tangentally about your art, do you have any tips for drawing hands and faces?

for faces im not really sure how i can explain it since faces tend to be like the first things people learn to draw, so ive been drawing htem for yrs yk? In real life though, faces arent symmetrical. but in anime and cartoons we tend to prefer them to be perfectly even, for front facing images its easy to just flip the canvas or even flip the lineart i youre working digital. if youre on paper using a mirror or taking a photo can help.

eyes GENERALLY should be one eye apart from eachother but they dont have to be in all art styles. to keep the eyes looking focused you should be a little more in the middle, not too much because theyll look cross eyed, but slightly in the middle

right here, in the first pic is what im talking about, her eyes are closer to her nose. then i took dianas eyes and moved the irises to be centered in the eyelids, she looks like her eyes are looking in diferent directions lmao.

for noses it really depends on your style but it is 100% possible to translate different nose shapes into even anime styles, the best advice i can give is to just practice drawing different faces and trying to translate them into your style, you'll figure out what looks cutest to you.

and then after i said this i actually remember making a specifically regarding black people that had a section on noses hold on

for hands it again you gotta do a lot of referencing. unfortunately for me, i have chunky fat baby hands, so when i reference myself the hands tend to all be fat baby hands too lmao. but it does help at least in figuring out the composition of a hand and where all the joints go

for my projects ill be honest and say i heavily rely on a lot of assets and stocks, these are all made for artists to use freely and are even okay to trace. Adorka stock has literally been carrying a lot of my art lmao I also use Hato Kings hand references and CSP 3d models for really hard poses. speaking of Hato king they have a book for kindle that has even more hand references and lots of information on how to draw them, in both english and japanese so if you like their references please buy the book

Although when it comes to tracing stocks its very important imo that you adjust it to suit your style, use it as a tool but also a reference for learning. if your art isnt going for realism you dont want to have a perfectly realistic hand and then a toony body lol

sorry i know you probably get this ask a lot but!! how do you figure out how you want to draw new people/characters?? or like how do you manage to keep up the steam of drawing them even if they dont turn out exactly how you want the first go around... your arts always been such a massive inspiration to me and ive always wanted to be able to stick with drawing the same people as devotedly as you do!!

lately i kind of just got into the habit of like, accepting that the first few times of drawing someone new, is always gonna look a bit like dookIE,,

like earlythis year i think was the first time i drew jungle boy, and these were the initial drawingS..

there's a lot of stiffness in these bc i had to try my hardest to not just make 'luke perry' . but like he DOES have some resemblance..but still has his own like.. facE NDIOSHFDSIF. it was hard trying to figure that out

so a lot of the drwaings of him came out kinda stiff or just clearly insecure. usually i'd let it ruin my month but now i only just let it ruin my week (HEHE..JOKES). i kinda of just let it go and accept that it's gonna be ugly and move on to the next attempt!

i do this over and over and over until i finally reach an 'aha!' moment for the face. and once i have it i RIDE IT TILL IT'S DRY BABYY

it helps a lot to doodle as much as u can! use doodle time to just attempt the face and let that me the moment you allow the ugliest shit you've ever witnessed..ive been recently doing this with christian cage, since my weakspot is older people..CRINGE

so with enough scribbling and mindless doodling (YES.. MINDLESS DOODLING!) , i eventually get to a point where im confident enough to draw these guys without reference or with an easier grasp on how to simplify them in my style!

(with jack i realized he sort of has luke perry's face but has a big cabbage patch head. but i also take note of his eyes which is something that stands out to me a lot!)

(with cage.. we are still working on that, but i know ill get it eventually, just need some more time and patience!)

i take a Lot out of the book "sun circles and human hands: the southeastern indians - art and industry" (2001 edition, not the 1957 one) which i have a physical copy of and i have sticky notes tabbing out out and also annotated highlighting every mention of the chickasaw and of sites where i know the chickasaw [or our ancestors, like the chicaza and other early mississippian/SE ntv cultures] so i can reference stuff i know would be from us, but i also take inspiration from all the designs in it because we were all a part of an interconnected cultural network of art

if you are from a tribe that would be from mississippian culture or the southeastern ceremonial complex/southeastern cult as it used to be called, or you know your people wouldve come from places within that like spiro or moundville, and you want to bring more native styling into your art this is THEEE book i would recommend. it is insanely useful. i cant vouch 100% for the text of it, and the second half is mostly kinda grainy b&w scanned photos of pottery and other items lmao, but the first half has lineart depictions OF designs found, with the attribution for the site they were found at. it is a Massive wealth of symbols and style and has been the best thing for wanting to study and emulate SE ndn art. for real i lent a copy to my grandma and then couldnt find where it was and i had to just order a new copy bc i use it so damn much

like i would post pages of it, and before i bought it i survived off the pinterest pics of scanned pages, but i cannot say enough just buy the book and look through it bc its just perfect its so useful. just posting a few pages doesnt do any justice to the wealth of style and art in it. ive tried to make myself some mock style/symbol guides from it, but even those fail to capture the variety of stuff in there and its why i still have it on hand for reference bc every time i get stumped theres so many ideas in there

