ive had this bouncing around in my head for a while, so here we are.
i am a sucker for pretty boys with kind brown eyes and jaime fits that description perfectly...so i decided to give him a lot of pining (that is definitely reciprocated), he has to be a big brave boy and confess 🫶🏾 also, this is placed before the events in the movie !
inspired by
hanging out with jaime has always been very warm, cozy, comfortable. ever since you were children when you'd spend weekends riding your bikes around the neighborhood, only to crash at one of your houses after having way too much food. it happened so frequently that it got to the point where it just was the new normal for both of your families (impromptu get togethers were very common).
the friendship you guys had only grown stronger with each year that passed and well- there were definitely feelings there that weren't strictly platonic now. you were trying your hardest to push them away though, and jaime was having the same issues...however neither of you dared to even threathen the sanctity of the bond shared by confessing. that is until one summer came along, you guys had gone to different universities, and even though you called and texted daily, summer was when you guys could actually hang out like the old days. and here you were, having gone to pick up jaime from the airport with the rest of the reyes. as he walked through the gate you let his family say their hellos first- it's safe to say he almost drowned in hugs and kisses, and when you finally got to say hello you didn't hold back with the bear hug either.
you missed him dearly, and the weird feeling of anxiety, excitement and happiness settled in your stomach as he squeezed you back and actually just fully picking you up. it made the feeling in your stomach even stronger.
"JAIME DIOS MÍO BÁJAME"
"Que no, don't wanna"
"okay so if that's how this is gonna go, cárgame bien, señor"
suddenly you guys were in your own world, talking and laughing and everyone could clearly see what was happening here. milagro was gonna have a field day with the teasing as soon as she had a chance. he ended up putting you down- but only after he carried you all the way to the car. it was embarrassing yes, but now as embarrassing as the older couple that chuckled as you walked past and talked to themselves in hushed voices about 'how sweet young love is' and how they wished they could go back in time and experience it all over again.
that got you both blushing...and made the drive back home for lunch a bit...strange. nothing really changed, you still sat together and chatted, but jaime couldn't stop thinking about what they had said. did you guys actually look like a couple? should he had said something to them? the fact that he didn't mind if they thought so made him feel warm and fuzzy.
two weeks pass, and while you've somehow managed to push away those fuzzy feelings, things have definitely flipped for jaime- and milagro did not help one bit. she woke up much earlier than he did, you did too, and it usually meant that as soon as he walked out into the kitchen he'd see you just having breakfast.
"buenas morning" you say, trying not to laugh cause his hair looked bonkers, but even if you found it hilarious, it was still endearing, and the fuzzy feelings you had to fight every single day before meeting him were back and they were looking for vengeance. and when he almost put his full body weight on top of you for a hug not caring that you were in the middle of eating? well, you felt like you were going to die. "mornin...." he didn't move off. "jaime." "Hmmm?" "get off of me and go shower, tenemos que encontrarnos con el grupo in like an hour". with one last, extremely dramatic sigh, he moves off and does as told. it's not like he didn't want to spend the day with you and some of your other friends, they were his friends too, but he would much rather stay in and chill.
not even two hours later and you guys are at the little picnic area everyone agreed to meet up at, playing silly games, chatting and just catching up! and jaime just wasn't feeling it, he couldn't really pinpoint the reason why until he sees how talkative and close you are with one of the guys there. okay. that's fine. it's just a hangout, nothing is happening, you definitely aren't flirting with him. thank god someone called the guy over cause he didn't know how much he could take.
"so how'd the flirting go?" he thought he sounded casual, calm, normal. he did not sound casual, calm or normal. he sounded upset and looked like a sad dog. "what flirting- what the hell happened to you? why do you look so sad? ¿qué pasó?" "hm? nothing." he shook his head, making you squint. okay, if he didn't want to tell you, then you'd just come up with absurd reasons as to why he would be upset. "¿tas celoso?" funny how you got it right first try. you don't know that, though. "what? no- ¿qué?" he prays to god the blush creeping up his neck isn't noticeable, prays it doesn't betray him. "Ayyyyy si es eso you don't have to be, tu sabes que you're irreplaceable" you laugh and god is definitely on his side cause you're called over a few second later by someone of the order people and he can feel his heart beating so fast he fears its gonna burst through his chest.
the hangout went by smoothly, he genuinely couldn't be happier, even if at first he didn't want to be there. he has to admit, he did miss his friends, so he's glad he could spend some time with them. now you guys are laying on his bed, chismeando and just debriefing when the topic of him being "jelous" came up again. maybe he could just do it. he knew it was risky, but....he was willing to take the chance. "....you know what? maybe i was. maybe i was very jelous, maybe i still kind-of am." he felt you sitting up and all he could do was pull a pillow over his face and keep this shit rolling "you've always made me feel so comfortable and...warm, and ive always loved you, but at some point i think it turned into love...? does that make sense- no- it's fine- okay- look i just- de verdad que me gustas mucho y pues no sé- i don't wanna fuck this up aunque creo que ya lo jodí-" he huffs and sits up to face you, looking embarrassed and flustered "you're so special to me and i really don't want to mess up the friendship we have, okay? but i'd just...i'd really like to be yours."
you aren't sure if you should just kiss him or shake him by the shoulders. so you settle for taking his hand in yours, feeling your face grow warmer- if that's even possible after that confession. "jaime, look at me." that boy is holding onto the pillow for dear life, using it to still obscure his face while he shakes his head. he's trembling. you use your other hand to grab his face and look at you "please, just kiss me" "really?" "si-" and he does, like he's been starving. he almost doesn't let you pull back even though you both need to breathe. "jaime mi amor, you will always be my favorite pretty boy and im so happy i can finally tell you."

If emilia had known all the manipulative and deceitful shit that echidna did to subaru in greed If and how fucked up subaru became under her influence, and how much Echidna despised everything about her and saw her as a useless, annoying naive doll, and eventually found out that Echidna was in fact so greedy and inhuman, do you think she would have changed her mind about Echidna and started to wary and disgusted by her? (Plus the talk of Beatrice waiting 400 years in Arc 4's Dream Castle would probably add fuel to the fire)
YES. absolutely. yes. itd be barely even a question, of course emilia would be wary of echidna and disgusted by echidnas actions if she (emilia) ever found this out. but im gonna explain why i think this🙏
we see some major instances of emilia standing up for herself—the biggest examples include her post arc 4 development, also her being mad about subaru calling her satella in arc 1, her arc 3 speech to the royal council (that was sadly glossed over in the anime but you can see it in the manga and its SUPER badass) and also her arc 3 fallout with subaru, etc etc. but the ones where she has more of a negative reaction, ie the arc 1 example and the arc 3 fallout with subaru—are particularly interesting to me.
the arc 1 example shows her standing up for herself with something that was done to her directly. subaru called her satella in public when shes already out there showing her face and being judged as she always is, but people arent usually so bold as to directly call her satella. its why she gets pissed—its a very personal insult, and its one that shes had to deal with for almost her entire life due to more factors out of her control (which is a reoccurring theme with her—shes rarely fully in control of many things in her life). this also is you know one of the examples where she DOES stand up for herself!!
but regarding the arc 3 fallout—yes, of course shes upset that subaru humiliated her at the royal selection when shes already bound to have a hard time because shes a half elf. of course shes upset that subaru broke his promise (especially when you remember her trauma with that), and of course shes upset because subaru absolutely looks like a massive liar right now (especially when you remember her trauma with that) and again, didnt keep his promise. but its interesting to note that emilia has this huge guilt complex regarding people being hurt because of her in some way (which isnt her fault at ALL but thats how it feels to her and this is how its often justified by perpetrators in universe!!). puck even tells her in memory snow that subaru keeps getting hurt because of her because puck is a shit father. so yes, emilia is upset that subarus hurt her, but so much of her dialogue in their arc 3 fallout is about how subaru got hurt because of her, and how she doesnt want subaru to be hurt anymore. a big part of why she leaves subaru then is because of that!! she was personally hurt, her trauma has been triggered by this too, shes been publicly humiliated on a deep level when shes already bound to struggle in the selection, and yet shes thinking more about subaru in this instance. that says so much about her.
and once you get to post arc 4 emilia in general—this is an emilia who is grown and is still struggling with her deepest insecurities but shes finally started to face them head on. of course shes gonna feel disgusted by what echidna did to subaru (and beatrice!!) if she ever found out—subaru and beatrice are very dear to emilia, and theyre the two people emilia is closest with thatve been affected by echidna the most.
i just think that on the scale of things echidna has done, emilia would care the least about how echidna feels about her specifically. not in the sense that emilia wouldnt care, because she does. she cares deeply about what others think of her and she always tries to be kind and nice and proper. she always tries to prove herself to others because she always has something to prove. shes the half devil, and shes someone whos often overshadowed both in universe and narratively.
echidnas feelings on her are only unique in its intensity and mystery—we see echidnas face scrunch up and she looks and sounds like shes going to cry when she admits in the anime that she hates emilia. we dont know why, only that this is the one and Only time we echidna with such negative emotions of this caliber? but echidna is probably far from the only person in the world to hate emilia and see her as useless and annoying and naive. and echidna is most definitely not the only person to hate emilia in the first place for various reasons.
emilia is extremely aware of just how many people despise her. how could she not when its connected to her appearance and existence? shes reminded of that like 90% of the time she steps outside. or when she thinks about other demihumans or about the fate of her own people. would it still sting for emilia to learn about the full depth of echidnas hatred? yeah, because like i said, echidna really has a personal vendetta against emilia, and also because this is all poking and prodding at the same core insecurities emilia has—that emilia is and will always be some useless doll thats paraded around. would it make emilia a little wary because echidna has a personal grudge? yes. of course. when theres a threat to emilia herself personally, that tends to extend for other people (such as her camp), so she unfortunately has to think about that. and of course emilia would probably also be wondering Why its so personal for echidna.
but emilia will IMMEDIATELY fixate more on the fact that echidna deeply hurt beatrice and subaru.
emilia is someone whos hated by the world, someone whos near constantly targeted unfairly in various ways—but she continually chooses to try and be kind and try to keep her courage and try to do the right thing even as shes completely terrified. shes deeply scared to hurt others due to her traumas and Various Experiences. she may not be entirely certain what love is, but she has felt it numerous times and loves her loved ones a lot. she cant fathom someone like echidna, who locked her own daughter in the library to wait for a person who isnt real just so echidna could watch and see what happens. echidna used her own daughter like some sick twisted lab experiment, and emilia would be even more deeply uncomfortable when you remember that she too was put in a princess room by her mother figure (which was well meaning and WAY different than beatrice of course, but im sure the room parallel would be Uncomfy anyway). and beatrice was waiting for 400 years too, emilias going to be so grief stricken and angry on beatrices behalf!!
