Eleven and Henry Lab scenes analysis / headcanons.
Tumblr media
So  this  is  a  repost  of  an  analysis  I  wrote  quite  a  while  back  on  the  scenes  of  Henry  and  Eleven  in  the  lab  since  the  current  fanon  take  on  that  is  that  Henry  tricked  and  manipulated  Eleven  into  removing  the  chip  from  his  neck  so  he  could  commit  the  massacre.  Which  I  personally  will  always  find  strange  because  the  canon  shows  something  completely  different  in  my  opinion  in  regards  to  what  Henry's  "intentions"  with  helping  Eleven  actually  were.  My  response  was  to  an  Anon  I  got  about  the  subject.
AS  A  NOTE  and  as  TW  for  SA  /  reproductive  abuse  /  child  abuse  etc  because  we  were  also  discussing  the  concept  of  Henry  possibly  being  Eleven's  biological  father  amidst  this.  Although  my  personal  take  on  it  will  always  be  that  I  don't  believe  Henry  had  "relations"  with  Terry,  if  Henry  is  Eleven's  actual  father  it  was  artificial  insemination  on  the  behalf  of  the  lab  against  the  knowledge  of  both  Terry  and  Henry  which  is  why  Henry  is  oblivious  and  Terry  assumes  her  boyfriend  who  had  left  to  fight  in  the  Vietnam  war  was  the  father.
Tumblr media
That  would  not  surprise  me  honestly.  It  wouldn’t  be  something  I’d  put  past  the  canon.  Its  very  skin-crawlie  honestly  but  I  think  people  are  getting  "bad  vibes"  from  the  lab  and  the  possible  experiments  there  for  a  reason, like there was def a lot of rights violating going on with the lab  and  I  just  don't  think  that  anything  like  that  would  be  outside  of  the  canon  surrounding  the  Lab  and  Brenner's  associates.  Particularly  because  Henry  implies  that  a  lot  of  the  people  work  at  the  lab  for  bad  reasons.
There  is  a  heavy  suggestion  they're  present  /  former  criminals  or  people  with  bad  things  in  their  pasts  that  are  being  exploited.  And  that  would  make  sense  given  it  would  take  a  "special"  kind  of  person  to  work  at  the  lab, not  to  mention  the  scientists  obviously  have  to  be  the  type  to  view  the  subjects  as  subhuman  in  order  to  treat  them  in  any  type  of  way,  the  lab  would  be  a  playground  for  psychopathic  personalities  and  we  know  Brenner  was  pretty  fitting  to  that, and we also know MK Ultra was the basis of this and we know where MK Ultra was hijacked from,  which  is  why  thats  my  headcanon  on  that.
( Note,  I  also  just  want  to  say  I  personally  do  not  HC  that  Brenner  assaulted  terry  personally  but  he  obviously  had  no  problem  using  her  for  his  experiments  and  then  discarding  her  after  literally  stealing  her  new  born  daughter  fresh  out  of  her  womb  so  you  know. I  may  not  HC  Brenner  as  a  r*pist  in  the  personal  sense,  but  he  def  seems  to  think  science  comes  before  human  lives  and  rights,  and  will  use,  exploit  and  abuse  human  bodies  and  minds  however  he  sees  fit  and  i  cant  /  wont  deny  canon  with  that. The  worst  part  is  he's  absolutely  the  type  who  is  out  here  thinking  hes  the  one  making  the  "difficult  choices"  and  the  "sacrifices"  for  science  /  the  greater  good,  like  bruh.  Fuckin'  Shou  Tucker  ass  man  this  one. )
But  anyway,  I   think  what  makes  it  most   believable  to  me  is  Eleven’s  powers.  Like,  as  far  as  canon  goes  it  seems  Eleven’s  powers  are  “explained”  by  Terry’s  participation  in  the  experimentation  from  Brenner - but  since  Eleven’s  powers  seem  to  be  so  much  stronger  and  I  suppose  "more  natural"  than  some  of  the  other  subjects  it  would  also  make  sense  if  they  weren't  actually  “artificially”  induced  as  is  apparently  the  case  with  a  lot  of  the  other  subjects.  Like  there  is  no  reason  for  Eleven’s  potential  to  have  been  so  great,  "equal"  to Henry’s,  if  they  were  artificially  induced  just  like  what  seems  to  be  the  case  with  the  other  subjects  who  were  very  much  shown  as  “inferior”  to  Henry  and  Eleven  power / potential  wise.  She  wouldn’t  be  a  stand-out  as  she  was,  or  thats  how  it  feels  anyway.  It  feels  like  there  should  be  a  “reason”  for  why  Henry  and Eleven  stand  apart  from  the  others.
As  for  Henry,  I’m  not  sure  I  understand  father-ness  the  same  way  as  others  if  that's  the  case.  A  father  can  be  a  lot  of  things  and to  be  fair  if  we  define  a  father  as  an  older  person  who  teaches,  protects  and  cares  about  someone  else  then  Henry  actually  did  hit  those  marks  to  me.  He  wouldn’t  have  known  it  and  I  don’t  think  Eleven  ever  actually  being  his  daughter  crossed  his  mind  once,  but  he  did  empathize  with  her  deeply  as  a  child  who  he  could  see  himself  in  more  than  many  others.  I  guess  it  really  comes  down  to  whether  or  not  you  believe  Henry  was  just  trying  to  manipulate  her.  I  personally  don’t  believe  he  was  and  as  far  as  canon  goes,  I  think  it  makes  more  sense  that  he  wasn’t  -  or  at  least  his  moments  of  manipulation  were  not  as  self  serving  as  people  think.
I  think  there's  a  lot  of  evidence  for  this  but  particularly  here  are  some  key  moments  for  me:  when  we  see  Henry  is  “punished”  for  stepping  in  and  trying  to  help  Eleven,  Henry’s  reaction  to  the  punishment  of  Two,  Henry’s  reaction  to  Eleven  offering  to  help  him  in  return  and  the  scenes  with  Eleven  and  Brenner  in  “Papa.”   Like,  for  me,  there  had  to  be  a  trigger  for  Henry  suddenly  escalating  in  his  efforts  to  help  Eleven.  If  you  think  about  it  he’s  been  there  for  twenty  years,  he’s  presumably  had  casual  contact  with  Eleven  for  about  nine  of  them  ( her  whole  life )  and  while  he  might  have  always  felt  a  sense  of  kinship  with  her  he  only  started  going  out  of  his  way  to  help  her  to  the  point  of  risking  his  own  safety  at  a  specific  point  in  time.  Henry  claims  the  trigger  was  that  he  over-heard  Brenner  and  his  associates  planning  to  “allow”  the  other  children  to  attack  Eleven  and  potentially  kill  her.  Whether  this  was  because  Brenner  saw  potential  in  Eleven  during  their  1  on  1  sessions  or  because  he  thought  she  was  falling  behind  isn’t  clear,  it  could  have  been  either.  But  we  see  this  did  actually  happen  so  Henry  can't  have  actually  been  lying  about  this.  Its  also  noted  the  cameras  were  mysteriously  turned  off  during  the  time  Eleven  was  being  attacked.
( My  personal  take  on  this,  FOR  NOW,  until  canon  gives  us  more  on  this,  if  that  does  happen  at  all,  is  that  Brenner  was  actively  trying  to  create  an  immense  power serge  and  he  was  using  Eleven,  Two  and  a  few  of  the  other  more  "promising"  test  subjects  to  do  it.  In  my  takeaway  from  canon  Brenner  didn't  care  about  the  children  like  he  pretended,  perhaps  he  had  his  favrioutes,  but  I  don't  believe  Eleven  really  became  one  of  them  until  she  showed  her  potential  and  even  then  I  don't  believe  Brenner  became  interested  in  her  outside  of  using  and  possibly  sacrificing  her  to  achieve  his  grander  goal  until  he  lost  Henry  and  the  other  children.
So  basically  in  season  1  it  was  explained  that  if  another  dimension  exists a  massive  power serge  would  be  needed  in  order  to  "open"  a  portal  to  that  world. Once  again,  I  believe  Brenner  knew  about  the  Upside  Down  and  he  knew  such  a  "power serge"  was  needed  to  "open"  this  other  dimension. He  also  knew  the  type  of  power serge  that  was  needed  could  be  achieved  through  the  psychics  and  their  powers  as  I  headcanon  he  learned  all  this  through  experiments  particularly  on  Henry  in  his  boyhood.  We  are  explained /  shown  a  similar  thing  with  the  Soviets  in  season  3.  They  were  using  a  crazy ass  machine  to  create  a  power surge  strong  enough  to  chip  away  at  and  eventually  re-open  the  gate  to  the  Upside  Down.  This  should  also  put  into  perspective  the  kind  of  terrifying  power  Henry  and  some  of  the  other  subjects  were  capable  of.
So  yeah,  anyway,  as  far  as  my  headcanon  goes  right  now  Brenner  was  planning  on  pitting  Eleven  against  Two  in  the  hopes  of  them  causing  a  power serge  great  enough  to  open  the  Upside  Down  for  him.  In  my  opinion,  at  this  point,  he  viewed  Eleven  as  disposable  and  Two  as something he wouldn't cry too much about because  even  though  Two  was  very  powerful  Brenner  didn't  seem  to  like  the  guy  that  much  and  ultimately,  in  my  headcanon,  the  only  one  of  the  numbers  Brenner  truly  placed  value  on  was  Henry,  hence  why  even  after  Brenner  took  away  Henry's  powers  he  refused  to  let  Henry  go.  He  has  a  very  creepy  obsession  with  Henry,  honestly,  but  YEAH. )  Side  note,  I  also  think  the  cameras  being  off  had  to  do  with  Henry’s  own  assault.  He  was  taken  into  one  of  the  test  rooms  and  had  the  hell  beat  out  of  him  while  Brenner  watched.  Why ?  What  where  they  doing  that  for,  it  couldn’t  have  been  ethical  or  something  you  want  to  record  for  everyone  to  see  and  we  do  know  Brenner  messed  with  the  tapes  and  removed  footage  which  seems  to  further  incriminate  him  in  this  and  bring  more  truth  to  Henry's  words.
So  what  did  Henry  say  or  do  that  made  Brenner  decide  he  needed  a  pummeling ?  Obviously  he  interfered  in  a  way  Brenner  didn’t  like.  He  might  have  even  spoke  against  Brenner’s  plan  to  let  the  other  subjects  ambush  Eleven  or,  as  is  the  case  in  my  canon,  they  were  beating  him  so  he  couldn’t  intervene  which  adds  up.  Like  while  Henry  was  going  through  this,  Eleven  suddenly  gets  jumped  by  the  other  test  subjects  who  were  let  out  of  their  rooms  for  some  reason.  Henry  can’t  be  lying  because  all  of  that  is  suspicious  and  wrong  on  so  many  levels,  and  we  know  Henry  was  occupied  at  the  time  the  other  test  subjects  were  mysteriously  freed  from  their  rooms  and  the  cameras  were  shut  off.  It  adds  up  completely  with  what  he  says  about  Brenner's  plan  to  harm  Eleven.
Eleven  didn’t  fight  back  and  survived  the  initial  attack,  and  Brenner  “punished”  Two,  further  exasperating  Two’s  hate  for  and  competition  with  Eleven  which  could  easily  escalate  things  further.  Henry  mentions  Brenner  was  manipulating  the  other  subjects  so  its  likely  Two  was  receiving  signals  to  encourage  him  to  hurt  Eleven  outside  of  just  being  shown  up  by  her.  I  completely  believe  Eleven  was  at  risk  of  being  attacked  again  and  possibly  killed.  We  have  a  moment  when  Brenner  approaches  Eleven  and  goads  her  over  the  other  children  laughing  at  her  and  mocking  her.  Who  is  to  say  Brenner  wasn't  whispering  similar  things  in  Two's  ear  to  make  him  angry  and  make  him  think  he  had  to  hurt  Eleven.  Henry seemed to literally be trying to help Eleven master her powers entirely to protect her from this.
The  canon  seems  to  show  that  Henry  tried  to  guide  her  toward  success / protect her  because  he  empathized  with  her  as  a  lonely  child  who  was  mocked  and isolated  from  others  which  we  saw.  He  straight  up  tells  her  she  reminds  him  of  himself.  We  know  Eleven  is  mostly  on  her  own.  She’s  shy  and  she  lacks  confidence.  The  other  children  make  fun  of  her.  We  saw  all  that  so  this  isn't  some  kind  of  misinterpretation  by  Henry.
Henry  empathized  with  this  and  wanted  to  help  her  with  her  powers  but  he  realized  this  was  a  mistake  because  Brenner  saw  the  test  subjects  as  lab-rats  first  and  humans  never.  No  one  was  exempt  to  this,  no  matter  how  talented  they  were.  Showing  talent  didn’t  mean  safety, especially not from Brenner  and  Brenner  makes  a  point  of  emphasizing  this  in  the  scene  where  he  “punishes”  Two.
You  can  see  Henry’s  reaction  to  this  is  one  of  fear,  discomfort  and concern.  This  resonates  badly  with  Henry,  probably  for  a  lot  of  reasons  but  we  def  get  to  see  that  reaction  out  of  him  for  a  reason.  It  backs  up  a  lot  of  things,  particularly  what  he  said  about  wanting  to  help  Eleven  but  only  making  it  worse  and  his  guilt /  remorse  for  that,  hence  why  he  seems  to  have  escalated  his  efforts  to  rescue  / protect her. In  the  test  scenes  previous  to  this  we  did  see  Henry  helping  Eleven  in  a  friendly  way  and  if  you  pay  attention  to  Brenner  whenever  he  is  in  the  room  with  Henry,  Brenner  is  noticing  Henry’s  “friendship”  with  Eleven  as  well.  He  does  not  seem  to  take  too  kindly  to  it  either  and  as  a  result  he  starts  taking  an  interest  in  Eleven  himself.
So  to  me  this  means  Henry  tried  to  help  Eleven  show  her  powers  in  a  way  that  wouldn't  harm  her and help protect her from Two  but  instead  of  this  satisfying  Brenner  like  Henry  hoped  it  only  furthered  Brenner's  interest  in  Eleven  and  the  ways  in  which  he  could  use  her  powers  for  his  own  means. This  doesn’t  seem  off  to  me  with  all  of  Brenner’s  other  behaviors  and the  characters  general  MO.
The  facts  that  I  can  see  is  that  Henry  literally  risked  his  life  and wellbeing  to  help  Eleven.  He  escalated  from  just  reassuring  her  and giving  her  tips  and  standing  up  for  her,  to  full-blown  trying  to  break  her  out  of  the  facility  and  this  was  all  directly  related  to  the  way  Brenner  was  treating  her  and  the  danger  she  seemed  to  actually  be  in.   Which  are  the  other  key  parts  in  figuring  out  whether  Henry  was  always  just  manipulating  her  or  he  was  genuinely  trying  to  save  her  like  he  says,  imo.  I  mean  aside  from  Henry’s  own  reaction  of  hurt  and confusion  when  Eleven  accuses  him  of  tricking  her, which  I  think  is  also  something  to  consider  and  that  seems  to  be  overlooked  to  me.  Like  why  did  he  react  with  such  hurt / confusion  if  he’s  an  emotionless  monster  who  planned  all  of  that ?  Wouldn’t  his  reaction  to  this  accusation  be  more  of  a  “lol  u  got  me”  instead  if  that  were  the  case ?
Henry  literally  takes  Eleven  to  a  place  she  could  escape  and  sends  her  on  her  way.  He  doesn’t  try  to  stop  her,  he  reassures  her  that  she  would  be  okay  and  not  to  be  afraid.  If  Eleven  never  offered  to  help  him  return  what  would  he  have  done ?  Stopped  her  and  told  her  not  to  go ?  Literally  all  Eleven  had  to  do  was  say  “thanks”  and  crawl  into  the  tunnel  as  Henry  instructed.  That  seems  to  be  a  huge  gamble  to  take  if  this  was  all  a  super  carefully  planned  manipulation  and  all  he  planned  to  do  was  use  her  to  facilitate  his  own  escape. Eleven  has  a  good  heart  and  she  assumed  Henry  had  to  leave  with  her  because  he  was  in  extreme  danger  himself,  which  is  the  other  thing.
Henry  had  no  way  to  know  Eleven  saw  him  being  tortured  which  is  what  ultimately  swayed  her  decision  to  help  him  back  and  he  doesn’t  make  it  about  him. Consistently  its  always  about  helping  her,  its  Eleven’s  idea  based  on  what  she  saw  to  help  him  in  return,  something  Henry  didn’t  know  about  until  AFTER he  had  already  put  HER  escape  plan  in  motion. and  of  course  he  takes  her  offer  to  help  him  because  why  wouldn’t  he ?  Theres  no  reason  he  wouldn’t  jump  at  the  offer  when  given  to  him  just  like  there's  also  no  way  he  would  know  how  she  would  react.
Like  I  said  all  she  had  to  do  was  say  thanks  and  crawl  into  the  tunnel,  its  an  insane  and  illogical gamble  to  take  if  it  was  all  just  for  his  own  means  imo.  Further,  his  reaction  to  the  offer  came  off  to  me  as  one  of  surprise  but  also  an  extreme  giddy  sense  of  elation  to  finally  be  presented  with  a  way  out  of  that  nightmare  for  himself.  Something  I  really  think  he  had  probably  given  up  hope  of  until  that  moment.  (  * I  just  want  to  say  since I wrote this the  script  has  since  confirmed  this  is  true.  The  script  described  Henry  as  surprised  and  moved  by  Eleven's  offer  to  help  him  back.  Which  kind  of  proves  he  can't  have  planned  for  Eleven  to  help  him  or  else  his  reaction  /  feeling  would  be  different. )  For  me,  almost  every  single  thing  Henry  said  to  Eleven  rings  true.  From  his  monologue  about  how  she  was  nothing  but  a  animal  to  Brenner  and  that  he  had  saved  her  by  doing  what  he  did,  to  him  telling  her  he  was  glad  she  was  born  and  that  he  believes  in  her.  It  really  seems  to  me  that  everything  Henry  did  he  did  to  help  her  just  like  he  said.
Any  manipulations  in  Henry’s  actions  seems  quite  minor  and  well  meaning  in  the  grand  scheme  of  things.  And  I  think  the  only  manipulation  /  trick  I  can  actually  see  from  Henry  is  the  fact  he  told  her  to  wait  in  the  store  room  while  he  found  a  way  out  when  he  didnt  just  do  that.  Honestly,  in  a  lot  of  ways  Henry  parallels  Brenner.  They  are  extremely  similar  in  their  behaviors  but  I  think  Henry  becomes  an  inverted  parallel  of  Brenner  as  a  twist  here  due  to  his  intentions  being  much  more  genuine  and benevolent  than  Brenner's  actually  were.
And  I  think  the  scenes  in  the  ep  “Papa”  emphasize  this.  Initially,  Eleven  believes  Henry  is  the  monster.  She  was  so  young  and at  the  time  of  their  confrontation,  Brenner  and  the  other  test  subjects  were  the  only  family  she  knew.  She  rejected  the  truth  Henry  told  her  about  Brenner  not  really  caring  about  her  but  in  every  experience  she’s  had  since  then  she  starts  to  realize  maybe  this  was  true  even  if  she  doesn’t  want  to  at  first.
In  the  episode  she  initially  accuses  Henry  of  being  the  monster,  she’s  even  angry  and  confused  as  to  why  Brenner  would  allow  someone  like  Henry  to  be  around  the  children  in  the  first  place,  but  throughout  the  ep  this  thought  process  breaks  down  and  she  begins  to  see  through  all  Brenner’s  gaslighting  and  lies  and excuses,  and starts  to  believe  that  no,  Henry  wasn’t  “the  monster,” and she wasn't the monster  at  all,  Brenner  was.  Brenner  was  the  only  “monster”.  Henry  was  ultimately  right  about  everything  like  it  or  not.  And  Eleven  directly  tells  Henry  that  he  isn't  the  monster  in  the  piggyback  episode.  The  big  tragedy  is  this  realization  and  validation  has  come  far  too  late  to  reach  Henry  now  because  overall  Henry’s  now  a  supernatural  terror  whose  on  an  absolute  mission  and Eleven’s  still  a  confused  child  who  has  stepped  up  from  being  a  lab-rat  to  a  super-hero  and it  turns  out  that's  not  the  upgrade  everyone  wants  to  think  it  is.  And  yeah.  Thats  my  analysis  on  that  thanks  for  reading  sjfkdkfd.