i had done sinti homma, the red snake earlier, and i wanted to do a little motley of other simple transparent animals to go with it. so i did! ive got a few different animals that i played with doing, but a lot of them ended up veering too much off of the more hardline ntv style i wanted to do, and the others didnt fit the guideline i had made - i wanted them all to have a pointed tail that pointed to some corner of the frame, and curl around in the square a bit to have more of a sense of motion. i was thinking deer, turtle, spider... but none of those really fit that. so i flipped thru SC&HH for some ideas and came up with some :3

the bottom left one on the first pic there gave me a good idea of what to do with a rat tail, and on the bottom right of that same pic is the Fattest fucking fish and i lifted a lot of that design to use for my fish (and while we're here, the rattler tails on the top right of that pic were what i used for sinti hommas tail), and the bottom left on the second pic gave me the idea for the lizards legs/feet shape, and then i used the chickasaw vocab flashcards of animals to think of animal ideas and so i used the pinti from there to jump me off into doing a rat

theyre all named after the chickasaw words - sinti (snake), shunti (rat/rodent), kanunuk (lizard, specifically green striped lizard, which is why i made it green with stripes lol), nunni (fish) . i use the chickasaw dictionary webpage a lot these days though i should use my dictionary copies more bc they use the spelling style i dont prefer lol

i also want to do maybe a sort of pop art style big print of them, like repeated with different colors behind them? and/or them in a medicine wheel? but those are still wip so we shall see!

question: how did you Truly begin to draw humans? what tutorials did you use? how did your very first piece look like (pls dont be embarassed)? because i can draw animals so very easily but my humans look like a cross hybrid between monkeys, aliens, and a bit of cats. i Cant learn humans no matter what i try T__T

For me it was about practice and finding the most fun and efficient way for me to practice. I read a bunch of tutorials and downloaded some lessons and stuff, but those were only really helpful to me after I had already been drawing for a while. I didn't fully understand a lot of what I was reading/watching until I tried it first and then applied what I learned to that drawing or the next drawing.

What worked best for me was trying to get certain parts down in my style and then once I felt comfortable, practice the next part I felt most comfortable with. June’s eyes have basically stayed the same since that's was the easiest thing for me to grasp, then I moved onto her lips, facial structure, nose, etc. I needed to treat each part of her design with a certain level of care, and once I was satisfied with the way she looked in my style I knew I how to apply my style when I started using live references (which has literally just been the last drawing or 2 I've done of her).

I also experimented a lot. Looked at a ton of production art of characters I liked and other artists I like the styles of. Found a few models/actresses that looked similar to her or had features I liked and did studies of this faces (either tracing over photos of them or doing measured studies). For every one drawing of her I post there's at least a few studies and 2-5 attempts I made to get that one sketch. I have a lot of "meh" art of her I keep around to remind me of how far I've come and as general examples of what I don't want to do.

It also takes time, and you're gonna be learning/changing constantly. I literally spent like 4 months trying to perfect this one drawing of her and was super happy with it, then changed her again 2 days later 😂

Here's her progress from 2020 till now. My other characters I haven't practiced nearly as much but they've deffo improved alongside her. Humans all have the same basic structure so it's more about playing with the proportions and features and getting used to drawing them with repetition.

Still a lot I wanna work on and improve, but I'm really really excited about the overall progress and that's what's keeping me motivated.

hiii i really want to start drawing ponies and i was wondering if you had any tips?

honestly!! i think its good to literally just copy screenshots. you can add your own style and flair to it, but using pony screenshots as reference will give you a good idea of how ponies are shaped and stuff

of course if you dont want to copy the show style, it might be helpful to learn some real horse anatomy (or other ungulates lol… or any animal… ponies dont really look like ponies after all). to be so honest with you ive never really used a real-life reference for my pony anatomy, so everything is just guesswork, and i do think it shows. and i think thats fine since i do this all for dun and im not striving for perfection or realism. but references can definitely be helpful

also like! redesigning ponies is a lot of fun and helps me get the hang of drawing specific ponies in the way i WANT to draw them! its good!

basically im no professional and my best advice is to draw a lot of ponies and have a lot of fun ✌️

so i had this random idea that i just COULDN’T get out of my head.

i hadn’t really seen any genderbend of mario and luigi as much as i had seen peach. and when i did see some, they were mostly just anime girls with red and green caps on. so i kept wondering how a girl version, *with their original form in mind*, would look like. 

that’s sort of the difficulty of this thing,how would their bodytype translate to a femme form?, what would i do without their mustaches? it’s their trademark! how could you tell its mario and luigi without their iconic mustaches?. what about their noses?.  also using references from the already existing girl characters in the mario universe, most of them wear lipstick, would mario and luigi have to wear lipstick then? what about their hair?. but im also thinking about how nintendo designs girl characters and try to match that to make it as canon looking as possible

now onto explaining the pictures. 

1 - the motive behind the lipstick idea. shows their hair with and without their hats, how much would be visible with them on. to sort of match the og design instead of having their bangs under the hats which just looks funky.

2 - paper mario/smaller looking/manga design, mario and luigi have very expressive faces and body shapes and i didnt want the genderbend to prevent that bc “girls r supposed to be pretty statues buh buh buh” that typically makes them look stiff or like just hot girls in a masceraude. m&l have a typical “squash and stretch duo” (i swear this makes sense pls look it up). the bodies are supposed to look neutral, that could belong to either the guys or girls and shows their natural body shape while holding the same goofyness.

