another prosecutor, godot, now his hair could provide a somewhat memorable shape but what we first notice is the strange mask on his face which is weird, but not the Same weird as franziska bringing a whip to court thus having both of these prosecutors being Weirdly memorable for different things (another note is his liking of coffee that he does not give up even in court ha ha)
now onto the other protag for the aa games
Tumblr media
apollo! who also has weirdly spikey hair, but even if you put a silhouette of him next to phoenix you could tell there some was a difference between the two! its showing a pattern with the protags while also keeping them distinct enough to be able to tell who is who! although you cant say the pointy haired guy from ace attorney and not get just One answer unlike saying the prosecutor who has a whip but still they are distinct to people who have little experience with the series
sorry i dont have any sort of conclusion on this this was just sort of me rambling on about character design, but my main point is if you are discouraged bc all your characters dont have wildly different silhouettes thats ok! there are other ways to establish a good memorable character! dont be afraid to make them a little weird! give your character pink hair in a medieval setting, have them be ridiculously in love with tigers they have a striped shirt and pants, let them love childrens tv shows and have them never miss an episode, give them wacky hair or an extreme love of gum, show us some personality!! but dont forget about how they act and their values and dont forget that posture can go a long way for establishing a first impression
there are also many other methods to making a good character! like colors and dress!
silly is the way to go! have fun with it!!
there isnt just one way to make a good character!! theres plenty of more series that have good character design that i didnt mention pay attention to why you like the characters you like! also watch this video bc its really good

The Jade Warrior part 1
One day during one of Eggmans robots attacks on the city a White hedgehog with red stripes watching from the distance on the dark rooftops of the night quietly watches the robot fight Sonic the hedgehog his was his first time seeing Sonic in person so he decided to stay back and let Sonic handle the situation on his own...
But after a bit his headset got radio chatter that GUN agents were going to arrive on the scene soon so he decided to bail and steer clear from them he’d rather not be seen by them so he put his hood on and quickly left the scene.
“I guess I’ll have to get to know the blue blur of mobius some other time then...I’d rather not cause a commotion and kill GUN agents...”
With that the mysterious hedgehog vanished...
~Few days later~
Saga learns of that Eggman managed to board the space colony ark and was worried that Eggman May accidentally cause permanent damage and kill many innocent lives so he went to look for Sonic and his group.
~After finding them~
“Hey!” Saga called out to Sonic as he manages to find them.
“Huh? Who are you? Were in a bit of a hurry so it’s gonna have to be quick.” Sonic was calm despite the urgency of their situation.
“My name is Saga the hedgehog if your going up to the space colony ark I can assist you I...Ive been there before so I know how some of the security systems work up there.”
Saga tried to make it seem like he didn’t live up there and just checked the place out so they weren’t to suspicious of him.
“Umm...Ok, Guess it would be good to have someone who knows how things work up there but how did you get up there the first time anyway? Seems kinda odd if you ask me.” Unfortunately Sonic wasn’t buying it and was a little suspicious of Saga.
“It’s...it’s hard to explain but I’ll explain everything when we get up there and stop Eggman from using the ark...you have my word.” Saga placed a hand on his chest and bowed his head a little to show he was serious and he would keep his word.
“Hmmm...alright I believe you let’s go guys.”
After that conversation Saga tagged along with Sonic and his group I’m going to the ark and the eventually arrived and they all split up into groups Sonic and Saga going alone though Saga went for the security room and Sonic searches for Eggman.
After a bit Saga reaches the security room and deactivated the security system and headed back to Sonic who was fighting at the moment.
“Sonic I’m on my way to your location right now.”
Soon Saga reaches Sonic who was seemingly looking at a broken down wall as if he was fighting someone.
“Sonic? What’s wrong?”
“Huh? Oh hey Saga nah it’s nothing to worry about just had to fight someone real quick don’t worry if they come around again I can handle them.” Sonic taps Saga’s shoulder as he passes him and both head back to the others.
Once the two rejoin the others Sonic and Knuckes head to the main core room with the master emerald to stop the chaos emeralds power once they find out that the ark is actually heading down to earth to destroy it completely, Saga stays in the main room with the rest to keep a close eye on how close the ark is to the earth.
~A few minutes later~
Shadow finds the group in the main room and both Rouge and Amy tried talking to Shadow to convince him to help but Shadow didn’t notice Saga since he was covered by Knuckles,Tails, and a few others the had along with him.
But the whole time Shadow didn’t say much and Saga didn’t know Shadow was there until he turned around when he heard Rouge say his name.
“S-Shadow....?” Saga slowly moved through the crowd completely shocked when he saw Shadow and slowly walked to him. “I...I can’t believe...it’s you...” Saga had tears forming in his eyes as he slowly walks to Shadow.
“S-Saga...it’s really you...your...your alive...and safe...” Shadow shocked slowly walked to Saga with one of his hands slowly rising up and reaching for him and when they got close to each other where their face to face Shadow gently pulls Saga in for a hug and hugs him tightly.
Saga returns the hug quickly and begins to cry quietly and his tears trickle down his face Same for Shadow.
“I..I’m so glad...your ok...big brother....” At this point Saga was shaking and was hugging Shadow tightly smiling and nuzzling Shadow.
“I...I feel the same...Saga...now we’re together again...and your safe...that’s all that matters now...my precious little brother...” Shadow smiles and hugs Saga closely and nuzzles Saga a little as well with tears on both of their cheeks.
~After a few minutes~
Saga and Shadow calmed down and finished their reunion for the time being. “Shadow...we need to save the world and stop the ark from falling.” Saga calmly grabs Shadows hand. “Don’t forget...we promised Maria...”
Shadow immediately remembered when Maria asked him to protect the world with Saga and he took a deep breath and held Saga’s hand and Sonic walked up to them tapping them both on the shoulder and winking at them both. “So you guys ready?”
Shadow and Saga both nod yes and the trio head to the room where the chaos and master emerald is being held in and fight the Bio-lizard for a bit, shortly after the Bio-lizard vanished and soon after Sonic and Shadow and Saga went to go super. After they went super they quickly left the room to fight the Bio-lizard and the trio of Sonic, Shadow, and Saga went outside the ark to defeat the Bio-lizard, and stop the ark from crashing down onto the earth.
Soon after the trio began their battle against the Bio-lizard and fought to the best of their abilities and defeated the lizard but still had to stop the ark from crashing down into the earth, in a effort to stop the ark from falling any further. Sonic, Shadow, and Saga used their chaos energy to push back the Ark, but unfortunately it wasn’t slowing down one bit.
“DARN IT! NGH..!” Sonic exclaimed it seems he was starting to struggle and soon after.
There was plenty of debris floating around after the battle and some of it ended up flying towards Saga, but he was to focused on stopping the acceleration of the ark so he didn’t notice.
“SAGA!!” Shadow kept a close eyes on Saga throughout he battle so he quickly spotted the rubble flying at Saga and pushes him out of the way and tries to stop the rubble with a chaos spear luckily for him it broke into small pieces that he can easily avoid.
“Shadow if you were going to do that you didn’t need to push me out of the way.” Saga commented while giving Shadow a side hug, but Shadow just blushed a little and slightly hugged Saga back.
“Awww you two are just adorable! Shadow you love your little bro so much don’t ya?” Sonic flew up to them doing an exaggerated expression while holding his hands tilting his head ever so slightly just to mess with Shadow a bit. This simply made Shadow blush more looking away with a frown.
“Oh shut up hedgehog! We still have to stop the ark from destroying earth!” Shadow filled with the determination of the promise he wishes to fulfill and charges towards the ark and begins to push it back with his chaos energy.
Sonic floated next to Saga and said sarcastically. “*Whistles* Shadow’s definitely a protective big bro ain’t he?”
