Chapter Three - Sometimes it’s just a date
You don't like water polo. Actually, you don't like watching the water polo team.
With next week being finals week, you would like to have a quiet period. But then, the track and field and water polo finals are making the athletes restless, and you have to deal with the excitement of your colleagues around the halls.
Maybe Natasha is right, you are pretty grumpy when it comes to socializing.
Participation in a sports team is mandatory from the first year on. Principal Thanos had approved this rule as an "incentive to healthy living," and only students with a medical condition could get away with it. You considered falsifying a medical history many times, but eventually you agreed to join the lacrosse team. You kept your performance average, just to maintain your grade. And even when the coach saw potential in you, you told her that you had no interest in participating in the championships.
And then you were sitting on the team bench, watching your team play on the field while the crowd cheered as you watched. All sports were encouraged, after all, usually all students attended all kinds of games. You watched Natasha wave to you from the stands, and you smiled back.
You were almost falling asleep, then a chorus of startled exclamations coming from the audience startled you, and you looked quickly at the field.
Your teammate, Gamora, suffered a foul and was being helped off the field by her teammates. You looked down the field with a frown, hoping that she was all right. But then she was taken off the field on a stretcher, her knee bandaged. It didn't take long before the coach came to you and signaled that you were going to have to replace the girl.
Letting out a grumble of protest, you stood up, grabbing the bat the coach offered you, and stepped onto the field.
Your approach to playing was interesting. You were aggressive and impatient, but efficient. You scored three points, and tried not to be bothered by the attention you were getting. And then, when your team won, you tried not to push the girls who jumped on you during the celebration.
As you joined the team in the locker room, the coach asked to speak to you privately.
- I wanted to say that I was surprised by your performance, but in fact I always knew what you could do. - She commented as soon as you were alone in her room, inside the locker room. You shifted the weight of your feet, awkwardly.
- Thanks, I guess. - You say, and the teacher smiles tenderly at you.
- Tell me, Y/L, do you have plans for college? - she asks, leaning on her desk.
- Not really, Coach. - You say. - I sent some applications, but after my suspension, I don't think I will have much of a chance.
- You know that something like a position on a regular team can count in your favor. - She comments, and you shrug.
- I have only played in two games so far. - You hit back. She smiles.
- Oh yes, and you performed flawlessly. - She says. - What I'm saying is, I could write you a letter of recommendation. If you commit to play with us until the end of the school year, of course.
You frown, thinking about it.
- I wouldn't want to take Gamora's place.
The teacher laughs, shrugging her shoulders.
- Don't worry about it, we can arrange the team for you to play together. Besides that, unfortunately Gamora will not participate in at least two games because of her injury. And she will be happy to know that you are helping the team to win.
You nod, putting your hands in your pockets.
- Okay, I'll take it then. - You say. - Only for the letter of recommendation of course. - You joke, and the coach goes to one of the drawers. She pulls out a first team uniform. - This is yours. - She hands it to you. - And please try to control your temper on the field.
The coach winks at you, and you laugh slightly, accepting the uniform. You nod slightly and walk out of the room toward the showers.
- I can't believe you're a jock now! - Natasha jokes when you tell her you joined the team. You laugh, pushing her slightly. You are sitting at the tables in the outdoor cafeteria during the second break.
- Please don't say that. - You say playfully. Nat just smiles, taking a bite out of her snack.
- But anyway. - she says after a moment. - Are you still going to the concert on Saturday?
You let out a sigh and Nat looks at you curiously.
- I'll tell you something, and you promise not to hate me?
Nat laughs, imitating a promise sign, and you shake your head, smiling.
- Go ahead, say it. You're making me curious. - She asks. You laugh, trying to build up courage.
- I have to tell Carol I'm not interested. - You begin, and Nat raises her eyebrows in surprise. - I'm liking someone else.
- Wow, Jones really got to you? - She assumes, and you laugh, denying it with your head. - Wait, there's a third girl? My God, you're unstoppable.
You laugh ruefully, and Nat follows you. You swallow dryly before speaking and look at the table where you are sitting.
- I am in love with Wanda Maximoff.
Nat lets out a surprised exclamation, and then laughs, thinking you were joking. And then she notices your expression, and widens her eyes in surprise.
- My God, you are serious! - she exclaims. But then she smiles at you, and puts her hand on your forearm. - Hey, I don't have a problem with that. I was just a little surprised.
- Really? - you ask with a sigh of relief. Nat smiles at you.
- Now explain to me how this happened. - She asks, cupping her face in her left hand as she looks at you intently. You take a sip of your soda before speaking.
- Actually, this has been going on for some time. - You confess. - Me and Wanda... well. The first person who knew I liked girls was her. - You tell, and Nat lets out a surprised exclamation, but does not interrupt you. - We have been in the same class since elementary school. When we were in eighth grade, she saw me kissing Mary Jane Watson behind the soccer fields. I asked her not to tell anyone, and she never did. - You say, and Nat listens attentively. - And then she became who she is now, and any interaction we had seemed like we were going to jump around each other's necks at any moment.  - You sighed. - And then, after the soccer game, I gave her an orgasm against the locker room wall.
- Wait, what? - exclaimed Natasha in surprise. - My god, you had sex with Wanda Maximoff? - She practically screamed and you raised your hands and waved for her to keep her voice down. Nat laughed with a mixture of disbelief and excitement. - I can't believe it. I don't even know what to think about it.
You mumbled with embarrassment, looking away.
- Just keep it down, please. - You asked, and Nat laughed.
- Are you two in some kind of secret relationship now? - she asked, and you laughed ironically.
- Not at all. - You say. - She completely ignored me after that. And then we argued during Ms. Hill's class.
- Shit, I'm sorry about that. But are you still willing to take this anywhere? Since you are going to dismiss Carol.
You blink slightly, thoughtfully. Then you shrug.
- I'm only going to dismiss Carol because it's not fair to be with her while thinking about another girl. - You explain. - And I don't expect Wanda to want anything to do with me anyway.
- I see. - Nat says, giving you a sad smile. - But I think she would be very stupid to let someone like you slip away.
You smile sadly, and you go back to eating. Before long the break is over, and you share Nat's displeasure at having to go to the health class.
Health classes are awkward. At least now that you and Natasha were friends, you were distracted by her jokes. Professor Wade Wilson was known for his humorous and completely unfiltered attitude during class. He made jokes and pranks, and didn't care much if the students were actually learning something. You remember when you were learning about the effects of alcohol on the body and he brought a bottle of whiskey and shared it among the students. Counselor Fury was not happy at all.
But occasionally you learned very important things in class, like how to clean wounds made in laboratories, for example.
You figured he would follow the programmed curriculum, but you should know better. Wilson came into the room, sat down at his own desk and signaled for everyone to go to their seats. Nat exchanged an amused look with you.
- Good morning, brats. - He said as he took something out of his pocket. The room erupted in giggles and comments as he held up a rubber penis and vagina. - Let's talk about sex today.
- Finally, eh Mr. Wilson! - shouted Tony Stark ironically, causing the class to laugh. You saw him give Pepper Potts a mischievous look, while the girl just smiled and fiddled with her hair.
- Well, I need to teach you how to put on condoms first. - says the professor with a slight irony in his voice. - Because of course you are all innocent in this matter.
The class laughed, but you were distracted scribbling in your notebook. The professor leaned over to read the attendance list on his desk.
- I need two of you to demonstrate your knowledge to me. - He says. - Stark and Y/L/N come forward please.
Nat nudges you with her elbow and you frown. She nods toward the desk, and Professor Wilson is already looking at you. You mumble a "shit" before getting up and walking to the front of the room.
- Please demonstrate. - He says handing a condom to you and one to Tony, who gives you an angry look, and you roll your eyes. Tony moves toward the plastic vagina, but Wilson laughs, putting his hand in your way. - The other prosthesis, Mr. Stark.
You watch Tony's red cheeks with disbelief, and you also hear the giggles that circulate around the room. Tony quickly opens the condom with his teeth and puts on the rubber penis with his shaking hands. Then he turns to the class, putting his hands in his pockets.
- Who can tell me what Mr. Stark did wrong? - asks the professor, but no one raises their hand. You wonder if people just don't want to say that Tony Stark was wrong, or if they really didn't know. - Really, guys, nobody?
- He bit the package, sir. - You grumble, feeling all the stares on you. Wilson lets out a happy exclamation as he looks at you.
- Yes, exactly, Miss Y/L/N. - He says, looking around the room again. - When you bite the condom wrapper, you can damage the condom, and consequently, take away its effectiveness. The class takes note of the information passed on. - Now, Y/N, please. Demonstrate how to use the female condom.
You let out a sigh, and turn to the table, without preventing other students from seeing what you are doing. Quickly, you open the package and put the condom on the prosthetic.  Professor Wilson lets out a chuckle, congratulating you for handling it correctly, but as you turn around, you hear Tony Stark comment loudly:
- With so much practice in real life, it should be easy. - He says, and the class bursts into giggles.
- Stark. - The professor says with a scolding tone, but you assume a wry posture.
- Don't be like that, Tony. I'm sure Steve will be happy to let you practice with him. - You fight back, and the laughter swirls around you.
- Look, here you bitch... - Tony steps forward and the professor stands in front of him, with a serious expression. You think this is the first time you've seen him angry.
- You two come with me immediately.
And so you end up sitting in Nicky Fury's office again, with Tony Stark in the chair next to you. You both stand with your arms crossed and looking straight ahead as Professor Wilson explains the confusion in his class. Fury nods and says that he will handle everything, and the professor gives him an understanding smile before leaving the room.
- I have been waiting to talk to you two. - says Fury as he sits down at his desk. - Who would like to start?
- I have nothing to say. - says Tony in a harsh tone. You want to punch him again.
- That's too bad, Mr. Star. - says Fury. - You will stay here until someone tells me the nature of this conflict.
You let out an irritated snort.
- I've told you before, Fury. - You say. - Stark is an arrogant piece of shit who has no respect for anyone.
- You're fucking insane, girl! - Tony cuts you off, and you refuse to look at him. Fury lets out a sigh.
- Please, I will not tolerate this kind of verbal aggression in my office. - He says. - If you don't answer me, I will simply recommend that you both be expelled.
You and Tony are silent, both with furious expressions. But then you remember the promise you made to the coach, and let out a sigh.
- I punched Tony in the face at his eighteenth birthday party. - You confess, surprising them both.
A moment passes, and you think Fury is finally going to expel you, but then Tony speaks up next to you.
- I provoked her. - He confesses. You look surprised, and Fury just waits for Tony to clarify. He lets out an impatient sigh before speaking. - I followed her out and said some rude stuff.
Fury is thoughtful for a few minutes, and then he makes some notes in his notebook. You began to drum your fingers against your thigh, uncomfortable.
- Would you like to tell me exactly why you did that Tony? - Fury asked.
Tony let out an impatient grunt. And many moments passed before he spoke again.
- I don't know, okay? - He says, running his hands through his hair nervously. - I only saw her kissing a girl and then I was outside. I didn't want her at my party.
- I should have known you were a homophobic jerk. - You say, and Tony tells you to go fuck yourself. Fury warns you both again.
- Tony, I've heard rumors about your relationship with Mr. Rogers. - Fury begins and Stark straightens his posture, his face red. You think the conversation is getting interesting. - Don't you think, perhaps, your reaction to seeing Miss Y/L/N has something to do with it?
- I don't want to talk about it. - Tony grumbles. You stand there thoughtfully, understanding what Fury meant. He had suggested that the only reason Tony hated you so much, besides being a complete idiot, was because he rejected his own sexuality.
- We're going to talk about this privately, Mr. Star. - Announces Fury. - That will be my last warning to you two. No more fighting. If I hear that you two have renewed conflicts, I will recommend your immediate expulsion.
You and Tony nod, and Fury releases you with a detention card. You grumble, but leave the room, closing the door while Tony and Fury stand talking in private.
You never imagined that you would see Pietro Maximoff in detention. But when you thought about it, it actually made sense.
Sitting in the back of the room, you were even more surprised when he looked up at you, and gave you a shy smile. You blinked in surprise and looked away.
Professor Charles Xavier only taught history to the senior year, which left him with many free periods throughout the day, so he was also responsible for the detention class. It worked well, since it seemed that no one could hide anything from her, and detention ended up being quite efficient.
He came into the classroom with a book in his hand, and sat down, staying for many minutes without saying anything at all. And then he asked everyone to pair up, and you looked incredulously at Pietro Maximoff as he sat down in front of you.
- You're kidding me, right? - you said as soon as he arrived. Peter laughed, shrugging his shoulders.
Before Pietro could say anything, Professor Xavier announced that the class should make a short summary of the last subject he taught in class, which drew a disgruntled gasp from the few students present.
You started to take the materials out of the backpack and put them on the table.
- I wanted to thank you. - Pietro said as the professor sat down. The class was buzzing with murmurs, all the students talking about their work, and Charles didn't seem to care, focused on his book. You looked at Pietro with your eyebrows raised, and he smiled wryly. - For helping me that day.
- It's a natural reaction, Maximoff. - You retort, looking away from him and start writing in your notebook. Pietro chuckles.
- Yeah, I know. - he says. - But still, thank you. The nurse told me that if you hadn't been so quick, I might have had an injury that would have prevented me from playing football.
You shrugged, not knowing what to say. You were silent for a few moments, each concentrated on his summary, and then Pietro stopped writing and you felt him looking at you.
- What is it now? - you asked without taking your eyes off the paper.
- Do you like music? - You raise your eyebrows incredulously as you look at him.
- Everybody likes music, what kind of question is that?
Pietro laughs awkwardly.
- Sorry, you're right. - he says humorously. - I actually meant, do you know "The Panthers"? They are a rock band. They are playing in town on Saturday and…
- Are you asking me out? - You blink in confusion. Pietro shrugs.
- As a thank you. It's not a date. - He adds quickly when he sees your expression. - I'm going to the show with some friends.
- I'm also going to the show. - You retort, and Pietro assumes a surprised but happy expression.
- Great, we can see each other there then!
- I guess. - You grumble, turning your attention back to the summary. Pietro smiles, and a moment passes before he hands you a small piece of paper with a phone number.
- Text me when you get there. So it'll be easier for us to meet. - he suggested.
You blinked in surprise, but remembering that Fury had told you to avoid conflict, you just put the paper in your pocket, and you and Pietro finished the exercise. He handed your summaries to the teacher, and sat down in front of you again. You left your hands in your pockets as he turned to you.
- What did you do to be here anyway? - you asked. Pietro stretched out his legs, leaning his back against the wall.