3/4 - lipstick ideas, a natural shade vs the brown matching the OG’s mustaches and their hair. the brown and natural lipstick shade works better(imo) than something the girls from peach’s universe would typically wear like red or pink. the brown and nude color just sort of reflects their whole “we’re just two italian guys from brooklyn who get down and dirty with our sewage plumbing job” so i dont think they’d wear anything bright even if they were girls, if they even wear lipstick at all!! it doesnt matter which one really. 

5/6 - rough body sketches. the blue one is their bodies more semi-“realistically” or just more like the usual art style, you can see the curve and flops. the red is more rounded up, basically how those 3d nintendo models of mario and luigis bodies, simpler shapes, smooth with no interruption, how nintendo would model their bodies in games basically. you can see the simple little tummy luigi has on louise’s body too. basically a “if u remove the boobs its basically them” as identical bodies as possible. 

this is obviously not the finished product, as i still have their clothes to go. maybe i’ll even add voice headcanons?. its like a little project. again, i dont know where this urge came from but i love complicating already existing character design :D

sorry i have a kinda weird ask… (i’m 19 for reference) is age regression just thumb sucking and baby talk? or can you regress to like 6-7years old? i’m like stressing out haha because i have a lot of different ‘habits’ that make me feel better that are typically found in children. like i hug my knees when i’m upset, or hide in small spaces, or i dress kind of younger… not like a baby, but similar to how i did when i was like a 6 year old. (example sweatshirts with more kid friendly patterns, jeans with stars or flowers sewn into them, bows in my hair, the really short choppy bangs that lots of kids have, and just looking at pictures of me when i was a kid i have the exact same style now and dress basically the same) idk it’s nothing sexual or like little little- no diapers or little skirts or anything. but just small things common with kids. like i pack my lunches in those sectioned off lunch boxes made for elementary schoolers and they usually have just carrots grapes pb&j- or like juice boxes or cutting my food into squares or stars orusing a cookie cutter to shape it cute. idk this feels hard to explain but i basically just adopt a lot of habits or routines that i had back when i was like 6-7ish and i didn’t even really realize that i was doing it until about a week ago and i just feel so uncomfortable and i don’t know if i’m age regressing. does this sound like age regression? or do you think i’m just weird? i definitely did have a very traumatizing childhood and so i don’t know if it’s a response to that or if that’s just how i am.. i don’t use baby talk per say.. i sometimes kind of talk like how a kid would.. but just in my mannerisms not in the actual way it sounds. i also like to have a lot of ‘cute’ stuff - like stuffed animals or cat patterned or flower patterned or heart patterned sheets.. or coloring books but ones made for kids. stuff like that. i act normal around people, i’m very shy so i don’t really talk to anyone that i don’t already know, and my only friends are people i’ve known for years so they just already know how i am.. but still. but i don’t like act like i’m a baby.. or even a toddler …. i kind of pout sometimes but not on purpose. or like all the time if i’m upset i do something i did when i was a little kid. like i’ll play a video game i loved as a kid… or i’ll make myself a snack that i loved as a kid../ or just do something that i did when i was little to calm me down. like i don’t know there’s more but it’s hard to explain all of it. basically i don’t act like how a modern kid would (someone born in like 2016) like.. i just act almost exactly like how i did when **i** was a kid. idk if that changes anything… anyways sorry for rambling. i feel embarrassed saying this bc i know it’s weird for an adult, even a young one, to act like that.. i’m not like a perv or anything it’s not sexual. i’ve said that already but idk when ppl see age aggression a lot of the time they associate it with a sexual thing.. idk sorry i’m bad at explaining stuff. anyways does this sound like age regression or am i just weird?

if someone's age regression involved them acting like a kid from a different time than them then id jsut think they were weird or that its something else, i think its pretty normal for ur age regression to be more like.. as if ur still a child.

honestly tho from this alone, i dont know. i would think maybe youre childish but not necessarily age regressing. in my experience, when i age regress, i usually talk differently. like a dumb child or something. i also become extremely sensitive, prone to bawling, scared if someone yells or raises their voice, more childlike mannerisms. its not a constant thing for me at all, i noticed it only happens when im vulnerable in some way. if im afraid or stressed, for example. i wouldnt say ive got a childish diet or wear kids clothing, but also i dont age regress anywhere near as much as i used to as a teenager and i think it has become less and less prominent the older i got. i also dont think i get childish interests in those times either, but honestly the things i liked as a kid werent that childish anyways and i enjoy a lot of it today ? i also have a lot of plushies which when living alone i would hug them to sleep and sometimes i pout and the like but i feel like thats normal hfdhfdhs. its nothing sexual for me either and i think in general age regression is more like, a trauma thing rather than a sexual thing. the people who have made it sexual or a lifestyle thing need to be seriously evaluated esp the men that get off on that (actually the men who get off on that should die, but anyways.)

also i think doing things that u have loved since childhood isnt age regression, i feel like thats a pretty logical self-soothing tactic? i also often will go to things that are comforting to me and such things are often positive things from my childhood

gonna be honest i kinda keep forgetting that this movie exists. the animation and music is very... rw/by. for better or for worse. corny quippy one liners. it's very corny. adding a cut bc this'll probably get a bit rambly.

