Star Trek's "Lost" Main Character
Tumblr media
Just when you think you know everything there is to know about the original Star Trek, you learn something new, like the fact someone you barely remember was going to be a series regular. Take the case of "Yeoman Smith," played by Andrea Dromm, a petty officer secretary in "Where No Man Has Gone Before." Everyone knows that Trek had a first pilot with a different cast. But the cast of the second pilot was analyzed more in terms of who wasn't there (Dr. McCoy and Uhura were added only when the show went to series and were not in the second pilot at all), than who was.
One character in particular is easy to overlook as she seemed like just another lowly and invisible crewman, Yeoman Smith. Surprisingly, Andrea Dromm was hired to be a main character on the show.
The NBC publicity materials made for the second pilot mentioned and discussed her as they would Kirk and Spock, and treated her as a series regular, which at the time, she was:
Tumblr media
“YEOMAN SMITH, who has drawn the important assignment of secretary to the Captain on her first mission in deep space, is easily the most popular member of Kirk’s staff. A capable secretary and efficient dispenser of instant coffee, she also provides a welcome change of scenery for eyes that have spent long hours scanning the vast reaches of space.”
Almost from the beginning though, it was not to be. Andrea Dromm caused trouble on set because, according to Herb Solow, Gene Roddenberry "hired Dromm so he could 'nail her.'" Trek was in enough trouble, as Roddenberry cast his mistress, Rachel Lee Hudec (aka Majel Barrett), which violated his Desilu "virtue clause." Lucille Ball, embarassed by her former husband Desi Arnaz's well known extramarital antics, insisted on virtue clauses in contracts for creatives.
Tumblr media
As for what happened and why Yeoman Smith never ended up being a regular, we have two different conflicting stories. Andrea Dromm said she had to choose between making Star Trek, or making a film, "The Russians are Coming," and she picked the movie over a less prestigious tv show. Star Trek producer Herb Solow tells a different story and remembers that "Yeoman Smith" was one of two main characters who were let go to keep costs down when the show went to series. The other main character fired? James Doohan as Scotty.
After being informed he was fired after the first pilot, Doohan called his agent, the physically intimidating and formidable Paul Wilkins, who convinced Roddenberry to return Doohan to the series. It is not known how this was accomplished (Herb Solow, who's memoirs are the basis of most of what we know about early Trek, was not present, only Roddenberry was), but Doohan had his job back within the day.
Tumblr media
As for what would have happened with Yeoman Smith if she had stayed as a main character....who knows? The character of Yeoman Rand, well known for her beehive hairdo, was a replacement for her character, so it's likely that Yeoman Smith as a main character would have filled similar roles in stories, probably beat for beat and note for note. All the same however, it's hard to ignore how much more quiet moxie, no-bullshit stares, and extrovert elan Andrea Dromm projected on screen than the more subdued Grace Lee Whitney. Dromm's character was underdeveloped, sure, but so was Scotty and Sulu at that point, and the characters they eventually became were built around their actors' strengths and warmth. It's not hard to imagine something similar might be done with Dromm, and her character might have gone on very different lines from her replacement.

20 Questions
Prompt: A game of 20 questions that ends with “Can I kiss you?” Requested By: @spuffyfan394 (mystery prompt)
Plot: Y/n has a crush on Spock, and avoids him because of it. Spock has a crush on Y/n, but does not acknowledge it. After being exposed to unusual spores on a planet, you and Spock get placed in quarantine together. So, to pass the time, you decide to play a good old game of 20 Questions to learn more about each other. But, the classic game, seems to reveal more than expected.
Pairing: Spock (Disco/SNW) x GN!Reader
Warnings: Length? This is quite a long one lol. Also this is my first time writing for Disco/SNW Spock, so it might be slightly ooc.

