The Bond Between Us ~ 82
THE BOND BETWEEN US MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
< previous chapter
Word Count: 1,655ish
Summary: You and the other go back to the Resistance base to put a plan together.
Notes: Two chapters in one day! (Also, can't believe that this series is almost over! Insane!)
Tumblr media
You fell asleep almost as soon as Han helped you to a bench. He held you up against him so that you wouldn’t fall over while Chewie flew the Falcon to the Resistance base on D’Qar. Leia and he shared a worried look as they came to the realization that you were no longer as young and spry as you tried to keep being. Han explained to Leia about Rey and Finn, how he had gotten the Falcon back, and ended up on Takodana.
“Hey, kid, wake up,” Han whispered, shaking you gently.
You groaned as you woke up. Looking around, you noticed people getting off the transport. Han helped you to your feet and walked with you, following Leia, to the command center. He guided you to sit down and you thanked him with a smile. Han smiled back with a nod, eyes roaming over you to check for any injuries.
“I’m fine,” you told him.
“I don’t know think it was a smart move to fight, kid,” he worried.
“Yeah? Who would have saved your skin then?”
“Y/N…”
“Don’t worry about me, okay? I’ll be fine after I rest up.” Han sighed. He turned around and plopped next to you, staring at Leia as she conversed with a group of officers. You noticed his longing, sorrowful stare. “She missed you, you know?”
Han scoffed. “Doubt it.”
“It’s true.”
“Yeah? Well, how about you?”
You reached over and placed a hand on his knee. “Of course I did, Han. You’re family.”
“General Organa!” Poe called as he hurried up to the group with the man that had been with Han and Chewie. You and Han put your attention on the commotion. “Sorry to interrupt, this is Finn, he needs to talk to you—“
“And I need to talk to him,” Leia said, taking Finn’s hand. “That was incredibly brave, what you did. Renouncing the First Order, saving this man’s life—“
“Thank you, ma’am,” Finn responded, clearly surprised she knew. “But a friend of mine was taken prisoner—“
“Han told me about the girl, I’m sorry.”
“Finn’s familiar with the weapon that destroyed the Hosnian system,” Poe said. “He worked on the base.”
“We’re desperate for anything you can tell us.”
“That’s where my friend was taken,” said Finn. “I’ve got to get there, fast.”
You pushed yourself up from your seat and walked over, Han right behind you. “And we will do everything we can to help,” you told Finn, “but first you must tell us all you know. Including, where you found that lightsaber attached to your hip.”
That’s when Leia noticed the old saber attached at Finn’s hip.
“Maz Kanata had it,” Han responded. “It called to Rey but she refused to take it.”
“Wait…” Finn looked at you closer as he mumbled. Realization hit him, blowing his eyes wide. “You—You’re Jedi General Y/N L/N!”
“It’s Skywalker,” Han corrected at the same time Leia said, “Her name is Y/N Kenobi.”
“Doesn’t matter who I am,” you said. “That’s Anakin’s lightsaber that Luke lost on Cloud City.”
“I—I don’t—“
“Doesn’t matter about the lightsaber right now,” Leia interrupted Finn’s stuttering. “Tell us what you know about the base.”
~~~
After Finn explained what he knew, you, Han, and Leia found yourselves alone in the main command room with C3PO, BB8, and a shutdown R2D2. You watched as C3PO took a data device from BB8 and inserted it into a base computer. A map appeared on the base computer. You and Leia walked up to it, studying it. You sighed at the sight of the incomplete map.
“Generals, I regret to inform you, but this map recovered from BB8 is only partially complete,” 3PO explained. “And even worse, it matches no charted system on record. We simply do not have enough information to locate Master Luke.”
Leia shook her head as she sighed. “I can’t believe I was so foolish to think that I could just find Luke and bring him home.”
“Leia—“ Han tried.
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
Leia turned around to walk away. “Anything.”
Han looked to you for help. You simply shrugged. He started following her, though the two never left the room allowing you to what the whole interaction.
“I’m trying to be helpful!” Han argued.
“When did that ever help?” Leia retorted. “And don’t say the Death Star!”
Han sighed. “Listen to me, will you?” Leia turned. “I know every time you… every time you look at me, you’re reminded of him.”
“You think I want to forget him? I want him back!”
“There was nothing we could’ve done.” He glanced at you briefly while he said that. “There was too much Vader in him.”
“That’s why I wanted him to train with Luke… with Y/N. I just never should have sent him away. That’s when I lost him… that’s when I lost you both.”
“We both had to deal with it in our own way. I went back to the only thing I was ever good at.”
“We both did.”
They stared at each other in silence for a moment before Han spoke up again, “we lost our son, forever.”
“No… It was Snoke… he seduced our son to the dark side. But we can still save him. Me. You.”
“If Luke and Y/N couldn’t reach him, how could I?”
“Luke and Y/N are Jedi… you’re his father. There’s still light in him. I know it.”
“Generals,” General Statura interrupted, “the reconnaissance report on the enemy base is coming.”
~~~
A group of Resistance members surrounded the holo table which displayed a wireframe hologram of the surface of Starkiller Base.
“The scan data from Snap’s reconnaissance flight confirms Finn’s report,” Poe informed.
“They’ve somehow created a hyper-light speed weapon built within the planet itself,” Snap explained.
“A laser cannon?” One of the members questioned.
“We’re not sure how to describe a weapon of this scale.”
“It’s another Death Star,” you breathed out. “Just… worse.”
“I believe that’s an understatement, General Kenobi,” Poe said. He hit a button, revealing the comparison of the Death Star to the Starkiller Base. The Death Star was minuscule in comparison. “This is Starkiller Base.”
“So it’s big,” Han said, trying to lighten the mood slightly.
“How is it possible to power a weapon of this size?” Admiral Ackbar questioned.
“It uses the power of the sun,” Finn explained. “As the weapon is charged, the sun is drained until it disappears.”
Suddenly an officer ran up, handing Leia a data card. She looked at it, heart clearly sinking.
“The First Order, they’re charging thee weapon again, now,” Leia said. “Our system is the next target.”
“Oh my!” 3PO exclaimed. “Without the Republic fleet, we’re doomed.”
“Okay, how do we blow it up?” Han asked. “There’s always a way to do that.”
“Han’s right,” Leia said, surprising her husband.
“In order for that amount of power to be contained, that base would need some kind of thermal oscillator,” you said.
“There is one,” Finn responded, moving the hologram to show a location on the base. “Precinct 47. Here.”
“If you can destroy that oscillator, it might destabilize the core and cripple the weapon… maybe the planet.”
“We’ll go in there and we’ll hit that oscillator with everything we got,” Poe said, very gun-ho.
“It’s not that easy Dameron. There’s a defensive shield that our ships can’t penetrate.”
“We disable the shields,” Han stated, a matter of factly. He looked to Finn. “Big Deal, you worked there, what do you got?”
“I can do it,” Finn confirmed.
“I like this guy.”
“I can disable the shields. But I have to be there, on the planet.”
“We’ll get you there.”
“Han, how?” Leia questioned.
“If I told you, you wouldn’t like it.”
“So we disable the shields, take out the oscillator and we blow up their big gun,” Poe confirmed. “Alright! Let’s go!”
~~~
Han, Chewie, and Finn were working on the Falcon when you finally got the strength to go out there. You had a bad feeling about the mission—specifically Han’s part in it and you wanted to do what you could to keep him safe.
“I’m coming with you,” you stated.
“No,” Han turned to you, shaking his head. “Not a chance. You barely had the strength to fight the way you did.”
“Han, I’m fine. Besides, I have a bad feeling about this and—“
“Then you’re definitely not going.”
“You’ll need my help.”
“Y/N,” he placed his hands on your arms, “you need to stay here.”
“I can save him, Han,” you whispered, getting emotional. “I wasn’t able to be the Chosen One and bring balance, but at least let me bring him back. Let me bring Ben home.”
“What happened to Ben wasn’t your fault. You couldn’t have prevented it.” He leaned over and kissed your forehead. “It’s going to be okay.” He smiled as he pulled back. “It’s me.” He stepped away and turned to go back to the Falcon.
“No matter how much we fought,” Leia’s voice caused Han to stop, “I’ve always hated watching you leave.” She came to stand beside you.
Han turned around. “That’s why I did it. So you’d miss me.”
Leia laughed and moved closer to Han. “I did miss you.”
“It wasn’t all bad, was it? Huh? Some of it was… good.”
“Pretty good.”
“Somethings never change.”
Leia smiled. “True. You still drive me crazy.” Han placed his hands on her shoulders. They stared at each other briefly before pulling each other in tightly, holding for dear life. “If you see our son again, bring him home.”
“I will.” He pulled back, looking at you and Leia. “I’ll bring him home.”
Leia slipped her arm through yours as the two of you watched Han go over and enter the Falcon. You followed it as it lifted up and flew off, disappearing into space.
Homestuck Daily - Week 2 - 4/27/2024
Last week was a real fucking mess. I wrote it a day late and I barely talked about the contents of the comic or my thoughts of it. I swore to myself that this week, I would get my head in the game. I would take notes on each day of comics, I'd pick out highlights I could talk about for the next update. I'd really do my best to give thoughtful insight into this comic. And then, as if Homestuck itself was mocking me from 15 years in the past, this was the slowest week of homestuck yet. 12 pages from 4/22/2024 to as I'm typing this. We'll get to those pages in a second, but first a bit of housekeeping.
I have previously mentioned I've scheduled out about which pages I would be reading which days, for up to about the first year of this project's runtime. This was a terrible idea, and I've deleted the calendar and replaced it with a daily reminder to check the Unofficial Homestuck Collection for updates. I would like to say this was to maintain verisimilitude for this project, but that would be at least partially a lie. The truth is that as this project began, I quickly learned the original schedule I wrote out was rather inaccurate, usually missing the last few updates of the day due to what I assume is a time zone difference. Fixing that schedule, or creating a new one from scratch, would be way too much effort, so I decided to throw away the gift and curse of knowledge. I plunge into the future of this project without a map or checklist.
Now, for a map or checklist of what happened this week in Homestuck. There was of course, Shenanigans, which I think I might create a separate section to discuss Shenanigans. A Plot-Recap and a Shenanigans Recap. But that discussion belongs in housekeeping, and this is the recap... as much of a recap that's possible with 12 pages. This week, John breaks the premise of this comic by exiting his house in search of the SBURB Beta. We get an iconic title-drop for the Comic with a short flash of John contemplating his 13th birthday and the feeling of something missing. He sees a mysterious green package and a piece of paper in his dad's car, but otherwise the beta is nowhere to be seen. He heads back inside, and spies a red package and a piece of paper with SBURB's Logo in the kitchen. John finally decides to enter the kitchen in order to confront his cake-wielding father, and we get our dramatic introduction to Dad. As of writing this, the week of updates ends with the calm before the storm of John facing his ferocious father in a fight.
As for shenanigans... uhhhh John watches an Ecto-Cooler commercial after really fucking up a card trick. Also he resists the urge to poop in his mailbox. This week is light on content on all fronts, I guess.
Before I go, I'd like to talk for a little bit about page 82 of Homestuck, the 2nd [S] of the comic that ends with a title card for the comic itself. I remember this page grabbing my attention when I first read this comic years ago. I'm not sure how quickly that past-me got to that page, but I remember thinking "Ah, the comic starts now." I think I assumed it must have released rather soon after the comic's start, but as the present-me reads this comic in real time, I realize it was released about 11 days after Homestuck began. That's a small percentage of the entire comic, certainly, but for me, I am realizing that a moment that I've considered the Beginning of Homestuck took nearly 2 weeks to get to. Not for the first time, I am hit with the monumental scale of the project ahead of me. A project I am doing for nobody but myself. I think about why I've decided to re-read Homestuck, and why I am documenting my re-read here. I think about the kind of person I was 7 years ago, and the kind of person I might be 7 years from now. I think about how many ways my life may change before I finish this. To paraphrase Walt Whitman, 'I realize today is going to be a long day.'