Logic - College Park (Album Review)
Genres: Boom Bap, East Coast Rap/Hip-Hop
Waiting for a new Logic album is equivalent to playing Russian Roulette at this point. Few artists are capable of putting out albums as consistent as Under Pressure followed by records as genuinely horrendous as Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. His last studio album, 2022's Vinyl Days, was a turning point for Logic as an artist as it marked his final album under the Def Jam label name. More importantly, Vinyl Days was a strong demonstration of everything that Logic and his associates could do right. Vinyl Days had strong lyricism, flows, features, and instrumentals. College Park is a true successor to the aforementioned record in terms of both aesthetic and purpose; albeit with better execution.
As an actual emcee, Logic is the poster boy of inconsistency. At every second, Logic is walking the line between solid delivery and cringeworthy semi-nerdcore. College Park is almost entirely based around the former rather than the latter. Although he may not seem like it upon first glance considering some of his weakest works, Logic has the ability to do some great things in regards to delivery and flow when he gets behind the mic. That being said, lyricism is his forte more than anything else. Throughout his explorations of the concept behind College Park, Logic demonstrates songwriting chops that feel matured and nuanced while still never lacking the trademark sense of light humor and self-awareness that has come to define many of his most beloved records. The lyricism here, similar to Vinyl Days, is mostly reflective of the earlier years of Logic's career as he discusses his own personal views on this point of his career. Paired with old school boom bap-influenced beats, the choice of songwriting here suits the vibe of the record as a whole. Perhaps most intriguing about the album as a whole is the last few minutes of the album closing track "Lightyear" in which Logic transitions into a more singer/songwriter based sound. Whether that was meant to be a hint towards a future record's sound or just a one-off stylistic choice, it is a moment that makes the ending of the album feel refreshing all the same. College Park was destined to be an interesting venture for Logic from the very start. The album has a direct narrative throughout its tracklist about Logic and some of his friends and fellow musicians driving to Washington DC for a show during his come-up era years ago in 2011. This story is primarily told through skits that often appear at the end of songs. As always, skits are a tricky thing here. Although they do manage to convey the story and concept behind College Park in a lighthearted but nonetheless engaging way, several skits feel unneeded and only add extra degrees of bloat to an album that arguably doesn't need to be nearly seventy minutes long. For example, the gas station robbery skit at the end of the Norah Jones collaboration "Paradise II" is neither funny nor intense and plays no important role in the actual narrative of the record, leaving it feeling unwanted at best. I digress, many of the skits are good fun even if they do get tiring upon multiple listens. The features on College Park are arguably the most consistent part of the record, as they feel more appropriate and spread out than most other lists of features found on Logic albums. It may as well be a guarantee at this point that a Logic song is going to be good if it sees him collaborating with the Wu-Tang Clan in any way. His love for the collective is obvious lyrically, and his joint with RZA on the album opening "Cruisin' Through the Universe" proves his passion through his performance. His work with Joey Bada$$, Lucy Rose, and Norah Jones (among others) throughout College Park is equally strong. Every featured artist on College Park manages to have their own identity without overshadowing anything that Logic does. College Park is the unmistakably the brainchild of Logic through and through; an impressive feat when musicians as talented as those I just mentioned make appearances on it. College Park is remarkably similar to Vinyl Days; all the way down to the color scheme of the album cover. However, Logic's latest studio album has its own distinct identity that feels equally comedic and nostalgic. While it never feels drop dead hilarious during its skits or mindblowing-ly clever in its lyrical content, College Park feels like Logic at his most honest and transparent: flaws and all.
Final Rating: 3.5/5 (Good)
Essential Tracks: Clone Wars III, Lightyear

I watched The Batman (2022) dir. Matt Reeves and here’s almost-everything I want to say about it 🦇
Note: You can disagree with me. Neither of us are wrong or right about how we perceive this movie. The sentence structure will be atrocious, I’m a little sorry. It’s also a long post. Spoilers below
• The Batman (2022) is not like the Dark Knight Trilogy (2005-2012), but it shares a few similarities. To me, the similarity starts and ends with how rooted in reality the two films are & the journey of Batman. I think the Nolan Trilogy focused on Bruce Wayne’s journey, while The Batman focused on (as the name implies) Batman’s journey.
• the sound track, the cinematography, and the overall eerie, horror-esque vibe was.. captivating? It built a distinct atmosphere, a very intentional, intriguing one. I want to find the words that explain this, but I don’t know how, yet. I’ll get there.
You just KNOW my former professors who taught me Cinema Appreciation and Film Analysis are regretting going into the field of education and teaching after seeing me describe this movie is captivating… im sorry ms. aita <2
• Robert Pattinson was a wonderful Batman. I think as a young Bat, and I think I’ll make a post about this soon. I loved the way he plays Bruce, his somewhat detached sense of the world. It’s interesting how much of Batman’s fighting style is kinda brash, but he will avoid violence if he can.
I think Bruce learns over time, how important it is for him to be Bruce Wayne during the day, so the work he does as the Bat actually matters. And I think this story shows us how it happens. It’s not just the mayor talking to him, he see’s it first hand.
• Gotham City and the Bat. I’ve always felt like Gotham city is the biggest reason why Bruce can never stop being the Bat. It’s not just his obsession with justice, vengeance, or his family. Gotham has our emo-bat in a chokehold. I also love the way they show us the city through its people.
Bruce’s faith in the city, and his almost desperate need for it to be better, to be fixed, is the bane of his existence. It is why Bruce will also never be happy, I think, but this I’ll touch on that in my maybe-all-about-Bruce post.
• Maroni and Falcone, and the (wonderful) way they’re written. I think it’s important for Maroni to be taken down at the start of the Bat’s career. Like a little absolute-point in the Bat’s timeline. I like the way they kept him in the story without showing him? It was interesting story telling.
I also think Falcone has to take over when Maroni falls, and Bruce and Falcone need to have a heart to heart, for Bruce to fully transform into the Batman. I think it’s integral to his character but I think it’s also been influenced by my love for the Nolan trilogy (maybe a little by The Long Halloween)
• Selina Kyle a.k.a Catwoman. There is only one thing I didn’t like, and it was the “Falcone is my dad” bit, but I know it’s coming from the comics and just personal preference. Zoe Kravits is easily my favourite Catwoman so far.
I think Annika as a character served as a way for us to see Selina, in the Catwoman. She’s brilliant, she’s so full of love, fiercely loyal and cares so much and so deeply. It’s why Selina and Bruce will work, as a couple and a partnership, if they choose to be partners.
As a whole, he fighting style is also very cat. I love that she used her claws, and whenever she’s beat someone up, there are 2-claw or 3-claw scratches on their face. I think that’s how she fights, in my head? I loved that she acts like a SMOL, helpless baby and then boom-boom tries to kill her biological dad. Let’s GO baby.
I def want to see more of her. I love the way she was written. I know I have more to say. MAN.
• Bruce and Selina, doomed from the get-go but ah, so good. Both of them try so hard - more in the comics, but in this movie you can see how much effort a relationship between the two will take. If they were just Selina and Bruce, they’re perfect.
But for Selina to be “herself”, she needs to be Selina Kyle who is Catwoman. And I would go as far to argue that Bruce is the Batman first, and a Wayne second. Himself, or who he really is around Selina, aren’t always going to be enough for her? Sometimes I think Selina is in love with the Bat, and Batman in love with Selina. The Bat and the Cat were never meant to last. It sucks I love it.
• the Riddler. Well written. I loved the little fucked up dude. I kept waiting for an Edward Nygma thing so it’s E.Nygma, but a Nashton is fine I guess? I like the way he was written, gave me a lot of Incel Reddit boy vibes. I know that nothing in film is a coincidence, these moves aren’t unintentional, and I like it. It’s also made it scarier, in a way. I loved how absolutely fucking eerie this movie was. I have more thoughts about the Riddler, don’t know what they are yet.
• THE JOKER CAMEO AT THE END?! Brilliant. Best kept secret. Marvel wishes they could do this!! The Secret cameo blessed me. I love the way they did it, how this joker interacts with the Riddler, the laughing. It’s either one of two things to me, Batman beat him once, or Jokers just in jail cause he’s bored of being outside and fucking around. (I can’t decide what’s better)
• Thomas and Martha Wayne.. boy, they’re getting a deep dive in the Bruce Wayne post I think. I think there’s a lot to look into here, in like how kids look at their parents, a hero’s fall from grace, a son paying for his fathers sins. Also… I’m not a fan of the whole “Martha Arkham” thing cause where are the Kane’s?? but I don’t know if it’s comic accurate (I tend to forgive things from canon cause I assume there was a reason why, so… that)
…and I think that’s it for now. These are the first few thoughts in my mind. Oh and that Battinson walks so… 🧍‍♂️ like? And that Catwoman’s mask has baby kitten ears and it’s so fucking cute. Yeah, now I’m at the end.