- I followed your lead. - He said humorously, and you frowned uncomprehendingly. He laughed, then clarified. - I punched Tony during practice.
You raised your eyebrows in surprise.
- Wow, I didn't see that one coming. - You say. - May I ask why?
- He said some things about my sister. - Pietro says, locking his jaw as if remembering the conflict. - And then I punched him in the mouth. - He grimaces and imitates the move with his hand, making you laugh slightly.
- What did he say? - You can't help the question from escaping your lips. Pietro doesn't seem to mind though, shrugging his shoulders.
- Stupid comments about her, sex stuff. - he says. - We were training and he decided he was free to talk about her body to everyone on the team.
You swallowed your anger, not wanting to show it to Pietro, choosing only to nod.
- When he does it with other girls is it okay then? - you tease without holding back. Pietro frowns, denying it with his head.
- Of course not. - he says, and straightens up. - Look, I know you have an opinion about me. But I'm not a complete idiot. I don't treat girls that way.
- Oh, right. - You say it with irony. Pietro laughs, knowing exactly what you're talking about.
- I am serious. - he says. - I know what the school says about me. I don't like commitment, and I've been with a lot of girls. But I didn't cheat on any of them. - He clarifies, shrugging his shoulders. - And I don't treat them like objects.
- Congratulations for doing the minimum. - You say a bit harshly, and Pietro laughs.
You fall silent again, and then Professor Xavier dismisses the class.
Pietro waves and smiles at you as you leave detention, and you think that maybe you have been teleported to a parallel reality.
Carol picks you up at your house. You both put on your leather jackets, and she thinks it' s pretty hot.
The Panthers' concert is very crowded, and it is held in an open field on the edge of town. When you arrive, Carol holds your hand to lead you to your group of friends. You don't mind.
You hug everyone, and mention that you like Thor's new haircut, who had cut his long hair and was wearing an earring in his left ear. You were talking for several minutes in the food cart area, since the show was going to take a while to start.
Then Pietro Maximoff saw you and waved excitedly, and his friends looked at you with a mixture of curiosity and incredulity. Natasha laughed softly in your ear before he approached.
- So glad you could make it! - he said cheerfully. You decided not to mention his choice of clothes, since Pietro came with the team jacket.
- Hi Pietro. - You greet awkwardly, but he looks cheerful, and greets all of your friends with a smile.
- Hey, you're owls, aren't you? - He says. - I've seen you at state when we played there last year!
Your friends smile and nod politely, and then Pietro looks around, and waves. A group of people join you all next. You feel your body tense up the moment Wanda Maximoff walks up to you, and then a deep irritation hits you as you notice a tall boy with his arms around her. You think you have seen him before in geography class. Also in the group are your classmates Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson, and Peter Parker, the last being a freshman. You barely register the words of introduction that Pietro makes, your attention completely on Wanda, who looks surprised and slightly embarrassed to see you.
Your friends greet Pietro's group, and you look away from Wanda to pay attention to his words.
- If you guys don't mind, can we all stay together? - Pietro suggests, and you want to scream that you can't bear to stand next to the boy holding Wanda without strangling him, but your friends agree, looking excited to interact with new people.
- Let's stay in the north stands, it's better to see. - Said Valkyrie signaling the direction, the group agreed and you started walking. Natasha hugged Clint and gave you a suggestive nod in the direction of Wanda, which made you roll your eyes in humor. And then Carol threw her arm over your shoulder, and you wanted to laugh at the deadly expression Wanda threw at you before looking forward. Carol didn't notice.
When you arrived at the chosen area, you sat down on the grass. The group was well-mixed, and everyone seemed to be talking to each other. You felt Wanda's gaze on your back, but you refused to look at her. Thor and Bucky handed out the snacks that they had bought with the group, and as you drank your soda, you felt Carol's hand on your thigh.
And then she kissed you, and you knew you had to talk to her. You asked her to walk with you, and you walked back to the entrance of the show, which was now completely empty.
It was quick, and impressive easy. Carol smiled and said that everything was fine, and said again that you never made promises to each other. She gave you a kiss on the cheek and went back to the group. You told her you would buy some candy before you went back.
When you reached the snack bar area, someone pulled you behind a pillar.
- I want to talk to you. - Wanda said angrily. You rolled your eyes impatiently, putting distance between your bodies.
- I'm all ears. - You said with irony.
- I don't want you dating anyone else.
You let out an incredulous laugh.
- You've got to be kidding me. - You spoke in anger. - Are you even listening to what you're saying now?
- Why are you going out with that girl? - Wanda asks in the same tone.
- You're a damn hypocrite, you know that? -You accuse her, moving closer. -Wanting to impose demands when you're having sex with that jerk.
Wanda rolls her eyes, and you think you might explode with rage. And then you grab her around the waist and push her against the pillar behind her. Wanda lets out a surprised exclamation and her gaze falls directly to your mouth.
- You think I don't know how you feel, don't you, Wanda? - You whisper, looking at her with a mixture of seriousness and desire. - Tell me, do you pretend it's me touching you when you're with him?
Wanda lets out a sigh, but lifts her head, not responding. You let out a wry laugh, and then you press your knee firmly against her core, and she shivers and lets out a low groan, closing her eyes tightly.
- Don't forget to moan my name tonight. - You say it against her ear, and then let go.
You walk back to the group, feeling hot and bothered. You exchange a look with Natasha, but say nothing.
Wanda comes back a little later, and during the entire show, you feel her looking at you.
You refuse Carol's ride when the show ends. She waves with a smile, and leaves. And then you wave goodbye to everyone, and decide to leave by bus. You liked public transportation because it helped you to think while you looked out the window.
- Be careful, troublemaker. - asks Nat as she gives you a hug goodbye. She is sleeping at Bruce's house and will not accompany you on the way back.
Pietro has had a few too many beers, and gives you a tight hug when he says goodbye, saying that the night was incredible. You laugh at his reaction. You don't say goodbye to Wanda.
And then you are walking to the bus stop, with your headphones on, and you almost stumble in shock when you feel someone touching your shoulder.
- Fuck, girl! - You complain as you turn around. - What is it now?- Go on a date with me. - Wanda says looking at you.
- What?
- Go on a date with me. - She repeats, smiling.
You blush, and look down at the floor, suddenly feeling very warm. You wave your hands inside your jacket pockets.
- Now?
Wanda nods, and you bite back a smile on your lips.
- Okay. - You agree.
You turn and sit down at the bus stop. Wanda sits quietly next to you. You raise your hand and take out one of your headphones, offering it to Wanda. She smiles when she accepts, and you listen to some music together while you wait for the bus.
Since the vast majority of places in town were closed at this time, you took Wanda to a place that wouldn't be.
When you worked at the junkyard, you discovered many interesting places when you had to pick up equipment for your boss. One of these places was the city's port.
You knew that there was a secluded area of the municipal harbor with an incredible view of the sea, and so you guided Wanda through the bars and down the concrete path. You sat on the edge, your feet dangling a few feet from the ocean below.
- How did you find this place? - she asks, staring at the landscape.
- Working at the junkyard made me explore the city. - You answer also looking straight ahead.
You are silent for a moment before you ask:
- What should we talk about, Wanda?
- Anything. - She says. - Or nothing at all.
You smile.
- I don't know what is going on between us. - You confess, and Wanda lets out a sigh.
She says nothing and you almost give up trying to talk about your relationship, and then she puts her hand on top of yours, looking at the ocean in front of you.
- I'll tell you one thing, and you promise not to freak out, okay? - she asks, and you nod.
Wanda looks down at her own lap, and takes a deep breath, as if she is taking courage.
- I think I'm in love with you. - She confesses, and you feel your heart race. - It's been a while, actually. I guess I just realized it now.
- How long?
- Do you remember when I saw you kissing Mary Watson in the eighth grade? - She asks and you nod. - I just... I didn't know why it bothered me. And then, you told me to keep it a secret and I got so jealous that every time I saw you I just wanted to slap you. And then we started to fight and I pushed all the feelings aside hoping they would go away. And then game night happened.
You remained silent as you absorbed Wanda's words. She spoke again before you could.
- Damn, I know this is a lot to absolve. - She says. - I understand if you just want sex. Or if you'd rather not talk to me anymore.
You interrupt her monologue with a kiss on the lips, which makes her gasp. But you pull away, smiling shyly at her.
- I'm in love with you too, Wanda. - You confess, and watch Wanda's cheeks turn red.
Wanda brings your mouths together again, and you kiss her intensely. You giggle with relief and happiness, and then Wanda hugs you around the neck, and you let your arms wrap around her tightly, sinking into her body heat as you close your eyes.
You hold each other for long minutes, until you break the embrace to look at Wanda tenderly. You find her to be the most beautiful girl you have ever seen. Running your fingers over her face, you smile tenderly.
- What will happen now? - you ask, and try not to be intimidated by Wanda's hesitation.
- I don't know. - She says. - I want to be with you.
- Are you ready to admit this to everyone?
Wanda closes her eyes for a moment, and you think she is going to deny it. But then she nods in agreement, and you feel a new surge of excitement hit you.
You let out a relieved laugh, and kiss Wanda's cheek, pulling her into a hug. She giggles against your grip. You then settle down, sitting side by side as you put an arm around her shoulders and she leans her head on your chest. Wanda intertwines your hands in her lap as you gaze out over the ocean in front of you.
- Do you really think Darcy and Elizabeth wouldn't be together? - she asks, and you laugh, not moving away.
- Actually, I just disagreed with you, because you're hot when you're mad. - You joked, making her laugh.
The night went by quickly after that. You and Wanda cuddled while talking about various random subjects. You watched the sunset together, and she kissed you hard before getting on the bus to her house.

43. Falling In Love With Best Friend's Partner (2.7k.......)
Obi-Wan’s kettle goes off with a whistle right as there’s a fierce banging on the door. He almost drops his favorite mug in surprise, which puts him in a bad mood from the get-go. But for the love of Christ, who would come call at his house at nine at night? It’s more than rude; it’s downright indecent.
He stalks through the house until he can unlock the door to give the person on his porch a piece of his mind, but then he sees who it is.
It’s Anakin, and he’s crying.
If there’s anything that can make Obi-Wan quiet his temper on a normal day, it’s Anakin Skywalker. A distressed Anakin Skywalker brings out every ounce of his compassion.
“Anakin?” He asks immediately, stepping forward to touch the man on his arm gently and guide him inside. He doesn’t even have to suppress a sigh when Anakin doesn’t remember to toe off his shoes in the entry way--that’s how worried he is at Anakin’s tears and the way they only increase in frequency and sound when Obi-Wan moves his hand to his back and pushes him further into his house, all the way to the dining table where he urges him to sit down.
Anakin still hasn’t said anything resembling actual words yet, so Obi-Wan goes to the kitchen to make them both a cup of tea. It’s either that or give into the temptation to thumb the tear tracks off of his cheeks and that’s a little more revealing than Obi-Wan likes.
He’s not that brave, for one.
For another, Anakin is a married man. A man married to one of Obi-Wan’s closest friends, a previous grad student turned co-author of at least seven publications, with more on the way. He can’t risk tenderly wiping away her husband’s tears because Obi-Wan Kenobi has been at least a little in love with him since they were introduced four years ago, when he’d swanned up to him holding two champagne glasses in one hand and stuck out the other to shake. “My wife talks about you nonstop, Professor,” he’d said. “I used to be so jealous until I sat in on one of your lectures when I was still in school. Made sense then.”
Obi-Wan had not known what to do with that, but had taken the proffered champagne glass and assured this strange man he had nothing to worry about.
After all, Obi-Wan wasn’t the sort of man to chase after former students or people in marriages.
Over the next few years, however, it became quite clear to him that there was a big addendum needed in his moral code: people in marriages to former students drew his eyes apparently the way no one else has ever managed to in his life.
Or perhaps it was just Anakin. Perhaps it’s always been just Anakin.
Coming to terms with the shameful, quiet love he carried for a man who flirts like it’s second nature and always has a warm touch or word to bestow on Obi-Wan had been difficult, to say the least.
Anakin’s wife had been one of Obi-Wan’s closest friends. His inconvenient and persistent feelings for Anakin had turned her into one thing only: his wife. They could not be friends when Obi-Wan spends half his nights wondering what it would be like to sleep with his arms around her husband. They could not be friends when the last dozen times the married couple had invited him over for dinner, he had paid more attention to her husband than to the food or to the other topics of conversation or to her.
And she has to know. She has to know why their latest paper has taken eight months to write. She has to have seen the way Obi-Wan perks up so obviously when Anakin brings his wife her lunch, the way he has to turn away from their chaste kisses, the way he listens keenly to any information she gives him on her husband, the way he had excused himself from the room when he heard her tell another colleague that they were trying for children.
In academia, you learn fairly quickly that it is useless to resent someone for having what you do not. It seems that Obi-Wan has to learn this lesson all over again when it comes to people. It’s hard. It’s selfish. He hates that he loves Anakin. He hates that he loves Anakin the way he does, that it’s been four years and he still loves him, that not even his happy marriage, his love for his wife, the fact that his wife is Obi-Wan’s friend, can change it.
Anakin considers them friends now, which is so much worse and yet still more than a pathetic old man like Obi-Wan deserves. Worse, because when Obi-Wan had started rejecting dinners at the Skywalker household, Anakin had pushed back with worry. When he’d noticed that Obi-Wan’s lunch most often consisted of whatever cold cut sandwich was on sale at the gas station next to campus, he’d started bringing Obi-Wan a lunch along with his wife. When Obi-Wan had stopped responding to his texts, he showed up to drag him to a night out.
Worse, because being Anakin’s friend is nothing like being his husband, and the differences make him ache as much as the acts of kindness make him want to weep.
It’s still more than Obi-Wan deserves. He knows that intimately, the way he knows that nothing can ever happen between the two of them because Anakin loves his wife. And his wife--
“She cheated on me,” Anakin gets out between uneven breaths.
Obi-Wan promptly drops his favorite mug and watches it shatter on the floor.
“Oh!” Anakin exclaims at the loud noise, peeking around the corner, and looking like he’s about to offer to help. Obi-Wan shoos him out of the kitchen, and grabs the remaining mug of tea to follow him. The mess can wait for a later time.
“What did you say?” he asks carefully, nudging the mug over to Anakin, who wraps his hands around it.
Anakin blinks up at him wetly. “Don’t make me say it again.”
Obi-Wan drags his chair closer and dares to lay a hand over Anakin’s arm, watching his face for any negative reaction. Anakin just looks at it though, as if he can’t even comprehend it.