Saga gives Sonic a calmed smile and looks back at Shadow “Yeah, he is, but....probably a little too much at times though.” Saga nervously chuckles from remembering when he had to stop Shadow from hurting a scientist that kept asking to experiment on Saga to learn more about his abilities.
“He almost killed someone once didn’t he?” Sonic smirked thinking that was what Shadow would possibly try to do being overprotective.
“Y-yeah he tried to kill someone once.” Saga sighed looking back at Shadow who was now giving both of them the stink eye.
“Less talking. More focus on saving the entire world from complete oblivion.” Shadow flew to Saga and simply put his arm around him and pulled him back into the battle now just giving sonic the stink eye, and Sagas just going along with what’s happening.
Once the trio put their focus back on stopping the ark from crashing into the planet, they tried pushing it back using chaos control.
But...our hero’s were struggling and their efforts appeared to almost be in vain...with the ark still closing in on the planet the trio were starting to become desperate and sonic and Shadow did their best to bring out more power but the battle with the Bio lizard took its toll on the two they were struggling far more then Saga and he knew it...So he decided to do last resort plan he created for a situation such as this...

//✔ : What drew you to the character you currently play? What types of characters are you generally drawn to?
( hhh gosh man, what drew me to sonic indeed,,
well for starters sonic is,, like, my childhood hero ? I mean we all love the guy and the franchise and what not and im sure everyone else can relate but yeah sonic is actually one of the very first memories i have. the first videogame i ever played was sonic the hedgehog 2 and i remember watching my older brother play it and i would play as tails but i was so little and terrible at it lmao. I remember sometimes i got to play as sonic tho and it was fun but, chemical plant zone always scared tf out of me for some reason LMAO. the pink water and the spiders freaked me tf out i could never get past that level.
from then on those games have always just been close to my heart i loved sonic heroes and sonic 06 and unleashed and i was so miffed that i missed out on sonic colors because i remember that winter seeing the commercials for it and how pretty the theme song of the game was and just...how gorgeous it looked i was so awed as a kid. seeing sonic run around, smiling and saving the day, ive just always had a soft spot for the guy!! he was my inspiration and i always got excited when i saw merch or someome referenced him i just ptlbhlbh my hero ok !!
however i never really payed much attention to him if only because like... he had no backstory. nothing that expanded upon the lore of the world he lives in. he was just this smiling hero character that saved the day to me and i struggled to relate to that growing up. I found myself getting more attached to characters like amy and shadow and knuckles bc they all had stuff about them that interested and spoke to me.
I /did/ temporarily have him as a muse like 5-6 ish years ago back with my old rp group, he was fun but i never really got too into it bc it wasnt really the type of crowd to rp him with so i ended up dropping him.
I didnt /really/ start... Paying attention to sonic until recent years when i got back into roleplay and the sonic fandom. My old rp partner had sonic for a muse and i loved how they portrayed him in some aspects, but in others i could never really get behind. It made me wanna try writing him again and for a while i had an ask blog up and running with some other characters but again it wasnt really enough and my partner was kinda possessive of him so :/ i couldnt rp him with my partner. but they ended up losing interest in sonic rp anyway so i started looking elsewhere and i ended up here and decided to give sonic another try. Needless to say i cant believe it took me this long to really appreciate him. when i said there wasnt much about him that interested me- that i could relate to, i meant that like he just seemed so simple and uncomplicated. he didnt have any complexities to him that i ever noticed and it wasnt really until i picked him up as a muse did i consider maybe it was because he /hides/ those complications. He has such a huge responsibility on his shoulders and everyone looks up to him (myself included) that he has to put on that brave face and has to be strong for everyone else. /thats/ what i found... relatable. )

Sega and franchise decay
Sonic Forces, the newest 3D game to star a certain blue hedgehog, is out now and receiving middling reviews. Rather than talk about it, I’d rather discuss the 2D Sonic Mania, which came out a few months ago. I never got the chance to blog about it until now, but you can read my Steam review for what it’s worth. I would’ve preferred that the game be composed of all new levels instead of a few new ones and remixed oldies, and in some ways I do believe that Sonic Generations did the “celebration of past and future” shtick a tad better, but overall, I had a good time with Mania. The most impressive thing about it, in my eyes, is how well it captures that 90s-2000s Sega “magic.” It’s hard to describe this in words, but during those years the company’s output, especially their in-house, exclusive stuff, just radiated coolness and creativity that was a little different from what Nintendo was doing. Whether it was the neon visual smorgasbord that encompassed all of the zones in Sonic’s games or the Moebius-inspired fantasy trappings of the Panzer Dragoon series, Sega’s games often seemed fresher and sexier, with dashes of unexpected punk and sophistication in them that the Big N could never really capture. I mean, the run ‘n jump levels and cheery tunes of the Mushroom Kingdom in the Mario games were wonderful, but hell, Sonic 3 featured snowboarding action and a soundtrack that Michael Jackson worked on.
Unfortunately, while the Nintendo of 2017 is kicking butt with the Switch and has upcoming releases scheduled for most of their classic franchises, the Sega of 2017 is in a much different position, and the changes began after the sad failure of the Dreamcast in 2001, when Sega killed off its hardware unit. In the years since, the company’s slowly morphed from a creative house that bankrolled a franchise of games starring an alien-fighting aquatic mammal (Ecco the Dolphin) into a conservative organization that does NOT want to repeat the monetary losses that were suffered during the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast eras, and is therefore highly selective with what it publishes and develops. And somewhere along the way, most of the older franchises that Sega was known for went by the wayside, because their most recent entries either underperformed or they were considered too risky for today’s gaming environment. If you look at the company’s website, you can see a list of what modern Sega considers to be their top tier franchises, and most of them are Western ones that were acquired fairly recently, like Company of Heroes. As far as notable in-house Japanese stuff is concerned, you’ve really only got the Yakuza and Hatsune Miku games (guaranteed moneymakers in Japan, which is why they keep getting made), and Sonic (a guaranteed moneymaker in the rest of the world).  What happened to all those franchises of the past, then? Sega let them decay. Shinobi got its last release - a pretty good 3DS game - in 2011, and there’s been nary a word since. Anything is possible with ninjas, since Capcom brought Strider back from a 15 year retirement in 2013, but for now, Joe Musashi is AWOL. Ecco the Dolphin died in the Dreamcast era, Shining Force seems to have sputtered out after several PS2 and PSP releases that barely resembled the series’ strategy roots, and Panzer Dragoon vanished after Sega’s short-lived flirtation with the original Xbox in the early 2000s. The Oasis series (Beyond Oasis and Legend of Thor) never survived past the Sega Saturn, despite featuring excellent top-down action RPG gameplay that had the potential to go up against Zelda, if Sega had only invested the resources. While we’re on the topic of RPGs, Phantasy Star *sort of* still lives on as an MMO, but the single player entries in the series have long been dead, and even after five years, Sega has still refused to localize Phantasy Star Online 2 outside of Japan. And then we have two really depressing ones - Streets of Rage has been MIA even though Sega went out of its way to issue a takedown notice for a popular fan remake that was released in 2011, and Virtua Fighter, despite being pretty much the earliest 3D fighting franchise, hasn’t seen a real entry since 2006, and only exists as a cheap mobile game now. (I realize there are plenty of other franchises I’m leaving out here like Jet Set Radio, but I decided to limit my focus to games I’d played.)
