Además de que se ha convertido en una de mis películas favoritas, pues mezcla de manera perfecta el elemento fantástico, con las reflexiones existenciales, me descubrió a Yasmine Hamdan. Este tema contiene el exotismo y la sensualidad que sólo una ciudad árabe a orillas del Mediterráneo y el Atlántico puede desplegar: Tánger. Ensoñación en estado puro.

Government-sponsored matchmaking

I recently came across a documentary on Iran's wedding culture and I learned quite a few interesting things from it. Tebyan Cultural Institute whose goal is to introduce rich Islamic culture and promote Islamic viewpoints through information technology. One of the roles they have taken over is matchmaking in Iran. They also released a matchmaking app called "Hamdam" that aims to find religiously pious, right partners for its users for sustainable marriage. Iran reported 170,000 divorces in 2019 alone. Increasing divorce rates are one of Iran's major problems according to Komeil Khojasteh, head of the Tebyan Cultural Institute. The picture you see above shows some of the official matchmakers of Iran's government. In the documentary, these matchmakers complained that customers are getting more selective, and considering the harsh economic conditions in Iran, it is getting harder and harder to satisfy the customers and find partners that they like. This is very interesting and different. I wouldn't expect the government to jump in and solve the love problem but that is something unique that is being done in Iran, certainly something I have never seen before. But we must ask how did we even get here? Why does a government need to jump in as a matchmaker for people? It seems like society and Iran's conservative government have made finding partners so hard that people are not marrying at a sustainable rate. We must also wonder if government-sponsored matchmaking is really healthy for society? Marriage and finding love is a very private matter and no one would like government officials jumping into their private marriage life. Let's see how this new approach by Iran's government goes with the people.
