cuz even if i know this is a game of romance and wits and murder mystery law, hyv cant just drop the cast like the nxx team (aka vyn and artem have doctorate degrees, mc is a graduate attorney, luke has a master's in bioengineering, and marius is working on his master's in oil painting) and not expect me to want to know more about how theyre interacting with their specific spheres of academia

stellis university's biology department is begging "Pearce, L." to please consider giving a guest lecture for their students, pretty please
i think it's very entertaining to remember that several departments at stellis university have a bunch of Celebrity Poster Students/Alumni/Profs.
psychology dept obviously has the graceful intelligent dr vyn richter and hoo boy, that incident back in his personal story 3 where for a hot sec the university believed a SKETCHY CALLOUT POST accusing him to be a TOXIC MANIPULATOR....okay thats pretty on par for the course of how social media works HAHA. but my point here is that vyn is beautiful and a great teacher and theres a fanclub for him and he was momentarily involved in juicy drama. hes the perfect poster prof, he brings in a lot of attention and, in turn, interested students.
the law dept obviously has artem wing, and theyve also got rising attorney mc too!! im not sure if ingrid rosworth is canonically also a graduate of stellis uni, but if she is, im sure the law dept can drop some spicy rumors about ingrid and artem's Bitter Rivalry or something
aaaand the fine arts department has The marius von hagen as a grad student, and that in itself is already a big draw and a bunch of publicity.
but what about the STEM nation?
luke pearce is the only person on the team that is in no way affiliated with stellis university. he got his master's degree at national central university, which (and i know i mentioned this before but i want to mention it again) is noted in the Big Data Lab to be a canonical rival school of stellis university
National Central University has been competing with Stellis University for the top-ranked college domestically for years, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses. [from the Big Data Lab entry on NCU]
which is already so hilarious to think about. can you imagine national central university and stellis university's sports teams go against each other for a big game and suddenly the nxx investigation team is divided due to school loyalties? luke's gonna be the lone ranger rooting for national central and everybodys gonna affectionately call him a traitor

while luke is the most lowkey of the team in terms of publicity/popularity he gets from the media, surely, surely this canonical genius' bioengineering contributions during his studies garnered attention from the nerds at stellis uni.
the master's thesis written by Pearce, L. is something many students and faculty have been fangirling/fanboying over the moment they read it, and it becomes known that Pearce, L. is currently residing in south stellis, and thus the dept keeps sending luke emails inviting him to do a guest lecture sometime
and he always just replies with a concise and friendly "No thank you! :D" because 1) hes got enough on his plate to do right now and 2) cuz of stupid school loyalties jhvJHVKSJHFS, hes not teaching on enemy territory

luke (biology/engineering) and vyn (psychology/pedagogy) use APA. mc and artem (law) use The Bluebook Style. and marius, our sole trooper in the fine arts, uses MLA.
if ever the team have to collaborate with somebody else in the team who is outside of their respective discipline's citation style to co-author some research, blood will be shed. the chaos would be immense. everybody assumed they were using the same citation (i.e. whatever citation each of them were respectively used to) and then when they realize the formatting discrepancies, the ACADEMIC RIFTS IN MANUALS OF STYLE, everybody gets extremely defensive and comically overdramatic over their preferred format of choice

The comms cut after the fighting starts, and then basically a minute later HJC calls Kou Tong back with "Let me just ask, handsome, can you tell me your personal contact information?"
Then when they meet for real its soooo bad (affectionate). My favorites were Huang Jinchen embarrassing Kou Tong in front of his dead mom (long story) to pay him back for teasing him, and Kou Tong replying to Huang Jinchen asking him out with "whatever there is to discuss, we'll discuss in bed". Theyre such clowns

I'm guessing few people know this couple especially considering good TL was deleted(sob) so first a quick intro: Shen Qianling is an actor from the modern world who transmigrated into a wuxia world. Worst part? The person he transmigrated as is engaged to a man! And the man is a huge weirdo! So Shen Qianling resolves to do everything in his power to break the engagement. You Can Guess How Well That Works Out for the MC of a danmei novel lol
So the annoying flirt in question is exactly SQL's husband-to-be, Qin Shaoyu. He's constantly going "wife~" and making dramatic declarations of love... especially in front of others. Shen Qianling is onto his insincere ass! (They're really kinda theater kid x theater kid tbh, both are acting and pretending a lot.) Later it's actually revealed that Qin Shaoyu had a reason to act like that and provoke SQL all the time, but by that time SQL's (lack of) swag has deeply captivated him, so he just goes from annoying flirting(insincere) to annoying flirting(affectionate).

Liu Qi x Bai Chuan is a "masterful cook x ultimate foodie" couple. Not only is Liu Qi an amazing cook, his cooking is actually what first draws Bai Chuan to him.
To quote: "Not long later, Liu Qi served up two dishes of home-cooked food. Tomatoes and scrambled egg, vegetables stir-fried with smoked meat, and a large bowl of fish soup."
And then, a few paragraphs later: "Liu Wi once again entered the kitchen and made two bowls of noodles, added in two eggs, and topped it with a few slices of cooked beef."
And then: "Liu Qi rolled his eyes at Bai Chuan's antics and asked, 'What do you still want to eat? Want me to add in another dish of fried prawns?'"
And so on. Bai Chuan, being the river god, brings in all the seafood they want for Li Qi to cook: "With a shake of his sleeves, a heap of seafood that could be found in the river came out from his sleeves, making pitter-patter sounds when they landed on the floor as they were still alive and jumping around energetically. Frantically, Liu Qi called out for him to stop so he could use a small basin to pick up the prawns. The remaining fish and crabs were stored in a bamboo basket for their next meal."
Even better, they split the chores! Bai Chuan uses his river god-powers to act as a magical dishwasher after Liu Qi's done cooking. Peak domestic. What harmony.

And then the lore drops, and you find out that then-newly-ascended-stone Song Qingshi had already been mesmerized by Phoenix-God Yue Wuhuan ten thousand years before the story started. And *then* the background of the universes' worldbuilding is revealed, and you realize that Yue Wuhuan had actually been waiting for Song Qingshi for literally hundreds of millions of years, long before these two ever even had human forms. You want "long-ass time"? Here's your long-ass time.

Headcanon: Meeting Artem in University
(Definitely not edited)
I've been kind of on a roll with Artem headcanons recently because I keep looking at his cards (as a simp for him). Either way, I have another headcanon about him for you guys, and it's actually your first "encounter" with him.
I know that Hoyo already has a story set about how you/Rosa/MC first meet Artem, but I feel like this could happen in the actual storyline outside of the cards (?). Also, there is a tiny spoiler from the game about Artem's relationships with certain characters, but I don't think that it ruins too much about the actual story. For the timeline and setting, assume that you are Rosa and that this is during your time in university, so imagine this being set a few years above the official start of the game.

