if youre up to it could you maybe write little rain struggling to use her crutches? maybes shes mentally struggling because shes afraid shes going to get judge for using them but she gets comforted by the others explaining to her that its okay and actually really good for her to use them

hi, absolutely! in general i think that both big and small rain can use crutches well and has no physical or mental issues with this but there must've been a start, right? so here it is, i hope you like it!

The package got here not even 15 minutes ago but Rain has already slipped. She did while opening the big box, anxiety sending her down. It took months to even bring the ghoul to make the purchase and now that it got here… it was not going too well.

The crutches weren’t ugly, or anything. Quite the opposite, actually, Swiss and Zephyr, the latter being an expert in the field, helped Rain find some that didn’t look so… medical. He ordered two pairs, black and purple, and now they laid there on Rain’s desk as she stared at them with tears in her big eyes.

She was so scared. What if she became even clumsier with them? What if she’d need even more help from others? She’d certainly end up being a huge burden. What if they’d judge her? Maybe she was pretending? Yeah, she definitely didn’t need them, it wasn’t that bad, really, it–

“Rainbow?” Rain flinched hearing Swiss’ voice as he entered her room. She forgot to lock the door again, and now he would laugh at her and– “Hey, hey, Guppy, what’s wrong?”

“Swissy, ‘s ogay, go away,” she mumbled, now fully sobbing, as she curled in on herself.”

“Guppy, I can see it’s not okay,” Swiss sighed. “Can I sit next to you?”

Rain nodded shakily.

“What’s the- ah.” The multi ghoul noticed the crutches when he sat down, linking Rain’s little breakdown to them. “Overwhelmed you a bit, didn’t they?”

Another whimper, followed by a nod, “Scawry.”

“Oh, I bet it is,” Swiss chuckled. “Would you like a hug?”

Instead of answering verbally Rain threw herself at Swiss, hiding her teary face in the multi ghoul’s chest. He kicked up his body temperature a notch and wrapped his arms around her, whispering quiet reassurances. After a while, Rain’s breathing calmed down and her tears slowed. Only then Swiss spoke again, “Do you wanna tell me what’s so scary about them, Guppy?”

“‘s… ‘s jus’ dat I don’ wanna need helb,” Rain muttered into Swiss’ chest.

“You don’t wanna need help from those things or from us?”

“You, b’casue i’s annoyin’ and ‘m already a lot an–” she babbled, tears returning now that she voiced her bad thoughts.

“Hey, hey, none of that, baby!” Swiss chuckled, squeezing Rain a bit more. “You are not annoying and not a burden, never. We love you, all of us, always, and we love taking care of you. Do you think Ifrit minds having to warm up Zeph so often? Or that Mountain has a problem with having to create his weird special teas for them?”

“N– no… they love Zepf,” Rain admitted.

“Exactly! And we love you, so I don’t see anyyy problems.”

“B- but–”

“No buts, Guppy,” Swiss stopped her again. It was overwhelming, he understood that, but this was a topic for a conversation with big Rain. This little creature, that Swiss had currently a lapful of, needed to just be taken out of her head. “Anyway, I’ve got an idea.”

Rain hummed in question. “You’ve got those purple ones for when you’re little—I love that color by the way—but I still think it’s a bit too boring for you. What do you say about stickers?”

“Stickers?” she perked up. She loved stickers!

“Yeah! We can get you some fishy stickers, wouldn’t you like that?”

“Yes, Swissy, please! Can we… c’n we get a shark?” Rain brightened up now, her eyes still wet but not as sad as moments before.

“Of course we can! Lemme get my phone, we’ll look for some right away,” Swiss giggled, patting around for the device. Once he got it he settled by the headboard with Rain in his lap and they looked up different online stores with a variety of stickers of all kinds. Rain was excited now, wanted to get her hand on them and stick them on her new crutches, even if they still scared her a bit. But they would definitely be less scary all covered in fish.

“Surely, you don’t think I asked for this,” he says coming into the office to find Beth sitting on that gorgeous desk of his. He’s referring to the dress, of that, she’s sure. Designer because of course it is, black and white and form-fitting, the bow drawing the eye to her hip. Her hair is up, precisely pinned, her make up evening-dramatic like she never typically wears. Long legs ending in even longer Louboutin stiletto heels. To almost anyone else every last bit of her and the way she’s posed herself, she’d be devoured. But Larry isn’t anyone else. If anything, he’s the only person she knows less interested in carnality of that sort than she is and maybe that’s why she’s drawn to him. Why she wants to see how close to his fire she can dance before becoming immolated in his currently restrained and murderous fury. “Believe me, Lawrence, if I believe you evah had dat kind of want f’ me? I’d flay ya alive an’ dat’s before wha’evah my braddah would do to you for da insult.” Larry is new money. He’d probably say self made. He’s a businessman even if that business is questionable, and where she comes into play? Andy would see him as a beggar-peasant. And he’d be utterly appalled to know that she only encourages Larry to do his worst, waiting for him to show a single sign of weakness. He teases her with his desire for power, the kind that shouldn’t be possible but is. Slowly she re-crosses her legs and holds up a cut-crystal tumbler. The deep red of her lipstick mars its perfect rim and she watches with narrowed eyes as he takes it from her, sipping at it from the opposite side. He smells good. The cologne is subtle, just a faint whiff of sandalwood, cedar. Calabrian bergamot. Something a little sweeter on the base. Expensive. He was out for blood tonight, but like Scrooge, he finds himself in his office on Christmas Eve. Makes her wonder which ghost she’s supposed to be. Empty hand lays on his lapel. Glides upwards past his collar until she touches skin. She can all but feel his crawl from the contact but he doesn’t so much as flinch. Good boy, he’s learning. “Firs’ reason I’m here, is a lump of coal. You been a bad bunny, Lawrence. I warned you away from dat land deal for a reason an’ I know you’ve upped ya bid. Since carrot no work, gonna hafta be da stick.” Her razor sharp nails rake across the side of his neck, drawing a faint line of deep crimson. Viper-strike his empty hand lashes out and takes a hold of her wrist before she can like the tips clean of his viscera. She can hear the crack of bone beneath his white knuckled grip and rewards him with the first gasp of blistering pain. She tries to smile through it as he wrenches her arm to the side and hauls her off his desk. A moment later that warm edge presses into the space between her ribs and her belly, the arm high up at the spine. He stops just short of dislocating it. However he leans down over her, his lips right at the edge of her ear as he spits out his words. “What. Did. You. Do.” “Oh, no, bunny. S’what I’m gonna do. See….” She hisses as he gains fractions of centimetres. “Every day ya don’...ya don’...wi’draw ya bid…ya gonna be wrack by more pain dan ya evah felt. Crippling, mind-destroyin’ pain. In a week, ya heart gonna give, an’ den I’m gonna hafta find new custos. An’ I no can change it now, spell already been cast.” “You little-” “Yeah, like I nevah heah dat one before. Now, ya want ya present, or you gonna make good on ya advantage an’ finally gimme mine?”

This was a request from @theitcaramelchick where daddy Spencer ends up caving into his little girl when she begs to adopt a cat. I was melting a bit while writing it, just be warned. I love me some daddy Spencer. Happy reading!

Spencer lived for his daddy-daughter dates with his little girl, Willow.

She had asked to get ice cream, so getting her ice cream is what he did. She was happily eating her cone of mint chocolate chip but getting it more on her face than actually in her mouth.

“You love mint chocolate chip ice cream like your daddy, don’t you?” he smiled.

“Mhm,” she nodded big, taking another bite.

“Your face is a mess,” he chuckled, not bothering to wipe it just yet.

“Oops,” she giggled.

They’d been to the library previously, for her to pick out a book or two to have for the week. He was big on making sure his little girl was exposed to books and reading. So far, she loved having stories read to her, even pretending to read them herself. He couldn’t wait until she started reading on her own.

She kicked her legs happily as she sat in the chair, enjoying her ice cream.

“Daddy?”

“Yes baby?”

“Where’s your ice cweam?”

“I ate mine already,” he answered.

“Oh.”

“I ate mine without making a mess like you are, Princess,” he chuckled, tickling her side a bit.

She squealed and squirmed from his touch.

He grinned, taking her in. Sometimes he still couldn’t believe how big she’d gotten recently. She was no longer his little baby girl, but a growing girl with a mind of her own and stubbornness to rival her mother’s.

Today she was dressed in a periwinkle, sleeveless romper with a bright and colorful fruity pattern on it. Ruffles along the edges from the shoulder to the waist of the romper and little pink striped decorated pockets completed the adorable outfit.

Y/N had put Willow’s light brown wavy curls in pigtails this morning, but by now they were starting to look disheveled with strands of her hair falling in her face from all the running and playing she’d been doing.

He reached over to push a strand of hair out of her face and she looked at him with the same hazel eyes as his and gave him a big smile.

Y/N often said that Willow had gotten his own huge, heartwarming smile and in that moment he had to admit he could see what she meant.

“How in the world do you have ice cream on your nose?” he laughed.

“I don know,” she shrugged honestly, causing him to chuckle more.

“You’re a mess munchkin.”

He kissed her head and waited until she finished her cone then wiped her entire face with a baby wipe from his backpack.

“Your mommy will kill me if she finds out I let you have ice cream this close to dinner.”

“Our secwet,” she beamed holding out her pinkie.

Spencer smiled, hooking his much larger pinkie around hers.

“You finished?”

“Ya,” she nodded, trying to climb out of the chair.

He picked her up, holding her with one arm and grabbed their trash in the other, walking to deposit it in the trash can.

When the two were out of the ice cream parlor, he set her down on the sidewalk and took her hand.

“Daddy?”

“Mhm?”

“When brudder be hewe?”

Spencer smiled, thinking of Y/N who was currently 22 weeks with their little boy.

“In about four months,” he answered.

“How long dat?” Willow asked, looking up at him confused.

“Still a little while longer, lady bug. He’s got to grow big and strong before he can leave mommy’s belly.”

“Well I want to see him,” she pouted.

Spencer chuckled. Willow was definitely something else alright.

Suddenly, Willow was practically pulling him to a stop. To be so tiny, she sure had quite the strength against him.

“Daddy look at the da doggies and kitties! Can we go look?”

“Not today, sweetie.”

Spencer knew good and well that if he let Willow in the shelter it would take all his energy to pull her away when it was time to go. He loved that about his little girl though. She loved animals so much and had such a huge heart that was ever expanding to include more people and more animals.

“Pwease, pwease, pwease?”

She pouted up at him before wrapping her arms around his leg, attaching herself to it.

He didn’t miss the amused glances and smiles from the passing strangers. It must be quite the sight to see this tiny girl quite literally clinging to his leg, as adorable as it was.

“Okay, okay. We can go in,” Spencer gave in.

It was hard to say no to her, much to Y/N’s dismay. But she too, experienced the same difficulties sometimes. Willow was for the most part, a well behaved little girl, so it wasn’t a big deal to spoil her a little here and there.

He bent down and unattached her from his leg, holding her in his arms.

“But we can’t stay long, alright? Mommy will be home from her doctor’s appointment soon and will want help with dinner. Deal?”

“Deal,” Willow nodded seriously.

They were welcomed warmly upon their entering and were told to feel free to walk around and interact with the animals. Willow was instantly in heaven.

“Hi dere,” she waved to one dog in a pen nearest to her.

The big German Shepherd came over, sniffing her hand briefly before licking it, causing Willow to giggle.

“Daddy it kiss me,” she beamed at Spencer.

“I see,” he chuckled, rubbing the friendly canine under his jaw.

Willow’s hand reached out between the pen bars, patting the snout of his nose. The dog gave a happy little bark, pleasing Willow.

“Bye bye doggie,” she waved again as they moved on to more residents.

Willow being her normal self had to stop at every pen she crossed, talking and playing with every animal in her path.

She giggled and patted the heads of a pen of puppies, squealed with delight when a kitten nuzzled against her hand and grinned from ear to ear when she got to pet a bunny. It even allowed her to kiss it on the nose. She got a little lick kiss back from the bunny making her scrunch her nose, claiming it tickled.

But Spencer knew he was in trouble when they came across one pen where a black and white fluffy cat laid. It peered at him and Willow curiously, but made no effort to get up to check out these new visitors.

“I wanna pet it,” she pouted, unable to reach her small arm far enough through the bars to the cat.

“This little guy is a new rescue,” one of the workers said, coming up to them, “He’s very hesitant to new people. In fact, he still hasn’t quite warmed up to anyone else. Would you like to go in and give him a treat though, honey?”

“Can I daddy?”

The young girl’s hopeful eyes looked up at Spencer.

“I don’t see why not,” he smiled.

“Just give me a second,” the worker replied before stepping away to fetch the treat.

A minute or so later, she returned with a treat in her hand and a key to unlock the pen.

“Just be gentle, okay sweetheart?” she told Willow.

Willow nodded seriously, walking into the pen.

“Here mista kitty. I have tweat. I pwomise not to bite.”

She sat down a bit further away from him than Spencer expected. He thought she would go in eager to pet the cat and startle or frighten it, but she was surprisingly gentle and patient with it.

He could see it had black ears and a ring of black around the center of its face. The outer edge of the cat’s face was white fluff. Its striking blue eyes were the most memorable part of it though.

“What breed is he?” Spencer asked, still watching Willow.

“We think he’s a Himalayan. It’s basically a mix of a Persian and a Siamese cat,” the worker answered.

He nodded, even though he didn’t have quite as much knowledge on cat breeds as he did statistics or serial killers.

Spencer was shocked to see movement from the cat. He had been sitting so silently, studying Willow, he was sure the cat had no interest in her. But slowly he stood, walking over to her.

It sniffed the treat in her outstretched palm before taking a small nibble.

“Can I pet you?” Willow asked sweetly.

Ever so gently, her hand rested on his back, stroking it softly.

Spencer was always so surprised to see just how smart and compassionate she was, even to be such a young girl. Y/N would definitely say that she got all her heart from him, but Spencer liked to think she got a double dose from both of them resulting in her sweet nature.

“He’s so fluffy,” she giggled.

“He is,” Spencer nodded, imagining the mess of shedding this cat would cause.

She continued to pet him gently as he ate the treat out of her hand.