-
You tried to keep your eyes straight ahead, or on the scanner, but you always found them wandering back to Spock as he walked in front of you. It would be so much easier if it wasn't just the two of you. If he had insisted on someone else coming along. Or just someone other than you.
When you had been told Spock wanted you to come with him down to the planet, you feared you would panic. You didn't think he would ever invite you on a mission, let alone acknowledge your training. Which, he seemed to know a remarkable amount about.
Once you arrived in the transporter room, you expected others as well. But you were met only by Lt. Commander Spock, to beam down with, and the Captain to see you off. You wanted to ask why, but you always found yourself somewhat speechless in Spock's presence, much to your own annoyance.
How could you form a crush on him without having had a conversation longer than a few sentences?
Maybe it was the way he seemed to know everything. Intelligence was sexy after all.
Plus, his voice, his voice seemed to send a chill up your spine whenever you heard it.
Or maybe it was the way that bits of his human side wold come through when he spoke to the Captain or Number One. The way he would raise one brown at a joke he did not understand. Or the way he would try to make a joke that only some could understand.
Being so lost in your thoughts, you missed when Spock looked back at you. He could tell you were lost in thought by the familiar look on your face. He often saw it when he would look at you on the bridge. You always seemed to be thinking about something, your mind never empty or calm, at least when you were working. Perhaps you were much more serene when you were off duty.
Being honest with himself, you intrigued him. You were one of the smartest officers on the Enterprise, but you never tried to prove yourself, or make yourself known.
You seemed to be burdened by heavy emotion, as he would sometimes catch you, when you think no one is looking, and he could see it all over you. But the second you know someone is looking, or the second you are needed, you can shut it away. Much like a Vulcan in some respects.
You were selfless and often put others burdens before yourself. He had heard many officers talking about ways you've helped them, or how you've put yourself in harms way to save them. He even saw it for himself once. And he admired you for that.
In a more human way than he was expecting, he found himself drawn to you. He would find his eyes wandering to you on the bridge. Or he would always pick up on your voice in the room. It was so much nicer to listen to that others. But he almost never heard it in close proximity. And when he did, he could never seem to tear his eyes away from you.
That was something that confused him, even troubled him in a way. When he would see you with others on board, you were all smiles and conversation. But the second you were with Spock, you were quiet, stoic, and barely ever spoke.
Did he intimidate you? Did you think he would chastise you for your usual demeanor? Did you hate him? Or, perhaps, did he make you nervous in another way?
"Uhm, Commander Spock?"
Spock halted in his steps at the sound of your voice and turned back to face you. You had stopped a ways back, and had a confused look on your face.
"Yes Lieutenant?"
"Isn't the signal coming from this way?" You asked as you pointed to the left of you.
Looking down at his own scanner, he realized that he had gotten so lost in thought that he had not been paying attention. Walking back towards you, he met your eyes. "You are correct. I apologize, I seemed to be lost in thought."
You just smiled at him and stepped away, signalling that he was to go ahead of you. His eyes lingered on you for a moment before he began to head towards the signal. It was close now, he needed to focus. He could think about you later.
You both came to a stop when you saw in front of you, a large field of big orange bulbs, that appeared to be flowers. The two of you looked at your scanned and back at the plants.
"The unusual signal we traced does seem to be coming from these plants" Spock said as he took a step closer.
"They don't appear to be dangerous, but it's hard to say, since the signal is unknown to us." you noted. "But what about them could be sending a signal so strong you can see it from orbit?"
"A good question indeed. Perhaps we should take a sample back to The Enterprise."
You nodded, as you reached into your bag and pulled out a small blade. Spock rose one brow as he saw this and you stared at him for a moment.
"What?"
He tilted his head lightly. "Do you always carry a blade with you?"
You paused awkwardly for a moment. "Yes?"
You saw his lip quirk slightly, in what you could only say was an almost smile. Even if it wasn't a full smile, it still made your blood rush.
Reaching towards the plant cautiously, you placed the blade at the stock and began to cut. As the whole plant seemed to move, you jumped back in alarm.
Spock stared in surprise as the flower seemed to lurch in reaction to your blade, before the leaves slowly started to unravel.
"I think I...hurt it." You said softly, guilt easily heard in your tone.
As the large bloom opened fully, you were taken aback at how beautiful it was. The inside was an array or oranges, reds and blacks. But your eyes were suddenly drawn to the center of the flower as a hole of some kind opened up. Suddenly a thick cloud of pollen was fired out, coating you and Spock.
You both tumbled back and covered your faces, coughing as you struggled to breathe.
"A defense mechanism." You coughed out.
Spock tapped his communicator. "Lt Commander Spock to Enterprise."
"Spock this is Captain Pike, what's going on down there? Your vital signs are spiking."
Spock shook his head as he grew dizzy. Looking over at you, he noticed you were leaning over, with your hands on your thighs as you tried to stay steady.
"The signal was coming from some sort of large flowering plant. We attempted to take a sample but it reacted in defense. We were hit with what seemed to be a large cloud of pollen, but now- now we are feeling affects of debilitation."
"Alright, get ready to be transported back."
"No!" You voice broke in, and Spock looked over at you. "My scans are showing signs of contagious toxin. If you bring us on board the pollen might effect anyone around us."
Spock looked at his scanner. "Lieutenant L/N is right Captain."
"Okay, then prepare for decontamination and quarantine protocols."
You and Spock locked eyes as you both swayed on your feet. Looking back down at the ground you sighed.
--------- --------- ---------
You looked around the empty room, it's bright lights shining down on you. Spock sat on a bench nearby, watching you. You felt goosebumps cover your arms as you realized this. It was hard for you to speak to Spock, your shyness around him making it so. But being in quarantine with him, alone and in complete silence was worse.
Purposefully looking around the barren room you finally spoke, somewhat alarmed at how loud your voice seemed in the empty room.
"Why do they keep these rooms so empty? Wouldn't you want to distract a patient from the thoughts that would be going through their minds in this sort of situation?"
Looking over at Spock, you saw him consider this as he looked around the room. Opening his mouth, you saw him hesitate for a second. "I- I do not know." His eyes met yours. "Logic would suggest the colors and silence in the room would be soothing."
You frowned and rose a brow. "Really? I feel like I'd go crazy in here after a while."
"Your argument does make sense as well. I am unsure as to why the room is so vacant."
"I mean, you'd think there would at least be books or something." You said as you walked to one side of the room. "It feels more like solitary confinement."
"Perhaps this is something you could bring up to the Doctor once we are released."
"Maybe I will." You said with a hint of agreement.
Spock watched you for another moment as you walked slowly to the nearby bed and sat down. You looked down at your feet, and tapped yours fingers rhythmically on the bed.
"I believe that was the longest conversation we have had during our acquaintance."
He watched as a small smile spread across your face, and you slowly looked over at him. "I think it was too."
"We have been on the same ship for quite a while, and even crossed paths at the academy."
He saw the way your eyes widened a bit. "I- I didn't realize you had noticed me. At the academy, I mean."
"I did. You often had the highest marks in many of your classes."
You repressed a smile and shrugged your shoulder as you leaned back and looked up at the cieling. "You were often the only person I couldn't do better than. Not that I ever expected too."
Spock watched you for a moment. "I would like to know more about you."
He saw the way you seemed to freeze, your breath hitched in your throat, your eyes widened for a second and you seemed speechless. After a moment you looked over at him. "You do?"
He nodded once.
Your heart was hammering in your chest. You never expected him to show any interest in you before, but now this was almost overwhelming. "Well, uh, what do you want to know?"
He thought to himself for a moment before he spoke. "I am unsure. Anything really."
You opened your mouth and found that you were unsure of what to say. Thinking back to your time at the academy, and how you got to know your roommate you turned towards Spock.
"How about a game of twenty questions?"
You watched as he rose one brow and tilted his head a bit. "I do not know that game."
"Well, there are technically two versions of the game. The original is one person thinks of an object, and the other player, or players, has twenty questions they can ask to narrow it down and guess it. But, there is another version, in which two people ask twenty questions, ten each in this case, about the other person, to get to know them."
Spock thought it over for a moment before he rose suddenly. You watched him as he walked over to you and sat down on the bed beside you, much closer than you had expected.
Meeting your eyes, he nodded once. "I would like to play."
Your breath was shallow as you adjusted yourself, unsure if you should move away or not. "Alright, I'll go first. Uhm..."
What did you want to know about him? Everything. But where should you start? Are there things he would find offensive? Things that might trigger bad memories? You decided to just start out simple.
"Alright. Question one, what is your favorite thing about Vulcan?"
Spock tilted his head as he thought about what you asked. Looking to the floor, and back to you, he spoke calmly. "I have always been fond of the warm colors that stretch across Vulcan during the evening."
"You like the sunsets?"
He looked back at you and nodded softly. "Yes. Is that odd?"
You shook your head. "No, no I love sunsets too."
Spock seemed lost in thought for a moment as he stared at you. Clearing your throat lightly you spoke softly. It's your turn now."
"Oh, yes." He looked down at his feet for a moment, and then back at you. "Why did you join Star Fleet?"
"Oh, well. It kind of ran in the family for a long time, before, well, before it didn't. My father was the first to break tradition, he never liked the idea of Star Fleet, I never really understood why. But, I always adored the idea of it. Especially after the stories I heard from my grandparents. Once I was old enough, I decided to go to the academy, even though my father did not approve. He doesn't talk to me much anymore, but my grandparents do." You smiled softly before you looked over at him and frowned a bit. "Was that an answer?" You almost laughed.
He smiled softly. "Yes, I believe I understood, and related in some ways."
You knew of Spock's decision to go to star fleet academy instead of the Vulcan science academy. And how it went against his father's ideals for him. You figured he would not want you to press on the topic. Fiddling with your fingers a bit, you thought of another question.
"Question three, why Science instead of any other division?"
"It seemed logical, as science has always been easy for me to comprehend, and...in many ways, enjoy." Before you could respond, Spock straightened up a bit. "I believe I have my next question."
You nodded in encouragement, and he spoke slowly. "Question Four. Do I intimidate you?"
You blinked in surprise and stared agape at him for a moment before you finally spoke. "I...can you ellaborate?"
"You never seem to be...comfortable around me, so I was wondering it there was a reason."
You felt a small wave of guilt wash over you. "Oh. Well...in some ways, yes. But in no way negatively. I mean, you were always above me at the academy, your intelligence and work ethic is much stronger than mine, so in some ways yes, you do intimidate me. But...I'm not uncomfortable around you, I just, didn't think you'd like me...I guess."
"I would ask you why you think that, but it is not my turn for a question."
You blinked before letting out a small laugh. "Alright, um, question five. I'm sorry that I made you think you made me uncomfortable. Can you forgive me?"
A small smile crossed his face briefly before he spoke. "I can, and do forgive you."
You smiled at him, and waited for him to speak again.
"Why did you think I would not like you?"
You let out a soft sigh. "I...don't have a great track record with Vulcan's. I think I annoy them, sometimes. I ask a lot of questions, and question a lot of their answers. So, I guess I just assumed that, like them, you would not really enjoy my company."
"I think questioning is the best way to learn. I do know that many Vulcan's do not wish to be questioned, or challenged, I have met the same problem during my life on Vulcan. So I believe, that is simply another thing we have in common. And, as to clear the air. I do like you."
You felt your heart palpitate, and your ears burn hot. Ignoring it you smiled at him. "Well, I will also add to the record, that I like you too."
Yours and Spock's eyes seemed to lock steadily for a moment as some form of tension began to build between you. Looking away, you stood up, and cleared your throat. You could feel your anxiety rising, as the tension in the room grew thick. You walked around the small area of the room.
"Alright, question seven. Why did you ask for me specifically to come down to the planet with you instead of another officer?"
"I believed you to be the most competent in the situation. On a previous mission in which we encountered an unusual signal, you were the first to figure out what it was. I thought perhaps this time, you could do the same again."
"Oh. Yeah, okay, that makes sense. Though, it proved to be wrong, as I have no idea how a plant can do that."
"Nor do I." He added. "Though, I would not doubt that you might have figured it out it we had more time, and were not in this situation."
You felt butterflies erupt in your stomach. "I appreciate the confidence in my abilities."
He nodded his head lightly in recognition before he suddenly stood up. You felt a small jolt as he did so, uncertain as to what he was going to do.
"Question eight. Why do you not display your abilities more often on The Enterprise? I believe you are one of the smartest officers on board, and more competent than most, yet you do not often express it except in times of need."
You shrugged a bit. "I'm not very fond of show-offs. Nor do I wish to play a game of who's the best when on bridge. It's not a competition to me."
"That is logical reasoning, though I would not be afraid to show off a bit in the future. You deserve to be recognized for your abilities."
"How is it you recognize them so easily?" You asked quickly, catching yourself off guard.
Spock approached you, and you felt your stomach clench. "That is your next question?"
"Yeah, I guess it is."
"I recognize them, because I notice you. Question ten, you were offered a position on another, more capable ship when you graduated the academy, why did you choose the Enterprise?"
You were thrown off by his comment leading so quickly into another question. "Because I didn't like the Captain, he was a bigoted war-lover. What do you mean you notice me?"
"I notice you because you stand out, even when you think no one see's you. Question twelve, there was another reason other than intimidation that causes you to avoid me, what is it?"
"I don't avoid you."
"Yes you do."
"I- I don't mean too."
He titled his head lightly. "But you do."
You felt as though you were being interrogated, but you were not afraid. "You make me nervous" You finally admitted.
"Why?"
"Not your turn." You countered and you saw his eyes seem to widen, as his lip curved up slightly. "Question thirteen, why is it so important to you that you know me?"
His eyes darted around your face for a moment before he spoke. "Because you intrigue me."
"Wh-" you stopped yourself before you finished, deciding to wait for your next question.
"Why do I make you nervous?" He asked again, his eyes almost burning into you.
Your heart was hammering in your chest, and you felt as though you might blow over with one stiff breeze. The tension between you and Spock was thick, and he seemed to get closer and closer with every question he asked.
"I think it may be because of the same reason I intrigue you."
He tilted his head to the side as he seemed to study your face. "And yet neither of us seem able to say it aloud."
"Why do you think that is?"
"Because it is logical to be afraid that one of us is mistaken, in thinking we know what the other is feeling." Your eyes were locked again, and neither of you had the will to look away. Spock took a small step closer as he spoke. "Do you have feelings for me Y/n?"
You seemed almost stuck in a trance as his eyes bored into yours. His voice was steady, and deep, and seemed to pull the truth out of you, as you mumbled a soft "Yes." Your breath was unsteady, and your voice soft. "So, was I mistaken?"
He softly shook his head "No." His eyes finally broke from yours as he looked at your lips. Meeting your eyes again, he leaned in closer to you, his face only a few inches away. "I believe we are on question eighteen of our game."
You nodded softly as you watched his eyes darted between your eyes and lips again.
"If I asked you, if I could kiss you. Would you say yes?"
You took a short breath, as you began to feel almost delirious. Was this a dream?
Your voice was soft, just above a whisper "Yes." This time your eyes darted from his eyes to his lips. "Are you going to ask if you can kiss me?"
As Spock inched a little closer, his lips almost brushing yours, he spoke "Yes". His nose brushed yours lightly, as he spoke his final question, his lips just touching yours as he spoke "Can I kiss you?"
You nodded your head almost unnoticeablely, as you whispered out a soft "Yes."
The word barely left your mouth before his lips were pressed against yours. You did not realize you were standing near the wall until your back was pressed against it as he deepened the kiss. One hand was cupping your face, as the other grabbed your waist. You pressed your hands against his chest and grabbed the fabric, before you brought one hand up to his neck, as you leaned into the kiss.
You seemed to get lost in each other, time passing without you really realizing. As you heard the room comm come on, and the Doctors voice echo through the room.
"Good news guys, you'll be out of their shortly. We only have one more test result to wait for."
"Thank you Doctor." Spock said almost breathlessly as he was still holding you close, his forehead pressed against yours and his eyes staring into yours.
"You guys need anything?"
"No. I believe we are quite content."
You smiled at this comment, as Spock gently caressed your cheek with his thumb. "I did not believe I would ever enjoy being in quarantine."
You let out a soft laugh. "Neither did I."
Spock pulled you into another deep, yet brief kiss. When he pulled away he smiled softly at you. "I apologize I took so long to make my feelings known."
"And I'm sorry I avoided you because of mine."
"I believe your game of twenty questions seemed to prove quite fruitful."
"Yes," you chuckled "I believe it did."