"How do I improve this part of the paper?" Rosa asks the older woman across the desk from her. The tension in the room feels thick as Rosa begins asking questions regarding the quality of the paper. She needed this paper to be perfect.
After a brief reread of the section, the older woman explains, "You need to elaborate more about the details that you interpreted. Your evidence already discusses a lot about the observations of the scene, so you really need to get deep with your analysis." Rosa nods understanding the explanation, already plotting out how to rewrite the essay. Before she could ask another question, her advisor decides to end their meeting, "It's almost five, and I have another person coming in after you. I'm afraid we have to end our discussion here." Rosa looks confused as she glances to the clock in the office and realizes the time.
In a rush to clean up and leave, Rosa bids her farewell to her thesis advisor, "Thank you for your efforts, professor. I'll be sure to adjust my paper with your feedback." She bows towards her advisor before carefully leaving the building. As she walks towards the exit, her heels click against the ground, and she continues thinking about the discussion with the professor just earlier.
While she's lost in her thoughts, a male on the other side of the hallway sighs, thinking about his current workload. Noticing the girl who just exited the office, his eyes follow her figure. Her medium-length brown hair flow behind her as she briskly walks down the hall, and her fingers seem to be counting something. Her concentrated eyes don't detect a certain campus celebrity watching her intently while standing still. She quickly walks past the male, and his eyes follow her figure getting smaller down the hallway.
He barely manages to break his gaze on her when he shakes his head, but it seemingly breaking a trance he was just in. He approaches the office door and knocks on it, the hard wood against his knuckles echoing in the hallway.
"Come in," the female voice inside answers as she pours some hot water into a cup. The male outside grips on the doorknob before twisting it and entering the room. "How were classes, son?" she asks when she sees his familiar figure in the room. He carefully closes the door to avoid the loud thud when the door completely closes before slipping his backpack off.
"They were okay, but it's just been a long day since it's getting darker earlier," Artem briefly explains to his mom before sinking into the chair. The seat is still warm from Rosa which shocks him at first, but he slowly settles and enjoys the warmth. While waiting for his mom to sit down with him, his eyes wander on the room before landing on the large monitor on the desk. He notices a student's essay displayed on the screen, reading the name: Rosa (L/N).
"It is getting darker, so you shouldn't forget to take care of yourself this winter," his mom reminds him as he only half-listens to her, humming in response. His mind wanders as he recalls the focused girl walking down the hall lost in thought. Although they never physically interacted with each other, she already left a strong impression on him.
"Did someone check in with you about their thesis?" he asks, still looking at the computer screen. "The new semester just started, and someone's already finished writing theirs?" Surprised at the pace, he looks at his mom trying to see what she has to say about it.
With a sigh, she replies, "Yes, that's a student's completed thesis. She wanted me to look over it since she wanted perfect it." Artem nods, understanding the situation. Although it surprises him that someone already decided to finish their thesis, it's understandable to finish early to revise. "Not only that, she works really hard to make sure that she does well on these papers," she comments again, finally sitting down in her chair. Her fingers grips the string of the tea bag as she moves it up and down in the water.
"How is this thesis though in your opinion?" he asks in curiosity. His mother eyes him, noticing his new found curiosity and internally chuckles at her son.
"It's just a draft, so obviously there are some things that she needs to change up. However, considering that, it's coming along well for her," she explains before setting the tea bag down. In response, he nods before seemingly reading the paper himself. "Why are you so interested?" she finally questions, trying to figure out what her son is thinking.
"She just caught my attention on my way here; that's all," he mumbles softly while still skimming the lines of text. She scoffs softly before taking a sip of her fresh tea.
Yeah right. Only caught his attention.

If you know me and my presence here, it should come as no surprise that I love talking about the stuff I write. So, when @mthollowell-writes tagged me in this thing, I wasn't going to say no.
1 What is the main lesson of your story (e.g. kindness, diversity, anti-war), and why did you choose it?
The Clockwork Boy and the series I hope it becomes is a story about unity and collaboration. The forces arrayed against them are considerable, but since both The Spire and The Clockmen are filled with inveterate backstabbers, the scrappy underdog of Jake, Adrian, and The Northwest has a fighting chance, not only for survival but the future of the city. My "thesis" if you will is that The Spire and The Clockmen are doomed to fail in the long run because the glue that holds them together is that the participants can each profit from each other's strength. This means that nobody has an incentive to show weakness, lest they be judged unworthy of the group, and nothing resembling mutual trust can develop. The Northwest and the rest of "team hero," on the other side, rely on each other to compensate for their weaknesses and vulnerabilities which inherently builds trust.
This theme emerged from the place I held in life when writing the initial draft, I believe. I was, and am in many ways still in a fairly vulnerable spot in my life. I am seeking treatment for both physical and mental health problems as well as employment despite challenges in the above-mentioned departments. It's easy for me to feel self-conscious about having to rely on external factors such as doctors and other healthcare professionals, but I have found much solace in the works of the effervescent Philosophy Tube, and one of her older videos, in particular, have shaped this insecurity into some neat thematic stuff in the book I write, for which I am eternally grateful.
2 What did you use as inspiration for your worldbuilding (like real-life cultures, animals, famous media, websites, etc.)?
A lot of the world of Hearts In Clockwork has been inspired by colonial-era Europe, England in particular, but I am aiming more for a wider pastiche than a direct reference. There's also some bits of steam punk aesthetics to the setting, but due to severe disruptions of the coal supply, much of the borderline impossible steam-powered technology is mostly for show.
3 What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? Do you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness, help readers grow as a person?
My main characters are still kind of figuring out their place in the world around them per the last book, so their needs are very personal. Jake wants to belong somewhere and 13/Adrian wants to know who he was before becoming a Clockman, or barring that what kind of a person he wants to be now that he is free. It is my goal to transition these goals into grander goals as the series progresses, as Jake is motivated to oppose The Spire and The Clockmen by his bonds with Adrian and The Northwest, and Adrian attempts to end the conflict brewing in the setting as nonviolently as possible in direct defiance of his original design. I base this progression on the idea that problems, even some problems viewed as personal, might be best solved by trying to change the world in some way. It is a counterargument to the "Clean Your Room"-crowd, I suppose.
4 How many chapters is your story going to have?
The Clockwork Boy currently sits on 24 chapters and one epilog chapter. It's approximately where I want it lengthwise.
5 Is it fanfiction or original content? Where do you plan to post it?
It is original content. My goal is to get it published, preferrably through a smaller indie outfit.
6 When and why did you start writing?
This question is a bit ambigious. If it's when I started writing period, I've done it as long as I've known how to. My motivations have never been entirely clear to me, but I do believe it comes from a need to be seen and heard in some way.
As far as when and why I got into The Clockwork Boy, I started that during National Novel Writing Month in November 2022. My initial motivation was frankly that I hadn't found any genre novels with intrigue, politics and a gay romance in a while, so I decided to try writing one myself.