“Please, tell me what happened,” he entreats softly.
Anakin blinks and takes a sip of the tea. It’s chamomile, which is the only tea blend Obi-Wan knows Anakin likes.
“I, um.” Anakin clears his throat and reaches up to wipe at his eyes. Obi-Wan thinks his breath leaves his body for a second when he sees the slighter lighter ring of skin around Anakin’s fourth finger. He never thought he’d see what that sliver of skin looks like.
“I came back early from a work trip, cause. Um. Cause we’ve been having problems,” he starts with a quick side glance at Obi-Wan. “Just some fighting. Going to bed angry. I guess stuff you’re never supposed to do.”
Obi-Wan tries to arrange his face in an expression meant to convey that he definitely knows what stuff one is supposed to do in a marriage.
“So I thought I could, you know. Surprise her. But when I got in, there was someone else in the house. In our bed, Obi-Wan, she fucked someone else in our bed. I--” Anakin starts crying dropping his head into his hands and dislodging Obi-Wan’s arm completely.
“Oh,” Obi-Wan murmurs, at a loss for what to say. He settles for kneeling down next to Anakin and rubbing his knee. This is platonic. This is fine. This isn’t taking advantage of Anakin in this state.
Obi-Wan has absolutely no desire to take advantage of Anakin in this state, not when he’s so hurt and sad and in need of comfort. Obi-Wan just wants to provide him with comfort, but it feels like a grievous violation to touch Anakin like this willingly. It breaks one of his most cardinal rules.
But it turns out he’d break a lot of rules for Anakin, apparently.
Especially when Anakin responds so well to his touch, practically throwing himself out of his own chair and into Obi-Wan’s arms, tea forgotten on the table.
“How am I supposed to go back there?” He sobs into Obi-Wan’s shoulder. “I thought...we were supposed to raise kids in that house and she...she’s been...she’s been cheating on me in our bed--”
Obi-Wan tentatively strokes through his hair, adding pressure when Anakin reacts positively. He hates seeing him like this, so torn up and aching. He’d loved his wife, it’s so clear to see.
But Anakin has always struck Obi-Wan as the sort of person to put loyalty over everything else. For his wife to break his trust so suddenly and quickly must spell the death of his love for her. That must be what Obi-Wan is witnessing now, with Anakin, sans wedding ring, sobbing into his arms like this. This must be how Anakin’s love dies.
“I’m so sorry, Anakin,” he murmurs into the man’s temple, pressing his nose there at his hairline and inhaling as softly as he can. He’s disgusted with himself. He can’t help himself. He--
“She said she loved him,” Anakin sniffles, seemingly unaware of anything but his own pain. Obi-Wan gathers him closer at these words and rubs at his back, offering silent comfort. To have Anakin close like this is agony, but to be an appropriate distance away from him as he fell apart would also be agony of a different sort.
And if the last four years have proven anything, Obi-Wan will choose the agony that causes Anakin any modicum of happiness he can give him.
“She said--” here Anakin pauses and takes several deep breaths against the cotton of Obi-Wan’s now damp sleepshirt. “She said she didn’t when they started, but then I--I didn’t notice and it--she said it just happened, but--”
He breaks off and freezes in Obi-Wan’s arms quite suddenly. Obi-Wan stills his own hands in response. “But?” he asks, barely more than an exhale.
“But she said she couldn’t feel sorry about it,” Anakin whispers back, pulling away so that he can look at Obi-Wan’s face.
Obi-Wan stares at him, uncomprehending. Anakin’s wife is the unapologetic sort of woman, yes, but to be caught cheating on her husband and then refuse to apologize for the betrayal? That’s something else entirely. “What?” he stutters out in a completely unflattering way.
Anakin’s eyes glisten, but he purses his lips and flexes his jaw before he speaks again. “She said she couldn’t feel sorry about falling in love with someone else because it’s quite clear I’ve done the same thing. And--and she may have physically cheated on me first, but I’ve...I’ve been emotionally unfaithful to her for years now.”
Obi-Wan blinks quite a bit and very fast, tightening his hold on Anakin before pulling away just as quickly. “That’s absurd,” he spits out, trying to calm his rushing heartbeat. “Anakin, you’re the most loyal person I know. You would never--”
“She was right,” Anakin cuts him off, breaking eye contact with him to look over his shoulder and then down at...at his lips. “I didn’t even realize she was right until she said it, but. But I’ve been in love with someone else for three years of my five year marriage. I--I’m not who we thought I was.”
And his eyes well up with tears again and Obi-Wan isn’t strong enough this time from stopping himself from reaching out and brushing one of his tears away with the pad of his thumb.
“Anakin, you’re not…” thinking straight, serious, in your right mind, in love with anyone but your wife. “You’re hurting, Anakin,” he settles on saying. “You need to...sleep. To rest.”
You need to stop saying things that will break my heart in a few days when you realize you don’t actually mean them.
But Anakin has always been stubborn, especially when it comes to Obi-Wan’s demands. “Obi-Wan,” he insists, shoving his face forward so that their heads connect with a thump. “Obi-Wan, it’s you. It’s been you. For. For longer than I knew. For three years at least. Maybe longer. It should have been you from the beginning. When--”
“Anakin, please,” he finds himself begging, scrambling up and off the floor and away from this troublesome man. “Do not say anything you cannot take back. You are in distress, you’re not thinking clearly.”
Anakin follows him to his feet. “I need to say this,” he says, voice breaking. “Please, Obi-Wan. Let me say this.”
Obi-Wan has never known how to say no to Anakin. He closes his mouth instead.
“Before we even started dating, that’s when I sat in on your lecture. When we were seniors. I just wanted to see. Wanted to know why she liked you so much, measure up my competition. But then I liked you, more than I’ve ever liked a guy before. And it only got worse after I met you again, at that party, I don’t know if you remember, but. The days after, I drove my wife insane asking questions about you and your work and your interests and your hobbies, and I didn’t even realize I was doing it.
“You were just...you were so amazing. But I loved her so much I didn’t even notice I had any love left in my heart to give to anyone else, but then there you were. There you were and every time I saw you it was like...coming up for air. Like I was living someone else’s life and then sometimes I just got to be myself and it was only ever when you were around and--I didn’t know it was love until my wife told me tonight that she fucked another man because she couldn’t stand that I fell in love with one first, and I knew immediately who she was talking about. It was you. It’s...Obi-Wan, it’s always been you.”
Anakin closes the distance between them slowly, as if he’s giving Obi-Wan a chance to run. Obi-Wan does consider it, he won’t lie, but he stands stock still as if frozen to the ground. Anakin reaches up gently and wipes at one of his tears. Obi-Wan hadn’t even realized he started crying.
“Please don’t cry,” Anakin whispers through his tears. “I understand if you--if you don’t feel the same way, but I couldn’t be quiet about it once I realized. I don’t know how to love quietly.”
Obi-Wan does. Obi-Wan’s spent four years loving Anakin quietly, and now he doesn’t have any words left in him to love him out loud.
Anakin’s hand falls away from his face at his continued silence and he looks, if possible, more heartbroken. “I...I understand,” he murmurs. “You don’t feel the way I do. I--yes. I get it. I...deserve it.”
At this, Obi-Wan has to say something because it’s been one of the tenets of his world for years now that Anakin Skywalker deserves all the love there is in the entire universe. “No,” he says roughly, dragging the words kicking and screaming from the pit of his stomach. “It’s not that. It’s--”
Anakin looks at him with wide, wet, blue eyes.
“It’s that if you...if I say it and then...tomorrow you decide you don’t mean it...darling you have to know there would be no recovering from that, for me. I’ve been so obvious.”
Anakin blinks as the words register in his brain, and Obi-Wan can tell the exact moment they do because he inches closer and clutches tightly onto his shirt. “You’ve not been obvious at all,” he murmurs, eyes still shining, even as he directs his entire attention to his lips.
“What would I need to do?” Obi-Wan breathes, aching to wrap his arms around his waist and terrified that doing so will startle Anakin away from him. “What would I need to do for you to understand how much I...how much I’ve loved you for all these years?”
“Kiss me,” Anakin whispers, leaning down as if drawn by some magnetic pull.
Obi-Wan knows he will hate himself in the morning for giving in when Anakin is so obviously grief-stricken and looking for no-strings-attached physical comfort. And yet, he meets him halfway anyway.

Flirting Disasters
Pairing: Sirius Black x Reader Summary: You fell in love with Sirius Black while working together with him at the order while he dismisses every move you make on him Warnings: Second hand-embarrassment, drinking problems, passing out, break-down. Word Count: 3,789
Tumblr media
You fiddled with your purse thinking about your first order meeting. Granted, you were an expert at decoding messages coming from your immense study of Runes; but you could very well handle yourself in a fight too.
Dumbledore already told you about your job. Decode the messages and try to find out the course of action of the death eaters. He had told you that you’ll be working with Sirius Black the owner and head of the Black household, also the order’s headquarters. You’d been told a lot about him too. Being wrongly accused and sent to Azkaban by his own best friend, his narrow escape and having to stay back at the headquarters for his own good. That did not prepare you in any way when you actually met him.
He was gorgeous. High well-defined cheekbones, long raven hair that licked his sharp jaw line. He was exactly your type, if there was one. You knew then, you were in trouble. You knew, your ever flirtatious nature would kick you in the back because you just could not not flirt with him. Not when he look like a Greek god.
“Hello, I’m (Y/n) (Y/l/n) and we would be working and living together apparently. So, hey there roomie!” you said putting your best face on.
“Sirius.” He said giving you a tight lipped smile and shaking your hand. You bit the inside of your cheek to stop yourself from saying something. He wasn’t the chirpiest of people, you decided.
***
It had been 2 days since you both worked together. You heard him speak only when required.
“So this here means north, and that little symbol over there; cabin.” You said pointing towards the latest letter. “But I don’t think that’s a place or-“
“That’s a pub” Sirius said interrupting you. “There’s a famous pub on the out skirts of London named- “Donec in septemtrionis” which translates to the northern cabin.”
“Wow, you’re smart too! Aren’t you the complete package?” You smirked, eying him.
Sirius looked at you and for a moment you were sure he was going to quip back with something teasingly witty; but he just averted his gaze, leaning over the letter.
“We need to report this to the order.”
It took a while before Sirius said more than a few words to you, and not about the job. He would light up talking about his years at Hogwarts and told you stories you were only too happy to listen. You told him about your research and the years you spent in Egypt learning languages and studying symbols and encrypted text. You told him about dealing with cursed objects and the friends you made there as Sirius held on to everything you said. You still flirted with him, making him act to be all annoyed.
---
“You look cute today.” You said as Sirius came in freshly shaven. Sirius raised an eyebrow.
“You’ll look cuter holding my hand” you winked making Sirius groan.
---
You and Sirius were looking at James and Lily’s wedding pictures.
“James was so scared that day! He looked like he would puke before we threatened him to get himself together.” Sirius said grinning.
“You know,” You said making Sirius turn towards you. “I’m gonna be your bomb ass wife someday.” Sirius scoffed and rolled his eyes.
“Oh you’re so in love with me.” You said giggling.
---
***
It was an order meeting. The two of you set up the long table, chairs and fixed some water and drinks on the cabinet. Dumbledore stood up.
“I’m sad to inform you all that Dominic Sanders is found missing.” Your eyes widened. No, not him.
“What?!?” you demanded.
“The aurors are on him, he had been to a confidential mission and we are not getting any messages from him. We already released two search parties but nothing yet has been traced.” Dumbledore emphasized. You bit back tears that were threatening to spill.
Sirius noticed the change in your demeanor. You had always been a chirpy and outspoken person,  and now to think of it he didn’t know how he would have handled himself without you. Over the top of it, you were extremely intelligent. You knew what you talked about. He would be lying to himself if he said that he never had the urge to flirt back. And you were beautiful. But he was done fooling around. He had to take care of Harry and work for the order, fight against the dark lord who dared to strike again. That didn’t mean he couldn’t be your friend atleast. So when he saw your face fall at the news, remaining quiet during the whole meeting he could only guess how sad you must be.
After the meeting, you slowly helped Sirius cleaning and clearing the area out.
“(Y/n), are you okay?” Sirius asked softly.
“Yes. Fine.” You said hoping Sirius would leave you alone like he did every time. Sirius frowned.
“You don’t think I would believe that shit, would you?” Sirius scolded.
“Sirius, please leave me alone.”
“No, you have to talk to me.”
“It’s not like you care.” You said as head thumped. The news had crushed you. You knew you were moments away from a complete breakdown. Sirius sucked in a breath.
“I do care. I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t.” he said and you finally let tears fall.
“Dominic was always like a big brother to me. He took me in when I was at my worst and is the only person I call family, I jus-“ You started breathing deeply, falling to the ground with a thud.
Sirius was near you in a second, rubbing your back. You buried your face in his neck, crying as he held you. As you slowly calmed down, you sniffed pulling away.
“Thank you.” You said.
“(Y/n), this is war. I know you are strong, but things like this happen and make you lose your faith. Please don’t. Its dark now but light always triumphs.”
“I know. I see it. I see it in you every single day.” You said looking at him. “Professor McGonagall often told me about you, you know. The young boy always upto some mischief. While others may have become spiteful over time under the things like you went through; you matured. You changed yourself when time demanded it and I admire you for it. I know there’s still good in the world.”
Sirius froze. You thought what? He looked at you wiping your tears away as he felt something leap inside him. You looked at him and let out a small laugh.
“I won’t break, I promise.” You said standing up and resuming what you were doing.
***
Something changed after that. Sirius could feel it. He would forget what he needed to do, hum Beatles songs under his breath, smile out of the blue. Everyone could see it, Molly Weasley tried her best to hold her giggles as Sirius helped you smiling and bubbling like an idiot. He greeted everyone leaving them happier. Remus raised his eyes on seeing him.
“You look awfully happy today.” He stated.
“Really? Well, it’s a nice day!” Sirius said averting his eyes towards (Y/n) who was giggling and laughing at something Tonks said; smiling instantly.
“Ahhhhh..” Remus drawled. Sirius turned his head towards his friend.
“What?” he asked.
“(Y/n)’s pretty intelligent, huh?” Remus asked.
“Yes, she is. Can you believe that girl got straight O’s in every subject she took both in OWL’s and NEWT’s? And she is quite quick minded too. She…” Sirius stopped seeing the look on Remus’s face.
“I don’t like her.” he said pointedly.
“Funny, I never said that.” Remus said smirking. Sirius shook his head.