Alrighty, here are games 90 to 81 on my list! If you haven't read part one yet, the link's under this sentence now! Here we go!
Link to part 1. Link to part 3. Link to part 4. Link to part 5. Link to part 6. Link to part 7. Link to part 8. Link to part 9. Link to part 10.
90. Saints Row IV
Tumblr media
I love the Saints Row series, and Saints Row IV is my favorite of the Steelport games, because of the ridiculousness of it all and meta aspects. I do love meta when it's done right. Also, the flight mechanics just flow perfectly. The gameplay is fantastic, as well.
89. Serious Sam 2
Tumblr media
Damn, I love Serious Sam, obviously, and Sam's third adventure (though second game since The First Encounter and The Second Encounter are part of the same game, that's how I reference it) is wacky, insane, and just a blast. You don't have to care about the story, because the game doesn't care about the story, it's just silly. It's not my favorite favorite, but it's still good.
88. Prison Architect
Tumblr media
Ah, the building genre, one of my favorites. Prison Architect takes the familiar formula and applies it to prison building. You really need to keep track of your inmates and guards, and make sure no one dies. The story mode isn't too bad either, it helps you learn the mechanics of the game.
87. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero
Tumblr media
Shantae, Shantae, Shantae. I love me some Shantae, and Half-Genie Hero is great. This is the best game to start with if you've never played the franchise. It's not a true metroidvania, but that helps players acclimatize to the style of gameplay.
86. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Tumblr media
Ah, Bloodlines. It's an underrated cult classic that's been fixed up by its unofficial patch, and it's a great RPG that has wonderful characters and multiple endings. The voice work is great too, getting some real talent like Grey DeLisle and John DiMaggio. Definitely get this if you're into RPGs.
85. Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards
Tumblr media
Sierra adventure games are just good, for the most part, and the first Leisure Suit Larry is a fine, if short, game. The remakes aren't too bad either, so go with any version.
84. Theme Park
Tumblr media
Ah, Peter Molyneux. One of those creators you have to wonder if they had any talent at all nowadays because of their lies. But in the Bullfrog days, he could actually pull his games off, and Theme Park proved that, especially with the code being written by Demis Hassabis. It's a hardcore management sim with a whimsical coat of paint, and one you shouldn't miss.
83. The Outer Worlds
Tumblr media
One of Obsidian's better RPGs, The Outer Worlds takes the Fallout formula, transplants it into space instead of Post-Apocalypsia, and makes a great RPG. While it was partially Epic-delayed (I played it on Game Pass first.), it's still a fun adventure.
82. Blood
Tumblr media
I live, again. One of the holy trilogy of Build Engine titles, Blood is as great as Duke or Shadow Warrior, and has its own personality, with Caleb being more “evil” than Duke or Lo Wang. It's basically a Villain Protagonist against an even eviler group, to use TV Tropes language.
81. Hotline Miami
Tumblr media
“Do you like hurting other people?” It's a question asked a lot in Hotline Miami. Sure, you feel exhilarated while taking on each level, but you have to walk back through your carnage with a drone of dread. Add the mind-screw of the story and you have one unique game.
Part 3 will be up tomorrow! :D
Link to part 1. Link to part 3. Link to part 4. Link to part 5. Link to part 6. Link to part 7. Link to part 8. Link to part 9. Link to part 10.
Before the fall of the empire, the Gravelstoke family were the envy of high society. Holding a dozen estates and immense authority and power, they even counted the emperor among their close friends, and as such may have been the most powerful non-royal family.
A large part of this power came from the hidden fact that the Gravelstokes weren't simply regular nobility, but were actually a long family of assassins that served the emperor directly. Their service to the crown ensured they always had support, protection, and money, letting them improve their bloody trade to utter perfection.
With the fall of the old empire, the Gravelstoke's fortunes fell as well. Having no single patron who could support them further and with the utter collapse of the social structures that afforded them so much power, they have shrunk down in the years to a single remaining branch in the Vale. Now, the family seeks to rebuild in this new world, training members with their old techniques and seeking out old friends and new clients.
Originally from the 4e Monster Vault: Threats to the Nentir Vale. This post came out a week ago on my Patreon. If you want to get access to all my monster conversions early, as well as a copy of my premade adventure Rampage of the Map Backed Spider, consider backing me there!
Color Symbolism in Marble Hornets
[this is an excerpt from a larger project im working on where i go through entry by entry and take note of all the symbolism but i was really excited to notice this today and want to share ahead of time! my source is the mh wardrobe post i made a while back]
Alex’s most definitive color is blue and Brian is most often seen in greens and blues, while Tim and Jay typically wear reds or browns. This isn't a hard and fast rule necessarily, but just by looking at the majority of wardrobe colors, you can gain the association that there is a warm/cool color dichotomy is fairly straightforward to what role the character is taking (or what role they appear to be taking) at the moment, with reds, browns, and oranges showing victimization and lack of power, and blues and greens showing the opposite.
The most interesting conclusions actually come from when characters break their associated color palettes, because it almost always coincides with the character breaking their usual role in the story as well. Starting with Tim, in the last few entries he is seen wearing cool colored flannels while trying to finish Jay’s investigation, but in Entry #87 he’s back to his typical red flannel, representing his emotional journey through the depression and turmoil of losing Jay, finishing his mission, and resolving to move on. Tim also wears blue in Entry #75, a time when he is trying to hide something from Jay. Of course, his heart was in the right place all along, but to the audience’s (and Jay’s) perspective at the time, he was hiding something that incriminated him. This same mask applies in Entries #52 and #53, where he has yet to become a full character to the plot and appears extremely suspicious. He is also wearing blue in #59, where he punches and chews out Jay for what he’s done, blaming him for what happened. While he is partially right, he also is once again taking on a narrative role similar to Alex in that moment.
Others have noticed this before, but Entry #82 is the last chronological time Jay is seen wearing brown, and afterwards is seen wearing a bright green shirt, showing how the encounter changed his mental state from one of the victim to one seeking to harm Tim for what he had hidden, never breaking out of that mindset of hurt and anger and ultimately not even getting to die as himself. The only times Jay is seen wearing the green shirt that marks him as “changed” before his encounter with the Operator in #82 is in Entries #35 and 36 (where he helps tie up Masky and then still agrees to follow Alex’s lead afterwards), 48 (this time literally following Alex, straight up stalking him), and 75 (where he steals Tim’s tape). Entry #75 is particularly interesting, because he walks out of therapy wearing green, showing us that the help he got came just a moment too late. Tim is also wearing blue in this Entry, appearing as an Alex-like enemy to Jay, while unbeknownst to him in green, he’s still following Alex’s lead and doing what he would’ve done. The only times Jay is seen wearing blue (without his brown hoodie covering it up as an undershirt) are in Entry #50, where he breaks into Alex’s house and steals a tape from him, and of greater note, in Entry #74 where he refuses Tim’s help.
Alex is seen wearing an orange-pinkish shirt in Entries #42, 46, 47, 71, and 76, all times when he was trying to trick others into believing he was the hero and victim. The only time Alex wears white is during Entry #14, where he inflicts the stigmata upon himself, believing himself to be an almost Christ-like figure, pure and victimized. In Entry #55, he is wearing a red shirt, footage of him taken when Tim is explaining his medical history in the background, appearing as a victim of Tim’s monster. All other times in the series he is wearing a cool color palette.
The only time Brian wears warm colors is in Entry #51, where he is quite literally victimized, and in all entries where he is acting as Hoodie, the red bleach stains on his mask just a sad face painted on over a manipulator, making himself out as someone who is just a powerless victim while secretly pulling strings and toying Jay’s investigation along. His majority cool-colored wardrobe also relates him to Alex, and once again shows their narrative parallels.
Meanwhile, Jessica is almost always wearing black and white, and the colors she does wear are perfectly evenly split between warm and cool (wearing a red shirt once, a blue cardigan once, and a purple blouse once). This likely refers to how out of place she is in the story, a bystander caught in the crossfire. Meanwhile in her comic spinoff, she typically wears a brown and red uniform, only wearing other colors when wearing a purple blouse in an opening page (neutral in the color dichotomy), and blue while in the hospital (during which she lies about the issues she’s facing and snaps at Taylor). Her development into wearing brown and red (Jay’s signature colors) shows how she’s developed into the protagonist of her own life, becoming used to dealing with the issues she’s victimized by. However, in Issue 3, she’s back to her black and white attire as she rewatches the Marble Hornets entries and discovers her past, showing how she’s out of her element once more (I could analyze the comics more, but I’m waiting for all issues to be released first, so back to what this color coding actually means).
The warm/cool color dichotomy also relates to the fire/water parallels set up, but interestingly in the opposite direction as typical color associations, with reds typically associated with fire (danger, the Operator) and blues typically associated with water (safety, the ark). However, the color symbolism, instead of being one to one, could instead line up if taken to mean that warm colors that symbolize victimization show that the characters are closer to danger, and the cool colors that symbolize power and aggression show that the characters have more control over the situation and are therefore technically safer, despite the moral implications of what that power really means in action.
Warnings: violence, blood, realism in comics, me mentioning things stans want to ignore to make a point, you don't have to consider them canon, I'm just making a point don't hurt me
Right. Been seeing dialog about Jason's decision to give up guns that i feel is missing a few points.
1. Bruce is traumatized by guns. Yeah he jumps in the line of fire every night but that doesn't mean he isn't scared of/triggered by them:
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Oracle!Babs and Robin!Tim roll/walk through the clocktower. Babs: (about guns) Hates them. But doesn't fear them. Tim: Not the way he jumps in the line of fire night after night. Babs: Line of fire... Babs: I was afraid of them for a long time. I'd go faint at the sight of a gun on TV. Tim: You have reasons, Barbara. So does Batman. Babs: But I. worked through them. Babs: Maybe Bruce hasn't. Maybe he's not the rock we thought he was. Tim: He bought a gun as therapy? Babs: Look at the facts. He bought it just like any other citizen. Like he wanted to experience it as someone else would. Tim: I don't think- Computer: Keyword media search alert. Tim: What's that? End ID]
Birds of Prey (1998) #40
Bruce's opposition of guns is partially based in trauma - it's not completely a moral stance or completely logical rule. Jason giving up guns is for himself, but it allows him to be closer to Bruce and for Bruce to be more relaxed in his presence -> can make their relationship closer.
2. [X] weapon isn't even lethal. Getting cut/hurt + no health care = possible death from infection -> shooting a henchman with regular bullets in the foot can be lethal. Or cutting them with a batarang.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A girl walks home getting off the school bus. Girl: "Mama, I know you don't want to hear this, but --" She opens the door to an empty run down house. Girl: "Mama? Mama are you --?" She opens up the bathroom door, revealing her mother sweating and bleeding out on the ground, trying to press a towel to a wound on her side. Her mom is wearing a henchman outfit for the H.I.V.E. Girl: "Mama!" Mom: "Why -- Why are you home so soon?" The girl holds her mom in a sitting position. Girl: "This isn't the flu. You said you had the flu." Mom: "I -- I will be better soon. I just need to rest." Girl: "You need a hospital, mama." Mom: "No. If they find out -- they'll take you away from me. Send me back to Guatemala." The final panel shows a wisp of Ravens cape, the view zoomed out. Girl: "I know you want to protect me, but you need help now -- no matter what happens later." Raven: "Maybe I can help." End ID]
Titans: Titans Together #4
Similarly could ppl stop acting like rubber bullets are non lethal, everything the batfam uses can be lethal and cause scenes like above. Literally none of them can claim moral high ground they've all thrown batarangs in people's faces (off the top of my head, Jason nailed Dick with one in the face in BoC and Bruce got Jason in the neck in UTRH so there's the two characters at odds).
