Orodreth’s  sons
According to the drafts, Orodreth had two more sons: the younger Orodlin and the elder either Halmir or Haldir (they are mentioned in different, but I conclude that they are the same character). This is a collection of headcanons that I have appeared in the last three days.
I think that when Orodreth had three children, he and his wife went crazy, because Finduilas is a typical Third house in appearance and disposition and most of all looks like uncle Finrod, Halmir is more and more drawn to Noldo and his mother from Sindar, and Orodlin is the most calm and soft, something from the Arafinve and Artaresto breed.
Halmir could be a potential heir and warlord, and Orodlin was an adviser. headcanon: what the youngest was able to survive, because there is zero information about him except for his name.
Halmir bonked Orodlin with a shovel - hysterics for half an hour and from both sides. because the drama queen is a family thing for Finwions. Halmir looks like his dad, everyone thought he would grow up the same, but by the age of 20 he had already overtaken his father by half a head and shoulders too. And Orod the dark-haired sun went to his mother, thin as a pine tree. Halmir was fighting with the feanorings, he had heard enough from Uncle Angarato that the First House should be driven with a filthy broom. Halmir almost left with Finrod, he had a big fight with his father. Orodlin then went to reconcile them. Halmir literally I don't respect Beren! Feanorians, and fuck you clap, I don't respect you either! they are like the sound from the Russian tiktok I'm a darling, I'm an angel, that's what everyone calls me - Orodlin Rails, sleepers, bricks, a stream of urine is flying at you - Finduilas I killed 18 people quickly and without regret - Halmir ✨if something happens to my father, then you will be responsible for it✨ Orodlin the snake he has rings with poisons. oh my God Finduilas was pulling apart the little Haldir and Orodlin by their ears.
She wanted to go for a walk with Gwindor, and mom and dad say: well, take the little ones with you fuck if Halmir died here in these 5-8 years that the feanorings lived in Nargothrond, then they could put pressure on Orodreth with this and because of this he was silent when Beren came and Celegorm and Curufin were the first to find Halmir's body when they went hunting ☠️

Doing Silmarillion Daily has made me notice more about the Edain, and wow, some of the lesser-noticed characters had incredibly hard lives once you put the pieces together.
Take Galdor and Hareth, the father and mother of Húrin and Huor. They get married in Brethil (Hareth’s home), in a big double wedding (Galdor’s older sister and Hareth’s older brother also marry each other), at an incredibly young age - they’re nineteen and sixteen respectively, though they don’t have kids until they’re in their twenties. Hareth has to move to Hithlum, away from all of her family, while she’s still a teenager. When her kids are still fairly young, she has to send them off to Brethil to be fostered by their uncle according to Haladin custom, so she’s separated from her kids as well as parents and other relatives.
Then, while the boys are in Brethil, the Battle of Sudden Flame happens. The times of relative safety are over. Galdor’s father and his younger brother are both killed. Only a couple years later, they learn that their sons (teenagers, 16 and 13) fought in a battle against orcs and are missing, presumed dead.
A year later their sons return under mysterious circumstances and will say nothing about where they’ve been.
And only three years after that, Galdor is killed in defence of Eithel Sirion, the same place his father and brother died defending, and his son Húrin - only 21 years old - leads the counterattack.
Hareth has now lost her husband, father-in-law, brother-in-law, and spent a year thinking her kids were dead or worse, in addition to having been separated from all the rest of her family since her mid-teens - and her son, barely out of his teens, is now fighting in the same war that took everyone else from her and is called the head of the House of Hador.
And then, nine years later when she’s 51 years old, her father Halmir dies in Brethil, and a year after that comes the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and the occupation of Hithlum, and one of her sons is missing-presumed-dead for the second time in her life and her other son is dead. And after that all the tragedies of Húrin’s family.
Just…ouch that is a lot!