AHHH THE FLASHBACK IS A STILL FRAME. the first thing to make me laugh wasnt even a joke it was the single still frame flashback. well. there was a slight zoom?

it's trying to be funny so bad its trying so hard. the serious dialogue is corny but could be worse. overall its better than the crossover comics? making the DC characters teenagers seems pointless.

oh god the dialogue is so hammy. the fists are hammed. weiss good and weiss dad bad yes i noticed. christ im only 8 minutes in. physically recoiling at some of the jokes. like its nothing jokes its nothinggg.

IS THAT SUPPOSED TO BE BRUCE? he's been on screen for like 10 seconds and he already sounds and acts like "wealthy teenage tiktok star tries to pander to the less ~economically privileged~" and god it keeps going it hasnt even been a minute yet. did they make them teenagers bc otherwise bruce wouldve run off and found some little boy to help him solve everything without the help of anyone else. is that why. bc honestly yeah adult bruce is hard to write into a team setting.

bruce continues to be embarrassing but also. im learning that the still image flashbacks are just a thing thats gonna happen in this movie. style wise its very much a rw/by movie, so its just probably not gonna hit for me. its the kind of show i watched in middle school and grew out of by 8th grade. even then, my interest kind of started and ended with the character design and the basic world building elements. emphasis on basic, trying to understand the more in depth aspects is a bit of a waste of time.

oh and im still at the 10 minute mark. "ive already gone through all the other dc x rw/by content" i thought, "might as well watch the movies" i thought.

i think theyre trying to write bruce doing a smart detective thing? unfortunately rw/by is very bad at writing people doing smart things. 1) cant stand bruces voice in this 2) god hes so annoying and this whole scene is embarrassing to watch.

GAHH. THE SAME FLASHBACK FRAME CLARK HAD BUT ZOOMED OUT THIS TIME. true cinema. and i think theyre alluding to time travel as well as dimension travel, so even the rw/by girls get to have weird "we're not where we should be" flashbacks.

diana manhandles the small boy, fun. it also rife with required reading bc if you arent fully dedicated to keeping track of all rw/by lore then fuck you. these movies dont seem to require much DC knowledge but they cram in a lot of references to rw/by lore that i only know from video essays put out by ex-fans.

MARI IS THAT YOU?? and jess... girls u deserve a better movie. oh vic got braids? nice. also that joke was nothing. all the jokes are nothing.

the best jokes so far have been. the ones about how convoluted and hard to get into rw/by is. because of course. sigh. i do think the DC characters are better utilized and integrated than they were in the comics at least. seeing mari and jess get animated is really cool, and overall i like the redesigns. a few of the characters have commented on suddenly being deaged but mari's acknowledgement of it is the first to feel like a natural line of dialogue rather than exposition.

montage of bruce learning to use his bat powers so that they can get that out of the way before he joins the rest of the group. separate things that were already discussed being re-discussed so that we can have a "everyone talks at once scene". they. what. huh? they had a normal conversation that landed on "lets split into groups since theres enough of us to reasonably do that. then they have an argument which ends at the exact same conclusion.

are they really gonna have a "yang thinks diana is hot and blake gets jealous" plot line? really? and another love triangle. cy tries to ask nora to explain this worlds weapons, noras boyfriend(?) gets mad and then cy gets mad back and ends up being the one everyone gets upset with. it feels a bit. just. super uncomfortable. cy wasnt flirting he was just. talking to nora.

oh thank god that bit is over. now back to jess! possibly the most interesting character here. her design is probably my least favorite of the bunch tho, just because it feel a bit... too anime? it reminds me too much of my danganronpa phase, lol.

jaune doing plot device things. jess introspection. its not the most interesting thing but its better than uh. whatever happened with cy earlier. sorry im still thinking about that. i think they were just going for hormonal and temperamental teenager moment but it uh. came off weird.

plot twist everything was uh. void. ptsd monster things. the plots about to get convoluted isnt it.

diana is pretty decently fleshed out in this one. and it looks like they didnt lean into the diana being hot as a source of relationship conflict that much aside from a few jokes, thank god.

back to the monster fighting group, dear god theyre doing one of those. 2 guys fight over girl who goes "umm i can take care of myself >:(". GOD SHUT UP. FUCK. ITS A JEALOUS LOVE TRIANGLE PLOT. please let this die sooner rather than later.

I believe you're refering to this post regarding Floyd's nicknames, and I agree with it! like he does with Azul and Jade, the people he's truly close with and respects he would call by their actual name, not one of his nicknames. although I'm very attached to shrimpy as I find it very cute and I'd kind of miss it if he dropped it altogether, so I like the idea of him varying between it and his S/O's name!

fun fact: I like to draw occasionally, so character design is something I have a lot of interest in!

I feel like my thoughts go along with the general consensus of their designs, but sometimes even the obvious should be stated, so I'll say everything in my mind!