Spencer didn’t know what it was, but something had made the feline trust his little girl and frankly he couldn’t be more proud of her.

“What’s his name?”

She tilted her face up at the woman, a questioning look on her face.

“Well, he doesn’t have a name yet. We were hoping he would be adopted soon and his new family could name him whatever they wanted.”

It was at that moment that the cat decided to climb into her lap and curl up. The look on Willow’s face said it all.

She was totally in love.

“Can we keep him? Pwease?”

He opened his mouth to protest, but when he saw the pleading look on her face combined with how at peace the cat looked, he knew he couldn’t say no. The cat had taken to Willow just as much as she’d taken to him.

“I guess we’re getting a cat.”

You had just gotten home from your latest check up and were walking in the door, when you spotted something out of the ordinary.

You were happy to know that baby boy was doing great and growing just as he should be. You couldn’t wait to be reunited with your boyfriend and little girl. It might just be the pregnancy hormones, but you always found yourself longing to be with the two of them, missing them so much even when you were only away for an hour or two, like today. It was like bad separation anxiety mixed with a need to constantly cuddle. Your happy place truly was with your little family and you just couldn’t get enough time with them.

You had set your keys on the counter and was getting ready to go look for Spencer and Willow, figuring they were home since you’d seen his car parked in the driveway.

You cut through the kitchen, heading towards the stairs, when something in your peripheral made you stop.

There was an open doorway from the kitchen into your living room, so you could see into the room. It always came in handy when keeping an eye on Willow playing when you were fixing dinner or cleaning.

What stopped you was a round ball of fluff in black and white, curled up on your couch.

“Spencer! Reid!” you hollered.

Moments after your yell, came the sound of your daughter’s feet on the stairs, her excited voice in competition.

“Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!”

She came barreling towards you when she’d descended the stairs, wrapping her arms around you, but more or less hugging your growing stomach.

“Hi baby,” you leaned down to pick her up.

She was definitely not a baby anymore. Picking up a toddler while five and a half months pregnant wasn’t ideal anymore.

Spencer soon followed her down the steps. You knew better than anyone that it was difficult to keep up with a three year old’s energy.

“Mommy we got a cat!”

“I see that,” you grinned tightly at her, shooting daggers with your eyes at Spencer.

“Uh honey why don’t you go keep him company, okay?” Spencer said.

“Okay!”

She wiggled in your arms until you set her down then ran into the living room.

“Before you get mad-” Spencer started.

“Spencer there’s a ball of fluff sleeping on my couch,” you said.

“Yes, I realize that.”

“A cat though, really? Look how furry it is! I’m gonna be cleaning fur up from everywhere.”

“I promise I have a good reason,” he answered sheepishly, “Willow wanted to visit a shelter that we passed by today after we went out for ice cream, so I thought it couldn’t hurt.”

You raised an eyebrow, curious to hear the rest. You weren’t mad, just a little bit aggravated that he hadn’t consulted you before bringing home a pet.

“Of course, you know her. She had to say hello and stop and visit with all the animals,” he rubbed the back of his neck before he continued, “Well she got to his pen and one of the shelter staff said that he was a rescue that seemed really wary of people and he hadn’t opened up to anyone yet.”

You had a feeling you knew where this was going.

“The lady asked if she wanted to give him a treat and of course she did. So she walks in and I’m thinking she’s gonna terrorize the poor thing just because she wants to pet him. But she didn’t. She just sat patiently a little ways away from him and let him come to her, which he eventually did. He sniffed her, ate the treat and let her pet him before he nuzzled her and curled up in her lap. How could I say no to her begging to keep him?”

You smiled, your heart warming at how gentle of a soul your little girl was. Spencer had a point. You knew you would’ve had a hard time saying no to her too, especially since he had seemed to warm up to Willow.

“He’s actually a really sweet cat. He let me pet him too. Also, the woman said he should be little trouble because he’s a very laid back breed that is known for loving kids and being good for children. He’s a total family cat, if that helps.”

“Alright, I can’t blame you. You’re just too wrapped around her little finger,” you chuckled, wrapping your arms around his neck, kissing his nose.

“That I am,” he smiled, a gentle kiss on your lips following.

“Well, I guess we’ll just be a family of five now,” you smiled.

“Speaking of,” he grinned, pulling back from your embrace enough to splay his hands across your belly, “How is my little Jay?”

“Growing like a weed, just like he should be.”

Ever since finding out the two of you were having a boy, the decision of a name was definitely a hot topic between you and Spencer. He wanted to name him Carl after Carl Sagan, which you up and refused.

But finally a name did come together with a few tweaks here and a little compromising there.

Little Jason Carl Reid—to be called Jay—, was named after the first mentor Spencer had in his early years in the BAU and of course, Carl Sagan. Little Jay was going to be the fourth member of your family, but now it seemed like he would be the fifth.

“I know you’re not thrilled about this, but I promise I’ll make it up to you. Anything you want.”

He wrapped his arms around you, pulling you close.

“Ooh, anything I want? Would you still make it up to me even if I said I don’t mind the cat?”

You smirked suggestively, causing him to chuckle.

“Yes, yes I would. The pregnant woman always wins, I don’t make the rules.”

You grinned, going in for another kiss when your daughter’s squeals interrupted you.

“Mommy, look! Biscuit loves me!”

You and Spencer looked over to see Biscuit laying completely flat beside Willow on the couch. You had to admit, he did look pretty content.

“Biscuit?” you asked, shooting an amused glance in Spencer’s direction, wondering why on earth he’d let your three year old name the cat.

“Just glad we didn’t go with her first suggestion,” he deadpanned.

“Which was?”

“Sir Snuggleton.”

I made a fic where lifeline fixes revenant. I like them together.

Heavy metalic footsteps echoed throughout the corridor. One step slightly becoming louder than the previous.

He was mad. Fuming even. He didn’t like asking for help much, especially anyone from here. He didn’t really care about the other legends much less the supposed mechanic- er closest to a mechanic At least.

A low growl escaped the robot's lips, his hip stuck out at an unnatural angle. Each time he lifted his right leg he wanted to rip it clean off, the high pitched squeak filled his ears and it was getting quite annoying.

He groaned again, ‘fucking great’ he thought.

The games were done for the day so that meant he didn’t have to rush this.

He rolled his eyes, or the bright orbs that would’ve been his eyes. This wouldn't have happened if that dumbass skinbag didn't decide to strike a piece of glass into his right hip. Fucker, they'll pay next game.

What was her name? Bangalore? Bagboar?

Whatever it was, it didn't matter. For sure; next time, she's his first victim. He chuckled deeply, just thinking about what poor skinsuits are pitiful enough to be at the mercy of his hands, got him riled for next time.

That damned whine returned, his thoughts back at hand.

Getting repaired

Grimacing, he stopped his tracks. He's arrived. The one who has close experience with robots. Looking to a slight right, he read the nameplate.

Ajay Che (combat medic)

”Wouldn't call that little pet a robot.” he grumbled.

Huffing, he had second thoughts about this. Glancing to his right hip again, and back to the name planchette. This could slow him down, this needed to be taken care of.

Cursing under his breath, he knocked. Well more like banged. Nothing. Nothing was happening. No response. No sounds coming From inside. Nothing.

He crossed his arms and huffed heavily, it was taking all of him not to just go back to his room. This situation needed to be resolved and if she couldn't help him he'd make her. Still, there he stood In silence until three loud shuffles were heard from inside.

“A’right, a’right. Hol’ on.” Her voice was loud but breathless.

He froze, he didn’t really associate with the other legends much less Ajay. He did not want to talk. At all.

The automatic metal doors slid open, revealing a tired and worn out looking medic.

“Ain’t dis a surprise, what you doin ere?”

He briskly walked inside, ignoring her question. Scanning the room, in the middle he saw a metallic table and a few spare robot parts for her drone.

“Dats a bit rude to jus come in ‘ere like you own da place.”

Shoulders tense, he turns around. He doesn’t know how to respond. How does a conversation like this work? He didn’t like socializing and this was hard as is. Someone else touching this robotic fucking monster of a body. That’s a fucking NO. He already had a hard time accepting this fucking form.

Ajay stared, her eyes full of curiosity. ”Well?”

He was getting angry, the words didn't seem to form out his mouth. Was it not obvious? Did he really need to say more? Just fucking looking at his hip and you'll see why he came here.

She knew and he knew that she knew. So why? Why does she still ask?

”If yah come ere’ to stand and stare den leave I don have time to chat.” she rubbed her temples.

She did look tired But he didn't care. Pointing to the right hip and back to the table.

“F-fix.” He grumbled.

She raised a brow as if challenging him to say more. She hummed. Still looking at him, She wants him to say more.

‘He said fix, why does she still stare at him dumbfounded.’

Her arms crossed, she lets out a tired sigh. “I don have time for dis...chu want sometin ask nicely.”

Knuckles cracking, he let out a feral growl. ”fix. Or else.”

Her face contorted into annoyance. ”look you won't be gettin fixed...yah hear.” She pointed to the door, Getting up close and personal to his face. She demanded. ”Play nice or get out.”

The crimson-plated robot shook with anger. This was not going well and the atmosphere in the room was suffocating. He didn't like her attitude even when she wasn't sassy. A happy go lucky, rich spoon-fed kid who grew up with luxury needed to be put in place.

He didn't care and he didn't fucking like her. Period. This girl, she’s testing him. This ship had a respawn beacon anyways wouldn’t make a difference if she magically disappeared. She acts like she isn’t afraid of death. She’s odd. Something about her pricked his interest but he shoves it away.

Why wasn't she afraid? Why is she provoking him? Obviously, things would just go smoothly if she just did what he asked.

He backed away, he needed this to be done. If this wasn’t resolved then it’s gonna fuck with his performance and If it fucks with his performance then oh boy. He’s gonna fucking throw a fit.

Looking at her eyes, they’re filled with annoyance and tiredness. Her brown eyes dark, making her eye-bags pop out more.

He huffed out his nose. “Fix me.”

He saw her grit her teeth. She opened her mouth. “You-“

He interrupted “Please.”

It took all of him not to shout at her, to force her to fix him. She was a toughy. Something new?

She backed away, briskly making her way to the table. Grabbing the tools on her way, she turned and gestured him to come closer.

He followed suit, wanting no needing for this to be over. He propped himself up on the table.

Having a cocky grin she asked, ”Where?”

Throwing him off, he stared. How dumb can she be???

lip quivering. He simply jutted his hip out and made a simple ”hmmph.”

Rolling her eyes, her arms wrap around his waist to bring him closer.

Surprised, he shouted. ” Be gentle or I’ll fucking kill you!” His Hand twisting into a pointy makeshift knife.

”Yah kill me, yah won't be fixed. Sorry for triggering sometin.” she whispered.

After pulling him closer she rested her hands on his lap, reaching her hand softly onto the left hip to ground the crimson robot. He winced.

He’s always been sensitive, especially near his hips. That’s just how his wires feel. Sensitive. It’s worse since they’re usually exposed. The sad excuse of a shawl covered the majority but not the sides. It’s crazy how Hammond designed his model. Crazy how even then, even after dying. He can still feel things. Not like he messed with anything there anyways.

“Sorry...”

He grumbled, annoyed with the whole situation he didn’t want to put up a fight.

She chuckled softly, “I see Anita dit a numba on yah hip.”

“Hmph.”

He wasn’t going to engage in conversation as she wanted. She got enough of cooperation from him.

“I notice, yah know.”

This piqued his interest. “Mmh?”

“I notice yah, yah don like talkin to us.”

He weakly shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t care enough to.” His voice was almost nothing.

Her hands wrapped around the shard of glass, swishing it slowly back and forth.

The murder robots hands gripped the table underneath him. Letting out a shaky breath he whimpered, “Be more careful...”

The shard was a long one and it came out rather easily. The matter was his wires were pulled out as well. Clicking her tongue she grabbed a screwdriver and pried the small space just a little more open.

He wanted to run out of this room right now. He wanted to close his legs. He wanted nothing more to do with this. This stupid sickening feeling, dumb stupid retarded Ajay. “Wa-wait..”

She didn’t hear him. Or did she. Point is his message didn’t cross. Her hands trailed up his exposed wires. Picking the shortest one, she rolled the tip whilst pinching the end to squeeze into place. Making him shudder, His hips jerked. His voice was static and breathless “Wait, I said wait...ho-hold on.”

She rolled her eyes for the umpteenth time today. “Look I know dis hurts but I’m workin as fast as I can.”

Ignoring his pleas she continued with putting his wires back in place.

His right hand gripped her uniform, she didn’t mind or she just didn’t care at this point.

His body trembled with each touch of her fingertips. “Haa...”

Her fingers made their way to the second thickest wire, this one was much more troublesome to get into the right place. Slightly twisting the dark gray wire, she tugged it into place. Next to it, a smaller sized green one stood out, pinching this one just like the first. It found its way into proper standing.

His grip had become increasingly tighter, desperately trying not to roll his hips into her hand. He refused to be like...this. Taking a deep breath he steadied himself.

“Dis is de last wire.” She mumbled.

The last one was...difficult to say the least. Located closest to his pelvic area, she knew she had to be gentle. Sure he may be a robot but it’s courtesy to still treat him with respect.

“Uhm.” He mumbled. “This is the last one right?”

“Jus Said id was.”

If he still had a real working body, his face would’ve been red and his heart would’ve been a Jackhammer. If it was even possible he missed having a heart, missed hearing how it drowned out his hearing when it bumped, missed having it beat when a lover of his said they loved him. He didn’t want to feel this anymore. So small and shy.

Ajay couldn’t pinch this wire, this one was way much thicker than the rest. She had to be more gentle. If it hurt him this much then it was better safe then sorry. (Little does she know. ) She found where it was originally stored rather quickly, stroking the wire, she increased her hold on it.

Revenant let out a high pitched wheeze, his hips rolling into her hand. His legs tightened around her waist.

”wha- what are ya doing?” She stammered, clearly confused.

This was so fucking embarrassing he wanted to fucking die. More than he already wished. “I- you- I said-“

She groaned, “I’m workin as fast as I can. We’re both tired I know but cha gotta work with me, Rev.”

A shiver ran up his would be spine caused him to falter. “Rev?”