I wrote this before I watched SNW, so sorry if its a bit off
I had trouble finding a place to end this without it being left off awkwardly, but I hope you liked it! I know it was pretty long and a bit of a slow-burn lol.

Some spoiler-y obervations on today's SNW episode, "Hegemony":
I'm really glad we got to see an adult Gorn that looks more humanoid. When Sam found those anomalous human readings I was really concerned they'd go with a "TOS Gorn a weird Human-Gorn hybrids" thing.
ERICA GOT TO SAY MULTIPLE SENTENCES IM SO HAPPY
I was 100% sure Batel was gonna die when she made a log entry at the start :D Pleasently surprised by how that went
I kinda wish the Gorn weren't such a drawn-out plot with SNW. The feeling I'm getting is that they're just doing "Arena" but with eight episodes scattered over three seasons and I don't really see how that's gonna be better than "Arena". For what it's worth I'd love to get a closer look at how Gorn society in SNW actually works, like how did y'all build those spaceships if you keep cannibalising everyone. And to this episode's credit they did tease in that direction.
Definitely more on board with Scotty by the end of the episode than at the start. I really hope we can keep Carol Kane next season and have her mentor Scotty. I like what SNW has done with Spock, Uhura, Chapel and M'Benga; so I'm optimistic about Scotty, but my first instinct whenever a new major TOS character appears is generally to groan.
How exactly does a demarcation line within a solar system? Like, I'm no physicist, but don't planets usually rotate around stars? Wouldn't that shift planets in and out of Gorn/Federation territory depending on the time of year? Incidentally, there's a Trek novel (by Peter David of course) that explores that exact situation, where a planet is in (IIRC) Tholian territory for two days every year.
Pike's voice when he says "Spock" after seeing the destroyed Caygua is just TT
Seeing Pike interrupt Battel's mission here with a subspace phone call, I wish we'd see that more often the other way around. "Sorry honey, can't talk right now I have to make the pirates revolt against their captain, I'll call you back later okay?"
Love the music cues reminiscent of TOS. And I'm glad in general that the post-Berman Trek shows got to recover from the "sonic wallpaper" directive.
The Starfleet delta pattern on the space suits is really distracting. Like, I know I'm supposed to look at how they're hand-holding but wow, that is a lot of deltas!
It kinda rubs me the wrong way that Spock and Chapel killed the Gorn on the Cuyaga, just when the planetside story gets all about how maybe we can talk with the Gorn. Probably doesn't help that the Gorn took like ten seconds to suffocate and seemed to be in excruciating pain throughout. Like, c'mon Chapel, shoot him already, it's be more merciful.
I think SNW is actually quite clever with connecting its Gorn continuity to that of TOS. The SNW Gorn ships like very different from the TOS ones, which is great because in "Arena" no one recognizes the new ship. The Gorn are only revealed as the perpetrators in conversation with the Metrons, so I think it's feasable that Kirk just doesn't know of them (as long as his relationship with La'an doesn't get any further) and the rest of the crew didn't want to interrupt during the conversation with the seemingly very powerful Metrons. After Kirk is teleported by the Metrons Uhura screams, because 60s show (she should be used to teleportation right, being in Starfleet), but the SNW retcon that she knows of the Gorn and their horrors really gives that moment new depth and makes it less silly.

THE PHILON AWARDS ARE BACK!
KiScon is honoured to announce the relaunch of the Philon Awards. Established by Jenna Sinclair and Shelley Butler in 1997, they were an annual event organised by The K/S Press to honour outstanding authors and artists in K/S fandom. With the permission and support of Jenna and Shelley, KiScon is resuming this beautiful tradition.
There are 8 categories:
Short fic (word count under 10K)
Long fic (word count 10K-50K)
Novella/novel (word count over 50K)
Podfic
Traditional Art
Digital Art
Poetry
Zines
For each category the voters will determine a Gold (first place) and a Silver (second place) winner.
Rules
Nominating and Voting:
Nominations are open until 31 August, 2023. Each fan can nominate up to 3 works per category, but you cannot nominate the same work twice.
For a work to make it onto the voting ballot, it needs at least 3 nominations. Before we add it to the ballot, we will get in touch with the creator to ask whether they are fine with this!
Voting is open from 10 September to 1 November, 2023.
The winners will be announced during KiScon 2023. Each winner will receive a certificate and a small prize.
Nominating and voting both take place via Google Forms, and you need to be logged in in order to submit the form; this ensures that people do not nominate or vote multiple times for the same work. If we suspect sockpuppet activity, we will get in touch for clarification. We keep the nomination and voting process completely confidential! Only the KiScon concom will see the submitted forms.
You can submit the nominations form only once, but you can edit your responses if you need to add or change something (just follow the link in the email you receive after submitting the form). Please make sure to include every fanwork you want to see on the shortlist. You cannot edit your responses after nominations have closed.
Fanworks:
The work must focus on the pairing Kirk/Spock or Kirk & Spock. Slash (romantic and/or sexual relationship) and gen (friendship) are equally eligible. If a fic includes Kirk and/or Spock in relationships with other characters, be they canonical or original, this does not disqualify the work for the Philon Awards, as long as the focus is clearly on Kirk and Spock's relationship.
Art must feature Kirk or Spock or both of them; additional characters in the artwork are allowed, but no depiction of Kirk/Other or Spock/Other.
All universes are welcome: TOS (series and movies), TAS, and reboot, Discovery and Strange New Worlds. AUs and mirror universe are equally allowed. Crossovers between different Trek franchises or between Trek and other media are permitted, as long as Kirk and Spock are the work’s main characters.
RPF works (e.g. Shatnoy) are not eligible.
All ratings and genres are allowed. If a work among your nominations includes strong elements that would merit a warning on the AO3 (e.g. rape, major character death etc.), we'd appreciate a heads-up on the nominations form, so that we can make sure to include the warning on the shortlist.
The work must be complete. It can be part of a series, but the work itself must not be a WIP (missing chapters or a draft/unfinished sketch).
The work must have been created and published (print or online) after KiScon 2022. So everything from 7 November 2022 onwards until the end of the nomination phase (31 August 2023) is eligible. Reprints or uploads of earlier works (e.g. a fic you wrote and published a few years ago and uploaded to the AO3 only recently) cannot take part in this contest.
For podfic the creation/publication date of the actual podfic counts, not of the written fic that inspired it.
AI-generated fic is NOT allowed.
Traditional art means that it was hand-drawn or hand-painted; scanning or photographing the finished work in order to publish it online is allowed, of course.
With digital art, we mean art that was created by a fan artist directly on a tablet or computer, or art that started out as hand-drawn and underwent significant digital alterations in the next steps. We do NOT allow AI-generated art! Manips based on still images or photos of the actors are not eligible in this contest.
Zines: Both e-zines and print zines published between 7 November 2022 and 31 August 2023 are eligible.
Last but not least: these awards are meant to be fun and a celebration of the K/S fandom. The shortlist will double as lovely rec list! We get to talk about our faves and let the creators know that we love their works.
You can fill in the nominations form embedded on the KiScon website, or (if your device does not display it properly) you can find it directly at this link.