In the aftermath of Sonic Mania’s release, there were a number of threads on NeoGAF (before GAF, well, imploded), speculating on what franchises should receive a “Mania” type resurrection. And if you’ve read up to this point, you can guess what my answer will be - damn near all of Sega’s old series could use this treatment. New versions of Shining Force and Panzer Dragoon that respect their legacy by emulating the style of their forefathers while introducing just enough new stuff to appeal to younger fans would absolutely make me lose my mind. But I feel that we’re unlikely to ever get a “Shining Mania” or “Panzer Dragoon Mania,” because the circumstances that brought us Sonic Mania are unique. Sonic has always had a robust fangame and ROM hacking community, and it was Christian Whitehead, one of those fan engineers, whose mobile port of Sonic CD just happened to be good enough to get Sega to hire him to port other Sonic games to phones. One thing led to another, and eventually Christian got tasked to take the lead in making Sonic Mania.  Sega’s other old franchises don’t inspire fans and homebrew projects in quite the same way, and even though Streets of Rage came close with that 2011 remake, Sega swooped in pretty fast to nuke that one from the net, and I don’t think they gave any of the former devs jobs. This is because Sega just doesn’t care about Streets of Rage, Ecco the Dolphin, or even Virtua Fighter as much as Sonic. The blue hedgehog is a long-term mascot who’s managed to survive oodles of so-so 3D games (like the new Sonic Forces) to still be popular 25+ years after his birth. He’s not seen as a risk to the conservative Sega of 2017. A new Oasis game, on the other hand, probably is, and why should Sega stretch their lessened in-house production studios on what might be criticized as a Zelda clone when they can instead make another proven thing - a new Sonic, or perhaps a Yakuza or Hatsune Mika spinoff? No, I think the only way some of these franchises could be resurrected is if the original devs manage to grab hold of the license and take to Kickstarter, as is the case with Shenmue 3, a rare success story in this day in age. (Emphasis on the word RARE…and I’d actually rather not call Shenmue 3 a total “success” until the game is out, to be honest.) Franchise decay isn’t unique to Sega. It’s an affliction present in many other production studios, from Square Enix (I miss you, Parasite Eve) to Capcom (the mobile Breath of Fire 6 does not count) to Konami (Contra, Suikoden, damn near everything). Even Nintendo, who have generally done a fine job at avoiding this by bringing Kid Icarus and 2D Metroid back from the dead, have seemingly gone out of their way to not make a new F-Zero game for an awfully long time. But Sega is definitely the king when it comes to the sheer number of oldies that could stand to be updated for a new generation, but won’t be. And Sega are also the only ones to tempt us with Sonic Mania, a game chock-full of easter eggs to old titles that also offers a template which would be PERFECT for something like Shinobi or Streets of Rage…but one that likely won’t be used. Because the magical Sega of yesteryear, the one that got Michael Jackson to fiddle with Sonic 3 and used to be oh so fresh and oh so cool, is not the Sega of today.  RIP, Shinobi, Ecco, Shining Force, Panzer Dragoon, Oasis, single player Phantasy Star, Streets of Rage and Virtua Fighter. Somewhere, in the same alternate universe that Sonic Mania manifested from, the Dreamcast did super well and all of you are on your tenth respective entries right now.
It’s a blast processing fever dream, but isn’t it a nice one? (Header Sonic Mania screenshot taken by me. All the other pics I jacked from Mobygames.)

30 Years of Genesis: Going 30 Years Playing No More Than 30 Minutes of Sonic
This summer marks the 30th anniversary of the launch of the Sega Genesis in North America. I had such a nostalgia trip reliving my memories of the GameBoy while crafting my recent GameBoy 30th Anniversary piece, that it only seemed fitting that Sega’s iconic 16-bit platform gets the same honors of recounting my memories with it. If you are looking for a more authoritative historical piece on it I recommend either Phoenix IV or Console Wars. The former is a strictly informative recounting of the history of the system while the latter is an entertaining retelling done in the form of a novel after days of interviews with everyone involved. The following are my own personal experiences of playing the Genesis over the past three decades.
I remember first encountering the Genesis while spending either Thanksgiving or Christmas 1991 over at my older sister and brother-in-law’s house. I was only eight at the time, and remember being perplexed at the black gaming box and the thought that there could somehow be other systems than the good ‘ol NES. I did not subscribe to any gaming magazines at this point and I think I was still about a year away from experiencing Sega’s deluge of combative commercials against the SNES. During that holiday season of ’91 I recalled playing the first Streets of Rage on the Genesis with my little brother nonstop the couple days we were there. I remember being blown away by how superior it was graphically to what I experienced with other NES brawlers before like Double Dragon. We only got up to the stage where we faced off against the dueling karate sisters who kept whooping us and neither my brother nor I had the skills at the time to get past. The next year or two the only times I recall playing the Genesis were at my sister’s for the holidays or the occasional store kiosk. I remember my brother-in-law picked up other games we played regularly like ToeJam & Earl, Buster Douglas Boxing, Toxic Crusaders and PGA Tour Golf. I dug all of them, especially ToeJam & Earl where I had no idea what was happening half the time with its unorthodox level structure and item pick-ups, but loving the co-op gameplay, stylish graphics and its funky beats at the time. Brief memories of store kiosk play from the early 90s consisted of being horrible at the original Sonic the Hedgehog because it was too fast for my childhood noggin’ to comprehend. I also recall being confused at early editions of Madden Football at store kiosks because when I would press buttons to hike the ball ‘Audible’ would appear on screen and then eight or nine-year old Dale had no idea what that meant compared to easier pick up and play NES pigskin games I was conditioned to.
Until Christmas of 1995 I probably played no more than about 10 Genesis games all together. I was more aware of the system by that time thanks to reading magazines more regularly at that point and hearing from classmates who had the system, but until that point I was pretty loyal to my NES still (I did not get a SNES until late ’96). For the Christmas season of ’95 my best friend at the time who coincidentally lived three blocks away from me, Rich, received a Genesis and that was when I got a lot more hands-on time with its extensive library of titles. Rich and I shared a lot of similar game interests which at that time was a ton of sports games, fighters and action/brawlers. For the next several months I was over at Rich’s for countless sleepovers and going nuts with fighters like Mortal Kombat II and Evander Holyfield’s Real Deal Boxing. Real Deal Boxing blew away Buster Douglas Boxing with more authentic boxing gameplay and an insanely thorough career mode where we would take a created boxer and move him up the ranks as champion until his skills gradually weakened with age to force his retirement. We absolutely ate up the sports games at that time. We played what seemed like an infinite amount of Madden NFL ‘97. A much wiser 13-year old Dale was no longer befuddled by the intricacies of Madden and we had so much fun with it. We would create many players to deck out our teams and keep running blitzes to try and injure the players because there was an intense bone-breaking injury sound effect that we ate up. It was like the equivalent of Favreau and Vaughn going nuts in Swingers when they made Gretzky bleed in NHLPA ‘93.
Mutant League Football was another favorite of ours that made that injury sound effect in Madden child’s play. EA also made MLF and it was the equivalent of NFL Blitz at the time with larger-than-life mutants and animals literally killing each other on the field with over-the-top hits. It was possible to force a team to retire due to killing off too many of its players which was always our desired objective! If you have not played its spiritual successor follow-up, Mutant Football League on PS4/XB1 I give it the highest of recommendations because it perfectly capture the sensation of the Genesis game while bringing it up to contemporary standards. We also played a lot of EA’s violent driving game, Road Rash II. Being able to race motorcycles and knock out your competition with chains and nightclubs while trying to evade the cops seemed revolutionary when playing it for the first time! We later discovered EA’s take of Road Rash on rollerblades in the awesome rollerblade stunt/racing game Skitchin’! Fun fact about Skitchin’ is that the competitors you race against have gnarly nicknames like ‘Thrasher’ and ‘Jackal’ and thus in ’96 was the origin of how I came up with what wound up as my online handle but at the time was my radical Skitchin’ username, ‘Gruel’ to blend in with the rest of the pack and have stuck with it all these years later!