“My bad broter. Thought since I’m doin yah a favor I could give cha a nickname..”

“I don’t care and I don’t like it, just finish.” He replied, looking away.

“I would if yah let me go witcha legs.” She snickered.

He jumped, slowly letting go of her. Her hand down back at his right hip, stretching him back out. He leaned back on the metal table with his palms carrying most of his weight.

This felt weirdly intimate, and he didn’t like it. Another shiver went up to his makeshift of a spine. Twisting the darkest wire back into place, she had to squeeze the middle area for it to fit. This time, he couldn’t hold it back. He let out a shuddered breath, Lidded luminescent eyes now found their way closed, hips slowly rolling once again.

Ajay looked up, with a quizzical look on her face. She didn’t bother questioning it but she still wanted to test something.

She squeezed harder and he let out a small mewl. The tips of her fingers found their way traveling ever so delicately down to the thickest part of the wire. Her thumb circling around the base, she felt the failed suppressed shudder throughout his body.

he breathed, “Fuck...”

She hummed, she put the wire back In place but she still wanted to play with him. Hands wrapped on his waist she began feeling his back indents. His panting was audible now. Pressing inwards of one of the indents. His voicebox crackled, letting out a cute “mmph.”

He slowly moved back, letting her climb on semi top of him. His hips rutting against her leg, he was really needy. Whimpering and begging practically. She smirked.

Figured as much, he’s been alive for almost 3 centuries. Nobody to touch him, nobody to make him feel good. She almost pitied him.

“P-please let me.”

Ajay hummed.

Another voice crack, “Ajay-emmhp”

His rutting became more aggressive, more sloppy. He needed this. However, he did come into the room with an attitude. Can’t let that go through can we. Moving her leg back, she got off him.

“N-no..” his hips chased her leg. His eyes flicked to her.

“I fixed yah, chu can leave.” She moved to her desk.

“Wha- I ehm...” he really didn’t know how to respond. He didn’t want to be left feeling this way.

“Yah Heard me.” She snickered.

He covered his face with his arms, he couldn’t do this. He didn’t want to be the only one feeling this way.

His breath still irregular, his voice box struggled to make out coherent words. “i-“

“Yah don’t have tuh say anyting.” She interrupted.

He swallowed. Getting up from the table, he still looked at her.

His thoughts raced. ‘What should I do? I came to be fixed And I was. Why am I feeling this way? I don’t want to anymore.

Why is this happening? Why did that happen?why did I allow that?’

He awkwardly walked up to her desk where she sat. Turning her around, his eyes darted to look anywhere but her face.

Why’d I do this again? I want- I want her to touch me again..

“Hm?” She questioned.

He kissed her cheek and turned to walk out of her room, he heard her giggle. “I’ll see ya in the games, yah smhook.”

Stopping his tracks at the open door, he shouted. “STUPID SKINSUIT!”

“Fuck ya!” She burst out laughing.

He was down the hall when he heard her respond, he wanted to be back in his room. Nobody was going to stop him. Briskly making his way down the hallway. The crimson plated robot found his room on the right.

His back met his bed issued from the company. His Body still ached for her touch. Wanting more. Rolling back and forth like a toddler on the sheets. He shouted, “Stupid SKINSUIT!”

The Assistant / Chapter Twenty Seven, “Meet Me in the Hallway”

“Why’re you annoyed I said that? Is it ‘cause that’s what you want? Did I expose your secret fantasy? ‘Cause ya know you can still go and date him, maybe it’s even easier now that you don’t work for him anymore.”

“Robbie, stop.”

“I can keep a secret. Scout’s honor.”

“No, you can’t! You always say that and it’s never true. And you were never in Boy Scouts,” I scoff, holding onto tufts of his jean jacket.

“I was too! Now, stop avoiding the question. Why won’t you give Harry another chance?” Robbie continues, veering back to the topic I so conveniently changed.

“There’s nothing to talk about.”

“Hmmm, I don’t think I believe you, Ree,” Robbie tsks. “But I’m going to get the truth out of you one of these times.”

“I don’t know,” she replies, yanking at the corners of my heart. A sigh escapes my lips when I feel my heavy head fall into my hands. “M-my dad,” Becky continues, but her words collapse into tears before too long.

I almost tell her that I already know, but my lips stop just in time. I don’t want her to get mad at Asher. And if I’m honest, our secret elevator meetings to talk about her are the highlight of my week. But my lips search for something to say. The sound of her tears is all I can hear, no matter how badly I ache to take them away.

“He has c-cancer, Harry,” Becky says, her words tumbling out sloppily. They pull at my heart again, making it fall another notch.

“Fuuuuuuuuck . . . . ’m so sorry, Becks . . . . Are ya okay?”

“No, w-why would I be? How could I be?” she responds, her words falling out fast.

“Becks . . have ya been drinkin’, love?” I ask tentatively, wincing when I hear her groan.

“I don’t wanna ‘ear it. Imma grown woman. I can bloody drink if I want t’ and-,” she argues, her voice steely. I’m caught off guard by the confrontation, and it only makes me feel worse.

“Tha’s not what I meant, love. I jus’ . . . ,” I try, my train of thought fleeing me. All of my thoughts do, because I wasn’t expecting this. I don’t even know if I’d have any better idea of what to say if I’d had notice she was going to call. That she was going to remember who I was for the first time in 9 months. “Are ya atta pub? Cuz I jus’ wanna know yer safe. I can leave an’ give ya a lift home if ya need,” I finish, unsure of how she’ll take my words.

She’s quiet and it only makes the scary thoughts buzz louder in my head.

What if she gets the idea to drive herself home?

What if some drunk bloke bothers her and she can’t fend for herself?

What if she tries to walk home in the rainstorm?

What if she keeps drinking, not knowing when to stop?

What if-

“No, I’m at home. In me bed. I’m not st- dumb, Harry,” she slurs, showing me a side of her I’ve never seen. We’ve had drinks together before - in my office or rarely at a pub. But she never got drunk before.

“I don’ think ya are, bug,” I counter, the nickname falling effortlessly from my tongue. “’m really sorry ‘bout yer dad. D’ya know how bad it ‘s yet?”

“Noooo, other than that ’s somewhere . . . like in uh Stage 2 . . or somefiing,” Becky answers, her words all over the place. “It’s t-the prostate. Ya know that fing that uh . . . is . . where ‘s it ‘gain?” One of her many words that don’t make much sense.

“Ya I know what it ‘s an’ where. I uh have one of ‘em,” I finish for her. I’m rewarded by hearing her decadent laugh. A sound I’ve craved and missed for so long. I missed it more than I thought I had, I realize as a smile pulls my cheeks upwards.

“Oh ya. I uh kinda forgot ‘bout dat,” she titters, encouraging a chuckle from my now smiling lips.

But her laugh fades first and mine follows. Because she didn’t call to laugh at my lame jokes, or to catch up on things we’ve missed in each other's lives. No, not really.

“He’d been ‘aving pains. So bad he can’t eat, or use the uh loo . . He told me when we was there wit’ Robbie and . . . . he looked baaad,” she tells me, her voice catching on the last word. I feel my heart shudder in pain again, and suddenly I realize the validity of the second-hand pain phenomenon. “And I jus’ dunno ‘ow I’m gonna do dis. I wanna help him and take care o’ him . . . But I’m t’ree hours ‘way and . . . I just dunno how t’ do dis.”

“There’s no real setta rules, love. No guideline or brochure fer how t’ handle it . . Ya jus’ gotta do yer best, an’ love him . . ‘m sorry,” I tell her, not knowing what else to say.

“You’re sorry?” she laughs, pulling my eyebrows into a knot. “Tha’s a firssssst.”

I listen to her laugh some more, savoring it. But I’m also confused and a little offended. But then it stops abruptly and I hear her sniffle. “I’m the one whoooo should be sorry,” she begins, tears lacing into her words. And taking all of mine with them. “You’re just trynaaaa help, and I’m bein’ mean and rude just like I always am to ya. Ughhhh, I dunno why I even called.”

“No, ‘s okay. Yer goin’ thru a lot an’ . . . I appreciate ya callin’. I jus’ hope ‘m helpin’,” I say quickly, dropping a hand in defeat. It finds its way to my pants and I pick at the loose thread that’s been bothering me all day.

“But I am, Harry! I’m mean and I make no sense a-and I’m jus’ loadin’ onto ya. But I dunno who else t’ call, cuz ’m tryna t’ be strong forrrrr Robbie. And not worry Skye, an’ I jus’ dunno what t’ do, Harry,” Becky says, the last of her words dissolving into sobs. Biting my lip at the sound of her crying into my ear, I keep biting and biting as she cries. I yank at the thread and feel it dig into my skin, but I don’t let go. “I don’t wanna lose me dad afta I already lost you.”

It takes a few seconds of telling myself, but I slowly release my bottom lip. I huff, swiping my tongue across my lips. I taste the metally blood coming from the stinging cut. And then the warm taste of salt joins it on my tongue. Pressing my lips together, the pain only intensifies. But I let it stay as tears roll down my cheek. My finger burns, but only for a few short seconds when I finally rip the thread from my pants. It doesn’t compare to the pain I feel inside of my chest, like a vice around my heart. Tightening and throbbing.

The line grows silent, but I know she’s there. Because I hear her shallow breathing, and the occasional sniffle. And I know that she’s still crying, because I hear the whimpers that she tries to hide. Even if she is drunk. And the pain only keeps coming, because I hate that I can’t do anything to stop hers. Nothing at all.

“I miss ya so much, Becks,” I whisper, not believing the words coming from my mouth. But they feel good. Freeing. Almost exciting.

“I . . . I do too, b-but I can’t go down that road ‘gain, Harry. I- I can’t do this,” she rushes. I hear noises on her line, but I can’t get out the words before the it goes dead. Silence.

I feel my phone slide from my hands slick with tears. It falls to the floor with a thud, but I hardly hear it. Because her voice is drowning out the sounds of everything else.

The thunder.

The rain falling harder by every second.

I press the pads of my fingers into my eyes and let my own rain fall. My fingers grow wet with every tear. Every single one I held in as her voice graced my ears. The tears that grew from the pain I heard in her voice. From when I heard about her dad’s diagnosis. And I think the ones I’ve been pushing away for a long time.

The rain welcomes a friend, and I join the drops drilling against the glass until the storm passes. But I know that although the storm inside of me passed for a little while, that it’s only come back stronger. The velvety sofa cushions and pillow welcome my tired body. I fall into a fitful sleep with her comforting voice dancing through my head. The only place I can see her again, and where I didn’t fuck everything up.

“Don’t worry, Becky. We’ll get this all figured out. You just do your best and take care of yourself and your father. Keep me updated on what you learn, and if you need extensions. Alright?”

“I can’t tell you how grateful I am,” I reply emphatically.

He nods before patting my arm and telling me to have a good day. I return it before leaving his office and feeling the slightest weight leave my shoulders. That was the easy part, I think to myself as I find my way through the twisty halls.

Looping my arm through my other backpack strap, I turn a corner and keep walking. I feel my heartbeat start to slow down after that nervous meeting with Professor Alcott, finishing up my afternoon of meeting with my professors. I couldn’t even believe the words leaving my mouth to grace their ears.

My dad was diagnosed with Stage 2 prostate cancer recently. We still don’t know a lot, but I wanted to let you know. I plan to still stay enrolled in the program and I’m committed to my courses. At the same time, I’m going to do what I can to take care of him. I will keep you updated as I learn more, but there are still a lot of unknowns at this point and . . . , I think, pausing the track I had on repeat for the last few hours. I had to figure out what to say, then rehearse it, and then say all of those words to the stern-looking expressions of my professors. Two of whom I’ve never even met before, because I’m taking their classes online. But my advisor, Sally, told me it would be best to meet with them in person. It’s more personal and shows your commitment blah blah, she said.

I’m just glad to have that part over with, I sigh inwardly.

The first fallen leaves of Fall crunch under my lace up purple Vans. The crisp air welcomes me. For a few seconds, I lose myself in the beginnings of the changing colors of Autumn. But the incessant worrying thoughts that have plagued my mind sit at the back, ready to pounce. I was rather numb for the first several days. I didn’t know how to function normally. Let alone inform my professors professionally and in person about the events that just rocked my life. I’m relieved that they were all very accommodating and kind to me about the news. But I know that the hard work is just about to begin.

A U2 song pours from my speakers as I back out of my parking space and start my journey home. I try to lose myself in the beloved lyrics, but it’s hard. When they become too relatable and too nostalgic, I skip it and the stereo player whirs as it thinks. My Spotify chooses a song at random - a favorite by Vance Joy. I roll my windows down and try to sing along.

I close my apartment door with my foot, sifting through the mail.

A bill. An advert for Skye. Another bill. Another cosmetology advert for Skye. An advert from my uni. Something Skye ordered from Amazon. A random magazine subscription that I most definitely don’t want to subscribe to. A sheet of Domino’s coupons. And a square periwinkle envelope with my name scrawled across the front. No return address.

My feet stop in the middle of toeing off my shoes. The one falls to the floor with an echoing thud. I swallow and pad slowly over to the kitchen island. Pushing Skye’s mess over, I let the pile of mail fall with a slap. With one shoe still on, I soon find myself sitting on the arm of the sofa. Backpack still heavy on my shoulders. Keys still hanging around my finger. But all I can focus on is the periwinkle envelope in my hands. And that familiar handwriting.

I hug it to my chest and tap my fingers along it as I think.

I know what it feels like, but I don’t know if I want to open it.

Because I know what will happen if I do.

But I can’t deny the first bubbles of excitement rising in my chest.

The first feelings of happiness I’ve felt in 11 days.

11 days since my dad announced that he has cancer. The dreaded C word.

My thumb does the first rip without me barely registering it. My excited heartbeat eggs me on. I try to rip it neatly, and leave the pretty envelope intact. But I’ve never been good at opening mail neatly. It’s just too exciting. I see the cursive word on the back first. The card company’s name.

The card is a periwinkle purple, like the envelope. He remembered it’s my favorite. My eyes fall closed without warning when I feel the hard square inside of the card. A sigh escapes my lips. It only grows longer when I feel the tiny imprints the pen left from pressing down hard in the author’s hand.