3. Jason/Bruce has never hurt an undeserving person. Jason isn't a mass murderer and you're slandering him. Bruce is the best dad ever you're an idiot for thinking otherwise.
...did you miss the times he tried to kill Tim? Or sprayed Dick with fear gas? Or shot Damian in the chest (not rubber bullets mind you). All of this happened in Battle of the Cowl. He poisoned 82 prisoners indiscriminately in Batman and Robin (2009) #23, went around killing random "thugs" in Brothers in Blood arc of Nightwing. Is it slander if he did it? Idk. If anyone can answer that lmk but everything is canon now so the point is moot.
And let me also say if everythings canon Bruce has also hurt/hit/abused his family (i don't have the specific issue numbers but runs that I've seen bad dad Bruce in are The New Titans, Batgirl (2000), Nightwing (1996), Tom Kings crap, RHATO rebirth, etc. I don't feel like going into detail but if hard pressed i will) don't try to paint me as a Bruce or Jason apologist/hater please
Also literally see the panel above 💀 the mom is an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala with an engineering degree she can't use because the US gov is literally fucking flaming garbage, so she had to take that job to provide for her daughter. Quit thinking extrajudicial murder/vigilantism is a woke take. No. Stop. Bad. Criminals have rights for a reason.
Can you choose to call the above things Jason and Bruce have done ooc and bad writing. Yep. Go ahead, be my guest. Just it's weird to me that ppl always seem to do it for one character and not the other. Like... that's not productive dialogue? And yeah both Jason and Bruce stans do this i just happened to see a post from a Jason stan so he got to be shamed first. If you think i think my fave is wrong, i literally made a post publically shaming him at one point, and wrote an entire fic dedicated to me pointing out why i think characters would hate him the most 🤷‍♀️ if someone read a comic that shows your fave in a bad light don't call them stupid for not liking that character just point them in the right direction and if you don't want to. Don't. Just block them. I'm tired of watching ppl act like their better than each other because they don't consider things canon (unless you stan a minority character and don't consider their racist/sexist writing canon in which case, same, you're the best ppl in this fandom)💀 or referencing fanon as canon and telling ppl to go read more comics 💀
Anyways the takeaways I've come out with are, this debate between the two is more than just morals, they've both wronged each other, and trying to simplify it down into victim and abuser is just - missing nuance and ignoring their full histories in my opinion and kinda just ends up flattening both characters and making both of them less relatable
This week I want to tell you about the case of Henry Molaison, the most well-studied amnesia case in history. It may be a long one but it’s definitely worth it so strap in.
Henry, who would later become known as ‘H.M.’, was your average American guy born in Manchester, Connecticut in 1926. At the age of seven, he got into an accident on his bicycle, hitting his head and causing brain damage. From then on he began suffering minor or partial seizures with the doctors diagnosing him with epilepsy. As time went on he grew older, and not long after his 16th birthday, his seizures started to become more severe. He began working on an assembly line at a factory but by the time he was 27 his seizures became so severe that even with medication he could no longer continue to lead a normal life.
In 1953, because of this, he was referred to a neurosurgeon called William Beecher Scoville. Scoville managed to determine (although I couldn’t find out how) that Henry’s epilepsy was coming from the ‘medial temporal lobes' on both sides of his brain and, due to how badly it affected his life, recommended surgical removal. This included the entirety of his hippocampus as well as most of the amygdala. Some other areas also died off later because of the surgery. At the time, very little was known about the brain and how it functioned. When the doctors and researchers took out these areas they had little idea of what other effects this may have on him.
Now, of course, you may already know what the hippocampus is known for and expect what is coming next. The researchers, however, did not. For Henry, the day of the surgery is the day his life stopped. He could remember his childhood, most everyone in his life, and a lot of information about the world around them. He could not, however, form any new memories from that point onwards. Someone could walk into the room and introduce themselves, walk out, and once they returned Henry would have no recollection of who they were. For him, every moment from then on in his mind took place directly after his surgery. Nobody had ever seen anything like it.
Scoville, the neurosurgeon, and his researching partner, Brenda Milner, began to study him immediately. They made him do hundreds and hundreds of memory tests, trying to pinpoint exactly where his memory was strong and where it was failing. Eventually, they realised there was some memory loss from the decade leading up to the surgery, getting worse the closer it got to it. His short-term memory, however, appeared to be working pretty well, but he could not store them to remember things later. The results of their studies were published to the world, a condition which was called and is still known as ‘anterograde amnesia’.
This revolutionised a large part of the field of neuroscience. Because the details of the loss of brain areas were known researchers could find out exactly how the hippocampus was involved in memory, and what types of memory other brain areas must have done instead. He showed, in particular, that he could still learn motor skills and remember them, that he had problems with sentence and language comprehension, and that his spatial awareness and memory was severely damaged. Researchers and scientists of all types flooded in from around the world to study the patient known as H.M. For the next five decades, he would spend the vast majority of his time undergoing these studies, and while researchers told him of how he could be revolutionizing medicine he could never remember it himself. He lived a long life, dying at the age of 82 in 2008 and donating his brain to science, providing even more research to continue on him after his death.
While it is easy to get caught up in the science of this case it’s actually a very sad story of a man named Henry, who went to doctors to seek help and it caused the end of his life as he knew it. He was always willing to be researched and consented every time, but ethically looking at it he could never remember all the years where that was all he did. While he may not have been outwardly suffering I doubt we can say that if Henry could have been aware of his situation then he wouldn’t have wanted to spend the vast majority of his life as a subject of scientific study. However, he should be remembered. What scientists did learn from him completely changed, and most importantly improved, our understanding of brain function. Moreover, others who came after him with their own neurological issues would receive better treatment because of what he went through.
So, to Henry Molaison, neurosciences most famous patient!
Catechism of the Catholic Church
X. Indulgences
1471 The doctrine and practice of indulgences in the Church are closely linked to the effects of the sacrament of Penance.
What is an indulgence?
"An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints."81 "An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin."82 Indulgences may be applied to the living or the dead.
The punishments of sin
1472 To understand this doctrine and practice of the Church, it is necessary to understand that sin has a double consequence. Grave sin deprives us of communion with God and therefore makes us incapable of eternal life, the privation of which is called the "eternal punishment" of sin. On the other hand every sin, even venial, entails an unhealthy attachment to creatures, which must be purified either here on earth, or after death in the state called Purgatory. This purification frees one from what is called the "temporal punishment" of sin. These two punishments must not be conceived of as a kind of vengeance inflicted by God from without, but as following from the very nature of sin. A conversion which proceeds from a fervent charity can attain the complete purification of the sinner in such a way that no punishment would remain.83
1473 The forgiveness of sin and restoration of communion with God entail the remission of the eternal punishment of sin, but temporal punishment of sin remains. While patiently bearing sufferings and trials of all kinds and, when the day comes, serenely facing death, the Christian must strive to accept this temporal punishment of sin as a grace. He should strive by works of mercy and charity, as well as by prayer and the various practices of penance, to put off completely the "old man" and to put on the "new man."84
In the Communion of Saints
1474 The Christian who seeks to purify himself of his sin and to become holy with the help of God's grace is not alone. "The life of each of God's children is joined in Christ and through Christ in a wonderful way to the life of all the other Christian brethren in the supernatural unity of the Mystical Body of Christ, as in a single mystical person."85
1475 In the communion of saints, "a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things."86 In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits others, well beyond the harm that the sin of one could cause others. Thus recourse to the communion of saints lets the contrite sinner be more promptly and efficaciously purified of the punishments for sin.
1476 We also call these spiritual goods of the communion of saints the Church's treasury, which is "not the sum total of the material goods which have accumulated during the course of the centuries. On the contrary the 'treasury of the Church' is the infinite value, which can never be exhausted, which Christ's merits have before God. They were offered so that the whole of mankind could be set free from sin and attain communion with the Father. In Christ, the Redeemer himself, the satisfactions and merits of his Redemption exist and find their effficacy."87
1477 "This treasury includes as well the prayers and good works of the Blessed Virgin Mary. They are truly immense, unfathomable, and even pristine in their value before God. In the treasury, too, are the prayers and good works of all the saints, all those who have followed in the footsteps of Christ the Lord and by his grace have made their lives holy and carried out the mission the Father entrusted to them. In this way they attained their own salvation and at the same time cooperated in saving their brothers in the unity of the Mystical Body."88
Obtaining indulgence from God through the Church
1478 An indulgence is obtained through the Church who, by virtue of the power of binding and loosing granted her by Christ Jesus, intervenes in favor of individual Christians and opens for them the treasury of the merits of Christ and the saints to obtain from the Father of mercies the remission of the temporal punishments due for their sins. Thus the Church does not want simply to come to the aid of these Christians, but also to spur them to works of devotion, penance, and charity.89
1479 Since the faithful departed now being purified are also members of the same communion of saints, one way we can help them is to obtain indulgences for them, so that the temporal punishments due for their sins may be remitted.
Ray and Faye Copeland: Oldest Couple on Death Row
Tumblr media
May 04, 2021
Ray Copeland was born on December 30, 1914 in Oklahoma. Ray’s family growing up moved around a lot, until his parents Jess and Laney settled in the town of Ozark Hills, Arkansas. Ray eventually had a younger brother and sister. However, when the Great Depression hit Ray had to help support his family during this tough time where most families were struggling to make ends meet.
Ray began a life of petty crime as a young man. At the age of 20 he committed his first crime, stealing two hogs from his family farm and selling them in another town. His father found out but no charges were filed. He was often stealing livestock and forging checks and was eventually caught for this in 1936 and served a year in prison.
In 1940 Ray went to a routine checkup at a physician’s office met a 19 year old woman named Faye Wilson. Faye Della Wilson was born on August 4, 1921 in Arkansas. Faye’s parents Rufus and Gladys Wilson were very hard working people from Harrison, Arkansas and Faye was one of 7 children, growing up in a dirt floor cabin. The two began dating and 6 months later got married and had five children together. Their first child was a boy named Everett, born a year after they got married. Then two years later they had another son named Billy Ray.
In 1944 Ray and Faye moved to Fresno County, California and had another child, a girl named Betty Lou the following year. After that they had a son named Alvia and in 1949 they had their final child, William Wayne. That same year Ray had been accused of stealing horses from a local farmer. No charges were filed but Ray had to leave the area because his reputation was damaged, so the Copeland’s moved back to Arkansas.
It didn’t take long for Ray to get arrested again, being found guilty of grand larceny and sentenced to another year in jail. Once released Ray moved his family to Rocky Comfort, Missouri where he was arrested for cattle theft again. He was sentenced to complete labour at a judge’s farm.
In 1953 Ray moved his family from town to town quite frequently, and was arrested at least 5 times for writing forged checks. In 1966 (some sources say 1967) the couple bought a 40 acre farm in Mooresville, Missouri. A lot of the Copeland neighbours did not like Ray, thinking he was a bitter elderly man who physically abused his family, though Faye and the children denied this.
 Ray was unable to buy and sell cattle due to his criminal record and being known as a fraud so he would pick up drifters and hitchhikers and employ them to work as farmhands on his and Faye’s property. Ray would take his employees to the market, they would use his bad checks to buy cattle and then Ray would sell the cattle quickly. The farmhands would never been seen again after the transaction. This plan worked for a period of time before one of the scam victims, Gerald Perkins exposed the scheme. Ray was caught once again and sent to jail for two years for check forgery.