After spending several months devouring a good dozen or so Genesis games with Rich, it did not compare to the summer of ’96 when Rich signed up for the Sega Channel! I remember it launched in 1994 and seeing commercials for it at the time where it seemed too good to be true where for about $15/month would net the user a Genesis cartridge that would connect to a cable line and get the Genesis online streaming access to a rotating 40-50 Genesis games a month. That is right, decades before services like OnLive and Playstation Now, the Genesis did streaming gaming back in ’94 and it worked like a charm! Check out this pristine archival footage of the menus to see how it all worked. Sega Channel essentially was what Xbox Game Pass is today, and I am surprised to hear how little it is discussed when people reminisce about the Genesis. We discovered so many new games this way and for that entire summer I was over at Rich’s about three to four days a week binging on Sega Channel games until Rich’s dad got on my case because I was over so often. I remember discovering new sports games on there like the innocuously titled Super Volleyball that we became somehow addicted to and the surprisingly awesome Tiny Toons ACME All-Stars that had its own killer spin on arcade basketball and soccer that it played like NBA Jam but filled with crazy Tiny Toons power-up attacks. Sega Channel is what additionally exposed me to co-op games like General Chaos, the Streets of Rage sequels and Gain Ground and classic single player games like Shadowrun, Comix Zone and Vectorman that Rich and I took turns trying to keep progressing through. Sega Channel also was my first exposure to the classic Bomberman franchise with many nail-biting rounds played of Mega Bomberman! It came as no surprise to me when I finally bought a Genesis a few years later in 1999 that the first games I hunted down for it were those same games I first discovered on the Sega Channel! In April of 1999 shortly after I turned 16 I got my first after-school job and after a few paychecks I went to Wal-Mart to determine what should be one of the first games to buy on my own! This was around the time when Majesco re-released the third, mini-sized Genesis model at a discount price of around $30. I was legit stunned at that price for a brand new system, even if it was for a ten-year old platform at that time I could not help but instantly snatched it up!
If you read my GameBoy special from several weeks back you will recall my lamenting over its lackluster wrestling games compared to the superior ones on the 16-bit platforms. On Genesis, Rich and I played way too much Royal Rumble on the system. Other wrestling games I picked up for the Genesis over the years was the inferior predecessor to Royal Rumble in Super Wrestlemania. While I had a blast with Rumble way back when, it regrettably does not hold up well all these years later with its over-reliance on a button mashing grapple meter that obliterated thumbs that I have no idea how I tolerated at the time. Saturday Night Slam Masters was a unique wrestling game from Capcom. It is essentially Street Fighter II in a wrestling ring, complete with victory taunts, Mike Haggar from Final Fight in its roster and even has a few wrestling moves sprinkled in! I loved how they had over-the-top laser light entrances and larger-than-life character sprites at the time, and I recall enjoying the Genesis version more than the SNES. There was nothing else like it since, and on occasion I will still throw it in every couple of years. I continue to hope one day Capcom will release its sequel, Ring of Destruction in a random collection of arcade games because it never got a home port all these years later.
Sports games ruled on the Genesis! Pictured from clockwise at top left is Holyfield's Real Deal Boxing, NHLPA '93, Super Volleyball and Tiny Toon ACME All-Stars I mentioned some of my favorite sports games for the system above, but it really needs to be emphasized how big sports games were on the Genesis. Both Sega and EA pumped out a seemingly endless line of sports titles for the system. I remember getting into silly speculation with Rich over how much extra memory that yellow tab on the EA carts allowed EA games to play better. For hoops titles I got my NBA Jam and Live fix on SNES, but on the ‘ol Genny my go-to basketball games were the oft-forgotten NCAA skinned version of Jam in College Hoops. I occasionally also threw in the hand-me-down street ball version of NBA Jam in Barkley Shut up Jam. I loved Madden, but Sega’s Joe Montana line of gridiron games were just a notch or two below too. For baseball, Sega’s World Series Baseball titles were in a league of its own when it came to gameplay and presentation with its larger-than-life hitter/batter perspective. For hockey EA’s NHL line was/is legendary! About four or five years ago my friend Derek gave me a ring to come over for some impromptu random gaming and he never played much Genesis before so when he got over I had the Genesis hooked up and laid out all my games for it and of that night we had the most fun playing a few rounds of NHL ‘94. At that point it was a 20-21 year old game and it still held up as one of the best hockey games of all time.
For brawlers I loved the Streets of Rage games, but I think it is my secret shame that I have yet to complete a single one. That must one day change! I did love the exclusive Genesis TMNT game, Hyperstone Heist! It was right up there with Turtles in Time and every couple of years my friend Matt and I make it a ritual to plow through that game. After many attempts we also conquered the Genesis port of the awesome arcade brawler, The Punisher! It does not have as friendly of a continue system as Hyperstone Heist so Matt and I had to learn to play a little more conservatively and not rely on mindless button mashing. It felt gratifying to have all that hard work pay off and beat The Punisher….until we got a copout ending screen of text saying ‘Now play like the Punisher and try hard difficulty.’ We did not, but I wound up looking up the ending several years later and at least Capcom made it worth your while because it had a far more intricate ending than many other brawlers at the time. The one Genesis brawler that always had our number was Captain America and the Avengers. It is a lot of fun to play, but it does not allow that many credits and by setting ourselves up with the max lives and continues that game was still a beast, and even playing conservatively and having so many attempts we only managed to make it to the final boss, The Red Skull, only once. Let us fast track to about a little under 10 years ago when a co-worker approached me about being interested in buying his Genesis/Sega CD/32X along with a couple dozen games. He was saving up to pay off his upcoming wedding and he gave me a list of everything he had along with prices for everything he wanted going by what he saw off eBay auctions. I did some price researching of my own and made him an offer of around $250-ish for the ‘tower of power’ and about 20 games combined for all three systems. Looking back I accidentally lucked out with that offer because it was only a couple years later when 8/16-bit prices on the used market took a huge jump. I never had a must-have desire for a Sega CD or 32X, but there were always a couple of games I wanted to play on them that I eventually hunted down. I liked the versions of WWF RAW, Doom, Virtua Racer and especially Virtual Fighter the most out of my dozen 32X games. I recall as a then 10 and 11 year old being disgusted by early polygonal console games like Star Fox and Virtua Racer and was more on board with FMV games being the future, but remember being a little taken aback by Virtua Fighter indicating that there may be something to these 3D polygons. The 32X version is a surprisingly faithful version to its arcade counterpart.
I need to dive into my SegaCD games more one of these months. I hunted down all the must own titles for it like the Working Design RPGs, Shining Force CD, enhanced versions of Amazing Spider-Man and Batman Returns and Snatcher which I hope to one day knock off my gaming bucket list. Regrettably now my only SegaCD games I invested a decent amount of time into are WWF Rage in the Cage (essentially Super Wrestlemania but with some FMVs and a bigger roster), Slam City with Scottie Pippen (a abysmal FMV-based street hoops title) and the underrated SegaCD exclusive brawler, Prime. I am a huge Ultraverse comic nut and I ate up Prime on SegaCD since it was the only game released featuring characters from that comic book line before Marvel acquired them and cancelled all their books within a couple years (yes, I am still bitter over it). It is only one player, but Matt and I spent a few attempts taking turns at beating levels until we finally vanquished it. We even had an attempt thwarted when Prime was loading the final boss battle when a flipping blackout halted our progress! As memorable as that moment is I will instead forever associate Prime with its unrivaled and unforgettable opening theme music (seriously….give it a listen!). I need to give a shoutout to the official handheld Genesis, aka the Nomad! My brother surprised the hell out of me one year with it for a birthday present. My favorite Nomad memory is my brother getting hyped for getting his own version of Genesis Shadowrun and I told him I would come over and bring my Nomad and my version while he played on his television and we could both start off our own new game and exchange tips and hints in a friendly rivalry type of way. I think my brother must have gotten the Genesis version of Shadowrun mixed up with the completely differently designed SNES version because he tried to run around aimlessly and gun down everything which is not how you want to play the Genesis version. We were planning that day out for weeks and I remember being stunned after about 15 minutes when I was starting to sink my teeth back into Shadowrun’s cyberpunk action-RPG brand of awesome when my brother out of nowhere went ‘screw this, let’s play something else!’