Who in goiky can handle horror movies the best and who can’t even get past the title screen?-🐕 anon
GELATIN AND NAILY LOVE HORROR MOVIES Naily comes over at gelatin's house to watch them sometimes I think Btw for these upcoming answers, Nate is answering them (Im just writing out what xes saying to me) cuz I am NOT a horror person at all nor do I really watch movies... but Nate on the other hand When It comes to horror movies Naily would like the more "obscure" ones, she has some kind of fascination w them cuz usually when it comes to those theyre either pure gold or very crude but that doesnt mean she doesnt like the more popular ones as well Gelatin loves sci fi horror and also stuff thats like, 80s-90s horror films that are just shitty slashers movies there for a cash grab lmao - anything thats "so bad theyre funny" Leafy and Gelatin usually like the same things but Leafy does Not like horror movies unless theyre also comedic because most of the time he just gets bored by them in the "Its not real anyway" type of way, hes that kinda person. Plus most of them r live action which shes not a fan of Cake prefers those horror movies that are I guess more "down to earth", think of those horror movies that r like "oh group of teen girls having a sleep over" and then someone gets their asses, he just likes the vibe of those. He likes older stuff a lot more (around80s to 2000s) and he doesnt rly like cheaply produced ones, he leans towards more popular stuff. The one thing he doesnt like about some movies is excessive gore, he has a high tolarance to it cuz he can tell its fake most of the time but sometimes Its just too much ykno NOW LOSER.. Loser is the complete opposite, he's like terrified by it even If she knows It knows real but It gets her anyway - as a kid she thought they were real though which is why he doesnt like em as an adult either. She still sits down to watch them with cake cuz he acts like he can handle it but give it about 10 minutes and Loser's like shaking and clinging onto cake. The gore and jumpscares get to him more, the former making him squeamish most of the time so he tends to just Look Away or Leave or Turn That Shit Off etc. Not a big fan of horror movies My addition was that I think cake would only pretend to be scared the first one or two times they watch horror movies so he can cling onto Loser HEHEH The death pact frat house occasionally has movie nights so horror movies are a thing that come up for sure. Bottle and Pie love watching them, Pillow as well but not as much. Bottle likes the more gorey shit because - to quote nate - "Shes quirky like that". Another thought by me (Certified Pie Enjoyer) but I feel like Pie doesnt actually like horror movies in the way you would expect but she LOVES picking them apart and making fun of them which can sometimes annoy others but half the time Its rly funny so Its okay. Its her way of enjoying things. After they watch movies Bottle and Pie would def discuss the movies afterwards n Bottle takes them WAY more serious than Pie does sometimes but mostly Its just for the funsies Pen acts like he can handle it but then cant fall asleep, Tree seems calm cuz he's quiet but when you look at him he's like clutching onto a pillow for dear life HAH. One of them probably sleeps with the other that night cuz theyre both scared. I COULD GO ON AND ON BUT ITS ALREADY SO LONG I HOPE U DONT MIND ANON

Hey, d'you have any French book recs? I'm trying to work on my French, and rn I have downloaded one of my favourite book series' French translations, but I figured maybe books already written in French might work better? Also have you read the Ranger's Apprentice series? 1/2
RA's def flawed - the books' narration does like to point bright arrows at the protagonists' intelligence, and the last few books def have the tone of 'old white man trying to write feminism', although at least he's trying? - and it's aimed more to the younger side of YA, but it is still a very fun series, and I can ignore the flaws fairly easily, at least partly due to nostalgia? This rather long lol but I'm wordy.
I'll start with the second question: no, although every time the series is brought up I have to check the French title and go "oh, right, I've seen these books in stores". But I've never purchased or read them. It sounds like something I probably would have enjoyed as a teen but I just missed the mark, and these days I'm trying to drown myself in queer books, so that probably isn't happening.
As for your first question, geez, I haven’t read a French book in years, so this is gonna skew middle grade/YA, though that may not be so bad if the point is to learn the language. I will also say that as a result, these may read a little outdated.
I'll put it under a cut, even if Tumblr has become really bad with correctly displaying read mores. Sorry, mobile crowd.
It's also likely that old readers of the blog will have seen me talk about most of these. I don't feel like going through old posts.
One last thing: while I was curating this list I took the time to make a Goodreads shelf to keep track of those.
The Ewilan books by Pierre Bottero
Tumblr media
(It's a testament to how long ago I read these books that these are not the covers of the edition I own, and I can't even find those on Google. I'm settling for a more recent cover anyway since it'll make it easier to find them, presumably)
There are at least three trilogies (that I know of) set in the same world.
The first trilogy is essentially an isekai (so, French girl lands in parallel fantasy world by accident) with elements of chosen one trope, though I find the execution makes it worth the while anyway.
The second trilogy is a direct sequel, so same protagonist but new threat, and the world gets expanded.
The third one is centered around a supporting characters from the previous books, and the first couple of books in it are more her backstory than a continuation, though the third one concludes both that trilogy and advances the story of the other books as well.
Notably these books have a really fun magic system where the characters "draw" things into existence. It's just stuck with me for some reason.
A bunch of stuff by Erik L'Homme
I have read a lot of this man's books, starting with Le Livre des Etoiles.
Tumblr media
They also skew towards the young end of YA, arguably middle grade, I never bothered to figure out where to draw the line. They're coincidentally also using the premise of a parallel world to our own (and yes, connected to France again, the French are just as susceptible of writing about their homeland), but interestingly are set from the point of view of characters native to the parallel world.
It also has a very unique magic system, this one based on a mix of a runic alphabet and sort-of poetry. I'll also say specifically for these books that the characters stuck with me way more than others on this list, which is worth mentioning.
This trilogy is my favorite by Erik L'Homme, but I'll also mention Les Maîtres des brisants, which is a fantasy space opera with a pirate steampunk(?) vibe. I think it's steampunk. I could be mistaken. But it's in that vein. It's also middle grade, in my opinion not as good, but it could just be that it came out when I was older.
Another one is Phaenomen, which was a deliberate attempt at skewing older (though still YA). This one is set in our (then-)modern world and centers a group of teens who happen to have supernatural powers. I guess the best way to describe it is a superhero thriller? If you take "superhero" in the sense of "people with individualized powers", since they don't really do a lot of heroing.
...I really need to brush up on genre terminology, don't I.
The Ji series by Pierre Grimbert
Tumblr media
This one is actually adult fantasy, though it definitely falls under "probably outdated". It is very straight, for starters, and I'd have to give it another read to give a more critical reading of how it handles race (it attempts to do it, and is well meaning, but I'm not sure it survives the test of time & scrutiny, basically).
If I haven't lost you already, the premise is this: a few generations ago, a weird man named Nol gathered emissaries from each nation of the world and took them to a trip to the titular Ji island. Nobody knows what went down here, but now in the present day, someone is trying to kill off all descendants from those emissaries, who are as a result forced to team up and figure out what's going on.
I'm not going to spoil past that, though I will say it has (surprise) a really unique magic system! I guess you can start to piece together what my younger self was interested in. Which, admittedly, I still am.
Once again, this one also has a strong cast of characters, helped by rich world building and the premise forcing the characters to come from many different cultures (though, again, I can't vouch for the handling of race because it's been too long).
The first series is complete by itself, though it has two sequel series as well, each focusing on the next generation in these families. Because yes, of course they all pair up and have kids. Like I said: very straight.
A whole lot of books by Jean-Louis Fetjaine
Tumblr media
OFetjaine is a historian, and I guess he's really interested in Arthurian mythos especially, because he loves it so much he's written two separate high fantasy retellings of them! I'm not criticizing, mind you, we all need a hobby.
The former, the Elves trilogy (pictures above) is very traditional high fantasy. Elves, dwarves, orcs, a world which is definitely fictionalized with a pan-Celtic vibe to it. The holy grail and excalibur are around, but they're relics possessed by the elves and dwarves with very different powers than usual. Et cetera.
Fetjaine also really loves his elves (as the titles might imply), and while they're not exactly Tolkien elves, there's a similar vibe to them. If you like Tolkien and his elf boner, you'll probably like this too. And conversely, if that turns you off, these books probably also won't work for you.
This series also has a prequel trilogy, centered around the backstory of one of the main characters. I...honestly don't remember too much about it, but I liked it, so, there you go, I guess.
I said Fetjaine did it twice. The other series is the Merlin duology, which, as the title implies, is a retelling of Merlin's story. Note that Merlin is also in the other trilogy, but it's a different Merlin; like I said, completely different continuities and stories.
This one is historical fantasy, so it's set in actual Great Britain, and Fetjaine attempts to connect Arthur to a "real" historical figure...but, you know, Merlin is also half-elf and elves totally exist in Brocéliande, so, you know. History.
Okay, that's probably enough fantasy, let me give some classics too.
L'Arbre des possibles et autres histoires - Bernard Werber
Tumblr media
Bernard Werber is a pretty seminal author of French sci-fi and I should probably be embarrassed that the only book of his that I read was for school, but, it is a really good one, so I'll include it anyway.
It's a novella collection, and when I say "sci-fi" I want to make it clear that it's very old school science fiction. It's more Frankenstein or Black Mirror than Star Trek, what we in French call the anticipation genre of science fiction: you take one piece of technology or cultural norm and project it into the future.
It has a pretty wide range of topics and tones, so it's bound to have some better than others. My personal faves were Du pain et des jeux, where football (non-American) has evolved into basically a wargame, and Tel maître, tel lion, where any animal is considered acceptable as a pet, no matter how absurd it is to keep as a pet. They're both on a comedic end, but there's more heartfelt stuff too.
L'Ecume des Jours - Boris Vian
(no cover because I can't find the one I have, and the ones I find are ugly)
This book is surrealist. Like, literally a part of the surrealist movement. It features things such as a lilypad growing inside a woman's lungs (and, as you well know, lilypads double in size every day, wink wink), the protagonist's apartment becoming larger and smaller to go with his mood and current financial situation, and more that I can't even recall at the moment because remembering this book is like trying to remember having an aneurysm.
It is also really, really fun and touching. Oh, and it has a pretty solid movie adaptation, starring Audrey Tautou, who I think an international audience would probably recognize from Amelie or the Da Vinci Code movie.
I don't really know what else to say. It's a really cool read!
Le Roi se meurt - Eugène Ionesco
Ionesco is somewhat famous worldwide so I wasn't even sure to include him here. He's a playwright who wrote in the "Theater of the Absurd" movement, and this play is part of that.
The premise of this play is that the King (of an unnamed land) is dying, and the land is dying with him. I don't really know what else to say. It's theater of the absurd. It kind of has to be experienced (the published version works fine, btw, no need to track down an actual performance, in my humble opinion).
The Plague - Albert Camus
You've probably heard of this one, and if you haven't, let me tell you about a guy called Carlos Maza
youtube
I'm honestly more including this book out of a sense of duty. The other three are books I genuinely liked and happen to be classics. This book was an awful read. But, um. It's kind of relevant now in a way it wasn't (or didn't feel, anyway) back in 2008 or 2009, when I read it. And I don't just mean because of our own plague, since Camus's plague is pretty famously an allegory for fascism, which my teenage self sneered at, and my adult self really regrets every feeling that way.
Okay, finally, some more lighthearted stuff, we gotta talk about the Belgian and French art of bande dessinée. How is it different from comic books or manga? Functionally, it isn't. It really comes down more to what gets published in the Belgian-French industry compared to the American comics industry, which is dominated by superheroes, or the Japanese manga industry, which, while I'm less familiar with it, I know has some big genre trends as well that are completely separate.
The Lanfeust series - Arleston and Tarquin
Tumblr media
This is a YA mega-series, and I can't recommend all of it because I've lost track of the franchise's growth. Also note that I say "YA", but in this case it means something very different from an American understanding of YA. These books are pretty full of sex.
No, when I say YA I mean it has that level of maturity, for better or worse. The original series (Lanfeust de Troy) is high fantasy in a world where everyone has an individual magical ability but two characters find out they're gifted with an absolute power to make anything happen, and while it gets dark at times, it's still very lighthearted throughout, and the humor is...well, I think it's best described as teen boy humor. And it has a tendency to objectify its female characters, as you'll quickly parse out from the one cover I used here or if you browse more covers.
But still, it holds a special place in my heart, I guess. And on my shelves.
The sequel series, Lanfeust des Etoiles, turns it into a space opera, and goes a little overboard with the pop culture reference at times, though overall still maintains that balance of serious/at times dark story and lighthearted comedy.
After that the franchise is utter chaos to me, and I've lost track. I know there was another sequel series, which I dropped partway through, and a spinoff that retold part of the original series from the PoV of the main love interest (in the period of time she spent away from the main group). There was a comedy spin-off about the troll species unique to this world, a prequel series, probably more I don't even know exist.
Les Démons d'Alexia
Tumblr media
Something I can probably be a little less ashamed of including here.
Some backstory here. The Editions Dupuis are a giant of the Belgian bande dessinée industry, and for many, many years I was subscribed to their weekly magazine. That magazine was (mostly) made up of excerpts from the various books that the éditions were publishing at the time; those that were made of comic strips would usually get a couple pages of individual scripts, while the ongoing narratives got cut into episodes that were a few pages long (out of a typical 48 page count for a single BD album). Among those were this series.
For the first few volumes, I wasn't super into this series, probably because I was a little too young and smack dab in the middle of my "trying to be one of the boys" phase. But around book 3 I got really invested, to the point where I own the second half of the series because I had canceled by subscription by then but still wanted to know more.
Alexia is an exorcist with unusual talents, but little control, who's introduced to a group that specializes in researching paranormal phenomena, solving cases that involve the paranormal, that kinda stuff.
As a result of the premise, the series has a pretty slow start since it has to build up mystery around the source of Alexia's powers, but once it gets going and we get to what is essentially the series' main conflict, it gets really interesting.
Plus, witches. I'm a simple gay who likes strong protagonists and witches.
Tumblr media
Murena
Tumblr media
There was a point where my mtyhology nerdery led me to look for more stuff about the historical cultures that created them, and so I'd be super into stuff set in ancient Rome (I'd say "or Greece or Egypt" but let's face it, it was almost always Rome).
Murena is a series set just before the start of Emperor Nero's rule. You know, the one who was emperor when Rome burned, and according to urban legend either caused the fire or played the fiddle while it did (note: "fiddle" is a very English saying, it's usually the lyre in other languages). He probably didn't, it probably was propaganda, but he was a) a Roman Emperor, none of whom were particularly stellar guys and b) mean to Christians, who eventually got to rewrite history. So he's got a bad rep.
The series goes for a very historical take on events, albeit fictionalized (the protagonist and main PoV, the titular Lucius Murena, is himself fictional) and attempts to humanize the people involved in those events. Each book also includes some of the sources used to justify how events and characters are depicted, which is a nice touch.
It's also divided in subseries called "cycles" (books 1-4, 5-8 and the ongoing one starts at 9). I stopped after 9, though I think it's mostly a case of not going to bookstores often anymore. Plus it took four years between 9 and 10, and again between 10 and 11. But the first eight books made for a pretty solid story that honestly felt somewhat concluded as is, so it's a good place to start.