When Ray was released he continued on with this plan, but tweaked it a little bit, making sure his farmhands couldn’t be as easily connected to him. Again, this worked for a little while until a previous employee named Jack McCormick called the Crime Stoppers hotline on August 20, 1989.
Jack told them that Ray had tried to kill him and that he also had seen human bones on their farm while he was working for the Copelands. The police weren’t sure if they could believe Jack but because Ray had a lengthy criminal history they investigated further into this claim.
In October 1989 they searched the Copeland farm with a search warrant but did not find any incriminating evidence at first. After they searched further, however, they did come across the bodies of three young men found in a nearby barn. As they continued searching they found many more bodies, all had been killed with a .22 caliber Marlin rifle found in the Copeland home. They also found a quilt made out of clothes worn by the victims.
Ray had been caught killing his employees to gain money and in November 1990, Faye also went to trial with the jury convicting her of four counts of murder and one count of manslaughter. She was given four death sentences and life without parole for the manslaughter. They offered Faye a plea deal, telling her that if she showed them where more bodies were buried they would only charge her with conspiracy to commit murder, a lesser charge. Faye covered for her husband.
On March 7 1991, Ray Copeland went on trial and was convicted of 5 counts of murder and sentenced to death. When Ray heard that his wife Faye had also been sentenced to death he said, “Well, those things happen to some, you know.” He showed no emotion.
Ray and Faye Copeland were the oldest people to ever receive the death penalty, with Ray being 75 and Faye being 69 at the time of their sentencing. Both were sentenced to die by lethal injection.
Ray died of natural causes on October 19, 1993 at the age of 78. Faye’s attorneys appealed her conviction, saying that the jury had not been allowed to hear of evidence that Ray had abused her. On August 6, 1999 a judge overturned the death sentence, commuting her sentence to 5 consecutive life sentences without parole.
On August 10, 2002, Faye had a stroke which left her partially paralyzed and unable to speak. In September 2002, Governor Bob Holden gave permission for Faye to have a medical parole, that is she would not die in prison but rather be sent to a nursing home in Chillicothe, Missouri. Faye Copeland died of natural causes on December 23, 2003 at the age of 82.
All of the Copeland’s victims had been shot execution style and all of them had either been buried on the property or on another property where Ray used a barn. One victim, Dennis Murphy, was dumped in a well. Faye had kept track of all the victims, writing their names on a list and if they had murdered the man there would be an X written beside his name.
Here is a list of the known victims of the Copeland’s:
Paul Jason Cowart, aged 21 - killed on October 17, 1986
John Freeman, aged 27 - killed on November 19, 1986
Jimmie Dale Harvey, aged 27 - killed on October 25, 1988
Wayne Warner, unknown age - killed on December 8, 1988
Dennis Murphy, aged 27 - killed on May 1, 1989
Jack McCormick, aged 57 - attempted murder on August 20, 1989
The Copeland’s have been suspected in murdering 7 additional drifters.
There is no fucking way he is going through with this plan to pass along the Entities.
If you listened to The Magnus Archives, you remember Peter Lukas’s plan to start a Lonely ritual with a terrible residential building and how Gertrude foiled it with newspaper coverage.  Well, it turns out life imitates horror podcast!
Two doors, few windows and 4,500 students: Architect quits over billionaire’s mega dorm
(Link goes to a Washington Post article. There is also quality coverage of this story from the local paper The Santa Barbara Independent, which didn’t seem to have a paywall).
So the University of California Santa Barbara has plans to alleviate its campus housing shortage by building an 11-story dorm to house 4,500 students in single rooms, 94% of which will have no windows. This building is partially funded by a 97 year-old billionaire/hobbyist architect, who made his donation on the condition that his blueprints be followed exactly. Even without the Peter Lukas parallels, that is super shady!
This is getting coverage because an actual professional architect resigned from UCSB’s design review committee in protest, writing in a letter of resignation “As the ‘vision’ of a single donor, the building is a social and psychological experiment with an unknown impact on the lives and personal development of the undergraduates the university serves”  and calling the plan “unsupportable from my perspective as an architect, a parent, and a human being.”
Setting fandom parallels aside for the moment, I will note that Santa Barbara has super pleasant weather almost all year, so in theory students could just spend lots of time outside if their windowless living space bugs them. But what if they have to go inside because of, say, dangerous air quality from nearby mega wildfires? Or if they are trying to write a paper but something like, hypothetically speaking, a global pandemic restricts their use of shared spaces on campus? Then they’re stuck in a tiny windowless solitary box! Given the issues around student mental health at universities across the country, and given how much just seeing natural light and green growing things is hugely beneficial to humans’ mental state, this seems like an astonishingly terrible plan. I also worry about the fact that light and ventilation in here will be completely reliant on electricity, which could become less reliable as global climate change increases the frequency of disruptions from storms, fires, etc. Of course a massive, expensive building like this will be around for decades if built.
So, this attention is enough to get the building cancelled or redesigned, right? So far, nope! Plans are going forward. It appears that the unrealistic part of The Magnus Archives was the idea that negative press coverage could change anything about a building that is obviously hostile to human existence. Gosh living in the 2020s is exciting!
One frustrating part about The Magnus Archives being an audio-based fandom is that there are no screencaps of where people sat in the Archives to give live statements, and thus nobody has photoshopped Bernie Sanders in his mittens and sturdy coat into sitting there.
I just have to visualize the crowded desk, the tape recorder, probably a mug of tea, Jon staring hungrily…and Bernie, looking somewhat annoyed that this statement on how he survived an encounter with spooky evil is taking so long and now he isn’t sure if he’ll make it to the post office before they shut.
Concept: A streaming service releases a movie about a person caught in a time loop that ends not with breaking the time loop, but with the protagonist reaching peace with the new condition of their life, making a point of finding joy in small things and doing good works even if they don’t last.
It was a pretty good movie, so when you have a friend over who you think would like it, you watch the movie again. About 2/3 way through the movie, something starts feeling off. You didn’t exactly memorize the movie the first time, but it feels like some scenes are going differently. As the movie goes on, you become more and more certain that it’s not the same. The ending is definitely different. The protagonist still ends the film trapped in the time loop, but this time they’re in despair about it. This ending emphasizes the futility of trying to change controlling systems and the way people’s fundamental natures trap them in destructive cycles.
 You’re initially shocked not to see the movie you expected, but you realize that it must have two alternate versions, shown either randomly or in some designated order depending on how many times you’ve viewed the film. You wonder if there’s more than two versions, so you watch it again.
Broadly speaking, it seems like the same film you watched the first time, but even though you can’t put your finger on any specific changes, it feels a bit different, like maybe the film’s editor used different takes. In the jubilant final scene, you realize that the protagonist isn’t wearing a snazzy leather jacket like you remember, but instead a button-down shirt with sleeves rolled up their forearms.
 The fourth time you watch it, you get the grim ending again, except this time in the final scene the protagonist isn’t crying silently while staring into the distance, but wailing while covering their face with their hands.
 The fifth viewing, the protagonist goes mad by the end, though the film is clear that they’re mad within a time loop rather than imagining a time loop due to madness. The sixth time, the mood of the ending is stoic resignation.
 You finally get online to look for information about this film. There’s plenty of people talking about the film and its different versions. The streaming service has implemented some super-advanced anti-piracy technology, so no one can save clips, and even trying to use another device to film a tv showing the movie seems to just result in weird static. That makes it impossible for people to compare footage from their versions and figure out exactly how many there are, but it’s clear there are lots.
The director and cast did some publicity before the film was released, talking about the characters and the setting, but there was no mention of alternate versions. They haven’t done any press since the release. One person online claims to have run into the director at a Starbucks in Malibu and asked whether there were any alternate endings where the movie’s protagonist escapes the time loop.
“The structure of storytelling, at least as we understand it in Western culture, always calls for an ending,” the director said with a wink, then slipped out the door, clutching a triple-shot hazelnut latte. The online person reporting this encounter didn’t realize until too late that that wasn’t actually an answer.
You watch the movie again and again, usually several times a week. You take notes each time so you can better spot the differences. You start changing how you watch it: different times of day, on different devices, with different settings. Maybe there’s a trick to control which version you’ll get. It’s never exactly the same twice. (Just how long did they spend filming all these versions? You can’t find any information about the lead actors working on any new projects.) The repetition and lack of resolution are maddening, but every time you decide you’re done with watching this movie you only make it a few days before you give in and watch it again. You keep hoping to find the ending where the time loop breaks, but it never happens.
Finally, in frustration, you open a document on your computer. You stay up until 4 am furiously typing. Eventually you have it: a new version of the latter half of the movie where the protagonist successfully breaks the time loop. Your ending is true to both with the film’s worldbuilding and the protagonist’s character. It’s big and triumphant. You can’t remember the last time you felt so satisfied.
You go to sleep. The next day, you open up the streaming site. Your cursor lingers on the time loop movie you’ve watched so many times before, but instead you select a teen rom com that looks like it will take absolutely no narrative risks. You feel free.
The day after that, you have an idea for how the time loop film’s protagonist could break out of the loop in a super ridiculous way. Just thinking about it cracks you up. You don’t want to forget any part of this hilarious idea. You open another document and type it out.
Three weeks later you’re sitting in a Starbucks. You have another idea for how the protagonist can break out of the loop but with absolutely heartbreaking consequences. It’s painful to consider, but the idea won’t let you rest. You open your laptop and go to the folder already growing crowded with version after version of the protagonist’s escape from the time loop. You take a sip of triple-shot hazelnut latte and begin again.
It's bad that the boat is stuck. It's bad for lots of people and for lots of reasons. I know that. Please don't think that me liking the stuck boat is an ideological stance. This is not an opinion I have about boats, or about canals, or about things generally being stuck. But I can't deny it: I like that the boat is stuck. I like that, so far, we all seem to agree that the boat is stuck. There's no debate over whether or not the big boat is stuck: it is a big boat, and it is stuck, and we are all aware of those facts, even those of us who are currently located in outer space. Furthermore, most of us share the opinion that it's disagreeable, logistically, for the boat to be stuck. The boat being stuck is inconvenient. It's a big disruption! Nobody can say it isn't a big disruption. None of my distant relatives will get into arguments on The Face Website about whether or not the stuck boat is making a nuisance for lots of people. I like that.
“I Like That The Boat Is Stuck” by Sarah Gailey
I highly recommend that you read this short essay about the stuck boat and why we like hearing in the news that it is stuck. It’s funny and entirely accurate.
In the early hours of the morning, it was easy to forget you were in Miami now. Especially with the old case files you had been pouring through — it brought everything back. Colombia had provided you with some of the best days of your life, but it had also been some of the hardest. Which was saying something.
How many mornings had you laid awake, staring up at the still-dark ceiling listening to Javier breathe? Or listening for his quiet exhales? How many days did you wonder if everything would fall apart?
As easy as it was for him to imagine you picking up your life and leaving Colombia without so much as a goodbye, you could do the same. Javier was Javier. A habitual bachelor — a man that didn’t seem made to settle down. Yet, he’d given up all of that freedom to have a life with you.
To have children with you.
Javier was a different man now. Still fundamentally the same curmudgeon you’d fallen in love with — but he was happier. Smiles weren’t just used to charm and disarm, they were genuine. His affection for you was unshaken.
And that was how you really knew you had his heart.
You had been beside him for years, you knew how he operated — you knew his type. But his gaze never wandered if you were beside him. Even when you weren’t, he was more likely to get pissed off that someone had hit on him, than he was to seem amused by it.
But going through your old files had brought it all back. Laying there in bed beside him, listening to him breathe as you ran your hand over your swollen stomach.
This time around was different, even if your thoughts dwelled on the past.
Javier shifted beside you, mumbling your name groggily as he rolled over and snaked his arm around your waist. “Morning.”