I think a manga has to do 2 things well, mainly. To grab your attention so you start reading it, and to keep your attention so you don’t drop it, and come back every month/week/whatever for it.
I actually started reading Yohaji because I saw it in a bookstore and the art, characters and premise caught my eye. While the “student transfers to a wacky school” scenario has been done to death (though I do enjoy it), I’ve never actually seen the teacher version of it done. I think I’ve started appreciating it more as I’ve grown up and grown out of “14 year old swordboy saves the world” plots, it’s just as fun to see an adult MC and adult characters having fun.
And speaking of characters, I think Haruaki is the perfect character, in general. His design is clean. Simple. To the point. I think a good indicator of a good character design is how easy you can shorthand it, how many details you can take away and still have it be recognizable. You put a ahoge on a distressed circle and that’s him.
My favorite phenomenon is the fact that on any book website, the first volume is always rated the worst. The biggest criticism I see of the manga, and of Haruaki specifically, is his sailor uniform fetish and “I can’t stand to watch him get bullied”. The second one is a common attitude problem I see of people going into comedy media, of taking things too seriously. Of course different genres of media have to be enjoyed with different metrics, you don’t go into Looney Tunes expecting high literature, and “sucks that Wile E Coyote got an anvil dropped on him”, said no one ever. “You’re supposed to laugh” is the most cringe thing to say about a joke, but I think some people ought to have a wider collection of lenses to look at media through.
I have thought about the sailor uniform fetish thing long and hard. The knee jerk reaction is “fetish is a strong word” and “he doesn’t need that character trait” but those are COWARD THOUGHTS! The more I think about it, the more I think it’s a genius move. First of all, it grounds him. In another more serious series, his combination of character traits (smart, athletic, has exorcism powers, reincarnation of Abe no Seimei) would be pretty scary, but his patheticness and his sailor uniform fetish grounds him firmly in the comedy genre. It’s also a good setup for jokes, and punchline to other jokes. Also, it gives him a reason to use his powers and do all the other weird shit without the story getting too serious.
Second of all, it acts as the great filter. Too many manga have your turn-off way too late into the story, whereas Yohaji has it in the synopsis, and if you don’t read that, on page two of chapter 1. It sets the tone, and you’re immediately confronted with the decision of “am I okay with this”. And if it’s not a turn-off, it’s almost certain you’re the target audience and are going to enjoy it. It’s almost like a thesis statement, “if you like this thing you’ll like the rest of it”.
The progression of the story is good too, while it starts with the tried and true “ahh the students are youkai so scary”, it’s actually a good thing, since it grounds the reader and gives a point of reference to jump off from. And as someone who reads other manga, and has seen fiction before, you probably get used to it pretty quickly, and the story does as well, and by the end of volume 1 it’s no longer doing the “youkai so scary” thing. (Chin up, Seimei-kun! There’s more things to be scared of in the world!)
The 25 students of class 2-3 are also handled super well. It’s a daunting number going into it, but most of them get a focus chapter early on, as well as earlier chapters being focused on the core group of Sano, Mame, Hijita and Beniko to ease you into the world. Even the ones that don’t get focus chapters show up in the background and interact enough that even if you’re bad with names, you can at least remember a trait or schtick of theirs. (See: the amount of times I’ve heard “oh yeah the merman” or “oh yeah the toilet paper”)
As a comedy manga, Yohaji gets to pull my all-time favorite trick: “Ohhhh there’s plot”. This is something I realised watching chainsawman analyses, which is “openly showing emotion is cringe”. This is true of basically everything, casual conversation with your friends, a song that hits too close to home, a story that sees you like a specimen under a microscope to pick apart; instinctively, many people show aversion to this, after all, isn’t it terrible to be seen so thoroughly by something other than yourself?
The great trick of comedy, is its ability to let your guard down to things like that. Unlike sadness or outrage, also exploitable and addictive emotions, joy is positive, and there’s no reason to pull yourself away. Comedy also typically doesn’t take itself as seriously, so when there IS an emotional moment, you’re vulnerable and it hits you full force. Basically it’s like this:
And now, the most important thing that Yohaji does well IMO, is each chapter’s structure. With monthly manga, a huge problem is by the next month you’ve forgotten what the previous chapter was about. (This is a problem I personally have with a lot of the Jump SQ monthly mangas, that shit just keeps escalating and I don’t know what’s going on anymore and I’m just along for the ride) This isn’t even usually a problem with Yohaji, since most chapters are standalones anyway (or 2 parters) but we’ve gotten to see how it handles this with Renren arc and Kyoto arc, and I have to say, really well!
Each chapter sets up its own minor conflict and resolves it by the end, while also setting up a vague direction for the next chapter. And the first 1 or 2 pages of each chapter has enough information to remind you what happened previously. This self-contained conflict-resolution makes each chapter a lot more memorable and satisfying, as well as being more effective for establishing new information for the rest of the arc to act on. (See: the common complaint on monthly manga chapters of “what? that’s all that happened this month??”, which is what happens, I find, when you keep escalating and escalating without ever resolving anything)
Well. All that said, the simplest answer to “what makes this fun to read” could probably be boiled down to clear panelling and clean character designs. Without those nobody will stick around to see what else the manga has to offer. Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal taste, and I think it’s better to have a specific target audience than casting the net wide, and it just happens you find out if you’re that target audience by page 2 of chapter 1.