Exhaling slowly, I flip the card over and find a saying that I glance over. The cursive words made permanent by gold lettering tug at my heart. But I know that’s only the beginning. My finger pries at the opening and runs along the inside, feeling the bumpy impressions of the ink words. I rip the bandaid off and open it. But before I read anything, I grab a hold of the plastic square. I place it behind the card in my grip.

One step at a time.

The inside of the card is painted with sloppy black writing. At the sight of it, I watch my sight grow hazy. Starting at the beginning, I blink and feel the first tear fall when I see my name.

Harry’s name for me.

Dear Becks,

I saw this card and thought of you. The little bunny on the front just screamed your name, and well it harassed me during my whole shopping trip to buy it. Isn’t it just adorable? It made me think of the story you told me once about the baby bunny you found with your dad that was hurt. You both nursed it back to health before it hopped away back into the woods. Or your Dad called the animal services to take it to rehabilitate it. You said you couldn’t remember. Anyways, it made me think of you and the unimaginable pain you’re going through. You and your family. I never had the pleasure to meet your Dad but I wanted to extend my sympathies. He must be a pretty incredible man seeing how well you and Robbie turned out. You always spoke fondly of him. I know you’re very close to him, and because of that I know this is even harder for you. I’m so sorry. I’ve been thinking of you and your family often, and wishing there was something I could do to help. I’m so sorry, Becks. I really am. I don’t think there’s much else I can say to comfort you right now, or if there is I don’t know what it is. I’d just suggest doing what you can to be with your father during this time, and although it may be difficult to see him in pain, I think you’d be happy if you were there. No matter how things turn out, I think it would mean a lot to the both of you. I’ve experienced grandparents and loved ones passing, and it’s the shits but whoever said that it’s better to suffer together than by yourself was right. But please take care of yourself too. I don’t know what your plans are, but please don’t load your plate too full. Okay? I’m sorry, but you won’t be much help to your Dad if you’re giving yourself too much work. I’m so sorry that this is happening to you, Becks. It pains me more than you could know to know that you’re going through this. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Please let them know that. Take care of yourself, please. For you and your dad. If there is anything at all I can do to help please don’t be afraid to let me know. In the meantime, I hope that this Visa gift card will help. I recall you said you’re from Madley and your dad still lives there, which is quite the trip. I hope this money will help pay for petrol, meals, hospital bills, and anything else that may help make you and your dad comfortable. Myles’ brother who’s a doctor knows of some good docs at The Royal London Hospital where he works - if you’re interested, just give him a ring. I’ll be praying for a hopeful diagnosis and outlook for your dad, and that he recovers from this. I hope you’re hanging in there, Becks. Just take it one day at a time.

My chest shakes with a sob as I breathe in, but it’s so hard. And it hurts. Closing the card, I cover my face with it. And feel the warm tears paint my cheeks. I don’t know where they come from or how I haven’t ran out of them yet, but they keep coming. Without knowing it, I find myself sliding off the sofa and down onto the floor to rest against the sofa. Ugly sounds leave my lips and my body shakes with each sob. For the first time in days, there’s a feeling inside of me stronger than sadness for my dad.

Longing.

Missing.

I miss Harry. And I let myself feel all of it. Like I haven’t been letting myself for months. I forgot how much I missed him.

The way he could make me laugh.

How he always knew what to say without worrying it being the right thing.

His sunshine smile.

His molasses like voice - deep, rich, and syrupy sweet.

And most of all, the way his hugs fixed me like a bandaid. I feel my heart wrench with everything I miss, but it especially hurts when I think about how much I miss his hugs. And how badly I crave one right now. No, I need one.

I cry harder at that, because apparently things can get worse right now, I think inside the chaos that is my mind.

I miss my dad, even though I saw him yesterday when I went back home. And then I miss Harry, even though I kicked him out of my life. Even though I heard his molasses voice the other day when I mistakenly called him after drinking a bottle of wine.

I miss him so much and it hurts.

I didn’t know that I could even hurt more than I already was.

And I wouldn’t have guessed that his card warms my heart, and breaks it at the same time.

My thumb wavers over the keyboard of letters, indecisive and lost. I groan and walk away, padding out of the room and into our main living area.

“You better be getting a snack since you didn’t eat dinner,” Skye calls out to me from her perch on the sofa.

“Okay, Mom,” I retort, searching the shelves of the fridge. It sounds bad, but it only took Skye a major life event to do a decent job at grocery shopping, I recount. Grabbing a yogurt from the drawer, an apple, and a spoon from others, I leave with my dinner in hand.

The food falls to my desk with a clatter as my attention diverts to my phone. Waking it back up, I see the words I had typed out before. Without another thought, I press Send. With wide eyes and a shaky hand, I lay my phone face down away from me. I’ve only gotten settled and read a few lines from my textbook when my phone chimes. With teenage jittery excitement, I stare at it for a few seconds before daring to pick it up. My heart does a somersault in my chest at the sight of the name.

Harry.

I read over my text first, and then read his.

Hi. I can’t thank you enough for the incredibly sweet card. The gift card was more than generous. I don’t know which I cried more at. Just THANK YOU. A lot. I don’t know how many times I can say that. It was so kind of you to think of me and my dad.

My thumbs dance around on the screen. But before long, I set it down and try to immerse myself in my textbook. But it’s hard, because all I can do is think about him and our texts. I was texting him and we were talking, my over excited teenage-like mind thinks. But the adult part of it sweeps it under the rug, or tries to. Those two parts fight each other as I struggle to make sense of the chapter I’m reading. Because the teenage girl side wants to text him back, but the adult side argues there’s nothing to say. And that won’t I just get hurt again? I find myself nodding at that. Or more so, the argument it makes about there being no point in it. But the teenaged side reads into his words and grows excited at some of them. Talk about distracting.

“Oh my god, just stop!” I mutter aloud, covering my ears but it doesn’t work. Groaning, I flip the page and read on.

He helped and his card stands on my desk now, but I need to focus on my dad. And school. And this fricken boring chapter that I have an upcoming quiz on.

Voices carry down the tiled hallways. The sounds of footsteps sound like ghosts around me. So do the memories I have of these halls. Ones that stab at my insides as I walk further into them. I turn a corner and find the light at the end of the tunnel. He senses me and looks up. He shows a small smile as he crosses his arms over his chest. He’s continued to ignore the the circle of chairs in the waiting area. Instead, he leans against the wall nearby the door we’ve been staring at.

“Is he done with his labs yet?”

He shakes his head no, narrowing his eyes at me. “You said you weren’t going to go and cry in the bathroom, you liar,” Robbie jokes, but I don’t laugh. He purses his lips and holds his arm out for me.

I walk into them and rest my head on his chest. “Yeah well, you tell everybody that you’re the older twin when you’re not,” I quip with a sniffle. A laugh rumbles underneath my cheek.

“That’s ‘cause I am.”

“No, you’re not. Dad only said that when we got in fights to make you feel better,” I reply, closing my eyes and listening to his heartbeat. For some reason, his hugs never fail to calm me down. After a fight we had whether we were 5 or 15, when I snuck into his bed at night when mom and dad were fighting, after a pet died, even after a bad day at school, and especially lately with dad’s diagnosis. It only strengthens my belief about the whole twin thing.

He scoffs in reply and my lips find a laugh. “I want to see our birth certificates and settle this once and for all.”

I giggle into his warm chest and close my eyes. But then the thoughts and not longer after, the tears arrive. Robbie squeezes me and tickles my back with his fingers.

“They sounded hopeful at least,” he says quietly.

“Yeah, but they want to do chemo before and after surgery.”

“I know, but they said they have to be sure. If things look good when they’re doing the surgery, like clean margins or whatever it was, then he might not need chemo afterwards,” Robbie points out and I nod, feeling the damp spots on his shirt from my tears.

“He seems like he’s holding it all together pretty well.”

“Yeah he’s always had super strength. Remember in primary when we wrote that dad was our hero-.”

“And mom got mad,” I finish for him, adding my laughter to his.

“Yeah. And even though we made that superhero poster about him, I never stopped seeing him as a superhero,” Robbie says, slowly trailing off when the emotions steal his words.

“Bee, stop, you’re gonna make me cry even more.”

He laughs for a second, but then I hear him start to cry. His chest trembles underneath me. I give up and cry with him.

“Harry sent me a card in the mail,” I sob, hiccuping in between words.

“He did? I always knew I liked that guy. What’d it say?”

Something half-scoff and half-laugh is my response before I take a big breath. “I don’t know, it was just so sweet and kind. He said that he’s thinking of all of us, and told me to take care of myself. He said he knows it’s hard to see people you love suffering, but that it’s better to suffer together than on your own,” I choke out, tears drowning my words. “The card had a bunny on it. He said he got it because I told him the story of how Dad and I saved that hurt bunny. I wish he could’ve met dad when I still worked there . . And he sent a $150 Visa gift card to use for bills, petrol, and food.”

“Wow, that’s crazy generous. Wait, what? You two didn’t save it, the animal control people did,” Robbie argues and I just shake my head. “And don’t say it like that. Dad’s too stubborn to die, you know that. And with how much you talk about Harry, I’m sure you guys are gonna get coffee one day and fall in love and get married,” he continues, his voice quickly turning mocking and girly. I laugh and shove him, stepping away with a laugh.

“What?” he laughs. His voice is still under water, as is mine. “Why’re you annoyed I said that? Is it ‘cause that’s what you want? Did I expose your secret fantasy? ‘Cause ya know you can still go and date him, maybe it’s even easier now that you don’t work for him anymore.”

“Robbie, stop,” I reply, laughing with emotions fighting in my voice.

“C’mere,” he says, pulling me into his arms once again. “Ya know you can tell me. I can keep a secret. Scout’s honor.”

“No, you can’t! You always say that and it’s never true. You blabbed to the whole 1st grade I had a crush on Johnny Turner. Then, when I gave you a second chance, you did the same thing again in 8th grade with Willie. And you were never in Boy Scouts,” I scoff, holding onto tufts of his jean jacket.

“I was too!”

“Being it for one week and quitting because you went home in the middle of the first camp doesn’t count!”

“I still think it does. I have the outfit, sash, hat, and everything still. I made dad proud, and you know it. Now, stop avoiding the question. Why won’t you give Harry another chance?” Robbie continues, veering back to the topic I so conveniently changed.

“There’s nothing to talk about.”

“Hmmm, I don’t think I believe you, Ree,” Robbie tsks, his scratchy chin resting on top of my head. We hear the click of a door open, and I frantically wipe my eyes. “But I’m going to get the truth out of you one of these times.”

I roll my eyes at Robbie as I peer up at him. He winks before sloppily kissing my head.

“Come on, you rascals. Let’s get outta here before they try to poke me with any more needles,” our dad says, walking out of the room with his jacket folded over his arms.

I know he knows we’ve been crying, but he doesn’t mention it. I think another secret language is already starting to form between us. With Robbie’s arm around my shoulder, I grab hold of my dad’s hand. He turns to flash a tired smile at me, before placing a kiss on my forehead.

“Thanks for coming, guys,” he hums quietly as we stop in front of an elevator. His smile tugs at my heart. I’m just thankful to be able to still see it.

Stepping onto the elevator, he squeezes my hand hard, just like he always has done. “Dad, don’t!” I yelp and he chuckles under his breath.

After pressing the button for the lobby, I see Robbie’s lips bend upwards. This can’t be good. “Hey, dad, when we get home can you pull out our birth certs? I need to know the truth of who’s really the older twin.”

“Oh god. You two are 25 years old, when is this going to be over?!” my dad huffs, rubbing at his eyes, but with a smile. “Maybe I won’t take you with the next time, since it’s giving you existential crises,” he threatens, and we all fall into easy laughter.

“I’m gonna have an existential crisis if I found out you’ve been lying to me for my whole life,” Robbie exclaims and we all only laugh harder.

My backpack and coat fall to the floor with a heavy thud. With a yawn, I bend over to grab my things. The sound of chattering surrounds me. It slowly grows in volume as I sit there tiredly with my head down. I hear footsteps, laughs, and the scuffling of moved objects.

“Wake up!” a voice nudges at me. I groan angrily in response and hear laughter in response. I peek through a crack in my arm to find Ruby’s crazy red hair bobbing next to me. My newest friend from Criminology. “Just ‘cause we have a guest speaker today, doesn’t mean you can sleep.”

“Oh, that’s today?” I reply excitedly, returning to the warm cocoon of my arms.

“Yeah, but we still have to take notes. Ya know like last Wednesday when we had our first guest speaker? We had to write down questions for them, even if we don’t end up asking them. Alcott just wants us to get thinking and to well, pay attention. And not fall asleep like somebody! And then we have to write down 8 things that interested us, so get unpacking,” Ruby replies, her chipper voice drilling into my ears.

“Noooooo,” I moan, scrunching my face in secret.

I hear the door to the lecture hall close with a loud bang and Alcott laughs. “Alright, you lot, look alive. Our guest speaker has arrived and is ready to dazzle you this rainy Wednesday morning. Remember to be working on your page of ‘Ahas’ whilst he’s speaking. You’ll be passing it in at the end of class which is in 50 minutes,” Alcott announces. His Southern accent coming out in a few of his words.

“Shitttttt. I think I might like this guest speaker. Look at him, Becky. He is fineeeeeee,” Ruby whispers, elbowing me hard in the arm.

With a whimper, I sit up with a secret stretch. Combing my hair back, I rub at one of my eyes as they both struggle to focus.

“What, who’s fine? What’s fine?” another voice blurts out. I squint and look over to find Simon taking the seat on the other side of me. The little Criminology trio back together again.

“Not you being tardy, that’s not fine,” Ruby retorts with a smirk in her voice. I can’t help but smile. Simon flashes one at me as he combs a hand through his sandy hair after digging in his backpack.

“So without further ado, I’d like to introduce our guest speaker today. Harry Styles from Styles and Lawson. Let’s welcome Mr. Styles with open arms and give him our undivided attention, please.”

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” I mumble under my breath, coaxing a confused ‘what’ from Ruby and Simon’s lips .