“Like I said I don’t” Sirius said shaking his head. Remus patted his shoulder.
“Whatever lets you sleep at night.”
Sirius frowned. He did not like (Y/n).
***
You smiled seeing another letter from Pietro. He was on an undercover mission and sent letters whenever he could. He was your best friend, the person you knew would be there for you no matter what. He had sent you a bouquet of wild flowers from the area knowing how much you love them. You giggled reading how much he craved a good bowl of cake and firewhiskey.
Sirius frowned on seeing you. You had got flowers? And who wrote the letter that made you smile so much?
“What have you got?” he asked making you look at him. You smiled widely.
“Letter and flowers from Pietro! Look! Aren’t these just beautiful. I love getting wild flowers and a good book to read. Makes my day!”
Sirius tried not to frown.
“Who’s Pietro?” He asked forcing a smile.
You looked at him raising your eyes and smiling mischievously.
“Awww. Look who’s jealous? Don’t worry babe, only you own my heart.” You winked at him. Sirius’s eyes widened as a crimson blush covered his cheeks and stuttered.
“Wait… What!?! NO!” he said and you giggled.
“Keep lying to yourself.” You smirked leaving the room.
You sighed. You loved Sirius. You knew that. He made your walls crumble easily. Flirting for fun was one thing, flirting with him was another. You still couldn’t believe the day you cried in front of him. You never did that, not even with Pietro. Dominic was the only people whom you let see you like that. And you fell more in love with Sirius when he called you strong, showed you he trusted you to be capable.
But it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Because every time you would flirt with him, he would act to be annoyed. Sometimes you thought he was. You thought maybe, he really never loved you. He thought you as a friend, or as he said to his Remus sometimes, ‘colleague’. It hurt you, it did every single time. You would smile and pretend not to notice but it made your stomach churn.  However then you would remember what Dominic always said to you. Different people had different ways of showing their love. Some people would say it, while others would show you in every small way possible. And he did. He would make sure you took care of yourself, do all these things just to make you happy. Then why in hell did he deny it?
***
Sirius and you were baking a cake. Why? ‘You don’t need a reason to bake a cake.’ The cake was done beautifully as you took it out of the oven letting the chocolate smell waft through the house. You let it cool before taking the icing knife as you both started putting some cream on it. When you were done, you both admired it smirking at each other. You took the bowl with the left over icing swiping a finger through it, licking the cream. Sirius came forward to take some but you swatted his hands away. He pouted making you giggle.
“You may be the love of my life but I am not giving you the icing.” He raised his eyebrow and came forward to take some anyway and you stretched your hands away from you to increase the distance.
“(Y/n). Give me some cream come on!” he whined. You took some more eating it in front of him pointedly. He mock gasped before coming towards you making you run away from him.
“(Y/n)!!!” he said grabbing you by your waist making you topple and fall. He fell above you as you both giggled and laughed. You heard coughs on the door and you turned to see Remus and Tonks smirking. You got up red face and excusing yourself to your room.
Sirius stood up awkwardly and performed some cleaning spells to remove the mess created by the fallen icing. Tonks went after you. Sirius could feel Remus's gaze on him.
“It’s not what you think” he muttered.
“Doesn’t look like nothing to me.”
“Well it is nothing. Besides I am not as young as I used to be. Moreover I am a fugitive. I have nothing to promise her or anyone else.” Sirius said shaking his head.
“I don’t think she minds, she flirts with you quite much. And by the way she looks at you, anyone could see she really likes you” Remus insisted.
“I never flirt back.” Sirius maintained.
“Yes, I do understand that; but you do so many things for her. You make sure she sleeps on time, she eats properly, made hot chocolate for her when she felt sad. Man, you never made hot chocolate for me or James; even when we demanded it. You are leading her on. You like her and you’re hurting her by keeping up the façade. I know you Sirius don’t lie to me.”
Sirius remained silent before shaking his head. You and Tonks entered the dining area just then. You all laughed and talked about everything but the war. It felt nice. It made you happy. There was one thing though. Sirius was acting weird. He did not once look at you. He did not talk to you directly. Was he so embarrassed by his friend seeing you like that?
“So, you and (Y/n), huh?” Tonks mused teasing Sirius. You blushed.
“Tonks, let me make one thing clear,” Sirius said sitting up straighter. “There is nothing between me and (Y/n). Ever was or will be.” Sirius said the last part looking at you and you froze. Your mind reeled as maintained a poker face. Tonks head whipped towards you when Sirius said it, knowing you liked him. Besides she was a good friend throughout your years at Hogwarts. She glared at him all evening. As for you, you felt like you were sinking. Your heart thumped and your stomach churned. You hated every moment you made yourself believe Sirius did like you.
When the evening ended, you went straight to your room not looking once at the man who broke your heart so terribly. As you closed the door behind you, you fell on the ground with a thump. You put your hand over your mouth as you cried out. Your whole body shook as broke down completely. All you could hear was his words being played over and over in your mind. Your mind was numb as you slowly got up and went to the bathroom to wash your face. The silence crushed you. As you lay in your bed that night, you hugged your pillows. Sirius Black did not like you. Never had. Ever will.
Sirius regretted his words as soon as he said them. He saw your face fall for a moment before you completely masked it up. He hated himself. You did not say anything to him after that, or do so much as spare a glance over to him. He did not know what to do. Maybe you’ll hear him out the next day.
He couldn’t be more wrong. You acted like a robot around him, speaking only when necessary. No jokes, no greetings. You had raised up your guards around him. It crushed him. He felt Remus's words buzz over his head over and over again. You like her. His stomach churned and his heart thumped out of his chest. What had he done?
***
Your head zoomed as you heard Snape tell you three about harry and other children. They were underage! How were they going to handle themselves? You rushed to your room grabbing a coat.
“Where do you think you are going” Sirius growled as he saw you, ready to leave with them.
“To the ministry.” you said grabbing some floo powder.
“No you’re not, you’re staying here.” He said raising his eyebrows.
“And who are you exactly to tell me? I’m a member of the order as well. I’m going.” You said.
***
The place was a mess. Sirius could see spells fired everywhere and he made sure to know where harry was at all times. He dueled with Bellatrix, remembering old times. He stumbled back when a curse hit him in the chest.
“Stupefy!” he heard (Y/n)’s voice and saw his cousin turn to her.
“My oh my, such a beautiful girl! Crucio!” Bellatrix screamed.
Sirius felt all the air leave his lungs as (Y/n) withered in agony. He shouted to release her as someone cursed Bellatrix making her stumble. (Y/n) fell to the ground, her body limb. Sirius scrambled to her not able to control the situation.
“(Y/n)! (Y/n)!” He slapped her face, but to no avail. Remus came beside him. “Sirius, an emergency healer was sent to the headquarters, quick, take her there!” Sirius picked (Y/n) up apprating quickly. His heart thumped. Hold on, (Y/n). We’re almost there.
The healer was fast. He took (Y/n) from him taking her to the guest bedroom telling him to stay outside. Sirius slumped to the ground. Tears fell from his eyes as his mind reeled him with what happened moments ago.
***
The healer came out after what felt like hours. Sirius refused to eat anything Remus offered. Not until he saw (Y/n). Sirius was up in an instant, wanting to hear what the healer said.
“She was hit by a pretty huge curse. She’s in coma right now. We don’t know when or if she’ll wake up.”
“What do you mean ‘IF’!?!” Sirius roared.
“It’s more likely that she’ll wake up. But she’s in a coma. We can do nothing but wait.”
Sirius felt like he was going to punch the healer, but Remus held him back.
“We understand.” He said glaring at Sirius.
***
It had been 10 days. 10 days since (Y/n) lay lifeless on the bed. Sirius would read to her, sit by her, and fell asleep beside her in case she woke up at night. He watched her face as he tried to control herself. He would give everything up if was just to see her again. To hear her voice. What if she never…
“(Y/n).”
“(Y/n). Wake up. You’ve been sleeping for so long.”
“I have been an idiot, I know but please, don’t punish me like this. Just say something. Anything. Flirt with me again. I promise I’ll flirt back. Every time. Even if it’s the only thing I do.”
“(Y/n)”
***
“Sirius, she’s up” Sirius was at his feet in a moment. She was awake. Finally. Remus held him back. Sirius frowned.
“She doesn’t want to see you.”
“What?”
“She asked not to let you in the room specifically.” Remus said sympathetically as Sirius eyes prickled with tears.
“Why?” he whispered.
“Sirius, I know you are hurt, but she is just out of coma. And the last thing she remembers is your fight with her. Come on, lets get out of here, I’ll take you for a drink”
“You go.” Sirius said not meeting his eyes. What would he do now?
Sirius sneaked into (Y/n)’s room at midnight. He had to see her. It hurt, it really did, and nothing seemed to console him. He drank, transformed into padfoot, but nothing helped the ache of his heart.
He stumbled a little as he opened the door to her room.
“Sirius? Is that you?” you asked, squinting in the dim light. A shiver ran through you as you heard a vase fall down.
“(Y/n)… shit!”
You sat up and performed a spell opening lights around you. You quickly muttered a spell swooping up the glass pieces. Sirius squinted and widened his eyes as the vase fell back into its place. You let your eyes fall on Sirius. Was he drunk?
“What do you want Sirius?” you asked.
He looked you and came forward stumbling and sat on the edge of the bed.
“You. I want you. I want to talk to you. Listen to your stories and have you listen to mine. I want to hold your hand and kiss those soft pink lips of yours. I want you to flirt with me as you used to before and I want to flirt back. Shit! I am such an idiot!” he said yanking his hair. You stopped him and he looked at you.
“I am sorry. I- I have no explanation for myself. I am a stupid worthless piece of shit who didn’t deserve you and still had you like me somehow. I want to be good, but I can’t I am just too selfishhh” he slurred.
“I just want you, even if it’s the only thing I ever get. Because you are so…” he gestured his hands at you and you felt tears in your eyes.
“You. You are the magic in my life. You make me angry and sad and happy and jealous and scared. You make me smile like an idiot over nothing. You make me sing whenever I remember you. I don’t like you (Y/n). I love you.” He said as he scooted closer to you making you sniff. He laid his head on your lap and placed your hand over his head.
“Sirius“ you croaked, but saw he had already passed out.
***
Sirius woke up next morning with a grunt. He looked around in haze trying to make out where he was.
“Here, take this tonic.” You said giving Sirius the blue vial.
Sirius’s eyes widened as he tried to recall what happened the previous night. His head banged and he took the vial drinking its contents in a single gulp. It took him a moment before everything became clearer. You sat down in front of him.
“(Y/n) I-“ Sirius started but you raised your hand stopping him.
“You can get shit drunk, threaten to kill my healer, punch Remus when he kept you outside, but not once tell me that you love me?” You asked. Sirius looked down, the events of the night coming back to him instantly.
“Tell me, Sirius am I that bad a friend?” You asked after sometime.
Sirius held your hands and kissed your knuckles.
“I’ve been known to be an idiot many times. It isn’t your fault.” He said making you release a breathy laugh.
“I am sorry. Please forgive me.” He pleaded.
“Did you mean it? What you said last night?” you asked not giving yourself too much hope.
“Yes.” He gulped.
“You’ll hold my hand and always flirt back?” you asked.
“Always.”
“You’ll hold me and kiss my soft pink lips?”
Sirius nodded fervently.
“Do it then.”
His hands were on you in a second, cupping your face and kissing you urgently, as if he’ll wake up and find it was all just a dream. As you pulled back breathless, you put your head over Sirius’s.
“Sirius Orion Black, you better keep those promises.”
“I will. I can’t lose you again”

{escort fic}
This idea has been in my head for a while. People on the server seem to like it. I’ve gone back and forth on whether this is ooc or not but nobody has mentioned that it is so I’m gonna roll with it. It’s just a concept idea but if people are interested I’m happy to turn it into a full fic so please do let me know. Can also be read on ao3.

He should go out and meet somebody. Get to know them, fall in love with them, build a relationship with them. Yet, relationships took time, he had been down this road multiple times and each one had ended just as badly as badly as the other, this recent relationship taking it to the next level.
He was divorced from somebody he once worshipped and the custody of their child on the line.
He wasn’t going to make a habit out of this. His hand and porn usually did the job but it didn’t always fill the void, fill that sense of loneliness that has been there since he was twelve. Sometimes he just wanted physical human companionship, sometimes he just wanted that too much.
Yet still even after swiping a leaflet that fell out of a magazine at the Lone Gunmen’s for an escort agency it took him a week to build up the courage to call them.
He chooses something called “A Girlfriend Experience”, picks someone somewhere within his age-range and tries not to feel guilty about the whole thing.
.:.:.:.:.:.
She was running late.
Tardiness never felt like an option with her yet Emily had refused to go to bed even after Dana told her she had to go to work. It had ended with Dana a few minutes behind and Emily asleep in her bed.
But it was time to push that life aside for now, to enter this restaurant as Danielle and Danielle doesn’t have a child named Emily or a pile of textbooks to study through.
The restaurant her client had chosen was nice enough; one of those business-y type places that not many wealthy people touched but it was still classy enough to be considered decent to use.
It was rare that she would be fed- food wasn’t often part of the price, after all, it was an extra expense. Besides, most of the men she had encountered just wanted a suck and a fuck and maybe the odd therapy session. Maybe around three of her requests were for this Girlfriend Experience and it wasn’t like she was rolling in requests that much anyway.
Dana had realised quickly the types of women men went for: blonde, tall, boobs. Short redheads who just about fitted into a B-cup never made the cut that often.
Yet, for whatever reason, she had be chosen. From the emails sent this man seemed nice enough of course from the stories she would hear that wasn’t something concrete to go off. People could carefully choose the words they typed, could portray themselves in a certain way online. The same could be said for in person interactions too but people were more likely to slip up during those.
For now, Dana is tucked away, she dons Danielle and approaches able 25 where her companion for the night waits for her.
When she gets there, it’s a gentle tap on the arm, a smile, and a simple “Hi, Mulder.”
.:.:.:.:.:.:.
Mulder’s heart stops in his chest as he stares at her, struck with the thought of how breath-taking she is.
He wouldn’t say little redheads was his ‘type’ but as he was going through the countless lists of girls he hadn’t wanted somebody his type, he wanted no reminder of Diana and so he had chosen her; Danielle, 5’3, 26 years old and the complete opposite to Diana.
He hadn’t seen her face before, for whatever reason she had kept it off the page, Mulder hadn’t been expecting much in terms of looks because of it yet he can’t keep his eyes off her.