and subaru's behalf too!! but let me go deeper into explaining greed if first.
when it comes to greed if, i dont like to entirely attribute everything to echidna here—mainly because i dont want to ignore subarus agency in all of this. subaru is the antithesis to someone like emilia or reinhard—subaru has infinite choices. hes choice itself. he can change in any direction and make whatever choices he wants and nothing can stop him once he sets his mind to something.
and greed if subaru continually makes decisions that makes him and everyone around him worse. he threatens felt and rom to leave the election to manipulate reinhard into joining him. he holds meili hostage in a cell to control elsa. characters like garfiel and ram understandably resent him for his manipulative bullshit. otto leaves because of it. emilia and beatrice’s mental health are completely and utterly destroyed because of his actions. yes, echidna is VERY MUCH to blame for how subaru ended up. he accepted her contract when he was vulnerable and at his lowest point, and now hes in this horribly toxic dependent relationship with her because shes the only one he can confide in. she helps him plan things, she helps him move things along. shes made him worse all this time, and while she plays a HUGE role in greed if for this reason, subaru continually makes the choice each and every single time to keep going down this path. he can try and turn around at any point, but he doesnt. hes a horrible person now, which i think should always be remembered in general for the vast majority of the ifs. he is a victim and a perpetrator at the same time. hes not innocent anymore—everyone is ultimately stuck under his control in greed if because he’ll just keep abusing rbd until he gets what he wants. no one whos near subaru has any free will here. echidna whispers in subarus ear and subaru chooses to listen to her and make more shit decisions.
is echidna guilty for essentially manipulating subaru into accepting her contract and becoming worse as a result? yes. is subaru guilty for doing all the things he did following accepting the contract? yes. these two things coexist. granted, i would still give echidna more of the responsibility for greed if of course, i just don't want to ignore what subarus been doing either hah.
but basically emilia finding out about all of this gets extremely complicated Very Fast.
to find out the full extent of the shit echidna does to subaru in greed if, emilia would have to know about rbd. and emilia finding out rbd is a whole other complicated subject on its own, but long story short, her guilt complex regarding hurting other people is gonna really FLARE UP. her worst fears have basically been confirmed with the existence of rbd because subaru has chosen time and time again to be involved with her, and being involved with her unfortunately means that he gets caught in the crossfire of ALL the things that keep trying to hurt emilia (which again isnt her fault and she has no control over any of this happening). so theres the double whammy of 1. emilia finds out rbd and 2. emilia finds out about greed if which brings whole other layer to this.
emilia is inevitably going to be horribly horribly guilty and In Despair over rbd. but then theres greed if, which shows echidna taking advantage of subaru for her own greed, subaru growing Worse because of echidna, and greed emilia also growing Worse in addition to everyone else involved in all of this. this is absolutely horrifying on multiple levels. OF COURSE shes also angry and grief stricken on subarus behalf—from her perspective, subaru has gotten hurt because of her and other people Repeatedly. she WILL blame herself for not doing enough (even though again, subaru and the people around them have made their own choices). she'll get angry and upset that subaru has even had to carry a burden like this alone, that hes been hurt so many times, and the fact that emilia herself is at the core of all of this. thats absolutely fucking terrifying. subaru has gone all this way for her. from her perspective—how can she possibly make up for all of this? she cant.
and then it gets even more terrifying because greed if subaru is a dark version of him that takes all his ugly traits and exerts control over everyone around him. hes miserable. hes horrifying. hes quite frankly an eldritch horror masquerading as this smiling mannequin version of natsuki subaru. and if emilias finding out about greed if, she has to find out about this other version of her thats all her worst traits amplified as well—shes a useless doll in the sense that greed if subaru removed emilias choices and did everything for her. hes the new puck to her, and puck was already a terrible parent by also exerting control over emilia in his own ways only to do horrible shit (see: destroying the whole world after she dies) behind her back. you know what that sounds like? subaru. and greed if subaru continues to enable this in emilia—hes responsible for her turning out this way and he continues to take care of her by doing everything for her because he now has this emilia that wants to bend to his every whim and follow everything he tells her to do. thats all she has left. subarus actions caused her to snap in this way because he never gave her a chance to actually flourish on her own. he never tried to help her rather than control her. and its why, in all her instability, she nearly freezes everything around her every time she gets angry and upset (see: her nearly having a breakdown after seeing subaru got hurt because of beatrice). greed if subaru has essentially gotten his "dream girl" in the worst way possible—emilia is now fully and completely dependent on him. she never had the chance to be otherwise.
its so incredibly clear when you read greed if that the moment emilia gets on the throne of lugunica, because she will, because subaru will absolutely make that happen, emilia will become a puppet ruler because shes too mentally unstable now to actually rule. because again, subarus made the choices for her this whole time, and it broke her.
greed if beatrice is also similar because really all subaru did was drag her kicking and screaming out of that burning mansion. yeah, from his perspective, what other choice did he have? he had to save beatrice. and theres no denying that greed if subaru has good intentions, but he has a hard time seeing and treating the others as people. theyre just like dolls that he has to drag around, and then he has this whole list of people that need saving, a whole quota he has to fulfill, so he drags them kicking and screaming along with him instead of talking to them as equals. as people.
greed if subaru is the subaru that keeps abusing rbd and going back in time over and over again, but not once is he actually using it to do something like, i dont know, wholeheartedly try to save beatrice by letting her make the choice to save herself like in canon main route arc 4. instead he just dooms her by never letting her choose and by never even trying to talk her out of it. or maybe he has, but he never understood how to do that in the right way. main route subaru figured it out by fully taking the time to understand her on a deep level and empathize with her. beatrice was the one to make the choice to save herself. greed if subarus had Infinite Tries and he never figured out how to actually save beatrice. mainbaru treated beatrice like her own person. greedbaru treats beatrice, and many other people, INCLUDING HIMSELF, like an object. he doesnt save them because he sincerely loves them, at this point. or maybe he does, but its not in a healthy way because hes just saving them because he has to. its an oligation, not a sincere desire to see them happy and safe and fulfilled in ways thats good for them.
and main emilia, i think, would Absolutely be horrified by herself. and i think shed pity greed emilia, but she'd also be disgusted. greed emilia is everything that emilia has hated about herself. greed emilia is the worst of her personified. but emilia would pity her. greed emilia has zero control over herself, her emotions, her own life. the two most important men in her life—puck and subaru—hurt her so deeply that shes just that far gone. and main emilia would be horrified by greed subaru of course, but i think shed be disgusted by all his manipulation. its sad and pathetic and Terrifying to watch. but of course its complicated.
and i hate the idea that emilia cant handle anything complicated (which tappei continues to push forward because hes fixated on making emilia "stupid" and "pure" and "innocent"), but while i think emilia would struggle to wrap her mind around all of this (because honestly who WOULDNT be struggling to do that with all of this shit aljsdlfjsdf), emilia would try her best. and she'd turn to echidna more because subaru wouldnt have turned out that way without echidnas influence. greed if subaru, after all, is still a victim. an imperfect victim, but still a victim, at the end of the day. but i think emilia would eventually have to reconcile that puck, while he did love her, wasnt the best (AT LEAST more than what she already kinda did in arc 4, because she doesnt know the full extent). he was far from it. he failed her in a lot of ways. hes hurt a lot of people. and emilia would have to know that subaru is capable of doing these horrible things too, but the subaru she knows and loves now is far different. shes sorry that hes had to deal with all of this alone. she'd be deeply sorry for greed if subaru, even. these things have nuances and i fully believe emilia will be able to understand even if it takes her some time to do so (because again—WHO WOULDNT feel complicated feelings about this??).
its like how subaru continually forgives the people around him for things theyve done in other timelines—theyre not the same people in the main timeline now. emilia would recognize that, because she herself is someone who sees the ugliness of the world, someone whos experienced it, and someone who wants to reject it all and try her best to choose kindness and love. and she knows that shes capable of that same ugliness too (see: greed if emilia) (see: her killing pandora numerous times after pandora tore apart her family and home) (see: her doing the arc 3 fallout with subaru) (see: her accidentally hurting others in frozen bonds) (see: her accidentally freezing her people) (see: her lowest points in arc 4). but—isn't that part of being human?
i do think that despite everything, emilia would pity echidna a bit. echidna, who deeply loathes her but is driven to tears over it for Unknown Reasons. of course that wont stop emilia from being disgusted by echidnas actions though.
yeah so anyway tldr: emilia deserves to go absolutely feral because i absolutely think she would go apeshit on echidna if she found out about what echidna did to beatrice and subaru. shes fully capable of it and we've seen her go feral multiple times okay. the moment she finds out about her loved ones being hurt shes gonna be like cradling them gently to her chest and then she turns around and goes feral on whoever hurt them 😭 it is SO over for echidna. (AND GREEDBARU, if emilia had the chance to.)

A cry escapes George’s lips. “Dream—” Dream brings George closer, holds his face in two large palms. “Tell me when you’re hurting, sweetheart,” he whispers thickly, “and I can try help.” George shakes his head. “No,” he says, weepy, “‘s’too much—” “Never,” Dream says. He holds George’s gaze. “You’re never too much—nothing you ever feel is ever too much.”

Pretty Cute
Morpheus (Dream of the Endless) x male!reader
So I noticed there was a CRIMINAL lack of male!reader fics for Morpheus, and that’s just a travesty if you ask me. So as the saying goes, when you want something done, you do it yourself. To all my lovely mlm brothers/siblings in the Sandman fandom, this is for you! Love you, dearies. *blows kisses* Now enjoy!
(If it’s unclear, you work at a library at the circulation desk)
Since you’re dating the King of Dreams, your relationship with him is very private. And you like it that way... but you’d like it more if your fellow library employees weren’t so obsessed with learning more about him.
Tumblr media
There were many things you loved about Morpheus. He was a sweet, loving man behind the cold front. He cared so deeply, despite initially being guarded, not wanting his heart crushed by the person he felt so strongly for. You felt honored, almost, that you got to see this caring side of him. Yes, you loved Morpheus.
The only thing you didn’t love about being with Morpheus…
“Soooo, any plans with your boyfriend tonight?”
… was that your co-workers had become obsessed with him.