“Hullo, class. My name ‘s Harry Styles, but ya can call me Harry. Ummmmm as Professor Alcott said, ‘m from tha London law firm Styles and Lawson. Me mate, Myles Lawson, makes up tha otha half o’ tha firm. This year it’ll be 5 years since we started tha firm togetha, which ‘s bloody crazy t’ me. Before, it was his dad’s firm, and long story short, Myles an’ I got togetha an’ here we are. Anyways, I make me rounds in London talkin’ t’ law classes. I’ve always enjoyed speakin’ t’ tha incomin’ lawyers an’ tellin’ some o’ me stories. An’ me favorite part - answerin’ questions. I thought ‘d start with how I got into law, tho’.”

Shit. I really should’ve known this would happen.

“Nothing,” I reply. “J-just hand me a piece of paper and a pencil, please,” I say briskly to Ruby.

The last thing I want is to make a single sound that will bring attention to me. But it seems like the universe doesn’t really care lately what I want. I’m already trying to figure out my odds of him spotting me in the sea of 50-so students. Amongst 35 or so ogling girls. Typical.

But the more my eyes focus and my ears attune themselves, I lose myself. I knew it wasn’t a dream when I heard the first word from his mouth. I’d know that voice anywhere. But when my eyes finally focus on the towering figure standing at the front of the room, my eyes struggle. Gone are his long curly locks, and replacing them is a short and curly quiff. I try to ignore the somersaults my insides are doing, but it’s terribly difficult.

Taking a deep breath, I savor listening to the words fall from those smiling cherry lips. In that slow, calming voice. Never being able to remain in one place, he paces around the front of the room slowly. Clad in a gray suit with a black button down, I slowly melt next to Ruby. Who from her choice of words, is doing about the same. Just in a less graphically described way than her. I can’t blame her, because somehow he has only gotten more handsome over the last year.

“Isn’t he just so nice to look at?” she croons.

“Oh yes,” I reply without thinking, and she sighs happily.

Simon groans in disgust, shaking his head. I see him out of the corner of my eye playing with the lead in his pencil. He tries to take it out in one piece before putting it back in. Rinse and repeat.

I bite my lip and somehow tear my eyes away and to the paper sitting in front of me. I scribble my name across the top. Numbering my page, I write down the first ‘aha’ I have.

1. Renowned lawyer with his own firm at 28. Almost unheard of.

Tapping the pencil absently at my thigh, I return my attention to the front. Playing with the rings donning his hands, Harry continues with the story of how he came to be a lawyer. One I can’t say I’ve heard before. Stuffing his hands in his pockets, he starts to walk again. Changing his focus from somebody in the front row, it suddenly floats up.

And lands on me.

Not only am I surprised, but so is he. The pencil between my fingers halts and altogether falls from my fingers. He stops mid sentence when his eyes lock with mine. My insides grow bubbly as a sparkle gleams in his eyes. I watch a grin unfold on his lips before he composes himself.

Clearing his throat, he asks, “I-I’m sorry, can somebody uh remind me what I was sayin’?”

Nervously, he combs a hand through his hair. Laughing, he thanks an eager girl in the front row when she reminds him. And soon enough, he’s back on track with a new nervousness to his voice, or excitement. I’m not sure which. And his eyes trail back to me after a few words, making a smile tickle at my lips.

Although hard, I look away and pretend to think of something to write. Feeling another pair of eyes on me, I look over and find Ruby’s hot on my cheek. I shrug at her jealous look and she just shakes her head. I laugh under my breath and she kicks me under the table.

I lose myself in Harry’s words for the rest of his talk, his maple syrupy voice like music to my ears.

He talks about starting his law firm with Myles.

Some of his favorite cases.

His first case.

His worst case.

His hardest case.

And then he goes on to answer questions. Ruby and I aren’t the only ones fawning over him, because most of the class is as well. Some girls are really flirting it up with Harry. He just relishes in the flattery, to no surprise. I try not to notice the few times he peeks at me when he looks for somebody to call on with a question.

“Why does he keep looking at you?” Ruby whispers to me as I write down another ‘aha.’ Some random takeaway from another story of his.

“How am I supposed to know?” I reply, twiddling with my pencil when I’m done. “Why don’t you ask him a question already? I can see the ants in your pants, Rube.”

“I don’t know, I think her question would be if he was single,” Simon jokes, garnering a few curse words from Ruby. I quietly laugh between their hushed argument.

“Well, ‘m gettin’ tha eye from Alcott, so I reckon that my time’s up with you lot. Thanks fer havin’ me an’ hopefully I wasn’t too boring t’ listen to,” Harry concludes at the front of the lecture hall.

I pretend I don’t hear Simon’s griping next to me. I can’t help but smile as I slide my backpack onto my shoulders.

“Not so fast, everybody. What do we say to Mr. Styles for speaking to our class today?” Professor Alcott pipes up. I join in on the class-wide thank you as I hand Ruby her pencil back.

“I bet you’ll be awake and ready for Wednesday lectures from now on,” she says, winking at me.

I roll my eyes with a grin as I start down the steps beside her. “Like you’re any better. I saw you both drooling from the corner of my eye,” Simon remarks.

“Maybe,” I say quietly, stuffing my hands into the pockets of my pullover quarter zip. The last syllable falls from my lips as my eyes pan over to find his head of dark curls.

Nearly at the uppermost row, my view wasn’t the best. As I near closer to him, his features sharpen and with the realization, my heart squeezes in my chest. Light stubble coats his dimpled cheeks as he smiles talking to a classmate of mine.

I’m only a few footsteps from the bottom now, following the slow line of people who are leaving. The angel and demon, for lack of better words, argue inside of my head. Should I go and say hi?

Yeah, why not?

No, why would you?

It would be rude if you didn’t.

It would be weird if you did.

But there are a handful of girls around him probably already flirting with him.

With an indecisive sigh, I clench my fists inside of my pockets. The two opposites inside of me clash, and I truly have no idea what to do. His card the other day was so kind and thoughtful. But I was a bitch the last time I saw him. I can’t believe it’ll be a year in two short months since I quit. Wow.

“I dunno why they’re bothering, it looks like he’s taken,” Simon snickers, earning a flick on the head from Ruby. “Don’t be a bitch just because I pointed out the truth. Can’t shoot the bloody messenger, Rube.”

I don’t intervene when Ruby chases after Simon to the door. Suddenly my feet stop around the corner from the stairs. Only a few more steps and he’d be out of my sight.

Again.

For who knows how long until next time.

I can’t take my eyes off of him. He really looks like he’s enjoying himself talking to law students. Up close, he really has grown more handsome over the last 11 months. I never thought that could be possible. Smiles crease his cheeks.And light up his eyes.

But when his left hand habitually goes to fix his quiff of curls, I see the gold ring Simon saw. He wore rings, but never that one. It’s like my heart is brought up from the bottom of the lake where it’s been, and takes another nose dive back down.

“Becky!” somebody calls for me. I blink and almost think it’s him. But when I look around for the culprit, I find Simon walking up to me.

I find it hard to squash the disappointment weighing inside of me. That it’s not Harry.

“Sorry, Si. W-what’d you say?” I reply, tearing my eyes away from Harry.

“Don’t look so sad he’s taken,” Si jokes quietly, putting an arm around me and squeezing my shoulder. I force a smile and walk to the door with him. “Wanna go get a coffee? Maybe that’ll cheer you up,” he suggests happily, his voice echoing in the hall to the door.

“Yeah sure,” I respond slowly, unsure of my words. I let him guide me out of the lecture hall and into the busy hallways.

Wow, Harry, you moved on from Amber that quick, huh? I think to myself with knitted brows and self-doubt. Swallowing, I try to push the nagging thought away. But I can’t, and I find myself barely able to carry on a conversation with Simon.

I thought seeing Harry in my lecture was one of the sweetest surprises. Instead, it feels like a happy dream that turned into a nightmare at the end.

Detective Conan & Magic Kaito Characters: Shinichi/Kaito Words: 2500 ish Chapter: (1) ... (9) (10) (11)

Shinichi always finds his neighbour weird. But he didn’t expect to find his neighbour lying on a patch of grass and donned in Kaitou Kid’s costume, too.

Shinichi had purposely taken an hour off work so he could drop by a toy store, get the gift, and make it just in time for the birthday party. But just when he was just about to leave, a piercing scream echoed throughout the toy store, and in the next second he found a woman lying in the middle of the aisle, death by cyanide poisoning.

Frankly, it was a lack of planning on his part—who knew his random murder magnet ability would decide to activate today?

In the end it wasn’t a hard case, but it was a painfully long one to wrap up. By the time he managed to calm the guilty husband, the bawling mother-in-law, and wait for his colleagues to collect every piece of evidences for the report, a good two hours had passed.

He was now late to the party.

After parking his car (he nearly knocked over his mail box when he did), Shinichi dashed to the house across the street.

Kyoko answered the door.

“I’m so sorry for being late.” Shinichi glanced past her shoulder, slightly relieved that the party was still on-going. He spotted Sakura, the birthday girl, laughing in her pink frilly dress with her friends.

“I should thank you for coming actually.” Kyoko returned an apologetic look and stepped aside for Shinichi to enter. “You must have been busy at work.”

“Not at all.” Shinichi smiled, glancing at the fancy decorations and the home-cooked food spread across a make-shift table in the living room. Honestly, Shinichi was probably no where as busy as compared to Kyoko today. Being a single, working mom was tough enough, but Kyoko never failed to put aside everything for her daughter. All Shinichi had to do was to keep to the promise he made when Sakura passed him her birthday invitation last week.

He had no excuse for anything—

“Shinichi nii-chan!” Sakura skipped towards Shinichi and gave him a tight hug. “You're here!”

“Yes, but I do have to apologise for being late.” "It's okay!"

Shinichi bent down, whipping the box he had hidden behind his back. “Here’s your gift.”

“Thank you so much!” Sakura hugged the present under her arm before grabbing his hand. “Now dat’ you’re here, you got ta’ see this too!” she exclaimed, dragging him across the room and to the crowd of children and parents.

“So who wants to be the— Oh! I guess we have a volunteer!”

It was a little intimidating to see all the turned heads and attention on him, but knowing the source of the voice did help to find some comfort in the awkwardness, even if he was the cause of it.

Kuroba waved Shinichi over.

Given Kuroba’s closeness with Sakura and Kyoko since the first day he moved here, it wasn’t surprising to see him invited. But it was a little irksome to see him charming all of Sakura’s friends and their parents too.

Sakura squealed and gave Shinichi a surprised push to the front. Before Shinichi could react to her strength, Kuroba grabbed his wrist, pulling him forward to his side.

“Let’s all give our volunteer a warm welcome,” he said and began clapping. Everyone followed.

Clearly, Kuroba needed to check his vocabulary and understand what volunteer really meant.

Kuroba pulled out a deck of cards from his pocket and fanned them out, showing Shinichi the back side. “I need you to pick a card from the deck.”

Though suspicious, Shinichi silently agreed. It was six of diamonds.

Then, after Kuroba placed the rest of the cards away, he snapped a finger, and a dove flew out from his sleeve and settled on his hand. Everyone awed in amazement, leaving only Shinichi the odd one out. Besides the simplicity of the trick, he didn’t feel good knowing the magic Kuroba had in mind involved his dove. He already had a fair share of bad experiences, like getting his property shitted on and his forehead pecked—

“Now, please hand the card to Tamago.”

Shinichi’s eyes twitched. He was hoping his glare might transmit his warnings to Kuroba or Tamago, but neither seemed bothered. He grudgingly obeyed and passed the card to the dove.

Card now clasped between its beak, Tamago fluttered away from Kuroba’s fingers and settled on Shinichi’s head.

What THE—

Kuroba squeezed his shoulder and placed a white hat on his head. “Remember your language,” he whispered.

Shinichi couldn’t see, but he could definitely hear the smile in Kuroba’s voice.

Kuroba turned to the crowd. “Let’s all count to three, shall we?”

When everyone’s chant hit the number, Shinichi felt a flutter on his head before a warm, and much furrier creature was replaced. It was also the moment Kuroba took the hat away, and a white rabbit immediately bounced into Kuroba’s chest as it nibbled on the same card that Shinichi had drawn out.

Everyone cheered (and Shinichi forced himself to clap just to blend into the crowd).

A few moments after the excitement died down and everyone wanted to see a new trick, Kyoko came out of the kitchen with a huge cake in hand; it was time for the birthday song. Kuroba then performed his last trick by lighting the seven candles with just a wave of his hand.

Everyone scattered after the birthday song, each enjoying the last dessert and chat before heading home for the night. But as for Shinichi, he chose to stand in the kitchen—the most secluded place in the house—and finish the cake in silence. He was quick to talk and gather information from people when it got to do with his work, but being sociable for the sake of socialising wasn’t something he was interested at the moment—

He irritably scratched a sudden itch on his head. It got to be the doing of the dove or the rabbit’s butt...

“Hello, my volunteer.”

Shinichi turned, eyeing Kuroba as he ambled into the kitchen.

“Of all the tricks, you just had to pull that one,” Shinichi muttered.

“I thought you liked it.” Kuroba tossed his empty paper plate into the trashbin. “You clapped in the end, didn’t you?”

“I couldn’t clap anymore sarcastically if I tried.”

Kuroba chuckled. “You clearly need to work on that.”

“...Are you a magician?”

It was nice to see Kuroba confused and not look like a smug ass. “What?”

“Not your alter-ego, or you.” Shinichi waved a hand over Kuroba, not really sure how to piece his words exactly. “I mean... your career.”

“Not full-time,” Kuroba answered (which ironically surprised Shinichi because he didn’t expect him to reply almost immediately). “I’m a freelancer.”

“So you’ve got an income.” Shinichi rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “Yet you steal…”

Rolling his eyes, Kuroba shook his head. “All these redundant questions again—”

The sound of scuffing made both of them turned, watching as two kids—one boy and a girl—nudging and pushing each other until they entered the kitchen together. Judging by their features, Shinichi guessed they were siblings.

Shinichi expected them to approach Kuroba, probably telling him praises and boosting his ego, but turns out they were walking towards him instead.

Kuroba didn’t seem displeased they weren’t his fans. Rather, he looked amused.

"Hello,” the boy greeted, his voice a little dreamy and mesmerised. “Sakura-chan said you’re a detective. Is that true?”

Huh. “Yes, I’m a detective,” Shinichi answered.