WIP Re-Intro: Enna's Prequel
Title: Enna's Prequel (temporary title, subject to change)
Genre: high fantasy
Status: draft 1
Pov: third person dual POV
Setting: Halmond, a small-ish country in the world of Aqurah. The majority of the action takes place in its capital, the city of Halmire.
Universal TW/CW: Murder, complicated family relationships, necromancy, people murdering their own relatives, kidnapping, crime, swearing
Plot/Synopsis: When she was 20, Enna Helder-Kromlin ran away from Halmire, accused of murdering her own brother. Fourteen years later they've returned, at the request of their twin sister, Anne. But when he gets to the city Anne is missing, and has been for nearly a year. Enna must work together with Effie and Bezeo, two new friends Anne had made in their absence, to get to the bottom of just what the hell is going on--not only now, but also what was happening 14 years ago, and who actually killed her brother.
Notes: this is the prequel to Frost & Fire & is set 10-20 years before that story
Tags: #wip: ennas prequel, #c: [first name] + [last name if applicable]
Main Characters:
Enna Helder-Kromlin, any/all pronouns, ~34, half elf. The first of our two narrators, Enna is a thief, mostly, and sometimes a baker. A few weeks ago, Enna got a letter from her twin, Anne, dated almost a year ago, asking him to please come to Halmire because she needs to talk to them.
Anne Helder-Kromlin, she/her, ~34, half elf. Our other narrator, Anne is a thief, and the de facto leader of the second of two factions in Halmond's thevies guild--Oleski. A year ago, she left the city for her own safety, and was supposed to confirm her location within two months, but hasn't made any contact.
Effie Fisarnos, she/they, 64 (~33 in human years), mostly a gnome. Effie is an alchemist, who owns the potion shop The Broken Cauldron, which sometimes acts as a safehouse for the thieves guild. She is also Anne's partner/fiancee, but that isn't public knowledge, and not even Enna knows it. Anne promised to send her a letter no more than two months after she left, but Effie never got one.
Bezeo [last name], he/him, 68 (~36-38 in human years), dwarf. Bezeo is the owner of a traveling food cart that roams around the city. He also invented pizza, and works for the thieves guild Anne is in.
Zephyr Helder-Kromlin, he/they, deceased (died at age 24), half elf. Zephyr was the older brother of Anne and Enna, and fourteen years ago he was murdered. At the time, he was the leader of Oleski, the thevies guild. Enna (though innocent) was blamed for the murder, but she managed to get away. The actual culprit was never found.

Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 1
Hareth vs Belen
[entertainingly, if you swap two letters around you get Haleth vs Beren - but these blorbos are rather more obscure than that...]
Hareth:
The daughter of Halmir, the Chieftain of the Haladin. She married Galdor and is the mother of Húrin and Huor.
I created her entire personality and I love her
Belen:
Younger son of Bëor the Old. An ancestor of Beren.
Bëor passed all his wisdom down to the 2nd son. So he's the imaginative, brainy one who would also be fascinated by the random Elf who showed up and probably lived in Nargothrond for a bit if Bëor had a chance to teach him all his wisdom and lore, since Belen was only 18 when Bëor peaced out for Nargothrond.