“No, no, you’ve got it totally backwards,” exclaims Levi, pausing the anime you’re watching and waving his hands. “The love interest is never the redhead! They’re always the red herring before the main character picks the other one!”
You roll your eyes. “That pun was so bad, I’m taking custody of Henry 2.0 for the next month. He doesn’t need to be around to hear this crap.”
“How are you going to lug his tank into your room?” asks Beel around a mouthful of chips.
“Obviously, I’m going to get you to carry it.”
A sharp knock on Levi’s door precedes Satan ducking his head in. “Guys, a Council meeting has been called.”
“When?” groans Levi. “We just started season two and it’s getting good!”
“Now. Get dressed and be in the foyer in ten minutes,” says Satan before disappearing again.
Unusual. The situation is very odd. Usually, you’re given at least a day’s notice before a meeting. Everyone’s schedules are so packed that it’s impossible to do otherwise. Something must be wrong for Diavolo and Barbatos to call a meeting so suddenly.
Anxiety shoots into your fingertips as you hurry across the house and into your room. Very little disturbs the royals, not with their ranks and power levels. Is there a threat? Some kind of coup forming? There’s been backlash to the exchange program and some of the aristocracy isn’t happy about how human- and angel-friendly Dia can be.
No, that can’t be it. Chances are, you wouldn’t be included in such a meeting. Your status as a Council Member is hazy and there are times when your presence isn’t needed. You’ve been outright excluded from some of the more confidential meetings. Satan didn’t say Simeon or Solomon are on their way to keep you company, so you must be included. You’re part of whatever this is.
You don’t bother doing up your jacket or finding a tie. The trek from Levi’s room ate up most of your allotted time on its own, and if someone throws a fit, they can fix you up themselves.
Your fingers stall as you lace your boots.
Simeon. Angels.
Fuck.
“Thank you for joining us on such short notice,” greets Diavolo after he opens the meeting. “I’m aware that you are all quite busy, and your presence is appreciated.”
“Of course, my lord,” says Lucifer, glaring at his brothers like he’s daring them to disagree.
There’s tension in the room. The edges of Diavolo’s smile are too forced. Barbatos’s face is so neutral it looks painful. Belphie is awake, eyes staring hard at the royals.
A childhood book flashes to your mind. Something is not right.
“What’s happened?” you ask, words sharper than you intend.
Diavolo sighs, his ever-present grin softening a tad. “Always so straight to the point.”
“As some of you may be aware, the Celestial Realm has been…difficult as of late,” says Barbatos.
Mammon shifts a coin across his knuckles, the gold nearly a blur in his relentless energy. “When are they not?”
“They’re always complaining about something,” bemoans Asmo. The nail file in his delicate hands looks more like a weapon than a tool. “Last time I sent a report over, I got a whole thesis back on proper font choices.”
“Silence.” Lucifer’s voice doesn’t raise beyond a normal speaking tone, but all of his brothers jump.
Diavolo clears his throat. “As Barbatos was saying, they’ve refused to continue with trade negotiations until their demands have been made.”
Several curses and grumbles pop up around the table, fury evident on all faces.
“Those little–”
“How fuckin’ dare they–”
“–need to trade just as we–”
“High and mighty bastards–“
You snap your fingers, pushing enough magic into the act to make a small explosion. “Gentlemen. Let them finish.” The silent threat of what happens to those who disobey hangs in the air.
Lucifer casts you a thankful glance, while the others wear various shades of shame.
“How did we ever get through meetings without you?” asks Diavolo, rubbing his temples.
“Loudly,” drawls Barbatos. “Now, their demands are quite simple. In fact, it is just a single demand, but it is one we have fought against as hard as we could.”
Neither of the royals are looking at you. Fear bubbles under your skin, sickening and feverish. Something is not right.
“MC, would you silence the brothers with your pacts, please?” Diavolo keeps his eyes on his hands.
Lucifer startles a bit. “My lord?”
“All of them, MC,” repeats the subdued prince.
“Quiet.”
You’re hyperventilating, somewhere outside your body and watching from another perspective. This is what it feels like to panic. This is what fear feels like. Heart racing distantly, mouth dry, eyes wide, hands clutching the sleeves of your coat.
A cool pulsing starts on the middle of your thigh before spreading over the rest of you. Rhythmic and consistent, the chill washes through you like the ocean’s waves. It settles your frantic heart and evens out your breathing. The current takes your adrenalin with it as you come back to your body.
Levi’s eyes glow in the dim light of the room. You smile at him, tasting saltwater on your tongue. He nods once and ducks his head to hide his blush. The waves fade to the background, but never fully leave you.
“What’s the request?”
Diavolo looks up from his hands, his expression grave and tired. He finally looks his age–ancient, with every year present on his youthful face. “Michael wants to meet with you.”
Mammon’s hands slam down to the table, yet they fail to connect with the surface. Your order had been vague enough to keep them from making any noise. He trembles with impotent rage, fangs lengthening to press dangerously to his lips.
He is the most obvious in his displeasure, though Asmo is a close second. The lust demon shifts his form, gorgeous in his monstrous anger. Wings sharper than any blade flutter behind him as if searching for prey to slice.
Satan and Lucifer are the calmest, if you didn’t know them. The former’s breathing is restricted to a calming pattern, though his horns flash in and out of existence on his head. The latter is still, not even his chest rises. It’s only when you look at the claws tearing into his palms that you see his unease.
“Why?” Your voice is dull, even to your own ears.
“We don’t know,” confesses Diavolo, shaking his head.
Barbatos scoffs. “Perhaps he wants to meet the person who did what he couldn’t.” Distaste drips from his every word.
“Barbatos–”
The butler is unfazed by his master’s chastising. “He’s never stopped with his obsession and you know it. This has nothing to do with the exchange program or trading. It has everything to do with the brothers.”
You don’t miss his pointed look at Lucifer.
“When?” You direct the question at Diavolo, as Barbatos’ simmering rage isn’t something you want to touch with a ten foot pole.
Six silent demons erupt in a flurry of hand-waving and mouthed words. You keep your eyes on the exhausted prince in front of you.
“Soon,” he admits. “We’ve tried to avoid this as best as we could, but they won’t budge. Probably by the end of the month.” He turns to Barbatos. “Can you check for the most likely time?”
Your fury and fear will come later: when nine demons aren’t relying on you to stay calm. You can fall apart and rage when Beel isn’t shaking and Mammon isn’t green in the face. When Lucifer looks like he’s actually breathing.
Barbatos’ pupils shrink to catlike slits, green shining eerily out from under his fringe. His lips press together in a harsh line. “We’ll be lucky to get a week.”
“Gimme that,” you snap at Belphie on your right, holding out your hand for his untouched stationary set. He jolts in his seat, coming out of some daze, before he passes it over.
To Whom It May Concern,
I welcome the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Celestial Realm. My interactions with the Celestial exchange students have been wonderful. Given my status within the Infernal Realm, I would require two attendants. Being mortal necessitates security wherever I go, no matter the realm I am in. I am sure you can understand the need, as the pact-bond between sorcerer and demon is quite intense. I would hate for my demons to be hurt by any harm done to me.
I look forward to a meeting at the Demon King’s Castle with your representatives, Prince Diavolo, Duke Barbatos, myself, and my attendants. Hopefully, Simeon and Luke may attend, as I am sure they would love the chance to see some familiar faces. Please send your reply by way of Duke Barbatos.