How have you come to read Berserk? Do you remember what your thoughts and impressions were while reading this story for the first time?
ty for your interest!
I actually watched the 97 anime first. I watched it with a friend like a decade ago and I don’t remember those first impressions very well because a lot of weed was involved lol. But I do know I thought I’d be bored by it and ended up surprisingly invested and engaged. I of course shipped griffguts and I was definitely shocked at how close to canon it was, with scenes like Casca’s cave monologue and Griff’s torture chamber monologue.
Then I found the Band of the Hawk scanlation and read that bc I wanted more, though I often found it confusing. I actually just checked and realized I still have a little wordpad doc I wrote notes in back then while I was reading it. So here’s some highlights:
- I adored both Guts and Griffith, and I called Guts “Gatts,” thanks to the scanlation.
- I found their trauma backstories really fascinating since I’d never rly seen that with male characters before.
- I hated Puck a lot lol :(
- From around the Lost Children arc: Hell, he's doing the same as Griffith did - building a mountain of bodies. I predict that he will eventually use the Behelit, and his sacrifice will be... Griffith! Because enemies can also be the most important person to you. But then he will turn it down. Also if he takes Jill, she'll be the Casca to his Griffith. Waaaiiit... if they explicitly state that it's a possibility Gatts'll use the Behelit and get all demon-y... well, obviously the temptation will be soon, and he'll say no. Not a climax as such. Just an event. Damn. Well, unless a central theme of the rest of this is Gatts' temptation to monsterize himself.
well hey I called Guts getting his own Casca parallel follower, I just didn’t know it would be Farnese.
- I was seeing Casca and Griffith parallels apparently, but I was being vague so I don’t know what parallels exactly. Maybe just the ‘shell of former self’ thing.
- very exasperated by how no man can interact with Casca without trying to rape her.
- went ham during hill of swords ofc but surprisingly not at Guts forgetting his urge to kill lol: OH MY FUCKING GOD THIS CHAPTER IS CALLED REUNION ON THE HILL OF SWORDS OMFG REUNION OMG OMG OMGOMGOMGOMGOMOMGOMGOMOGMOGMOGMOMGOD OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
- bb me still knew what was up re: Griff: He's not sociopathic, he's just so singleminded that he'll do anything for his goal. I was going to say that he's so single minded that he doesn't care what he does for his goal, but that's not true - he DOES care, he just does it anyway.
- I was getting bored with the Millenium Falcon arc and didn’t care about any of the new characters aside from kind of liking Serpico and absolutely hating Isidro. I didn’t say anything about Farnese but I do have a vague memory of getting excited that there was another female soldier character followed immediately by disappointment that she can’t actually fight. So if I didn’t like her back then that’s probably why.
- I was a little disappointed when Guts got the berserk armour because fight scenes aren’t as cool when the protag has a magic power up. I was right tbh.
- I seem to have quit writing around the beach chapters. I think I did actually drop it around there probably, I’d already taken one break and I was forgetting stuff and generally losing the thread of the story iirc.
also I believed Griffith was very likely to get redeemed at the end? Here’s my “reasoning” lol:
Consise, laid-out reasoning why Griffith will be redeemed. He'll probably die right afterwards, but he will certainly sacrifice himself in an act of redemption. 1. The slug-dude did so for his daughter in an act of foreshadowy self-sacrifice. 2. Skull-knight dude tells Gatts that he perhaps has the power to stop fate or whatever. 3. Griffith's whole friendship speech that throws everything in motion. It's super important, but one aspect that is truly important is that for him to call someone a friend, he has to be an equal - following his own dream, etc. When he becomes Femto, this gives Gatts the motivation he needs to get real. If Femto/Griffith eventually sees Gatts as his equal, this metaphorically equals friendship. Of course this will manifest in a respectful arch-enemy thing, once Femto learns to truly fear Gatts, but the metaphor is still there and it will come out when he eventually DOES sacrifice himself because he can't bear to lose his one equal/bff/etc. It will be very Final Gameish. 4. The only man who made Griffith forget his dream is Gatts. Gatts has a huge amount of power over Griffith in regards to his desire to rule everything. 5. Portions of the story are still seen from Griffith's point of view - indeed, a humanized Femto - and this gives me great hope that during these bits we'll see more greyscale characterization. 6. Also in a weird way they kind of have a child together apparently. Idk. 7. Based on the whole sequence before The Golden Age, Gatts gets dark. And ruthless. Mirroring Griffith's transformation, just a bit. 8. Also the fact that Gatts has a freaking
I didn’t fail to copypaste it properly, I just never finished that sentence. But it was probably “behelit” if I gotta guess. Final Game def references the never-made 70s Doctor Who episode where the Master was going to sacrifice himself to save the Doctor, fyi, not the Sherlock Holmes story. Me lowkey comparing every hero/villain dynamic to Doctor/Master when I was 20 is presumably why I assumed they’d get to a respectful arch nemeses vibe lmao.
I guess tbf I wasn’t talking about a redemption arc so much as a humanizing death lol, I just wouldn’t call that a redemption now. I don’t completely disagree with my past self, though I def had some dumb ideas.
It sucks that I dropped it before all the good parts of the MF arc tbh, Griffith vs Ganishka and Guts and Zodd teaming up etc. I wonder what I would’ve thought of it.
Anyway yeah lol, ty for asking and prompting me to find this lol, it was fun to reminisce!
Oh also if you want to see my more recent and technically third impressions lol I did start this blog just to liveblog my more meta-y re-read of Berserk. Here’s the tag for that in chronological order.

the last time--post-portal. def reminds me of the scene where catra saves glimmer and apologizes to adora
sad beautiful tragic-- break up sadness
the lucky one--more adora becoming she ra/learning the truth of mara
i almost do--catra & adora missing each other on opposite sides of the war
come back...be here--^^
state of grace--end of/post s5
1989 (2014)
out of the woods--i mean..........those ladies entered the whispering woods in s1 on a stolen skiff and did not leave until the end of the series
all you had to do was stay-- aside from the title... “let me remind you this was what you wanted // you ended it// you were all I wanted //but not like this”. def catra yearning
i wish you would--all of the lyrics. all of them
bad blood--warrants no explanation
this love-- “when you’re young, you just run// but you always come back to what you need”......................the defense rests
clean--s4 adora accepting and coming to terms w catra’s decision
wonderland-- really captures the betrayal/hurt of s1 catradora
you are in love-- adora POV// subtle moments leading up to realizing she loves catra
new romantics--”we need love, but all we want is danger//we team up then switch sides like a record changer”
catra’s personal memoir reputation (2017)
i did something bad--a title that could (unfortunately for everyone else) summarize a large majority of catra’s decisions. the song is very justified/righteous anger/revenge. basically a ‘fuck you, i know i’m bad’ & embracing that. reminds me of her kicking sw & hordaks ass (the rebellion could never) and her just...war criming it up in the crimson waste
Look What You Made Me Do-- void!catra void!catra void!catra void!catra void!catra void!catra--
getaway car--could see this from adora’s perspective to catra solely for the whole leaving/betrayal bit. but might be more fighting for double trouble & catra’s relationship
dancing with our hands tied-- i mean...lyrically. everything. but esp ‘I'd kiss you as the lights went out//swaying as the room burned down//I'd hold you as the water rushes in//If I could dance with you again”
dress-- “i dont want you like a best friend”. period. end of sentence.
this is why we can’t have nice things--s1 promise feels. the lack of forgiveness, the shade. u know.
lover (2019)
cruel summer-- “i scream for whatever it’s worth, i love you--ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard?” the heart. the longing. the ‘i dont want to keep secrets just to keep you’
the archer-- ‘who could ever leave me, but who could stay?’ + the rest of the song is v fitting for both catra/adora
afterglow--making up, admitting wrongs--catra perspective
miss americana & the heartbreak prince--idk just the narrative of the song reminds me of them
it’s nice to have a friend--whooooh boy this post is not about glimbow but this song works equally as well for them
daylight--enjoy the healing
lover--enjoy the healing pt 2
death by a thousand cuts-- warrants 0 explanation
folklore (2020)
finally
the 1-- definitley adora POV, reminiscing on maybe what they could have been. maybe in a world where catra never redeemed herself or they never reunited and adora watched her friends pair up/get married/build lives w each other, she might realize there is a whole in her heart. a part that’s missing and cant be explained, but she feels it every time she looks at glimmer&bow.
cardigan-- feels like catra writing a letter to adora. reflecting on the feelings of hurt and betrayal after time has passed and the anger fades
exile -- lowkey the premise of my fic but. ‘i’m not your problem anymore/ you were my crown/ now i’m in exile seeing you out’ catra was raised to feel like she was adora’s problem to fix. she feels cast aside by her for a majority of the series etc
my tears ricochet-- “i didn't have it in myself to go with grace//and you're the hero flying around saving face//and if I'm dead to you why are you at the wake?//cursing my name, wishing I stayed//look at how my tears ricochet” tswift explained this in the doc about how no one can hurt you like your best friend turned enemy. so i think in that sense this song works from adora’s perspective--but there’s so much bitterness and anger that i feel like it fits more from catra’s POV
seven-- “love you to the moon and to saturn//passed down like folksongs//the love lasts so long” i feel like this is so young/child adora and her feelings of protectiveness over catra. their bond through trauma and abuse
august--lmaoooooo i know. ok i KNOW what the deal is. i KNOW that cardigan, august and betty are a narrative story and really there are 3 POVs--james, betty & august. but i will do with that what i please. i just see catra’s pov from this song just as much as i see it for cardigan. her losing adora/feeling like adora doesn’t want her back or will choose other ppl over her.
this is me trying--can fit adora’s need to be everything for everyone/fear of failure--leading to burn out. also works for what i assume how catra’s redemption arc continued post s5. progress isn’t linear and this can show both of them struggling to recover from abuse
invisible string--if u strip out the imagery of taylor and her mans then sure
mad woman--i MEAN...is this not catra’s villain origin story? so often she was just poked/kicked/provoked into continuing down the dark path. not always by adora but regardless.
epiphany-- ‘with you i serve, with you i fall down’ reminding me of them both fighting/practicing/training together pre-s1 as well as them finally teaming up
betty--betty betty betty. the worst thing these two have ever done is what they did to each other. i see it more catra to adora, but it can go either way. gotta admire catra’s range for fitting into the role of betty, august + james... who else is doing it quite like her?
peace-- adora to catra. she can never not be she ra. is that enough for catra?
hoax--def more of a catra POV
evermore (2020?)