He realises she’s said his name and almost comically stumbles his way to standing up, bashing a leg against the table making the cutlery jump and a brief amount of pain to ripple length ways across his right tigh.
“Danielle,” he says wincing through the pain. Her professional name knowing full well it wasn’t her real name. He might be new to this escort world but 1-800 numbers and taught him enough about fake names, maybe he should have considered using one.
She looks to be smiling at his clumsiness, fighting it back, trying to hide it.
A shaky start Mulder thinks, as he pulls out her chair yet she’s sitting down before he gets a chance to show how much of a gentleman he is.
He’s looking through the drinks menu when he realises she’s staring at him, drinking him in. It makes him feel self-conscious.
“What’s wrong?” he asks.
Danielle seems to have realised what she was doing, she quickly looks away from him.
“You’re just…different to who I usually meet with,” she says.
Mulder smiles wryly and cocks his head.
“Is that good or bad?” he asks unsure himself.
“That’s good,” she tells him. “Usually I get the…older men and they definitely don’t go out of their way to buy me food.” She lifts her head up and smiles waiting for his reply.
He has none other than how strange he must seem to her right now, how sad. He also tries not to feel jealous at the thought of her with other men. It’s a thought that comes out of nowhere, a thought he has no right in occupying.
“So do you come here often?” she’s asking.
The answer to was that no. It was a drive away from his apartment, away from any potential sightings of colleagues or people he sees on a daily basis.
“Never,” he says realising this could be chaotic.
But she’s laughing and it’s one of the nicest sounds his eyes have ever heard.
“I hope you didn’t come here just to try and impress me.”
“Try?” he counters. “So I take it you’re not so easily impressed?”
She shrugs. “I’ve been told as much.”
Mulder leans in, surprised at how comfortable he feels around her, how at ease he is.
“Well tell me,” he says. “Are you impressed?”
She looks around the establishment, pretending to think.
“Hmm…I think you could have done better.”
“Okay,” Mulder says leaning back and giving the room a once around himself. He would say he’s done pretty well but she’s laughing again, giggling actually, and the restaurant doesn’t matter.
They order food, not that he’s particularly hungry anymore, but for some reason he doesn’t want this to end. Spending $300 a night to talk seems better than spending $300 on an apology.
“So,” Mulder begins. “What do you do aside from…this.”
He wonders about the answer he will receive. She’s lied about her name, will she lie about this or will to follow the truth as much as she can, altering things here and there. He wonders how much of her true name is in her fake name.
“Well…through the day I study mostly,” she says and this perks his interest.
“What do you study?”
“Uh…” He sees she’s searching for an answer and it breaks his heart to know that he isn’t getting the truth though he had expected her to be a bit more prepared for these questions.
“Chemistry,” she finally says. “I wanted to be a scientist.” She says it almost shyly, tucking her head in and refusing to look at him. He amends his previous thought, perhaps there is a truth after all.
“Wanted?” Mulder asks. “Is that still not possible?”
“Well…I guess so. I’m just worried about somebody hiding out about…this.” She purses her lips and shrugs.
Mulder wonder if he’ll get to ask why she does this but then wonders if that’ll be rude to ask anyway even if did get the chance.
“Well, let me pose you a question,” he says just as their food arrives. “Do you believe in the existence of extraterrestrials?”
He watches as she processes his question, her eyebrows knitting together as she attempts to formulate an answer and Mulder is curious as to what that answer is.
“Logically, I would have to say no,” she says slowly. “Given the distances needed to travel from the far reaches of space, the energy requirements would exceed the spacecraft’s capabilities.”
Mulder finds himself impressed with her, the certainty in her answer, he wonders if he’s getting a glimpse of a real person beneath the professionalism, other character.
“Okay, conventional wisdom,” he says, he expected it. “But when convention and science fail us, should we not start looking to the fantastic as answers?”
He thinks he’s caught her, she takes a while to answer, thinking it over through mouthfuls of salads. Mulder is too preoccupied with her mind to worry about the food that goes cold beneath him.
She swallows her food, sitting back in her seat and Mulder waits for the mental foreplay.
“That’s only if convention and science actually fail us.”
He thinks he’s in love.
.:.:.:.:.:.:.
There’s an easiness Dana feels around Mulder. He’s nothing like her previous clients who see nothing beyond her sexual capabilities. Mulder seems to be interested in her mind, in her and she worries she might have revealed too much of herself to him but it’s rare she finds somebody to match her intellect, her classmates can’t keep up with her, her professors shut her down in order to give other members of the class a chance. She feels intellectually frustrated at times.
“Why do you ask all this?” she inquires.
Mulder shrugs. “Oh, it’s just a hobby.”
“Talking about extraterrestrials is a hobby?”
He looks away and mumbles something she doesn’t quite catch.
“What was what?” she asks.
“I look for them.”
It’s endearing, how different he is from anyone else she’s ever met.
“Do you think you’ll ever find them?” It’s not to jest or to make fun of him.
“I’d like to,” Mulder says with an essence of hopefulness in his voice.
.:.:.:.:.:.:.
He makes the decision that he won’t fuck her.
He’ll pay $300 as a fee to access her amazing mind if he must.
They go away from the talk of aliens, something for which Mulder was glad. He has his own secrets locked away and if they continued on the subject anymore, he was worried they would tumble out of his mouth and he’d reveal how spooky he really was. They talk of other stuff, he throws conspiracy theories at her that he barely believes in himself just to hear her debunk them with finesse. She was the one who was right and he was wrong and Mulder is completely okay with that.
He stops when he reaches her hotel, this is the end of one of the best nights of his life. He’ll go home, think of her, perhaps rub one off to the thought of her, and that will be that. He’ll bin that leaflet and they’ll never talk again.
But she’s stopping when she realises he isn’t beside her anymore and turns with a puzzled look on her face.
“Tonight was great, Danielle,” he tells her. “I really enjoyed it.”
Her face almost seems to fall when she realises what he’s doing but she picks herself back up again, nodding.
“Well,” she says walking back towards him. “If we’re not doing that anymore at least let me give you this.”
Her lips touch his and fireworks go off behind him. Mulder feels as though he’s experiencing his first kiss all over again, new and exciting, and a fear that he’s doing something he’s not meant to do.
It doesn’t take long before he’s kissing her back, his tongue trying to gain access to her mouth and to her own tongue. She grants him permission, thank god, and he almost melts inside her mouth.
They fall against a wall, his head collides with the brick but he doesn’t care, there is nothing else on his mind other than the want to pick her up. He’s bent at an awkward angle because even in heels her forehead just about reaches his chin. He’s unsure what to do with his hands, on her hips, on her waist. She seems to become annoyed at his indecisiveness and takes his hands in her own, placing them against her ass all the while not breaking the kiss.
He grows impossibly hard as his senses go into overdrive. He wants her so bad when he said he wouldn’t.
“Danielle…” he moans coming up for air.
“Dana,” he hears her say and at first he’s confused wondering what she’s talking about. “Call me Dana.”
The penny drops. Her name!
“Dana.”
She’s back on him, kissing him harder this time and Mulder was kidding himself before; he’s going to make love to her.

Further Notes: And the long awaited chapter is here! Four chapters after this are left, are you ready?
You watched Sylvain from across the room. You had told Mercedes, who came to check up on you, that you weren’t feeling too well that day and was going to skip classes earlier today and she simply agreed and wished you a happy rest. None of the other Lions were particularly concerned about Sylvain’s absence, it wouldn’t have been the first time this semester when it occurred after all. But now that your hands were free from their snares, your mind wandered back to the night before only more often, and it drove you insane.
What did he mean by that?
Well, of course you knew. It wasn’t the first time you’ve heard him say it, but for some reason it felt different. You weren’t dense. You knew that boy caught feelings for you, and he caught them hard. But you truly didn’t feel the same—
Wait, actually?
You relaxed in your seat in the classroom and watched him yammer on to Felix. Would being in a relationship with Sylvain be that bad? Then you watched as another female student blew him a kiss, to which he winked back at her as if it was just a reflex and you scoffed to yourself.
“What was I even thinking?” You rolled your eyes and opened your book. But some strange thought compelled you for a moment and you shut your book and looked back to who you thought was your older brother figure and your best friend and huffed slightly. “Well…”
You knew Sylvain, you knew him well. If you looked past the obvious flirt, he’s actually a very deep person with very deep insecurities. He’s a lot smarter than people chalk him up to be, and truthfully you don’t think he’s be a bad boyfriend, but he would have to be as hooked to you as you are to him, otherwise you’re just set up for heartbreak.
Now you know Sylvain’s got it bad for you, you didn’t miss the way he blushed, you just elected to ignore it, but at the same time that’s just Sylvain. He gets hooked on one girl, then it dies out like a flame in the rain. You’re very close with him, that much is fact, and you’re really not sure if risking your near sixteen years of friendship is worth a relationship. But there lies the possibility that he is that infatuated with you, but now it’s the argument of is it love or is it infatuation, because both are two very different things, to your understanding. If you were to ask him, truth be told, he’d probably say they’re the same thing.
Now for a brief lesson on the whims of love, as presented by Professor Byleth to his colleagues. The origin of ‘Love’ and the origin of ‘Infatuation’ do stem from the same roots, they start in the heart, but it is where that feeling travels to that differentiates the two. As many might protest against, infatuation travels to the head, while love travels to the rest of the body. Infatuation is to be defined as the being obsessed with the simple idea of being in a relationship, and in this case that is a majority of Sylvain’s feelings in general. Where as love is something that encases one whole, it is the simple deciding factor that allows you to put the other before yourself when necessary, but at the same time to prioritize yourself when you must.
To bring this back to your situation, you know Sylvain enough to know that the boy is constantly hooked on the idea, but never on the truth. You trust Sylvain, you really do, after all, it is him you go to before the others most of the time, he has the best insights once he drops his dumb-jock facade and decides to become an actually decent guy.
“Um… (Name)?” Dimitri tapped your shoulder and you are pulled out of your in-depth analysis.
Dimitri.
Whenever you think you’ve gotten over him, he just has to show his dumb face in front of you in his dumb school uniform with that dumb blue cape and his dumb blue eyes and you feel yourself falling for him all over again. You feel bad for Sylvain, he had to sit through you talking about Dimitri over and over again for years, you thought about apologizing, but whenever you gave a hint to, Sylvain would reassure you that it was fine.
Dimitri is such an enigma, let that be known. You had known him for years, thanks to your mother, and you have seen his rises and falls and everything in between. But the question now arises, is what you feel for Dimitri love or infatuation?
“Oh, hey, Dima, what’s up?” You force a smile on your face and he eyes you suspiciously.
“I was wondering if you could help me out with bow training?” He asked.
Oh, you almost forgot about that. Dimitri’s strong proclamation of switching to bow skills, one you wouldn’t have seen coming from a mile away, but one that wasn’t a horrible surprise. You nodded.
“Sure, I’ll try to get you a silver bow so it doesn’t break again,” you laugh. And there’s another thing that was on your long list of ‘WHY I LOVE DIMITRI.’ It’s the honesty, the way you could read his feelings on his face. The first thing you noticed was how the tips of his ears would turn red first before the rest of his face did, then he would do that nervous side glance that would send your heart racing. Sometimes you were afraid that people would be able to tell how whipped you were for the young prince because, truth be told, the odds of you and Dimitri being end game were short, very short. He’s a prince and you’re a commoner who just happened to be lucky enough to be a part of the lives of nobles, it was just not meant to be.
You would describe your story as a complicated romantic plot. But the boy behind you would describe it as a sob story. As frivolous as he seems, Sylvain is in no way an idiot. He knows your feelings for the Prince, and he knows Dimitri’s feelings for you, there’s no way he could ever stand a chance against the crown prince of Fhirdiad, and in your heart, your relationship has plateaued at ‘Sibling-Like,’ a placement he wasn’t happy with, but one he was willing to maintain.
“Honestly, Sylvain, look at you, you’re pathetic,” Felix scoffs. “You’d might as well just tell her how you feel so you could stop looking like such an oaf when she does as much as breathe.”
“It’s just that we’ve been friends for so long, I don’t think I should say anything,” Sylvain kept his carefree smile on his face, but his words were somber. “Plus, her and Dimitri have a bond we could never have.”
“I don’t think so, but alright,” Felix shrugs. “I’ve had enough of your moping, take action or I will for you.” Sylvain blew a piece of his hair out of the way and slumped his shoulders.
“Yeah, I hear you, Felix,” he groans. The door to the classroom opens and Byleth walks in, tomes and papers stacked in his hands. He tosses them on the table and turns to the class.
“I hope you’re all ready for your first mission as students. Bandit removal, make sure your weapons are ready and repaired, we move out in a few hours,” he instructs. The class affirms his questions collectively and next thing they knew it, they were at the drop-off location, getting in formation.
This wouldn’t be your first time going against enemies, which is sad enough to say. But the life of a commoner isn’t one of luxury. When you weren’t with your mother in the castle, you were with your father at home, home being a small cottage in the middle of the woods since your father was a paranoid maniac.
It sounds cruel, but there’s no other way to put it. From a young age you had to do things for him, and that included making sure people who were hellbent on killing your father, claiming that he was “cursed” or whatever new word they cooked up for him, weren’t a problem. When did it start again? You had to have been ten at least, right?
Oh, goddess above, you just realized how bad that sounded.
Let’s set something straight, you’ve never killed anyone! Gods no. You just scared them away, is all, enough for them not to come back to hurt your father.
Now the person who taught you how to use your sword in the first place was your father, before the “Goddess please take my life away as well as my wife and child” blubber he spouted out, in fact, he was also involved in the Monastery’s defenses, until he was untimely “retired” as Seteth put it.
Another unknown fact to most, actually you didn’t recall ever telling your friends either, you had connections in the Monastery even before you were admitted to the Officers Academy, mainly for fear of being disparaged since you were technically only let in because of “connections,” and goodness how you hated using that word but it was all that was there to use. As far as your classmates know, you got in because of good grades.
Which you believe would have been right, if only you actually went to school.
# Commoner Things.
Regardless, Dimitri and Ingrid’s books always kept you as educated as you had to be.
But let’s get back to the story.
“(Name), I want you and Felix to work together for this battle,” Byleth instructs. “You two should play off of each other well, focus on bow skills.”
“Right,” you nod. You link your arms with Felix. “Guess you’re stuck with me, Lix.”
“Great, now I have to babysit while I’m in battle,” Felix rolls his eyes and you smile.
“I feel like I never partner up with you anymore! What’s the worst that could happen?” You shrug.
“With your luck? Murphy’s Law is your best friend, (Name).”