AZUL

I have a confession to make. I'm easily attracted by anime characters with white hair. I KNOOOOW IT'S SUCH A COMMON TROPE AND I FALL FOR IT EVERYTIME, HOOK, LINE AND SINKER. so him having his gray-ish hair color is already a positive point in my books. differently from Ursula, his hair is not wild and free, but rather very well kept, tamed and wavy! (and difficult to draw, lmao. the notes in the 2020 visual book make a comment on how it's important to make an outline before drawing it, or else the right side can come out too big)

even with it's difficulty, I think the little strand that's just a tad longer and curls following his face, reminiscing of a tentacle, is just so charming, it's a nice little detail that makes all the difference! another thing you can't really see it's that he has AN UNDERCUT!! WHICH IS SO COOL!! I miss the time I used to have an undercut too.

the choice of giving him glasses but not the twins is a bit ironic, since octopi don't have much of a bad vision at all, meanwhile eels are almost blind. (I think they use contact lenses. just imagine Floyd forgetting his and he can't see anything and he's just. confused.) I think it's most likely to make him fit even more in the stereotypical "smart and cunning anime character" profile. it miiight have been a reference to the darker shade around Ursula's eyes, but I honestly doubt it. they do fit quite nicely, so I'm not complaining at all!

one thing I like about his eyebrows are how expressive they are, which brings Ursula's eyebrows to mind! they seem to have very similar expressions in that sense, as the drawing of him with a mean grin and arched eyebrows is reminiscent of Ursula's expression! his eyes aren't half lidded like hers tho, a difference that pops out very clearly if you compare both pics of them looking straight ahead while smiling. Ursula's seem more menacing, as if she's up to no good, while Azul's is more polite.

I loooove the mole near his mouth, mirroring Ursula's, it's so charming!! and I don't know if you've ever stared at his lips before but. look. they are very glossy and they SHINE, his mouth looks amazing, he might not pass on Ursula's birght red lipstick but he DEFINETLY has lip balm at least

now let's look at his drip. Octavinelle's dorm uniform makes an homage to the Sea Witch's elegant style, using a stylish combination of suits in more neutral tones, either in black and white or in shades of purple and gray, making a reference for her lavander skin tone and purple tentacles.

look I'm gonna be honest. I don't know what's up with the fedora. the iconic shell is a nice touch, but why must he wear a fedora? he could look professional and mature without it!! I am. not the biggest fan of hats. AND HIS HAIR LOOKS SO PRETTY WHY MUST HE HIDE IT

the bowtie I think it's a bit silly, but that might be because it's not common at all here where I live. I've only seen normal ties, so for me it might have looked better with one (not in this purple shade tho, maybe in a more muted tone of it. I do like the contrast of color against the white). I also don't see much what's the point of the grey scarf but it does help him look fancy, though the Octavinelle crest on it makes it look a bit like Harry Potter merch

as he's the housewarden, he gets a special long coat that does make him look a bit like a mafia boss, especially because he's not actually wearing it, only having it drapped over his shoulders. (or perhaps it's the bowtie. was that why it was there all along!?) and the white gloves? it's very snazzy and suspicious at the same time, but I can see the elegance of hiding your hands as if you're a victorian maiden hiding your ankles and shoulders to preserve your modesty.

the cane is SO COOL. I don't think he uses it for anything other than looking intimidating but's it's so cool. maybe it helped him to get used to walking with only two legs (adapting from eight to two must have been hard) when he started his first year and he's kept it. his shoes are pretty normal, expected even, BUT WHY ARE HIS SOCKS NEON PURPLE. I know it's to match his silly mafioso bow tie BUT WHY.

JADE

I'll start with things that will apply to Floyd as well, but I only want to say it once

Flotsam and Jetsam are... not the prettiest around. I'd say they are very far from it, even. Which only surprises me more that the twins look SO GOOD when they were based off of this??

as a reference to the moray eels, Ursula's beloved pets and minions, the twin's hair follow their color scheme, teal in it's majority with a dark gray stripe, and each have one yellow eye that helps to differentiate from which eel they were inspired by. their merman forms also make reference to them, as their tails are quite similar and they have fins and gills, which is not something the merman in the Little Mermaid used to have.

thankfully, for everyone's happiness, their physical similarities end there.

JADE TIME!! I have another confession to make: I also love character's with hair that has more than one color. I'M NOT TOO HARD TO PLEASE ALRIGHT!

Jade's hair is very unusual and at first glance might even look strange, a mix of color and shapes in an already complicated design. I think it plays along well with him, the little J shaped strand of hair hugs his face and calls attention to it, breaking the monotony from his otherwise short hair and balancing it's color out. the way his side bang is cut in such an angular and sharp way gives it such a nice shape, and I like how his hair is well kept and brushed! (differently from Azul's, his hair is a pleasure to draw, as I sometimes find myself doodling it at the corner of my books, absentmindedly)

THE SHAPE OF HIS EYEBROWS !!! they also feel quite angular and pointed, different from Floyd's, which compliment his eye shape very well. AND HIS EYES?? I could look into then all day. the way they are sharp and pass the feeling of his witty personality, they are angled upwards and give him an alluring sense, his upper lashes are fuller and give a cutting look to his eyes, the little eyebags (?) under them breaking the lightness of his skin and adding some color around them, even his eyelid fold helps to create such a charming gaze. I LOVE THE HETEROCHROMIA!! they aren't wildly constrasting, like I commonly see, but rather a duller tone of the other, which is how it usually happens in real life! such a polite look and by it's shape alone you can tell there's something behind it, something sharp enough to almost break the surface.

even his nose differs from Floyd's, as it feels a little softer and round ended, less curved and more of a straight line. I love these little spot the differences games, while they might seem like such minor details, they come along to create a bigger picture that differentiates the twins and each is their own person very well, not only with their body language but also by their appearence!!