As I wind down I want to give many thanks to Sega for keeping the Genesis relevant throughout this century with its gratuitous re-releases of physical and digital collections. I have no idea why, but I keep on buying them for the convenience of having them for the latest system. It started with the Sega Smash Pack on DreamCast seeming like a killer value in 2001 for 12 games for $40. Then a few years later on PS2 I snatched up Sega Genesis Collection which seemed like an even better value with just over 30 games for $30! Then in the 360/PS3 era along came Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection which offered 40 games for $30!! Sega also sold a lot of the games ala carte via each console’s digital storefronts. Then last year we got Sega Genesis Classics on Xbox One/PS4 with 50 games for $30!!! The last several years Sega also has been licensing out to At Games to release their own pre-programmed Genesis mini console with dozens of pre-installed games. I held off on getting those after hearing how awful its emulation and shoddy production quality is, but after hearing how Sega finally decided to manufacture their own Genesis Mini themselves this fall and handed off the emulation duties to the acclaimed emulation studio M2, I could not pre-order fast enough! I have no idea why I keep deep diving down this well, but hats off to Sega for keeping me coming back again and again! Similarly with my GameBoy flashback piece, I had an unorthodox experience with the Genesis. I was not a hardcore Sonic or Phantasy Star player like the average Genesis owner. If you ask me any day of the week my answer to what my favorite Genesis game is, it could be either The Punisher, Madden NFL ‘97, Shadowrun, Hyperstone Heist, NHL ‘94 or Skitchin’. That is another thing that made the Genesis great was its mammoth library of diverse titles so there was no doubt something for everyone! With that I will put the kibosh on this look back of my favorite moments with the Genesis as I anxiously await for my pre-order of the Genesis Mini to arrive in a few months! Want more Genesis Love from me in Audio and quasi-video form? I was looking through my hard drive archives and a decade ago while I was still doing my videogame podcast, On Tap, we did a special 20th anniversary special on the Genesis where my co-hosts and I reminisce about the Genesis. I went ahead and uploaded it on YouTube so if you want even more Genesis takes then click here to give it a listen! Also recorded throughout 2009 from the On Tap archives was installments from our history of comic book videogames series. In this next episode I uploaded to YouTube is the second part of series where we breakdown every single comic book licensed game on the SNES and Genesis! My co-host Matt and I did thorough research for this episode and played almost nearly every single comic book game from this era in preparation for the episode to give the most up to date research and to see if these games (of which a vast majority are beat-em-ups) still hold up. Click here to give it a listen! My Other Gaming Flashbacks GameBoy 30th Anniversary

A Dragon Sized Adventure Chapter 25
Chapter 25: Interview with Slinkys
Crash's Universe, N Sanity Island, Crash's Home.
*KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK.*
*Brio has been knocking on the door for a few minutes.*
N. Brio: "I know we haven't been on the best of terms, but you can't just be ignoring me like this. Hmmm... perhaps their off fighting Cortex still?"
*He doesn't have much time to ponder when a portal opens behind him. Sonic pops out first, followed by Tails, Spyro, Cynder and all the others.*
N Brio thinks: *"Hmm, they don't look like mutants, yet they walk on two legs..."*
Sonic surveys the surroundings: "Well, at least Eggman went someplace tropical for once."
Knuckles: "It sure is. Reminds me of Angel Island's jungle a fair bit."
Big: "Looks like a wonderful place for fishing."
N Brio: *"And they talk too. They don't look like they belong to Cortex. And I wonder who is this 'Eggman'."* "Uh-oh." *They notice him.*
Shadow is the one who notices him first. "Hey... who is that guy?" *They approach him.*
Brio decides to play it cool since they don't know him. "I'm Doctor Nitrus Brio-"
Sonic interrupts. "Wait, DOCTOR? You mean like a scientist?"
N. Brio: "Yes-"
Sonic: "An Evil scientist?"
N. Brio: "Yes- I mean, no!" *But it was too late. Sonic had already plastered a foot on his big head.*
Sonic: "There! One less evil scientist to worry about- DOWCH!" *Amy hits him on the head with her hammer.*
Amy: "SONIC! Didn't you hear him? He then corrected himself."
*Brio starts getting angry and green and getting taller and bigger, but then he pulls out a beaker of green liquid and drinks it, returning to normal.*
Sonic: "What... the heck... was that...?"
N. Brio: "Sweet, lovely mutagen." *He regains his composure.* "Sorry about that. I need to control my anger, lest I turn into a monster."
Sonic: "Yeah, like the Incredible H-DOH!" *Amy smacks him with her hammer again.*
N. Brio: "No, he's right, it's apt. I won't lie, I was an evil scientist."
Sonic: "I knew it." *He shuts up as Amy readies her hammer again.*
Big: "Hmmm, but you don't hold that very well. You're too... meek. You would rather let others take your accomplishments."
Brio: "WHAT? NO!" *He gets more delusional by the second.* "I created the Evolvo-ray! I INVENTED SLINKYS! STOP PLAYING WITH THEM BECAUSE THEY'RE MINE. I INVENTED LIGHT-BRITE AND WROTE THE BIBLE!" *He turns into the Hulk when he says* "I! WAS! IN! THE! FIRST! GAME!" *He then drinks his mutagen, turning back to normal.*
Sonic: "Oh, great. He's a crazy scientist."
Big: "No... He's putting a façade. The only thing true in that is that he perfected the Evolvo-ray... whatever that is."
N. Brio shows his sanity again. "I see I didn't fool you, eh? You're right. I only perfected the Evolvo-ray, a device to evolve weaker creatures into super soldiers, for Dr Cortex. Now, HE is a evil scientist. He's the one who wants to take over the world."
Sonic: "Sounds just like Eggman if you ask me, wanting to take over the world."
Spyro: "What are you doing here any way? You don't look like you would normally visit here."
N. Brio: "You are correct, I do rarely visit the home of my- I mean, Cortex's creations, Crash Bandicoot, Coco, and Crunch. But I got an anonymous phone call telling me to go to the homes of the bandicoots. The caller was strange, very egotistical. And before we hung up, I swear I heard him laughing 'Bwah hah ha' and I thought I could also hear metal banging on metal in the background."
Shadow: "That sounds quite a lot like the Doctor and Metal Sonic."
N. Brio: "Oh! And sometimes, some robots would question what he was doing, only to get a 'Quiet nincombots!' in response."
Sonic: "Now that does sound like Eggman, he never compliments his robots at all."
N Brio: "So, that is who this Eggman is... Hmmm... I did sense an evil just like Dr. Cortex. Which reminds me, none of the bandicoots are here, which troubles me. I know that they can go off to fight Cortex, but he usually tells me about it. (He is Cortex's friend, no matter what.) But there was no call. Did the bandicoots finally fail?"
*The ground suddenly starts shaking.*
Sonic: "Whoa! Is this an earthquake?"
N. Brio: "No... RUN!"
*Everyone moves away from Crash's home towards the beach as thorns shoot up from the ground, missing them. On the beachfront, the water freezes with ice.*
Amy: "What's happening?"
N. Brio: "It's the mutants! They're attacking us! But why?!"
Sonic: "Mutants?"