Haikyuu (Genshin AU) Karasuno ver
So previously I posted about Mr Love in Genshin universe, so now’s Haikyuu!! I’ll be doing Karasuno’s edition first so enjoy~
Other anime series: [Mr Love] Haikyuu teams: [Nekoma], [Fukurodani], [Seijoh]
Second years and First years under the cut.
____________
- DAICHI - Vision: Geo Affiliation: Mondstadt, Knights of Favonius Weapon: Claymore
Daichi is easy for me to visualise him as a member of the Knights of Favonius. Heck, his status would be one of the Cavalry Captains along with Kaeya. We’ve seen how strong and passionate he is. He can be intimidating but is actually a softy. He has younger siblings and would often take them out to Springvale or any places around Mondstadt.
He’s always cautious too! He’ll bring his claymore with him and is always prepared to protect the city and his loved ones. Like at one time, he’s with his younger siblings near Windrise. His siblings decided to visit the Anemo Archon statue to send their respects when suddenly they were attacked by the Hilichurls.
Daichi would summon a protective shield and fight against the hilichurls. This may also happen when he goes out on a patrol or escort with his team where they got ambushed by the Fatui or the stinky Ruin Guard or Ruin Hunter.
He’s a reliable person anyway and is always willing to help out. His quick senses and instinct allows him to spot the enemies quickly thus, that is why I think he would be very fit to be part of the Knights.
- SUGAWARA - Vision: Electro/Dendro Affiliation: Mondstadt, Knights of Favonius Weapon: Catalyst/Bow
I had a hard time thinking about what Suga’s weapon and vision would be. But most importantly, I see him as an alchemist, working alongside Albedo and Sucrose. Now, onto his vision;
If he has electro vision, he would probably had a blast on torturing the baddies with the potions that has electrical substance in them or even electrocuting them. He might even create a smol sidekick like how Fischl has Oz. A talking crow. But instead of using a bow like Fischl, he’d be a catalyst like Lisa.
However if he has dendro vision, he might do various experiments on plants. Using his knowledge on alchemy, he can create lots of ointments or medicine for those in need. He can even detect the poison in the plants and use them as his advantage to fight the enemies. So here, I’d see him using a bow. His arrows varies from poisonous tips to non. If he’s hunting, then he uses the non poisonous arrows. When he’s fighting, he’d use the other.
Oh, and his skills may also include healing~
- ASAHI - Vision: Pyro/Hydro Affiliation: Mondstadt, Knights of Favonius/Dawn Winery Weapon: Sword/Claymore
Asahi... I see him being affiliated in two places, the Knights and the Winery. His vision, either pyro or hydro. His weapon, either sword or claymore.
Now, if he’s with the Knights, I see him wielding the claymore like Daichi and has pyro vision. The reason I chose pyro as his vision is because, despite his timid personality, he can be scary and intimidating whenever he deem it fit. His burning passion to protect his beloved ones and his city symbolises his bravery.
On the other hand, if he’s with the winery, I see him working with Elzer (Diluc’s assistant). He would handle the accounting when Elzer’s not around. He’s mainly at the grape field. Using his hydro vision to water the plants. But I think he would be more to being Diluc’s assistant or partner. He would be at the tavern whenever Diluc goes there or when the latter told him to be there in his stead.
As for his weapon with hydro vision, he’s either using the sword or claymore. If he wields a sword, his fighting style would be a mix of Kaeya’s and Xingqiu’s. But if he wields a claymore, it’ll be like how he fights as a knight.
- TANAKA - Vision: Geo Affiliation: Mondstadt, Knights of Favonius Weapon: Claymore
Tanaka definitely has a geo vision and wields a claymore.
He’s strong and keeps a positive mindset that’s very hard to break. He knows what to do if he’s down. His positivity is as strong as his skills of mastering the geo vision which targets him as a formidable opponent.
As for his weapon of choice, at first, it’s just because he wants to look and be manly. According to him, “A man must wield a strong weapon.” But his mindset changes when he meets Kiyoko. His show off attitude fades as he matures. He vows to protect not only Kiyoko, but everyone. Thus, how he really mastered his techniques. He can even be on the same level as Daichi if he really works for it.
- NISHINOYA - Vision: Electro Affiliation: Mondstadt, Knights of Favonius Weapon: Sword
I may or may have not made a reference of his “Rolling Thunder” for his vision. With his vision being electro, he can finally make his favorite skill be a reality. Like his role as a libero, he’s more of a support. Like Zhongli, his ultimate skill has more critical damage.
As for his weapon of choice, he’d go with sword. His fighting style would be similar to Keqing but with more aggression. Despite so, his fighting style is smooth and quick. He can summon a shield as a primary skill that attracts magnetic force of the enemies. So he’s def a reliable support.
His affiliation tho, he’s more like a trainer. He only goes out on missions when they need him or when they’re short of knights. But he’s reliable in any way.
- ENNOSHITA - Vision: Hydro Affiliation: Mondstadt, Cathedral/Medic Weapon: Polearm
Ennoshita’s canon occupation is a Psysical Therapist, so he’s very much likely to be a medic. Either part of the Cathedral or he’s a travelling doctor hailing from Mondstadt.
He’s a good fighter as well so he may even come along with the knights on a heavy missions as the medic and a support. Ennoshita is also a good guide, so the junior medics are all well trained in terms of health as well as fighting.
He may be a support but his basic attacks contain lots of damage and his ultimate skills allows the fellow knights to instantly heal and provide damage increase. His basic attacks are similar to Durandal from Honkai Impact 3rd, which is her stab throw on the enemies. I’m sure Ennoshita is strong enough to swing a Mitachurl if he dares.
- KINOSHITA -  Vision: Cryo Affiliation: Mondstadt, Dawn Winery Weapon: Bow
Okay.. Kinoshita here has lots of character improvement. From being timid and anxious to a positive guy. But I don’t see him being with the Knights. He’s more of a business type, he might be one of those people at the Winery who are able to fight.
Idk why I chose cryo for his vision, but he just has the face of a character with cryo vision. As for his weapon of choice though, considering his big character development, Archery is a sport/activity that really trains your patience and aims. So seeing how much he focuses to improve on volleyball, he can excel fighting with the bow. I see that his fighting style would be very similar to Childe.
- NARITA - Vision: Pyro Affiliation: Mondstadt, Dawn Winery Weapon: Sword
Honestly, I don’t know much about Narita but I’m using the fact that he’s close friends with the other second years. I can definitely see them working together when they fight the baddies.
With Noya’s electro, Ryuu’s Geo, Ennoshita’s hydro and Kinoshita’s Cryo, they can counter the enemies and destroy the stinky Ruin Guards and Ruin Hunters along with the Fatui baddies. And Childe
As for his weapon, I see him wielding a sword. His fighting style would be like a mix of Kaeya and Xingqiu.
- HINATA - Vision: Pyro/Anemo Affiliation: Mondstadt, Outrider Weapon: Bow/Sword
Okay, don’t come at me cuz he has the same voice as our cutie bard, Venti. But I really see him having anemo vision than pyro. Like have you all seen how he literally flew??
So, firstly, if he has anemo vision, He’d actually master the vision and can be as strong as Jean. But he’d wield a bow like Venti. Now, he can work well with Amber as an outrider and can provide healing as well as huge damage when combined with other elemental visions. His fighting style would be a mix of Amber and Venti. Another thing, I kinda view the two characters be the main role models to Hinata when he wants to master his anemo vision.
Secondly, if he has pyro vision, he’d use a sword instead. Hinata’s flexible but at the same time, reckless. So he’s like Bennet in a way. But the two would actually be good friends and would train together. Maybe if they’re lucky, they’d get Diluc to be their mentor to control their pyro vision.
Side note, I chose pyro as one of the choices is because of his name. As for anemo, Venti is one of the reasons, but mainly how Hinata is like when he improves on his volleyball skills and his positive vibe.
- KAGEYAMA -  Vision: Pyro Affiliation: Liyue (former), Mondstadt, Outrider Weapon: Claymore
Okay, Mr Blueberry here is definitely blessed with Pyro vision. I had this idea from his personality; easily angered, overconfident, passionate and so on. At first, his overconfidence and proudness of getting his vision made him lose control and burned a field at Liyue. Thus, he was being looked down upon his former friends.
Now that he’s in Mondstadt, he wanted to be part of the knights. But his overconfidence made him lose control once again and he was sent to be trained as an Outrider instead. That’s where he met Hinata. The two clashed so much that they had to be lectured by the Grand Master Varka.
Like Tanaka, he wanted to look cool by wielding the claymore. As he improved and mastered his vision skills, he truly accepted that being blessed with the vision is not only something to be proud of but also to protect others as well. He’s definitely one of the formidable opponents to the Fatui.
- TSUKISHIMA - Vision: Hydro/Dendro Affiliation: Mondstadt, Knights of Favonius Weapon: Polearm
Saltyshima here, is definitely part of the alchemist with Suga. Like his senpai, he’s sadistic as heck. So he’d actually inflict poison or other dangerous substances when he fights with the baddies with either his hydro or dendro vision.
If he has either hydro or dendro, he’d definitely find a way to create medicine or potion for Ennoshita and creating dangerous experiments to use on the baddies such as poisons, explosions and so on. Even with his polearm, he’d have different types to bring with him; the one inflicted with danger or the regular one for hunting.
He’d actually make Hinata and Kageyama as his guinea pigs other than the hilichurls or slimes.
- YAMAGUCHI - Vision: Anemo Affiliation: Mondstadt, Dawn Winery Weapon: Claymore
Mr Gucci here, I see him working with Asahi at the winery. Together with Kinoshita and Asahi, they’re often out to protect the winery. With the seniors’ skills, Yamaguchi can double the damage with swirling of his anemo vision.
As for his vision and weapon of choice, we have yet to see a character from Genshin to wield a claymore with anemo vision. So it’s interesting to visualise Yamaguchi to have that image. He can make use of his skill on every swing of his claymore which makes him quite strong.
If you have any suggestions for Mr Gucci here, do share them~
_____________
Alright, I know I left out the managers and Ukai and Takeda, but I’ll put them into different post. I’ll post the next team soon~ I’d love to hear everyone’s opinion on the characters in genshin universe so do share them.

Kdrama recs Part 1
Hullo and welcome to the kdrama life @camsthisky! The following list is not in any particular order, other than the fact that I start with a more rom/com vibe and head toward more romantic/action or action. All the following kdramas are set in the modern day, and part 2 of my recs for you will be either darker kdramas set in present day or historical dramas.
Let the list begin!
Tumblr media
1. Strong Woman Do Bong Soon:
Do Bong Soon is a v smol woman who has super strength and who wants 1. To create her own video game 2. Get her police officer crush to return her affections. Which like, police officer is kinda cute but he ain’t that special. Bong Soon winds up becoming a bodyguard to Ahn Min Hyuk, the extremely rich, kinda spoiled, ridiculously extra CEO of a gaming company who does not like the police for secret reasons, and sadly does not have a good relationship with his family. (He a lonely boy underneath everything.) Min Hyuk finds out about Bong Soon’s powers, is in TOTAL awe of her, offers to train her in fighting, and literally falls head over heels for her.
The caveat with this show is there is a subplot or two that annoy me, BUT I just use the 10 second skip button and it is totally worth it because the romance is super cute—SUPER CUTE (also I have a list of favorite actors and Park Hyung Sik is def on it—one minute he is an adorkable, blushing bby the next he can be intense and sad)
Tumblr media
He cute
2. Her Private Life:
Hello fake-dating!! Ryan Gold (an adoptee who didn’t live in Korea for a while) is a former artist who stopped painting because he couldn’t deal with his Stendhol (?) syndrome (among other traumas). Deok Mi is the classy art curator of a famous museum who definitely does not have any secrets she wants to keep from the world—well, other than the fact that she is the number one fangirl of kpop idol, Cha Shi-an (who also appreciates art) and has a major crush on him. Ryan becomes director of the art museum and there is a whole thing with getting Shi-an involved in an art show.
Following this and a series of unfortunate events a false rumor starts that Deok Mi and and Shi-an ARE dating. It’s a little complicated to summarize, but basically what you need to know is that Ryan and Deok Mi become a fake couple so there won’t be a scandal for Shi-an or violence done to Deok Mi by rabid fangirls. I enjoy the fake-dating trope a lot, and how it becomes real for both of them! The leads are played by Kim Jae Wook and Park Min Young, who both have incredible range. Lots of soft moments in this one! Good kisses, a scene where the faves bake together, and also Ryan wears a lot of deep v-neck shirts and jackets which is an attack on me personally.
The show also contains a bit of angst, which I LOVE. Hand-holding becomes an important theme 😊
Tumblr media
RYAN NO
3. Crash Landing on You: Rich South Korean heiress/fashion designer Se-ri accidentally winds up in a North Korean village, and really REALLY wants to go home. Mostly because there are no scented candles or spa-like bathtubs in the vicinity, but also because she could easily disappear into a NK jail and never return. A North Korean captain named Ri Jeong Hyeok finds her and decides not to turn her because, one, he’s a good guy who doesn’t want to turn an innocent person over to what might be her death, and two, turning her over might get his four underlings in trouble for reasons. Said underlings are his family, basically, and they are a deLIGHT. One is an argumentative proud sort who likes to drink and to feel important and who tries to provoke (and gets provoked by) Se-ri at every opportunity, one is a lover of banned South Korean dramas, one is a 17 year old bby who misses his mom, and one is the silent but most loyal follower of the captain.
Besides all these people, there are two other characters (including a surprisingly wise conman) who become faves and major players in the plot.
There is a great mix of humor, romance, found family, and angst, and I love it very much. A few things don’t go the way I want them to near the end, but a bit of imagination and fanfic can fix anything
ALSO I FORGOT THE CAPTAIN GETS SUPER SULKY FROM TIME TO TIME AND IT IS HILARIOUS
Tumblr media
Show of hands, who thinks they will meet again
4. Are You Human Too: A FAVORITE SHOW OF ALL! TIME!
What do you do when your husband dies and your evil mega-rich father-in-law takes your son away from you and keeps you from seeing him ever? Well, if you are scientist with more genius than positive coping methods, you build yourself a robot son who looks exactly like your real son. Great solution, am I right?
Nam Shin III is the name of my favorite robot son, played by the inestimable Seo Kang Joon. He is the purest bby you will ever meet, being designed so that he never lies and so that he will immediately go to hug anyone who cries. He seems quite a contrast to the bitter human Nam Shin, who hates his gilded prison life, hates his Grandpa, and tries to sneak away from his right hand man, Secretary Ji Young Hoon, his only friend in the world. The girl in the show is Kang So Bong, an ex-UFC fighter who was so badly injured she had to quit. She is at first a bit jaded and mercenary because of her past, but she has a golden heart that just needs to be reminded of its existence.
Not going into details to avoid spoilers, but everything upends when the robot Nam Shin has to take the place of the human Nam Shin. The show is a soft, funny, angsty exploration of what it means to be human, with some good found family throughout. The character development is phenomenal, and the connection between So Bong and Nam Shin III is *chef’s kiss*. I just want to give a shout out to Seo Kang Joon who plays a duel role like you wouldn’t believe, to SKJ’s smile, to the soundtrack, and to the character of Young Hoon, a loyal, steady, and self-sacrificing secretary that we do not deserve  (gosh tho he looks good in blue!)
Tumblr media
Look at my robot son getting a long-looked for affirmation! (his lil smile!!!
5. W: Two Worlds:
This show unique because it  meta as HELL! Oh Yeon Joo is a junior doctor and the daughter of a webtoon artist whose big hit, W, is coming to a close. Much to her surprise, she gets pulled into the world of the comic where she encounters and saves the main character, Kang Chul, a former Olympic shooting champion who was blamed for the murder of his entire family, and whose sole desire is to find the real killer. It’s a good romance between them, and I also love Kang Chul’s relationship with his hyung, which, tho it is not always a main focus, is present and wonderful. Kang Chul himself is both intelligent and adorably bratty, charismatic and angsty, soft and fierce, and he is one of my favorite kdrama characters for sure.
As for the meta, the show does a fantastic job exploring the rules of the comic world, of how one can enter and leave, the importance and power of main characters and supporting characters, and the purpose of an author. There is always another twist coming, and it is just so much fun!
Tumblr media
UM SIR PLS POINT THAT ELSEWHERE
6. Healer:
I watched half this show and never realized that the female lead is played by Park Min Young, same actress as in Her Private Life. Someone had to tell me lol! She’s just so good at playing different people. In this show, she is Chae Young Shin, a reporter for a celebrity tabloid who has big dreams of becoming a famous reporter who investigates stories that actually mean something. She is a bit quirky, very cute, very brave, and probably one of my favorite female leads. She lives with her dad above his coffee/teashop bakery and is friends with all the ex-cons he has defended while doing his other job of lawyering.
Anyway this show is more of a romantic/action drama. To get an idea of the titular Healer, picture what you would get if you took some of Batman and Nightwing’s aesthetics (wearing black, hanging out on rooftops, punching people, flipping around, etc) and put them into a night courier who likes to watch National Geographic and dream about one day going off to an island where he can live all by himself for the rest of his days because oh yeah he is a loner whose only friend is an older woman who sets up his jobs and whom he has never actually met.
There is also an older reporter that Young Shin looks up to, the fun tabloid office where she works, a heck lot of mystery surrounding some tragedy involving a group of reporter best friends/found family back in the 80’s/90’s, and of course both members of the OTP have childhood trauma that has made them who they are today. One of my favorite things that happens in the show is that Healer has to go undercover for a while, Clark Kenting it up in Young Shin’s tabloid office, which overnight becomes a real news agency for reasons.
The action is LOTS of fun, and the romance is really soft and cute, and better still, when there is a misunderstanding or something that gets in their way, they almost immediately talk about it and resolve issues. They TRUST each other and give the benefit of the doubt where many tv couples would break up or get in big fights. I find it (plus the character development) very refreshing.
Tumblr media
I couldn’t find a gif of my favorite fight sadly. This will have to do
7. Lawless Lawyer: This has Lee Joon Gi. Watch it.
Just kidding, there are many other reasons to watch the show, but it is true that Lee Joon Gi is one of my favorite actors. The man has phoenix eyes, a jawline that could cut silk, diamonds, you name it, and such a deep well of emotional acting that it literally kills me when his characters rage/weep/love/etc.
Anyway, in this legal thriller/romance/action drama, LJG’s character Bong Sang Pil is a beautiful, very extra ex-gangster/now lawyer who opens his own office, ready to fight villainy and avenge his mom with the law or with his fists, whichever is more useful at the time. He has a right hand man named Manager Tae and recruits a bunch of thugs as his minions, and they all become a weird sort of family as the show goes on.
Ha Jae Yi is a quiet badass lawyer who has no time for sexist idiots and gets her license suspended for smacking one of said fools. She gets recruited to assist Sang Pil, and they find their goals align as both their mothers were destroyed by the villains.
Speaking of the villains? EXCELLENT acting by them all, like they need to go down obviously, but you can’t help but be in awe of a few of them or even get attached to one or two in a weird way. Props to the show for having one of the best female villains I have ever seen
Tumblr media
What an icon
Tumblr media
Here you get two gifs of him
Tumblr media
Sorry I needed to make it a magical three lol

