5 YouTube Channels Homeschool Families Simply MUST Check Out
This Week's Curated Content is All About Some Really Dope (read: Interesting, Informative, and Generally Accurate) YOUTUBE Channels that Homeschooling Families (or Classroom Teachers) Can Use to Support Their Homeschool Curriculum.
(Looking for Podcast Suggestions to Supplement Your Homeschooling or Classroom Curriculum? Say Less! Check Out This Post Filled With Educational Podcast Recommendations.)
Tumblr media
MELANATED AND WELL-EDUCATED
New and Confused Homeschool Families Start Here! Talk about user-friendly. This channel is the perfect go-to site, especially for new homeschooling families.
The presenter, Erica, is well-informed and speaks with the benefit of first hand experience. She also podcasts, blogs, and vlogs (or something like that 😃) so you can consume her content in various ways.
Tumblr media
ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: It's a GO for Me.
These videos are clean! The recording and formatting is so well done. And getting insight from someone who's actually DOING what you're doing ... well, well, well ... you gotta love it when a great plan comes together.
Tumblr media
CRASH COURSE
Crash Course is a YouTube channel filled with science, social science, and historical content presented in fun, usually a mix of real people and animated clips.
Agreeing that the site is witty and fast-paced, CommonSense.org and other commenters are seemingly thrown off by the word 'course' in the channels moniker. CommonSense.org gives Crash Course a rating of 3 out 5 stars, deciding that anything labeled a "course" should be interactive and offer opportunities for students to "engage" with the content - something they claim Crash Course does not necessarily do.
Tumblr media
ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: Check it out. 👍🏾
Sometimes a video is just that ... a video. And most homeschooling or traditional school teachers will add their own spin on information curated from the internet regardless. The content is better suited toward older learners and families should preview the content first to ensure that all topic matter is copacetic.
Tumblr media
THE HANDMADE HOMESCHOOLER
With shoutouts to the "Homeschool Haters" (facts 😉) and videos titled THINGS I WON'T DO AS A HOMESCHOOL MOM and 6 THINGS I DON'T DO AS A HOMESCHOOL MOM, you know you are about to get the real-deal-truth-ruth when it comes to homeschooling. Mandy's channel -THE HANDMADE HOMESCHOOLER- is truly an internet fav. Plus, she runs a free Facebook Group and, even though I, personally, don't rock with a whole bunch of extraneous and miscellaneous purchases and fees related to homeschooling, if you need some early guidance, this channel has curriculum and other resources for preschool and upper grades at the ready.
Tumblr media
ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: Yes, Please! 💯
Besides the cute, little YouTube Shorts she does, as a classroom teacher, I REALLY appreciate The Handmade Homeschooler's approach to HS prep and organization. She seems to backwards plan and Year-At-A-Glance prep like the most veteran of school teachers. Her content is interesting and informative. And definitely the place to go for real talk, organization, preparation, and subject based ideas and information.
Tumblr media
ART FOR KIDS HUB
Art for Kids Hub is a great look for all homeschooling families because:
The channel is actually created and hosted by an actual family. With kids. Doing art.
Most of the projects are easy, uncomplicated, and do not require a bunch of supplies or skills. In most cases, pencils and perhaps crayons or markers will suffice.
My boy loves this channel for all of the cool HOW TO DRAW ... videos that provide easy to understand, step-by-step techniques for drawing everything from ants to a slice of lemon pie.
Tumblr media
ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: For sure! For sure! 👌🏾
While some of the drawing tutorials or subject matter (Bugatti anyone?) may frustrated younger or easily frustrated children, pre-viewing and pre-selecting a drawing or two you know your homeschooler can handle is the perfect addition to your Art or Creativity curriculum. For sure!
Tumblr media
Real Life Lore
What's cool about the Real Life Lore YouTube channel is, by far, the ... LORE! Featuring titles such as What's the Deepest Hole We Can Possible Dig? This channel is chock full of subject matter based topics that are arranged in way that makes what could be somewhat dry content (digging holes ... huh?) really engaging for elementary aged homeschoolers and up. Filled with science and history/social studies heavy themes, from comprehension questions, essays, drawings, map quests, experiments, and more, your learner can successfully interact with this content in so many ways and have fun doing it.
Tumblr media
ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: For sure! Say less. ✅
Top Fuel Dragsters Visualized and Telling Time on Mars. Sheesh. Say less.