Haleth of the Haladin
Women of the Elves, 5/?
[Written for @finweanladiesweek, Day 5 (Ladies who married in)]
...
Haleth of the Haladin was the second child and eldest daughter of Chief Haldad. When the Haladin’s dwellings were attacked by orcs and both her twin brother and father were slain, Haleth led the remaining defiance of her people for seven days as the orcs laid siege to the encampment. She and her people survived only by the abrupt arrival of Caranthir, Elf-lord of Thargelion, with elven reinforcements.
Impressed with Haleth’s bravery and sharp tongue, Caranthir offered her land and protection; Haleth, proud and unbending, refused to swear him fealty. But she did make use of the food he offered and ensured his supplies reached her healers. When he offered her lovely silver ribbons that could disguise the ugly scar crossing Haleth’s throat—a wound she suffered by the orcs that had killed her father and brother—Haleth instead braided them into her hair, and announced her pride in her own beauty before both their people in a speech so fiery Caranthir later described it as akin to his father, the famed elf-king Feanor.
She and her people stayed in Thargelion for a year after that, making use of the time to recover from the wounds and learn more of the lords that lived further west. During that time, the initial discomfort and dislike that festered between Haleth and Caranthir faded, replaced first by a mutual regard for each other’s leadership, then a tender affection, and finally a deep and abiding love.
But Haleth refused to let another lead her people; she was of the line of Haldad, and had won great renown among her people for her defiance of the orcs. They had asked Haleth to lead them, and so she would until she could not any longer. She would not abandon her duty. Caranthir railed at her implacable nature—they fought, long and hard, until finally Haleth commanded him to leave her and her people, and led them all away to first Finrod’s lands near Nargothrond, then Thingol’s lands in the Forest of Brethil.
Eventually, Caranthir came to her and begged forgiveness. Haleth, who had never thought to see him again, wedded him that night in the way of his people—she bore twins that spring, and named them Hileth and Hilin, after the holly trees they were conceived beneath. Caranthir was never named their father.
Haleth died in peace, embraced by the nephew she raised herself, the twin daughters she loved so dearly, and the husband she had never named. The Haladin raised a monument to her after her death under her daughter's direction they called the Haudh-en-Arwen, and planted flowers that shone silver under the moonlight. The flowers were the same color as the ribbons that Caranthir had once gifted to her, and the crown she had fashioned of them.
After the death of Haleth’s nephew Haldan, who became chief after her, Haleth’s daughter, Hileth, became chief of the Haladin; her daughter Helcith wedded Halmir, Haldan’s son, and led the Haladin with her husband during the Dagor Bragollach. Haleth’s second daughter, Hilin, led the defence of the Haladin after Sirion fell. Through their valor, the Haladin survived many of the cruelest events of the latter First Age.

ok. LONG POST UNDER THE CUT. i have endeavored to create a list of Every Named Character In The Quenta Silmarillion. PLEASE tell me if you think i’m missing someone, that’s why i’m posting it.
included characters: Eru, Valar, Maiar, creatures that I think are probably Maiar (like Oromë’s horse), Elves, Men, Peredhil, Dwarves, Dragons and other Creatures of Morgoth with Personal Names (given that Glaurung seems sentient, and it felt wrong to include Huan but not Carcharoth, for example)
excluded characters: anyone not in the text of the Quenta Silmarillion proper (eg Andreth), anyone referred to only by a title (eg the Lord of Nogrod), any creature of Morgoth referred to only by its type (eg the werewolf that Finrod fought)
sorted mostly by order of appearance in text, with the caveat that most humans are listed in their own section and sorted by houses because that makes it easier to keep track of them

Oc is trapped in Lothlorien and growing closer to the center of the forest ring and now surrounded by guards using their disguising cloaks to hide from them. Led by Haldir the group while oc sleeps checks their sack for an astounding broken blade for a weapon and a bow without any arrows showing they are little threat but without any proof of what they are doing here. So they keep monitoring them and trying to divert them at any cost from stumbling across the inner realm. Tossed rocks, animal sounds, nothing could deter the straight shot right for the center.
Though after waiting out a rather nasty storm the path of tracks they once had been following was washed away and they are notably irritated in a try to find that path again.
Haldir, the closest as they turn to head back again irritatingly towards the city dropped to a ball covering himself with his cloak to be a large rock.
Oc, who knows these same ‘rocks’ have been there every time they get turned around huffs and walks to the rock saying, “Fine then. White Witch wants to make me lost by sending her enchanted rocks after me fine. They can come and kill me themselves.” And you onto Haldir’s back oc hops crossing their arms and legs to begin the most awkward stalemate between a guard and a visitor within the past century.
.
Nodding off oc missed the drop of Orophin and Rumil who came to fetch their brother to trade their shifts heading from the other guards what was going on. “Pardon me,” was said and a finger tapped oc’s knee snapping their eyes open.
“Are you the Witch?”
“No,” Rumil answered flatly.
“Then I’m not moving. Two days I’ve been turned around by these fake enchanted rocks the Witch sent after me without so much as a get off my land and she is just going to have to come and shove me off herself.”
“That is no rock,” Orophin said.
“Obviously, it’s breathing and gives glimpses of blonde hair every now and again. But the rude rock has yet to tell me it’s name.”
After a soft sigh Haldir says making his brothers fight to not smirk, “I am Haldir, Son of Halmir, young maiden.”
“Oh don’t you go trying to be all prim and proper thinking I’ll let you up after you and your fake rock buddies followed me for two days, and went through my stuff, without so much as a cough or sniffle to guide me on the right path if your witch wanted me gone. I’m not moving and if I miss Lord Celeborn’s birthday it’s on your heads for why he didn’t get his gift in time from Rivendell.”
Orophin asked, “You are a messenger from Rivendell?”
“Well they didn’t exactly assign me a special hat to wear for the task.”
Haldir in a smooth motion sprung up making oc squeak as they were in the air then suddenly being held in the arms of their mysterious shadow of a guard who said with a hint of a grin on his leaf and dirt splattered face. “Then please do accept our apologies and we shall escort you into Lothlorien to the Lord of our realm.” And without putting them down the guards made their way back to the inner realm.
Across from the stoic Elf Lord oc rummaged through their bag they had been using as a pillow that was unable to be searched to produce a silk wrapped gift. Once opened revealed a gift from young Estel that had a smile ease across the Lord’s face of a lopsided tapestry the size of his torso that had encased a trio of clay molded and bronzed figurines the young boy had made for his adopted grandfather who issued the messenger be fed and shown to a guest quarters within the treetops to rest and recuperate until a response could be made up to standard for the doting grandfather for the young boy so far away.
Across the table of the public dining hall the changed messenger looked up from their now torn roll they readied to dunk into their much needed warm stew to complete their hopes of a bath, meal then warm bed to sleep their travels off to find a now leaf and dirt free trio of blonde shadows who intended fully to make amends and form a friendship for their commissioned seat of an elder brother to build upon with said guest who would be leaving soon.

