Investigation: Hong Kong’s role in illegal deforestation of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil
If major import markets, such as China and Hong Kong, were to restrict trade to slaughterhouses with more transparent supply chains, industry experts believe it could have a major impact on the sustainability of the Brazilian meat sector.
Tumblr media
At first glance, there is little to link a handful of featureless Hong Kong office spaces to the world’s largest tropical rainforest. But supply chain data – obtained by non-profit organisation Repórter Brasil and shared with HKFP – reveals that at least four businesses in the city have imported beef products farmed by a man whom Brazilian police have called “the greatest devastator of the Amazon.”
Cattle farming is “the number one culprit of deforestation in virtually every Amazon country,” according to environmental NGO the World Wide Fund for Nature. Roughly 17 per cent of the Amazon rainforest has already been lost to habitat conversion, with trees felled to make way for cattle pastures and the dusty roads that transport Brazilian beef from the forest to the global marketplace.
Among those profiting from the degradation of the Amazon is rancher Bruno Heller, whose family owns farms that have been fined US$5 million for illegal deforestation, and who has been accused by Brazilian federal police of clearing 6,500 hectares of forest – an area almost five times the size of Lamma Island.
Through a process known as “cattle laundering,” where cows raised at illicit locations are transported to those with a clean record, Repórter Brasil tracked cattle from Heller’s family farms to a slaughterhouse, 163 Beef Industria & Comercio De Carnes Ltda, and traced beef products from that slaughterhouse to Hong Kong.

Im dredging my brain for song ideas but it either brings up the muscial one: Do you hear the people sing (which WAS adopted by HongKong during their protests) Or Sabaton with like.. "Warsaw City of War" for the Warsaw uprising. But im like 99% sure neither actually fits the theme....hnnng. xD
Well. Les Miserables is set in Paris, which despite what every French person outside of Paris says, is in fact in France, so that fits well enough. (and I like continuing the pattern of submitting stuff for France that doesn't have any French people involved) Sabaton though... they are *painfully* 'we only sing about history let's not talk about politics' when probed about how some of their lyrics seem to celebrate war and soldiers fighting for shitty causes at the *best* of times. I'm not finding them saying anything about the massacring going on in Gaza (unsurprisingly), but I feel a bit iffy about including them regardless. What do y'all think?

Also a fun story😂 In Chinese Tolkien fandom there is this interesting popular parallel between Thorin and a famous local fiction character.
In Chinese wuxia novels (or Hongkong wuxia novels, depending on your political stand), there is this famous character called Murongfu. He is a prince of an ancient kingdom and sees the purpose of his life as reclaiming his home and eventually, he lost the love of his life bc of this.
Fu also died in the end of the story he was in. But in an altered version, he became a madman roleplaying a king with a bunch of kids. There was a Thorin/Dwalin cross-over artwork of dragon sickness! Thorin having this ending, roleplaying king for his sane friend ... I love the idea even though I do not ship them!
For me, I do have some personal perspective added to Thorin and his relationship with ‘home’ because of this parallel. What if Thorin actually sees the blue mountain as home or sees himself homeless because the old kingdom was too far ago and the chance to reclaim it was too small?
I like to think that Thorin’s relationship with Erebor is more than straightforward love and longing. He might have identity issues, not knowing where he belongs or when can he be back at Erebor before the adventure happened. But as Bilbo’s perception of home made him think, he is not afraid of calling Erebor home anymore.