“Don’t be like that, don’t worry, I have your back!”
That exchange was ten minutes ago.
You and Felix have been pushed back and essentially cornered by the enemy bandits, and the rest of the class was on the whole other side of the battle field.
But it wasn’t your fault! Felix was the one who was cocky enough to think he could handle the west side by himself, and you had to follow him because otherwise Byleth would have failed you. So now the both of you were hiding behind a rock, out of Vulnaries, and on the brink of exhaustion. And since the Professor wanted you to focus on your bow skills he may or may not have confiscated your sword, and Felix was being a dick and not letting you use his.
“How many arrows do you have left?”
“Uh… six.”
“How many enemies are left?”
“Uh… also six.” You hold your bow close to you and Felix holds both of your shoulders.
“Look, (Name), I always make fun of you and say you will never amount to anything because you are a commoner—“
“Geez, Lix, I get it, I’m worthless, chill out.”
“But right now this is me telling you that you can and you will one shot all those enemies because otherwise we will both die out here.”
“Well maybe if you gave me your sword—“
“It’s broken, (Name), you really think I’d give this to you and toss you out there? If Sylvain doesn’t kill me, Dimitri will tear my innards out.”
“Right. Okay,” you nod in tiny. “I dunno, Lix, my hit rate is one to six.”
“You can do it, I know that better than the others,” he shakes you slightly.
“Okay, okay, but if I die I am so convincing the Goddess to let me come back down so I can strangle you.”
“Deal. Now go kill those bandits.”
“Right, okay, right,” you nodded your head again.
Quick reminder, you’ve never killed anyone.
Also quick reminder, you don’t specialize in bow.
Also another reminder, last time you killed a fly you cried.
Okay, good luck, (Name).
You stood up and drew your bow back, focusing on the closest bandit, taking a deep breath in, you adjusted your stance, remembering Claude’s words, and as you exhale, you release the arrow, following it’s trail and hitting the enemy, leaving him out of commission.
“Oh gods, I did it. I actually did that… I am so sorry, I am so so sorry,” your expressions shifted dramatically. Felix poked his head out from behind the rock.
“See what did I tell you, (Name)? Go fuck some shit up!”
“Watch your language, Frauldarius,” you draw your next arrow, a new found confidence setting in you, and aim for your next target. Maybe you’re imagining it, but there was something different about how you were using your bow today, something more intense, to put it simply. Did arrows really fly that fast? And was a wooden bow really that strong enough to eliminate the enemies in one hit?
All questions for later.
Finally there was one last bandit and, using the same technique as the previous bandits, you took your shot.
And missed.
“You missed?!” Felix ran both hands through his hair.
“I told you I was a beginner!”
“So you miss your target the one time you shouldn’t miss?!”
“Oh shut up, Felix, you’re lucky I got the first five!”
“You two are really arguing, at a time like this?” The bandit halted in his tracks.
“Yeah we are, fuck off,” Felix grumbles. You glare at the bandit, grab Felix’s broken-ass sword, and drive it into the bandit’s chest.
“Don’t fucking interrupt me!” You growled. “Anyways, I don’t understand why you’re so unreasonable, Felix, you don’t see me complaining about your attitude 24/7.”
“That’s because you’re weak.”
“Say that again to my face!”
“I did!”
And the argument continued for the Goddess only knows how long and it finally ended when the Professor found the two of you and explained that the battle had been long over, then after a thorough scolding for worrying the entirety of the class, the two of you just decided not to talk to one another. Although you did find some joy in seeing Ingrid nag Felix about his broken sword, going off about how he should have checked before their very important first mission. But then your joy ended when she turned her anger towards you and lectured you on how you should have some respect for the people who were older than you, and also how you shouldn’t argue in battle since it’s “distracting” to the other classmates, but how could it be “distracting” if it was only you and Felix?
Either way, you had a bitter attitude for the rest of the week, and none of the Blue Lions were brave enough to go up to you and even make small talk.
And it wasn’t until Friday night when Felix decided to man up and go up to you.

Etymology of Us // TM!JFM
Pairing: Tim Murphy x Fem!Reader Word Count: 4K Style: One-Shot Warnings: (16+) Fluff, explicit-ish talk about sexual themes – no smut (implied), swearing Summary: Everyone who knows Tim knows he’s a smart guy, but they think it’s all about the dinosaurs. For the most part, that’s true. He does have a few other passions, though, and he always unconsciously demonstrates that for you, even in the most personal of situations. Permanent Author’s Note: To clarify, I write because I get bored. Nothing is meant to be professional in any way, nor is meant to offend, cause anxiety, cause anger, cause sadness, or promote disagreement among readers in any sort of (semi)permanent way. A/N: I have a lot of confidence in the fact that Tim would be educated on more than dinosaurs, and this just happened to be something I felt really strong Tim vibe from. So, yeah. I’m not proud of the introductory part of this story, but whatever lol.
Masterlist
~
You know Tim is smart. So does everyone who knows him. Except you know him a lot more intimately than most. Considering you have been together for almost six months, after having met him at the museum during a tour, there is not a lot you have not done together. You have gone on every kind of date imaginable, and gone almost all the way romantically when you would stay the night at each other’s apartments. It was the best relationship either of you had been in for a number of reasons, and it felt like you were soulmates. Tim never ceased to amaze you every single day, part of the reason your relationship was so strong. You felt like you learned more about love, life, random knowledge, and dinosaurs than you ever did in all your years of formal education. He was a bookworm and always had new information to willingly share with you, something he would never do with past girlfriends. They did not care like you do, something else that made your relationship so strong. There was mutual pining and mutual adoration and acceptance of the other’s personality – key for a healthy relationship. Tim started teaching you things even back on your first date, and even then, you knew that this boy would make a large impact on you.
~
Tumblr media
The first date you went on was extremely traditional, which was classic Tim, as you would come to find out. It was not a super fancy restaurant, but one of those places where you did not feel you could just wear a raggedy tee shirt and jeans or leggings. You elected for something a little nicer, and once the two of you were at the restaurant, you fell into conversation easily. Like two friends who have not seen each other in years and have tons of catching up to do. No awkwardness, no nerves – just two people having a pleasant dinner who also happen to be on a date. The conversation spread across all topics from family to friends to hobbies, and eventually it settled on work. Ever since the two of you met, you had so many one-on-one questions you wanted to ask Tim about his work. You prefaced with one specific memory that flooded your mind.
[flashback start]
You met because you had attended a tour he was hosting on the Mesozoic era, generally aimed at children aged six to fifteen. He had been given a roster of how many people to expect, which was quite a few, and he noticed that you had walked in not bringing a child like most of the adults on the tour. At first, he thought maybe you were looking for a sister that brought your niece or nephew and you just happened to be tagging along, but then you made no effort to find anyone. When he realized you had come alone, he worked up the courage to come over to you and ask if you were in the right spot.
“Ma’am?”
“Oh! You’re Dr. Murphy, aren’t you?”
“Yes, um, are you in the right place? This is a tour for a younger audience.”
“Well, unless I read my ticket wrong,” you held your ticket out in front of his eyes so he could read it, “I believe this says ‘Dr. Timothy Murphy’s Presentation on the Mesozoic Era, Thursday, August 14 at 1:00pm.’ Did I read it wrong?”
Tim simply looked at the ticket, and then back to you in a stunned silence. You had really bought a ticket to see his presentation, despite knowing that almost all the tours he does in the museum are for younger kids.
“No, uh, you… you didn’t read it wrong.”
“You seem a little shocked that I have a ticket, Doctor.”
“Well, it’s just that I don’t really get people my age on these tours, and everyone who comes to the lectures are old coots.”
You laughed at his vernacular, loving how professor-like and old man-like such a young, cute guy could be. When he heard you laugh, his eyes went wide and he felt his heart skip a beat, because a young, cute girl loved his jokes, which never happened.
“Sorry for how bold I just was – that’s not how I usually am. Basically, I have tried attending your lectures in the past, but whenever I get the money to buy a ticket, they’re usually gone or the only seats left are one’s I can’t afford. I’ve read all of your books, some of them more than once, and you just never cease to amaze me. You’re really smart and I admire that.”
Tim felt dizzy. He was hearing the words coming out of your mouth, barely being able to process how kind they were. Never had anyone spoken to him in such a way, not even his colleagues or past girlfriends, of which there were not many because he was always so busy or they hated how involved in his work he could get. But to hear you say them just changed his whole perspective on life. He did not even know your name but he was enamored with you. One could call him desperate, and he would just scoff and look down at his feet. Not denying it, however.
“Well, um… listen. Normally with the kids, I have to dumb down my word choices because the younger ones won’t know everything, so I apologize in advance for how childlike I may present myself.” You smiled sweetly at him, acknowledging him and showing him that you did not mind. “I also would love to have you attend my lectures every time we have them, so let me see what I can do about arranging a sort of ‘seasonal pass’ for you, that way you never have to worry about a seat.”
“Dr. Murphy, you do not—”
“I’m serious. Like I said, it’s always older men who are always judgmental about the way I hold myself up on stage. I’m… not a bold person. I’m shy, and they don’t like that. It would be really nice to have a face like yours in the crowd each night. One that I know is appreciating everything I say, wholeheartedly.”
“‘A face like mine?”’
“…” You could see Tim visibly swallow and his Adam’s apple bob out of sheer panic. “A cute one?”
You felt your lips part slightly at the compliment, somewhat shocked that someone as clearly shy as him paid you one. You knew that coming from someone like him, it had to be genuine. Dr. Tim Murphy thought you were cute, and wanted to see you again. Even if it was only for a lecture.
“Then… this cute face would love to attend all your lectures, Dr. Murphy.”
You saw the toothy grin spread across his face, pushing his cheeks up to high heaven. It made you airily laugh a little, seeing him like that.
“If you keep smiling like that, I’m going to have to start calling you cute, too, Dr. Murphy.”
“I wouldn’t mind that. But there is one thing you have to do for me.”
“What’s that?”
“Call me Tim. Not Dr. Anything. Just Tim.” You nodded your head at him, and he asked you one last thing. “And what should I call you?”
“Y/N.”
[flashback end]
“You remember how we met?”
“Of course, I do – you came to that tour for children and I wanted to make sure you were in the right place.”
“Always the gentleman, Tim.” You and Tim had been finishing up dinner on your first official date, reminiscing about that day. It seemed like you already crammed a lifetime’s worth of memories into that first meeting you had, because you had managed to talk about it for the last fifteen minutes. “I remember being amazed at how you talked to those kids. I mean, you clearly know tons of bigger words that younger children wouldn’t know, yet you know how to explain it to them really well. It made me very impressed with you, seeing that you really were as smart as your books made you out to be.”
“Yeah, I had to explain everything like that because they weren’t going to understand what Mesozoic meant or anything like that. They’re children, and they just like the idea of dinosaurs, not the actual history of them. Back when I was in college, there were certain root words or stems that we needed to know in order to understand the classification of dinosaurs. For some reason, learning about the way the classification worked sparked something in my brain. I love learning about whatever I can, and I guess that was my body’s way of telling me etymology was something for me. I started researching where words came from, going through the dictionary word by word. Seems boring, I know, but… it made me happy.”
You could see Tim start to feel as if he was talking too much, like all his past dates went, except that when he looked up at you, he could tell that was not the case. You had leaned your body in and over the table, propping your head up on your fist, intently staring at him. Taking in every word that slipped past his lips as if your life depended on it. This encouraged him, while also making him really giddy inside. He reached over to the small candle that was burning faintly between you two, and lifted it up, carefully so as not to burn himself. He watched you as your eyes moved to the candle, and back to his own, waiting to hear what he was going to say.
“Like… candle, for instance. Originally, it was candere in Latin, which means ‘be white or glisten.’ Eventually, that became candela, still Latin, and then old English turned it into candel. Then, when modern English came around, we switched the ‘l’ and the ‘e,’ probably because it just looks less ugly.” He let out a chuckle at his own humor. “But, that’s kind of what I did with the dictionary. Learning about where words come from, and what they originally meant intrigues me.”
His eyes had not really left the candle once he started to speak. Once he finished talking, however, his eyes nervously looked back into yours. Your facial expression had changed, ever so slightly. Your eyes had gone a little wider than usual, and they were sparkling, more than usual. Then he noticed that your cheeks were a dusty pink and that you had pulled a small part of your bottom lip into your mouth with your teeth. Tim was not the most experienced, considering how girls would treat him in the past, but he could practically feel the tension radiating from you. Something about him knowing those things made you feel… good?
“You’re amazing, Tim. Really.”
“Thanks. I know plenty more where that came from.”
“I’d love to hear more.”
~
Every day since your first date, Tim would always make it a point to showcase his smarts to you in the way that seemed to make you feel a certain way, because he liked seeing that he could have an effect on a woman that way. Especially considering that woman was you. One night, you and Tim were hanging out at his apartment after a date night. The two of you had created a small tradition where if your date ends quicker than expected and you end up back at one of the apartments, you will watch Jeopardy. Tim quickly found out, since you suggested watching the show in the first place, that you loved to learn too, and even though he could typically get about half of the show’s questions right, he loved seeing how proud you got with yourself when you would get three total. Tonight was no exception. You made it back just in time for the show to start, and the two of you were patiently waiting to see what the categories would be for the first round. The first five were announced, each earning a groan from one or both of you at the fact that they were not really subjects you know. Then the sixth one came up.
“And finally, you will be dealing with etymology. [First contestant’s name], you begin the round. Let’s begin.”
You turn to Tim and see a huge smile across his face, and you could not help but reciprocate. You two had seen so many episodes and not once had the category that practically formed your relationship come up. Now, on a night where you two are snuggled into each other, your head on his chest, enjoying the warmth radiating from the other person, that was just the icing on the cake. The contestants seemed to be avoiding the etymology category, moving all around the board in no semblance of order except for skipping that one, and you could hear Tim groan above you.
“Why are they skipping it? It’s the best one up there!”
“I know, babe, but the anticipation makes it worth the wait, right?”
“I guess.”
You could just imagine the small pout Tim had plastered onto his face, knowing that he would have to sit and wait for a commercial break now, as well. It made you smile to yourself, because you had seen that face before when he would work on something and he got intensely focused. It was an adorable face that he only made around you – he never let anyone else see him like that. It made you feel really loved. Eventually, the show came back on and the contestants really did do everything else and left the entire etymology category last. When the final question popped up before the etymology category would start, you turned up to Tim and smiled, as if to say ‘ready to show off your smarts, brainiac?’and he knew exactly what you meant. His eyes were beaming widely, ready to shout out the answers before anyone on the screen could.