“Hi.” You whispered, lifting your hand to comb your fingers through his hair.
He shuffled closer to you, pressing a kiss to your shoulder. “How long have you been up?”
“About an hour,” You answered with a sigh. “She’s been very active this morning.”
“Yeah?” He rubbed his nose against the crook of your neck, before he slid down the bed and ducked beneath the covers.
You bit down on your bottom lip and smiled as you felt him draw up your tank top, warm hands smoothing over your stomach.
“Keeping mommy up?” Javier spoke to the bump, kissing a spot just below your navel. “She’s got a big day today, you should’ve let her sleep.” He cradled his hands on either side of your stomach, before emerging from beneath the covers.
You grinned at him, reaching down to drag your fingers through his disheveled hair. “I still feel silly having a baby shower.” If Connie hadn’t harassed you into having one - you wouldn’t be having it.
“Bet you’ll have fun.” He smirked, settling back down beside you with one hand still resting at your stomach. “And you didn’t get to have one for Josie.”
“I know.” You nodded. And that was why you were doing this — because Javier had missed out on all of those little pivotal moments that came with parenthood.
The baby moved, a hand or a foot pressing against you and you quickly reached for Javier’s hand, sliding it to the place where she was moving.
“What is it, baby?” Javier questioned, rubbing his thumb over your skin before his eyes widened as she moved again. It was a faint flutter, just enough for him to feel too. “Oh.”
You smiled at him, brushing your knuckles over his cheek as you held his gaze. “Your daughter is a wiggleworm, just like her sister.”
Javier chuckled warmly as he stroked his hand over that spot, trying to coax her to move again. “Only a few more months and she’ll be a wiggleworm in our arms.” He mused, “How are you feeling?”
“Tired,” You admitted, chewing on your bottom lip as you rubbed at your eyes. “You slept straight through my three bathroom trips last night. My bladder is her punching bag.”
He grimaced, “You can always wake me up, baby. You don’t have to do it all alone.” Javier planted his hand on the mattress beside you so he could shift himself partially over you and press a kiss to your lips.
“But you’re so grumpy when you haven’t slept.” You reminded him, tugging at his hair as you kissed him again, “I’ll wake you up tonight if she wakes me up.” You promised him.
Javier leaned forward and kissed you again, “You ready to get up?” He questioned, his lips brushing against yours.
“A few more minutes.” You whispered, before you both readjusted into a familiar position. Javier’s body curled around yours, your back resting against his chest and his arm curled around you so he could stroke your belly.
“I love you.” Javier murmured as he pressed a kiss to the back of your neck, his breath warm as it ghosted over your skin.
“I love you too.” You smiled, chewing on your thumb nail as you stared out the window. “We could always ditch the shower and go house hunting instead.”
“Baby.”
“You know I hate when people make a fuss about me.”
“I know.”
“You hate when people make a fuss about you.”
Javier chuckled, tapping his fingers in a rhythm against your stomach. “Connie’s promised it’ll be fun.”
“I swear to God, if Tracy and Jeff show up.”
“Shhh.” He whispered, kissing your shoulder. “The six people you like will be there.”
“You, the Murphys, and Josie?”
Javier snorted.
“I’m deadly serious.”
“The six other people you like.”
You pouted a little, “I never pictured myself having a shower. I was dragged to two with my sister-in-law and they were just…” You shrugged. “Tacky?”
“Yeah?” Javier clicked his tongue against his teeth. “You never talk about her.”
“Yeah.” You scraped your teeth over your bottom lip. “I always felt like a fish out of water with her. I don’t think she meant to make me feel like I was a sympathy case, but it felt that way sometimes.”
You knew it wasn’t her intention, but it happened nevertheless. She was a socialite and you were… a scrappy teen from the armpit of Pennsylvania.
“If it gets to be too much,” Javier started, running his hand along the side of your stomach. “We can go sit outside that house on Iguana.”
You interlaced your fingers with his, “I want that house, Javier. I know it’s not quite what we were looking for, but…”
“But, what?”
“I think it’s home”
Javier kissed your shoulder, “You know, baby… I think you’re right. That backyard.”
“I can picture the girls playing in the backyard.”
“And that bedroom,” Javier gestured to the room around you. “The walk-in closet.”
“The bathtub.”
He chuckled, running the tip of his nose along the curve of your throat before pressing a kiss to the spot behind your ear. “You wanna put a bid on it?”
You bit down on your bottom lip and nodded slowly, “Wanna call the realtor today?”
“I’ll call at ten before we leave.” Javier squeezed your hand.
You turned a little so you could look at him, a grin spreading over your lips as you met his gaze. “I hope we get it.”
“Me too.” He slid his hand out of your hold to cup your cheek, his thumb brushing against your skin.
 ——
 “Should’ve known you’d leave us sooner or later,” Javier pressed his tongue the inside of his cheek, tilting his head as he took another swig of beer. “Could be worse than Andrews.”
Tripp rested his beer bottle on his knee as he leaned back in the lawn chair, “Probably gonna stay in another five.”
“If you stay at Andrews, you’ll be primed to go straight into the civilian side of defense.” Steve remarked, “Word of advice though, man. Peña’s known to uproot and follow you when he gets attached to someone.”
You laughed as you watched Javier flip Steve off. “Definitely not moving anywhere near Washington.”
Lisa shielded her eyes as she turned to look at you, “You ever work up there?”
“I had a couple meetings in the city before I moved to Atlanta.” You shrugged your shoulders. “And back when I was in the academy, we had a couple conferences down there.”
Javier clicked his tongue against his teeth, “I wonder if any of them would’ve been the same conferences I attended.”
Your brows drew together as you tilted your head to look at him. “It would’ve been ‘82 or ‘83.” You pursed your lips as you thought about that period of time. “Maybe ‘84.”
He nodded his head slowly as he worked his jaw, “Might’ve been there.”
“Imagine if you’d met back then,” Lisa stated, taking a sip of her beer, before using it to point between the two of you.
Javier grimaced a little, “Don't think we’d be sitting here right now if we’d met then.” He reached over and gave your stomach a soft stroke, meeting your gaze.
“Definitely not.” You agreed. Even you knew you had been insufferable during that period in your life. Back then, you were constantly trying to climb the ladder to your success. And now look at you — your entire career was consolidated into a stack of files that omitted your efforts.
“So, have you picked out a name?” Lisa questioned.
“Yeah,” Javier nodded. “And it’s just further proof that she’s too damn good for me.” He rose to his feet then, leaning down to kiss the top of your head, “You want anything?”
“I’m good, babe.” You assured him, waving him off. “We are naming her after his mother — Sofía.”
“That’s beautiful.” She smiled at you. “And it goes well with Josie.” Lisa nodded towards Javier as he walked across the Murphy’s yard. “Is Josie a family name as well?”
“His grandmother on his father’s side.” You explained, taking a drink of your water. “I don’t really have any on my side I give a shit about and contrary to popular belief—“ You shot Steve a look. “Javier’s got a soft spot for family.”
“I had noticed.” Lisa laughed. “I’m so sorry that I won’t be here for her birth. The assignment came down pretty quickly.” She frowned. “Please keep in touch. I’d love to hear how things go.”
“You’ll be on a Christmas card list for sure.”
“There’s a Christmas card list?” Steve questioned, arching a brow at you. “Are we on it?”
“Nope.” You shot back. “Usually because we see you.”
He squinted, “Suspicious.”
“I feel like I remember getting you a mug with you and Javier on it.”
Steve groaned dramatically, “Connie’s favorite mug to use.”
Tripp leaned forward, “Do tell.”
“There’s a store in the mall that can take pictures and put them on mugs,” You explained. “And last summer two idiots got shitfaced while we were having s’mores back here and Connie and I got some ridiculous pictures of them.”
“They’re bad.” Steve said as he took a sobering drink of beer.
“It says WORLD’S DADDEST DADS.” You snorted, shaking your head. “It was supposed to say Daddys but Connie decided to be a killjoy.”
“Thank fuck.” Steve huffed, before standing up. “Speaking of Connie, I’m gonna go check on how she’s handling the great naptime.”
“Any news on the house hunt?” Lisa questioned.
“We just put in an offer in this morning.” You grinned with a little too much teeth. “I’m pretty sure Javier just went to call the realtor again. There was some back and forth about another potential buyer.”
“You’re brave moving during your pregnancy.” Tripp remarked. “Damn near killed Lisa when we had to move cross country when she was pregnant.”
“Slight exaggeration.” Lisa swatted him in the leg. “But stressful.”
“I’m just ready to have something like this.” You gestured around the backyard. “I love our condo, but I’m ready to have a home. You know?”
Lisa nodded, “I definitely understand that feeling. I’m really hoping we stick around Andrews. I wouldn’t mind that being home.”
At the end of the day, wasn’t that all that really mattered? Having a home. Whether it was a place with four walls or a someone that you called home.
13 - Wartime
Summary: The camp prepares to make a trip to the ocean, but the grounder army puts a stop in their plans, forcing them back to camp to fight a war.
Word Count: 2.94k
Based Off: 01x13, “We Are Grounders, Part Two”
Tumblr media
Everyone outside of the dropship prepared to leave while Clarke cauterized Raven’s wound and Finn held her hand.
“That should stop the external bleeding.” She put the knife in a basin and Finn started talking.
“I don’t understand, how did Murphy get a gun?” He asked.
“Long story,” Bellamy said.
“We got lucky,” Raven moaned. “If Murphy hit the fuel tank instead of me, we’d all be dead.”
“Wait, there’s rocket fuel down there?” Clarke asked the brunette. “Enough to build a bomb?”
“Enough to build 100 bombs.” Raven replied. “If we had any gunpowder left.”
“Let’s get back to the reapers.” Bellamy lifted Lincoln’s book to show a sketch of one. “Maybe they’ll help us.”
“The enemy of my enemy is my friend, right?” You asked.
“Not this enemy.” Clarke said. “We saw them. Trust me, it’s not an option.”
“There’s no time for this.” Finn chimed in. “Can she walk or not?”
“No.” Clarke responded. “We have to carry her.”
“The hell you will.” Raven tried to sit up. “I’m good to go.” Her attempts at sitting up were feeble, and she put herself in more pain trying to do so.
“Hey,” Clarke got her attention. “Listen to me. That bullet is still inside you. If, by some miracle, there’s no internal bleeding, it might hold until we get somewhere safe. But you are not walking there. Is that clear?”
Raven nodded and laid back down on the table while Finn went to get the stretcher to put her on.
“Can’t run away fast enough, huh? That’s brave, real brave.” Bellamy commented in a snide tone.
Finn turned at his comment and walked back over to the man. “Dying in a fight you can’t win isn’t brave, Bellamy. It’s stupid.”
“Spoken like every coward who’s ever run from a fight.” Bellamy walked closer to Finn as he spoke, getting dangerously close. The tension in the room was high due to their verbal fight, and you could feel that this was going to escalate quickly.
“Alright, that’s enough.” You spoke up from beside Raven. “You two need to stop. We have to go.”
“If they follow, it’s a 120 mile walk to the ocean.” Bellamy informed you.
“Like I said,” You moved closer to Bellamy. “It’s a risk I’m willing to take to make sure my people don’t die.”
“Look, we’re wasting time.” Finn interrupted. “If he wants to stay, he can stay.”
“No, he can’t,” Clarke replied, but Finn was already out of the dropship. She turned and walked up to Bellamy to try and get him to come along.
“We can’t do this without you, Bellamy.” She told him.
“What do you want me to say, Clarke?” He replied angrily and with a steeled expression, keeping his gaze looking over her shoulder.
“I want you to say that you’re with us.” She said.
“Those kids out there,” You stepped in to help persuade him. “They listen to you, Bellamy.”