Filipinos are not Asians because Asians are smart
Reposting an essay we had to write a reaction paper about back in college. This is worth the read.
Don’t be fooled at once by the title of the entry. The story behind that statement excludes us.
Last year, a friend left the Philippines and went to the United States. In his German class, the students were international. The professor asked who the Asians were and one by one the Asian students introduced themselves. And so it went, the Chinese, the Koreans, the Vietnamese, the Singaporeans etc. all raised their hands. Finally the professor calls this Filipino and asks,
Professor: Where are you from?
Filipino: Philippines
Professor: Oh, Filipinos are not Asians! They are Pacific Islanders! Because ASIANS ARE SMART…
In the United States, it is already being taught in schools that Filipinos are not Asians—that we are Pacific Islanders. While there is a lot of reaction against it, I am surprised that many intelligent Filipinos abroad have accepted this without question.
Pacific Islands are places like Samoa, Hawaii, Tahiti, Guam, Cook Islands, Mariana Islands—and their common denominator? Most of them do not possess their own national and political identities—they are islands under the jurisdiction and protection of more powerful countries like USA, France and New Zealand. Most of these Pacific Islands are still referred to as “indigenous natives.” They have very, very small populations and they have no global role or power. While they have their own unique culture and characteristics, they do not hail from any great civilization in the past. Hindi sila lumaban at tumayo para sa sarili nilang lahi.
What is even sad, however, is that even Pacific Islanders do not like and do not accept Filipinos! One good example are Hawaiian tourists we met in China. When they learned that we were Filipinos, they disgustingly uttered , “You eat Balot!” and avoided us like a plague.
The statement of this American guy, filled with racism obviously merits strong disapproval. In fact, our friend was so angry after having been humiliated in front of the class. The logical thing to say, is that the Philippines IS part of the ASEAN group of nations. We can also say that Japan is an island in the Pacific Ocean but is not considered a Pacific Island. But we should ask—why would no one dare to call the Japanese people Pacific Islanders? Why pick on the Philippines?
Simple. Because Japan has produced cars and we have produced dried mangoes and pastillas. The Philippines has been so left behind by Asian countries that foreigners shake their heads and ask, “What happened to your country?” Let us not even compare the Philippines with the four Tiger economies, ‘cuz they’re just way way way too far ahead. What about Vietnam and Thailand? I read that for every one Filipino who has a Master’s Degree, Vietnam has 6, Thailand has 25 and Singapore has 200. But why bother to be educated when the national dream is to go abroad? We are scattered from Hongkong to Kazakhstan, from Italy to even North Korea. Thousands of our doctors are becoming nurses. Our teachers become caregivers. Our women become entertainers and prostitutes. Our young people only know one course and that is nursing. Why would foreigners respect us when we do not even respect ourselves? We are the country of Gucci Gangs—our elite own Picassos and they simply have no heart to alleviate and educate the masses, as F. Sionil Jose and Brian Gorrell—the pitiful Australian guy who was robbed by DJ Montano—sadly pointed out.
I am reminded of Condoleezza Rice, the first black woman to become the United States Secretary of State. She was born in Alabama and suffered discrimination on account of her color. But she was taught from a young age by her father, that she had to be “twice as good”and prove that she was deserving of advancement. Condoleezza Rice explains, “I was going to be so well prepared, and I was going to do all of these things that were revered in white society SO WELL, that I would be armored somehow from racism. I would be able to confront white society on its own terms.” (Washington Post, Lessons of Might and Right, How Segregation and an Indomitable Family Shaped National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, By Dale Russakoff, September 9, 2001)
The only way to answer people, who insist that we are uncivilized tribes is not by shooting off our mouths. The only answer is to beat them by studying and working ten times harder than the rest—to beat them not just once or twice, but to do so consistently for the next 20,30, 40, 50 years. Unless we Filipinos are prepared to love our country, and sacrifice ourselves by doing the extra-mile, we really deserve to be called stupid.

Thoughts on Zaofu?
Zaofu reminds me a lot of Hongkong- in it's vibes I guess? I don't know why. It's a pretty city. Fairly modern and sophisticated. To Suyin's credit, I think she's done a great job with it. But also, I'm sure she dug into the Beifong funds to make Zaofu what it is, so I'm certain there's some kind of sus politics because of that.
But all in all, nice place. Would visit for a weekend maybe and then grow tired of Suyin's over the top hospitality to have me say "omg you're the best" and kinda owe her in a way?
I like the metal lotus a lot. 12/10 would try to balance on the tip and fall off.

i like that knowing what global south means requires at least a little bit of global political knowledge. it is not just a replacement for third world or underdeveloped, and it is also not a geographic descriptor. like there are "developing" and "second world" countries in europe but they are still a part of the imperial class. yes china, india, and vietnam are also global south. it's funny to see someone who doesn't know what they're talking about make assumptions based on how they "feel" about certain countries trying to use this terminology and not anything based on what anything means. i like that it is nearly impossible to liberalize vs what they have done w so much social theory because global south is a descriptor of both economic and imperial relations so japan, hongkong, south korea, singapore, apartheid isreal, even turkey are all global north countries too. and like hearing someone use global south and north is like a pretty good indicator to know if they have anything meaningful to wrt to politics, global south solidarity etc etc.