*From the forest behind them, Spikes, Snipes and Magmadons rumble their way while from the water, Ratcicles and Eel-lectrics slither and slide out. They gang up on the heroes.*
Sonic: "Ooh! A challenge for once. I got this guys." *Sonic starts revving up in his ball form.*
N. Brio looks at the mutants and notices the new headsets on them. He tells Sonic "Sonic! Aim for their heads! Destroy those headsets!"
Sonic: "Got it!" Sonic uses his Light Speed Attack to decimate all the headsets with no trouble at all. They shatter and fall to the ground.
*The mutants go from their crazed state to a more relaxed state, stepping away from the heroes. But before any celebrating can occur, Crunch, with Crash riding him, comes in. Crunch points his arm gun at the heroes.*
Sonic: "Ah, two more want to meet my speed, huh?" *Sonic starts revving up again but Brio stops him.*
N. Brio: "No, wait! That's Crash and Crunch... but they're different."
Big: "They appear to be under mind control. But whoever did this didn't do a very good job on controlling them. Hmmm..."
*He performs a thunderous clap, awakening Crash and Crunch from their mind control. Crunch drops his gun arm and Crash accidently loses his balance and falls onto the ground.*
*Sonic can't help but chuckle at Crash's fall. Then Amy proceed to whack him over the head with her hammer again.*
Crunch: "Oh, my... what happened? Why are we back home?"
Tails: "You guys were hypnotized into trying to attacking us."
Crunch: "What, you little critters? (Crunch is about taller than OMEGA) Darn it, it was that Cortex and the rotund dude."
Sonic: "Rotund dude? Did he wear a red suit and black pants and shoes?"
Crunch: "Why, yes! He trapped us in cages. He said his name was Eggman or something."
Sonic: "Yep, that's Eggman all right."
Crunch: "Then Cortex took us to his Evolvo-ray and then evolved us to look like this. After that, it's all blank for a few days, save for a command to attack a blue hedgehog and his friends just recently."
Crash has gained more than enough brain cells to speak, but all he says is "New Evolvo-ray!" before silencing himself again, as though he rather not speak.
N. Brio: "WHAT! He made a new Evolvo-ray without me?! That does it! Follow me, I'm taking you guys to wherever Cortex is."
*N. Brio jumps into the nearby rubble of what was the old Space Head (From Mind Over Mutants). The others jump in as the Space Head starts working again. N. Brio can be heard saying "Found you!" as they reach the room N. Brio is in.*
N. Brio: "Hop on this teleporter here, it's going to take you were Cortex and this Eggman is."
Crunch: "Why should we trust you? You're not exactly a good guy."
N. Brio: "Yes, I know. But you should also know I am angry that he has thrown out the old Evolvo-ray. I'm done not taking credit! GET ON AND KICK HIS ASS!"
*Not wanting to make Brio go Hulk on them again, they get on and are sent to the Space Egg's / Death Head's lowest levels.*

Convention Review: 8-Bit Coference
https://8bitconference.com/
Tumblr media
I had the pleasure of attending my first video game convention this weekend, and I'm happy to report it was a fantastic experience from start to finish.
8-Bit Gaming Conference took place on the 28th and 29th of July 2018 at Griffith College, Dublin. This is the second year of the conference and the organizers should give themselves a pat on the back for a job well done. I only managed to get to the Saturday event, but I soaked up enough throughout the day to come back satisfied, but it left me wanting more!
8-Bit is the brainchild of Graeme Moore, and with the help from dedicated volunteers and the staff of Griffith College, the event went extremely smoothly and was great fun for all ages. On site were security personnel, a fire marshal, along with first aid attendants.  The event was backed by a multitude of sponsors, such as AllCast Irish Gamers, The National Computer & Video Game Museum, The R.A.G.E, Four Star Pizza, The Guild of Nerds and Republic of Gaming, to name but a few. The entire list can be found on the events Facebook page (link at bottom). Many of these partners set up as vendors or donated to the conference in one way or another.  8-Bit conference 2018 was in aid of Inner City Helping Homeless.
Tumblr media
General admission started at 10am, but early entry was granted to people with special needs at 9am, and there was also a quiet room on-site for people who needed it. Beanbag chairs were kindly donated by the crowd at Beanbags.ie.
My first trip in (after a coffee in Arthurs Cafe), was to the room set up by the National Computer and Video Game Museum. The room was filled with arcade machines supplied by Mini Arcade Systems, and the Museum had a choice selection of video game memorabilia and retro video games. I was more than over the moon to see boxed copies of Final Fantasy IV, Super Mario 3, and Sonic The Hedgehog.
Mini Arcade Systems supply a retro bartop console arcade, complete with tonnes of old 8 and 16bit titles. I had a go playing the original Shinobi game, which was an absolute blast. I would have stayed longer, but I knew I'd never get to leave.
The next room was a mixture of retro consoles, featuring a Dreamcast, Playstation1, SNES, and more. It was like a trip through time. Most impressive of all was a Gameboy hooked up to a massive LCD TV. Playing Tetris in HD never felt so good. The Gameboy was also modified to be used with an SNES controller. It definitely made for a great gaming experience. Super Smash Bro's was also on the go on GameCube, along with House of The Dead on Dreamcast.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the PS1 didn't feel like working which was a let down. I'm a huge Playstation fan and it was a shame this particular Playstation wasn't working. There were other Playstations on-site, but it's a shame how one faulty system managed to make it's way through.
After a quick go of Street Fighter II on the SNES, I went upstairs to the main conference room. As I ascended, I was greeted by some familiar 8-Bit music playing through a PA system, along with a huge Mario Kart flag draped around the stairway.
When I entered the main room, I didn't know where to look first, it was my idea of heaven. Game Vendors as far as the eye could see. People gaming, people dressed up in Cosplay, and it was only 11am at this point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After doing a lap of the floor, I seen a few familiar faces. The Guild of Nerds were hosting a Cosplay competition later on in the day, and had prints of different Cosplayers for sale. The Irish Chapter of the 501st Star Wars club were out in Force (pun definitely intended), and the RAGE (Record Art Game Emporium) had also set up a stall in the room, along with generously setting up a SNES for people to come along and play some games.  The Ghostbusters were also on call for any ghostly problems that might occur throughout the day, just to be on the safe side!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A row of tables had been set up for some casual gaming, Destruction Derby 2 and Rayman 2 were on PS1, an emulation of Streets of Rage was on the Wii, Ninja Gaiden was being played on Xbox. Tekken 5 matches were taking place on PS2, and Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time was on Gamecube. People were also on the Dreamcast having a few games of Crazy Taxi. A couple of Laptops were also set up with Wolfenstein 3D for those old school FPS fans, Quake 2, and Worms. It wasn't just games of yore however, Gamevan.ie had set up a few consoles with Fortnite on the go, along with having a vendors booth. I had my fair share of games at the retro table before heading off to do a little bit of shopping.
Tumblr media
Rewind Retro Gaming and Retro Ralph sorted me out with some fantastic PS1 titles to ad to my collection. The games were all in fantastic quality along with being extremely cheap in price. I helped myself to a few games (and came back for seconds). Word of advice for people interested in coming to 8-Bit, I couldn't find an ATM machine on campus so come prepared.
I wandered over to Like The Bog Flower Designs and Beanies Art Mart who both had a fantastic selection of homemade figurines, stickers, badges, T-shirts and prints.
As the day went on, I took part in the Tekken 3 tournament, after days and days of training, I got my ass absolutely handed to me by Eddy Gordo, not the most graceful of losses, but it was a great bit of fun for all involved. Other tournaments were Mario Kart, Street Fighter, and Super Smash Bros.
One of the spectacles of the day was a 10-player Bomberman game being played up on the big screen in the main room. This was headed up by the lads at AllCast Irish Gamers, who were also the MC for most of the events throughout the conference. These lads know how to work a crowd and kept everyone entertained until the end.