until someone gives me another reason i will remain convinced that jirt was just fucking with us by giving so many characters extremely similar names to their relatives. handir son of haldir son of halmir my ass. fuck dyslexic people in particular.
either that or he never once considered the (in middle earth) nigh-ubiquitous situation where someone calls someone else's name from across the house and eleven people from three to six different generations come arunning. this problem would only compound with longer lived peoples like dwarves and dunedain let alone elves. youd think someone would have gotten annoyed and changed up the naming conventions for the sake of their sanity.

Arahaelon of Anorien

by what_katy_did_1234
Arahaelon of Anorien, second son of Halmir of Anorien, is dismayed when his father is determined to set him up with Finduilas of Emyn Arnen, the Steward of Gondor’s eldest daughter. There are reasons why this is not a good idea, but he doesn’t particularly want to discuss them with his father. However, when he falls in love with someone entirely unsuitable, he finds that Finduilas is much better company than he thought.

Memeage...at last
Manuscript word search meme. Tagged by @cairistiona7
Words:  smoke, rain, oak, shiver, neck
(and I totally could have done it with ‘your’ words, @cairistiona7. The word ‘cozy’ does in fact occur in my fics LOL. Okay, it’s spelled UK and refers to a tea cosy, but it still counts)
And just because I’m feeling special, all the words are from the same fic, Unto the ending of the world (here at AO3 - heads up: it’s AU, and it’s mostly rather dark) ...
smoke: Ch. 7 Retreat: Briefly going up to the top of the wall, Denethor found that the Second Circle was a confusion of fire and smoke, with the dark silhouettes of the Enemy's forces moving about between the burning houses. Beyond thick screens of smoke nothing could be seen of the First Circle and the outer wall.
rain: Ch. 8 Escape: At least there was enough firewood lying around, Elrohir saw, though he doubted it would burn in this rain. He resigned himself to a cold and wet night, though it did appear that not all were so inclined. He watched as Halmir attempted to coax a fire from some of the less damp wood he had collected.
oak: Ch. 20 Captain: They crossed the village's main square towards the road that led to the Pony. Halbarad glanced at the great oak tree that stood there, then looked closer. Was that... ? Yes, there were two bodies dangling from one of its branches.
shiver: Ch. 21 Ashes: "No, indeed, nor can it be, for Mandos' heart will not soften a second time, and my Beren will not be returned to me." She took a deep breath and took his hands in hers. A shiver ran down Elrond's back as he looked at her face. "Fear not, Father, I will not leave without bidding thee farewell."
neck: Ch. 29 Feast: As Éowyn and Elfhelm stepped forward, Erkenbrand wondered what they would find. For his own wedding, everything had appeared undisturbed; it had not been until he and Leofgyth undressed and got into bed that they found that the mattress had been covered with stinging nettles. He glanced at the hobbit who was craning his neck in anticipation, then quickly looked back to see for himself as the door opened.
Anyone who wants to do the meme: do or do not, there are no tags
The new words are: music, water, glass, speed, shoe.

