My lesbian aunt and my bisexual self went to our local Pride parade/festival today.

About half way through the parade, my aunt started crying somewhat silently.

This perplexed me. Today is a celebration!

So, I asked her what was wrong. And she told me the story of her first pride parade in our city.

All the way back in 1991 my 20something aunt attended her first pride parade. This was only the 4th ever held in our city.

When she got there she found people corralled together behind police tape. For a while, there were more police than marchers.

They were permitted to march down the block (on the sidewalk) and come back. No more.

So they did. And they all came back to their little police barricade and protested.

My aunt was crying at Pride 2023 because there were thousands of people downtown today.

The parade went for multiple blocks, the sidewalks were packed with queer people and allies, the parade was long!

She was so afraid to come out in the 80’s and back in 91, she never dreamed Pride would become the event it has.

She was so happy.

Having to leave a lab because I dont feel safe working with strong acids on my own and that fucking group of 3 ignored me and my TA was too cowardly to do more than scowl at them for ignoring me vs my ta saying I'm doing great on grades and this shouldn't hurt me because we have one lab grade dropped