Don’t misunderstand, you loved your library job. After a string of jobs with terrible work environments and even worse co-workers and bosses, the library was heaven. Good hours, good pay, and you had become friends with all the other people that worked there. You’d subjected Morpheus to countless regalements of your job, whether it be about the kids you met, your co-workers, or the antics of patrons, and he always listened with a sweet smile.
Your co-workers meant well, you knew that (or at least hoped). You also hadn’t dated anyone in a while before meeting Morpheus, which meant they were overjoyed for you. But that also meant they were curious about the man who, as Tracey the romantic put it, had stolen your heart and carried it with him.
“Don’t you have to go do book drop?” You asked Katie rather than answer the question.
“Caroline’s doing book drop. Now answer the question!”
You sighed. “Yes, we do have plans. He’s going to take me back to… to his place.” You weren’t entirely sure how to say he was going to take you to the Dreaming.
“Oooh, Y/N’s gettin’ some action,” Bek crowed from where they were processing books.
You could feel your face turning red. “Shut up, Bek,”
Bek laughed. “Okay, okay, I’m sorry. I’m sure it’ll be the kind of disgustingly romantic date you deserve.”
“Is Y/N going out with his boyfriend tonight?” Caroline popped up from coming back from shelving books. “Does this mean we’ll get to meet him finally?”
“No, I’m supposed to meet him when I get home,” you replied. In all honesty, you were glad Morpheus never showed up to your job. You could handle your nosy co-workers, but they would definitely ask him millions of questions and you weren’t sure if he would be ready for that.
“Are you going to have a movie night or something?” Caroline asked interestedly.
“That is classified information,”
“Y/N, when are we going to meet him?” Liv asked as they perched on a surface with their water bottle. “Does he have social anxiety? ‘Cause that’s totally valid.”
“Well… sort of…”
“Ohhh, does he just hate people?” Your hesitant silence seemed to answer their question. “Hey, I totally get that. I hate talking to people I don’t know.”
“But we’re Y/N’s friends,” Bek said as they cleared their workspace. “He’s going to meet us eventually, right?”
“Not if Y/N keeps being so secretive about him,” Katie teased. “We don’t even know his name or what he does.”
“I bet he’s secretly a psycho,” Liv stated as they hopped off the desktop. “Like, he killed a bird once and it released so many endorphins that he’s always wondered how to make it happen again.”
“How cheerful, Liv,” you said dryly. “And no, he’s never killed a bird. He loves birds, actually.” You wondered what would happen if Matthew heard Liv say that.
“Oh, sweet,”
“So does he work with birds?”
You sighed exasperatedly. “No, Katie. He just likes them.” Before she could say anything else, you stopped her. “Don’t you have MelCat holds to trap?”
“Oh yeah, I actually do. I forgot about them.”
You watched in relief as she went off to take care of the MelCat holds, and went back to checking your email. The Circ Two desk was usually slow around this time of day.
“So… is he a writer?”
“Katie!” You threw your hands up in frustration and turned to look at where she sat at her desk.
“I’m just asking!” Katie defended herself. “From how you describe him, he sounds like a writer!”
“No, he’s not a writer,” you said firmly. “Just like how he’s not secretly a psycho.”
“Hey man, he could be,” Liv argued from where they had replaced Bek processing books. “Or maybe he’s a writer AND a secret psycho like Ric Madoc. You guys hear what happened to him?”
You only knew his name from how many holds had been placed on his books. They were pretty popular. “No, what?”
“Guy had a meltdown at a book reading and wrote on the walls with his own blood, then told someone he had a woman locked up in his house.”
You couldn’t help balking at that. “Jesus Christ, seriously?
“Okay, to be fair, they didn’t find anyone when they searched the house, but still. Crazy. You sure your boyfriend’s never written with his own blood?”
“I’m sure we all want to know more about Y/N’s partner,” Sara suddenly appeared, much to your relief, “but he’ll tell us when he’s ready to.”
“Thank you, Sara,” you said gratefully, nodding and gesturing to her. “That’s exactly what I’ll do.”
“… But it would be nice to know his name,”
You turned to give her a look of utter betrayal. “Et tu, Sara?”
Sara have you a sheepish smile. “Sorry, Y/N. You don’t have to tell us his name if you really don’t want to. It’s your life, not ours.”
It wasn’t just that. You weren’t sure if you even could explain Morpheus to them. How could you say to your fellow human co-workers that you were dating the personification of all their dreams?
“Listen,” you said, trying to be as gentle yet as firm as possible, “I know you guys mean well, and I know you want to look out for a friend, but Sara’s right. I like my privacy, and my partner likes his privacy too. I’ll tell you more about him when he and I are ready to. But I’m happy; I swear, I’m probably the happiest I’ve ever been with him. He’s… incredible. Just amazing.” You didn’t realize that a smile was forming on your face as you thought of Morpheus. “Okay?”
Your co-workers were quiet for a moment, then Katie sighed. “Okay.” She smiled at you. “I’m glad you’re happy, at least.”
“Yeah, you deserve it, man,” Liv agreed, nodding.
“Absolutely,” Caroline echoed.
Your smile widened at their response. You really did love this motley bunch. “Thank you, guys,”
“You’re always welcome, Y/N,” Sara said with a kind smile. “Now Caroline, I think you’re supposed to do the book drop?”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
And with that, your work day continued. You went on your lunch break, shelved some books, manned the front circulation desk, and eventually returned to the back desk. The whole time, your mind was on thoughts of Morpheus and your date tonight. You missed him… even though you’d seen him a few days ago. But you couldn’t help missing him when he got so busy ruling over the Dreaming. Maybe over the weekend you could visit Lucienne and catch up with your favorite librarian (not that you told the librarians at your job that).
You couldn’t help wondering how he’d react if he knew of his popularity with your co-workers. He no doubt knew who they all were from their dreams. Would he be amused, or annoyed? You felt like he’d be annoyed.
It was the last hour of your shift when it happened. Liv was up at the front circulation desk, while you were once more at the back desk, going over your assigned reports and grumbling about how that damn library was dragging their feet putting the stupid book in transit.
“Hi there!” You heard Liv chirp as they usually did when a patron came up to the desk. “Is there anything I can help you with?”
“I am looking for Y/N L/N.”
You froze. No… that wasn’t… why was he here?
Your heart began to quicken in pace as you got up from your chair. He’d never come to the library while you were working before.
To Liv’s credit, they didn’t realize who it was at first. “I’m sorry, who?”
“Y/N L/N. He works here.”
“Um… I’m sorry, but I don’t—”
“It’s okay, Liv,” you interrupted as you walked out to the front desk. “I know who he is.”
And sure enough, there he was, standing at the desk in a black pea coat, black clothes, and presumably his black combat boots. Morpheus. He looked up, and his face immediately softened when your eyes met.
Your heart raced even faster, and you smiled back. “This is a surprise,” you couldn’t help saying.
Morpheus gave a tiny shrug.
Liv was looking between the two of you in confusion… then realization dawned on their face. “Is he…?” They pointed at him.
You sighed and nodded. “Yes, Liv. It’s him.”
A grin of pure excitement crept onto their face as they turned back to Morpheus. “It is so great to finally meet you!” they exclaimed. “You’re pretty famous around here! We’ve been dying to know about Y/N’s boyfriend that hopefully treats him like the king he is.”
You had to fight back a laugh at the blank look Morpheus gave them. He blinked once. “I…” he awkwardly trailed off.
“Liv,” you came to his rescue and tapped them on the shoulder, “I think you’re overwhelming him.”
“Oh! Oh, sorry,” they apologized. “Actually, I think that guy over there is coming back with some donations, so… I’ll just. Go. Do that.” They awkwardly waved at Morpheus. “Nice to meet you.”
Morpheus dipped his head at them. Liv respectfully didn’t say anything else and went to go get the mentioned donations.
You stepped closer and gave Morpheus a loving smile, wishing you could kiss him right there in the library. “You’re early,”
A smile appeared on his handsome face. “I missed you,”
“I missed you too. But… why are you here?”
“Do you not want me here?”
“No! God no, I am so happy to see you. But you’ve never come to the library before. I thought you were going to meet me at my house.”
“I was.” Morpheus leaned in closer. “But I missed you too much, my love.”
Your heart fluttered in your chest. “You are amazing, you know that?”
Morpheus’s smile widened affectionately. Then he glanced over your shoulder. “Is it true what Olivia said?”
“What?” You turned around to see Liv’s silhouette in the tinted window that showed the back room. Katie and Corey’s shadows were there too, and Liv was waving their hands around in the animated way they did when they got excited. “Oh,” you sighed sheepishly. “Yeah, they… they’re really curious about you. They get really nosy sometimes, probably more so because I never tell them anything. I’m sorry Liv said that to you.”
“Why have you not told them anything?”
“Well, I know you like your privacy, and I didn’t want you to get overwhelmed by them.” You couldn’t help laughing softly. “They’ve got a million questions about you.”
“Perhaps one day…” Morpheus mused.
You blinked in surprise. “Really?” You couldn’t help the delighted smile. “Great, because I have wanted to brag about my amazing boyfriend for ages now.”
“Is that why you are with me?” Morpheus said in a teasing voice. “For the bragging rights?”
“Well, not the only reason,” you chuckled. You gave into temptation and leaned across the counter to kiss him on the cheek. “I am also madly in love with you.”
The widest smile you’d ever seen so far graced Morpheus’s face. “As I am with you, my love,”
You blushed happily… then remembered where you were. “W-Well, listen, it’s,” you looked over your shoulder to check the clock behind you, “4:40 right now, so I get off in twenty minutes. Do you want to sit and wait until then? Or you can go back to my apartment and wait there.”
“I will wait here,” Morpheus decided. He gave you a soft smile that made you melt. “For you, I would wait for hours.”
“G-Great,” you managed through your wide grin. “Th-The, uh, the mystery section is over there.” You pointed in the direction of the mysteries. “Th-The fiction is before it.”
“Thank you.” He gave you one last beautiful smile. “Perhaps I will ask for a library card.”
You managed a breathy laugh as he turned around and headed for the mystery section.
When you returned to the back desk, you were met with Liv, Katie, and Corey, who all had eager smiles on their faces. “Soooo?” Katie asked.
Your face turned red. “Shut up, Katie,”
“Aww, he’s so red!” Corey teased. “I understand why; he’s cute.”
“Can all of you please stop?”
“So you admit that he’s cute,” Liv said smugly.