What is Asperger’s syndrome? This is everything YOU need to know about the condition. Ok so let’s be frank first off, Asperger’s Syndrome is now referred to as Autism spectrum disorder. Autism used to be split off into several naming conventions like high functioning autism, low functioning autism, classic autism... you get the picture. But this all changed in 2013 to give everything the umbrella term Autism Spectrum Disorder. So what is Asperger’s Syndrome? It is an autism spectrum diagnosis that is characterised by a few common personality traits, and has lower support needs on the spectrum of autism. Here are 4 ways you can identify a personality trait of autism in a person on the autism spectrum. 1.Lack Of Eye Contact Autistic people will have issues with making and maintaining eye contact. 2.Talking Constantly As Autistc people will have an obsessive interest in a certain topic, they will want to talk about it not stop. And sometimes you won’t be able to stop them talking about their interest. 3.Social Skills Issues Socialising and unwritten social rules are very much a miss with autistic people and this shows in their lack of social skills and social understanding. 4.Not Understanding Jokes As autistic people take everything very literal, jokes and sarcasm will be lost on them. Please let me know if you have anything to add to this conversation by leaving a comment below. I read every single one! Also follow @TheAspieWorld for more autism content. WIP: "Allegedly" from Hallucinated Jungle
Sharing "Alleged Confession", a poem from my current Hallucinated Jungle WIP that reflects on my potential diagnosis of high functioning autism. Part of my journey of self-discovery and personal growth through creative writing.
This poem is from Hallucinated Jungle, one of my current projects. The title is a nod to Hallucinated City (Paulicéia Desvairada) by Brazilian poet Mário de Andrade. The poem itself reflects a private stuggle I’ve been dealing with over the past year or so: the potential diagnosis of high functioning autism. I haven’t taken the final step to be officially diagnosed yet. I don’t know if I will. I…

HOMESCHOOLING VERSUS TRADITIONAL SCHOOLING: Part One
Tumblr media
Homeschooling is beneficial and appropriate for many families and is a decision that should be made on an individual basis.
Yet, for whatever reason, with some in the traditional school community, the question of homeschool VERSUS traditional school continuously seems to rear its unwelcome little head.
Here, then, is where I find it appropriate to note that if you've had a successful traditional [public/private] school experience and subsequently came out of that experience not only well-rounded and well-educated but also appropriately socialized [no bullying, plenty of substantial friendships that enhanced both your life and your wellbeing], and full of not only book knowledge and suitable life skills, but also beneficial social and emotional learning - Congratulations. Now go forth and conquer because You Certainly Did That! Traditional School was (obviously) the proper educational solution for you and your family. High-Five! 🖐🏾
Only with some in the traditional school community does the question of homeschool VERSUS traditional school ever seem to rear its unwelcome little head.
But here is where you must also recognize that just as the decisions for your family are your business, so too are the decisions of families who choose to pursue educational solutions that perhaps differ from yours. In a nutshell, it should be understood, that while the choice to homeschool is someone's business it just so happens that that business is not yours.
Tumblr media
Homeschooling is regulated in every state. In some states, homeschooled families are regulated and observed far more than teachers in traditional school classrooms. (Ask me how I know). And this overused, recycled list of so-called relevant "homeschool-centric issues" are not now nor have they ever been exclusive only to homeschooling.
Appropriate Socialization?
I wonder if the boy whom nobody ever plays with agrees that all public school socialization is correct and appropriate?
Meaningful Friendships and Relationships?
Let's consider if the teenage girl who cries every night and is beginning to make unwise social decisions because she feels that she can never match up to the "cool" girls believes this to be so.
Mandatory Reporting? Overlooked Abuse?
The child who STILL gets smacked around every night, covers the bruises with a sweatshirt (that no teacher ever asks about) every day, and practically starves every weekend begs to differ.
Relevant Curriculum and Teaching?
Check the Yelp or Google listings of many traditional (particularly public) schools or sift your way through the Facebook posts filled with distressed parents and guardians uncomfortable not only with what their children are being taught but also dissatisfied with the experience level or attitudes of the teachers interacting with their children on a daily basis for proof of the fallacy inherent in this "all teachers are good teachers" misnomer.
On this issue then, it is important that we all, on both sides, are explicitly clear. When it comes to the education of children, this isn't some type of cage match. It's a personal decision, individualistic to each family and the child they are tasked to raise and protect.
And as it relates to the question of homeschool or traditional school then, I'd advise that those with alternative opinions (on either side) quit attempting to argue the issue with each other and, instead, go argue this topic with their therapist or their mother. Respectfully.