“They’re lining up to go. They clearly listen to you more.” He countered.
“We gave them an easy choice.” Clarke said. “But 5 minutes ago they were willing to fight and die for you. You inspire them.”
He looked up at the doors, and then to you without saying a word. “I’m afraid we’re gonna need that again before this day is through.”
She turned and walked out of the ship, while you took her spot in front of Bellamy and out a reassuring hand on his arm. “Come with us, Bellamy. You’re one of us, and like it or not, we need you.”
Not long after, everyone was ready to leave camp. The gunners were leading the walk to protect against any attacks, while the others stayed behind them and carried what they could. You and Clarke waited until everyone else was out of the camp to make your way to Bellamy, who was still looking at the ship.
“You did good here, Bellamy.” Clarke assured.
“18 dead.” He said.
“And 82 alive.” You countered. “You did good.”
He nodded and tossed a bucket of water onto the fire, throwing it to the ground and walking away with you and Clarke.
Tumblr media
You’d walked a fair bit, keeping your hand on your sword’s hilt in case there was someone you needed to fight. It wasn’t very long until the group stopped moving, and from where you, Bellamy and Clarke were, you couldn’t see what was going on. It was then that you heard a loud thump and Jasper scream out that the grounders attacked did everyone rush to get back to camp.
You and Bellamy directed everyone inside the walls of camp and everyone moved to their own stations or foxholes, prepping hastily for the battle. You helped to close the door and unsheathed your sword while Bellamy was at the watchtower.
“Lincoln said the scouts would be the first to arrive.” Clarke said, directing her sentence to Finn.
“If it’s just scouts then we can fight our way out.” Octavia chimed in. “That’s what Lincoln would do.”
“We’re done doing what that grounder would do.” Bellamy jumped down from his post. “We tried it and now Drew’s dead. Do you wanna be next?”
“That grounder saved our lives.” Finn defended. “I agree with Octavia. For all we know there’s one scout out there.”
“Yeah, a scout with insanely good aim.” Jasper said.
“Clarke, Y/n, we can still do this.” Octavia pleaded.
“Looking at you guys, what’s it gonna be?” Bellamy asked you. “Run and get picked off out in the open, or stand and fight back?”
You took a mental step back and assessed the situation. If you agreed with Octavia and fought your way to the ocean, you might not make it out alive. The grounders would surround you and you’d be in their territory, vulnerable to a major loss. If you stayed in camp and tried to do what you could to fight, you’d have a better chance of surviving and you’d likely lose less people to the grounders.
You looked at Clarke and voiced your opinion as she looked out into the woods before jumping back down. “I say we’re staying. If we use everything we’ve got and fight like hell, we could actually make it out alive.”
“Clarke,” Finn grabbed the blonde’s arm. “If we’re still here when Tristan gets here-”
“Lincoln said ‘scouts’. More than one. He told us to get home before the scouts arrived. Finn, they’re already here.” She turned to Bellamy. “Looks like you’ve got your fight.”
“Okay then.” He spoke loudly to address the other campers. “This is what we’ve been preparing for. Kill them before they kill us.”
“Gunners, to your posts!” You shouted beside him. “Use the tunnels to get in and out. From now on, the gate stays closed.”
You watched everyone move into position as Octavia did, too, but Bellamy caught her arm, telling her she wasn’t a gunner and she defended herself before moving to the exit to help with the battle.
“So, how the hell do we do this?” Clarke asked. You all moved into the dropship to explain the plan and information you had to her, Finn, and Raven.
“We’ve got 25 rifles with 20 rounds each, give or take.” Bellamy said. “Roughly 500 rounds of ammo.”
“While you two were gone, we made some improvements.” You took over. “Thanks to Raven, the gully is mined.”
“Partially mined.” Raven corrected painfully. “Thanks to Murphy.”
“Still, it’s the main route in. If the grounders use it, we’ll know.” Bellamy told the room.
“She also made grenades.” You picked one up to show Clarke and Finn.
“There’s not many,” Clarke commented.
“Again. Thank you, Murphy.” Raven said sarcastically.
“We’ll make them count. If the grounders make it through the front gate, guns and grenades should force them back.” Bellamy pointed to the scale model of the front gate on the table.
“And then?” Clarke asked worriedly.
“Then, we close the door and pray.” Raven said.
“And pray what? That the ship keeps them out?” She asked. “Because it won’t.”
“Then let’s not let them get past the front gate.” You said, looking at the scale model and gripping your jacket sleeve in hopes to relieve some stress.
“All foxholes, listen up.” Bellamy spoke into the radio. “Keep your eyes and ears open. Inflict casualties, as many as possible. You can hold them off long enough to make them turn back. That’s the plan.”
“That’s always your plan.” Finn said. “Just like the bomb at the bridge.”
“Damn right. You got a better idea?”
“I think I do.” You spoke up. “Raven, you said there’s fuel in those rockets, right? Enough to build 100 bombs.”
“I also said we’ve got no gunpowder left.” She told you.
“I don’t want to build a bomb.” You said. “I want to blast off.”
“Draw them in close, fire the rockets. A ring of fire.” Clarke explained simply, smirking along with Raven.
“Barbequed grounders. I like it.” Bellamy agreed.
“Will it work?” Finn asked Raven.
“The wiring is a mess down there, but yeah.” She turned to you and Bellamy. “If you give me enough time, I’ll cook ‘em real good.”
You smirked at her and nodded, liking that you had an even better plan than what was formed before. Clarke and Finn went underneath the floor of the dropship to look for the ignition system while Raven sat near the floor entrance and worked on repairing the electrical board, while you and Bellamy headed out to prep for the impending and inevitable war.
It was nightfall when you heard the drums. You were by the fire, sharpening your own and other people’s blades in case it came time to use them. You looked to Bellamy, who seemed to have the same idea as you, and ran to the main foxhole.
“Where’s Octavia?” He asked Miller.
“No idea. She left 5 minutes ago, didn’t say where to.” He responded. “She thinks she’s a damn samurai.”
“Do you see anything?” You asked, sword drawn.
“No.” Monroe replied frustratedly. “What the hell are they waiting for?”
“The longer they wait, the better. This is about buying time for Raven.” He told her.
“I see them! They’re moving!” Sterling’s voice cut through the air, slightly staticy. “I count 2, 3- no, wait, there’s more. I don’t know man, there’s too damn many of them!”
A gunshot rang through the air and Bellamy asked Miller who was on the radio. “Sterling, I think. South foxhole.”
More gunshots rang out as Bellamy pulled out his radio. “South foxhole, report now.”
“Yeah, yeah, We’re okay. They didn’t attack. It’s like shooting at ghosts.”
You kept your eyes on the terrain ahead of you, seeing grounders move across your field of vision. “There!”
“I see them!” Monroe shouted, shooting at the grounders. Miller joined her and Bellamy shouted at them to stop.
“Reload, now.” He commanded, as they were both out of bullets.
“Those were our last clips.” Miller told him.
“We should- we should fall back.” Monroe suggested, panicked.
“No.” Bellamy said. “If this position falls, they’ll walk right through the front door.”
You unsteadily readied your sword as Bellamy positioned himself to look through the scope of his gun. You kept your stance and listened to the radio, Jasper confirming that the land mines worked.
“Jasper, we need you in the dropship, now.” Clarke’s voice came through.
“Negative.” Bellamy responded. “We can’t give up the west woods.”
“The west woods are mined, Bellamy. The grounders just figured that out.” Clarke said. “Jasper, get in here.”
“All gunners, listen up.” Jasper spoke. “The grounders are not attacking. They’re making us waste bullets. Don’t shoot when they’re running laterally.”
“Jasper’s right,” Bellamy confirmed. “Don’t fire until you’re sure it’s an attack. Repeat, do not fire until you are sure.”
Jasper then told Clarke that he was coming to help out, and you looked around worriedly. Something was feeling off to you. You didn’t know what it was, but your gut instincts were telling you to flee, to leave now and save yourself. But you knew to go against them, that you had to stay and fight. This was your battle, too.
Then it came. The gunfire, the battlecry. Grounders were headed straight towards you. You swung your sword as they ran for you, Monroe falling back with Miller. You slashed one grounder's throat and spun as you did so, plunging your sword into another grounder’s chest.
One of them attacked Bellamy and pushed him to the ground, Miller attempting to go after him, but failing when another grounder shoved his spear into Miller’s shoulder. Bellamy managed to fight the grounder, but failed when he was pushed to the ground again, the grounder’s hands tightening themselves around Bellamy’s neck.
You were busy fighting one of the other grounders and couldn’t help, but once you had killed him, you saw Octavia shove her sword through the back of the grounder’s head and straight through his eye, saving her brother.
“Admit it, you want one.” She said, panting. Before she could help her brother up off the ground, an arrow fired from behind her and struck her in the leg, causing her to falter and fall, Bellamy catching her.
“Miller! Fall back! Now!” He stood and grabbed Octavia by the arms to support her. “Can you walk?”
She stumbled and he put her arm over his shoulder. “O, hey. Hold on to me. Let me get you behind that wall.” He carried her bridal style and you followed behind, serving as cover for the siblings in case any grounders tried to attack them while they were vulnerable.
When you neared the gate, you heard screaming and metal clashing, causing Bellamy and you to skid to a halt.
“What is that?” Octavia asked.
“I don’t know, but they’re distracted.” Her brother responded, placing her against a tree. “Let’s move.”
“We’ll never make it.” Octavia panted. “Leave me. I’ll find another way.”
“No way in hell are we leaving you here.” You said.
“Octavia!” Lincoln said from behind you as he broke through the trees. A small smile came to your lips as they hugged.
“You did this?” Bellamy asked, nodding his head towards the reapers and grounders fighting one another.
“With Finn.” He told Bellamy. He looked down at the broken arrow in Octavia’s leg. “It’s deep.”
A grunt came from nearby and Lincoln spoke quickly. “I can help you, but you have to come with me now.”
“Go.” Bellamy said. “Let him help you.”
“No way,” Said Octavia. “I have to see this through.”
“You can’t walk and we can’t get you to the dropship.” You intervened.
“They’re right. This fight is over for you.” Lincoln told Octavia.
“O. O, listen to me.” Bellamy said. “I told you my life ended the day you were born. The truth is, it didn’t start until then. So go with him. I need you to live. Besides, we’ve got this.”
You put a reassuring hand on her shoulder and smiled at her, letting go so she could hug Bellamy and say their own goodbyes before being carried away by Lincoln so she could remain safe.
You both paused for a minute until the shouting began again, revealing that the grounders were advancing on the wall. You and Bellamy picked up the pace and ran to the entrance. Clarke and Finn spotted the both of you, screaming for you to run, which you did. Bellamy picked up a gun and attempted to shoot at Tristan, but it was out of ammo.
You didn't make it very far from the entrance when four grounders closed in on you. You managed to take down the first one with relative ease, slicing his throat. One of the others attempted to bash your head in but you sliced his arm, causing him to fall with pain. You kicked him over forcefully and plunged your sword into his heart.
You spun around to face another grounder, thrusting yourself and your sword forward, stabbing him in the stomach. You watched the dropship door close, and you feared you were running out of time. You froze in your spot, but not for very long when the last grounder that had surrounded you shoved his dagger all the way into your right side, more towards your back.
The grounder left you once you collapsed to your knees, attempting to tear the dropship down to nothing with the rest of the army. You knew the blast was coming soon, so you dragged yourself to the exit and attempted pulling yourself to your feet. You groaned in pain, coughing at the sting of the blade. ‘I’ve been here for what, a month? And I’ve already been stabbed twice.’
You stumbled to the path that led out to the main gate as the rumbling of fire and the heat touched your skin. You slowly walked as the energy further drained from your body, feeling blood drip down your skin. The knife moved and tore your flesh every time you made a movement, but you knew it was important that you got to the main gate. You needed to survive. You needed to live.