Tune in next time for historical dramas and modern dramas that are a bit darker!

Ghost’s Tobias Forge talks about being sued by Nameless Ghouls, spurned by the Vatican and immortalized in plastic effigy
Tumblr media
When it comes to Swedish bands, Americans tend to think of pop icons like ABBA, black metal acts like Bathory, or the odd alt-rock band like The Cardigans, after which we stop thinking about them at all.But that was before the band Ghost began its slow yet inevitable ascent. Hailing from Linköping, a city in Sweden known for its ornate cathedrals, the bandmembers concealed their secret identities beneath elaborate costumery, a time-tested tradition fostered by bands like Kiss and The Residents.
Occupying centerstage was Papa Emeritus, a skull-faced character fond of ghoulish corpse paint, a high-pointed hat and ornate papal vestments decorated with upside-down crosses. Standing stock-still at the microphone, his face frozen in a miserable scowl, the singer appeared, for all intents and purposes, to be hovering at death’s door or just beyond it. His bandmates, unceremoniously referred to as “Nameless Ghouls,” wore hooded robes and black masks, a look that soon began showing up at European cosplay conventions.
While this combination of corpse-paint, national origin and grinding guitar riffs led some critics to liken their sound to Swedish death metal, the keyboard-heavy liturgical vibe of Ghost’s early music arguably owed more to classic Pink Floyd.
That’s especially true of “Secular Haze,” the breakthrough single from their 2013 sophomore album Infestissumam. Following its release, the band put out the Dave Grohl-produced If You Have Ghost, a five-song covers EP that includes the Roky Erickson song of the same name, as well as renditions of Depeche Mode’s “Waiting for the Night” and, appropriately enough, ABBA’s “Like a Marionette.”
Tumblr media
But 2013 also had its share of disappointments, including the ascension of Pope Francis, who was elected on the fifth ballot, thwarting Papa’s hard-fought and highly publicized campaign for the position.
The rest is history, of a sort. Following a series of European dates with Metallica, Ghost are now embarking on an arena tour of their own that will include an Oct. 1 concert headlining the Broadmoor World Arena. Their single “Cirice” won the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, while their most recent album Prequelle and its single “Rats” were respectively nominated in this year’s Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song categories.
Along the way, the band has gone through a succession of Pope characters —  Papa Emeritus I, Papa Emeritus II, and Papa Emeritus III — who have since been replaced by the far more kinetic Cardinal Copia, who has more of a mafioso image and hyperactive stage presence. All four frontman roles have been played by Tobias Forge, whose identity was outed two years ago when four former Nameless Ghouls filed a since-dismissed lawsuit alleging unpaid wages.
Ghost have also undertaken a series of musical transitions that became especially obvious with last year’s Prequelle, a concept album that employs the 14th-century black plague as an allegory for our current troubles. While Forge hasn’t fully abandoned his band’s past sound, tracks like “Rats” veer toward the ’70s arena-rock sound of Def Leppard, Foreigner, and even Journey, with whom the band toured last year.
In the following interview, Forge holds forth on a wide array of subjects, including litigious ex-Ghouls, the Swedish anti-vaccine movement and his alter-ego’s forthcoming immortalization — alongside legendary artists like Prince and Jean-Michel Basquiat — as a Funko Pop! figurine.
Tumblr media
Indy: Let’s begin by talking about the concept behind your most recent album. It opens with that really creepy version of “Ring Around the Rosie, ” which is always a good way to start an album about the bubonic plague. Was there any specific reason why you chose that theme at this particular point in history?
Tobias Forge: Well, I think there are important lessons to be learned from all chapters of history. The plague was an epidemic that wiped out half of Europe, and, we can assume, traumatized the Asian population as well. And back then, people in general were uneducated, they were superstitious, they were religious, they believed in hocus-pocus. So it must have literally felt like the end of the world was just going to happen tomorrow. And that is always an interesting concept. Because we know now that it was not the end of the world. You know, mankind persevered. So while I believe in environmental issues, and that there are a lot of things that can be done in order to make the world a better place, I also think there’s not as much doom and gloom as it may appear.
So what would you say are the lessons we can learn from that period?
I guess the most simple and most obvious one is that we can debate forever — all day and night — about what happens after we’re dead. But I can promise you that we do not know. We can hope for there to be an afterlife, or 72 virgins, or whatever else is on your wishlist. But there’s no way of knowing. And anyone who tells you that they know, they are lying because they want something from you, or they want you to believe in something. And so I think your time and your energy will be better spent trying to embrace life instead of being wary of death. Because life is fragile, and you don’t know if you’ll have another one.
And then there’s this myriad of human instincts that comes into play when apocalypse is near, and one of them is who’s to blame for this, that, and the other. Back in the plague days, as I said, there was this predominance of religious people who believed in hocus-pocus and were pretty uneducated and pretty fucking dumb. They believed that female sexuality was to blame for essentially God abandoning mankind. So while you had people dying off in droves, you also had these people killing women because they were good-looking or, in one way or another, enticed some sort of sexual arousal. And that was obviously the work of the devil, and while they were alive, they would interfere with the survival of mankind. But unfortunately, those kind of very uneducated and outright stupid people are still well-represented in the world, and it’s very important that we address that.
Since you’ve researched and written about all this, I’m curious what you think about your country’s decision, back in March, to ban mandatory vaccinations.
Oh, that’s a good question, but I don’t really have a good answer. But I do think that there is a dichotomy between what the population might need, and what a pharmaceutical company needs for its own benefit. I’m trying not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but about 10 years ago, there was an outbreak of a flu, and companies would have entire offices vaccinated. And, on first glance, it’s like, “That’s great how society and all these bosses and corporations came together.” And I’m aware that the number of people that actually came down with it was not that many. So was that because of this shot, or was it because maybe the threat wasn’t as great as they were saying it was? Because, more often than not, there’s an economic incentive somewhere for someone. But not being a biologist nor a chemist, I don’t know anything about stuff like that. So, as I said, I don’t have a straight answer.
On a happier note, Funko’s Papa Emeritus II doll came out last month…
Yes, speaking of monetaries. [Laughs.]
That’s right. And I have to say, I’m really impressed by how realistic it is, especially in the way it just stands there and doesn’t do anything. How does it feel to be immortalized in that way?
I don’t really see it as that. I mean, when I sort of regard anything that we have done, even a photo, I don’t necessarily think of it as me being in that photo. I’m just sort of detached from the character on the visual side, which is to my benefit, actually. I’m way too vain, so I would have had a problem if it was my face that we were working with. So having the sort of official visuals of Ghost is actually quite liberating.
I understand that you started out playing in punk and death metal bands. Was Ghost the first time that you got to indulge your pre-The Wall Pink Floyd side?
No, I have played non-death metal in other bands before. But when Ghost started taking shape, I think I just found a way to write songs that sort of tick both boxes — one box being melodic pop-rock, or whatever it is, and the other being sort of metal. It felt playful, and it felt intuitive and progressive, for lack of a more fitting word. Whereas in the past, it’s like the metal bands were metal, and the rock bands were rock, and they didn’t combine the two. So I definitely found it more effective, and way more fun, to do something in between. Your stage presence is way more kinetic these days, although pretty much anything is more kinetic than standing in front of a microphone and scaring people. But you’re reaching the point now where the choreography in a video like “Rats” is borderline Michael Jackson. Is that the result of having more personal confidence these days?
Yeah, I would definitely say that. There are critics of the band who feel that the less animated version in the beginning was better and more ominous, and that we should still be embracing that. But a lot of the cryptic nature of Papa I was due to being constrained by the costume and the size of the stage.
And now we’re playing bigger places, where there’s way more ground to cover and there isn’t a single cord onstage that you can trip on, so of course you have to move around, right? I mean, if we were onstage now for two hours with that sort of unanimated version we were doing back in 2011, people would be demanding their money back. It’s just part of growing. You can see the same thing if you look at a clip of the Rolling Stones from 1964. Mick Jagger is Mick Jagger, but he’s definitely not the Mick Jagger that you see in 1969 or 1972. It takes time to build that confidence and find your own way of moving around.
I know you campaigned really hard for the pope’s job back in 2013. And I think a lot of your fans were really disappointed when the smoke came up the chimney and it turned out you didn’t get it. Do you think that your losing out to Pope Francis was the result of Vatican corruption?
Sure, most things going on there are because of corruption anyway. So I’m sure that was one of them. Or it might also have been my lack of faith — or my lack monetary means at the time — that prohibited my exaltation within the ranks of the Vatican.
And finally, I have a question about that lawsuit. Do you think that if you’d given names to your Nameless Ghouls, they would have been less vindictive?
You mean, if I’d given them names instead of making them completely anonymous? Probably, I guess. It’s hard to say. Because with most people that are drawn to the performance stage, you do so with a certain inclination to be seen and appreciated. So maybe if our positions were reversed, I would have felt the same way. Until seven or eight years ago, I really wanted to be famous, so my idea of being in a band was definitely different from what it turned out to be.
I’ve been in charge and working on this full-time, nonstop, for 10 years. Other people in Ghost would work a few hours every day, and then, during the four months between tours when I was making a record, they weren’t really doing anything that had to do with Ghost. And since I was representing the band at all of the meetings, I was getting pats on the back and feeling like what I was doing was good. Whereas, if you had nothing to do with the day-to-day stuff, you maybe didn’t get the pat on the back that you needed in order to feel fulfilled in life. So, you know, maybe if they had gotten their name on there, and could at least be recognized in the street, maybe that would have changed things. But on the other hand, I’ve played with others who didn’t give a shit about that happening.