OH AND HIS LIPS. I know I know it's the art style but still. the way his bottom lip is so full and shiny?? the way the corners of his mouth curl upwards just so. the carefully constructed politeness. how he rarely shows his teeth to keep the more harmless appearence, only letting them be seen if he's trying to intimidate someone or if he's actually happy. the dangers of his sharp teeth hiding like a shark under the waves !!!!!!

AND JADE'S EARRING! like on Floyd, it's such a dynamic little shape and gives them a bit of a more approachable look? and then you discover how they even got it in the first place LMAOOO. wait, let me give some context: on Usrula's spell, she says "Beluga Sevruga, Come winds of the Caspian Sea!" what does that mean? beluga is a variety of caviar (and of the more expensive ones), and it's harvested from the Sevruga sturgeon, native from the Caspian Sea. the story of how the twins got those earrings is that they won a fight against a sturgeon and kept the scales as a prize, so really even their cute little silly earrings are indicative of how dangerous they can be and how they like to flaunt that around LOL. in story they are also mentioned to be known as a good luck charm, due to being a popular ingredient in the Sea Witch's potions. it's such a nice reference! and it also implies the twins might have a bit of a supersticious side to them, which is so interesting.

the merman form is so cool too! as mentioned, I really like how they use more elements of moray eels and lets them have a more fish-like look. the stripes are elegant and a nice detail that brings these aspects from the eels, not to mention his body is literally luminiscent! like! he glows underwater!! how cool is that?? the fins in place of ears are cute, and the webbed hand makes a lot of sense! the tail adding lenght to them and making them twice their human size is a nice way of making them grow without distorting their proportions. (just why. why must he have abs. eel abs. it was a whole jumpscare the first time I saw them.)

I'm. gonna sound a bit hypocritical now. but! I think the hat looks nice on Jade. HEAR ME OUT! I'm still not the biggest fan of hats, but Jade's is not like Azul's, it has a wider, less square box like, shape, the shell is hidden as to not overdo with the details and leave it as a more discreet one, and the way it's drapped on his head, following his bangs and the linearity of his longer stripe, gives such a fluidity to the whole thing and manages to make him look suave!

also, one thing about him is how he's always prim and proper, tucked in neatly in any formal suit and showing his diligence. there's something about people who are always so covered up and formal looking. the profissionalism... the maturity... the sense he's above you... the clothes make the man...

ANYWAYS. I like that the shade of the regular uniform is a lavander that goes easy on the eyes (housewarden's neon purple, take notes), it gives a classy feel and goes along great with the general color scheme! I hope they are careful on laundry day to wash those separatedly from the white uniforms.

again with the little bow tie. the white manages to compliment his gloves and the pocket square very well, but it stills looks a bit silly to me. I'm sorry, but here where I live the only people I've seen using those are clowns, literally (look up Patati e Patatá. it's Jade and Floyd).

he thankfully doesn't show his socks, but his shoes have white details on them that I feel that kind of break the sleekness of the whole. I know it would be way too monocromatic otherwise, but I don't think it'd be necessarily a bad thing, especially since they have no problem in doing it with his other designs. with the ones he has on, it looks like he's about to start tap dancing at any minute.

still, Jade is slaying

FLOYD

as I've already discussed some of his design aspects in Jade's part, I'll go over only what I see as unique to him.

his hair is messier than Jade's, wilder and spikier, and it kind of looks like he doesn't brush it in the mornings, but that's part of his charm, this unkept look! the F shaped longer strand seems a bit fuller than Jade's as well.

his eyebrows are higher and less sharp than Jade's, angled downwards and following his eye shape that makes him look sleepy or bored more often, less atent than Jade, and exposes his double eyelid better. his eyes are more expressive, oftentimes curving in excitement or with his pupils contracting when angry.

the shape of his nose is pointy, sharper and slightly more curved. ONE THING I REALLY LIKE: his mouth. Floyd is always showing his emotions, and it's delightful to look at his jagged teeth as he smiles openly! even when he's not emoting so drastically you can still catch a glimpse of them!

the thing is that while they have their differences, the twins designs are very similar, as they really separate from each other in their personalities.

the hat also looks better on him than on Azul (sorry Azul, yours is a bit goofy and doesn't compliment your hair very well), and while it follows some of the reasons I've cited on Jade's, there's also something else. the hat helps to show his impulsive nature! how so? well, I think like this: the rest of the uniform he has to wear, there's no escaping it, but the hat? he can do wathever he wants with it. if he feels like putting it on, he does, if he doesn't feel like it, he can just not. it's not a crucial part like the shirt or the suit, so people won't get much on his case about it. in the card, he's taken it off, simply because he wanted to.

he's also more free than Jade's buttoned up look, as he quite literally doesn't button up many parts of it, his jacket is open, his collarbones are exposed, his silly clown bow tie is untied, his scarf is flowing in the wind. Floyd doesn't like to be restricted by tight fitting clothes and honestly I get him.

as much as Floyd is interested in shoe fashion, I don't like his shoes at all. in most of his cards actually. I don't know if it's because I know nothing about it and use an All Star for every occasion, but his shoes always look goofy because of his socks. ALWAYS. who lets him keep getting away with this??? someone please stop him he's comminting crimes against fashion with those socks. THE NEON PURPLE DOESN'T EVEN GOES WELL WITH THE SOFT LAVANDER OF HIS SHIRT. THERE'S NOTHING GOING ON FOR HIM HERE. not to mention he's also using the tap dancer shoes.