You felt yourself getting lighter with every step, pushing through bushes and shrubbery. A sigh escaped your dry and pale lips as you saw the treeline, the wall. You reached out to stabilize yourself on it, but you fell to your knees instead, collapsing as darkness surrounded you. Your torso and head hit the ground with a thud, but no pain was felt when you hit the dirt. You just closed your eyes, feeling at peace.
You head over to the Dropship walking through the cluster of kids packing up as you hear screams of pain. As you make your way into the Dropship you find Clarke pressing a red hot knife against Raven’s wounded body.
“That’ll stop the external bleeding,” Clarke states setting the knife down.
“I don’t understand. How did Murphy get a gun?” Finn asks.
“Long story,” You respond as you limp in.
“You should be resting,” Bellamy states to you.
“You don’t tell me what to do,” You respond making your way to Raven.
“We got lucky. If Murphy hit the fuel tank instead of me, we’d all be dead,” Raven says raspily.
“Wait, there’s rocket fuel down there? Enough to build a bomb?” Clarke questions Raven.
“Enough to build 100 bombs...If we had any gunpowder left,” Raven states.
“Let’s get back to the reapers. Maybe they’ll help us. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, right?” Bellamy asks clearly referring to something you didn’t know about.
“Not this enemy. We saw them. Trust me. It’s not an option,” Clarke states.
“Hold up. Can someone catch me up?” You ask looking at the three.
“Lincoln took Finn and me into a cave where these grounders live, except they’re not like the ones we’ve met. They’re the kill on sight kind of people.” Clarke explains.
“There’s no time for this.” Finn states. “Can she walk or not?” He makes his voice quieter, thinking that Raven couldn’t hear.
“No. We have to carry her.” Clarke responds.
“The hell you will. I’m good to go,” Raven says struggling to sit up.
“Hey, listen to me. That bullet is still inside you. If by some miracle, there’s no internal bleeding, it might hold until we get somewhere safe. But you are not walking there. Is that clear?” Clarke questions Raven as she nods in agreement.
“Hey, I’d be much happier if you didn’t die on me,” You say to Raven.
“I’ll get the stretcher,” Finn says walking off.
“Hey, get one for Y/N too,” Clarke says and Finn nods in response.
“I’m fine. I can walk if. I’m going.” You respond sternly.
“Your wound was just reopened. Not to mention gaining another one. You’re too weak to walk,” Clarke responds back.
“Carrying me will just make us slower. I’ll walk.” You respond not backing down. Clarke does nothing but sigh as we really had no time to fight.
“Can’t run away fast, huh? Real brave.” Bellamy states.
“Dying in a fight you can’t win isn’t brave, Bellamy. It’s stupid.” Finn makes his way back to us.
“Spoken like every coward who’s ever run from a fight,” Bellamy says getting closer to Finn.
“All right that’s enough,” You butt in.
“It’s time to go,” Clarke chimes in.
“If they follow? It’s a 120-mile walk to the ocean,” Bellamy starts.
“Look, we’re wasting time. If they want to stay, they can stay,” Finn interrupts walking off.
“No, they can’t,” Clarke says as Finn storms out of the Dropship. “We can’t do this without you guys, Bellamy and Y/N,” Clarke turns back to us.
“What do you want me to say, Clarke?” Bellamy asks.
“I want you to say that you’re with us. Both of you. Those kids out there, they listen to you guys.” Clarke says shifting her gaze between the two of you.
“They’re lining up to go. They listen to you more,” You add in.
“I gave them an easy choice,. But five minutes ago, they were willing to fight and die for you. You guys inspire them. I’m afraid we’re gonna need that again before this day is through.” Clarke tells you two before walking off.
“So what are we gonna do?” You ask turning to Bellamy.
“We’re leaving. Get packing.” Bellamy states before walking out.
You leave the Dropship and start to quickly pack your items out before making your way back to the Dropship. You help the others get Raven onto a stretcher and meet Bellamy outside as the other kids start to leave the camp.
“You guys did good here,” Clarke says as you two make your way to her.
“18 dead,” You state.
“82 alive, you guys did good, Clarke responds back. Bellamy picks up the bucket beside him and toses the water inside atop the fire behind him.
We continue through the forest, making our way to the ocean. After walking a few miles, you notice Octavia, who was at the front, put her hand up, stopping us all. The next thing you know you see a kid up ahead fall down.
“Grounders!” You hear Jasper yell and everyone starts to run back from where we came.  You start to run back with the others. You only make it a few feet before your leg gives out and you trip over your own feet, sending you to the ground.
“Y/N!” Bellamy yells stopping in his tracks. “Here, get on my back,” Bellamy leans down as you grab his shoulders. He lifts you up and starts to run back to the camp. As you make it back to the camp Bellamy sets you down and helps get the others into camp.
“Move, move, move!” Bellamy yells to the kids as they push and shove. As soon as everyone was in you help push the gate shut no matter how much your leg hurt. You just wanted to get everyone safely inside, or as safe as we could be.
You head up to where Bellamy and Clarke were standing to look for the grounders, “Where are they? Why aren’t they attacking?” Bellamy asks ready to shoot.
“Because we’re doing exactly what they want us to do,” You state.
“What are you talking about?” Bellamy asks.
“Lincoln said the scouts would be the first to arrive,” Clarke states.
“If it’s just the scouts, we can fight our way out. That’s what Lincoln would do,” Octavia states walking up to us.
“We’re done doing what that grounder would do. We tried it and now Drew is dead. You want to be next?” Bellamy questions jumping down from the ledge.
“That grounder saved our lives. I agree with Octavia. For all we know, there’s one scout out there.” Finn responds.
“One scout with insanely good aim,” Jasper adds.
“Clarke, we can still do this,” Octavia states.
“Looking to you, Princess. What’s it gonna be? Run and get picked off out in the open, or stand and fight back?” Bellamy asks. Clarke turns to look out past the walls before hopping down from the ledge as you do the same.
“Clarke. If we’re still here when Tristan gets here--” Finn stops Clarke.
“Lincoln said ‘scouts’ more than one. He said ‘get home before the scouts arrive’. Finn, they’re already here.” Clarke interrupts Finn. “ Looks like you got your fight,” Clarke turns to Bellamy.
“Ok, then. This is what we’ve been preparing for. Kill them before they kill us. Gunners, to your posts. Use the tunnels to get in and out. From now on. The gate stays closed.” Bellamy states as kids start to prepare to fight.
You head off with Octavia to prepare to fight, “Whoa, whoa, whoa. You guy’s aren’t gunners,” Bellamy grapes both yours and Octavia’s arms.
“No. We’re not,” You respond.
“Like you said....I’m a grounder,” Octavia responds holding her machete before walking off. You start to follow her before Bellamy stops you again.
“What?” You ask wanting to get a move on.
“You’re not going anywhere. Not with that leg,” Bellamy’s eyes shift down to your leg then back to your eyes.
“I’m fighting, Bell. I’m not letting anything happen to our people,” You respond annoyed.
“Look. Y/N. You tripped on the way back to camp. You can barely stand.” Bellamy points to you favoring your left leg. “I’m not letting you get hurt more than you already are. You can’t fight. We have this handled, Now get in the Dropship with Raven.” Bellamy responds back.
“You don’t control me!” You yell getting angry. “I can’t just sit back and hope all goes well. I want to be out here fighting, protecting what we made, Bell!” You state.
“Hey, I’m sorry, Y/N. But Bellamy’s right. We can’t have you out here risking your life, being that hurt. We need you alive.” Clarke butts in walking up to you two.
“Ugh!” You head into the Dropship being sick of hearing people telling you what to do. You throw your stuff to the side before starting to head up the ladder.
“Got benched too?” You hear Raven off to the side.
“Yeah. Clarke and Bellamy are heart set on keeping me in here,” You say making your way to her. “I’m sick of people telling me what to do,” You sit next to her.
“With all due respect, Y/N. But I agree with them. You need your strength and we need you. I would love to fight too but--” Raven gestures to her gun wounds.
“I get that they’re just looking out for me. But I can’t just sit back here and wait,” You say. Before Raven could respond, you notice Bellamy, and Clarke makes their way in.
“We’ve got 25 rifles with 20 rounds each, give or take. Roughly 500 rounds of ammo. While you two were gone. We made some improvements. Thanks to Raven, the gully is mined.” Bellamy explains as you all gather around the mini-map of the camp.
“Partially mined. Thanks to Murphy,” Raven explains straining.
“Still, it’s the main route in. If the grounders use it, we’ll know. She also built grenades,” Bellamy explains picking up a slim tube.
“It’s not many,” You point out.
“Again, thank you, Murphy,” Raven says annoyed.
“We’ll make them count.” Bellamy sets the grenade back down. “If the grounders make it through the front gate, guns and grenades should force them back,” Bellamy explains.
“And then?” Clarke asks.
“Then we close the door and pray.” Raven breaks the silence.
“And pray what?” You ask.
“That the ship keeps them out? Because it won’t.” Clarke adds.
“Then let’s not let them get through the gate,” Bellamy responds. “All foxholes, listen up. Keep your eyes and ears open. Inflict casualties, as many as possible. You can hold them off long enough to make them turn back. That’s the plan.” Bellamy speaks into the radio.
“That’s always your plan, just like at the bridge.” Finn states.
“Damn right. You got a better idea?” Bellamy asked back.
“It can’t be that simple,” Clarke whispers under her breath and turns to Raven. “You said there’s fuel in those rockets right? Enough to build 100 bombs.” Clarke asks her.
“I also said we’ve got no gun powder left.” Raven states.
“I don’t want to build a bomb. I want to blast off.” Clarke says.
“Draw them in close. Fire the rockets. A ring of fire.” Raven says figuring out what Clarke was getting at.
“Barbecued grounders. I like it.” Bellamy says.
“I don’t,” You butt in.
“We don’t have much of a choice, Y/N,” Bellamy says back.
“Will it work?” Finn turns to Raven.
“The wirings a mess down there, but yeah. You give me enough time, I’ll cook them real good.” Raven responds. You say nothing as you can clearly tell no one cares for your opinion. Clarke and Finn head down into the underside of the ship as you help Raven with her set up.
“Finn, do you see it over there?” You hear Clarke below you guys.
“No,” Finn responds as you help her wire a few things.
“Raven, We can’t even find the ignition system. Raven?” Clarke says waiting for an answer. You watch as she sits there in thought.
“I can’t feel my legs,” Raven finally speaks.
“Ok, hold on. We’re coming,” Clarke says as you rush over.
“Hey, you’re gonna be ok. We’re gonna figure this out and then get you help. Ok, We got this,” You assure her as she nods.
“Ok, let me see,” Clarke says making her way out of the floor. Raven starts to lean forward as she groans in pain. Clarke lifts her shirt up to reveal bruising, before looking over at Finn.
“That bad, huh?” Raven asks sarcastically. Clarke stays silent as she helps Raven back up.
“Oh, Raven. The bullet’s in your spine. You’re bleeding internally,” Clarke explains.
“We better do this fast then, huh? Get back down there.” Raven responds, clearly not wanting to talk about it.
“What if we could slow the bleeding? Would that help?” Finn stops Clarke from moving.
“Well, of course it would help. Can you tell me how to do that?” Clarke asks.
“That stuff the grounders had-- coagulant. You said that Lincoln had some, too,” Finn explains.
“Yeah, it’s in the box with the antidote, but I--” Clarke starts.
“I’m betting that there’s more of it in his cave. If I can get there--” Finn interrupts.
“Wait a second. No,” Raven responds.
“I can make it,” Finn says back.
“Clarke, Y/N, tell him he’s being an idiot,” Raven responds.