A Whovian Watches Star Trek for the First Time: Part 115 - Starship of Babel
Star Trek: Discovery - Season 2 Episode 4 - An Obol for Charon
Tumblr media
Today's episode opens with not a resolution to any of the immediate ends to what was happening last episode, but with Discovery beaming Pike's First officer on board, "Number One" from the Q&A Short Trek and also went unnamed in the Cage. She still doesn't get an actual name here.
We get a bit of an update about Enterprise's situation, things are still in desperate need of repair, and we find out that Number One has also been doing a bit of digging into Spock's situation, however Pike is drawn away before details can be discussed.
Down in Engineering Paul Stamets and Sylvia Tilly are looking after "May". The creature still seems to be clued into Sylvia's emotions in some way, which is interesting. Sylvia goes on a mini speech about how she wasn't the best friend to the real May as a kid, and the fungal creature reaches out and sort of forms a hand. It's a scene kinda touching and kinda creepy. I'm really interesting in this Fungal creature and what motives are, and how it works.
In the ready room, some of the staff are discussing the Red Angel. No federation known species matches it's appearance. Apparently Saru is suffering a cold. This conversation is a nice bit of recap, but it doesn't really amount to much that we didn't already know about the Red Angel. Pike enters and dismisses everyone except Michael, so can finally talk about Spock stuff. Apparently Number One had retrieved the path that Spock's shuttle took after escaping the psychiatric facility, and Discovery is already on an intercept course. Michael immediately asks to be excused from this mission, due to the unknown trauma she caused him. Pike starts a bit of a pep talk to Michael, but Discovery is then slammed to a hault, and left in front of this giant red swirling ball of something.
And then the intro plays. I've noticed this a lot with Discovery, but it's Cold Opens are really long.
After the Intro, we gather to discuss what this thing is, and then suddenly everyone is speaking different languages! This fun little premise, and I kinda wish the whole no-one can understand eachother bit lasted a bit longer, but after a bit of confusion, Saru is called to the bridge. It's previously established that Saru knows a lot of languages, so he's definetly going to be the MVP here. Of course, he still has a cold, so he's gonna have to fight through that. He gets the Universal translator back online, but the rest of the Bridge's systems are still scrambled through other languages.
Apparently the rest of the ship is unaffected though, Engineering is still perfectly functional. We get a fun little spat between Paul and the more traditional Engineer we picked up in episode 1, which I thought was fun. As everyone scrambles to repair Discovery, the Computer Virus runs through more of the ships systems. Paul, Sylvia and Reno end up trapped in the Spore Drive control room, with the "May" Creature, which latches onto Sylvia. The Bridge is loosing control of everything, and Saru's illness take a turn for the worse. Internal communications are also knocked out
I've said it before with Enterprise, but I love how Star Trek depicts chaotic all hands on deck moments, where everyone is dashing about in the background trying to stabilise things. This is no exception, and I'm absolutely loving how we're seeing this confusion across the entire ship, more than just The Bridge and Engineering, which was often the case for Enterprise.
Down in Sickbay, Saru is really anxious to report any symptoms to the ship's doctor. After a bit of coaxing however, we find out this is more than a simple cold: Apparently it's a unique condition among Kelpiens, and apparently it's going to kill him. This ties into his Short Trek from before we Started Discovery. Apparently, whatever the sphere is, it's causing the same response as that crystal which selected Kelpiens to be slaughtered. This process is called Vahar'ai, and will either kill him, or make him succumb to madness. Saru has an idea on how to fight back against the computer virus, albiet in a very weak way, but it would slow the progress and give the crew a little bit of time to regain control, and Michael moves off to enact this digital antibody plan. Saru accepts that he is dying, and moves out to help Michael out.
While Michael and Saru are working on this, we get a really nice heart to heart between them about the nature of Saru's culture and how he thinks he just isn't built to keep fighting in the way Michael does. This is probably the best time to note that I love what the make-up department have done with him this episode. The way he walks with kind of a weird lean this episode, the perspiration on his face looks just great. This one on one scene was definetly the best part of the episode for me, I love digging into characters like this and Saru's unique relationship with the universe as a member of a species that are basically livestock animals is so fascinating to me.
With the spore-drive gang, May is apparently influencing May's thoughts. Apparently it's pumping a hallucinogen into her to calm her, although Paul and Reno have different ideas of what it's motives are. Michael ends up heading to engineering to ask them reactivate shields, unaware of their current situation. Engineering of course can't do anything at the moment, they're locked out of all systems, and Sylvia is dropping in and out of conciousness. Paul has a great idea. What he's gonna do is rework a part of the spore drive interface to let may hijack Sylvia's nervous system, and this is explained better in the episode and makes more sense there. But it will let us communicate with may, and Michael thinks something similar might be happening with the sphere, and the Virus could be a form of communication.
Michael shares this theory with Saru, and he deduces that the Sphere is trying to communicate the fact that it was dying, and wants to be remembered. Pike accepts this, and lowers the shields to accept the transmission, but I love that he still has a back-up plan in place.
Meanwhile with May, the process isn't working, and they start proposing makeshift surgery to make the communication process easier, and the whole trepanning thing felt like unnecessary trauma for my poor Neurodivergent girl, but the episode goes thankfully is quick with it. Once communication is established, May reveals her motives. Apparently she views the Discovery's use of the Mycelium network as invasive, and plans to kill Paul, and is now effectively holding Sylvia hostage to that end.
Unfortunately, Saru is still suffering symptoms, and I actually thought they fully kill him here and I was crying, him reminiscing about his sister while asking Michael to sever his Ganglia, and paralleling his relationship to his sister with Michael's relationship to Spock broke my heart. I don't particularly like death fake outs, but I love Saru, so I'm kinda happy that happened here. Also, it means were might be able explore a new side of Saru soon, because apparently without his Ganglia fear is no longer his primary drive, so I'm excited to see where they take him. Also on a side note, I love the design of his quarters.
Tumblr media
At the end of the episode we're left with Sylvia being taken into the spore network by May as our cliffhanger.
This has been my favourite episode of Season 2 so far, it had a lot of fun moments, I loved parallel situations between the Bridge crew and the Engineering crew. The many touching scenes with Saru here were great. I loved this one.

Round 2: Fight 6
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kotetsu T. Kaburagi/Barnaby Brooks Jr (Tiger & Bunny) vs James T. Kirk/Spock (Star Trek)
Propaganda under the cut!
Kotetsu T. Kaburagi/Barnaby Brooks Jr (Tiger & Bunny):
My silly little guys I don't want to rant your ear off but that dynamic can be agrued either way because they are rival to lovers 10/10 My favourite pookies
I could rant your ears off with the propaganda for Barnaby Brooks Jr. and Kotetsu T. Kaburagi from Tiger & Bunny but because tumblr asks have a character limit I'll try to keep it brief.
(Spoilers for Tiger & Bunny of course)
They're the definition of fell first x fell harder. Barnaby and Kotetsu are of the rivals to friends to lovers trope, they absolutely despised each other at first, but even when they couldn't stand each other they felt inexplicably drawn to each other.
Barnaby fell first, he was the first to feel something romantic for Kotetsu, warming up to him as soon as episode 3 (when they're deactivating a bomb and Kotetsu refuses to leave him behind on principle he smiles when Kotetsu isn't watching) but he fully acknowledges his feelings in episode 8, when Kotetsu takes a direct hit from a dangerous villain to protect Barnaby. This is seen in the post credits scene as he reminisces of the events of that day and smiles to himself alone in his apartment. When they have a fight in the climax of the first half of the season, the only way the conflict is resolved is by Kotetsu going out of his way to put his trust in Barnaby, and after the day is saved, Barnaby finally allows himself to smile in front of Kotetsu.
Kotetsu fell harder. He was in denial about his feelings for almost all of season 1; he is a widow, and through the series he is shown to not have truly grieved his wife's death, and as of season 1 he is not ready to move on and accept he could have romantic feelings for anyone after Tomoe (his wife), and he is also afraid to fall in love again and lose them too. During the second half of season 1, Barnaby is brainwashed and no longer remembers him, believing Kotetsu was the one to murder a person he was close with. Kotetsu tries everything he can think of to make Barnaby remember him, and when it doesn't work he breaks down (crying in front of another person for the first time in the show) and stops fighting back, he kneels down and lets Barnaby deliver the final blow to him...
Luckily for him, Barnaby remembers just in time! They can go back to pining hell!
But not long after (since the main conflict isn't resolved yet) Kotetsu is fatally wounded, which triggers the most fucking glass biting nail scratching absolute fucking insane Technically Not love confession in which neither of them say "I love you" but it's very clear for anyone with two functioning eyes and a couple braincells that it is indeed a declaration of love. I will link it down here so everyone else can suffer with me. https://youtu.be/CWizW_6AgQY?si=UNsyhF-yJX1bT78r
While not explicitly in a romantic relationship, the creators of the show have said the nature of their bond is "Up to interpretation", which (considering the history of the studio regarding gay relationships) sounds more to me like "Everyone here wants to make them kiss so bad but they'll cancel the show if we do"
Sorry if this was too long
(this would take up too much space so for the ver with images you can go check it out here -mod)
James T. Kirk/Spock (Star Trek):
Kirk fell first, Spock fell harder