“You know what…”
You trailed off, then turned to look out the tinted window in the direction Morpheus had gone. You smiled, and turned back to your endearingly nosy friends. “Yeah. He is pretty cute.”

ok
so
lestappen rbr teammates but everyone thought that charles wouldnt fit in at redbull and he proved them wrong by bonding with max verstappen so hard that they become unbeatable in grill the grid
so bare with me and get this
charles announces his departure from ferrari and everyone is shocked because this guys breaths and lives and loves and adores ferrari even in the worst moments so they are like wtf is happening
when he announces that his move would lead him to rbr, they are like wtf are you doing you will not survive verstappen you will be out of place you wont get on with the guy at all
he was out of place because he still felt like an intruder but he quickly got over it because simply max
so, he liked max, that was obvious. like he would not deny in that. charles knows that he liked max since he was a kid but he coped with it when the inchident happened, he coped when max entered f1 three years befor him, he coped when austria 2019 happened, he coped when 2022 happened.
so he couldnt do much about it because it was. a crush. yeah
he thought hey since we are teammates i can get over it and just bond with him like a normal person and just get him as a friend off track and a rival on track
simple
but jesus christ max is so nice that its painful
its terrible. max is nice and thoughtful and a cool guy and pretty and hot and ugh charles almost regrets not resisting another win of barely points so that the merc seat would open. almost
almost because he and max just work so well. off track, on track, everyday every time they meet they just.. click
and its funny too because he knew even before he came to rbr that they click, he knew since he was little and he let other people be convinced that they will not work because they have no business in thier relationship and stuff but being so close to max made him aware of this constantly
and its enjoyable being in eachothers company and they are so relaxed with one another that they start a genuine strong friendship which led them to random talks at 3 am on random days of the week at eachother houses
this is where its starts
they are expected to film a video for the first grill the grid of the season at the next gp
while they cant know what they will be made to do, max knows a couple of people from f1/fia pr and he could easily get the info on what they are suppose to do
he tells so to charles one night while they were hanging out in monaco, maxs flat, just eating takeout and playing fifa
now charles is a competitive person and he hate losing at those videos and is absolutely fed up with being called a babygirl himbo so he tells max to hit those pr people up and beg them for the prompts so he can study them and win
max, another competitive person, absolutely agrees with charles and they shake hands: dammed be the actual champion, that they sure will win but the grill the grid champions is more important at 1 am on a wednesday
so they start to prepare themselves by studying for the video and they are doing study dates between interviews and team debriefs
and they absolutely smash the competition
they both come first, tying ofc and they are absolutely ecstatic
so they do that again and again
some of those challenges are made to be for both teammates so they work even better when they are together, placing first by a margin not only in the championship
and its so fun, the study dates and the absolute nerding they both do and it makes them even closer
at one point,on a study date they have their fluffy oh moment and they just.. get it now that the feelingtm are revealed
and they are fluffy and in love and they do their little cheater stuff and at the end of the season, when they are drunk because they won the constructor championship and charles won the drivers one, one of them slips up that they cheated the whole grill the grid season and every other driver is enraged (mainly geroge and lando tbh thats how i see it)
and they are like tf why did you tell charles you have contact with the pr people?? to max and he says something like i wanted him to win no matter what. in a casual tone
and charles is literally so drunk on love at the moment and says someting cheesy like yeah even if you cheated you still won my heart and its cute and nice and fluffy and tooth rotting sweet and just
lestappen bonding as teammates
and so sweet
ugh its 3 am im done i love this concept i changed it 2 times tho
anyway if you read this ty!, it was a lil thing i had in mind and i couldnt resist not to write it
and ik quality is probably bad, its because this is the first time im writing someting like this but i could not care less ( lie i really hope its at least readable as in i hope there is coherence)

Lovers Swapped Personalities
Chemma or Emmalier?
Anyways, an alternate universe where Chevalier actually received loved from his mom and didn’t become the brutal beast.
Tumblr media
Emma walked through the halls, minding her own business. She abruptly stopped when she saw tripwire in her path. With a sigh, she stepped over it and kept walking.
Pranks come with the territory of marrying into the royal family. Actually, even getting hired to work in the palace would subject you to Clavis’ pranks. Anyone in the palace was at the mercy of the third prince.
“You think you got away from that one huh?” Clavis asked Emma. She whipped around and frowned. “Well I apologize, but that isn’t the case.”
“What are you going on about?” Emma questioned.
“Well Chev and I teamed up on this one and we came up with quite the clever scheme,” Clavis said proudly.
Emma turned back around and continued walking. As she passed by a door, it opened and a bunch of rose petals exploded into her face from inside the room.
When the rose petals settled, Emma did not look amused. Chevalier popped out from behind the door. “I can’t believe you let him rope you into one of his pranks. Again,” Emma said.
“Chev is my big brother, of course he’d help me if I asked him,” Clavis said.
“Your shocked expression is adorable,” Chevalier told her. “I couldn’t pass up the opportunity, I had to see it again.”
“And we got to use the rose petals one last time before they get used to make rose water,” Clavis added, proud of himself. Emma shook her head at Clavis and walked away.
“All right, clean this up,” Chevalier ordered.
“Fine,” Clavis huffed and pouted.
When Chevalier caught up with Emma, he approached her with caution. “I’m sorry, please don’t be mad.”
“I do not understand why you entertain his foolish ideas,” Emma told him.
“He’s my little brother. No matter how foolish he seems, he’s my brother. I have to humor him,” Chevalier explained.
“I never had brothers or sisters, so I’m not familiar with this concept of foolishness.”
“He’s always been mischievous like this since we were little. My mother always encouraged me to entertain him.”
“I see…” Emma said.
“I apologize. I won’t involve you in his pranks from now on,” Chevalier told her.
“I’m not mad, just… annoyed, I think.” Emma told him. “Only a mere nuisance, that’s all.”
“It was supposed to make you smile.”
“I can’t see how exploding rose petals in my face was supposed to make me smile.”
“Okay, maybe it was actually to make me smile,” Chevalier laughed. “I love you.”
Emma’s lips cracked a smile in response and Chevalier’s smile widened.

As per my suggestion...!!
heres the promised mermaid au fic!!! I might not ever finish it because theres a lot of worldbuilding and writing stuff that i dont have time for😔i havent looked over this in a while and it isnt beta read either so ignore any mistakes!! All that aside now, pls enjoy!!
Well, here I am.
Looking up, her expression hardly wavered at the luxurious and magnificent hotel she stood in front of.
Here it is. Tres Spades.
Her glance shifted low to the dark blue dress she wore specifically for the famous I.V.C held at the hotel. Her pearl necklace reflected the huge amount of light from both the inside and outside and her silk, white gloves held onto a matching white clutch. She wasn't gonna look like anyone present at the party, but she was fine with that. The party wasn't what was on her mind anyway, it didn't matter if she stood out or not.
All she had to do was get to the penthouse.
Walking through crowds and crowds of people, her white heels clicked with every step she took on the recently cleaned floor. As she reached the room the I.V.C was held at, she was suddenly startled by someone talking behind her.
"Woah! I've never seen you around here. Is this your first time attending the I.V.C perhaps?"
She spun around to find two men looking at her, their eyes not leaving hers. She recognized one of the two almost instantly.
"Oh! Why yes, this is my first time here. I was looking for Mr. Ichinomiya? He was supposed to escort me to the party." She flashed a radiant smile, hoping to catch the two off-guard. As she stared at them, she realized the identity of the second man who strangely wore a fedora hat.
"Oh! We're his accomplices, and I haven't heard anything about you from Mr. Ichinomiya...would you give us your name?" The blonde smiled, crossing his arms and waiting for an answer. Her heart slowly began beating faster as she thought of a made-up name.
"Misaki. My name is Misaki." She extended her hand out for a handshake, which the brunette took and gave the back of it a gentle kiss. Her heartbeat slowly went back to normal and her smile slightly fell.
"A beautiful name for a beautiful lady. My name is Mitsunari Baba, but you can call me Micchy or Mitsu for short. And you probably already know who my friend is." Baba glanced back and forth between the blonde and the woman.
"Of course, Kisaki Ota. I'd be ashamed if I didn't know who you were." She bowed and internally cringed, her patience slowly running low. She wasn't here to chat up some men...but, if they managed to get her up to the penthouse, at least the lying would be worth it.
"You flatter me Miss Misaki! Now, what was that about Mr. Ichinomiya escorting you to the I.V.C?"
"Ah, right. We talked over the phone weeks prior to the I.V.C, but he must have forgotten. He's a busy man after all, and so am I." Lying in situations as such was her specialty, but for some reason she felt as if she was being read easily. Can they tell?
"Boss is a very busy man. If you'd like, we could escort you around the I.V.C ourselves?" Baba gave her a handsome smile that would swoon women in her place, but she was barely phased. It wasn't her job to begin flirting with a thief.
She tried to shake off the unusual feeling she felt when she realized Ota's smile had also fallen a bit as he stared at her. Not at her, but her necklace specifically. The only explanation that sat right with her was that he'd been looking at it from an artist's point of view. She didn't know if he realized the necklace was made out of real pearls, however.
"I would appreciate it very much, Mitsunari." She smiled again for the sake of being polite.
From nearly getting lost in the sea of people to stumbling upon a mysterious looking hallway and being sold at a black market auction held in the basement of the hotel, she was only a few steps away from her goal. It didn't matter who bought her, she would escape them either way. Her eyes were set on finding one man and that man only. Her surprise when she heard she was sold to seat #100 came as a shock even to her. She fell right into the hands of the man she had her eyes on.
The cage she sat in had been carried all the way up to the penthouse, her heart racing as she realized how close she was to her target. Even if they didn't speak and wore masks, she knew exactly who the two men that carried her up there were as well.
And when she was brought in, she found herself face to face with him. Eisuke Ichinomiya.
"Who are you?"
"Boss, this is the lady that we-"
"If you let me out of this cage, I will tell you exactly who I am and what I'm doing here."
She stared at the five men who stared back at her. Her smile from earlier was replaced with a fierce gaze at Eisuke, who was staring at her cautiously.
"And how do we know you don't have any ulterior motives?" A strong looking man stood up which she quickly identified as Soryu, Eisuke's childhood friend and a mobster.
"If your security is good at checking whether or not people have weapons on them, then you don't have to be afraid Mr. Oh." She held her chin high and smiled internally at his slightly bewildered face.
"...You know who we are?" Eisuke spoke, eyebrows narrowing as he stared at her through his eyelashes. She could sense he was conflicted and a little confused.