Tumblr media
I was in attendance for a few events on the main stage, the first of which being a panel of gamers discussing all things retro. It was interesting to hear other people's ideas about the way retro games are perceived by a modern audience, and do they still hold up as much today as they did when they were first released. They also held a relatively retro quiz which was a good laugh to see go down.
Ansonix was on the music side of entertainment for the day and kicked things off by performing his cover of the Streets of Rage theme song, before playing some of his own original works. I really dig this kind of 8-Bit style and I think Ansonix is someone we're going to be hearing a lot more of in the future. You can check out his music for free over at https://ansonix.bandcamp.com/.
I grabbed a Slushee from the Candy Pop Man and took a seat in time for the cosplay competition, headed up by the Guild of Nerds. Nate ó Cadhla was the MC for the competition, and there was a panel of cosplaying judges; Jichiie, Shonarrrrrgh, and Twin Tails Cosplay. Some of the Cosplayers really put in a lot of love and effort to both their costumes and their cosplay persona. A particual favourite of mine was Deadpool, who I tried to wind up by calling him Deathstroke (he wasn't too happy  about that)…. The Cosplay competition was short and sweet, with the victor being Totoro (from the Studio Ghibli film My Neighbour Totoro).
The day wound down with the tournament winners competing on the big screen.
My only regret about 8-Bit Conference 2018 was not being able to hang around long enough to enjoy the entire weekend. I feel like I missed out on so much even though I was there for most of the Saturday. Next year I'll make sure to be in attendance for the whole weekend so I don't miss out on the fun. Graeme, and all of team 8-Bit should be really proud that they put on such a fantastic event that catered to the retro needs of veteran gamers, but was also a fun and insightful look for the younger generation.
My advice for people who would like to attend the conference in future:
Plan your route, Griffith college is located just outside of Dublin City and isn't a central location
Bring money, as there is no ATM on-campus
Most importantly, take part and have fun, you can sit here and read this review all you like, but trust me when I say, you need to be there to get the best out of it.

Final Fantasy 4 Radio Show! Casting!
Now casting for Season One of the Final Fantasy 4 Radio Show! Final Fantasy IV (known as Final Fantasy II in the U.S.) was a video game originally published by SquareSoft for the SNES in 1991. It has since been re-mastered and re-made multiple times for multiple systems and now we are creating an unofficial radio adaptation of the classic story of sword and sorcery. The game follows Cecil, a dark knight, who begins to question his king's motives, which sets off a chain of events that leads him on the path to righteousness. Along the way he and his friends discover an ancient forgotten history of their planet (and beyond!). Season One (6 episodes) follows the story of FF4 up to, and including, Cecil's climactic transformation into a paladin. Season Two will see the heroes valiant efforts to stop Golbez turn deadly. Season Three will follow their time in the underworld of the dwarves. And, finally, Season Four will reveal the secret of the crystals as well as Cecil and Golbez's tragic shared past before culminating in a battle for the fate of the world that you will not want to miss! This is a FULL RE-SCRIPT of Final Fantasy 4 into radio play format, and will be published on YouTube and as a Podcast on iTunes (fingers crossed). I'm taking full artistic license with the plot, characters, and dialog; pulling from every different version of the game. It is still very much FF4, but delivers a fresh, exciting new adaptation! using the format: AUDITIONS ARE OPEN UNTIL WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1st  Send your audio files (one file per character) to [email protected] using any standard audio format Listen to the PILOT EPISODE or take a look at my previous project, The FINAL FANTASY 6 FANDUB To contact me directly with any questions email ff4radioshow(at)hotmail.com *The actors for Cecil and Rosa are continuing their wonderful work from the Pilot episode. Apologies to anyone hankering for those roles. *A NOTE ON ACCENTS* I love accents! I want you to try any accent you believe you can do well consistently or you believe fits the character. BUT be warned that I am a HARSH CRITIC of sub-par accent work. No Dick Van Dyke nonsense. OPEN ROLES NARRATOR Male/Female, Ageless Delivers an intro and outro for each episode. Warm, pleasant voice tone.  Able to project excitement and generate interest in the show to come. Audition Lines: Quote:This is a tale of far away and long ago... A time when knights and kings gripped the world with fists of iron and steel! A world where magic and technology clash together in awesome competition for power! This is The Final Fantasy Four Radio Show! Quote:The airships of the mighty Red Wings from the Kingdom of Baron race across the sky on their way home after a successful mission in the mystical country of Mysidia. The crew look forward to their return to hearth and home, but one man, their Captain, Cecil the Dark Knight, casts his gaze backward... --- EXTRAS! Male/Female, Varied Ages Crew of Red Wings (x3), Merchant, Baron Soldiers (x2), Cap'n, Chancellor, Sailors Nine varied background roles. Nine chances to try out your crazy voices! THESE ROLES ARE VERY IMPORTANT! I love to have a bouquet of extras available just in case. Please audition here if you are unsure of which role to try for! Audition Lines: Quote:Hey! How's it going? You doin' anything later today? Quote:Y'arr. Fifteen souls went ashore that day. An' only ol' Flint himself sailed away.  Quote:Bilbo Baggins was a hobbit who wanted to be left alone in quiet comfort. But the wizard Gandalf came along with a band of homeless dwarves. Soon Bilbo was drawn into their quest, facing evil orcs, savage wolves, giant spiders, and worse, unknown dangers. Finally, it was Bilbo -- alone and unaided -- who had to confront the great dragon Smaug, the terror of an entire countryside... --- BAIGAN Male, age 20-40 Baigan does not care about you.  Baigan only cares about Baigan. Sarcastic and apathetic. A drawling, sneering, douchey voice. This character may return in Season 2. Audition Line: Quote:Hmph, isn't killing what you do? You are a Dark Knight after all, Cecil. I didn't think you could still feel pity. --- KING BARON Male, age 40+ King of the country of Baron. Regal and imposing. He has a secret plan for which he is gathering the world’s Crystals. This character will return in Season 2. Audition Lines: Quote:Ah! Cecil! The Kingdom of Baron hails your return! We trust you have the Crystal? Quote:If the state of the Red Wings so concerns you, Dragoon, that you would eavesdrop on the Royal Chamber, then you may join him in his penance. Take the ring! And do not enter Our sight again until it is done!  --- KAIN HIGHWIND Male/Female, age 18-30 Cecil’s closest friend. A sporty sort of person who enjoys fighting for it’s own sake, rather than for any cause or loyalty. Kain was abandoned as a child and now clings to Cecil and Rosa. Perhaps Kain clings a little too closely though, and wishes for things to always stay just as they are between them. Kain has noticed Rosa’s affection for Cecil and is beginning to grow jealous. Voice type: Athletic and yet also oddly indolent. Think Jaleel White's Sonic the Hedgehog, or Ashleigh Ball's Rainbow Dash I would prefer to cast this role female to balance out the skewed gender ratio of the original story, but am accepting male voiced auditions. Audition Lines: Quote:Majesty! I petition on Cecil's behalf. Please reconsider! He has done no wrong, he questions out of care for his subordinates. He meant no disrespect, I assure you! Quote:Ahh, I woulda come with you anyway. Slaying monsters is right up my alley! Anyhow, the King'll relax as soon as we finish his "mission of contrition". We are his favorites. --- CID POLLENDINA Male, age 30-50 A rough, tough, jolly sort of fellow. Cid takes life as it comes and is enthusiastic about everything he does, damn the consequences!  