WIP Weekend - Wolfwren. Wolfwrenkend. Is that anything?
I'm having a very tough week, so the writing is not going great. When I'm stressed I have a tendency to start things instead of keep working, so alongside the Wolfwren fic I'm already publishing (part 3 soon!), I started another. Here's all of it so far I guess
Tumblr media
They were five cycles behind Baylan Skoll and the gap was getting was wider. Traveling with the Noti made them slow, even if Baylan was still on foot, but with Shin Hati and her bandits still out there Ahsoka and Sabine couldn't leave them undefended. At first, Sabine was impatient, and frustrated at Ahsoka for not explaining where they were going - but the closer they got to the mountain the more on edge Ahsoka became.
Sabine's connection to the Force was still tenuous most of the time, but she felt more and more like Ahsoka was cutting herself off from her and she had no idea why. They hadn't argued - yet - but things on the ship were tense and rather than stay aboard as it hovered along on a quarter power, Sabine opted to move into Ezra's pod. It was built for a Noti, so it was far too small, but it was good to have her own space separate from Huyang and Ahsoka. One of the Noti - who didn't seem to have individual names, as far as she could decipher their language - had adopted the Howler she called Mirshko, which meant she just had space to stretch her legs from the bed to the kitchen counter while she looked through the stuff Ezra had left behind.
Most of it was junk - scraps of wood he used to carve the Alliance symbols for the Noti and the hand tools he used to do it, a few drained power cells, and empty ration crates he must have stolen from Thrawn's star destroyer - but there was a neat little wooden box that caught her attention. It reminded her of her own memory box, now billions of light years away on Lothal, only Ezra had clearly made his by hand. Inside she found fragments of Ezra's two broken holocrons - Jedi and Sith artifacts she still didn't understand - and the smashed remains of his first lightsaber. She smiled at the memory of him sprinting into battle with a burst of blaster fire from the ridiculous hilt before it sparked to life and split a stormtrooper helmet down the middle. The crystal from it now sat in the hilt of his new lightsaber, but Sabine still wondered why he'd turned down the one he had given her all those years ago. She'd never got the chance to ask.
Sabine sighed and closed the box. It was getting late. If she went up to the ship now, Huyang would prepare her a warm drink before she went to bed. Ahsoka hadn't returned yet from scouting their route ahead, which used to worry Sabine. Now Ahsoka spent more time on the path following that strange white Convor than she did with the Noti convoy, barely sleeping or eating. Sabine had never seen the bird before, but Ezra had told her how it always seemed to show up just before Ahsoka did, and when they had all thought Ahsoka was dead she had painted it on her pauldron in remembrance. That all seemed such a long time ago now, especially given it had all happened in a distant galaxy. Ahsoka seemed at peace with the idea of never returning home, but Sabine hoped every day for a pod of Purrgils to appear overhead to carry her away. But Ahsoka had made it very clear that if Baylan Skoll reached the mountain unchallenged, something terrible would be unleashed. He had to be stopped, and it was all Ahsoka seemed to think about.
Sabine had given up worrying about her Master and for now she'd rather not subject herself to Huyang's company, pleasant though it was. She had to crouch to use anything in the kitchen, and she'd found it was much more convenient to sit cross-legged on the floor while she made her evening meal and before-bed drink. That was a tradition that dated back to the Ghost - Hera used to make warm milk for everyone before they shut down for the night. Zeb insisted on it long after Ezra and Sabine had grown out of it, and it continued until their victory on Lothal. Until they went their separate ways. She missed the good old days, when they were all together still. Being a squad commander during the official Galactic Civil War had been trying, and then Ahsoka's return and attempts to train her before the Empire obliterated Mandalore, and her family along with it…
There was a clatter as Sabine put the delicate Noti tea set down too hard.
"Karabast," she cursed under her breath. Nothing was broken though, and she picked up the small cup and blew steam from the pale pink liquid inside. It wasn't as sweet as the blue milk she was used to, and she wished she had a few meiloorun flowers to drop in, but it was warm and comforting, and it would soothe her enough to sleep. Sabine took a long sip and then started on her armour. Beskar was comfortable enough that she could sleep in it, but it weighed heavy on her of late and she'd felt the need to take it off more and more since the war ended. She changed out of her underarmour into the tank top and loose trousers she wore for training and clambered awkwardly into the small bed to finish her drink and go to sleep.