CONCLUSION

I really like Octavinelle's under the sea theme and how well their designs make callbacks for their counterparts, making nice references for such an iconic villain! all in all they are very elegant and pass a professional vibe that's characteristic of the dorm and it's students, leaving enough space for their own little quirks to shine through.

I love to take a look at them like this!! I might have a terrible fashion sense for myself, but when it comes to character design I suddenly become a critic lol. though I feel that the game manages very well to create interesting designs that calls to mind the original villain's and leave enough room for their own personalities to shine, catching your attention and staying easily on your memory! all the characters have unique little things that differentiate them and make even people that have never played the game recognize them!

Lavender. I love it so much. Nearly everything in my room smells like it too. My sister got me a lavender diffuser and I had it on all day. A fictional universe you would love to be in...

Easily the Sweet Tooth universe. If you havent watched it, (you really should... it's on Netflix) this deer-human hybrid kid (gus/sweet tooth) wants to find his mother. A big guy called big man/jeppard takes gus to red rock Colorado. BUT GUESS WHAT? (chicken bu-) there is a VERY lethal disease that they call the sick. SO its basically post-apocalyptic type world.

Also Bubble too. It's an anime movie where Tokyo was encapsulated by a bubble.

Both Sweet Tooth and Bubble are amazing. 10/10. They are on Netflix if anyone is interested~

hi ! i realized i had some more tips for stylization that i forgot abt until now so i figured i'd send u an ask :

1. using references and exaggerating the shapes. this is kinda hard 2 explain w/o a visual but i'll try my best lol.

yknow how cartoon men will have very triangle shaped bodies w/ wide shoulders and small hips and the women have very hourglass bodies?? i mean kinda like that. it takes a lot of trial and error to perfect this sorta thing, but its really all about finding the shapes u like. and it doesnt always have 2 make perfect anatomical sense, as long as it Looks like it does lol. i like to exaggerate the elbows (making them more prominent and pointy? ig?) and the shoulders, as well as facial features like eye bags and the sides of the nose (i really dont know how 2 explain that w/o a visual, soz)

i also dont just mean w bodies w this technique(?). practicing using exaggerated shapes w things like animals or inanimate objects is great if u dont wanna just jump straight in2 bodies (cuz , at least 4 me, thats kinda scary lol)

i also have a pinterest board full of references if u wanna look at that. i dont think theres much inanimate objects tho .. i should probably work on that myself lol

2. if u want a more painterly-esc style/style w/o lineart (smth like these > )

mix hard and soft edges when rendering. if u look , the undereyes and the shadow under the lips as well as the sides of the nose all have hard edges, where as other places have more softer and blended out edges. a tip i learned from an art yter is "wherever u would put a line in a sketch or lineart, put a hard edge." an example of that would b the jawline or smth like that.

also ! i dont knkw what art program u use for digital art (if u do that idk) but i use procreate and i used the medium hard blend brush (in the airbrushing section) for those ^ up there but i changed the shape to the 'brick' shape which u can find in the 'source library' option when u click 'import' on the shape editor. and for the recent byler art, i use the 'gesinski ink' brush (that i edited 2 have min opacity set 2 max in 'brush properties') for sketching + lining + for most of the colouring (w/ the skin i added blush w the medium hard blend brush i mentioned b4, the freckles w the 'driven snow' brush on super low opacity and the 'derwent' brush for body hair) if thats smth u wanted 2 know?

Hi🤗! Thank u so much for taking the time to answer me TWICE🥺!!! The hard edge - sketch line thing is actually so eye opening😳! When going for a more realistic style digitally (i use Krita btw! But thank u for the brush names bc im thinking of getting an ipad one day even just for Goodnotes😭) i always kinda winged when to blend and when to leave a harsh or harsher line, this helps a lot! Toon Boom Animation Test

Here is a rotoscoping test done in toon boom using some of the footage i got on new years eve. I left the audio in for effect just to show what it would possibly be like. This 4 seconds took about 3 hours in total to do, but that is after not using toon boom for a number of months and then taking colours for the colour palettes from the original video and then going in. i also spent some time looking for any brushes i could find and download for toon boom but i found out that because they are textured vector brushes theyre are different to moth other drawing platforms and the easiest way i would get around this would be making my own brushes in procreate, which i cannot be bothered to do.

For the submission i need to make a an animatic type video with the audio i have compiled together so i am working on that aswell. I just wanted to hop into toon boom just to make sure my entire plan wouldnt be wasted.