“…cable.”
“Neighborhood!”
“Manure. Ew.”
“Aerosol.”
“…Hourglass?”
So far, Tim had gotten every single one correct, and the contestants only managed to get the neighborhood one correct. Then it was time for the final question, and you were waiting to see if Tim was going to make it a clean sweep. Then the question popped up and you waited patiently.
“From Ancient Greek, a diminutive of uncertain origin and probably in reference to its location on the female body, it means ‘I sheathe or shut.’”
“Clitoris!”
Tim was one hundred percent correct, and for some reason, despite the energetic and completely innocent nature in which he said it, it lit a fire in you that only Tim could put out. But you did not want to make it obvious, because he was clearly so happy with himself that he got the entire category right. So, you simply decide to ‘award him’ with a small kiss, but you moved your body upward a little bit so your head could reach the crevasse of his neck and shoulders. The kiss was small, swift, and chaste, but the location is what mattered. Tim had been smiling and celebrating himself, but the feeling of your lips on the small but small amount of exposed skin from his tee shirt stopped him in his tracks, and it made him blink rapidly and swallow a little roughly. You felt as though this was his way of encouraging you to keep going, since he never told you to stop. You lifted your head a little bit, so your mouth was lined up right with the side of his neck, where you placed a breathy, open-mouthed kiss. Still teasingly short, too short for Tim’s liking. You could hear your boy moan quietly, clearly having some kind of effect on him. You wanted him to feel the way you did as he innocently shouted out a part of your body you wished was getting attention from him now.
“Do you know where the word ‘kiss’ comes from?
You hum lightly against his neck where you were still peppering wet kisses to. You squeaked out a ‘no,’ waiting for him to continue with his thought, if he could.
“It has Germanic o-origin, and comes from the old English cyssan… shit. I… I think you know what it means.”
“Mhm.” He could feel the vibrations of your response against his neck, and he groaned louder this time, not wanting to hold back anymore. He could feel you start to pull away and stand up, practically whining at the lack of contact. He did not want you to leave, and you could tell. But you had absolutely no idea what gave him the idea that you were going to be leaving his side anytime soon.
As you stood, you lightly took his hand in your own, and pulled on it to signal him to stand with you. You made sure your back was facing him, though, because you did not want him to see how desperate for him you had become. Now that both of you were standing, you begin to walk as slow as a tortoise toward his bedroom, hoping that he would get the picture and start pampering you and worshiping you on the way there. You felt like you were in a movie, considering how cliché this whole thing is. But neither of you cared, you just needed to get the cliché’s out of the way. Eventually, it clicks in his brain that he should be following you, and he makes up the distance by walking directly behind you, lightly running his fingers up and down your spine. One particular stroke down your spine went further than the others, and you could feel Tim lightly tug on the hem of your shirt. Indicating that he wants it gone. He spoke in a whisper so quiet you could barely hear him.
“How about the word shirt? It’s from the Old English scyrte, which is Germanic. It kind of means short.”
With every new word Tim chose to tell you, he gained confidence in what he was doing, indicated by the non-shakiness of his voice. You were proud underneath it all. While Tim is speaking, you could slowly feel the fabric inch up your torso with every word. You could begin to feel the cold air of his apartment on your skin, and your body tells you that you need some kind of warmth. You fight off every reflex in your body telling you to latch onto Tim or at least steal your shirt back, not wanting to ruin the moment both of you had been waiting for six months to happen. You never saw it, but you could hear the light noise his shirt made when it hit the floor, Tim always wanting to make sure the two of you were even in all aspects. Even something as intimate as this. You both continue your ascension to his bedroom, and eventually you reach it. What should have taken about ten seconds for any normal person took the two of you practically three minutes, Tim adoring the look and feel of your back and spine, you relishing in the feeling of being appreciated in such an intimate way, something no one has ever done for you before Tim. You reach for the doorknob and simultaneously turn around to see what kind of effect you were having on your boyfriend, and it was clearly the one you wanted. He already looked fucked out, and neither of you had really touched each other. Not the way you both needed to be. Once completely facing him, you turn your hand on the doorknob to let yourselves in, and his hand comes up to your face to lightly stroke and pull on your hair. The strokes to show you he loves you, the tugging to let you know he wants and needs you.
“Hair’s a funny word originally. Hær. Old English, again.”
As he was speaking, you had lost all ability to move your legs anymore, feeling like they would collapse under you simply from the fact that Tim was being the way he was. Most people would have found him annoying for bringing up things like he was during a time like this. For you, though, it made him hotter because he was not afraid to be himself, even in the most intimate of situations. He was smart, and he liked showing you. You also loved the fact that letting him continue to talk was making him more and more confident in the things he was doing to your body, which was a win-win for both of you. Eventually, you were snapped out of your thoughts by the feeling of Tim’s body pushing against yours to get you into his bedroom, fast, based on the force of the push. He does not even need to look behind him as he locks the door, and wraps his arms around your waist and pulls you into his body. It was killing both of you that there still had not been any mouth to mouth contact in this whole situation, but you were both holding out in order to let Tim continue to speak, and to build up the anticipation for later. He did, however, pull you close enough to his body where you could feel each other’s breathing on your lips, desperate and needy, if breaths could feel such a way. You had not even realized Tim had gotten you to move again, so entranced by his breathing and his facial features, until you hit the side of his bed and your knees buckled underneath you. Your bum hit the bed and you bounced lightly, which normally would have made you laugh. This time, feelings were different. More serious. More lust-driven. Once you realized Tim was done taking initiative and wanted to trade off with you, you reached forward to hook your hands into the pockets of his jeans, and you not-so-gently yanked his body to yours. Your face was flush against his chest, chin practically resting on it, and you could feel the front of his jeans where you wanted him against your stomach. You were gazing up at him, face flush pink and eyes blown out black and half-shut. Waiting to hear him speak again. You saw him reach his arms toward your body, lightly resting his hands on your waist and then proceeding to find the waistline of your pants. Just as you began to reach for the buckle on his belt, you heard his angelic voice again.
“How about hips, wanna know where that word came from?”
You never said a word, and neither did he. All that was exchanged was a small pause and silent stares. You were both waiting for the other to make the next move, because both of you knew deep in your cores that if the other took another step forward, the night would end up being far from over. Tim could not take waiting anymore, so he crashed his mouth down onto yours like his life depended on it, and that he would never get to kiss you again at the same time. It was deep, passionate, full of love, and driven by lust. It was never a small kiss to begin with, so much so that it was practically impossible for either of you to deepen the kiss in any way. Tim thought of one more word that he wanted to teach you, so he slowly pulled away from your mouth, the tiniest string of saliva still connecting the two of you. Normally, that would be something you found disgusting, but in that moment, the part of you from the final Jeopardy question started throbbing at the site, indicating your desperation and just how passionate the kiss really was.
“What about the word sex?”
Tim had still been pressed flush against you, and at this point, you could clearly feel what effect you were having on him through his jeans. He caught you off guard with the question he asked, and your motions stopped just as you reached the button of his jeans.
“Instead of telling me, why don’t you just show me… Doctor?
Tim taught you a lot that night. And you taught him a thing or two, as well.

Phyrra had yet to find anything in the B.P.R.D library.
Well, not quite. There were masses of volumes filled with information on creatures big and small. Lost civilizations. Gods and Goddesses. Multiple encyclopediae on many a species. None of the content resembled her in the slightest.
After her disastrous rendezvous with Hellboy, Phyrra had intended to keep her distance. The next daybreak, as the Professor, Alice, Binx and herself got an early start scanning through the books, Hellboy had crept in, looking much worse than last night.
“Morning Sunshine!” Alice observed HB with sheer delight. “Are you hungover? Get a little pissed last night?”
Phyrra was left unclear. Pissed? As far as she knew, the term used by humans was used when someone was extremely angry, but what could have caused Hellboy to be pissed? She feared it might have had something to do with her. She glanced at Binx on the table in front of her, watching the pixie shrugged her shoulders, she had no better interpretations.
She felt a burgeoning companionship with Alice and Trevor; both were intelligent, considerate, playfully cunning humans. The morning banter they had back and forth filled Phyrra with a sense of calm amusement she could grow increasingly used to. Binx was happier as well, she didn’t speak it out loud, but Phyrra knew her friend well. The tinkling laughter she often heard coming from the pixie confirmed it for her.
With Hellboy, however, she felt on shaky ground, uncertain how to act.
“Good morning,” She found herself saying to him over the table, just because he seemed displeased with current situations, she couldn’t find it in herself to be unfriendly.
Hellboy cleared his scratchy throat. He had hit it harder after the elf girl had run away, drinking and smoking cigars until he eventually passed out five hours ago. “Morning,”
Hellboy picked up one of the books, he hated homework. At the prospect of finding out more about Phyrra though, he could find it in him.
Trevor called Phyrra over as he discovered a tome on beings with healing talents with mentions of tattoos, but upon further inspection it pertained to a sort of ritual with blood in the ink, turning the markings red.
“How about some breakfast?” Alice chimed in about twenty minutes later, and the five of them agreed, walking down the hallway to the small, modern kitchenette used by the main four of them when doing research.
Trevor went for the bread drawer, while Alice and Hellboy sat on the stools by the island counter, looking quite out of place. Phyrra on instinct went to the fridge but stopped flat realizing what she was doing.
“May I?” Trevor simply nodded and stood back, watching this elf girl with delight.
It was a simple action Phyrra fell into, opening cupboards and turning on the stoves. The fridge was well-stocked with all matter of provisions. Her eyes caught large, lovely white eggs. Crisp, green peppers. Mushrooms. Phyrra decided on omelets.
It was difficult for her to find joyful ways to spend her time at the compound. Being in the kitchen helped her feel a sense of control. Preparing meals, using knowledge and creativity to make delicious meals, even if it was for a person she would rather not be waiting on.
Phyrra was cracking eggs when Alice saddled up beside her, trying to help with her bowl of cracked eggs, picking out shells as she went.
“You look like an old pro at this. I’m an absolute shite in the kitchen.”
“I was mostly the one that prepared meals for …” Phyrra halted, one day she would be able to voice his name without halting first. For now, the wounds were still fresh. “Anyways, perhaps I could give you some help with your cooking if you’d like.”
Alice agreed wholeheartedly, loving this easy friendship Phyrra provided. The elf girl handed Alice a large knife, asking her if she wanted to chop the vegetables. It was a sad sight, the medium stabbing ineffectively.
“Hold your finger’s like this, it will prevent you from cutting yourself, and slice like this. Yes, good job.” Alice didn’t feel demeaned at Phyrra’s calm instructions. The elf girl was classy, a kind of reserved shyness that Alice didn’t usually find appealing. Nevertheless, there was sweetness in Phyrra, Alice could overlook a little naivety.
Together, the ingredients were mixed. Alice was made aware of Hellboy’s eyes following Phyrra’s sure movements as she transferred the mixture into the sizzling pan.
So relaxed as she was in her routine, Phyrra gave a start at Trevor’s voice.
“Ah Phyrra, say good morning to Major Ben Daimo.” Phyrra turned to a tall, somber man entering. All Phyrra got was a slight nod before the cranky man reached the coffee pot, grunting his morning to his boss.
“Don’t worry about Ben. Takes the term ‘strong, silent type’ to new levels, he’ll come around to you.” She smiled at Alice’s attempt to make her feel better.
Phyrra added another plate, quickly whisking together another omelet. She asked Binx over to blow a heating enchantment to speed up the process.
Phyrra deposited the five creations onto their plates, she would share with Binx as always, the pixie couldn’t handle much to herself. As the group gathered around the counter,
“Have you given any thought to my offer Phyrra?”
She stopped reaching for her plate. Yes, she had, she hadn’t stopped thinking about it since he spoke the words into existence. Could she stay here, among these humans? Use her abilities for some good after so long being used. She looked to Binx, the pixie shook her head ruefully.
“You already know your answer. I’m not gonna change your mind.”
Phyrra gave her attention back to her new colleagues.
“You’ve all shown me the truest kindness I’ve experienced in who knows how long. My answer is yes, of course.”
Phyrra couldn’t help the tickled laughter at Alice’s yelled exclamation.
“Awesome! I can help train you, teach ya some moves. This is gonna be so cool! I’m not the only girl on the team anymore!”
“Hope you fit in well,” Phyrra was perplexed by Major Daimo’s mysterious answer, but didn’t give it much more thought. As Alice had said, she would simply have to be extra kind to the stoic man until he got used to her.
Phyrra’s mind halted. She was so foolish. That’s what she would have to do with Hellboy!
As this interaction was happening, Hellboy was silent. He was trying to digest the information. Phyrra on the team. Phyrra traveling with them, putting herself in dangerous situations they often found themselves in. Of course, on the one hand, he was filled with excitement at the idea of Phyrra being around daily.
The other hand couldn’t stop thinking about how delicate she seemed. Sure, she had the strength he knew. She was incredibly bright. Resourceful.
It didn’t stop him from worrying.
Praises all around were given to Phyrra on her food. She felt herself flushing under the attention. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy it. She had always had praise, but it was a double-edged sword. These people meant their compliments, didn’t expect anything in return.
Everyone was tucking in with enthusiasm to their breakfasts when Trevor cleared his throat.
“Now that you are all here. I must inform you you’ll be leaving today for the Galápagos Islands. There have been some sightings of lizard men off the coast of San Christobal, causing quite a nuisance to the tourists.”
“Phyrra, you’ll stay behind this time. While their gone, I will begin to teach you some finer points of this operation. Ms. Monaghan, when she returns, can give you some sparring help. I don’t wish to overwhelm you as we’re still researching your ancestry. Perhaps a couple of weeks, you would be set for fieldwork. We’ll play it by ear.”
Phyrra nodded her understanding. Of course, first and foremost in the mind was recovering her memories. As much as she had to square the debt with her saviors, she had self-preservation to think of. She contemplated this as without thinking about it she went to collect the plates.
“You put those down right now Ms. Phyrra. You cooked us this wonderful breakfast, we can clean up.” Trevor gentle command to Phyrra was heard and with Alice and Ben, they collected the plates, changing subjects as they bussed them to the sink. Hellboy wasn’t one for washing dishes, he always ended up breaking them.
The two left behind locked eyes.
“Would you like some more?” Phyrra came over to him with the coffee pot. A peace-offering.
“Yeah, please.” It had been a damn fine breakfast. The knowledge that Phyrra had talents in culinary as well as magic with her beauty stalled him. He would just have to take this elf girl in as he got to know her, now that she would be around more.