"I know you all. And we'd be able to talk like normal people if you let me out of this cage," She crossed her arms, gaze not faltering as she stared back at Eisuke, "But we probably already know the phrase "normal people" doesn't suit you at all, right Ichinomiya?"
She saw his eyebrow twitch. As she guessed earlier, Baba and Ota took their masks off, their gazes switching back and forth between the woman and Eisuke.
"Is your definition of a succesful individual 'abnormal'?" Eisuke crossed his arms and took a sip of his wine, placing it on the table in front of him afterwards.
"I think we both know what I mean here." Her gaze went to the wine glass in front of him. Lowering her open palm, she aimed it directly at the glass before knocking it over, the wine spilling on Eisuke's leg.
All the men's eyes widened and Eisuke swiftly stood up, panic evident on his features.
"Eisuke, go!" Soryu suddenly yelled at him. Realizing he had to move as fast as he could, he dashed towards the staircase with a curse, managing to make it up before anyone could see anything.
When they made sure he was out of sight, everyone shot a glare at the woman. Only Ota seemed to stand still, still comprehending what had just happened.
"What the hell was that?" Soryu approached the cage, gun in hand now. The woman only grinned as the realization that she'd indeed found the man she was looking for began setting in.
"I think you know exactly what it was." Her fingers tapped at the golden cage as the mobster stared her down. She felt confident knowing she wouldn't be killed in that moment after what she did. They needed answers and she was aware of that. There was also no way they'd let her go unless they heard the full story, unless they didn't let her go at all. She was bought by them after all.
"I...don't get it. How did you knock over that glass?" Baba stared, still a little stunned. She rolled her eyes and glanced at the thief who was looking at her for an answer.
"I'm pretty sure you know that as well." Before looking away, she caught a glimpse of Ota looking almost...solemn, as he stared off into the distance.
"Come on now, you can't all play dumb. I'm here for one reason and one reason only."
"And that is?"
"Eisuke."
Soryu stared at her once more with a stern look on his face. Was he gonna let her out? She made it clear she'd explain everything if she was out of the cage...but how could he trust her like that? Especially when he didn't even know her name?
"Open the cage Mitsunari." A deep voice from the back spoke, the woman recognizing it as Mamoru's. At least he's not entirely stupid, as much as he is lazy.
Baba hesitantly reached into his pocket to take out a key, Soryu stepping away to make space. Opening the cage, the woman stepped out, arms crossed over one another. The men continued to stare at her for a moment before they heard footsteps coming from the staircase.
Her eyes immediately locked with Eisuke's as she looked up. He looked both furious and confused as he walked down each step.
"I'm gonna ask this one last time. Who are you and what are you doing here?" Making his way towards her, he stood in-between Baba and Soryu, eyes staring daggers into the woman. He only recieved a grin in return.
"I heard a siren call from miles away, and it lead me here in your hotel."
The CEO stared in pure confusion. He almost wanted to laugh at how ridiculous she sounded. A siren call. Is she for real?
Sure, it might not have sounded...that ridiculous, given the situation he was suddenly thrust into in less than twenty seconds. His eyes traveled to her neck adorned by the pearl necklace. He could feel his throat going dry even as he swallowed.
Those are real pearls.
And, sure, seeing real pearls hung on a string as an accessory wasn't the most unusual thing Eisuke had seen. But the way this woman was dressed bewildered him.
He estimated the cost of both her dress and heels were most probably around 200 dollars. Her gloves were made of silk, therefore they had to have been a little expensive. The pearls were what threw him off. A single, real white pearl was already expensive, but her necklace consisted of at least thirty pearls that varied in colors and shapes. He even recognized one of the rarest blue pearls hung onto the string, and he could feel the nervousness bubbling to the surface the more he stared.
"You've...gotta be kidding right?" The thief asked, gaze shifting to Eisuke who tried so hard to keep his expression as neutral as possible. Both him and Soryu were begining to catch onto the situation.
"I'm very serious. I came here specifically to talk to Eisuke, on behalf of my people."
"Your...people?" Puzzled, Soryu raised an eyebrow at her, his eyes now also shifting to look at Eisuke.
"I know what you are Eisuke. And we need your help." The woman's tone slowly morphed into one of pleading, as did her expression. Eisuke stared for what seemed like hours before sighing and turning his back to her.
"You have five minutes to explain."
"Five?!"
"Yes, only five."
She stared at his back as he walked over to the couch and sat down, Soryu and Baba following. She was glad she got the opportunity to talk...but five minutes? Really?!
"Alright I...just, do you mind bringing a glass of water?" Her gaze went to the artist who seemed to think about her question a little longer than he had to before nervously answering.
"Sure..." He put on a smile and strode over to the kitchen in the penthouse. Taking a deep breath before exhaling, her gaze returned to Eisuke who now sat on the couch, waiting for his explanation.
"First of all, I'd like to apologize for barging in all of a sudden and spilling wine on you. You were probably all confused and angry, especially you, Ichinomiya." Her heels clicked as she walked over to the four men, Eisuke's eyebrows forming into a frown as he recalled what happened.
"Apologize another time, get to your story." He swiftly crossed his legs and rest his chin in his palm as he waited for her to begin, as if he were a teacher about to listen to a student's excuse for a missed assignment.
By the time she stopped staring Eisuke down, Ota had come back with a glass of water as she'd asked. Funny how she has barely been here for five minutes and is ordering people around as if she owns the penthouse.
Thanking the artist, she set the glass down on the coffee table and waited for Ota to grab a seat, only for him to stand next to the couch Baba, Soryu and Eisuke sat on.
"As I said...I know what you are, Eisuke. Even if you might not know exactly what you are, we desperately need your help." She began, voice brave despite her slowly plummetting spirit.
"Who is this "we" you've been throwing around?" Baba exclaimed before getting interrupted by the woman.
"I'll get there. Let me explain."
"You fell into a pool when you were young in London...right?" She raised an eyebrow and looked at Eisuke for his reaction. He definitely didn't disappoint. His eyes went wide and he was now listening to her more cautiously, the nervous feeling on the verge of overflowing.
"You became a mermaid. Or...a merman. Otherwise known as a siren." She explained like she was some lunatic, but Eisuke knew better than to assume that when she was right. Except he had no idea what she meant by the siren part of it.
"How do you know any of this. Only my manager and some acquaintances are aware of what happened. How did you manage to find out what happened a decade ago?"
"That's not important. What is important is that I'm a real mermaid born at sea, and my people have and I have been threatened by the human race for years," She looked down, remembering the last moments with her family before they were taken from her, "They sacrificed themselves so I would stay alive and get help."
"It took you this long to find me?" Eisuke interrupted, his thoughts now racing. Had she been stalking him? Did she somehow bribe someone to tell her about him? What kind of help did she need exactly?
"I've known about you ever since you fell into that pool. You see, I'm from Britain myself, and all of us have known about you ever since that day." She explained briefly, not leaving any room for questions as she continued quickly afterwards.
"You're the first merman to have ever fallen in the pool in that cave in nearly sixty years. It just so happened that you became a siren on the day the last merman transformed 43 years before you did." She briefly caught a glimpse at Ota looking down at the floor as if he was holding something back. Did he wanna ask a question?
She decided to ignore it, passing it as just him being lost in his thoughts.
"This is...too much information," Eisuke rubbed his temple, her words barely registering. He was finally used to being this weird form of a human after so long, and suddenly there's so much information shoved into him it's almost too overwhelming.
"You think? You gave me five minutes to explain, I'm using that time wisely." She may have been aware of the conflicted situation he was in at that moment as he slowly took in what she was saying. Still though, she figured she might as well drop the bomb as quickly as she could, even if it confused Eisuke at first.
"We've been looking for a siren for years now due to our problems with the human race. And that just so happened to be you..."
Her frightless demeanor began to wear off, quickly replaced by someone in genuine need of help. Eisuke stared at her, her words still registering. So he was a siren. Was it good that he finally knew his identity after so many years? He certainly didn't feel any better knowing, that's for sure. What if she was lying?
"Can you prove to me in any way that you're telling the truth?"
The woman stared at him. Of course, Eisuke Ichinomiya of all people would never believe some girl suddenly showing up at his penthouse, telling him he was a damn siren and that there were real mer-people living in the sea with no proof. The whole story seemed like a sick joke. Even if she knew things many others hadn't known, even if she held information that Eisuke had never revealed publicly...he had to know.
"If you'll allow me to," She raised her open palm once more and focused her energy on the glass of water in front of her. Soon enough, they saw what looked like a bubble rise out of the glass. Eisuke knew she wasn't lying the moment he saw the "bubble" rise higher and higher, but still wanted to see what she would do. As the water reached her head, her hand suddenly dropped to her side, as did the bubble. The CEO's eyes widened as it splashed over her head and he was already begining to count down the seconds it took for her to transform. No sooner than that did Baba get up and rushed over to her, holding her up by her arms as her legs disappeared and were replaced by a sparkling blue tail.
"Is that enough proof for you, Ichinomiya?"

DP x DC Fic Idea
Not me spending an hour figuring out an age chart for a fic I will never write. And then another 5 writing down the whole concept…. Well for those who actually see it, enjoy this behemoth. More posts to follow under #Jay Gale’s brothers
[Age Chart]  [Extra Notes]
~~~~~
Stuff happens and Danny runs to Gotham to escape from the GIW. Standard Batfam crossover. The fact that it hides his presence means the hunters can't find him. It also means he can't leave. At least not yet. His original plan is to recoup (Maybe he's very injured) and eventually find a way to the ghost zone himself. (Wulf and Cujo also can't find him?) So he keeps his head down and gets by. Using his powers at the barest minimum.
A month or so into his stay, the fuckery that revives Jason happens. Danny can tell before it happens that something is about to go down, and with a little effort, can kind of tell the areas it affected. The first person he makes it to is Jason, and using intangibility, is able to pull him out of his grave in time.
Notice I said First person. I don't think that Jason was the only person resurrected at that time. He was just the only one with enough training to remain calm enough in horrible situations; and be able to take stock and dig himself out before he died again.
Danny can still feel the other areas, and knows he has to get to them fast, but he doesn't want to leave this panicking and injured kid by himself. (Jason looks younger than he is due to malnutrition from the streets) (Resurrection only heals death injuries enough for them to not die again right away, the worse the death…)
So as carefully and as quickly as he can, Danny carries Jay with him to the other cemetery. He manages to get to a pair of young twins just in time but… Angst Potential: Because he spent the time to calm down Jason and the twins, he wasn't able to get to the last resurrected before they died a second time. But he keeps this to himself so the others don't feel guilty about needing comfort. Maybe this eats him alive for years, the second chance that could have, but never happened. (The OC’s Here are optional, but they have grown on me, and the bonding Jay and Danny could have from raising 4year old twins is marvellous) (Though as a replacement for them, maybe it could be a de-aged Dani instead?)