1: There is a definite difference between my mother’s abuse, which was a result of her untreated trauma, and the ex-best friend’s abuse. I don’t know if he had a personality disorder, but I know he planned his abuse and was fully cognizant of his actions and their effect on me, whereas my mother was impulsive and unplanned and she often apologized, and it’s clear she actually cares about me.
Yeah, I’ve noticed this too. Some people are impulsive and some really aren’t, and the way they harm people are often different. Impulsive people get mad. People who aren’t impulsive... well, they may not know exactly what they’re doing, or may be in thrall to an ideology. But it’s not the same kind of just... GRARGHH. It’s happening with some awareness.
@soulvomit said: This really feels like people are fighting over whose rights matter more, abusers or their victims. I don’t like the idea that in Tumblr culture, mental illness is an abuser season pass. And ffs it’s not like lots of NPD and BPD aren’t CAUSED by being an abuse victim.
Some of the rhetoric around “narcissistic abuse” really sounds like the YouTubers are talking about ANY mean person, which I think is where “there is just abuse” comes from.
But I get this vibe too sometimes, especially when people refuse to describe what their symptoms actually are and just say “I’m working on myself.”
Okay... but it kind of matters what about yourself? To use things not related to pds, it matters to me more if you’re “working on” your kleptomania vs “working on” your resting bitch face. The former affects when I’m going to let you hang around me (when I can keep an eye on you) and when I’m not (when I can’t.) The latter is just kind of okay whatever.
So when people go “I have Scary Disorder but I ONLY want you to see my progress!” while suspiciously hiding PROGRESS ON WHAT, I def get a “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain” vibe.

g, h, k, m?
G: Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?
Usually I write an outline first (bullet points or just badly written sentences, no dialogue), then try to do it start to finish but when I'm stuck at one part I just skip it and write another first- although usually I have enough wips at the same time that I just go to another one if that happens, so the fics are still mostly written start to finish
H: How would you describe your style?
I would love to know that! Do I have one? XD I feel like it adapts a lot to whatever book or fanfic I've read before. Some of my fics are dialogue-heavy, very real-time, some focus on inner monologue, some describe a lot, sometimes I stick to one POV sometimes I don't... All very feelings based without too much plot but that's just most of fanfic as a genre I think.
K: What’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with?
Not a fanfic but I remember years ago writing an original short-story about a woman killing a girl in a carcrash, then getting pregnant and the girl's mother is the nurse or sth and aborts her foetus without consent so they're 'even' (I'm vry pro-choice, there was just def no choice involved in that story)... Idk what my brain was thinking. Nothing good.
So that's the only creepy thing I've actually written down, but I just noticed it says 'come up with' instead of written, so- uuuuh a lot. I have this gigantic headcanon-crossover-multiverse, I've recently started actually writing some fics for it on ao3, but nothing too angsty- although one angsty af thing that I've started writing is that one entire universe just shattered (too much time travel, it's a long story), leaving everyone in it not just dead but never existing, even the plane of death of that universe is gone. The only survivor is one little girl who was in a different universe at the time, now she lives in a world where her family still kind-of exists, and there's another little girl very similar to herself..... I have some ideas to make it more angsty and give it some coraline vibes but I think I'll stick to mostly hurt/comfort for what I'm writing atm. I have loads more angsty ideas so do let me know if anyone wants to read those, but for now imma stop spamming!
M: Got anything on the back burner that you’d care to share?
That entire headcanon verse I already talked about... (lucyverse/lverse after a former main character in it) There's a lot of Harry Potter, twilight (I was 11 ok? Also by now everything and everyone there is too ooc to be recognized as twilight anyways), Lord of the Rings, Marvel, doctor who, star trek,... And everything is queer in some way <3
Apart from that some not fanfic stories that idk yet whether I'll fanfic-ify them and post them on ao3, mostly one about an underground society split into basically the bad guys ™ who want to see the planet burn and everyone die with loads of kinda brainwashed soldiers and their own mash-up language bc they never stay in one place for long, good guys (or that's what they think they are) who basically try to save civilians but often die in the process & recruit a lot of these civilians for their own purposes... And during the story two more groups develop, the Revenge and the Silver, basically the ones that just kill for personal reasons and the ones that don't just use defensive tactics anymore. Also featuring: technology to look like other people, so civilians that join a group to fight can seem to stick around when really someone like an analyst takes their place, also good to stay close to everyone's resources; a lot of sci-fi treehouse, underground or under-snow bases and transportation systems; traitors, double-agents, friendship, love-stories, loss and a lot of confusion.
I also have some more ideas for my 666 Good Omens series on ao3! And of course more Podfics coming up :)
Thanks for the questions, I really appreciate it!
My ao3 is lilolilyrae, same as here :)

SO here’s a handful of hc’s with no particular relation to one another.
-- jeralts lowkey that dude from dodgeball who throws a wrench an tells u ‘if u can dodge a wrench u can dodge a ball’. can’t imagine him being as intense as that, maybe, but like...he def gives off a “YOU KIDS HAVE NO UPPER BODY STRENGTH! STREET SMARTS!” vibe. anyway, what im saying here is, he probably gave byleth like a whole lotta firsthand experience and training lol. *drops a hammer by accident, bends over to pick it up* Y-yeahh....STREET SMARTS.
-- this is sort of a bigger one and one tht i wanted to supplement with caps from supports and canon dialogue but i dont really care to atm, but, (i fold my hands together) ferdinand can definitely be interpreted as a person with autism and theres a lot of evidence to support my reasoning. also im partial to believing so bec of personal reasons. but. ANYWAY. take into consideration his difficulty to read social situations and properly respond to them like...every time he talks to his classmates; difficulty interpreting the tone / body language of his classmates and professors; strong affinity and fixation on historic events and recounting them / fixation on minutiae of weapons, weapon development, armour, and independent histories surrounding each of the former (which greatly strays from the ‘noble etiquette’ that the other students r necessarily taught and trained to know; like, its clearly a very big interest for him that goes beyond just ‘having’ to know it as a noble). like i think its easy to mistake a lot of what he says pre-timeskip as his huge ego impeding everything but i don’t think thats entirely a fair read of his character; like yea that plays into some of it, of course, (even tho i think theres reason to question just how big his ego is in the first place. ie., i dont think its that simple, given how insecure he is, but i digress), but licherally in 90% of his supports ppl dont get angry bec hes talking abt things that concern even himself its more like frustration with how he cant entirely ‘read the room’, as it were, lol. and coupled with that! he has a large amount of trouble understanding ‘what’ he does wrong when he annoys people; which, again, yeah you can probably just chalk up to ‘oh he doesnt pay attention to the ppl he talks to bc hes so full of himself’ which isn’t an invalid interpretation of his character but i think that it misses the mark just a little. if anything, i think that ferdinands biggest flaw is that he pushes his own methodology and ways of thinking on others before he comes to understand their side of things (but never fails 2 apologize and try to come from a more empathetic / understanding point of view after the matter...anyway, im getting away from myself lol). like i could go on in greater detail abt the other points ive made but at this point im like...does n e 1 care, is it just me reading this, who thinks this hard about a certified himbo named ferdinand. i really wish i didnt.
-- i have a metric tonne of thoughts about dedue and his family pre-duscur but this post is already getting so long but tl;dr i feel like having been the son of a talented blacksmith, he’d know a lot about the finer things re: weapons and smithing, and see the refinement of them and the artistry in making them but i feel too like that side of smithing is sort of stained for him now. in a lot of ways dedue is a person who values practicality, too, like why would you want a beautiful weapon, a thing of death and instrument of war, it’s almost like it glorifies the tool that kills us; weapons honed in beauty almost belie their meaning, and is that a good thing or a bad thing, or is that simply a thing? i think it’s unfair, though, to solidify so much of his personality in a tragedy that happened. he probably respected his father and admired the skill and discipline that hailed from being a blacksmith, but clearly dedue values artistry more so than such practical vocations. he likes gardening and cooking and art and beautiful things and it’s actually really saddening that he’s classed into this stereotype of ‘gentle-but-stern-faced-giant’ bc its so much more than that. anyway stan talent, stan dedue.