“Welcome to the team, I guess.” Phyrra’s lips stretched in a dazzling smile. Hellboy audibly swallowed but managed to return the favor with a slight smirk.
“Thank you, Hellboy.”
“..Never got my chance.”
“Excuse me?”
“Last night. I didn’t get a chance to return the thank you. I mean for… Fixing me up.”
Phyrra re-evaluated his entire behavior. She did flee immediately at his quietness. She had taken his odd behaviour for disinterest or unpleasantness. Hellboy seemed very shy. She didn’t want him to be nervous around her, she owed him everything. Phyrra had never experienced this feeling, she felt drawn to his creature. She wanted his good opinion more than anyone she had ever met before.
Not for the first time, she cursed her amnesia for the stolen moments between them.
She would have to be patient and get the answers out of him one day.
“You’re most welcome. I would have spent my whole life trapped if it wasn’t for you all.” Phyrra’s eyes flicked to Trevor and Alice discussing some kind of event coming up. Also to Ben, brooding over his cup of coffee. She returned to his eyes. They were quite lovely; blazing like sunsets.
“Let me do something for you. I should give you a favor.”
The elf girl chose that moment to lay her palm against the back of Hellboy’s stone hand resting on the counter. Phyrra found herself savoring the sensation. She expecting it to feel cool to the touch, but as his name suggests, a great warmth emanated from him at all times. The stone was no different.
Hellboy had hoped that if he ever came in physical contact with Phyrra again, it would have become familiar, not as much of a shock.
He’d never been more wrong. She wasn’t using her magic, but it felt as if her caress was lightening his hangover. He didn’t have much feeling in his right hand, that’s why it smashed things so well. He felt Phyrra’s touch. Once again, she had the coolest, tender way of placing her fingers against him. He looked down at the slight shift of her fingers running across the rock and shivered.
Trevor spoke up.
Both parties felt blank when the moment broke. Feelings too new to be recognized left an awkward pause...
“Well, I’d say you three better be heading off. The helicopter will be ready in ten.”
Alice could have killed the Professor. They were so cute. Alice couldn’t handle the way they looked at each other. She could think of a few favors Phyrra could give Hellboy… Okay maybe she wasn’t really paying attention to the Professor about the Alumni Banquet, but all the parties were the same after a while: catch a flute of champagne off a passing waiter, smiling pleasantly at a few decrepit billionaires, stay close to the Professor and thank him at the end of the night for being a fabulous date. Super boring. But a plan was brewing in Alice’s mind, Phyrra and Hellboy’s infatuation with each other at the forefront.
They were gonna name their first child after her.
“Be safe.” Were the words she spoke as she withdrew her hand. It was a simple request, but the idea of it unhinged him. Her wish for his safety. It gave him hope, that he didn’t completely fuck up this burgeoning friendship with the elf girl. As alluring as he found Phyrra, first he had to get her to like him.
“I will...See ya later,” Hellboy resisted the urge to run away. No longer would he run from Phyrra. That was the start, he found the strength to continue looking at her as they left, relishing in her luminous eyes, her graceful features. The first thing Hellboy had to do was get over just being around her. The only way to do that, he concluded, was to stop avoiding her like the plague. Treating her like the same, scared wild animal he met at Elias’s compound.
Phyrra was bereft as the trio disappeared out of the room. It was an odd response, it wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy just Trevor’s company, the calm sureness. She would miss them though: funny Alice, shy Hellboy and aloof Ben, quite a little band they made. Would she be able to fit among them?
“Phyrra, might I suggest we go into town today to get you some essentials? Clothes and such,”
She was confused by Trevor’s request.
“You are a company member now, and our salaries are generous.” She realized what he meant, chuckling as she accepted the outstretched arm with her hold, delighting at the older man’s generosity.
“I would like that very much, Trevor.”
_
San Christobal...two days later...
Ben had retired early, leaving HB and Alice sitting at the firepit. The tourists had been more than thankful for their quick dealings with the hombres lagarto, they had shown it by giving them baskets filled with booze and sweet fruits. A bottle of rum was passed between the comrades for awhile. Before Alice couldn’t help but bring up the dreaded subject.
“So...Phyrra.” Hellboy stiffened at the mention of her name.
“Want some tips?”
“Not in a million years,” Hellboy hated he was this obvious. He was so not used to this, this attraction he had for Phyrra. Sure, he was half-man. He found women attractive. in his youth he had posters of Brigitte Bardot and Jayne Mansfield pinned on his bedroom walls. They turned into Farrah Fawcett and Sharon Stone as the decades flew by.
Nimue had been the first woman to show interest in him, look how that turned out. She had used her wiles to try to force him into his destiny of the bringer of the apocalypse. Despite what his father had thought, he was stronger than any perfumed words or perky breasts, it had just felt... Nice. To have been desired for once, not treated like a freak.
No erection was worth the end of days.
That awful dream or vision he had when Alice picked him up after his giant encounter. Him in the shower. Nimue coming to him. Bathing in blood. It was some sick shit. At the moment, yes he had been carried away. He had wet dreams before, being a 60-year-old virgin would do that to you. He had assumed it was just one of those. Nimue was pure evil but she hadn’t been hard on the eyes.
Now with Phyrra, he felt so very different. She was pureness personified, a beacon of warmth, goodness. He had come to terms with knowing he wasn’t an evil creature, nurture over nature had made that clear. It didn’t mean he deserved something so innocent as Phyrra.
“Actually, not like that.” Hellboy pulled from the bottle, “But you’re a girl-”
“Thanks for noticing!” Alice jerked the bottle out of his hands, taking a drink herself.
“You know what I mean. How should I…. Aw geez, I don’t know…”
“Woo her? Sweep her off her feet? Get those eyelashes fluttering?” Alice, in her slight inebriated state,
Hellboy gave Alice a grave look.
“Okay, you know what, if you’re just gonna make fun of me, forget I said anything.” He started to lift himself off the rock.
“Don’t move HB, you know I’m kidding.” Alice regarded Hellboy “I’m just… Happy that you’ve found someone I guess... You deserve it.”
“Shucks, kid.” Hellboy grew silent, insecurities rising in him. “What if she-”
“Stop right there mister! Don’t forget already I’m a woman. I can take notice when I see two people attracted to each other. She doesn’t look at any of the other men at HQ the same way she looks at you, get my drift?”
“Alright, so what should I do?”
“She seems to be very old-fashioned. A proper lady, so you’re gonna have to be the proper gent. I’m sure she hasn’t ever had someone want to listen and do what she wants.” Alice smirked at her friend, "So sorry to say, you’re going to have to man up and ask her.”
Alice didn’t reveal her project, he was already very wary of asking this elf girl out, she couldn’t spook him too much. She held the bottle out.
Hellboy drank some more.
He could do it. He’s faced demi-gods and titans. He’s looked in the face of evil personified and cut it down with a swipe of a blade. He could ask Phyrra out on a date.
He hoped.

“Hey, Y/N...are you free sometime next week? I wondered if you want to grab a drink?”
You had been interrupted by Lin’s director at that point. Lin had given you an awkward hug and promised to text you, then you’d left. Now you’re walking home and wondering if that really happened.
As far as you’d been aware, Lin had just viewed you as a colleague. This was a real surprise. You’d only just got around to realising you like him, now you’re going on a date?
The first text comes just as you’re brushing your teeth (and thinking about him on stage, his cute butt criminally swamped by those baggy jeans…).
Lin: Hey, sorry we got interrupted! So I was thinking maybe we could meet up on Sunday?
Y/N: Sure, where do you want to go?
Lin: Well, I thought we’d go somewhere in the Heights, seems appropriate!
You laugh at that and agree a meeting time and place. Then you decide to be bold.
Y/N: I was so surprised when you asked me out, wasn’t expecting that…
Lin: What can I say, I guess I missed you ;)
Y/N: I missed you too :)
——————————————————
He texts you the next day when he sees something on tv that he thinks you’ll like. You text him later when you remember something from the show that you had a question about. As you chat back and forth, it’s a little like being back in the rehearsal room again.
——————————————————
Lin suggests getting a drink at a little neighbourhood place just around the corner from where you’ve met. “It’s quiet, nothing fancy, but their chilli fries are the bomb.”, Lin says. “That sounds great.”, you say-relieved to be going somewhere relaxed-you’re a little nervous. You’ve barely seen Lin outside of work, never mind on a date. It’s a couple of blocks to the bar and you spend most of the walk gushing about Lin’s musical-the first chance you’ve had since you saw it.
You stop at a wide awning and Lin pushes the door open, holding it as you go through. The place is cosy-all red booths and low lighting-an old-fashioned place, and it puts you at ease. Lin grabs a booth at the back and the waitress is there even before you’ve sat down. You both order beer and start to look through the menu. Lin reads through everything but then insists he has to get the chilli fries because they’re so good. You order fries with a list of toppings that’s nearly as long as the menu.
“So how’s work?”, asks Lin once your order has been taken. “Meh”, you shrug. “It’s kinda boring. I’m the TA for a geology professor and I just...rocks...I can’t get enthused.”, you joke. “Bet there are no karaoke coffee breaks”, says Lin with a wink. “God no, no late nights in the rehearsal room either.”, you say with a laugh. “Ahh that’s gotta be a relief though-your evenings are your own again!”, Lin says. “I...actually I miss it…”, you say, feeling a little shy. Lin leans closer to you and lowers his voice to a stage whisper. “Nah, you missed me”, he says with a cheeky grin.
You shake your head and laugh. But he’s not wrong, you really have missed him. And now that he’s made you laugh, you feel the nervousness start to slip away. Once you stop focusing on the fact that this is a date, being with him again feels familiar and reassuring. You fall back into old rhythms and are reminded of the many reasons you like him.
Within half an hour of being back in his company, any nerves have totally evaporated. When he scooches closer to you as he’s talking, it feels completely natural. When his hand touches your knee as he speaks, you stare at it, thinking again about how you started out the week as his ex-TA and now you’re on a date and his hand is on your knee and you’re wondering what it’s like to kiss him.
He starts to take his hand away, interpreting your staring as discomfort. You hurriedly grab it and interlace your fingers. He grins and squeezes your hand, knee touching yours as he turns towards you, sitting sideways in the booth, waxing lyrical about his friend Chris, who you met on Friday.
——————————————————
“Life is too short to be all ‘ooooh just a salad for me’”, Lin says as he shovels the last of his chilli into his mouth. “I totally agree”, you say. “I know, I’ve seen you in charge of a bag of gummy bears!”, he teases. You go to make a snappy retort but laugh and concede “That’s fair”. Lin laughs. The waitress comes to clear the table and you order more drinks.
“Do you think you’ll be coming back to our campus anytime soon?”, you ask. Lin shrugs “I really don’t know. At the workshop next week, we’re hosting some producers...so, if that goes well…”, he tails off as your new drinks arrive. “Well, selfishly, I’m sad-I enjoyed working with you”, you say when the waitress is gone. “Then we’ll just have to spend more time together...not working.”, he says. You respond with a smile and lift your beer bottle to clink with his.
——————————————————
You could listen to him talk about anything, you decide. He is so enthusiastic, so animated-always talking with his hands. And his eyes are so expressive.
When you talk about your family, he runs his thumb over your knuckles, eyes never leaving your face as he listens intently. It’s the only part of being with him that is unfamiliar-this new physicality. Over the months you worked together, you had actually laughed and cried in front of one another but professional boundaries meant you rarely touched. The novelty of this intimacy is making something as small as holding hands kind of thrilling.
——————————————————
When you drink the last of your third beer, you reluctantly suggest that it’s time to go-there are only four of you left in the whole place and it’s pretty late. Lin puts down money for the check and slides out of the booth. “Yeah, we really should get you home.”, he says. “Uhh, why’s that?”, you ask, confused. He holds out a hand to help you up. “Duh”, he says, “because the sooner we say goodnight, the sooner I get to kiss you goodnight”.
You burst out laughing as he pulls you up. “That’s very presumptuous...!”, you say, causing him to look worried for a second. “What if I was gonna kiss you goodnight?”, you tease.
——————————————————
It’s only 10 blocks to your place, but it takes a long time to get there. You dawdle, strolling along holding hands, chatting about everything and nothing. At the crosswalks, sometimes he slips his arm around your waist.
“This didn’t feel weird.”, Lin says as you get near to your place. “I was worried it would.”. “I was nervous at first,”, you admit. “but then we were talking and laughing and it felt just like every other time we’d been together...except you were holding my hand”, you grin. He smiles.
“It’s like with seeing In The Heights”, you say. “I’d heard some of your songs before and I’ve heard you sing a lot, and seeing you perform the whole thing is just adding an extra layer.”
“Although...oh this is me”, you indicate your building and steer him towards the steps.”Although?”, he prompts as you stop in front of the door. “Although I wasn’t prepared for how I’d feel seeing you on stage.”, you answer. Lin looks confused “How’s that?”, he asks.
You look him in the eye. “The way you...shine, how you control an audience. The confidence you exude and just your talent...It’s sexy as hell.”.
Lin raises his eyebrows. “Really?”. He moves closer, placing his hands on your hips. You nod as you look him in the eye. “Looking at you a whole new way now”, you say in a soft voice. He pulls your waist against his. “Good…”, he says as his lips meet yours. Your tummy flips as his mouth moves with yours, and again when his hand goes into your hair. Your own hands go to his face as you open your mouth and let his tongue touch yours-causing another jolt in your tummy...and lower.
When Lin breaks away, you can’t keep the grin from your face. “Well. That’s new.”, you say with a little laugh, your hands now resting against his chest. “Uh huh”, he says, his voice husky. He isn’t laughing. He runs his thumb over your cheek to give you just a second’s pause before he kisses you again.
You link your arms around his neck, leaning into the kiss. Yes it’s new, but it feels like things should always have been this way between you. You step backwards, pulling him with you until your back is against one of the concrete pillars that flank your doorway. He stumbles a little in surprise but quickly regains his composure to press your body into the stone, his hands moving up to the sides of your face as he kisses you more intensely.
You return his kisses with equal fervour and gently but firmly grip the back of his head as you push your tongue into his mouth. When eventually you break apart, you’re both flushed and a little shorter of breath.
“I had a great time”, you say, still holding on to him. “Me too”, Lin grins and gives you a final kiss. “Maybe I’ll call you tomorrow?”, he says. “Sure. G’night, Lin.”, you say as you untangle yourself from his arms and let yourself into the lobby.
Ten minutes later, your phone rings.
“I couldn’t wait until tomorrow. About our second date…”