He takes them back to the place he’d been staying at, and starts doing his best to take care of them. But I think it is cannon (?) that the Reso leaves them very disoriented and injured, especially Jason. He can't go to the hospital and he can't go to Frostbite yet, he does what he can but he's at a loss of what to do. Eventually he notices that the small amount of ectoplasm he emits seems to be helping, but is not near enough. So he goes to get more.
In this AU lets say that Gotham also has a Lazarus pit under the city. But it is not accessible by normal human means.
In Cannon Jason gets kidnapped by the League of Assassins, and tossed in their personal Lazarus Pit. And going by the headcannon: “Leagues pit is so extremely contaminated from humans taking dips in it it's Absolutely Septic and that's the reason Pit Rage happens”
Danny, who knows how to Not contaminate samples, and knows that submerging a fleshy human wholesale in it is Not A Good Idea Ever. Does Not Do That. But rather he slowly introduced them to enough of it for them to start healing, and while that does prevent pit rage and the worst consequences of becoming liminal; It does mean that it is slow going.
Now Danny is now the sole caretaker of these newly Not Deads who are essentially very sick and need lots of care, when he was barely supporting himself, maybe even before he's fully healed. Angst.
This also means that he can't in good conscience just leave them to go to the Zone, but who knows what would happen if he took them with him. So now he's stuck in Gotham for two reasons. (He becomes one of the sole reasons that the coffee shop on the corner is still in business)
When Jason heals enough for most of the brain fog to leave, he helps out Danny where he can, mostly watching the twins when Danny is out and making food. Anyways, blah blah bonding and raising kids and learning how to Live again ensue (Could be taken as shipping i guess, but i prefer brotherhood here) (No secret relation, as much as i love those, i just want these nerds to find comfort in each other for no other reason than being themselves)
I'm also going to say that Danny is 16 during these events, but thanks to his fathers genetics, he can easily pass as 18 or even 20, so he does.
Resurrection screws with memories, the only thing they can remember, at first, with any detail is their deaths. We could have Jason slowly piece who he was together one memory at a time, OR my favourite; Have him regain everything at once the first time he sees the brand new Robin. Cue angst at being replaced “so easily” (This is how Danny finds out) and refusing to tell Bruce he's back.
Danny’s totally down because of his mistrust of billionaires and also the now engrained “Holy Shit Is That The Bat If He Finds Out I Have Powers He’ll Kick Me Out, I Can't Leave The Safety Of Gotham!”
(Jason: Safety??? In Gotham?! What the hell are you on?!?) (This is how Jason finds out)
Despite being a lot less murdery in this AU, Jason still becomes the Red Hood. Mostly to protect and help his new family, but also because his hero instincts are not muddled by the pit rage. Maybe he sends severed hands to the police instead of heads?
The full mask and modulator mean the Batfam can't recognize him, and he's in no hurry to correct that. However, he also doesn't antagonise them. He has new brothers to protect, and he doesn't want to give the Batfam Incentive to find out about them.
But despite Jason's indifference (He doesn't care. He Doesn’t. He has Danny and the twins and an honestly shitty apartment that still feels like home. And who even cares if there's a New Robin? It's not like it matters to him! He doesn't care he swears) he still becomes sort of friends with the others.
There's a camaraderie between all Gotham vigilantes that's just a hazard of the job. (That purple girl also just won't leave him alone, but she's fun so it's okay.)
Although he does keep a distance from Dick and his replacement. He has a better big brother now, after all. But even Jason admits that having Nightwing as an ally is pretty useful. (Jason missed him so much).  And he doesn't need to get closer to the replacement to know why he's such a better Robin, so why bother.
Time passes and they never do figure out who Jason is, though there are some close calls. (Tim has his suspicions but no proof) (He keeps it to himself for now) Most of them consider the Red Hood as an ally by now, except for Bruce, who's still a bit peeved he cant find anything on this guy. Surely they should have found at least one of his safe houses by now. (Danny cackles maniacally in the background)
And then Bruce gets pulled into the time stream, and is presumed dead.
I want to disclaim here that I know practically nothing about this DC plot line. Just that it took about a year for him to get out, and Tim was the only one that didn't believe he was dead. And that this Hush guy played the part of Bruce a few times (Although why convince Gotham that Brucie Wayne was still alive if you thought he was dead? Comic logic I guess.)
But for the purpose of this AU let's say it was caused by something similar to what caused The Resurrection. (which i also know nothing about. Something about superman?)
Danny, Being Danny, goes to check it out like he did last time. But instead of finding Re-Alived people, he also gets pulled into the time stream as well.
Maybe he meets up with Bruce, maybe he doesn't. But he's gone from Gotham now and isn't likely to return for a while. Or maybe he finds his own way out, but because he's no longer in Gotham, the GIW are able to find and capture him. Angst.
With Danny suddenly gone and no way to find him, and Bruce dead with no way to reconcile with him, Jason enters panic mode. “If Danny’s no longer in Gotham then can the hunters find him?? What if they already have him?!?”
The remaining Batfam members learn who Jason is, either because he lets too much slip, or he eventually flat out goes to them for help. There is a re-reunion that no one can really appreciate due to… Well. Everything.
Unfortunately Dick cant help him out much. With his new responsibilities both as Batman and as the new single parent Guardian of Damian. Tim spends his time looking for Bruce, Cass is off doing her own things, and Steph does offer to help, but there's not much they can do with little to no information.
Jason now has to decide if he wants to stay with the twins and hope Danny finds his own way back, or leave them with someone while he starts searching. He could leave them with Dick and Damian, or he could leave them with Roy.
This is about the point where my ideas get a lot less concrete and writable… but ~*Eventually*~ Everyone is reunited and can bond and grow as the Giant and Ridiculous family they were always destined to be :} Just as slightly more functioning people. (or at least Jason is)
I have many more ideas for this, but not a lot of them would fit in this concept post. So expect a separate post for those later.
My recent artwork, which is one of my most favorite OC's work so far because I have been able to put so many details on without messing up. So I think this is the right time to give a brief introduction about my most important OC - Derek Johnson
Derek Johnson is a blues, country and folk musician. He formed The Marigold, a multi-genres band with one his close friend, Damian Reeds (I will post an introduction about him later)
Derek, full name - Derek Martin Johnson, was born on 10th of April, 1943, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, America. But due to a few issues happening between his family and the authority, they had to flee to England to live and it's where he spent most of his childhood at.
He's a very potent, spiritual leader of the band. His talent soured through his creativity, as he come up with all the best ideas for the band, his . Aside from being a mighty leader, Derek can maintain a good nature with everyone he met, depends on their behaviour toward him.
With his friendly, sociable and altruistic personality, Derek can guide other to find their right path, and find hidden talent under others and help them bloom it. It's one of the reason why Derek managed to cultivated the "chaoticness" of his band into something that's methodize (there will soon be a better introduction about the Marigold i promise)
Though Derek had an approachable personality, he can appear quite tough and intimidating sometimes. He has quite bad-tempered, can be super harsh to people and because of this, sometimes Derek often got himself into a conflict, or a fight due to his tenacious personality. Aware of his conflicted nature, Derek always tried his best to refrain his emotion toward his bandmates, friends and espesially his family.
Having to grow up in a musical household, with his father who was quite a notorious blues musician, Derek has always nurtured an ambition to become a famous musician like his dad ever since he was a child. Because of this, Derek got a huge love to blues. For him, blues music is what nourished his spirits and drove away all of his struggles.
Derek could play multi instruments, such as guitar, harmonica, bass, pianio, flute, but he chose to be the bassist of his band. The first reason was that he wanted to give his friend, who's also his bandmate, Damian, an opportunity to be let his talent with guitar developed more and more each times. Since Damian has always been more experienced with guitar more than Derek, he decided to let Damian be the guitarist of the band, while he's the bassist. Aside from that, Derek also stated that he's more comfortable playing with bass more than guitar.
In 1963, Derek married to his girlfriend, who's a biologist student then. They had their first child no longer after the wedding. Though the early stage of their relationship was very tough as they continued to have alots of quarrels between their jobs, they managed to stay together as a couple.
During his freetime aside from work, Derek enjoyed cruising his motorcycle across the countryside or empty roads. He also played some sport too, but being a biker is still one of the most favorite hobby of him.
tell me our story
dnf fic, 2k, one shot, rated m [established relationship, fluff, talk of the future and children]
George closes the door softly and leans back against the soundproof padding. Upbeat tones fill the air, resembling the beat he’d felt earlier, and Dream’s recorded voice follows. It’s twenty-thirty-six, I’ll probably have some kids, I’ll teach them not to do the same stupid shit I did … George stops breathing.
[Or, George hears Dream's new lyrics and it starts a conversation they were both longing for.]
Black.
Ash was wearing black.
...
Ash was wearing..
One of the designated steward uniform tuxedos.
He was wearing black!
He decided also to not speak of it, just do it, and then proceed to.. mill about in that fashion thusly, as the demon butler went on too about his own business.
...
But he was wearing BLOODY BLACK.
And of course everything went as usual, nothing came up, no guests were arriving today, the young master had no jobs or missions-
Sebastian was contemplating making up perhaps a list of groceries they likely didn't even need to use as an excuse to get OUT OF THERE-
But Ash beat him to the punch, as always.
"Good afternoon, demon," the angel practically chirped.
"Hm, hello," was the only answer he was getting from the demon.
A pause...
Ash tilted his entire body almost to catch a glimpse of Sebastian's current expression.
"Is today a good day, or is it not?"
....
..
.
Ash's mouth twitched and as the demon kept up his usual chores...
"I asked you a question.."
"Did you? I thought it sounded more like a mere observation, as if you'd learned by some miracle how the humans express clever quips about, well, nothing important, really-"
"I meant it! For you to answer it!"
Sebastian's eyebrow lifted at least... but he still did not turn even his head to look over at Ash Landers in his new crisp black suit.
....
"What kind of answer were to expecting from such a trivial, benign question, then, Mr. Landers."
That did it.
Ash made tiny, pitiful growl in his throat, and turned to storm off.
And the demon let out a breath, it seemed, he'd started holding in at some point.