-
Shin Hati watched from the crest of the hill overlooking the Noti camp, waiting for the ship to take the bait and move off. The Noti were immaterial, and she knew she wouldn't stand a chance against the Togruta Jedi even with her bandits, but the Mandalorian… she could take her. Shin had watched quietly for days now, and she knew Wren's routine probably better than she did herself. The bandits she had sent after Tano would prompt her to call her ship to return her to the convoy, which would give her a narrow window to get in, kill the Mandalorian, and get out. The idea that Wren's Master would be signing her death warrant with her arrogance brought a grim smile to her face.
Finally, she saw the engines flare and the ship gradually accelerated away from the Noti camp - clearly, the droid didn't want to wake anyone. Shin silently thanked him for his courtesy as she hurried down the hill and into the camp. Nobody on guard. No sensors or traps. Occasionally Wren planted proximity explosives around the approach to the camp, but she was sloppy and only seemed to bother when she'd seen wild Howlers. Tonight, the path to her pod was clear. As she advanced, she unclipped her lightsaber from her hilt.

One of the kindest things our therapist ever said to us, when we were struggling with coming to terms with how many of us there are in the system, was that our system is exactly the size it needed to be for us to survive until this day.
And I found it easier to be grateful for our complexities and structure after that.
I try to apply it to other things when they're getting muddled now, too.
Our protectors are exactly as defensive as they needed to be to survive.
We are exactly as many as we needed to be in order to be here now.
Our perpetrators and persecutors are exactly as angry (and loyal, and violent, and determined) as they had to be.
The parts who fawn, who freeze, who forget, who remember, who worry, who bite our tongue for us when they don't think they're ready to speak yet: exactly as they all should be. We are all who we had to be in order to see this moment. And this moment is not so bad.

Raffi/Seven drivel concerning this spoiler photo for S3E6.
Any version of this would be wonderful 🙏
She looked amazing. That unruly mane pulled back as neatly as possible. Seven's gaze swept quickly over the woman. Sudden emotion hit her stomach when she saw the belt. Had Raffi really been wearing Seven's Fenris Ranger belt her entire time under cover? Seven remembered giving it to her. She'd wanted to give her something more meaningful, but practicality won out. She knew the belt would be useful and that was what Raffi needed.
Now here she was, after so long, standing on a transporter pad and staring at her. Seven didn't have to wonder if the affection was still there. When she looked at Raffi's face, those signature puppy eyes were full of familiar emotion and Seven knew the same look was mirrored in her own gaze. Raffi looked like she wanted to come to her and Seven wanted nothing more.
As Worf stepped off the transporter pad to greet Picard and Riker, Raffi stepped off and came straight toward her. Fighting tears, Seven welcomed her with open arms, still shocked that she was here. They wrapped around each other, faces buried in one another's necks, holding tight.
Coming apart, Seven didn't even notice a tear that had escaped until Raffi wiped it away. They both smiled and she wanted to kiss her so badly.
Raffi sniffled and then smiled wider. "You look damn good in that uniform."
It was inappropriate in this setting, Seven knew, but she couldn't help it. They'd been apart so long and she smelled so good and the first thing out of her mouth was a compliment. Seven stop resisting the urge. She leaned in and captured Raffi's lips, holding her there.
Finally, their lips separated with a tiny, perfect sound and they were smiling again, foreheads pressed together. Only then did the noise of someone clearing their throat alarm them.
Practically jumping away from each other, their heads snapped up to see Jean Luc gesture to the door.
"Shall we, ladies," he said, eyebrows raised.
A little embarrassed, Seven and Raffi slipped by him into the corridor. Seven could wait to get Raffi alone later.

Renegades Thoughts
Spoilers ahead!
----
There are things I really enjoyed about Renegades. It's just that it's shortcomings kind of overwhelm everything else. Like, they have the perfect characters to carry a truly interesting story right there, and they chose to just... not. I saw so much potential as the books progressed that every refusal to go down an untraveled road just got me more and more frustrated.