WIG REVIEW: AVENGERS - ENDGAME
Tumblr media
You guys can you believe I saw a Marvel movie within like 5 days of its release? I DID IT! AND NOW I CAN WRITE A LOT OF SPOILERS - READ ON ONLY IF YOU HAVE SEEN THIS 3 HOUR MARVEL OPUS TO ITSELF! But what about the wigs? OH GURL. LET’S DISCUSS.
Tumblr media
We begin in the Mid-waste (I think?) where Hawkeye has been taking some time out of the fight and hanging by a sleeping tree, Bran-style (oh get ready for a lot of GoT crossover comments as I saw this right after the Battle of Winterfell episode and I might get my nerdy details conflated). Anyhoo, did you know that Hawkeye is married to Linda Cardellini? Is she just the supportive wife in everything? Side note: this fact might have existed in an earlier MCU movie. To be fair, I have seen MOST MCU movies (except Thor 2 and Spider-Man and I’m not correcting that) and only saw the other ones like once so I was going into this movie like most of America: vaguely confused about former facts and really exhausted about where this 3 hour movie was about to take me. ANYWAY, Hawkeye’s entire family vanishes like at the end of Infinity War and ugh I see what you’re doing Endgame: this movie is gonna be a BUMMER.
Tumblr media
Iron Man of course lightens the mood with some cute banter with Nebula but also: they’re fully about to die in the space void and did RDJr lose a lot of weight or is this just that Marvel technology they used to make Chris Evans look spindly in the first Captain America? Anyway, things are looking BLEAK but then our girl Captain Marvel shows up and saves the day.
Tumblr media
Back on earth, the Avengers are really bummed out about half the population being gone (but not so bummed out that ScarJo and “Best” Chris Evans haven’t taken some time to get haircuts - they look great!) But no time for  hair maintenance talk: Brie Larson is ready to go back to space! Also her hair looks good! This movie was made before Captain Marvel and it looks like they just used her real hair and it’s so much better than her wig in that movie.
Tumblr media
Anyway, to space! Wait, now Brie is wearing a wig. UGH. Dammit, space! However, I think this is ScarJo’s real blonde hair (a more natural look than her blonde bob wig seen in Infinity War) and what a long strange trip it’s been since Black Widow’s first perm to her mall hair in Age of Ultron and beyond. Thank the lord for this lewk.
Tumblr media
So the (remaining) Avengers land on whatever planet Thanos is living on now and apparently he’s using old Avengers costumes as Scarecrows? Ok I know we’re supposed to hate this guy but he’s all for population control, gardens, AND now recycling are we sure we hate him? The Avengers definitely still hate him and after learning that he destroyed all the jewelry he spent all of Infinity War finding, they are PISSED. Thor is so pissed he kills him! Which is a super hot-headed thing to do and is basically as bad as “worst” Chris Pratt’s behavior with Thanos in Infinity War and will these alpha males ever learn??? How are they gonna reverse this whole half of the population missing thing now?
Tumblr media
Spoiler (haha these are all spoilers!): THEY DON’T. FIVE EFFING YEARS PASS. And in real movie time, at least like 45 minutes? In which we’re supposed to believe that Black Panther (and other notable Avengers but mainly Black Panther) are going to remain dead. GET ON WITH IT MOVIE. Even more damning: Black Widow is now a sad sad lady making sad sandwiches alone and with THIS HAIR LEWK. I was so damn happy for ScarJo to be wigless and THEN THIS. WHAT IN OMBRE HELL. I think (?) what we’re supposed to think is happening here is that she’s so damn sad that she’s failed at hair maintenance and let her blonde highlights grow out into this mess? Here’s the thing, this wig is actually fine - it looks like real hair - but with A TERRIBLE DYE JOB WHY UGH.
Tumblr media
Speaking of new lewks, ScarJo still skypes with the remaining Avengers (bless her heart!) and Captain Marvel went ahead and got THIS HAIRCUT WHAT. I guess the internet can stop talking about how much she needs a scrunchie? I think that this is actually truer to her comic book self but also is giving me all the Lilith Fair vibes (IN A GREAT WAY!) It is still a bad wig in a man wig way (the back taper is a mess) but you’ve gotta love the 90s gelled sideswept bangs for pure nostalgia.
Tumblr media
Speaking of nostalgia! Ant-Man is back from the quantum realm and damn am I happy to see Paul Rudd (ALWAYS). He is shocked to learn that five years have passed while he was gone (this storyline is very Flight of the Navigator) and goes to find his now teenage daughter even tho he looks exactly the same (tho this would be true regardless - Paul Rudd doesn’t age). However, she’s all alone in her house with no Judy Greer or Bobby Cannavale in sight and does this mean they’re vanished or just not in this movie? Is this daughter being raised by Michael Pena now? Also why isn’t he there? EVERYONE IS IN THIS MOVIE I DEMAND ANSWERS.
Tumblr media
So anyway, Paul Rudd is all: why don’t we just time travel through the quantum realm and get those damn jewels and fix this whole Thanos situation? Best Chris and ScarJo are in, but Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer are the real pros at this whole quantum realm thing but are definitely vanished (as is Evangelline Lilly) so they go find Iron Man since he’s smart, right? Unfortunately, he is now living in a cabin by a lake and has a daughter (mazel! but this is def gonna throw a wrench into the time travel thing). Also Gwyneth is around looking tanned and vaguely ginger. Her wig is basically a more expensive, highlighted version of Nicole Kidman’s wig in Big Little Lies which is to say: MUCH BETTER BUT STILL PRETTY SHITTY. There is also a “joke” (?) about Gwyneth reading a book about composting which I think was supposed to be a Goop dig but honestly: WE DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THAT THIS MOVIE IS ALREADY SO LONG CAN WE JUST GET TO SAVING BLACK PANTHER AND THE OTHERS?
Tumblr media
Iron Man def is like: dudes I’m not time traveling - I’m gonna do this whole dad thing WHICH IS FAIR so they go find the like #5 smartest person they know: DR. HULK. There are no pictures of this (that I could find) but Bruce Banner is now living life just AS the Hulk (but not an angry one) so he’s basically a bulky green guy in glasses which is fine but where does he buy those huge cowl sweaters? Asking for myself. Also ScarJo finds Hawkeye in Tokyo being some sort of hooded vigilante with a fauxhawk and guyliner and jeez someone is not dealing well without Linda Cardellini.
Tumblr media
Also not dealing well? THOR! #2 Chris is off in Asgard living life with the best supporting characters from Thor: Ragnarok (TAIKA WAITITI 4EVR) and LETTING HISSELF GO. Oh also, Tessa Thompson is there too being a fisherman (?!?!?!) even tho she’s an effing valkyrie how did she get this job?!?! But I have to give full credit to Chris Hemsworth for fully embracing the deglam life here and for the next several hours of this movie. DEGLAM THOR IS EVERYTHING.
Tumblr media
However, the wig is obviously terrible. ZZTop beard aside, the wig is these weird dreadlock tendrels which I’m guessing Thor wouldn’t have had time to maintain between playing video games, drinking beer, and eating pizza. Side note: I was really disappointed that he wasn’t eating Billy’s Pan Pizza (Lisbeth Salander’s #1 food choice in Sweden through all of those terrible books) which I actually tried in Iceland once and spoiler alert: original flavor INVOLVES HAM. Just saying: the devil’s in the details. Anyway, Thor and Iron Man decide to give this whole time travel thing a try (why not?) AND YES ONCE REASSEMBLED, IRON MAN’S FIRST POINT OF BUSINESS IS MAKING A BIG LEBOWSKI JOKE.
Tumblr media
Iron Man somehow whips up some time travel gps bracelet and holy shit all of the Avengers movies are literally about jewelry. Then it’s on to making some sweet new time travel suits, Hawkeye gelling up that fauxhawk, and away we go to the quantum realm! Nothing bad can happen!
Tumblr media
First stop: the first Avengers movie! OH GOD I SEE WHAT THEY’RE DOING HERE. The MCU literally made a plot where they could journey back to all the other MCU movies like a greatest hits tour and THIS MOVIE IS ENDLESS. This also involves journeying back to the ghosts of wigs past AND GURL I’M SHOOK. I guess I have to give credit to the MCU for wig consistencies - these wigs are as shitty as the originals! - and I guess they saved a lot in the already nonexistent wig budget. Also TILDA EFFING SWINTON IS THERE. This cast, dudes. Dr. Hulk and Tilda have a whole Back to the Future (which they make fun of in this movie, btw and I wasn’t here for it) discussion about time travel that I pretty much zoned out on until Tilda was just like eff it: here’s the jewelry you want, you seem pretty chill now, Dr. Hulk.
Tumblr media
Oh and Tom Hiddleston’s shitty Loki wig is back! Jesus Christ this wig. Also, Robert Redford is back? How do I not remember him being talked into the MCU?? Anyway, the jewelry Iron Man and Best Chris were looking for is DEFINITELY snatched by Loki so they have to figure out a new time travel scenario.
Tumblr media
Oh and Best Chris and Iron Man totally made up after being at odds for the last 2-3 Avengers movies. Also what do we think the hairspray budget was for these two? There is also a LOT of talk about Best Chris’s ass in this movie (they literally refer to it as America’s Ass) and I feel like this could very much be its own movie with maybe some added Best Chris badass twitter wars. Just saying.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, back in olde timey Asgard circa Thor 2, RENE RUSSO IS BACK (also Natalie Portman LOLOL everyone is in these movies). However, Sir Anthony Hopkins is definitely not wasting time on this nonsense and: fair. Also omg this wig on Rene. GURL. I don’t know what GoT prostitute dayplayer they stole this from but regardless: it’s a mess. Also apparently, Rene is about to die (I didn’t see Thor 2) and Deglam Thor is a MESS about it (also still very much a drunken mess also). He almost effs up the plan by going and crying on his mom (don’t worry - Bradley Cooper in his best work to date as Rocket Racoon got the jewelry!) And Rene tells Deglam Thor it’s ok to not be who he’s supposed to be an just be HIM which is very good advice OMG I LOVE RENE RUSSO.
Tumblr media
So speaking of parents, Iron Man decided to go find some Infinity Stones in the 70s where his dad, John Slattery is! Apologies for the quality of this picture - it’s the best I could do. Anyway, John Slattery was made for period piece witty repartee tho his man wig (like all man wigs) is a friggin’ mess. He and Iron Man have some fairly emotional dialogue despite the fact that John Slattery doesn’t know that he’s talking to his son and also someone refers to RDJr as Mungo Jerry so I was really down with this whole section of the movie.
Tumblr media
OH AND MICHAEL DOUGLAS IS THERE (again apologies for photo quality). What Marvel does best is face deaging technology (I still demand this be used for more 80s movies Michael Douglas wasn’t able to make at the time) but what Marvel consistently does worse is: wigs, specifically man wigs. WOOF. Regardless, they got all the jewelry they needed from the 70s! Moving on!
Tumblr media
Over in Thanos town (probably what it’s called), nice Nebula is reunited with her former shitty self and also her sister. Jeez this whole part of the movie is family reunions. Anyway, Gamora’s wig is still a Hot Topic mess. Also a mess: Nebula let Thanos into the whole time traveling jewelry snatching heist which will definitely ruin everything.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, over by the cliffs of sorrow (also definitely official name, probably), ScarJo and Hawkeye and their upsetting hair looks are trying to get that one piece of jewelry that can only be gotten with human sacrifice, which they somehow had forgotten since Infinity War when Thanos sacrificed Gamora to get it. Maybe they just weren’t that tight with Gamora and forgot this? Anyway, the most important thing is that ScarJo gave herself these highlight braids which make this whole look slightly better but it’s still really bad. Also bad: one of these characters has to die! In the end it’s ScarJo I think because she doesn’t have a Linda Cardellini to go back to (or 3 kids) but I don’t really like what the MCU is implying here about the value of single ladies but regardless: goodbye ScarJo and your wig! You are probably better than this whole mess anyway!
Tumblr media
Anyway, all the (remaining) Avengers time travel back to present day (aka 2023 just go with it) and everyone is so stoked that they got all the jewelry but then bummed when they hear about ScarJo. Side note: I forgot to talk about Iron Man’s highlights and feathered lewk. It’s upsetting! Moving on! Linda Cardellini calls Hawkeye which means this whole time travelling thing worked and they brought back half the population and also most importantly probably Black Panther so go team! But before we can talk to Linda Cardellini, Thanos crash lands into the Avengers HQ AND DAMMIT NEBULA.
Tumblr media
So then everyone is somehow transported (?) to Thanos town aka Fightsville which feels like a great place to probably die in the apocalyptic fight FOR JEWELRY. All the Avengers yet again suck at fighting computerized Josh Brolin aka Thanos and then he calls in all his evil space backup army and everyone is definitely effed. It’s a lot like the part in the Battle of Winterell when the Night King does a Nancy Pelosi clap and reanimates all the dead people to fight the living and Jon Snow cries.
Tumblr media
It doesn’t even help when Deglam Thor gives hisself the most wild lightning based makeover. Seriously, he surrounds himself with lightning, gets those badass Total Eclipse of the Heart eyes, and somehow is able to use lightning TO GIVE HIMSELF A HALF UPDO AND BRAID HIS BEARD HAIR AND NO I’M NOT MAKING THIS SHIT UP. The lightning fails to remove his beer belly and again: I’M HERE FOR #2 CHRIS COMMITTING TO THIS DEGLAM BODY. I don’t know the hows and whys of lightning makeovers - I guess it’s just restricted to hair. Which still looks like crap, beard braids or no. Moving on: Best Chris can somehow use Thor’s hammer now and did I miss something? I think it’s a Chris thing and I’m glad that everyone agreed that Worst Chris wasn’t invited to it. But also he’s not there. YET.....
Tumblr media
BUT THEN. Dr. Benedict Cumberbatch who I definitely forgot about (and who has the most hilarious American accent) creates all his sparkler circles. Also his whole wig/goatee lewk is like that one adjunct professor you had who kept office hours at a coffee house and/or a part-time vampire. Anyhoo, he BRINGS. BACK. EVERYONE. Black Panther (and all of Wakanda!) Spider-Man! Guardians of the Galaxy! ETC! THE JEWELRY HAND CHANGED HANDS MANY TIMES. THERE WAS SO MUCH GOING ON. Everyone starts kicking ass but it’s still not enough until Captain Marvel and her 90s pixie cut show up and I swear to god all the lady Avengers made a protective barrier around her like the Lilith Fair is serious getting back together (I WISH!) It was all the ladies you love - Valkyrie on a flying horse! Wakandan warriors BUT NOT LUPITA BECAUSE US IS BETTER THAN THIS! Elizabeth Olsen in that terrible red wig! Kate from Lost! Gamora and Nebula I think! - plus also Gwyneth who I totally forgot had an Iron Man suit too but sure! It was a very girl power moment that almost worked but very did not. In a final moment we all saw coming since before Infinity War, Iron Man sacrificed hisself for the jewelry hand (also: humanity). Thanks for your service: the jewelry was saved! OH MY GOD THIS REVIEW IS SO LONG. Am I still writing this? Are you still reading this? THANK YOU FOR READING THIS.

In the end, everyone is saved and reunited...to have a sweet funeral (apologies again for picture quality)! I shit you not: they gave Iron Man’s electric heart a viking funeral at his cabin. Really! And all the other prestige actors you weren’t sure would make it to this movie were there: Marissa Tomei in some sweet beachy waves! Michelle Pfeiffer in some not so sweet beachy waves but whatever: I’m always happy to see her! Michael Douglas! The Winter Soldier in his somehow shittier than Loki wig! That chick from How I Met Your Mother! Other people! Samuel L. Jackson! Oh and I think Iron Man’s daughter is now being co-raised by Jon Favreau? Ok! It was also a funerary co-production for ScarJo and I guess (?) Elizabeth Olsen’s computer boyfriend (aka Paul Bettany) who somehow wasn’t able to be revived by jewelry for reasons unknown. Oh and  where the eff were Bobby Cannavale, Michael Pena OR GODDAMNED JUDY GREER I DEMAND ANSWERS!!!!!

SO THEN. Captain America has to go back in time to return the jewelry because Dr. Hulk promised Tilda Swinton and I still don’t get how time travel works in this movie. Also Dr. Hulk is still running the time travel machine even though the whole Ant-Man crew specializing in this technology are back but ok? It all goes great until Captain America returns IN OLD AGE MAKEUP WHAT. Turns out he took a detour to have a life and get married and huh? He then tells Anthony Mackie that he can be Captain America now - officially making the MCU America of 2023 on the level of real America in 2008 and I can’t believe they didn’t cut to a weeping Jesse Jackson (or at least Don Cheadle?) However, Deglam (still!) Thor makes Valkyrie the King of Asgard which officially makes MCU Asgard of 2023 definitely way better than the America of 2019 (yeah I went there) and then he decides to be a Guardian of the Galaxy which means we get to spend an agonizing 3 minutes with Worst Chris. Then they cut to the 1940s and a slow dancing Best Chris and Hayley Atwell and truly: if you can just time travel and be happy can’t we bring back all the dead Avengers too then? HUH? Whatever: THE END! Oh and there’s no post-credits scene but still watch the first like 5 minutes of credits to enjoy the truly mind boggling way that the MCU chose to credit the 5000 people in this movie. Are we please done with Avengers movies now?
VERDICT: DOESN’T WURQ (BUT NOW I WANT A LIGHTNING MAKEOVER)

Pride month may be over, but I was thinking about a lot of f/f content and why sometimes I can be disappointed with the genre
Side note this will be a long and extremely personal conversation that will cast a wide net over multiple genres, so expect some generalizations as I probably won’t list many specifics
But it just feels like almost no matter what a lot of it ends up defined by men
There’s the obvious ways, when it is for titillation and the male gaze, the purpose is less to tell a love story between two women and more about selling a fantasy, I’d argue the fantasy doesn’t even have to be explicitly sexual, honestly with in yuri subtext-laden anime you have little girlfriends who play at it in very innocent and adorable ways, and honestly I think that sort half-in half-out without actually committing to actual queerness irritates me more than the former
But something that I feel gets less discussed is this idea that the presence of maleness itself is a threat to queer female sexuality, often f/f content will take place in settings where it doesn’t even feel as if men exist and even with canon queer characters sometimes I feel it comes with the underlining subtext “well of course they’re all lesbians, they don’t have any other option now do they?” which is frustrating on many levels, but hits especially personally as a bi woman, there’s that common stereotype that our attraction to other woman is just a means of drawing in men, of being just an experiment to turn them on
Going specifically into fandom, it can be frustrating for me to want more femslash, yet most of it is only there to serve as background fodder for m/m ships, even when dressed up in progressive language this often feels like old school “wah girls are annoying and boring so I’ll take them out of the picture so I can focus on the actually important guys” this is a dead horse in fandom so i don’t want to beat it too much, but from my experience sometimes f/f ships will get “popular” in that people will say they ship them but then content is rarely/never actually created for them, bc it is clear that people’s actual interest in them is shallow compared to other ships
And I don’t want to shame fans of m/m content, aside from being rude it just isn’t productive, but I rather ppl just be open about what they like and actually put forward content or consumption of f/f ships they’re genuinely interested in.  Again I don’t want f/f content to simply be used a shield to block against accusations of misogyny to then be thrown away once the attack has ended
This is where we get super personal, which means this isn’t me telling you not to do this, but why I don’t do something, but another component of this can be seeing female characters who canonically are attracted to men get reinterpreted as lesbians by fandom, again as a bi woman my first thought is again that feeling that “oh so she can only be interested in women if she has none in men?” Coercive heteronormativity is def a thing and I don’t want to discourage lesbians from exploring that through fandom, still what truly grinds my gears when it isn’t used to explore her love for another woman, or her simply coming to grips with her identity, but to bar her from being shipped with a man and simply crack one-liners all the time about how she can’t stand them, bc again it isn’t about her anymore, but about getting her out of the picture so we can focus on ppl who actually matter
Like a broken record, I think these feelings are a reason why rgu appealed to me so much, the cast is mixed with Utena specifically having both male and female love interests, her choosing Anthy is not the next best thing, and as their arcs develop together, it becomes clear that the love each other as individuals rather than idealized goals or dreams, it is a reason that lesbian!Utena bothers me on a personal level, bc as a bi woman I like seeing Utena’s attraction to men be very real and tempting, yet she still chooses a relationship that is more authentic and less manipulative than say what Akio would have given her
And what I complained about isn’t canceled forever. All female casts with f/f content can be done well without giving that second option vibe (a particular favorite of mine is the Steam game “Black Closet”) you can only care about m/m and f/f ships and include them together, you can hc whoever you so choose as a lesbian, regardless of if they’re married with 2.5 kids
I just want f/f content that focuses on why these two women love each other, I want my love to feel genuine and more than for the convenience of some man who either does or does not want to fuck me