Back to the bookshelf he had been meticulously dusting before the interruption.....
Only to have his keen demonic ears assaulted by the telltale sound of ripping clothing fabric.
In a blink the demon shot to where the angel had dragged himself to, and witnessed exactly what he'd dreaded.
Now the stupid bastard was DESTROYING the black pristine steward uniform!
"What the HELL are you doing, Ash?!"
"Whatever does it look like? My plan for you to recognize I'd attempted to blend in fell through.. My idea. My hopes. Shattered in seconds."
Sebastian felt- certainly not for the first time under this contract -like going on a rampage.
""Attempted to blend in"."
"Yes, via wearing a designated posh, black suit such as yours or that Snake fellow or dear old Tanaka senpai-"
"Ash-"
"All thwarted by you're no-nonsense, straight and narrow attitude-"
"Ash-"
"RUINED by none other than the uppity head-of-household butler and demon I'd so wished to garner the good graces of-"
Pitch black claws grabbed at the bright white angelic being prattling on, and Ash yelped dramatically as he toppled over onto the crisp clean Phantomhive estate rug.
The demon growled low like a tiger, looming over the angel, who blinked and wibbled his lips and looked ready to cry like a little scared boy.
"...Se.. bast.. ian..?"
"I’m going to ruin YOU, Ash Landers-"
"B-But.. but... I just wanted to appear before you as a good, cooperative servant of the house-"
Red eyes narrowed.
"No you didn't. Angel."
"...Huh?"
White crystal-like lashes fluttered before crystal-like purple eyes.
Trying. So hard. To appear so damn innocent even while by now pinned under such a beast.
"You wanted. Exactly. What you are getting."
Purple eyes still stared directly and unabashedly into red.
"And.. what's... that...?"
Sebastian hovered his fanged mouth near the angel's ear to hiss.
"My attention. All of it. And most definitely not for praise."
Pale pristine high cheeks went rose with blush.
And quibbling lips halted, only to turn up.
One hand that, seconds ago, was tearing apart a perfectly well put-together tuxedo went up into pitch black locks that had grown wild and loose.
Stroking and petting a beast as if to reward it for complying to orders.
"Then perhaps it is a good day, like I assumed it to be, hmm?"
The angel chirped like a little song bird.
And proceeded to laugh like a loopy little wild hyena, until a snarling black mouth shut him up.
The Shy, the Wicked, and the Cynical - Chapter 1
Summary
A former do-gooder pirate, Shy Kelsey de Bouff now works for the Armada underneath Deacon due to circumstances beyond her control. But after failing to complete her previous mission, Kelsey volunteers a target to make up for it: former friend and rising Witchdoctor, Wicked Saffron Bosworth. However, the stakes are much higher than she realizes, and she must work with a team of unusual clockworks in order to set the Spiral right. Or as right as it can be, anyway.
The satchel of gold fell lazily onto the ship vendor’s outstretched hand. He opened it greedily and laid the contents out on his hand. Several moments passed. Gold clinked against one another. He stopped and looked up at Kelsey, beaming from ear to ear.
“All accounted for,” he chirped. “Might I ask what you’re buying this for? I’ve seen you around plenty of times on different ships.”
Kelsey swore in her mind. She had forgotten her mask today, otherwise she would have dodged the question entirely. She couldn’t afford to waste time here. She glared at him as she offered her answer, not wanting him to press further. “My old one is in repair.”
He looked at her incredulously, but thankfully, he got the message. Kelsey didn’t care what he thought. He held the bottle out to her. She took it a little too quickly, unbottling the ship as soon as it touched her hand. She strode towards it quickly. She shouldn’t waste any more time on Cooper’s Roost docks.
The galleon itself was of Bison origin, something she wasn’t all that comfortable with for cultural reasons. She didn’t bother to name it. The ship would serve its purpose of getting around discreetly well. It wouldn’t be out of place for Cool Ranch, nor would it have a flag to identify her with. She couldn’t afford to have her usual markers on display either. Kelsey had already purchased the necessary equipment should broadside combat become an issue. Good enough.
The small Armada crew she had been allotted for this mission stood at the edge of the docks away from most of the ship vendors. She nodded towards them and they approached. They were an odd sort even for the Armada’s branding, which is why they had been assigned to her. They consisted of four soldiers of different designations: Parallax, a modified Battle Angel serving as a diplomat; Paradox, a lively and jovial clockwork jester with a colorful face that moves; and finally, Custos Decimus and Custos Sentus, an Armada Dragoon and an Armada Marine respectively. Both were considered defective. Custos Decimus’s programming was never quite right, and he was far too soft-hearted to enter combat as a regular Dragoon. Custos Sentus, on the other hand, had gained a disobedient streak after an incident during the arrest of another Witchdoctor left him with full sentience. If Kelsey was honest, he was the most aggravating of the crew, even with Paradox’s backhanded nature taken into account. Surprisingly, it had been Deacon who vouched for both of them and recommended that they be assigned to Kelsey.
Parallax, her first mate and trusted confidant, approached. She tapped her finger on her arm impatiently. “Awaiting your orders, Captain. Are you ready to depart?”
Kelsey nodded. Parallax was proactive-minded, which was a quality that Kelsey didn’t mind about her. As a whole, Kelsey felt an inexplicable kinship to her new crew, for perhaps she was the most different of them all. “Help me prepare and we’ll be off.”
Within the hour and the help of Kelsey’s crew, they set sail. Kelsey steered clear of the various factions roaming Cooper’s Roost Skyway and went for the pink wind-lane that she knew encircled the outer edges of Cool Ranch. They were considered neutral territory, and thus safe for her to leave the helm alone if she needed to. The winds would carry the ship if such a thing occurred.
Two days passed before Kelsey finally sailed into Tumbleweed Skyway. She had passed navigation and sailing duties onto Parallax while she rested uncomfortably over those cold nights. She had Decimus and Sentus–her nicknames for the pair–take inventory of the ship in the meantime. Paradox stood in the crow’s nest of the ship for the majority of the ride, keeping eyes on the skyways around them. Kelsey stood at the helm again, guiding the ship beyond the borders of Big Sky and into Tumbleweed.
Parallax approached from the deck. “Captain,” she said quietly as she leaned down. “We are almost at your destination. Are you sure what you are doing here is worth it?”
Kelsey nodded. “Yes, it is.” She paused. “Just before we dock at Tumbleweed, gather everyone else and take them below deck. You all are to stay down there until we set sail again. It is critical that my contact does not know that I am working with the Armada.”
Parallax bowed slightly. “As you wish, Captain.” She strode off to pass her instructions to the other crew members on deck.
Kelsey swore she could hear a hint of exasperation in Parallax’s voice, but she wouldn’t complain. Parallax wasn’t too keen on backwater places like Cool Ranch. After all, she had been working in the courts of other nobility alongside her sister, Paradox, prior to their assignment under Kelsey. But that did not–should not–matter here. Kelsey would be the one doing the information gathering. She vitally needed their skills in combat.
If the rumors Kelsey had heard were true, her target would be too difficult to capture on her own.
Kelsey lowered the board to the dock just as the sun was setting over Cool Ranch. She carefully stepped down, trying not to make note of the long way down in her periphery should she miss a step. Despite sailing for years, she didn’t think she could ever get over that intrusive fear of falling into the skyway. When she touched the docks of Tumbleweed, she almost wanted to kiss them.
She left her mask and cane behind this time. She needed to pass as her old self as much as she could. But each ever-so-slight limp towards Tumbleweed proper grew to be a huge ache in her half-clockwork heart. She climbed up the ramp, which she heard had been renovated courtesy of her contact, and finally set foot into Tumbleweed. Just to the left of the entrance was the Desert Rose Tavern. She made for it.
The tavern smelled of cinnamon and nutmeg. It was warm and lively today, if not a little busy. A pianist sat at the upright piano in the corner. Her hands moved elegantly from key to key as she played upbeat ragtime music. Kelsey found her fingers tapping along to it unconsciously. People from all walks occupied the tables, but Kelsey found an open spot at the bar.
Kodak the Barkeep–or better known to her as Cynical Jonah Landon–was a flurry of movement behind the bar. Patrons signed to him their orders and he made them with few questions.
She sat down and waited for him to finish with another customer. She was eager to get out of the dust storm that was Cool Ranch. Her heart pounded in her ears. Every thought in her mind shouted at her to turn around and leave the bar, to return to her ship and set sail again. She shouldn’t get Jonah involved, she shouldn’t–
Before she could turn around and leave, his green eyes met with her hazel ones. Jonah smiled and gestured for her to wait one moment. Kelsey nodded and compiled. Guess I’m staying put after all. He placed a cocktail for another customer at their spot at the bar, then approached Kelsey.
His hands became water as he signed to her. “Hey Kelsey!” His smile widened.
Kelsey’s voice shut off as hers found the same flow. She wanted to retch at how fake it must have seemed, but she didn’t. “Jonah! Long time no see!”
“How have you been? Where have you been? What can I get you?”
“A bottle of Yum, please. I’ve been fine,” she lied. “I’ve been sailing around, keeping up with the same old adventures we used to have.”
Jonah tilted his head at her. She assumed that it was the fact that she was not, in fact, fine. Nor was she having the adventures she said she was. She wanted to tell him everything that happened to her over the past five years, but her mission depended on keeping that critical information from him. He would not be pleased to find out who exactly her target was, but she wanted to ease him into that realization.
Kelsey had always been a terrible liar, even in her childhood. And Jonah’s uncanny ability to read facial expressions had been mastered at a young age due to his profound deafness that occurred in the middle of his childhood.
Thankfully, he didn’t press any further and went to the back. Kelsey let out a sigh she’d been holding and stiffened when she heard him come back. He uncorked the bottle for her and slid it over the countertop. She caught it in her organic hand. Kelsey took a sip of it and set it gently on the table. She lifted her hands to sign again.
“Do you know where Saffron is?”
Jonah’s face fell. “Always so business-minded, Kel. Why do you want to know?” He crossed his arms and glowered at her.
Kelsey paused. “To make amends,” she signed back. But that wasn’t the truth, not even close. She wasn’t sure how much he knew, but Kelsey wanted to make Saffron pay for the suffering she inflicted on her all those years ago. Maybe Jonah could read that on her face. But it didn’t matter to her. “I miss her a lot.” The signs felt vile on her hands and face, but she tried to keep face as best as she could. Her expression fell flat.