“Wow.” The boy widened his eyes as he looked between him and Kuroba. “Sakura-chan is so lucky. She got so many cool neighbours!”

“I also want to be a detective too!” the girl exclaimed. “Do you catch all the bad guys in the world?” she continued, as she swung her finger guns around.

“Of course. That’s my job.”

It was soft, but Shinichi heard Kuroba snorted. He turned, looking annoyed as Kuroba’s face split into a grin when they made eye contact.

Back then when Shinichi was still Edogawa Conan, they had made a silent pact to not uncover and expose each other real identities (even if Kid stupidly abused the system and disguised as him several times). But now that the pact no longer benefited Shinichi, Kuroba ought to start panicking; he should be going left and right and finding ways to protect his identity and alibi, in case Shinichi decided to bring him down one day out of the blue.

But looking at his comfortable smile, Kuroba seemed confident that the pact still existed, which was actually true. And it wasn’t because Shinichi didn’t have the evidence. Even if he did (which were the photos he’d chose to delete), those threats would only be used between them and not made known to any third-party, much less the police.

Shinichi hated how Kuroba seemed to be able to read him, and he hated how he couldn’t fully figure him out in return (given all the questions Shinichi hadn’t found an answer to). But what he hated more was the hard fact that when Kuroba smiled at him, there was a horrifying, millisecond moment in which Shinichi thought of… smiling back.

As much as Shinichi adored Sakura, he was glad the party was over.

Shinichi never expected Kuroba to listen to his advice, and he couldn’t fault him for it when he had played as Kuroba’s role for more than a hundredth time while Haibara Ai played as him; she was always trying to convince Shinichi not to do stupid things, like using the antidote just to make Ran happy for three hours, and then suffering the consequences for the next three months.

So, rather than extra advising, Shinichi decided to watch out for Kuroba instead, but without him realising, of course. Because the last thing he needed was Kuroba to think Shinichi actually had a single strand of care for him, even if he actually had more than five strands of it.

Shinichi liked to think his effort was just an act of a kind, neighbour thing.

Kid had held a total of three heists in the month after his hyperventilating attack. And during those three heists, Shinichi would tweak his radio frequency to match with the Kaitou Kid Task Force’s radio, gaining all of Kid’s information real-time. And when he knew how Kid escaped, he would spy Kuroba’s house by the window of his dark study room, watching and waiting till he safely reached his house.

It was good to know he didn’t stab himself with a knife while returning home.

But as for knowing if Kuroba was completely fine in his house… Shinichi believed his intelligent doves would know what to do if he wasn’t.

That was why when Shinichi saw a dove sitting on his mailbox after driving home from work one day, he automatically started to panic. A little.

“Shit.” Shinichi slammed his car door shut and stomped towards the dove. “Did something happen?”

The dove looked at him with its beady eyes.

“I asked if Kuroba is alright—”

(Probably thinking he was insane) The dove flew away and into the room with the balcony again.

It eerily felt like a Deja Vu.

Although Kaitou Kid didn’t hold a heist today, Shinichi knew for a fact that the symptoms of PTSD, like panic attacks, could come at the most random times. It was a risk he wasn’t willing to take.

Shinichi dashed towards Kuroba's house.

“Hey.” Shinichi rang the doorbell before changing to hammering the door instead. “Kuroba, are you inside?”

There was silence.

Shinichi leaned his ear against the door, trying to pick up any kind of sound. When there was nothing, he crab-walk around the house and covered both hands to prevent the reflective light from hindering his vision when he tried to look through the glass window. The blinds were down, but he could still see some gap—

“Uh, what are you doing?”

Shinichi jolted, whirling around with more relief than shock when he realised it was Kuroba, who was standing a few metres away and looking at him with the strangest look.

“I thought—” Shinichi shook his head. “It’s… nothing.”

Kuroba frowned and slowly walked towards his house. He gave Shinichi the side-eye. “Are you a pervert?”

Shinichi rubbed his temple to get rid of the incoming headache. “No.”

“Are you stalking me?”

“No.”

“Are you—”

Shinichi gritted his teeth. He was tired, frustrated at his mistake (for relying on a friggin dove), and clearly not in a right mind before he simply blurted, “Your dove was sitting on my damn mailbox.”

Instantly, Kuroba's teasing features disappeared before he nodded slowly in an emotionless understanding (It was strange how Kuroba seemed to get it, though Shinichi was also glad so he didn't have to admit the obvious). Three seconds ticked by in silence, and then Kuroba turned away to unlock the door.

“I was at the supermarket,” he explained.

Stupidly, Shinichi just noticed the grocery bag in his hand. He could make out the shape of a cartoon of eggs, and… ham?

“Ok," Shinichi mumbled.

“Yeah. So… thanks. I guess.” Kuroba paused. There was a flash of hesitance in his eyes, though they were gone when he spoke, "Thanks for your concern.”

“Hm, cool,” Shinichi said before pointing to his own house. “I’ll go back now.”

“Ok, cool.”

“Cool.”

Shinichi turned and stalked off, not once looking back. When he passed his mail box, he briefly wondered if he should just demolished it; its existence had caused a lot more complications to his life than he liked—

He brushed the ridiculous thought away and returned into his house.

Just two seconds away from entering his study room and suffocating his face into any of his Sherlock Holmes’s books, the doorbell rang. Shinichi frowned, ten percent liking the new distraction but ninety percent dubious about it. Frankly, he had almost forgotten how his doorbell sounded, given the rarity of anybody using it; he’d only interacted with his neighbours on the streets (saved for Kuroba) and rarely had any visitors. His parents got the keys too, so there wasn’t a need for them to use the doorbell. But even if they’d forgotten the keys, Shinichi knew they were somewhere in Russia for a holiday and not in Japan—

All these redundant questions again, he thought (annoyingly in Kuroba’s voice), before he decided to just check the answer instead.

He climbed down the stairs and opened the door.

Speak of the devil.

Shinichi made a face. “What is it?”

“...Apparently my gas ran out.” Kuroba raised a hand with a bag of grocery while the other carried a frying pan. “Can I borrow your stove?”

The Cunning Woman and the Demon: Chapter 5 - The Light of Day

Chapter 5 – The Light of Day

I awake to the morning sun bathing my face with a warmth I’ve not known in years. The bed is soft and swaddles me with crisp cotton sheets and a lofty featherbed covered by patchwork and lace. The glare of sunlight shielded somewhat by my hand over my eyes, I sit up and look around at the interior of the new cottage.

The walls are a creamy white, smooth but for moulded flourishes of knotwork designs – pretty touches either conceived by Finn or drawn into my visions for the place with him in mind. The wood furniture – the night table with its small lamp atop, the wardrobe in the corner, the desk and chair under the window, the bookcases – take up the motif as pops of colour against the natural wood finishes, a dark oak colour on the floor for contrast, with a red Oriental-style rug immediately next to the bed. The curtains are white, of a similar material as the quilt. This is definitely an improvement over the little hovel that stood here before.

Swinging my legs out over the side of the bed, I stand up and turn to make the bed; at once a small hue and cry reaches my ears and I’m bombarded by the Fireflies as they zoom up from the base of the stairs and fly towards me.

“Auntie!” One of the little ones squeals above the hubbub and flits in and out of my hair and over my ears.

“Good morning, darlings! I missed you all so much!” I am overwhelmed by relief and joy, cupping my hand to embrace the wee ones, bringing them as one to my cheek.

“Finn’s not awake yet,” says Joe. “He’s so tired. He’s been up the last five or six nights keeping an eye on you. We’ve been all so worried.”

“Five or six nights? My God! What happened?” I’d last remembered seeing the exterior of the cottage, just after Finn and I conjured it into existence. My dream of the Shadow felt as though only an hour had passed – maybe two.

“You were in a bad way, Auntie,” says one of the younger ones. “You were tired, but then you got a fever and were delirious. Finn had tried everything – he put you in cool water in the tub to try to bring it down, then he was looking through your magic book like a madman for something.”

Another of the Fireflies takes up the tale. “Then he found some wine, but then he cut his fingertip and squeezed some of his blood into it, then had you drink it. That was late one night when we thought…we thought you were going to die. It was horrible, Auntie – we were all so afraid, and poor Finn was nearly in tears as well.”

Joe offers the conclusion. “Anyway, when he saw that Bray’s magic was causing the infection and the fever, Finn put us out of the room. Through the door, we heard him say some words – I couldn’t understand them. A few moments later, he let us back in. That night your fever broke. You’ve slept like a log ever since, well, until you woke up.”

“Where is he?” I walk to the wardrobe, open the doors and give the contents a brief glance before I find a thigh-length red tunic and leggings. “The cottage turned out nice, I must say.”

“In the other bedroom, next to this one.” Another of the younger ones flits out to the hall – I have an upstairs hallway – while I throw on my clothes and reached for the hairbrush on the nightstand. I gave a quick few swipes along my hair to get out any tangles then quietly stepped out of the room.

The hallway was small and only consisted of the two rooms side by side, with a small alcove at one end where the stairway was railed off, furnished with a cushioned bench under a round window, with bookshelves underneath and along both sides of the window. My room was nearer the alcove; the other, near the top of the stairs.

I pad softly towards Finn’s room and gently open the door. He lies fully clothed on top of the bedcovers of his bed, his eyes closed tight and the brow furrowed, arms crossing his torso. Under his feet lies a wool blanket neatly folded in a strip. I furtively lift his feet to remove the blanket, then lower them before unfolding the blanket and pulling one end up to cover his arms and chest. I place my palm upon his forehead to check him for fever. It feels cool under my hand, the furrowing softening with my touch. I can’t help myself – my hand then wanders down to his cheek and strokes his face briefly, then I reach over the sleeping form – my hero – and plant a gentle but firm kiss on his temple.

My eyes suddenly fill with a vision of the Shadow, whispering as though in desperation, She’s the one! She is! We have found her! We must have her! Awake, Finn, and take her!

I pull away from Finn and stumble backwards, shaking and panting, my heart pounding in my ears as well as my chest. The man lying atop the bed, however, only stirs a moment before settling back to a peaceful sleep, his face untroubled.

I have to shield my eyes to avoid looking again at him. Terror mingles with mortification, along with something else I have not felt in many, many years – an arousal in my body that borders on frenzy. The Shadow I encountered in my fever was the Demon, that I know, but to see him loom so large within the figure reposing before me - What has he done to us? What have I? I wonder as regret seeps in. I back out of the room, beckoning the Fireflies to join me in the hall before I close the bedroom door.

I dash down the stairs, the Fireflies a multi-coloured blur weaving around me, a cacophony of questions and confusion equally fast and disorganized. I reach the bottom and turn left, to face an open living area with a fireplace centered in one wall, while an archway leads into the kitchen. I walk briskly through the archway and begin scanning the counters until I spot my grimoire on the wooden rectangular table.

The page is open to where, I suspect, Finn had found the recipe for the blood-and-wine concoction. As I sit in one of the four chairs surrounding it, however, I notice that the words on the page are not in my handwriting. While I recall a curative for fever from memory, I am almost certain it did not involve the blood of one to be given to another.

The formula includes a note:

While certain to bring the soul drinking it from the very edge of death, this potion does so by binding the drinker’s soul to that of whosoever gives their blood to and prepares the concoction. Between lovers already soulbound, the potion engenders an intensity of longing that shall never end, and only shall be calmed after it has been sated.

I struggle to calm myself; reading the very words is stoking the heat inside me. Quickly, I flip through the pages of the grimoire, looking for anything that might help cool the ardour. A cleansing bath on one page, for ridding one of a curse or a hex; black salt as a talisman on another page – A dilemma arises as I search. For whom is this affliction? The Shadow added the recipe to my grimoire, but does not have the fleshly form to manifest it, nor put it into effect. Yet, if it was for the Shadow alone, why would it – he - say “we”?

“Yer pulse was fadin’ fast ‘n’ you were burnin’ up wit’ dat fever,” Finn offers from the threshold of the kitchen, rubbing his eyes as he leaned against the arch. “He wouldn’t tell me de whole story of the potion until after I’d given it to ya. If I’d waited, you’d be a goner.”

The Fireflies circle in the air around me before settling on my shoulders, their miniscule arms pressing my flesh in eight tiny hugs. Finn’s voice sends a frisson of anticipation down my spine, every syllable a soft, deep note in the most seductive melody I have ever heard. The heat rises in my face as I shrink in the chair.

“You did what you had to do, Finn,” I replied, trying hard to keep my gaze from him. “And for that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

He plods over to the table and stands over me. “De Demon…dat sneaky fecker… here you were practically possessed by whatever he’d done wit’ dat potion, den he tells me ‘bout d’infection settin’ in and dat I had to finish de restoration spell on you and get all dat gunk off ya. I’m sorry I didn’t do it before.” He then pulls out the chair to the right to mine and sits down, his left arm draped over the back of my chair. My God, he’s so close to me. We lay together that night in the cell and I had felt something, but not like this. I should not be feeling this way, not now.

Finn places his right hand on mine. The touch sears my soul with long-lost memories from my time before this place, before Wyatt, even before the Shadow. Lifetimes flash before me of war and peace, of opulence and want, of freedom and slavery, of joy and pain and fear and love – and in them all, he was there with me. He had always been there, until I came here. The ardour in me has become almost painful; my breath catches and tears fill my eyes as I look up at him. His eyes are wide and his mouth agape, lips turning blood-red, even as he tries to soften his glance when it meets mine.

“Little ones,” I choke out, finally. “We’ll have to leave you to your own devices today. Finn and I have to sort out a few things and we can’t be disturbed.” I slip my hand away from his and rise from the table. Quickly but with the engagement of an automaton, I move to the counter and prepare the day’s meals for the Fireflies: a small cup of milk for each, along with pieces of bread and a thimble of honey for dipping. The little ones flutter from my shoulder to partake in the offering.

Finn joins us at the counter, bringing an arm around me and pulling me close to his torso. In my ear he breathes, “Dey’ve been good on deir own while you were ill – Joe’s given me notes on lookin' after dem and been debriefin’ me in d’evenin’s. Dey can wait ‘til dis evenin’ fer ya. C'mon. I tink we've some catchin' up to do.”