You flick the letter to Satan after you finish, cancelling the command on him in the process. “Well?”
“Clever,” he says with a nod. “You’ve reached out as an equal and emphasized your status. The threat that we would be hurt by someone hurting you is a good touch. Whom are you going to bring?”
Barbatos stretches across the table to snatch the paper. “Michael can’t challenge me directly, nor can he keep me out of the meeting.”
“I was thinking Mammon and–wait, what?” You turn on the still-fuming butler. “What do you mean by that?”
You’ve never seen Barbatos’ other demon forms. The delicate horns and split tail are all you know, but you were a fool to think it was all he had to offer. Barbatos widens his mouth in a mockery of a grin, sharp black and white teeth filling more space than they should. His smile stretches beyond what should be physically possible–nearly reaching his ears. The fragile-looking horns form a crown of bonelike wings; they twitch and shudder, like hands flexing before snatching prey.
His eyes and tails–plural in this form–glow with something akin to bioluminescence. Old magic radiates with a dark pulse. No, Michael couldn’t challenge this creature. God himself probably couldn’t.
“Point taken,” you reply, raising an eyebrow. “You’re making Levi nervous, by the way.”
Barb shakes his head, dispelling the shift. The poor envy demon next to him sighs in relief.
“My apologies, Leviathan.”
Diavolo looks between you and his butler with a curious glance before likewise shaking his head. “As you were saying, Mammon and…?”
“Perhaps we should allow the others a chance to give their input?” asks Satan with a pointed look at you.
Truthfully, that sounds like a bad idea. None of them really know the meaning of “chill”. You wave a hand anyway and hope for the best.
You are instantly proven right. Mammon, Asmo, and Levi begin shouting their opinions while Beel and Belphie wait for their own opportunities. Lucifer won’t look at you, nor does he say anything.
“One at a time or, so help me, I’ll find a way to ground you,” you growl into the chaos. Their panic and emotions are bleeding into yours. Even Levi’s waves don’t take all of it away completely.
Your words seem to enact the pacts. All of them except Mammon are instantly quiet.
“–terrible fuckin’ idea,” he continues. “No fuckin’ way am I allowin’ ya anywhere near those bastards.”
“We don’t have a choice, Mammon,” sighs Diavolo. “If we can’t trade with them, we’ll lose access to many ingredients we rely on for healing.”
Barbatos nods. “That’s not even to mention how the economy will crash based on the loss of the non-necessities. You know the financial situation of the realm better than anyone. Think this through, Mammon.”
Heavily ringed fingers tap out a staccato rhythm on the table as Mammon’s eyes unfocus. Levi makes a move across the table towards his brother, but Asmo catches his wrist with a hiss. “Let him think, dummy!”
Eventually, Mammon looks up from the table with a grimace. “Barbatos is right. A week is a generous guess, to be honest. Any longer and we’re gonna have the lower classes in uproar. They’re already feelin’ the strain.”
“Satan, Asmo, I want you two starting up public events for charitable works in the coming days,” orders Diavolo, the Monarch in his voice. “Clothing, food, money, whatever–you’re both popular enough to get the upper classes in a frenzy if you try.” He turns to the twins. “Beel, Belphegor, I trust you two can work with local businesses to support Asmo and Satan’s work.”

“And us?” asks Lucifer, gesturing between him and Mammon.
“They’re with me, right?” Nine heads swivel in your direction. “Chances are that if there is going to be an attack, it’s going to come while we’re scrambling to prepare for their arrival–and dealing with the economic fallout.”
For all the Infernal Realm’s power and might, they are still under the thumb of the Celestial Realm. “Separate but equal” is a nice thought, but it’s not true in practice. The demons need the angels more than the angels need the demons.
“Yes,” says Diavolo with a nod. “I don’t want you going anywhere unaccompanied by both of them.”
Mammon’s typical grumbles don’t even register as you cock your head. “The only angels in the realm are those in Purgatory Hall.”
“We can’t discount the possibility that one of them could harm you on Celestial authority,” murmurs Satan.
That doesn’t feel right. While your relationship with Luke is a bit strained (due to your closeness with the seven brothers), you very much consider Simeon a friend. “They wouldn’t–”
“Even Luke could be a lethal threat against you,” says Barbatos. Something like grief passes over his features before that cold neutrality returns. “Solomon will train you in defense, just to be safe.”
Lucifer still hasn’t spoken.
“If there is nothing else, we can adjourn.” Diavolo rises from his seat. “Pass all communication through Barbatos or Lucifer, unless it is something urgent.” There is nothing of your friend in his face or demeanor; in this moment, he is solely the Devil’s Heir.
As sad as it is, the Prince can protect you better than Dia can.
A gloved hand clasps yours as your group leaves the council room. Lucifer’s expression is blank, reserved, and far away, but he holds onto you tightly. You decide not to push, especially as you’re still in public. You squeeze his hand in yours twice. I’m right here. I’m still here. You’re not alone.
Lucifer repeats your gesture, and you know the message was understood.

Eunseo + Minyoung:
Eunseo is a part of the RFA and has known Yoosung and Rika since she was in high school. She's a year older than Yoosung and Rika saw her potential as an author and a journalist so Rika asked her to work with the RFA!!!
Eunseo's backstory is a whole other topic I'll touch on in the next ask LOL.
Minyoung (in this universe, which I consider their "canonical" universe if that makes sense), is Saeran/Unknown's assistant and has been working alongside him for two and a half years by the time of the main plot (which follows Seven's route).
To make a long story short, Minyoung was originally supposed to be MC from Ray's route, but it follows the Bad Ending where MC refuses to be the play tester so Ray takes her back to magenta to be his assistant.
As a result, Minyoung knows about Eunseo but Eunseo doesn't know anything about her. Two years after Secret End 2 (hence the name of the AU, Secret End: After), Eunseo is working on her Master's Thesis and decides to write about Mint Eye and its previous Believers.
She sends out an online survey asking for previous members of the cult to willingly step up and attend an interview. Minyoung is the only legitimate member of Mint Eye, so Eunseo focuses her work on Minyoung for now.
Then... through Eunseo, Minyoung and Saeran meet again <3.
Eunseo + Seven:
To be honest... Eunseo has just never liked Seven to begin with. Maybe because she just doesn't appreciate his humour but tries to suck it up because Yoosung loves Seven so much lol. But I like to think that two years later, she learns to be civil with him and enjoy his presence.
Yoosung + Seven:
Yes! These two goofballs are still very close even in this AU, probably closer than ever before. I'm a YooSeven geek, so I really can't get rid of their dynamic no matter how hard I try LOL. Yoosung has matured a lot in the time that's passed though and he's actually often the voice of reason when Seven and Saeran get into fights. Yoosung understands most out of them all what it means to let people go and let them develop, I think.
As for RFA as a group, they do still often meet up in this AU. They're still Rika's Fundraising Association and they still throw parties. Jumin and Jaehee still work closely together, but Jumin has started to see things from her perspective. Thank god he doesn't overwork her anymore. Jaehee still has plans of opening her own cafe and Jumin wouldn't mind helping her out. Zen is still single as ever, but he's become less immature about it.
But thank you so much for asking about my meepy Minyoung! She's been my self insert for about three or so years now and I was really nervous about showing her off to the world. I appreciate your interest sooo much <3

Diavolo: Welcome to the Devildom, MC
Diavolo: ...Oh, pardon me. Feeling a bit shocked, are we?
Diavolo: Well, that's understandable. You've only just arrived, after all.
Diavolo: As a human, it will probably take a while for you to adjust to things here in the Devildom.
MC: Is this a dream...?
Diavolo: Hmm... What a very human thing to say.
Diavolo: Outstanding. I have a feeling you might be just the sort of person we're looking for.
MC: The Devildom...?
Diavolo: Yes, exactly, the Devildom. I see that you catch on quickly. Excellent.
MC: ...
Diavolo: I suppose I should start by introducing myself.
Diavolo: My name is Diavolo.
Diavolo: I am the ruler of all demons, and all here know of me.
Diavolo: And someday soon, I will be crowned king of the Devildom.