“Raven,” Finn says.
“What? I’m not gonna let you die to save me,” Raven tells Finn.
“Fine. If you won’t let me save you, How about we save everybody else? You’re the only one who can fire those rockets. If you die, we all die.” Finn suggests. Raven shakes her head at him. “I’ll be right back,” Finn says looking at us and heads off.
“Finn, wait,” Clarke says getting up. You don’t hear their conversation as they are talking too quietly.
Seeing as there has been no recent activity you head outside to check up on everyone, “Hey, hows everyone out there?” You ask Bellamy making your way over to him.
“Freaked but alive.” He responds.
“You guys got enough stuff out here?” You ask.
“Yeah, I think so,” Bellamy says as you start to hear drums.
“They’re here,” Some kid says.
“Get back in the Dropship, Y/N,” Bellamy demands.
“But Bell--” You start.
“Get back in the damn ship, Y/N,” Bellamy demands once more before running off. Even though you wanted to fight you knew Bellamy was right. That and you still needed to help Raven and Clarke.
You rush back into the ship to help finish making Raven’s “Ring of Fire”. You find only Raven sitting by the hole, “Hey, where’s Clarke?” You asked her.
“Below us,” Raven explains.
“Ok, what can I do to help?” You ask.
“Could you help me wire this?” She asks and you nod back. She explains what she’s doing and walks you through the wiring as you hear the kids outside speaking over the radio.
“Do you see it or don’t you?” Raven asks Clarke looking down the hole.
“No. It’s a mess down here,” Clarke responds.
“It’ll be orange. Look harder!” Raven says back.
“I’ll go help her look,” You says starting to move towards the hole.
“No, your leg is too injured,” Raven says grabbing your arm. “And you’re actually a big help up here,”
“Fine,” You sigh.
“You have to find the wire that connects the manual override to the electromagnet. It’s not rocket science.” Raven tells Clarke.
“It is rocket science, actually,” Clarke responds.
“Guess we finally found something you’re not good at. I used to be picked first for everything. Earth skills, Zero-g mech course. First… every time. So, how the hell did I end up here?” Raven says as you clearly notice Raven getting sad.
“Raven? I’d pick you first.” You say looking up at her.
“I’d pick you first too,” Clare says in quick succession after you.
“Of course you guys would. I’m awesome,” Raven says shaking off the sadness.
“Hey, I found it. Orange wire.” Clarke says.
“About time! Now follow that wire to the override panel,” Raven explains.
“Raven? It’s fried. Totally useless. Tell me this isn’t as bad and I think.” Clarke says as you notice Raven’s upset face.
“You know how to splice a wire?” Raven asks.
“No,” Clarke responds.
“Then it’s worse,” Raven says. She tries to move before screaming in pain.
“Raven. Stop, we’ll figure this out.” You say. “Wait. I can splice, someone taught me a few years ago.” You reveal as you hop down below. You start to splice the wire.
“Hey, Raven, tell us again how this is gonna work,” Clarke asks.
“Told you 5 times. Current flows to the electromagnet. That opens the poppet valve. Rockets fire.” Raven explains.
“Ok. Got the good wire ready to graft on. What’s next?” You ask. “Raven?” You ask after getting no response. “Raven!” You yell once more before Clarke starts to head back up. You follow after her and find her laying on her side, unconscious.
“Is she--” You start.
“Not yet, but soon.” Clarke quickly responds.
“They broke through. There’s hundreds of them! They’re heading for the gate! Game over, man!” You hear over the radio.
“Finish it,” Clarke says getting ready to help Raven.
“Current to magnet to valve to fire,” You repeat heading back under the floor. As you work on the wiring you hear kids starting to rush into the Dropship, signaling that Clarke is preparing to get people inside.
“Clarke, they’re taking down the gate,” You hear someone say as you finish up the wiring.
“Good. Because I did it...I think,” You say popping your head from under the floor.
“I’m closing that door,” Miller says.
“Wait! We’ve still got people out there. Bellamy’s not back yet.” Clarke says making her way out of the ship. You finish hooking up the destination switch as Jasper helps you.  You look up to see Clarke come in and lift the lever to shut the door.
“No! We have to wait for Bellamy and Octavia!” You yell trying to make your way to her as quickly as possible.
“We don’t have time. I’m sorry, Y/N. We have to shut the door.” Clarke says continuing to lift the lever and holding you from leaving the ship. As you continue to fight Clarke, you see Anya come into the ship. You prepare yourself to fight, holding the knife you keep in your pocket up. As you all continue to stand off Anya, you hear banging of the grounders outside.
“Jasper, now.” Clarke turns to him. He quickly flicks the switch up, but nothing happens as you continue to hear banging from outside the ship.
“Anya, you can’t win,” Clarke says as you rush over to help Jasper. Anya rushes Clarke just as Miller hits her in the back of her head with a gun. The other kids start to punch and kick her.
“Stop! She’s already down.” Clarke yells over the kids.
“Raven says current flows to the magnet.” You say.
“We just need a current,” Jasper says unhooking the switch device as you take the wires. You ignore the fighting around you as Jasper grabs a lamp behind you guys and starts to unscrew it. He takes the wires from your hands and puts them on the battery of the lamp. Soon enough you feel the whole ship shake.
After a few hours, you guess to make sure no one else comes. You quickly go to open the door. When you walk out you see the burnt ground and remains of the grounders that were there. As you and everyone else head out of the ship you quickly look around hoping that Bellamy and Octavia had found a place away from the chaos. You walk over to Clarke as you see her stare at two bodies, hoping it wasn’t the two people closest to you.
Before you could say something you see something fly towards you releasing a red smoke. More and more fly over your gates as the area begins to look red. You start coughing and fall to the ground. The last thing you see is green lasers and people with gas masks and guns as you pass out.
A/N: The season one finale! God, this series has evolved in more ways than I imagined. I hope you all enjoyed this finale and can’t wait for season 2! Thank you for reading!
Krenko’s Guide to Pokemon: Psyduck Line
Tumblr media
What a majestic creature. DESIGN:  I absolutely love this stupid thing that is simultaneously very clearly a duck and very clearly not a duck. It doesn’t have wings, and it’s got hair or something, and it’s bipedal, but it has a duck bill and webbed feet. Is it a Platypus? Maybe, but it doesn’t have any of the classic Platypus abilities. It’s just Psyduck. It’s cute, it’s goofy looking, and it’s iconic. Fun fact: We almost had a Pokemon Let’s Go Psyduck, but the devs decided they didn’t want the second pokemon to be yellow. Pikachu, of course, was a lock from day one.  The devs basically just went out to figure out which Gen 1 pokemon were the most popular that could be the second Pokemon, and Psyduck was on the short list. For as goofy and silly as Psyduck is, Golduck is pure badass. It’s sleek, it’s spikey, it’s dangerous, it’s only vaguely duck-esque but it’s clearly some sort of monster.  Pokedex entries suggest it’s partially based on the Kappa, and while it’s very clearly not a Kappa, it’s got enough Kappa-esque elements. And Kappa are awesome and badass.
Golduck is super cool, but more importantly it’s incredibly unique. I’ve never seen Golduck in anything other than Pokemon, which is something I really appreciate in designs. In a game where you have creatures that are often just ‘a butterfly’ or ‘a cat’ or ‘a phoenix,’ having something that’s this unique and undefinable is really a boon.
Tumblr media
EVOLUTIONS:  Though in the beta there was a form between Psyduck and Golduck, this is just a two-stage evolution that evolves at level 33. This is fine, but it leaves room for growth that I’m really surprised hasn’t been explored yet. Golduck could easily get a third stage or a Mega, or if they just wanted something marketable they could have given us a baby form.  Regional variants would be a good option, too. A golduck that’s actually water/psychic or just Psychic, but still knows Water and Psychic moves, could be really interesting, especially if they tweaked its stats a bit. TYPING:  Water is the most abundant type in the game, and pure water is the second most common type after pure normal.  Now, water’s a great type to be, with four resistances and only two weaknesses, but there’s a lot of competition among Water Pokemon. It’s a good type to be, but Golduck’s not special for being it. STATS:  Golduck is very average. I don’t just mean the fact that its stats total to 500, which is basically ‘average’ for a fully evolved Pokemon, but also the fact that five of its stats are within a few points of 80, and the outlier, Special Attack, is still only 95.  Now, there’s nothing wrong with being average, certainly, but the problem is that for any given strategy you’d want to do with Golduck, there’s another pokemon, probably even another pure water pokemon, that can do it better. On the other hand, this means Golduck can take hits fine and dish them out, and there’s no major weakness to exploit.  You can basically throw Golduck out in any situation and assume he’ll be able to fight fair.
Tumblr media
ABILITIES: Golduck has three abilities, two of which are good. The useless one, Damp, prevents your opponent from kabooming itself with Self-Destruct, Explosion, Mind Blown, Misty Explosion, or Aftermath.  Now, I’m not going to tell you that nobody’s ever going to use one of these abilities (except for Mind Blown, which is a signature move of one of Gen 7′s digimon who has better moves of the type), but I am going to tell you it’s not worth using your ability slot on. Golduck’s hidden ability is the relatively common Swift Swim, which is actually super good. Doubling speed in the rain (including IVs, Evs, etc) means Golduck suddenly goes from ‘average stats’ to ‘top tier speed and good special attack, and also it’s raining so Hydro Pump has +50% damage.’  Obviously this takes setup, and an item like Life Orb for even more damage, but it’s an entirely solid Golduck build. Golduck’s remaining ability is Cloud Nine, which is super useful, and much fewer Pokemon have it. Cloud Nine  negates the effects of Weather, which can significantly mess with an opponent’s strategy, especially in a battle where Dynamaxing is allowed. If your plan is not to use Rain Dance, then Cloud Nine is a great way to mitigate opponent strategies. And it also means Golduck can’t be hit with a SunnyBeam combo, doesn’t take damage from Sandstorm or Hail, and doesn’t have Hydro Pump’s damage reduced in sunlight, which is just a useful bonus.
Tumblr media
MOVES: Golduck’s a Water type Special Attacker, and the move of choice is going to be Hydro Pump or Surf.  Hydro Pump’s bigger, Surf is more Accurate, take your pick.
For other special attacks, Golduck can learn Ice Beam, Psychic or Psyshock, and Focus Blast. As Grass, Dragon, and Water resist Water, taking Ice Beam for Grass and Dragon is the obvious decision, while the other two are dependent on move slots.
For utility, a Swift Swim Golduck likely wants Rain Dance so he can set it up himself when needed. If you want to take the risk to go for a full sweeper, Calm Mind and Substitute will let Golduck set up so that he can then use Ice Beam and Hydro Pump (or Surf) to tear through an enemy team.  Armor recently introduced a new move to Golduck’s arsenal- Flip Turn.  Golduck’s base 82 Attack means it’s bonus damage will be fine even without investment, and having a way to get in a bit of free damage while running from grass and electric moves is certainly reasonable.  My ideal Golduck would probably be Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, Psyshock, and Rain Dance, but there’s plenty of modifications to make depending on your team.  OVERALL:  I love Golduck. It’s always been one of my favorite Pokemon. Nothing it does is particularly splashy or overly interesting, but its stats are all decent and its move choice is decent, so it can hold its own just fine. Its biggest issue is that all it is is decent in everything. It has no really great ability or stat to lean into, and “water type that learns Ice beam” isn’t exactly uncommon. Gaining psychic moves is good, but Psychic’s only strong against Fighting and Poison, and if Rain Dance is up, Golduck’s doing just as much damage with a water move as he is with a super effective Psychic move. I’d like to see a regional variant of Golduck that gets the Psychic typing and has a smidge more special attack. Would it be good? Dunno, but I’d like to see it.