I feel like this style will be very effective and using a black background works well because then i only paint on the parts where the light touches in the video, This is inspired by the painted on film technique that i included insome of the inspiration videos included in previous posts. I didint leave the live footage in the background of this because it takes away from the emerging of the man into the frame. I think i want to take some inspiration from Em Cooper in the way my videos get blended together the the possible use of using some of the live footage in it aswell. I plan to do another animation test where i intend to keep the live footage in it in the style of Cooper but also to see what straight up 'painted on film' type effect.

The only problem i have with toon boom was the bush i was using was irritating me because when i wanted a smooth like it sort of looked like i had dragged a marker down the page and it went | | | || || if you know what i mean. i had already done a few frames by then so i didint want to go back and re do it all so i went with it and its not massively noticeable at the end.

timings wise, i know it took me 3 hours to do 4 seconds but i se tthe stage as 24fps and am animating on 3s, pretty much the same as how i did it during my internship, this means each frame i draw is exposed for 3 frames before moving onto the rest, This means i dont have to draw at 24fps and i can switch to every 2 frames during the faster movements, such as when the torch somes nearer the camera, i used the reference footage to help me decide when the next drawn frame would be so there wasnt too big of a gap inbetween them and the movement stayed looking fluid. in regards to the fire... I love it! i actually really like how it turned out and rotoscoping fire is definitely the way to go when it comes to makeing it look real. When it comes ot the actual animation i plan to use a few more colours on the costumes of any people i animate but as it goes i will have to just take colours from the scenes, and i dont mind how the camera movement looked in this test either but if the camera is more unsteady i may have to stablise it in after effects before going in and rotoscoping, overall i am very happy with this animation test and the outcome.

ok that ask you answered earlier about the toonkind dnd stuff sent me down a rabbit hole and I'm kind of obsessed with the rubber hose cartoon style right now haha. would you happen to have any recommendations for media or artists that use that style? 👀

also if u don't mind would you wanna talk a little bit about how you got into that style for Lucky Jack, or maybe how you learned to use the style? I kinda wandered through your tags and a lot of the art you have for that character/story is really fun.

So! The big ones to look at would be Fleischer studios and old Disney, where the style originated from (approximately 1930s).

Out of recent examples though, the best one to look at is probably Cuphead!

The bosses all have a nice variety of shapes and motifs- just to show that there's more than just the "Main Character Default Shape"

Another nice example of "modern" rubberhose is the mickey mouse shorts! You can find those on youtube.

Theres a guy on twitter who makes really neat rubberhose loop animations but i cannot for the life of me recall his url.

Honorable mention to Felix Colgrave who has some rubberhose inspiration in his art and animation!! I wouldn't call it straight up rubberhose but its still really neat. (go check out DOUBLE KING on youtube! warning for blood and violence and. general weirdness)

Now, about Jack:

I made pretty much the moment I heard abt toonkind, ahah. I've always found rubberhose to be really charming.

Jack is quite a bit more streamlined towards my own style- he's often got more somewhat more defined elbows and knees in the bent position and a more slim body than classic rubberhose. (not to mention I keep forgetting to give him pie-cut eyes). He lacks some of the roundness/squishyness that old rubberhose has, i think?

When designing him, I didn't really do a whooooole lotta active research on rubberhose. It was more like I picked up bits and pieces from media I'd seen before for him.

I'm not sure how to describe "using" the style- I guess the best advice i can think of is to think of is as a collection of simple shapes? A sphere on top of a cylinder with a bunch of tubes stuck to it for limbs.

I do find that posing is just as important as design though.

For that, animation and storyboarding tips are also really helpful to look at. Squash and Stretch being the biggest one I can think of rn. Even if you don't plan to do a Straight Up Animation I think it's pretty helpful to know for drawing action.

Something random: I told a few friends about this already. but. I can't get past it, so you'll hear about it too. So for one of my classes, I had to reread The Hobbit this week. not really art related but art related, how did you go about developing your style? im a returned artist starting w fundamentals bc I never like did structured learning for art and tho I had an art style as a kid im always confused about people go about implementing concepts of other peopls that they admire styles into their own art? Most of my art style, I believe, relies on exaggeration, linework, and gestures.

I found inspiration in exaggeration a couple years back in cartoons such as Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Paranorman, and Motorcity. My art during 2012 was very silly because I wanted to be as expressive as these shows. This was during my rejecting-anime stage, ha! I don’t have this sort of style anymore, having toned it down and accepting that my style is a mix of anime, cartoon, and superhero comics. Without experimenting with this style, however, I don’t think my style would be less expressive.

When it comes to linework, a lot of the style was formed by drawing in pen, and my inability to draw curves. I used to (and sometimes still do) draw in my sketchbook only with a pen, forcing me to make sure that every mark I make is deliberate and focused. The more I do it, the easier it is to recreate those lines from muscle memory (such as the slope of a person’s neck, depending on if they’re skinny, fat, or muscled).

My lines are quick and straight because of my shaky hands, lol. If I don’t move quickly, everything will be so squiggly.

Gestures mostly come from observation. I don’t draw fight scenes, but if I were to draw a kick, I would know how low and wide the initial stance would look because I understood why they were the way they were. Also I act things out… because if I was to draw someone looking like they want to be loved, well. I could just use myself as a reference.

When it comes to taking elements from art I like, I break down what I want from others’ styles by not just mimicking them, but understanding how and why whatever element works.