Diavolo: You're standing inside the assembly hall, the very heart of RAD. This is where we officers of the student council hold our meetings and conduct our business.

MC: Why am I here? When can I go home?
Lucifer: I will explain everything to you.
Diavolo: MC, this is Lucifer. He is a demon and the Avatar of Pride.
Diavolo: He's also the vice president of the student council and my right-hand man... and not just in title, I assure you.
Diavolo: Beyond that, he's also my most trusted friend.
Lucifer: Flattery will get you nowhere, Diavolo.

MC: Answer my question.
Lucifer: ...Interesting. This one is quite different from Solomon.
MC: On behalf of the students?
Lucifer: Diavolo believes that we demons should start strengthening our relationship with both the human world and the Celestial Realm.
Lucifer: As a first step towards this goal, we've decided to institute an exchange program.
Lucifer: We've sent two of our students to the human world and two to the Celestial Realm.
Lucifer: And we're welcoming four students to our school: two from your world and two from the Celestial Realm.
Lucifer: So I take it you've probably put two and two together at this point, right?
Lucifer: You've been chosen from among the people of the human world to participate in this program of ours. You are our newest exchange student.
Lucifer: Your period of stay is one year. You will have to work on the tasks that you will receive from RAD.
Lucifer: After one year, you will write a paper about your exchange here in the Devildom.
MC: Tasks?!
Lucifer: You are here as an exchange student. Did you really expect to spend your time here fooling around?
MC: Write a paper?!
Lucifer: I am not telling you to write a doctoral thesis. You can take it easy.
MC: You demon!
Lucifer: What do you hope to gain pointing that out to me?
Lucifer: Don't glare at me like that. It's not like I will abandon you all by yourself here in the Devildom.
Lucifer: You need someone to look after you, and I think that someone should be my brother Mammon.
Lucifer: He's the Avatar of Greed and...how should I put it...?
Lucifer: Oh well, you'll understand soon enough.
Lucifer: Here, take this device. It's called a D.D.D. It's a lot like the cell phones of your world.
Lucifer: This will be yours to use for as long you're here.
Lucifer: Now, go ahead and try calling Mammon with it.

author ask tag game
Thank you for the tag, @catchingbigfish! I'm tagging @sarahlizziewrites, @moonandris, and @sam-glade with no pressure, and with an open tag for anyone else who is interested. Apologies if you've already done it, this has been sitting in my drafts for like a month.
All of these answers are in regards to my thesis, which is a large-scale dark fantasy novel with an alternating third-person PoV.
(1) What is the main lesson of your story (e.g. kindness, diversity, anti-war), and why did you choose it?
I don't like to conceptualize my fiction as having "lessons." It's not so much that it's inherently inaccurate as that it's not constructive, or conducive to deep and resonating fiction; I have found that this presentation lends itself to moral absolutism. Furthermore, I don't tend to have my characters learn objective moral lessons, but rather learn or decide something about themselves or the world, and make a choice about how they are going to act in the future.
So to phrase it in that way, "what does your main character realize or decide about himself," my main character Fasenil decides that there is enough in the world that makes it worth saving even though it's largely hostile to his existence, and that he is willing to sacrifice himself in order to save it.
(2) What did you use as inspiration for your worldbuilding (like real-life cultures, animals, famous media, websites, etc.)?
I am very aware that the first thing that any of my readers think of when they read my drafts are Skyrim. While it is an inspiration to some extent, my world is far more inspired by real-life cultures, primarily real-life Viking Age Scandinavia. I take historical research very seriously, and I take great pains to maintain historical accuracy when relevant. I have a frankly massive number of sources that I'm not going to cite here.
That's the main inspiration for the area of my map where the novel takes place; inspirations for the larger world include the Holy Roman Empire, 20th century fascist movements, and more.
(3) What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? Do you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness, help readers grow as a person?
I think that this question runs up against the same problems as the first. I don't desire to teach readers any sort of specific lesson with my fiction. If they take lessons away, that's nice, but it's not something that I concern myself with.
To answer a related but separate question, I hope that some small fraction of readers who feel the same things as I do feel on some level seen; not the shallow "validation" that is so often talked about in online art and fandom spaces, but with the sort of universe-reordering forcefulness and urgency that I've felt so few times in my life. Not saying "you are a market that it is advantageous to target," but "you exist, I see you, and I know." I am writing, in that sense, to my younger self.
My characters both are in an abstract sense seeking to transcend their pasts, and to find belonging. At the beginning, Fasenil is at first balancing his desire for "success" and accolades with the growing threat that visibility presents to him. Hallbjorn is trying desperately to carve out a life that is free from the obligation of violence, but can't seem to do it. I don't consider it my job to pretend that any of these struggles have objectively correct or moral answers. I can only have my characters make decisions, and do their best to forge a way forward.
(4) How many chapters is your story going to have?
I mean, there are thirty in my outline, but that is extremely fluid. It is possible that it will eventually be divided up into a duology.
(5) Is it fanfiction or original content? Where do you plan to post it?
It's an original fiction novel, also functioning as my MFA thesis. I don't plan on posting anything more than snippets and supplemental content (art, memes, etc) anywhere; it will be traditionally published.
(6) When and why did you start writing?
I've been writing since I was a little kid. I've only been taking it seriously as a craft and as a career path for about a year and a half.
(7) Do you have any words of engagement for fellow writers of Writeblr? What other writers of Tumblr do you follow?
I follow many, many writers of tumblr, too many to name here.
The piece of advice that I repeat to myself most often is, "good prose is a renewable resource." What this means is that you must trust in your ability to be able to generate good prose in the future, and not stay married to ineffectual passages just because they are well-written or you are fond of them. My first priority is the function of a paragraph/passage/scene within context, because that is much more difficult to revise than prose itself, which can always be improved.
Also, participate. Write weird essays and post them. Read more. Pick a topic that interests you and read half a dozen papers about it on jstor. Ask questions and offer to workshop people's stuff for them, and then get good at workshopping. Form your own opinions instead of just absorbing whatever's popular in the social media-sphere that you're in.