"foreign agents" "Giving the evil Chinese commies access to Our beautiful golden Fields of wheat blond haired blue eyed 2.5 kidded innocent Americans" okay senator McCarthy who should the HUAC do next
I'm getting so much love in my inbox currently. It's amazing.
Fun fact: I grew up in a communist country. Which is one of the reasons I specifically did not say anything about communists here.
My friend, your true colors are showing.
(I was thinking primarily of Russia, btw. who decidedly is not communist)
So: The question remains: do you deny certain foreign agents that you know act in bad faith access to your countries internet or not?
Russia, as we have seen, has no problem banning anything. Neither has China. They just do it.
By now, we all know that TikTok has different algorithms for different countries, the keylogger thing, and so on.
But how do we deal with it? Allow it and run massive education campaigns against TikTok, so people all know what they're getting into?
Is that ethically feasible?
Is any of this?
Should we defend TikTok even though we know it's owned by the Chinese government and used to collect data on basically everyone?
(Btw. be careful if you have Chinese, Taiwanese or Hongkong friends. China has a vested interest in what they're saying, even and especially when they're living abroad. Some possible goes with Ukrainian friends or people involved in helping Ukraine. Nobody quite knows what Chinas stance is towards Russia currently. But better paranoid than sorry, and this is such a small thing to be careful about)
Should we create or own TikTok? We could bring back Vine!
I don't have answers either. And I sure as hell and tell anybody what there answers should be.This is as much a philosophical question as it is a political one, ESPECIALLY with the current, somewhat dictatorial trajectory the US are on.
#Is it a problem that Google meddles in politics? Fuck Yes.
Is it a problem that American lawmakers obviously have no clue what they are talking about and can't even corrently repeat spoonfed questions? Fucks yes.
Is TikTok a problem? Fuck Yes.
These things are not mutually exclusive! Sometimes there is no straigth answer.
Yet the questions need to be asked anyway, if only to allow people to form an informed opinion.
That said: Support Ukraine! Down with fascism and imperialism.

EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE
"ORGAN SYSTEM OF REPRESENTATIVE ANIMALS"
Although humans and animals (technically “non-human animals”) may look different, at a physiological and anatomical level they are remarkably similar. Animals, from mice to monkeys, have the same organs (heart, lungs, brain etc.) and organ systems (respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous systems etc.)
Tumblr media
The digestive system includes the mouth, pharynx (throat), esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus. It also includes the salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, which make digestive juices and enzymes that help the body digest food and liquids.
Tumblr media
The respiratory system is a biological system consisting of specific organs and structures used for gas exchange in animals and plants. The anatomy and physiology that make this happen varies greatly, depending on the size of the organism, the environment in which it lives and its evolutionary history.
Tumblr media
the system that circulates blood and lymph through the body, consisting of the heart, blood vessels, blood, lymph, and the lymphatic vessels and glands.
Tumblr media
The urinary system, also known as the urinary tract or renal system, consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and the urethra. The purpose of the urinary system is to eliminate waste from the body, regulate blood volume and blood pressure, control levels of electrolytes and metabolites, and regulate blood pH.
Tumblr media
(EN-doh-krin SIS-tem) The glands and organs that make hormones and release them directly into the blood so they can travel to tissues and organs all over the body. The hormones released by the endocrine system control many important functions in the body, including growth and development, metabolism, and reproduction.
Organ systems are groups of organs that work together to do a job for the body they live in. They can help with gas exchange, removing waste, obtaining and transporting nutrients, sensing, and protecting the body from disease.
PHILIPPINE POLITICS AND GOVERNANCE
TREATY OF BIAK NA BATO
The Pact of Biak-na-Bato, signed on December 15, 1897,[3][4] created a truce between Spanish colonial Governor-General Fernando Primo de Rivera and the revolutionary leader Emilio Aguinaldo to end the Philippine Revolution. Aguinaldo and his fellow revolutionaries were given amnesty and monetary indemnity by the Spanish Government, in return for which the revolutionary government would go into exile in Hong Kong. Aguinaldo had decided to use the money to purchase advance firearms and ammunition later on return to the archipelago.[5]: 49 [6]: 232