Hey guess what
Did you guess "new blog in the smash or pass ecosystem but this one specialises in trek characters"? I fucking hope so. Because that's all I've got here!
I was inspired of course by @charactersmashorpass / @charactersmashorpass-2 but also @smashingorpassing and especially @ace-attorney-smash-or-pass who put the fandom specificity idea in my head.
Please only interact (this includes submitting characters) if you are 18 or older. If you're part of a system, this has to be true both for all fronters at the time of any given interaction and for the body. All polls will run for a week, if one doesn't I posted it wrong and you're free to point it out.
Rules for character submissions:
(they got a bit long so they're going under the cut, along with the link)
Has to be from a licensed Star Trek medium. Beta canon is fine, OCs are not. Unless it's very funny, then I might make a (rare!) exception.
They don't have to be a major character or even appear more than once but it'd be good if there was enough canon information for people to make an informed decision. Having a canon appearance (that isn't super blurry) would almost always fulfil this requirement but you may have to provide an image yourself.
It is not a requirement for it to be feasible to have sex with them. If you wanna fuck a non-corporeal character, we'll assume you'd figure out a way. It will be assumed they also really wanna try to have sex with you if you choose smash.
Controversially, I will not have a universal minimum age but they do have to pass the Harkness test which includes being of sexual maturity for their species (tho I'll rule they also have to be of more general maturity for their species, some real life humans become "sexually mature" before their teens but that doesn't mean you should fuck them; characters from asexually reproducing species will ofc only be judged on overall maturity). If their age is unknown or it's unknown when their species would be considered mature, I will consider the way the narrative treats them. So TL;DR: Kes is fine, Zero is not.
(As an extension of this, artificial life forms designed to function like adults will not be disqualified based on how long they've been active while artificial life forms designed to emulate children/minors will never qualify. Where this line is drawn in unclear cases will be decided by me on a case by case basis. So the EMH is fine, Lal is not.)
If the character is shown at different life stages, I will judge based on the one people are most likely to think of when they think of that character. So Spock is fine, Wes is not. This rule will not change if you submit a picture of them as an adult.
That said, you are allowed to submit specific versions of a character, including alternate timeline versions, if they pass all other requirements, eg you can submit specifically Solid Odo or Dilf Harry from the episode Timeless, but you still can't submit adult Naomi from Shattered.
I reserve the right to reject any submission, especially if I have reason to believe it was made in bad faith, but other than that scenario I don't think this is likely to happen.
Here's the link to the submission form:
Have fun! <3

Never Say Never
Spock had lived his entire life as an outsider, existing on the fringe of Vulcan society in many ways despite his father’s illustrious diplomatic career and family name. His very existence made him a curiosity, which in itself was neither good nor bad—but even Vulcan children could be cruel, and the human DNA in Spock’s genetic code made him more emotionally vulnerable to that cruelty than any of his peers. He rejected his inherent humanity at every turn, embracing only his paternal heritage, and devoted a great deal of time and effort to becoming a perfect Vulcan man. He would prove the childhood bullies wrong. He would prove himself worthy to his father...though in quiet moments of reflection or meditation, he sometimes questioned how Sarek could have chosen to marry and father a child by a human woman, only to then be critical of every human trait that child displayed.
Beyond where he stood, the surf roared and crashed until it crept, whispering, onto the sand. Cold, frothy seafoam licked at Spock’s bare toes before slipping away again to resume its primordial dance, the steps dictated by cosmic forces millions of miles away. He was unsure exactly how long he had stood here, mesmerized as he gazed out on the blue-grey water gilded by the late-afternoon sun, but his face and feet were growing chilled. This was the third afternoon he’d come here. The experience of watching and listening to the Terran sea had a calming, almost meditative effect on his mind. He wondered if it also spoke to some latent humanity within him without really believing such a thing was possible.
His Vulcan features and behavior made Spock just as much of a curiosity here on Earth as he’d been on the planet of his birth. No one could tell that he was, in fact, half human. But now he was also something other than just an outsider. He was an outcast. Sarek had, upon learning of his son’s enrollment in Starfleet Academy, made it clear that he was no longer welcome in his house. While Spock’s imminent departure for Earth had robbed the words of their immediate impact, it couldn’t alter the rejection inherent within them. The many years he’d spent trying to fit in to his society and to please his father appeared to have been in vain.
Now, many light-years away from the burning Vulcan sun and with an alien sea filling his keen senses, Spock wondered idly whether he and his father would ever speak again. Perhaps if he did as well in his Academy courses as he always had in childhood…
Frowning, Spock let that incomplete thought fade from his mind. He wasn’t here to make Sarek proud. He was here because he wanted to be. Rather than settle logically on a career path that he could follow, as was expected of him, to the Vulcan Science Academy, Spock’s sharp young mind had always hungered for ever-more knowledge on all subjects...and his eyes and imagination were forever drawn back to the stars that glittered overhead. The various interplanetary diplomatic trips on which he sometimes accompanied his parents had only furthered his conviction. Someday, he would live and work out there among those distant points of light.
From some distance down the beach Spock heard the cheerful clamor of people gathering. The sun hadn’t yet set, but they had already built a bonfire on the sand. Some part of him—the human part, he supposed, still reeling from the events of the last two weeks—yearned to walk down and join them. But whether they were fellow Starfleet cadets or not, he doubted his presence would be welcome, nor would he have any idea how to conduct himself. Classes began in a few days. He would bury any loneliness and homesickness he felt in his studies and focus on his goals.
He turned away from the sun-drenched waves and began walking towards the rocks where he’d deposited his shoes and cloak. Perhaps tonight he would try to find a restaurant that offered more appealing dishes than the Academy’s food synthesizers.

I have drawn a one-page comic, set in an alternate universe, where, around the time TOS is set, the Federation is attacked by a powerful enemy, that destroys and conquers everything in their path. Faced with this, Vulcans have to make a decision.
This is different from my ussual posts, but I hope you enjoy it. Live Long and Prosper.
Tumblr media
Text and description:
1)[a panel of plain text] The Federation has been attacked by an enemy that does not respect life. They are vicious and kill without remorse. Many planets have fallen. Negotiations were futile. T'Pau, Matriarch of all Vulcan, announces to her people, the state of things.
2) [disc shaped spacecrafts attack a planet]
"We were attacked without a warning."
3)[four individuals of different species, dressed in formal clothes] "Negotiators were sent"
4)[same individuals, with their faces crossed]
"And lost."
5)[a planet, with its surface burned]
"Some planets were razed."
6)[pieces of rock floating in space]
"Some reduced to rubble."
7)[Armed soldiers, in spacesuits that cover their faces, approach a house. A city burns in the background.]
"Some were conquered, their people treated as cattle."
8)[T'Pau on a platform, with an auditorium around. There are two incense cauldrons behind her.]
"Hear me, people of Vulcan!"
"Our world is in danger, as are all the worlds to which we had sworn our loyalty as allies!"
9) [A close up on T'Pau's eyes.]
"We remembered the teachings of Surak, we offered them peace, and after they murdered our messengers we offered them peace again, but the enemy we face today does not believe in peace!"
10) [T'Pau on the podium. The cauldrons are slightly smoking.]
"Their only resolve is for all of us to be killed! And this is a price for peace which we will not accept!"
"I stand before you, people of Vulcan, to give you the announcement of what was decided when the enemy decided to destroy us!"
11) [The shot gets closer. The cauldrons begin to burn.]
"Today, Vulcan is at war!"
"We are at war!"
12) [A far shot with the auditorium visible.]
"I will not ask you to kill, for whatever we do, we may perish the same, but I do ask you to have courage!"
13)[Amanda, Sarek, Spock, Michael and several other people stand on a balcony in the auditorium.]
"So even if we die,"
14)[T'Pring and Stonn watch a holoprojection of the speech. He has his arm around her.]
"it shall be remembered,"
15)[Several people watch the projection on screens in a public place.]
"that Vulcan died unafraid!"
16) [And adult Andorian hugging a child while a masked soldier approached them with a weapon.]
"And if you choose to fight, when you shall take up your arms remember that you fight not only for yourself,"
17)[A galaxy from afar.]
"but for every being in this galaxy! For their very existence! "
18)[T'Pau close up, with a determined expression. The cauldrons burn intensely. ]
"We are warriors!"
19)[Three panels: A middle aged Vulcan touches a weapon on the wall, then passes a sword to a teenager, the teenager dressed themselves in armor with the sword at their belt.]
"We layed our weapons down to ensure our survival, and for survival we shall now bear them again!"
20)[A disc shaped spacecraft blown up by phaser.]
"We shall fight with fire"
21)[a bloodied lirpa]
"and steel,"
22)[Kolinahru standing in a ring, holding hands.]
" and thought!"
23)[Three Romulans, a man in a military uniform, a woman in a military uniform and a woman in a loose civilian dress watch the holoprojection together. The women are holding hands.]
"And our brothers who march beneath Raptor's wings will fight along our side!"
24) [Six panels, each with a close up of a formally dressed Vulcan.]
"I speak to you, peers of the High Court,"
"give the sign to your people! "
"Give them the yon'savas to mark their faces!"
25) [Close up of T'Pau. The cauldrons behind her burn with tall, intense flames.]
"Let it be known for all times!"
"To face us is to face defeat!!"