Adrian's and Nova's team members are adorable and convincingly normal. Unlike the adult superheroes, the patrol team are all teenagers who could be anyone's brother, anyone's sister. They're people first and foremost. AND they have cool and unique superpowers! Girl who can transform into a swarm of butterflies, anyone? And being one of the most badass heroes among them? And Adrian brings his drawings to reality, which doesn't seem all that valuable in combat on the surface, but in execution lends Adrian a versatility that others don't have.
As far as the plot goes, the fact that the story plays with superhero archetypes meant that I was looking for a predictable/archetypal story structure. In my head, it should have gone thus: Book 1 = ends with Nova being found out, Book 2 = consists of heroes vs villains with Nova and Adrian on opposite sides, and Book 3 = Nova and Adrian realizing the hero/villain conflict of their parents' generation doesn't have to be their story, and find a way to come back together to navigate a path of their own, joined by others their age from both sides.
That's not what I got.
I read these all back to back, so it all kind of runs together in my brain (especially since I listened on audiobook), but iirc Nova isn't even suspected until Book 3, and even though she's arrested, she's ultimately acquitted in short order. She's not TRULY found out until the finale.
The FINALE.
She then proceeds to stand by while Adrian is quite literally tortured, flayed even, with hardly a word of protest. It turned my stomach to know that this girl I've come to enjoy so much suddenly lacked any spine whatsoever, and it was enough for me to feel like Adrian's quick forgiveness after wasn't actually earned. Nova ends the story still in a moral deficit, which was kind of lazy. Like-- why.
I also expected Nova to grow into her own identity, as she starts of executing someone else's plan to infiltrate the Renegades, and then ends up crafting her own plan when she's suddenly required to maintain the facade longer than expected. In my mind, I expected her to actually take on a role of authority, but any time she's undermined or in conflict with other villains she shrinks back into obedience. When she finally acts to her own morals, it's not because she's grown and gained unique experiences, but because it turns out her uncle lied to her about the deaths of her parents and baby sister Evie.
Speaking of, what REALLY gets my goat is that the most interesting twist on the story, the thing that would have 100% redeemed this story if it had been explored in the main text, happens in the EPILOGUE.
See, there's this character we meet in the same scene we meet Nova. Nova is on the street during a parade, and a young pickpocket tries to steal her bracelet-- the last token Nova has of her parents, her most prized possession. The pickpocket turns out to be Maggie, codename Magpie, a Renegade who has a talent for identifying and unearthing valuable items. From then on, Nova positively loathes Maggie, and the feeling is mutual. They hate each other's guts, and can barely be in the same room without fighting each other.
It's actually quite refreshing that Nova doesn't suddenly lapse into mother mode, as other stories may be wont to do. Two girls hate each other-- it happens! And it's 100% in character on both girls' parts.
But here's the thing: in the finale, Maggie is revealed to be Evie. You know, Nova's murdered baby sister whose death motivates every one of Nova's actions for three whole novels? Yeah. That Evie. No one knows, not even them. Maggie was delivered to an orphanage as an infant, after her parents were found murdered and her older sister missing, never to be heard from again. Maggie grew up hoping that her sister would re-appear and claim her, but she's abandoned that dream-- she's far too cynical and streetwise for that.
But imagine. If the story had let Maggie and Nova learn the truth... How would they reconcile? Would they believe it? Would they eventually come together and love each other like they always dreamed of doing? THAT would have been 100% more compelling than the lukewarm commentary of the hero/villain dichotomy that we got. That could have easily been the main focus of Book 3.
Ugggggggghhhhh... it makes me want to tear my hair out.
Especially because there's been no mention of Marissa Meyer of returning to the world of Renegades.
On a side note, as a kid I had a habit of fancasting the characters in almost every book I read. I've mostly grown out of that, but this series did have a character (Nova's uncle) that instantly put an actor in my head-- Phil LaMarr, who I know predominantly as Malefic J'onzz in CW's Supergirl. Nova's uncle Ace had such a distinct presentation and delivery that LaMarr's face was the only thing that popped into my brain. (And in casting LaMarr, it would suggest that Nova would be black or at least mixed race, which opens up a whole world of wonderful casting choices.)
So-- yeah. Any story where the most interesting and compelling plot twist happens in the epilogue is certainly on the struggle bus.