jumping on the poll bandwagon because I have not touched Scrivener in FOREVER (read: two weeks)
unfortunately, I do not have multiple stories like most people on Writeblr since I keep fixating on the same story and its characters, lmao, so IDK if I can do the same thing everyone else is doing
HOWEVER, I will be taking my thesis in BFA Creative Writing this year and I am going to do doing something based on my main story! I was planning on finishing Book 1 (which I already have 4 chapters for), but my thesis adviser is heavily discouraging I do a full novel (minimum requirement for word count is only 15k and we're supposed to finish writing that with revisions by early December) so I've got a bunch of backup plans just in case I can't convince her!!
so here's a poll + bonus read more for further description of thesis ideas!!
Book 1 (Excerpt)
This is actually the option my adviser recommended the most. I have already written the first four chapters, even doing major revisions, and that already hit the 15k minimum word count, so she said that just revising these chapters would be the easiest option.
My biggest gripe with this is that I don't want to end it after Chapter 4. It ends on a mediocre cliffhanger, and we don't meet the other two main characters until later on. Not to mention, the BFA CW majors in my university get to (independently) publish and sell copies of their thesis at the end of the year, so it would be much more satisfying if I do the full Book 1.
Anthology: Thematic
I was thinking I could do instead a thematic short story collection linking the common traits of the main characters (Axel, Avery, Leandro, and Nathan). Each of the short stories would focus on a different MC's backstory. The central theme would be their loneliness.
The stories are (without giving away certain plot twists in Book 1):
AXEL: a story about a group of friends playing together, which turns out to be a product of Axel’s imagination
AVERY: the story behind the fallout with her ex-friends
LEANDRO: Leandro talking to his family about getting friends while figuring out he's a trans guy
NATHAN: Nathan talking to other children working under his drug pimp spirit stain dealer
Anthology: Characterization
This one was inspired by fanfiction, specifically the concept of the same characters in alternate universes. How can you tell the character is still the same character when they have a completely different backstory and setting? Up to where do you draw the lines?
The various settings are:
Historical — Pride and Prejudice but set in the late Spanish colonial period and from the POV of Elizabeth’s (Avery) best friend (Axel)
Sci-fi time travel — From 2099 CE, Axel is asked to travel to 2013 Metro Manila to chase after a time-traveling criminal (Raven)
Urban fantasy (Aswangs) — Axel the friendly manananggal helping their friend Leandro, who recently discovered they’re a manananggal
Modern real-life — Axel signing up their friend Nathan on a blind date auction during high school fair season
Alesseia (Original) — Axel discussing how to beat Rex with all of their friends
Anthology: Timeline
A short story collection featuring the same character, likely Axel, at different points in the series. The series is divided into three arcs, so it would likely be:
Before Arc 1
Between Arcs 1 and 2
Between Arcs 2 and 3
After Arc 3
The Actual Book 1
The actual book 1 of Alesseia. Tentatively titled the Dragon's Deed. I really, really, REALLY want this, but like. it's gonna be what, 50k words 😭 so unless I pull a NaNoWriMo again, I can't blame Ma'am

Something, something, how many audiences who say they want serious, mature stories that deal with heavy themes actually want that?
This isn’t a critique of anyone or any audience in particular but....
I find a lot of the pro Brotherhood stuff tends to talk up the happy ending as one of the key things that makes it better than 03 and that feels odd to me.
Even ignoring that one could argue 03 had a happy story ending if not one for every single character & that the steps BH took to get there I find questionable...
Well I’m reminded of an almost inverse situation in the DBZ Fandom, bear with me.
See, when Episode of Bardock came out, it was super popular and well loved. Bardock was a tragic monster, indifferent to his crimes until he & his people were set to be the victims and he made a futile stand to stop it & failed miserably, dying.
Then like 20 years later a Bardock Special came out and had it be he got sent back in time, got a ‘gruff old guy, sweet young kid’ vibe going with some rando alien, became a Super Sayian, defeated an analogue to the guy that killed him, started a legend.
People largely hated it, though not everyone, and yet I am left confused because...
That’s what these people had been doing with Bardock for years!?
Concocting excuses for him to survive and become a heroic resistance fighter. To go to Earth & dad Goku despite completely disregarding his son for weakness until he died (& also ignoring or writing out Goku’s adoptive grandfather) Having him become a Super Sayian & defeat Frieza, or end up in Heaven for some godforsaken reason or be brought back from hell to become an MC.
What I am getting at here, is that audience have spent like two decades ignoring the inherent tragedy and villainy of Bardock’s story and his character. So why the hell did they get so angry about a story that, is no more contrived than their own spins, gave them exactly what they wanted?
More pointedly, I feel the fact such rewrites of Bardock being as popular as they were indicates my FMA point and general thesis as well.
It seems like a lot of audiences say they want stories to deal with dark themes, grim story lines and heavy themes... But when those things don’t lead to some perfect happy ending of white picket fences and two point three kids get angry about it.
I’m not saying stories that go into heavier things have to end sadly. But once you start taking themes like literal genocide seriously and having believable knock on effects to a characters actions... Well it can eventually become disrespectful to the topics to hamstring together a happy ending..
I think that’s where I was going with this, not sure, my brains still cooking it.

Hmm, i just wasn’t going to class cause i have really serious sleep problems. Like, i can’t sleep at night and i’m already on trazadone which is supposed to help me sleep but doesn’t work right. So james prescribes me ambien too. I tell him my anxiety is going even crazier than usual he prescribes me clonazepam. So now I’m taking ambien, trazadone, and clonazapem for sleep. I’ve always been really overly fatigued during the day but now i just can’t wake up, at all. I am sleeping till five (ball-park) no matter how many alarms i set or when i go to sleep. So i’m sleeping through class and being late for work. So he takes away my clonnie and my PRECIOUS ambien, and now i’m on Laraxpem? lonazepam? And i’m actually not tired all day again! But i am not falling asleep at night 🙃 and also, i am still way too fatigued way too early in the day (i woke up at 1:00 and i was dead tired by 7:00). ANYWAYS. I might do a sleep study soon so. We’ll see how it goes.
Uhm, uh, the princess switch movies, 12 dates of christmas, A christmas kiss, Dash & Lilly (not a movie), A cinderella story (the christmas one), Christmas Cupid…. There’s more uhm but i can’t think of them rn.