Looking at The Silmarillion Daily entries for Dagor Bragollach, it’s really standing out to me how crucial Men and Sindar are to the battle. Among other things not for them, Hithlum would have been lost in the Bragollach, not the Nirnaeth.
The hosts of Hithlum were driven back with great loss to the fortresses of Ered Weithrin, and these they hardly defended against the Orcs. Before the walls of Eithel Sirion fell Hador the Golden-Haired, defending the rearguard of his lord Fingolfin, being then sixty and six years of age, and with him fell Gundor his younger son, pierced with many arrows.
The House of Hador are probably the crucial factor in preventing Hithlum from falling in the initual assault. Then, seven years later, we get this:
When seven years had passed since the Fourth Battle, Morgoth renewed his assault, and he sent a great force against Hithlum. The attack on the passages of the Shadowy Mountains was bitter, and in the siege of Eithel Sirion Galdor the tall, Lord of Dor-lómin, was slain by an arrow. That fortress he held on behalf of Fingon, the High King; and in that same place his father Hador Lórindol died but a little time before. Húrin his son was then newly come to manhood, but he was great in strength both of mind and body; and he drove the Orcs with heavy slaughter from Ered Wethrin, and pursued them far across the sands of Anfauglith. But King Fingon was hard put to it to hold back the army of Angband that came down from the north; and battle was joined upon the very plains of Hithlum. There Fingon was outnumbered; but the ships of Círdan sailed in great strength up the Firth of Drengist, and in the hour of need the Elves of the Falas came upon the host of Morgoth from the west. Then the Orcs broke and fled, and the Eldar had the victory, and their horsed archers pursued them even into the Iron Mountains.
Hador and both of his sons have now all died defending the same place, Eithel Sirion, the main pass over the mountains into Hithlum, and his grandson Húrin, who’s only 21, makes the key difference in pushing the orcs back.
At the same time, Fingon’s army within Hithlum is rescued by Círdan and the Falmari, and would probably have lost if it wasn’t for them.
Further south, the House of Haleth and Doriath also play a key role in defending southwestern Beleriand:
Amid the tale of defeats of that time the deeds of the Haladin are remembered with honour: for after the taking of Minas Tirith the Orcs came through the western pass, and maybe would have ravaged even to the mouths of Sirion; but Halmir lord of the Haladin sent swift word to Thingol, for he had friendship with the Elves that guarded the borders of Doriath. Then Beleg Strongbow, chief of the marchwardens of Thingol, brought great strength of the Sindar armed with axes into Brethil; and issuing from the deeps of the forest Halmir and Beleg took an Orc-legion at unawares and destroyed it. Thereafter the black tide out of the North was stemmed in that region, and the Orcs dared not cross the Teiglin for many years after.
Now, the Teiglin runs from the southern slopes of the mountains south of Hithlum to the River Sirion. So this is absolutely crucial: it’s the difference between the capture of Tol Sirion giving Orcs access to a small sliver of land between Brethil and Teiglin versus them having access to all of West Beleriand including the land around Nargothrond.
The we have the House of Bëor, who both rescue Finrod from being captured or killed and subsequently fight a long, grinding guerilla war with Morgoth over Dorthonion, even after they’re down to thirteen people, and after that when it’s down to Beren alone. With all of the other instances of alliances between Elves and Men being absolutely crucual to the battle, it really stands out that Nargothrond doesn’t send forces to assist the House of Bëor in Dorthonion (maybe because they’re not aware thatthey’re still there and fighting, maybe because there’s no simple route into the highlands of Dorthonion), and I personally headcanon that guilt over this is part of why Finrod feels so strongly about his oath to Barahir when Beren shows up.
So as a short rundown, without humans and the Sindar, the Bragollach would have resulted in:
The capture of Hithlum by Morgoth
The capture of most of West Beleriand by Morgoth
The capture or death of Finrod
While the brunt of the Dagor Bragollach and its aftermath falls on the north-central region - Dorthonion and the Finarfinians and House of Bëor there - it’s notable how much worse it goes in East Beleriand with the Sons of Fëanor than in West Beleriand, and it seems like part of that is the Fëanoreans not having as many allies.
Also, the relationship between Círdan and the Fingolfinians is underrated. He rescues Fingon in the battle described above; the Silver Gate of Gondolin is decorated with pearls from Balar, which must be gifts of Círdan and the Falathrim; and Turgon sends people to Círdan when he tries to send ships across the sea to Valinor.

Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 2
Corunir vs Hareth
Corunir:
Ranger of the North; part of Golodir's company. Waited for his trapped friends for years (Lord of the Rings Online character)
he's a ranger of the north who followed his captain to angmar despite aragorn very specifically telling them 'hey, angmar's super dangerous, Do Not'. most of his friends got stuck and/or killed by some haunted statues, and he kept trying to cross the statues to go help them (failed many times til they almost killed him) and just waited for them on the other side for years before he managed to get a message back to the rest of the rangers. love his friends So Much and will not stop following them into stupid dangerous situations
Canonically the ranger who would give the best hugs
he's loyal to a fault, staying behind (alone) in the dread-realm of Angmar just desperately hoping for word from his captain. He couldn't make it further east to where Golodir was because of a valley of powerful watching stones that killed like half of their company when they passed through them the first time. Corunir was trapped on the west side while the survivors made it east, but kept trying to pass them for years and years "until my very spirit was broken within me" as he puts it. like. dude. this poor guy! he kept throwing himself at the valley of death-statues for years and he somehow survived. he was broken by it but he did it out of that stubborn loyalty, because "I could not abandon my captain" :( he just wants his friends to be ok!!! I'm literally so normal about him. also he's somewhere on the aroace spectrum. this is canon probably dude just trust me. we love an aroace-spec king
Hareth:
The daughter of Halmir, the Chieftain of the Haladin. She married Galdor and is the mother of Húrin and Huor.
I created her entire personality and I love her

three houses of the edain ➴ house of haleth ➴ headcanon disclaimer
Halmir was the son of Haldan, and the fourth Chieftain of the Haladin. He wed the wise-woman Fendis, named for her unusual pale appearance and held as holy and mystical by her people. Fendis bore Halmir four children: two sons, Haldir and Hundar, and two daughters, Hareth and Hiril. Halmir encouraged his children to foster friendships with the heirs of the House of Hador, eventually leading to a great feast celebrating the union of the two Houses when Haldir and Hareth each wed children of Lord Hador. Hundar also wed outside of his House, though he met his wife while on a diplomatic visit to Ladros; alone of her siblings, Hiril married a man of the Haladin.           While the Battle of Sudden Flame did not directly affect the Haladin, Haldir was Chieftain when the House of Bëor was scattered and a portion of them fled to Brethil. He welcomed Emeldir the Man-hearted and the refugees she led out of Ladros, including the family of Astoriel, the Bëorian wife of his second son Hundar. At this time, he also fostered his young grandsons Húrin and Huor, children of Hareth and Galdor, and was deeply grieved when they disappeared amid a skirmish with orcs. For a year he held himself accountable for their loss, and was relieved and overjoyed when they miraculously returned to their homeland of Dor-lómin.           In the wake of the Dagor Bragollach, orcs began to roam unhindered across the lands of West Beleriand, and Halmir called on King Thingol of Doriath for aid. Thingol sent many stout marchwardens under the command of Beleg Cúthalion, and together the Sindar and the Haladin destroyed a legion of invading orcs, giving the southern lands a respite from the defeats of the north.           Halmir continued to fight against the Enemy for the rest of his reign, joining the Union of Maedhros and bringing his people into the wider sphere of Beleriandic politics, but he would pass away before the next great battle of the First Age, leaving his eldest son Haldir to lead the Haladin.