He pulls me away from my charges and the counter, guiding me by my shoulders back through the living area and up the stairs.

Half Baked: a bad idea/poor planning headcanon.

They’re all sitting around the living room, and of course maybe too many drinks have been shared over the course of the evening. He’s got an unfinished beer between his thighs and just finished the three fingers of whiskey when Riggs asks the question. And for a moment he freezes. Tries to think of a moment. Doesn’t get very far when there’s a chorus of feminine voices all saying “The GOAT!”

He almost chokes up laughing. Good point. Runs a hand through his hair, a wreck since he hadn’t bothered to style it and for a moment, recognises if he doesn’t get it cut, he’s gonna start looking like Riggs any day now.“Okay, okay. So. Ulster here,” he leans over and slaps a palm across Luka’s chest. “Is on a ballistic missile sub and so me an’ a couple of guys mail him a gay porno mag. Of course, him and his squaddies get smoked for it. So he gets even… first, he gets Beth to send me cookies. I had to do one handed push-ups while feeding myself cookies til I puked.”

Riley’s already laughing as he lights up a smoke. “So I have Jay send him a big purple dildo, right, that he gets to carry around everywhere for weeks.

“Anyway, there I am, clever as fuck and get shipped to Bumfuck K…somewhere in the sandbox. I’m in the camp down hill from him. In a brilliant bit of black ops, asshole and his squaddies manage to sneak a goat into my hut. Tie it to my bunk. After a long ass day, we getting ready to fall in and then I see this poor thing. Now I’ve got maybe five minutes before walk-through. And I’m trying to get it outside. But the little stubborn fucker won’t budge right?“It’s running around the hut, under bunks and over trunks and shit. Pissing itself the whole way and I’m finally in reach and dive for it. Face right in its junk, hands around its back legs as our CO comes in.

“So Cappy takes one look…and says…”In unison, Luka, Beth, Jay, and Riley himself turn to Riggs. “Six, I don’ know if you is dat way, but if you is…you better GO THE FUCK AWAY!”They all start laughing then.

“So no shit, there I was, covered in goat, laying chest down on the hut floor looking up at the biggest, angriest motherfuckin’ ring-knocker in the joint… and my new best friend for months is this goddamn goat. We named him Schmiffy and he was our mascot. And then, eventually when it was time to pick up our kit and move on, we left Schmiffy with a local family.”

Steven Universe: Woomera - Chapter Three

Three

Every time I thought I'd got it made It seemed the taste was not so sweet

Civic was the cultural and social hub of the city of Canberra.

All things considered, this was not saying much.

Certainly, the twin Sydney and Melbourne Buildings, stately Mediterranean-styled structures on opposite sides of Northbourne Avenue, had a goodly variety of shops and restaurants, and there was the Monaro Mall if you wanted to visit the upmarket David Jones department store. There was the stately Hotel Civic, famed mostly for a protest against its gender-segregated public bar back in ‘65. But it was just too quiet and dull compared to Sydney or Melbourne, and it lacked the country-town charm of a rural centre. People didn't excitedly anticipate going to Civic - they went there because there was absolutely nowhere else.

Well, except perhaps Queanbeyan, but that was a bit of a drive.

O’Reilly’s was an Irish Pub on the corner of the Sydney Building (or so it was claimed - the founder was an American who'd never been to the Emerald Isle in his life, and the dark, shadowy musk felt more like Goulburn than Galway). It was by no means the heart of Civic, but it was cheap, and that was what mattered to its patrons. There were no politicians here, no big-name journalists - just ordinary people.

Lapis sat at the bar, looking at a dog-eared copy of the Canberra Times. It had been printed this morning, which was already starting to feel like an age ago. OPPOSITION BLOCKS SUPPLY, it bellowed.

“No kidding,” muttered Lapis.

She shrugged and turned through the pages, past the editorials and the letters and through the various local news stories, and found herself at the sports pages. She looked again to be sure, and then threw the paper away in disgust. No abandoned car story - the editor hadn't run it. She doubted he'd even looked at it.

She sighed, burying her head in her arms.

“Can I get you anything?” the bartender asked helpfully.

“Can you get me a ticket out of this place?” replied Lapis.

“I can get you a beer,” shrugged the bartender.

Lapis groaned.

“Straight vodka,” she replied, “It’s been that kind of day.”

“Right away, ma'am.”

The bartender walked off to prepare the drink. As he walked along the counter, he passed two young women, both on the short side, in animated discussion.

“Amethyst, you know I can't,” said one, “I've got an essay due the next day and I need that time to study!”

“C’mon, Peridot, this is what student life is all about!” exclaimed Amethyst, “You gotta live a little!”

“By attending a communist rally?”

“Socialist,” Amethyst corrected, “It’s a big tent. And it'll be for a good cause! Trust me, I know a bunch of people there, you'll fit right in!”

“Amethyst…”

“Would you do it for me?” asked Amethyst, grinning sweetly and leaning in on her friend.

Peridot’s face turned red.

“I… uh… sure, okay. But don't do that here, we’re in public,” she warned.

Amethyst sighed and sat back.

“Being in public sucks,” she grunted.

“Well, we’ll be back at the dorm soon,” shrugged Peridot.

Amethyst grinned.

The bartender walked back past them, handing the shot of straight vodka to Lapis. He sat the glass down in front of her, a bit of strain in his expression. He looked like he wanted to say something, maybe, but Lapis wasn't particularly in the mood for chit-chat.

"I know what I'm doing," she grunted, letting her fingers circle the rim of her liquid courage. The man's frown deepened momentarily, but he walked away without any probing questions.

Mission accomplished. Miserably, Lapis raised the shot glass.

“Here's to Melbourne,” she said, “Some day.”

She sighed, draining the small glass in one go and shaking her head.

Not far away, Donald Fryman sat at a table, rubbing his temples. A friend of his, a local lawyer named Marilee Zircon, regarded him with sympathetic eyes.

“I'm sorry, Don,” she said, “There just doesn't seem to be anything we can do about it. The RSL guys just won't hear it.”

“Why not?” demanded Fryman, “They're the Returned and Services League. I'm a returned serviceman! Why can't they let me in?”

“They, uh, they sent me a letter, but I don't think it's…” Zircon began.

“Give it here,” grunted Fryman.

Swallowing, Zircon produced a single sheet of paper from her pocket and handed it to Fryman. He unfolded the sheet and read it out loud.

“Ms. Zircon,” he read, “As Mr. Fryman did not serve in a real war - that's underlined, glad they made that clear - we are not obligated to provide him with membership or support. Furthermore, we believe that the conduct of servicemen in the late war in Vietnam does not correspond with the values of the RSL or the Anzac tradition… where the fuck do they get off on this?”

He threw the letter down in disgust.

“Don…”

“I need some air,” snapped Fryman, climbing to his feet and marching to the door.

The night was brisk - although winter was long over, the Canberra evenings still had their bite. Fryman walked up to his rusty old car and stopped next to it, lighting a cigarette.

“Bad night?”

Fryman looked up. Bill Dewey stood under a street lamp by the bus stop.

“Mhm,” grumbled Fryman, “Bad day. This Senate crap’s turning Parliament House upside down. They've got me guarding Fraser now - twelve ‘till ten, can you believe it?”

He took a drag of his smoke.

“If I wanted to work those hours, I'd have stayed at Nui Dat.”

Both men chuckled, and Fryman took another drag.

“So, what’re you up to?” asked Fryman.

“Waiting for a bus,” replied Dewey.

He leaned forward, looking left and right, and shook his head.

“It never seems to be coming, does it?” he sighed.

“Nah,” said Fryman ruefully, “Typical Canberra buses.”

He took one more drag of his cigarette and dropped it, crushing it under his shoe.

“Well, one more,” he said, “Then I’d better be getting home to Peedee.”

“You have a good night, Don,” Dewey nodded.

Fryman smirked and performed a mock salute.

“You too, Lieutenant Dewey.”

He turned and walked back inside. He was halfway back to Zircon’s table when he felt someone tug on his arm. He turned - an elderly fellow, perhaps sixty years old, was sitting alone at a table. He was gaunt, his dark rimmed eyes magnified by a pair of glasses.

“Couldn’t help but notice you’re getting screwed by the RSL too,” he said raspily, “Same happened to me, you know.”

“I’m sorry to hear it,” nodded Fryman.

“Yeah, it’s the way it goes, isn’t it?” grunted the man, “The government calls you to do it’s dirty business then throws you away when it’s done.”

He shook his head.

“They sold our lives at Woomera,” he muttered darkly, “May as well have fuckin’ shot us themselves.”

Across the bar, already fairly drunk, Lapis’ ears perked up. Woomera… Woomera, that was important… Roy Bradley’s car! WOOMERA!

Lapis pursed her lips and nodded to herself. It was time, she decided, to start getting some answers.

She climbed to her feet in determination. Then she swayed, losing her sense of balance, her vision swimming and her head pounding. Bile built up in her throat. For a moment, she glanced back at the counter, and the ten shot glasses that had accumulated in front of her stool suddenly into sharp focus.

As she fell backwards, crashing to the hard, tiled floor, she asked herself if ten shots of straight vodka had really been such a good idea.

Then there was a crash, and all was dark.

There’s a blissfulness about unconsciousness, about neither feeling nor thinking. One can’t really be hurt or punished in such a state - it is a strange sort of zen, bereft of the wonder of dreams or the terror of nightmares.

Usually it’s to define when consciousness returns. The exception to this rule is when it comes back in the form of a pounding, splitting headache. In those cases, it comes back with great and unwelcome fanfare.

Lapis groaned, clutching her head as she took stock of her surroundings. She was back in her apartment - how did she get here? She’d been laid on the couch, a pillow under her head and a blanket over her body. Did she walk home? Get a cab? Fly, even? That perhaps was unlikely, but part of her didn’t want to rule it out.

Still moaning to herself, she sat up. The apartment was a mess, but that wasn’t new - cleaning products were expensive and she wasn’t exactly swimming in money. Among the dusty pile of old newspapers and junk mail on the coffee table, she sighed a clean sheet of a paper, a hastily scrawled note written upon it.

Found you laying outside that Irish Pub at eleven last night and helped you get home. Hope you don’t mind, but I had to go through your pockets to find your keys. - Greg.

Outside? But… but she passed out inside the pub, so…

So they’d picked her up and deposited her on the pavement outside at closing time. Typical. Stay classy, O’Reilly’s.

She picked up the note paper and turned it over in her hand. There was a logo printed on the other side; It’s A Wash! An address underneath revealed that the business was in Acton, and was owned by a Greg Universe. Maybe she’d have to thank him.

She looked at the clock and sighed heavily. It was already evening - she must have slept all day. She’d be in trouble, except she doubted anyone at the Canberra Times had even noticed she hadn’t come in. Sitting back on the couch, she grabbed the remote and turned the television on.

Immediately, she was met with the face of Gough Whitlam, in the middle of an interview with someone at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation - the ABC.

More politics, she thought to herself. It was hard not to get sick of it all.

“...so, must Sir John Kerr accept your advice whatever advice you give-”

“Unquestionably!” Whitlam replied forcefully, before the interviewer had finished his question, “The Governor-General takes the advice of his Prime Minister and from no one else.”

“And must act on that advice?”

“Unquestionably! The Governor-General must act on the advice of his Prime Minister.”

“There is no tolerance here? He must do-”

“None whatever.”

Huh, Lapis thought. Well, this was a slightly interesting development - it seemed Whitlam was making it especially clear that he had no intention of backing down. Still, it all seemed a bit strange and technical. Who cared about the Governor-General anyway? He sat in a mansion and rubber-stamped laws, everybody knew that.

She turned off the TV. It wasn’t worth worrying about.

There was a lot worth worrying about for Pearl.

The press gallery was already going off; she could hear them from the Prime Minister’s offices. She didn’t blame them - the Prime Minister had directly challenged Ellicott’s legal opinion of the previous day, which wouldn’t have been a problem, except for the fact that it could easily be interpreted as a challenge to Sir John Kerr himself.

It made yesterday seem simple by comparison - a spat between Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser, a normal dispute between parties. Now it threatened to become something impossibly larger. They’d called it a constitutional crisis yesterday - now ‘crisis’ seemed too tame a word. The world had turned upside down once again, and it had only just gone five.

It seemed it’d be a late night, so she’d headed down to grab a coffee. She needed caffeine - it was that or insanity, at this stage.

She met Fryman at the cafeteria, intently studying the board, his eyes sunken and weary. Pearl’s heart went out for him - being a security guard was a thankless job, after all. Next to him was one of her counterparts from Malcolm Fraser’s secretarial pool; a tall, lithe, blonde woman, conservatively dressed, her face set into a perpetual frown.

Yellow - for that was what everyone called her - had a reputation for being neurotic and something of a perfectionist. She was often hard to like. Yet under that exterior was a deeply competent woman, and one that Pearl respected...at a distance.

Nevermind the company. She came here with a goal in mind, caffeine, and she was going to see it through. Pearl stepped up beside Yellow and waited for her turn, though she was pleased when the pair included her in their conversation.

“That Briggs man came around today,” she spat, and Pearl raised an eyebrow.

“Martin Briggs?” she asked, “From the American Embassy?”

“Yeah, I saw him heading into Fraser’s office,” nodded Fryman, “What did he want?”

“I don’t know,” replied Yellow, “Something or another; Mr. Fraser was busy so I told him to come back next week. And then he hung around for twenty minutes leering at me. How does someone so uncouth get to be a diplomat?”

“Beats me,” shrugged Fryman.

“Yeah, he was coming onto me yesterday,” said Pearl, “Gough sent him off - told him to come back at six.”

“Well, if he came back, I didn’t see him,” shrugged Fryman, “But I might have left before him.”

They chatted idly for a little longer as the line moved. Eventually, Pearl had her coffee - no sugar or cream, as usual. Yellow turned her nose up at it.

“You’d have it without milk if they let you,” she sniffed.

“I don’t tell you how to have your coffee,” snapped Pearl.

Yellow snorted as she walked off, leaving Pearl and Fryman alone.

“Are you sure you don’t want to…” said Fryman, looking down at Pearl’s mug.

“I’m sure,” replied Pearl, “Certain flavours make me gag. I’ve always been something of a fussy eater, at any rate.”