I FINALLY SAW HAECHAN LIVE LIKE HE WAS THE ONLY NEO (except wayv ofc) that i was yet to meet and he was sosososo pretty i wanted to cry i couldn’t believe i was finally meeting the love of my life he was GLOWING (and not because of his sweat or smt like that) even tho he was a little sick i think? cause he wasn’t as playful as usual but i completely understand since he must have been so tired. we made eye contact so many times and i wanted to DIE RIGHT THERE he’s so mesmerizing and sexy and charismatic PLEASE HAECHAN JUST ONE (1) CHANCE like i could talk about him ALL DAY EVERYDAY
it was so funny to me the fact that haechan was the first one to come out when the concert started so he appeared and i SCREAMED SO MUCH i almost threw up within then first 3 minutes 😭😭😭 and the first time he went to dance in front of me and we made eye contact i literally froze ajshskdjsod like no thoughts head empty

the concert was so much fun and they are amazing performers i screamed soooo much i wish i could watch them live everyday and im happy that they didn’t break their promise of coming back soon and with haechan too (for the first time this was his fourth attempt😭) the trauma from november is now gone (lies i won’t ever recover from that time)
2. and here comes the most exciting part and i’m literally exposing my identity rn but…………………………. haechan PICKED UP MY GIFT LIKE HE ACTUALLY TOOK IT WITH HIS OWN TWO HANDS 😭😭😭😭😭😭 and also it was the only gift he actually picked up from the ground since the other two were given to him by mark and jeno (you can search the candy performance in chile and you will see it 😭😭😭😭 kinda sad he didn’t open it since inside the bag was a teddy bear baseball cap + hanging from the zipper a shinchan as michael jackson keychain that took me FOREVER to find)

4. i have a boyfriend… well not really i mean he wants to date me but i don’t feel like i love him enough and i even broke off with him last year but he just really loves me? even though i explained to him how i feel… the bad thing is that i was trying to “date” him secretly but i posted a pic of haechan on my ig that said “love of my life” so everyone started asking me who he was and shit so i had to tell them about my situansionahip because i couldn’t expose myself as a kpoppie 😭😭😭😭😭

About me there’s not much to say. Like I said I’m trying to find a job but I chose the worst field possible so it’s been hard as hell, I thought I found something but then she changed her mind after I did the trial (I was good, I was really good and she was impressed but for some reason she went from ‘being overloaded with work’ to ‘mhh you know how it is, you never know how much work you have, I can’t hire you’ lmao) and now I keep looking for something. But I’m quite fine when I don’t think too much about my future and feel like a failure lol

some thoughts about artem, the value of work and duty, and emotional neglect

slight spoilers for details revealed in main story 6.1 and several artem card stories. obligatory disclaimer that these r just my own thoughts and interpretations
i really found bryan wing super interesting because of his SUPER OP POSITION, ON THE FRIGGING SUPREME COURT (thats the whole country, THE WHOLE!!!) but also the fact that this is Literally the first time we have ever head of him across the entire main plot and, if im not mistaken, all card stories.
like, artem's mom is mentioned here and there (in SSR Por Una Cabeza, mentioned as well in another card i cant rmr where mc says artem's mom was her thesis adviser) but artem's dad? nothing. nada. zilch. it's cuz of this, i had the impression and hc that bryan wing was just Not Really Present in artem's life, and when i read his big data lab entry this one bit explains why p well
Ever since he became part of the Supreme Court, Bryan spends most of his time at the capital, returning to Stellis only in the spring.
//bangs gavel on the table court thingy, bryan wing was mostly absent for artem's life: vaguely canon.
only coming home in the spring and most probably busy as hell even when he did come home, i suspect he didnt have much time to spend with artem. while kimberly stayed in stellis and was supposedly more present, she was also probs similarly busy. shes got a doctorate by 2030 and if im going backwards, that means she was either doing masters degree or her doctorate degree during artem's childhood. at some point, she also became ASSISTANT DEAN of the law dept at stellis uni like, maam, girlboss moves tbh. but also, again, TIME. ive got a renowned practitioner doctorate haver mother myself, and when she was working on her degree back when i was a kid, she was.....not there very much. achievements take time, and they also take some time away from family. nothing wrong with that of course, but the absence causes consequences, no matter how the parent didnt mean for it to happen.
the most present adult during artem's pre-adult (and adult) era was neil hume. how artem talks about neil and that one flashback scene we get with neil actually there rlly brought it home that these two were close, they mean a LOT to each other, and rlly imparts the impression that neil was something of father figure to artem as well. but neil wasnt perfect either. neil had to bail on artem as well for work (key detail mentioned in SSR Loving Memories) and given that neil is also renowned as hell (professor, doctoral advisor) and is noted in big data lab entry to "[travel] extensively alone for his commitments to serving the public" and also "had a history of going dark to infiltrate crime organizations" hes damn busy with work as well.
and all this sounds lonely as hell for artem. all the important adults in his development years were either largely absent or still had to go off elsewhere, all due to their respective work. this kind of stuff, i think, causes a bunch things
here are the ones clear in canon
artem seeing work, productivity, and duty as huge virtues. the important adults in his life regarded it very highly, so it's logical that he values these virtues as well.
artem then pursuing these own traits diligently in his later life because it now matters to him a lot. workaholic extraordinaire who keeps going and struggles to not think of work matters or unable to relax when hes supposed to be relaxing, sometimes to the point of frigging INSOMNIA (main conflict in SSR Dreamful Melodies, this card stressed me out so much cuz //shakes artem by the shoulders, PLS SLEEP)
here are the ones where im speculating and/or making hcs
artem pursuing those values for a secondary reason too: the rewards of work become the closest thing to emotional validation hes comfortable accepting. people are busy, people cant always make time, people cant always be paying attention to him and he understands that but emotional validation is a human need and since work has become a value, its payoff is not only more feasibly acquirable, in his eyes, but also close enough to what he wants, he thinks (spoiler: it's not! it's a completely different thing!!! AAAAA)
and lastly, artem thinking it's okay to not pay attention to him as a person. there are more important things in this world. his feelings, in the grand scheme of things, takes its place several notches under the bigger things in this world
pre-entrance-of-MC-into-his-life, it's pretty sad. what artem essentially ends up doing to himself the same thing the adults in his life did to him; focusing on duty to the point that he himself neglects his wants.
this manifests his emotional repression and hesitation (how can he be honest and forward about how he feels when time and time again, those feelings didnt get proper attention?) and vaguely low self esteem (how can he feel sure about himself as a person and the value of his inherent personality without emotional validation strengthening a good view of who he is?).
this kinda reminds me of this one post i saw once that went along the lines of "in my mind, theres a little girl yelling "UNLOVED!! UNLOVED!!!!!"" and that image feels fitting for artem too with some tweaks. in his mind, theres a younger version of himself but that kid isnt yelling. hes just sitting in his room quietly and nobody outside opens the door, not even artem himself. and artem leaves him alone.
and all of that hammers it home how important mc's presence in his life is. whether it progresses into a romantic relationship or continues as a platonic one, mc eventually sees artem under the work, duty, productivity.
she goes over to stand outside of the door of that room in artem's mind nobody enters
and she knocks, asking if it's okay for her come in.