Rewatching DS9 and VOY has just made me want to do episode rewrites but with the TOS crew. So what about Voyager s2 e25 Resolutions but with TOS mckirk or AOS spones. This is a kinda long post and just my random thoughts so heres a keep reading
So Jim and Bones are stuck on a planet while infected with some virus that doesn't effect them while on the surface. And the Enterprise then has to leave because of some reason. So Spock is left in charge like Tuvok was and has to deal with the fact that the Captain and CMO have been left behind and with the growing resentment towards him even though Kirk ordered them to leave.
Also like the idea of Bones being busy researching how to cure them while Jim quickly grows to enjoy the easy living and maybe for once in his life the ship isn't a burden on him. While bones is losing his mind because being stuck on a planet with nothing but researching this one cure is like Bones' worse nightmare. (like i know most people would think Bones would be like Chakotay but its my episode rewrite and i can do what i want). Also the idea of Jim wanting to build them a log cabin extension is very fun. Also since neither of them have any romantic attachments they actually do something about the romantic tension and then have to deal with that when they get back on the ship.
Though I'm not sure if they would have to ask for help from some enemy or Bones would just figure out a cure. Maybe Bones finds a cure and then isn't sure what to do since Jim seems so happy and he doesn't want to ruin that or maybe he thinks if they go back to the ship Jim will just pretend what happened on the planet didn't. And then a day later the ship comes back with a cure and he has to deal with the fact that he didn't instantly tell Jim about it. And of course Jim finds out and hes conflicted because he wants to be angry at Bones for not telling him right away but hes also angry that the cure was found at all so its a whole mess.
Or if it was AOS it would be Bones and Spock who are left behind mainly so it would mirror the fact that Janeway has a partner back home so spones just have awkward weird romantic tension. (not sure if this would have mckirk as well or just spuhura) Though in this version nothing would actually happen on the planet cos no cheating thanks, also not enough time would have past where they actually think theres no going back. Not sure either Spock or Bones would be like Chakotay, they'd both be super focused on finding a cure. They would also have to deal with this fallout on the ship but it would be in a very different way than TOS mckirk. Maybe if theres no mckirk it would end up with mccoy/spock/uhura in some configuration. Though if mckirk was already a couple it would stay the two different couples. lmao or maybe mckirk comes out of it since jim realised how much he actually missed Bones. i dont know this is post is turning into a mess
So its Jim and Nyota who have to deal with leaving the people they care most about behind. As i think there would be less resentment from the crew to deal with. I'm sure the med crew would miss their boss but they would have less power to make a fuss about it.
But theres still the fact that they're not as far away from starfleet as Voyager was and why the ship would leave but like why should that stop me?
I mean it could also just be AOS mckirk on the planet but for some reason i'm more drawn to the TOS version in this instance

Why Tylorpe
Why do I (like me specifically) write tylorpe?
Tyler x Xavier:
Tyler and Xavier together? They make a lot of sense to me as a ship to write because they have so much in common with their trauma/manipulation (and how Wednesday and their fathers turned her back on them).
They have a history with the mural and the assault. And they had a connection the whole show (the paintings and the glares/eye rolls/fake rivalry). And with Tyler theoretically on the loose, Xavier is bound to dream where he goes next.
That mental bond between them is cannon, and even if their romance will (likely) never be cannon, it’s perfect fuel for writing fanfiction. Especially because they had so few on-screen interactions, I get to shape how they interact in a variety of ways, and play around with it.
(Eight more sections below; I’m aware it’s a lot, but it’s fun idk; warning: I vaguely mention abuse a few times)
Easy form Canon to AU’s:
With a relationship this implied but not shown in cannon, I can write a book where they have secret crushes on each other from the start, or they hate each other at the start. They could become friends, unwilling co-heros, or lovers by the end, and there won’t be many scenes to contradict the plausibility of how these interactions play out, as long as the characters and the setting stand their ground, it can make the book feel very real.
But I still have the option to write crazy AUs like in any other ship. Especially because they are two (basically) humans set in the current time period, I can more easily translate them to the past or future or to a simple high school au, or to a whole new magic system - which can be harder for me in other fandoms.
For example if I tried writing Sherlock as an American in 2100, or writing Spock as an Australian teenager in the 90′s- it can get wonky in translation for me because I’m not as familiar with the source (britishness and space ig). This setting of Jericho in 2022 is (roughly) in my home turf, so I can easily practice writing Tyler and Xavier in different settings or situations the show isn’t interested in pursuing.
History of abuse:
I relate to characters like Tyler and Xavier who have been manipulated and abused, so they are easier to write because I get far more invested in them.
And the fact that some people in the fandom don’t like their characters actually makes me even more invested. I feel like all the criticism for their characters applies to me as well. I feel evil for doing evil things under someone else’s control (tyler), and boring for hiding my pain and staying out of the spotlight in my friend group(Xavier), and I feel fake, like my whole life was designed on a whim to be a prop in other people’s story of emotional growth (criticism I’ve heard for both of them).
By writing these characters as real people, I feel like I can do them justice while uncovering my past and fighting my misbeliefs along the way.
Relating to a story:
So many shows have manipulated/abused characters, but I often can’t relate to them because they fight back and win, (often fairly easily in the face of world-ending doom), with lots of help from peers, mentors, and destiny. And that’s not my story, and I think there is enough of that going around that I don’t personally have to explore it rn.
I see the plot of a ‘teenage chosen one taking on the world and winning.’ And I am drawn to them because they are teenagers/young adults in a world they don’t understand (in their case because magic or mystery) but it’s still a world I have stakes in, which I relate to.
But I need more stories about the people who didn’t have the help they needed right away. I want to see someone living a full life while recovering from the fighting the unexplainable as well as the mundane battles in life. And I feel like Tyler and Xavier meet that criteria.
I need magic and mystery:
But I still need the story to be told through a guise of a world with magic because it keeps me from relating so much that I’m just living my own life again. I want the to see the same themes as my life, but a clearly different setting or plot that I can explore.
And the magic and mystery being thrown in help me remember that I don’t know everything about life, so it feels like there is hope and opportunity around every corner.
Timing the aftermath:
And these magical YA shows also usually end dramatically before you see the aftermath of them dealing with how their life has changed. Theoretically the aftermath is not exciting. But I think that it can be. Not every hero has to be bright eyed and innocent at the start of the story. They can have a past, and I think that makes them far more interesting. But this whole show Tyler and Xavier are dealing with their aftermath (and the whole next season will be about this too!).
Tyler’s trauma:
Tyler’s trauma is revealed at the end, but it began before the show started. And his trauma is still ongoing, and that resonates with me. We don’t know if Laurel is gone forever and idk if I’m in the clear either, but rooting for Tyler also helps me root for myself.
Tyler was just an everyday barista in a small town who lives in a single-parent household. All that everyday stuff plus his trauma was there in him, weighing him down every time he smiled, laughed, joked, or spent a week on latte art. But he still managed to do those things. And that complexity just feels very real, and it draws me in.
Xavier’s trauma:
Xavier’s trauma was never shown explicitly, and that makes him an amazing character for me. I can’t always remember what happened, but I can feel the aftermath. Xavier has clear themes: not being believed (being locked up by Wednesday and so many other things), not trusting his own feelings (Bianca), and his need to appear fine (from his father’s PR demand). And all of that is such a comparatively small part of the show, but it’s just so important to me.
I relate so much to Xavier’s character in these ways. I withdraw and I don’t know if it’s therapy or hiding from the world (like his art shed), put my hopes on people as a form of self-sabotage (his crush on Wednesday that he knew was doomed), and I react in strange and surprising ways due to my internal conflict (like Xavier giving Tyler the scarf; hiding the hyde paintings).
Xavier gets out of jail at the end, but his relationship with Bianca and Tyler and even Wednesday are all still basically unresolved. And that opens up my options as a writer on the other end. I can write the trauma, and I can write the outcomes. But the show set up a really good character somewhere in there between snarky comments, school dances, and genocidal zombies.
Queerness is powerful:
And of course, I also write tylorpe because I love queer ships. I’m a masculine-type person who likes masculine-type people(not exclusively, but it’s up there), so that’s a big part of why I write tylorpe over wenclair.
I don’t always include the conflict of sexual orientation/gender identity in my writing, but it always adds another emotional dimensions for me. Everyone can relate to not knowing who they are, or not accepting parts of themself because of others opinions. And most can relate to the struggle of finally realizing who you are and wanting to be loved for it. But not everyone is there yet, and I’m not always there, so I like having the reminder.
To me, that queer inner conflict always feels more powerful than two people who know who they are, and what they want and then they just get it. I want and emotional journey of self discovery, and I prefer it to be about queer matters over other forms of identity crisis, because I understand it more, so I feel like I can tell a better story with it, and get more out of it.
I also love writing coming out scenes, and it’s nice to show examples of characters being in love and happy with or without their parents approval, because all those stories need to be told. But I also like writing in a world were there is no stigma, and they just become partners and everyone is happy for them, and maybe the journey was just one of self discovery, instead of a battle to overcome others baseless fears.
--
So yeah, that’s what’s on my mind today, and that’s why I’m writing tylorpe again....Thank you for coming to my tylorpe class today lol <3