He has a daughter whom he is very proud of but not very close to. Cid is always working on airships and other mechanical inventions. Cid's voice should feel bombastic and loud (without actually clipping out, plz!) Think Brian Blessed or perhaps John Lithgow. Audition Lines: Quote:What's the matter, kiddo? You and your goons better not have wrecked up my airships! Quote:The King's been acting mighty peculiar. You know, the other day he asked me if I could design an airship that can torch an entire city? I mean, obviously I could! But... makes me wonder if Baron will be going to war soon. --- MIST DRAGON Female, age 20-40 A mysterious dragon made of living mist. And also Rydia’s mother. The strongest of the valley’s summoners and it’s chief protector. One time, Non-recurring role Audition Line Quote:Leave at once and no harm will come to you. We will not allow further trespass. --- RYDIA  Female, age Child/Teen A young child just beginning to learn the way of the world and find her incredible strength in summoning and taming beasts. Rydia has a kind heart and has been taught to never kill or injure. She is able to sense the feelings that others carry, even if they are not aware of it themselves.  Rydia will be aging for season 2 to teen age. Priority may be given to actors able to play both ages. Voice Type: Childish but not immature. Sounds like 10-14 years old. Audition Lines: Quote:Mother! Get up! Please! The fire- *gasp!* Quote:He kills everything. Do you think... can I help him? Or is it too late? Quote:I'm coming with you! You'll need all the help you can get to tame that creature! --- DOCTOR Male/Female, ageless  A blustering medic. Will talk anyone’s ear off if given half a chance but has a kind heart and a charitable streak a mile wide. *First season role only Audition Line: Quote:Oh, you poor lamb. What has happened? Oh, but, no. You needn't say if you don't wish to. Lost your parents. I'm sure, I'm sure. Tragedy! Oh cruelty! But let's just look at you! All worn and filthy from traveling. The earthquake, no doubt? Thought we might see a few come through here, I did. But you're the first. And such a dear young thing! --- TELLAH Male, age 40-80 World renowned sage of the mystical, magical arts. Tellah settled in the desert to raise his daughter, Anna, and to meditate on the mysteries of the shifting sands. Tellah has lived by his own code for a very long time and believes wholly in his own judgement. Stubborn to a fault, Tellah’s strength is his greatest weakness. Voice Type: Cranky old guy, slightly reedy or nasal. Audition Lines: Quote:You there, Knight! Did I hear that right? You aim to clear the waterway to Damcyan? I beg you, let me come with you! I have tried to get through the waterway alone to no avail. The beast is strong. Strong, I warn you! But perhaps the three of us together... Quote:It is vicious. A writhing mass of tentacles and malice. And I am too old now to face it alone. Once, perhaps... But I fear something else may be waiting for us. I sense a darkness beyond. A doom yet clouded in the fog of the future... Quote:Stay and weep if you must! Do what you will; I don't care! Anna will be avenged. You keep your nose out of it! This death will be mine alone. --- EDWARD CHRIS VON MUIR Male/Female, age 18-30 The prince of the country of Damcyan and husband of Anna. A highly skilled musician and a born diplomat. Edward believes that any disagreement can be solved with communication. He detests violence. I would like to cast this with a female/feminine voice but keep Edward as a male role. Audition Lines: Quote:You're right. I'm nothing but a coward, just as you say. I only wanted him to leave. Leave us in peace. My Anna... and me... Quote:Put your sword away! There has been enough death today. Antlions are docile creatures. I shall get you your pearl. You stay here. Quote:Anna... what can I do now that you are gone? Everything is lost. Our kingdom is fallen, and I... I could do nothing. I still can do nothing. You loved to hear me sing and play but what good are they? What good is music in a world falling apart!? --- ANNA Female, age 18-30 Tellah’s daughter and wife of Edward. Anna is just as headstrong as her father and has eloped with Edward. A powerful magic-user, but not strong enough to stand against Golbez. Audition Line: Quote:Father! Stop it! ... just stop. There's... nothing you can do. Edward is... my husband... I love him... --- YANG FANG LEIDEN Male, age 20-50 Master of the monks of Fabul. Yang is highly disciplined Despite this, he is a humble man, and so does not bask in his glory, but rather tries his best to be respectful. Voice type: A deep, gentle, calming voice.  Audition Lines: Quote:I was lucky. We are all lucky. Most of their force already left, certain of victory. My comrades... we were ambushed. Drawn out onto the mountain by a decoy. Quote:Had enough of my friend's sword? Then perhaps you'd like to try my fists!? Hy-aahh! --- GOLBEZ Male, ageless Unknowable master of darkness. Golbez is the Dark Knight who replaces Cecil in the Red Wings. Little is known about him, but he shows a callous disdain for life and only a grudging respect for power. Golbez hides a terrible secret in his past. Voice Type: Deep and scary. Vader-esque. Audition Lines: Quote:Hmm? Ah. You must be Cecil. My predecessor in the Red Wings. Enough. I did not come to gabble with insects. Kain! Take the crystal. Quote:Ask not the eagle how he soars, little prince. My motives are beyond your ken. Quote:Fighting? This is no fight. I am simply collecting crystals. You are the ones who insist on throwing yourselves in my path. --- YIN  Female, age 20-50 Wife of Yang. (AKA Sheila, Ursula) Not much is known about Yin. She is fiercely protective of her husband and home. Audition Line: Quote:Soon after you left the sentries spotted those airships coming in from the west. The King ordered the city to evacuate. But I stayed put! None of those Baron thugs are going to touch MY house. --- "KING" FABUL Male/Female, ageless Ruler of the country of Fabul. All the more regal for their humility. Can be "Queen" or "King". Could be a child ruler or an aged monarch. Audition Line: Quote:Yes, we have been informed of the situation. And I must apologize to you, Master Yang. I unwisely sent your monks to their doom in the mountains, and shamefully fled when the airships appeared. --- PALOM Male, age Child/Teen An apprentice Black Mage from the land of Mysidia. Though young, Palom has proven himself a skillful, if arrogant, student of magic. He is a casual show-off, even to adults, and refers to himself as "The Mysidian Genius" or "Prodigy".  Audition Lines: Quote:Watch it, buddy! You're talkin' to the most powerful dark wizard in the whole world! Quote:Some people say that a monster from the depths of night resides at the summit. Others say there's nothing there. Like, it's a metaphor or something. Like, the whole time, YOU were the obstacle. --- POROM Female, age Child/Teen An apprentice White Mage from the land of Mysidia. Mature for her age, Porom is already an accomplished spellcaster. She is respectful and polite, and often has to keep Palom in line. She loves her brother and supports his quest to become a Sage, but believes he lacks the discipline. Audition Lines: Quote:Perhaps you were unaware, sir. I just so happen to be one of the most puissant white witches in the world. Quote:Well, I WAS just gonna lead him quietly into a cell in the tower. But you're right, Palom, yelling and making a scene is a much more sensible option! --- ELDER OF MYSIDIA Male/Female, age 40+ A leader of the town of Mysidia. Unusually long-sighted and kind. They are Porom & Palom’s teacher and an old friend of Tellah. Audition Line: Quote:Escort this man to the summit of Mount Ordeals. I see a dim star shining in the once-dark night sky... this will be a test for all of you. --- SCARMIGLIONE Male/Female, ageless The archfiend of Earth and appointed guardian of Mt Ordeals. It is an undead monster which Golbez has set to keep Cecil out of the summit cavern.  Audition Line: Quote:I am the gaoler of this forsssaken peak. Golbez set me here and now I have company at lassssst. Come! I shallll pulllll you into my embrace. --- KLUYA Male, 30+ A mysterious reflection in the summit cavern? Or something more? He is only a dim, echoing voice now.  Audition Line: Quote:I have waited for you for an age, it seems. And yet our meeting has come too soon, for now I must do as I have been dreading. The time is come! Hold your sword of darkness to the light!   FF4moonLogo3.png (Size: 366.21 KB / Downloads: 0) http://dlvr.it/PvCr4m www.voiceacting.space