For those not having a diagnosis.
It’s difficult to explain your obessions right?
It’s difficult to explain why you get tired after just 2-3 hours of socializing right?
It’s difficult to explain why making decisions takes so long right?
It’s  difficult to explain your sensitivities, the noise around you, people walking by, the light, the jokes that make you feel uncomfortable?
It’s difficult to explain why your overthinking is actually just you thinking right?
It’s difficult to explain your needs and wants to your friends, or your parents saying that they shouldn’t click their pen, shake their leg, shouldn’t be too close right?
It’s difficult to explain why you can’t relax and stop obsessing analysing people right?
It’s difficult to explain your wordfinding difficulties or the reason why you’re talking too fast right?
It’s difficult estimating if you’re friends or not, if you’re friends enough to go up and talk to someone right?
It’s difficult not to obsess about something you like and then after a few months find another obsession wondering if you will ever find your calling right?
It’s difficult to explain why you feel so down and tired and keep focusing on the negatives even after a pretty good day, your obsessive mind keeps reminding you of the little details people dont even remember you doing or saying it right?
It’s difficult to be in this world where ‘’other’’ people seems to know it all, seems to have it all. Nice group of friends, amazing socialising skills where it seems so easy to come up with new stuff to talk about right?
With or without the diagnosis you know you best. it doesn’t make your problems less real with no diagnosis.

Hello!
Hello people who are reading this ( or unhumans I don’t judge ) I would like to introduce myself.
I am Kennedy. I have High Functioning Autism , or Asperges. I am 16 years old and am female. I am verbal but I do struggle communicating , sometime. I do have sensory processing issues, all which I will talk about later.
I just want to talk about what my life is like with autism. I also will talk about different aspects of autism that go with both sides of the spectrum.
I hope you enjoy and can learn or associate with my blog !

How do you identify autism in someone? Here is 5 SIMPLE ways you can notice it EASILY! Autism is classed as a hidden or invisible disability, which means that it isn’t always easy to see as it isn’t presented in any physical attributes... well any that you don’t automatically notice. Autism can present visual clues as to if someone is on the spectrum, so here are 5 simple always you can identify Autism easily. Use these physical attributes to notice autism in a person, so you know how to help them 1.Rocking (stims) People on the autism spectrum will sometimes rock from side to side or back and forth. This is a process called stimming which is a calming self soothing repetitive behaviour that the autistic person will find comfortable. 2.Hand Flapping (stims) Autistic people will potentially flap their hands up and down. This is a process called stimming which is a calming self soothing repetitive behaviour that the autistic person will find comfortable. 3.Eye Contact Eye contact is extremely difficult for people on the autism spectrum to create and maintain. It is probably the no.1 giveaway to notice that someone is autistic. 4.Anxiety With autism comes Anxiety, not just general anxiety or GAD, it has a bulk of social anxiety that comes co-occurring with the condition and is noticeable, as if it is agoraphobia. 5.Zoning Out Autistic individuals will have a extream hyper focus on things that are informs of them that take their interest. This from an outside viewpoint looks like the person is zoning out of reality. However, in fact they are zoning into something on a focused level. Please leave me a comment if you have anything to add to this, i read every single one. Also please follow @TheAspieWorld for more autism content. I am LIVID. Yesterday, my mom found out that my sister's friend's mother is now not letting said-friend come over our house because my mother has an autistic child (a.k.a. me). Not only that, but she told others about this and told them not to allow their kids over, yet didn't think to discuss it with my mother. Keep in mind that I've met this woman once in passing.
I'm twenty, almost twenty-one. Yes, I have autism. However, it's called "high-functioning" for a reason. I have a job. I have friends. I have my license, I drive a car. I'm registered to vote. I may need a little help with things, especially when I get overwhelmed, but I have my wonderful parents for support, as well as programs to help people like me.
To clarify, I'm not mad for myself. I'm not upset for myself. I've dealt with people like this my entire life, people who judge me without knowing me. I was bullied mercilessly in school and have learned not to care what people think. The reason I'm mad and sad is for my mother, who has to deal with hearing about this. The reason I'm mad and sad is for my sister, who is now limited in hanging out and spending time with a good friend. The reason I'm mad and sad is for my sister's friend, who is now limited in hanging out and spending time with a good friend. I've met her and can assure you she is a very nice girl and in no way reflects her mother's ignorance; we get along very well.
My mom is amazing. I often tell her how I think I would probably be dead if I had a different mom, and I mean it. Whether my different parents would've gotten so upset with me that they accidentally killed me in a fit of rage, or wouldn't have been nearly as supportive and left me alone when I needed help, I'm certain of this. Again, my mom is amazing.
Feel free to share this if you are so inclined. I would love to spread the word, not to shame this woman, who I will leave unnamed, but to let people know that this still happens. This ignorance needs to change.

I’m on FB a lot and someone I went to grad school with posted a autism meme. Turns out she was also diagnosed with Aspergers. We were friends for the year and a half I was there. I figured we were both just introverts. I wonder how many other introverts have HFA.