Against All Odds
Part 745
McCoy
“What do you think Chris got Robbie?” McCoy asked quietly as they made their way to their seats.
“No idea,” Scotty shrugged.
McCoy slipped his coat and scarf off and hung them on the back of his chair. They hadn’t had time to go up to their room yet. McCoy looked up the table. Not everyone was present yet, but it was still obvious Jim and Pete wouldn’t be joining them again.
“How long is Jim in for?” McCoy asked Spock across the table.
The tips of Spock’s ears colored as he looked over at the prince.
“The rest of the week sir.”
McCoy sighed. Pike had made it clear that Jim had run his mouth, setting off the fight, but it still didn’t seem fair.
“I heard Aaron asked to switch rooms,” Sulu said in a hushed voice.
McCoy looked up the table again. Aaron had been sitting closer to the head near Archer since he had become head boy. Now he was sitting right next to Archer, away from his normal friends and the empty seat that belonged to Pete. They were roommates McCoy remembered. He couldn’t blame Aaron for wanting to switch rooms.
“Where would he go?” Chekov asked. “Robbie is the only one alone.”
McCoy saw Robbie’s face pale.
“He and Pete have been roommates since they started here,” Sulu said.
“He’s grown and Pete hasn’t,” Scotty said. McCoy heard the reluctance in his fiancé’s voice to make the statement.
There was a moment of satisfaction for McCoy when he and Scotty entered the lounge after dinner. They had gone to their room first to put away their coats. McCoy kept a grin from his face, though the corner of his mouth trembled, as he watched Jocelyn notice them. She rolled her eyes, and made a show of getting up and leaving.
“I could get used to that,” McCoy whispered to Scotty when she was finally gone.
“Aye, me too.”
Quickly they were drawn into a game of cards with Christine and Sulu. McCoy’s eyes drifted around the room as they played. He frowned to see Aaron sitting by himself, when normally he was with a group. Pete, of course, was restricted to their room the rest of the week. Quite a few of the others of their group seemed to have followed Jocelyn from the room.
McCoy thought about what Sulu had said at dinner. How hard was it to have a falling out with someone and then have to still share a close space with them? He knew about it a little with Jocelyn still at the school, but they didn’t share a room and she had been ordered to stay away from him.
“Alright love?” Scotty asked. “It’s your turn.”
“Oh. Sorry,” McCoy said, looking at his cards. He played one, and went back to his thoughts.
Pike and Archer wouldn’t move him into Robbie’s room, would they? Surely they had to know what the Scott brothers had been through from the other students. Even with Aaron having apologized McCoy knew that wasn’t enough. Neither brother needed to have more to do with Aaron than necessary even if McCoy had made friends with the other boy.
And Robbie had most likely grown quite used to his privacy. He disappeared soon after dinner every night and they all knew it was to call Leah.
“Len?”
McCoy gave himself a shake and looked at Scotty.
“Your turn again. Do you want to stop?” Scotty was looking at him with some concern.
“Sorry, sorry.” He looked around at Christine and Sulu. “Was just lost in some thoughts,” he apologized.
He played another card, then glanced once more at Aaron. He hoped there was a solution.
Part 746
Robbie
Even though he wanted to relax after dinner, Robbie couldn't help but think about what Sulu had told them earlier. Aaron wanted to change rooms.
The mere thought of the possibility of the two of them sharing a room was pure horror to Robbie. He didn't want to be in the same room as the boy who had taunted him for so many years.
If it hadn't been for the new students who had arrived with Jocelyn, then Aaron could simply have taken Khan and Joaquin's room. With the additional lads and lasses, that wasn't possible though.
Robbie let out a heavy sigh and let his head sink deeper into his pillow. He stared at the white ceiling above him.
The augments. He wondered how they were doing. What was it like to sit in a prison? To be isolated from the rest of the universe?
They had been promised that no one would harm them, but... it was still a cruel punishment. One they deserved, but cruel nonetheless.
Robbie thought back to his old so-called friends back in Aberdeen. They had almost gotten him into prison too. Sometimes he wondered how their lives were going, but then again, he was glad that he had banned them from his life. They had been a bad influence, just like Scotty had said. And they were probably all running from the law by now.
A knock on the door pulled Robbie from his thoughts and he placed the PADD he was holding in his hands aside and got to his feet.
"Aye? Who is it?"
"Me."
Robbie smiled gently. That high-pitched voice could only belong to a certain Roylan. When he opened the door, he was proved right.
"Hey Keens, what's up?"
Keenser blinked once, then pointed at the room.
"Come in?"
"Oh, uhm, aye. Sure."
Robbie quickly stepped aside and made room for the wee student, then closed the door behind him.
"Waiting for your call?"
At Keenser's question Robbie blushed only the slightest bit.
"A-aye. Leah still has a bit work to do. She said she'd call after dinner."
Keenser nodded understandingly, then moved over to sit down on the free bed.
"Talked."
Robbie blinked in confusion while he moved over to his own bed to sit down. Was that a small smile he could see on his friend's face?
"What? What do ye mean?"
"Talked to Pike," Keenser clarified, but Robbie still wasn't sure what the Roylan was talking about.
"Oh. And... about what?"
Despite it being really small, Keenser's smile seemed to widened the tiniest bit.
"Room problem."
Finally, Robbie had a clue of what they were talking about about and his face cleared up.
"Ah, I see. Aaron wants to change rooms, but mine is the only one available, because I'm alone."
Robbie tried his best not to sound too worried about it. However, he narrowed his eyes in confusion when Keenser shook his head.
"Not alone. New roommate."
"Wha-"
"Me."
At first, Robbie was quite surprised by the words, but a moment later he smiled.
"Ye... will share a room with me? And Aaron will move in with Gary?"
Keenser nodded.
"Better that way."
Yes... yes, it was. But-
"But... ye know that I'm on the phone quite a lot, don't ye?" Robbie sounded almost embarrassed.
However, Keenser just shrugged.
"Headphones."
Robbie couldn't help the laugh escaping him and he quickly moved over and hugged Keenser.
"Thanks, lad."
"No problem."
Only a moment later, they were interrupted by the sound of Robbie's PADD ringing.
"Oh, uhm-"
Keenser just nodded.
"Fine. Go on."
The problem really couldn't have been solved in any better way.

Oh, I love my girlfriend so much. It feels like nicotine everytime we get to have a date together. And what we did on this date, I shall tell you! I showed her Voyager and Ds9 characters and had her nickname them and give first impressions. And now I share her wonderful insights with you lot:
Janeway: Mama Maria, a renowened chef who owns a cooking brand of butter where the bottle is shaped like herself. Became a Star Trek to promote her brand.
Chakotay: Joey-David Hasselhoff, lost his legs in the great star wars as is now very short. Became a Star Trek to pay off his outstanding gambling debts. The marking on his face is a barcode to immediately kill him if he tries to escape.
Kes: Mama Maria's evil twin, not a true Star Trek and just has the visitor's pass. Has the power to return everything to its base components. She is always under attack so she wears an indestructible vest.
Doctor: Uncle Steve, do not trust around children. The blue is a warning and he's very bitter about it. Pretends he's a genius but he's very stupid. He has an ankle bracelet which keeps him from leaving the ship which he bothers everyone about.
Neelix: A criminal mastermind tattoo artist that destroyed his homeworld with a tattoo machine, not a true Star Trek but came along to be amused. Talks like a gangster. I.. don't remember the name she gave him..
Tuvok: Great Value Spock, bought at the store on a discount during a clearance Vulcan sale and they needed a Vulcan to complete their ship. His eyebrows are drawn on.
Paris: Milk toast, the whitest white to ever white. He goes to space church which he himself built and his favourite food is white bread. Just a guy, he has no reason to be here.
Torres: Laquisha, a plant that knows absolutely everything. Does not like Uncle Steve. Goes to space church but because she knows its fake, and the world is actually on a cracker with hummus that will eventually be eaten by the one true space god.
Kim: Mark, a part timer that's just there. He does a bit of everything but he isn't actually good at anything. A temporary Star Trek but eventually he'll quit and follow his dreams to go to space college.
Sisko: Carl, owns a vintage George Foreman grill and makes space hotdogs for everyone on Hotdog Friday. Uses his baldness as a weapon to blind his enemies.
Kira: Karen, a typical Karen who is rude to everyone around her. Complains about being on Ds9 but doesn't do anything about it. Hosts a radio show to sell her trademark cement purses, which she always carries around at all times.
Bashir: Dominic (named by the two of us), participated in the space sex offender shuffle. He is very creepy and no one likes him, don't trust around anyone. No one can stop him. Probably really into bondage.
Odo: Gorp, created by the Kardashians to be a clone but made wrong. Banished for being a failure of a clone. He has no feeling in his left hand and cannot feel pain. His ears are glued on.
Dax: Monica, a furry that believes she is a leopard. Also a sex offender but they forgive her because she's so good at her job. If you see her walking around in a fursuit, let her be. Do not anger her because there will be no escape. Sells pancakes alongside Mama Maria and they are dating.
O'Brien: Loppy, it's his first day! He's so happy to be here, he's having a grand old time. It's always his first day as he is actually a mind parasite that makes everyone believe it is his first day and they will never know how long he's actually been there. Never.
Dukat: Zorath/Zorag (We both forgot it so it changes to something else with a z) -Melty Candle Face, an obsessive yandere Klingon that's very mentally unstable. He was first in love with Dominic until he found he could not be trusted. He targeted Loppy next because its his first day. Currently dating someone else, but it's undetermined who it is.
Garak: From the Shining Jack Nicholson, a scizophrenic who causes problems for everyone. His daily hobby is crawling through the vents and he can show up anywhere at anytime. He is an unpredictable menace that likes to scare the ship.
Mirror Kira: Ds9, the ship itself embodied as a half robot. Abuses her power to sleep with everyone on the station. What happens to the ship happens to her and forces everyone to protect her under the threat of death. She will not hesitate to throw you out of the airlock if you disobey her.