Jonah pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head. Regardless of whatever he found in her expression, he began signing again. “There were rumors of her being in Haunted Skyway. I don’t know why in the Spiral she would want to go there. It’s a mad, mad place.”
Kelsey’s eyebrow raised. What Jonah said about the skyway itself was indeed true. Undead plagued the skyway like nobody’s business. Between the undead pirates and the sky snakes made of bones, venturing in there was a madman’s errand. But if there was anything Saffron liked, it was spooky aesthetics and anything Hoodoo-related she could get her hands on. The skyway was filled with bad mojo according to Old Scratch, but it would be a perfect draw for Saffron. It was too early to tell for sure, but that would be the place to start.
She went to sign again, but found that Jonah’s attention had been pulled away by another patron flapping their hand in his periphery. Kelsey took this brief moment of reprieve to sip from her bottle of Yum and let it soothe her soul. The body of it was pleasantly heavy on her tongue, with a fruity and floral flavor that almost reminded her of lavender. It was a comfort she needed given the arduous task ahead of her. She would have to thank Captain Gunn’s corpse later for the bastard’s ingenious idea to bottle it.
Jonah returned. “Anyway, yeah. Haunted Skyway. People have told me she’s hanging around her. Some brave folks are saying she was last spotted in Miranda.”
Her eyes widened. “Miranda?!”
He nodded. “I don’t know why, nothing good came of that place.”
She agreed. It was where they had taken down Captain Blood, but the sheer sight of that ghost town left lasting memories on herself and Jonah. The undeath and trauma alone had been suffocating. Saffron, on the other hand, was eager to explore the town despite the horrible tragedy that occurred there years prior to their intervention. Jonah and Kelsey looked at her like she was crazy then. Saffron, of course, didn't care.
“If I had to guess, she found something else magical about that town.” Jonah rolled his eyes. “You’d best stay out of that skyway, Kel. Find a way for her to come to you. Talk then.”
Kelsey wanted to retort that she didn’t have time to find an artifact that Saffron would like, but she kept her hands and face together on that one.
As she raised her hands to sign, Jonah had once again been pulled away by other customers. Kelsey opted to leave him be. She had finished her first bottle of Yum and found herself craving a second. Another bartender stepped out from the back and got to work, Kelsey asked them for another bottle. She slid the coins just as they had slid the bottle to her.
It would be a long while before Kelsey would ever be able to have an evening like this. She decided she would make the most of it. The exhaustion from all the sailing she had done these past few weeks was wearing on her. She was eager to spend the night on dry land for once. Tonight, she decided, her crew could wait. She could spare a little time to rest before the arduous task ahead of her.
Kelsey was halfway through her third bottle of Yum when Jonah appeared and tapped her shoulder, startling her from her thoughts. She glanced at the lit candle he had in one of his hands and raised her brow. He motioned for her to follow him, and they went over to one of the secluded tables underneath the second floor. He set the candle in the middle of the table. It illuminated the space between them and not much else.
“I’m on break,” he signed. “Tell me what’s really going on. I know you wouldn’t look for Saffron just for that, Kel.” He scowled at her. “There’s more to this.”
Kelsey sighed. So he had spotted her lie after all. She pursed her lip, trying to put her thoughts together into an acceptable explanation. She chewed on her lip, glancing at the table, the floor and anything that wasn’t Jonah. But in her peripheral vision, she got the impression he was still scowling at her. Her expression slipped somewhere between sorrowful and earnest, perhaps both.
“Can you promise you won’t be angry with me?”
Jonah raised a brow. “I can’t. But if it’s why I think you’ve been missing for all these years, then…”
Her face fell. “I’ve been forced to work with the Armada. To make a long story short, they saved my life, and as a result I have a debt to pay to them.”
“So the rumors were true. About you working with them.”
She nodded slowly. She glanced away, only turning back as he signed.
Jonah pinched the bridge of his nose. “And even with what they did to my parents, you’re still just going to help them anyway?”
“I’m at their gunpoint, Jonah. I can’t do much else. Hell, I’m lucky to be out here by myself right now.”
He let out a long sigh. “Okay, fine. So how does Saffron play into this? Why do you need her?”
Kelsey’s lips stretched into a frown. She explained her side of the story: that the Supreme Commander believed that she would also be a threat to his operations if she wasn’t dealt with right away. So as punishment for her previous failure, she was sent to capture Saffron, alive ideally. At least, that was partially true. That was all he needed to know.
In reality, Kelsey was the one who volunteered Saffron as a target. She was still angry with Saffron for setting her up all those years ago, only to take the fall for Saffron’s smuggling operations. She had no qualms about carrying out this mission, even after the trio worked together for Marco Pollo’s Map post-Erebus breakout. But those days were long gone, and any truce they had was dust in Cool Ranch’s winds. Jonah retired with some of Pollo’s gold to take over the Desert Rose, and Saffron had gone her own way altogether.
“I haven’t been told good things about Saffron, either. I heard she was amassing an undead crew. An army, some called it.”
Kelsey’s eyes widened. “Why?” Her expression shifted into confusion and concern.
Jonah shook his head slowly and shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know, Kel. But even if it’s for the Armada, you still have the best chance of stopping whatever scheme she’s got going on. She’s going on a dark path that’s only getting darker, and I wouldn’t be enough to save her anyhow.”
“Jonah…” she sighed. Her shoulders slumped and she leaned against the table. “You know, I really did try to continue our work after Cool Ranch. But at Knossos…” she paused as she manually signed the name of the island. “Between the Minotaur’s sons and the Armada ambushing us there, I didn't have a choice. The only way I was going to leave there alive was with them.”
“Kel, you don’t need to explain yourself. I trust your judgement in whatever it is that you’re doing.” He lowered his head and continued signing. “But please, make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons.”
Kelsey furrowed her brow. She really couldn’t discern what was what anymore.
Jonah stood up from the table and took the candle with him. He extinguished it with a quick breath. Kelsey followed quickly and grabbed his hand.
“Can I stay overnight in one of your rooms?”
Jonah nodded. He retreated to the back of the bar once more. Kelsey fished out a pouch of gold from an interior pocket and counted out the gold for one and a half night’s stay. When Jonah returned with the keys, Kelsey handed it to him. He counted quickly, then looked at her confused.
“Please, keep it. You need it more than I do.”
“Thank you,” he signed, the back of his flat hand extending towards her, and led her upstairs to a door on the side of the floor.
The door opened up into a mildly dusty hallway, with many more doors lining it. He led her to one at the end of the hallway on the back wall and gave her the keys.
“Here you go. Best room on the block. Return the keys to the barkeep in the morning.” He turned and walked away, but stopped and turned back to her. “And Kel, please come back sometime. Knowing you, you’re probably gonna set off at sunrise. Just…tell me what happens.”
Kelsey half-smiled and chuckled to herself. “You got me. I will though.” Whether it was a half-truth or an outright lie, Kelsey couldn’t tell. After everything that would happen, there was some part of her that believed that Jonah would hate her guts just as much as Kelsey hated Saffron’s.
Jonah left her to the comfort and privacy of the guest room, which was rather quaint. She sighed and undressed into her undergarments. The room got chillier as she did so, making the bed all the more inviting. She decided her crew could wait for a little bit. She wanted to sleep on dry land just this once, she got the feeling that she wouldn’t have this luxury for a long, long while.
She plopped on the bed and got to work unstrapping her prostheses for her left arm and left leg. As she gently pulled off the arm, she admired the intricate details required to craft such a sensitive thing. The design was partially her own, perfected by the Armada’s–no, Kane’s–intervention. She set her metal limb aside and looked at the stump that was the upper half of her forearm. The illusion of connectivity she had shattered, and she waved it about uselessly, if only for her amusement and no one else’s. She did the same to her leg, stripping it down to the barest half-limb. She ran her hand over the stump. Despite it being removed years ago by some of Valencia’s finest surgeons, she couldn’t ever not be amazed by it.
Kelsey got comfortable underneath the bed sheets and let her mind wander. First about Saffron, then Jonah, and where she would be after all of this. Would she even be the same person? A vague unsettling feeling crept into her stomach. It was too early to make any sort of prediction. But with the news that Saffron was amassing an undead crew, she found it harder to get comfortable. What in the bloody biscuits of Marleybone could she possibly be doing this for?
It didn’t take long before the desire to rest overtook her.
When the sun shone warm beams of light through her window, Kelsey stirred. She awoke from a deep and comfortable sleep and sat up in her bed. She rubbed the sleep away from her eyes and mentally planned out her day.
She would leave the inn and set sail alongside her crew for the Haunted Skyway within the hour. She was not thrilled to be returning there, as she was certain that the Armada’s intervention had awakened Captain Blood and put the skyway in the state that it was. She wasn’t eager to return to Miranda either, as after the game between Death and Captain Blood, she was sure it would be a ghost town in the truest sense of the phrase. Too quiet for comfort. Even subtle movements wouldn’t go unnoticed.
And it was also in the Haunted Skyway where she destroyed Deacon. She wasn’t sure if he had forgiven her for that one, or if he ever would. She had an inexplicable sense of sympathy for him, though she would never admit that to her friends or either of her crews.
But most of all, it was also where she’d find one of her former best friends gathering an army of undead pirates for Saint-Fido-knows-what purpose. The threat of the Armada aside, none of this situation had good prospects for the rest of the Spiral.
Kelsey wasted no time getting ready and leaving the Desert Rose Inn. The air still felt cool and dry, making it a pleasant time to leave. She hurried past the folks in the early morning, barely slapping the room key on the counter for the bartender to take back. She jogged out of the doors into Tumbleweed, and down the rail to the docks.
The board was already waiting for her when she reached the docks. She carefully climbed it, trying to avert her gaze from the skyway below. She didn’t have time for those intrusive thoughts to play now. When she was fully boarded, Kelsey caught sight of a certain clockwork Marine leaning nonchalantly against one of the masts.
“It is about time you showed up,” Custos Sentus said, his hollow eyes meeting hers.
Kelsey folded her arms. Her brows furrowed. “I thought my instructions to stay below decks until I returned were abundantly clear, Sentus.”
“It was too warm.”
Her eye twitched. “I don’t have time for this today,” she groaned. She glanced over to the Captain’s Quarters, where Parallax waited, peering through the circular window in the door. Kelsey motioned for her to come out.
She must have spied the concerned look on Kelsey’s face as she hurried over to her position. “Is everything alright, Captain?”
She shook her head. “Not in the slightest. Gather the rest of the crew and prepare to set sail. We’re going to Haunted Skyway.”
