In talking about Chaucer (p. 74), I said that, in general, puns and verbal connections of sound were unimportant and not to be sought out; and now, you will say, I have been using them to explain cruces in Shakespeare. Alas, you have touched on a sore point; this is one of the less reputable aspects of our national poet.
A quibble is to Shakespeare [Johnson could not but confess] what luminous vapours are to the traveller; he follows it at all adventures; it is sure to lead him out of his way and sure to engulf him in the mire. It has some malignant power over his mind.... A quibble was for him the fatal Cleopatra for whom he lost the world, and was content to lose it.
Nor can I hold out against the Doctor, beyond saying that life ran very high in those days, and that he does not seem to have lost the world so completely after all. It shows lack of decision and will-power, a feminine pleasure in yielding to the mesmerism of language, in getting one's way, if at all, by deceit and flattery, for a poet to be so fearfully susceptible to puns. Many of us could wish the Bard had been more manly in his literary habits, and I am afraid the Sitwells are just as bad.

i'm sorry this is so fucking funny. that pathetic loser shakespeare who loved puns so much it cost him everything, except of course his status as the most famous, most read, most immortal english-language author of all time. but everything else, he lost and it's all because of how weak he was to resist a pun :/ pouring one out for my sad little girly man who could have had it all if only he was better at writing, the thing he is the most famous guy in the world for.

also i can't get over writing a book about the types of ambiguity and NOT INCLUDING PUNS?? sorry but puns are ambiguous! that's where their juice comes from! imagine liking ambiguity so much you write a book about it but never mention puns except to dunk on them. imagine being a POET and POETRY CRITIC who looks down on sound-based ambiguity! could not be me!!

hell, i like to think so!! 😳 dan's voice lives rent-free in my head: while writing him, i legitimately imagine actual audio to go along with every word so i can figure out his cadence. his voice is deep and warm, a combination of southern and midwestern charm - i haven't found the perfect match, tbh. i can give you summations?
he's got the baritone depth of a young sam elliott (he's got them big lungs and a deep, cavernous chest this man resonates) but more of the accent of arthur morgan (without the gruff) - then just listen to all of johnny cash's "ghost riders in the sky" and you have an idea of what i hear dkhfkfh

being married, it seems. dfsdhffk dallas is actually quite a free-spirit: they're not interested in relationships beyond them forming naturally. they seek out people who are interesting, who engage with them when they talk, who carry an aura of unapologetic "i'm hot and you know it" kind of energy - they also like sweethearts who blush when they smile their way, or the nervous kinds whose hands shake on their knees while they give them lapdances.
basically, dallas is attracted to people who make them feel powerful, safe, and altogether worshipped~

@mitchmotch and i decided its not that wwx was in the business exactly, but more that he spent those 13 years trying to Find actual lwj because he loves and misses him, before getting involved with the wens distracted him until he completely lost all traces he had of lwj. so he eventually gave up the active search, but always hoped to one day hear news about him
it wasnt until things got incredibly difficult for the wens that they resolved to more desperate measures. in this au, wwx never lost his golden core, BUT he still developed mo dao as a necessity after he moved the wens to the burial mounds as the first safe place he could think of. he tries not to use mo dao too much, as he's not yet 100% sure how to ensure it doesn't fuck with his golden core OR send him into a qi deviation lol. so staying in the burial mounds is. Not The Best
this all means: he and the wens Need food and money to move somewhere far far away, Somehow. theyve got little a-yuan to take care of, after all!
so when they run into zhen yazhu(amnesiac lwj) and wwx sees the similarities and the reward, he knows what he has to do. it takes about a day and a half to convince wen qing, but she knows perfectly well they won't last much without some form of help, so she gives in. wwx tries to reassure her by saying thats totally lwj, trust me jie, if anyone knows him, its me, dont worry about it. but even he has trouble believing himself fully at first (even though it really is lwj!)

I totally agree with your point about the last few podcasts. I didn't spend way to long to find a proper option to watch IndyCar and stay at a track where I didn't feel comfortable to be called a viewer who doesn't care about racing and only watches because of drivers or something else. And to add to that I'm really tired of the underlying misogyny lately
I literally made big men leave a grandstand because i was screaming too much about Marcus, for them to talk shit like that.
I literally stopped talking to a guy who liked me because he kept saying i was watching marcus just because he was pretty and didnt care about the rest.
Okay fine for the first episodes it can be like surprising that so many female follow the podcast because they probably didnt notice it on other platforms. But now it’s fucking annoying and ridiculous and insulting. They cant get over the fact that women also are interested in the sport and want the opinions and stories of actual racing drivers???