“Get it from your parents?” asked Fryman.

“I don’t really remember my parents much,” replied Pearl, “Dad was a railwayman, he left my mother shortly after I was born to go to Junee. Then she died of pneumonia when I was about four, so I grew up with my relatives in Queanbeyan…”

“Oh.” Fryman bit his lip. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be,” Pearl shrugged, “I don’t think about them much, anyway.”

He nodded, covering his mouth as he yawned.

“I’d better get back to my post,” he said, “You have a nice evening, Pearl.”

“You too, Fryman,” nodded Pearl.

She yawned on reflex as the security guard walked away, and gazed morosely into her coffee. Her face was reflected in the cloudy liquid - god, she looked tired.

To think it was only day two.

Wish Granted

The lights in main room were dim, casting shadows over the faces of the two men standing behind the Don. Though their features were obscured there was little doubt they were a pair of the troll’s rumored zombies.

Seated across from the Don, arms nestled comfortably on stuffed armrests, the draenei’s smile grew wider, parting his lips while he waited for the troll to speak. He let his gaze canvas the table taking in all the knick-knacks, like the used ashtray facing the pair of guest chairs, one of which he occupied. His host seemed preoccupied with a pair of carved dice, but patience was a virtue Mosur found he could summon an abundance of when necessary.

The moments passed by, the only movement in the room belonging to the flick of the draenei’s tail and the troll’s constant toying with his dice, the gentle clattering of them on the leather desk mat was the only sound to be heard while they waited. The dice looked out of place compared to everything else on the desk, they were crude and appeared to be carved out of cheap, yellowed ivory. In contrast other items on the troll’s desk were expertly carved, smooth with a lacquered sheen and full of deep rich colors. He spun them on their corners between thumb and finger and let them fall then inspecting them for a few moments before repeating the motion.

“It be done,” the troll spoke after a final drop of the dice. A pair of ones showed on the carved lopsided faces. His gaze shifted upward to read the draenei guest’s face.

“We’re certainly glad you approve Don. We’re only looking for a mutual working relationship with you and your family in the future and thought a proper show of neighborly goodwill was in order.”

“Neighborly good will? Dah Cabal lookin’ ta move some ah its business ova ta Kalimdor, dat be what dis is all about?” He questioned, still studying the well dressed man across from him.

“I can’t say for certain. It is a possibility in the future, but we aren’t planning to at the moment, no. We’ve just been aware that you’ve been making more and more of your home here in Stranglethorn, and as I said wanted to show you proper appreciation.”

Leaning back the troll pressed the butt of his palms against the front edge of the desk, pushing himself comfortably back against the chair and pulled open the desk’s front drawer. His attention had dropped away from his guest as the draenei offered no real threat to him in his own home with his own protections. “Ya said dis wasn’t ah gift ya was lookin’ for anyt’ing in return fa, but Papa be honest. Ya have done him a great service dis day, d’oh ya may not know it.” He lifted a leather-tied necklace from the drawer, hanging from it was a white porcelain jar, though one flattened in design. The leather lace was looped through the small handles on either side, the jar itself was just bigger than an old fashion gold piece. He held it out toward the draenei and read his curious expression. “Ya know Papa’s reputation, so ya know when ah be tellin ya dis will grant ya any wish, ya know it ta be true. Take it.”

After just a beat Mosur reached out and took the leather-lace necklace from the trolls hands and glanced down at it. “A wish, huh? So I could just wish for enough money to retire on?” He chuckled, though the idea of selecting one wish was a bit overwhelming. It would be something he’d have to think about.

“Ya could wish fa somet’in like that, ya. But Papa gonna give ya ah warnin’ just dis one time. Ya best be careful w’at ya wish fa, dah spirits be fickle t’ings mon. Best be makin sure ya wish is some kinda selfless else dey may take it outta ya blue hide.” The Don’s right eye glinted in the low light as he settled back into his chair and stared in silence. Several moments passed before Mosur realized they were done here, the meeting over, dropping the joking tone he quickly responded as he stood. “Thank you Papa Don Sowdi for your generosity. I will take your words under advisement.” With a shallow bow at the waist he turned and left, passing through a thick curtain of beads and down the stairs back out through the trolls main lobby.

“Well, how did it go?” The unmistakable voice of Zaanthe.

“It went well. Papa was pleased with our show of goodwill. He even gave us a gift in return.” Mosur tilted his head to the side and looked back over his shoulder grinning at the Cabal’s ‘pretty boy’ enforcer.

He decided not to tell the Cabal about the Don’s generous gift, at least not till he’d had time to think it over. He kept the the leather-strung porcelain jar around his neck to keep it safe. He had a lot of ideas and a lot of questions. Primarily, how did one use the wish? Was it a simple ‘I wish…’ or did he need to break the porcelain while wishing? Maybe just break the top of it off at the neck? Was it even hollow? These were questions he should have asked in that window of silence the troll had given, he figured. Beyond how it worked though he had to decide what to use the wish on. Should he plan out an elaborately worded wish, or save it for an emergency? Maybe there was an expiration date on the wish itself and if he waited too late it wouldn’t be worth anything.

“If you could wish for anything what would it be?” Mosur said flopping down a pair of jacks on the table and a three in the center.

“Anything?” The hollow question rang back at him. The well dressed man sitting across from him drew another card.

The light above them swung and the ground above their heads rumbled causing Mosur to look up at the underground structure’s ceiling. He was certain the trains would cave this area in one day, but his host didn’t seem to mind, didn’t even look up anymore. It could hardly be called a room, the old sewers had been cleaned up long ago and left empty. It was cheaper than filling them in. Sometimes the transients found there way down here but they didn’t always make it back out. Mosur was seated on a metal container which looked like it had come from the docks, and the table they played cards on was the side of a wooden container held up by milk crates.

“I would wish that the remainder of my tenure were to go smoothly.” The man, another draenei, laid down a set of three 9s and placed one on top of the stack.

“Tsk, isn’t that a little selfish?” Mosur countered and drew another card he laid it down on his side. “On your 9s.” He said and put one in the center stack face up.

“Depends on how you look at it. Yes. No. For my tenure to go smoothly it means my sister would have to have a comfortable and easy life, and to stay out of trouble. That in turn would make my tenure easy, I don’t mind things as they are, I just want her to have better.” He drew a card and then place it on top of the pile.

“Humph, well…” he murmured, looking over the page, he’d scribbled the words down here and there and--try as he might--he couldn't think of anything selfless. Mosur popped up out of the chair and tossed the tanned book onto the bed. Grabbing his jacket from the chair back and gun from the table he hustled out the door and down the stairs. They had a run tonight but by the sounds of things the time had been pushed forward. “What’s the word?” He asked pausing in the back alley of the Heart.

Hadeon watched the lithe draenei straighten his collar and re-tuck his shirt while he explained. “Kedron sent me a message. They are moving the crates out before the sun goes down. I know we do not normally meddle in the affairs of other families but their practices still sit poorly with me and we are not going to let that cargo sail. You all know what this is about, bust open the ones you can, Zrimgor and I will take care of the rest.” The old soldier glanced around at the rest of the Cabal and nodded his head motioning for them to head out.

This wasn’t Lucdamis’ dock, though neither he nor Nesuros would probably have issues with this cargo. No, this was one of the more recently built Westfall docks, no one had really placed claim to it yet, though some were beginning to use them like they owned them. Mosur started to think the families needed to get together and have a discussion about it before it got out of hand.

“Okay, okay, okay,” Mosur said and held up both hands, his pistol still held in his right hand with his finger free of the trigger. His thoughts whirred as he tried to think of a way to get them all out of here, out of this mess. Zaanthe was out cold and his two knights were dealing with issues of their own. “How about we all just walk away from this.” “Walk away from this?!” The well dressed night elf roared. “Do you know how much you bastards have cost me? Do you know how much trouble you’ve caused, how much of my cargo you’ve ‘liberated’?” His voice got louder with every few words.

“Yeah but we can make a trade or a bargain you kn-” Mosur was abruptly silenced by the ringing of a gunshot as Greensen fired into the air.

“No! There is nothing you can do to get yourself out of this. It’s about time you people-”

“What about a wish!?” Mosur blurted out and hooked his thumb around the leather thong about his neck. He pulled the white porcelain pendant free continuing to hold his hand open.

Stunned for a moment Greensen stomped his heavy shoed foot on the dock and fired another bullet. The shot whizzed past the draenei’s ear. “What kind of idiot do you take me for?” “No, no, it’s true. You know the Don, the Papa? Papa Don Sowdi, the troll, the one that dabbles in the arts still yeah? Yeah this is from him, a favor for a favor. It’s real, he said it would grant any one wish.”

The elf sneered at the draenei and looked back to one of the fair-skinned entourage that accompanied him, rumor was they were a seer. “Well…is he telling the truth?”

Mosur watched as the calmer underling studied him, watched his eyes narrow. Was he some kind of shadow weaver? Did he do the kinds of things Rook could? Mosur didn’t know he stood there hoping to be believed, his heart pounding and his throat tightening.

“He speaks the truth.” The soft voice of the elven seer came after what seemed like an eternity. “The Don bestowed this gift to him a week past and he has agonized on what to wish for saving it until this instance where he has now offered it to you.”

“And?”

“That is all I see.” The seer spoke again, bowing their head.

“What the fuck Mosur!” Zrimgor growled looking up from his hands and knees. Greensen’s men had done a number.

Greensen gritted his teeth and sneered at the draenei. “Toss your gun in the water.”

“What? When did you get that? Just wish us out of-” Hadeon’s gruff but annoyed lecture was cut short as a bullet tore into the left side of his abdomen.

“Shut up!” Greensen stomped again the agitation in his voice rising..

“Do we have a-”

“TOSS YOUR GUN IN THE WATER!” He screamed cutting off the draenei he was bargaining with. Mosur exhaled and tapped the side of the trigger guard with his finger. The gun wouldn’t do him much good anyway, he only had one bullet and by now Greensen’s men had time to gather around. With a flick of his wrist he tossed the gun toward the edge of the deck, it landed with a clatter and slid another inch or two before splashing into the dark waters below.

“Now the necklace. Lay it down and then get out.” He said tempering his tone and leveling the gun toward Mosur once more.

Mosur ducked his head and pulled the necklace free; he bent to place it on the ground not sure what would happen if the porcelain broke. He kept his gaze on the trigger happy elf and stood back up.

“I said get your guys and GET OUT!” He raised his voice at the end again and watched as Mosur struggled to lift Zaanthe with Zrimgor’s help. Hadeon was already backing out with his one arm limp at his side and his other pressed against his wounded abdomen..

“Consider this the only mercy you’ll ever see from us...and spread the word.” He said darkly and walked over to lift the necklace as the four draenei hurried in their escape. “Any one wish, huh?”

“What the hell Mosur! Any one wish? And you just gave it away to that bastard!?” Hadeon cursed him.

“Why didn’t you just wish us out of that situation?” Zrimgor’s deep voice questioned immediately after, it was likely what Hadeon was going to say at the docks before he’d been cut off.

“And where the hell... you said you got it from the Don? That was more than a week ago, you kept it from us!” Hadeon continued to bitch as the moved into Elywnn.

“Lets not start pointing fingers about unshared information now. You said he was trafficking humanoid cargo- those guys were dead!”

“Undead.”

“Whatever, undead, they were undead that weren't attacking back which meant he had some way of controlling them or making them docile and you didn’t tell me or Zaanthe. Last time I checked you’re also undead!”

"All'a it?" She tries to keep a serious face, she does. A little tilt of stubborn jaw, her mouth drawn into a grim line, brows dipping down between her eyes. And she manages to make it convincing for a whole maybe five seconds before the corners of her mouth twitch, her nostrils flare with an inward breath, before her nose wrinkles where the corners of her eyes meet it and she can't help the laugh that comes pouring out of her. She shouldn't be teasing Luka like that, it's not really fair when she is sure the question is asked in earnest. She can hear it in the rough timbre of his voice, the way the words seem to pile up in his throat and only come out once they've been gathered like gravel in a river bed. She can see it in his eyes, the way they darken and slide away from her face almost entirely once she does laugh, and in the reddened tips of his ears, the splotch of angry colour spanning the back of his neck, one of Luka's give-aways that he's become uncomfortable, embarrassed, upset without anger or ~in some cases~ reason. And that in turn takes some of the wind right out of her because she didn't mean it to be hurtful. Beth has had a long standing difficulty with the topic, with the action, with everything related to it, and she can't lie, she feels terrible for him. Like somehow she has lied. Even if it is one of omission, though she thinks she mentioned it in the first few letters sent tentatively between then-strangers. So that he didn't get any expectations or his hopes high if that was what he was looking for; a relationship with full and mutual physicality. And their journey together to even get to this place they're in now has had some meandering roads. Luka the man of flesh and blood almost seems different than the one in letters ~which keep her on tenterhooks, anxious that they arrive as soon as they can, from all the foreign ports that he isn't really supposed to talk about, that instead come with APO addresses almost as familiar to her as childhood phone numbers~ even though he isn't, and that's mere imagination rearing its inconvenient head in the back of her mind. It has been a slow process. Getting to know him in bits and pieces. Having a patchwork quilt of a relationship where he's absent more than he's home. And Beth knew what she was signing up for when she chose to begin their relationship in earnest. She had been literally born to this kind of life, groomed to marry into the Navy, to be an officer's wife in the way her mother had never been. At least that last bit was according to the Admiral's often stated rants over the years.

And in the space of ~she taps her fingertips one at a time with her thumb out of view~ five years, she's finally arrived at a place where she sees that he's more than just handsome. That parts of her she thought was broken have come together and allowed her to take her first few forays into adult human attraction, but she can't say that it is entirely without reservations, and without a heft bundle of prettily strung together nerves. But none of her attempts seem to have gained any kind of traction, or at least gone in the right direction. Entirely and utterly her fault, and she knows it.

So maybe that makes her voice a little more gentle, her face softened by compassion, why she reaches out and lays her hand not on his leg, but his forearm. After all, touch never lies.

"Bein' hones'? I t'ink mebbe mos' annoying kine is how everyone seems t' make such a big deal out of it. All dese questions like...who ya doin' it wit. If ya doin' it.