Picard
Tumblr media
When you're Captain Shaw's XO and Raffi's former(?) girlfriend, "very annoying" is a not term used lightly.
This is Season 3 Episode 6, and the first one to feature all seven of the TNG main cast. If you want a machete cut of Star Trek: Picard I would recommend watching a gifset of Picard hugging Q, then start with this episode. I think you'll be a bit confused about who Alton Soong is, but Season 1 didn't try very hard to introduce him either. Besides, if you're a big enough TNG fan to want to check this turkey out, you're probably already used to them tossing out hidden Soongs and secret androids.
Let's see if I can sum this up quickly: Picard (1) gets a distress call from Beverly Crusher (2) so he contacts Will Riker (3) for help. They try to sneak to her location using the USS Titan, but end up in a long, drawn out battle with a bounty hunter ship called the Shrike. After escaping, Ro Laren sacrifices herself to warn Picard of a Changeling plot that involves his and Bev's son, Jack Crusher. She leaves him records of her investigation, which leads them to her field agents, Raffi and Worf (4).
In this episode, Titan attempts to seek answers at the Daystrom Institute, but the security is tighter than they expected so they can't retrieve the away team that they send to the station. So Picard goes to the fleet museum to get help from Geordi LaForge (5). Together they rig up a cloaking device on the Titan, which enables them to beam out most of the away team, including the Daystrom manifest, which is stored inside Data (6) in a new body. We'll come back to that. Riker gets captured by Starfleet security, but then he gets double-captured by the Shrike's Captain Vadic, who reveals she's a Changeling, and also she's holding Deanna Troi (7) captive.
See, this is why I'm writing all this down, because the show is so unbearably tedious that I need to record my understanding of the plot. I learned some time ago that a sure sign of bad storytelling is when you write down what happened in a given episode or chapter and you realize the answer is "not much". I've watched about two or three movies' worth of content from Season 3, but very little has actually happened. Let's put that into perspective. You could watch Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, and the first leg of The Voyage Home in the time it takes you to watch the first six episodes of Season 3. A lot of stuff happens in those three movies. Hell, even that first chunk of Voyage Home has a lot going on in it.
The storyline in this season isn't bad on a conceptual level. It's a bit derivative, since we've seen Changeling infiltration stories before, and crew reunions are a regular thing in this franchise, but it's solid. The problem is how they keep dragging things out with all this stuff that doesn't matter: Captain Shaw, Worf mentoring Raffi, Picard asking Laris if he should go help Beverly or not, 90 percent of the battle with the Shrike, Raffi arguing with her handler, Worf and Raffi arguing with Worf's handler, the scene with Sneed, the scene with Krinn, Jack Crusher's hallucinations, all of the pointless flashbacks. None of it matters, but they threw it in to make this take longer. They threw it in to fool you into thinking these diversions were clues instead of filler.
This is how they kill time in this episode. The gang does to the Daystrom Station to burgle the place, but their magic space key doesn't work. The away team gets in the station and they can move freely, but Titan can't get close enough to extract them when they're done, so they have to leave and come back. That's a waste. If this story were better paced, they would have gotten all their ducks in a row ahead of time. It would still be a suspenseful touch-and-go heist, but it would have taken half the time to tell it.
Instead, they get split up and have to go ask Geordi for help. But he's worried about the bad guys coming after his family, so Picard has to talk him into this. Then his daughters have to talk him into it, and it becomes this weird thing where Geordi was a pilot and an engineer in his youth, and one daughter's an engineer, and the other's a pilot, and for some reason he feels slighted by that? "How could you follow in my footsteps like that? Why couldn't you be like your sister, who followed in my footsteps?"
He comes around in the end, but it takes forever. I see now that this is why all the characters in this show are always mad at Picard all the time. Before I thought the writers were just too lazy to think of a second character dynamic, but now I see it's a stalling tactic. Each character they bring in who has a beef with Picard is another insta-conflict they can introduce and resolve to pad out the piece. It doesn't even have to be rational. Captain Shaw's the one guy who still blames Picard for what Locutus did. Beverly ghosted Picard for the unspeakable crime of being a responsible public servant. Geordi's mad at Picard for getting his daughter into this crisis even though it was Beverly who called him, and I'm pretty sure the bad guys were the ones who started it. Ro was mad at Picard for not being supportive enough of her whole "traitor" phase.
Most of these characters come around, but it's so dumb. The whole reason this show got made was because Picard is such a popular character, but the entire formula of the show is "What if everyone hated Jean-Luc Picard?" Starfleet brass tell him to shut the fuck up. Old friends point guns at him. His son blames him for the genetic brain disorder that killed him. His friends hate him for being too dedicated to his work. The people he helps hate him for not helping them more. His adoring fans won't even let him eat his lunch!
Let's move on, since I'm sure we'll have a chance to come back to "Everyone hates Picard" later. Apparently Jack's whole berserker rage thing comes from him having the same genetic abnormality that gave Picard prophetic visions of Data. Also it killed Picard, so Jack is kind of bitter that he may not live past the age of... [checks notes] ah yes, ninety-four. Jack Crusher sucks. Still he manages to look past his bitterness long enough to get the big idea to steal the cloaking device from the "HMS Bounty" the Klingon ship from Star Trek IV. He and Geordi's kids think they can use it to get the Titan close enough to save the away team.
Geordi has kittens over this, because hooking up a cloaking device to a Federation starship is a treaty violation, but if that were true then why does the Federation still have the Bounty in the first place? Also, it's a 115-year-old cloaking device. How effective can it still be? You'd think 2401 tech would be able to detect that sort of thing. Besides, they have to uncloak anyway to teleport the away team back on board.
Wait, no they don't? That's not how it worked in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. The Bounty was cloaked for most of the movie but they used the transporters multiple times. You know what other ship could operate the transporters while under cloak? The alternate timeline version of La Sirena, from this obscure show from a few years ago. What was it called? Oh right! It was Star Trek: Picard!
I mean, it's a silly thing to nitpick, but the point is they spent most of the episode on a fetch quest for the cloaking device, and then it barely helps at all. They could have just warped away from the Daystrom Institute and then doubled back an hour later and swooped into get their pals in the nick of time. That's basically what they did anyway, but with more hand-wringing from Geordi.
Back to Data. So the big idea here is that the bad guys swiped a portal gun from the Daystrom Institute and used it to destroy a Starfleet building somewhere, but this was only a distraction from the other thing they stole, which must be part of an even bigger plan. So Picard sends Riker, Worf, and Raffi into the station to steal the station's manifest, which will show what that other missing item is. As it turns out, the manifest is contained inside the "AI security system" that protects it, and both of those things are contained inside an android body wired into the station. A hologram of Alton Soong explains that he was planning to transfer his mind into an android body, but decided against it after meeting Picard, so instead he rigged it up to contain the minds of Lore, Lal, B-4, and mostly Data. Then he died before he could finish, and.... Starfleet took it? This doesn't make much sense.
The gang try to turn this new android on, and it gives Brent Spiner a chance to switch personalities like he used to do all the time back in the day. Data's in there, but so are the others, and he can't think straight. Then he projects a hologram from his eyes, which is... weird. I mean, could Data do that before? And I thought Alton said this android was biological like Picard's synth body. Can Picard display holograms with his eyes?
Anyway, Data finally shows the gang what else was stolen from the Daystrom Institute, and it's Picard's corpse. I guess that was also confiscated by Starfleet when Alton Soong died? So Picard's original body is some sort of deadly weapon now. I bet the next episode has a scene where people are mad at Picard for this. "How dare you! That dead body of yours is going to kill all our loved ones, and it's all your fault!"
Fuck this show.

Before I actually saw Star Trek: Generations I was really expecting it to lean into the lotus eater machine horror of the Nexus more and I was disappointed that it didn't. So with that, as well as spirk, in mind I came up with a loose concept:
Kirk and Picard both enter the Nexus the way they do in the film.
The Nexus needs to feed on energy, therefore it needs to keep people inside it. It will convince them to stay with disorientation and deception. It's so successful that most people don't fight.
Picard is hanging out with his fictional wife and children when Kirk busts in, and is shocked to realize Picard is a real person.
He realizes Picard has just entered, and asks him when. Kirk has been keeping track of time since he entered, which is difficult to do in the Nexus, and make a minor correction based on Picard's information. Kirk has been aware of the last eighty or so years, but has not physically aged.
Picard is shocked Kirk has been here for so long and asks what he's been doing. Kirk replies he's been trying to escape. Picard, still somewhat under its sway, wonders why, and Kirk explains there is nothing in the Nexus as good as what he has outside. The Nexus can conjure people like Picard's family from fantasy, but cannot truly recreate real people, which is why it did not reunite Picard with his deceased brother and nephew.
They agree to escape together, but Kirk is adamant about attempting to return at the time he first entered, which he believes is possible due to the effect of the Nexus on time.
At some point they encounter the remnant of Guinan, drawn from both Picard's memories and the memory of the Nexus itself. Through her, they learn that the Nexus once had a mutualistic symbiotic relationship with a species who able to enjoy it without being overwhelmed and chose to live within it and feed the Nexus on their energy. At some point, these people died off, and since then the Nexus has become desperate. It trapped Guinan's people for a time, but they eventually noticed the difference between each other and the fantasies provided by the Nexus, and wanted to leave. Except for Soren, who wanted to stay, but the others were convinced he was just brainwashed and took him with them. The Nexus tried to keep Kirk and Picard separate to prevent another escape. Soren has been trying to return to the Nexus by any means necessary.
Picard needs help stopping Soren, which means Kirk will have to go with him and remain in the future. Kirk is saddened, but knows it's their only chance and agrees.
Kirk is near-fatally injured during the final confrontation, not by the bridge falling but by Soren shooting him in the back as in the original ending. At this point he could just die and it would be more of an alternative movie, but I prefer to go in the spirk fic direction.
Kirk awakens in sickbay a few days after the incident. Spock is there. Kirk is delighted to see him again, but expresses regret at the time they lost. Spock explains that there are no signs of physical aging from his time in the Nexus, and Kirk can be expected to live the rest of a human lifespan based on his age when he entered. He then reminds him that Vulcan lifespans are much longer, so they can get their lost time back.
Kirk and Spock join hands like in the TMP sickbay scene but in reverse.
