No era amor.
Lo que sentía por Hanji no era amor.
Que pudiera escucharla hablando largo y tendido sobre nada en particular no era indicio de ello. Tampoco aquel extraño cosquilleo que le anudaba el estómago cada vez que lo tocaba inocente, casi jugando. Era tonto que sus pasos lo llevaran siempre en su dirección, o que sus ojos terminaran siempre buscando encontrarse cómplices con los de ella. El miedo que le obstruía el pecho ante la sola idea de perderla le parecía incluso ridículo, irracional, también.
Porque lo que sentía por Hanji no era amor. O al menos, de eso había querido convencerse. Con sus labios fundiéndose en los de ella. Con sus lenguas deslizándose la una por sobre la otra. Con la tibieza de sus respiraciones agitadas entremezclándose en la desesperación de cada beso. No era amor.
Quizás había sido el estúpido juego del que Mike los había obligado a participar. Quizás había sido que, con un par de copas encima, ninguno de los dos había pensado con claridad. Quizás, con la cabeza liviana y dándoles vueltas, terminar el uno encima del otro no les había resultado tan descabellado después de todo.
-Levi, para. - la oyó jadear contra su boca. Estaban en la cocina del cuartel, escondidos en lo envolvente de la penumbra. Hanji estaba sentada sobre la mesada de granito, despeinada y con las mejillas apenas teñidas de rosado. - ¿Y si alguien entra y nos ve?
Él la observó fijamente; el gris de sus iris resplandecía intenso bajo la luz amarillenta del candil, hablando sin hablar. Erwin, Moblit, Mike, Nanaba, ya todos lo sabían. La inexplicable cantidad de tiempo que pasaban juntos o la forma tan peculiar en la que se miraban habían sido prueba suficiente. Los roces casuales en los pasillos y cómo se entendían sin la necesidad de palabras, causa infame de rumores.
Tal vez, hasta entonces, ignorarlos había sido la mejor de las opciones. Tal vez, jugar a ser mejores amigos era más fácil. Tal vez, así, hubiese podido deshacerse del hormigueo en la panza con el correr de los días. De los años. Por arte de magia. Porque no amaba a Hanji. No podía amarla. El amor era un lujo que soldados como ellos no podían permitirse.
-No importa. - murmuró, plantando un beso fugaz en la comisura de sus labios, luego otro encima de ellos. Hanji sabía a vino, y a dulce, y a primavera, y juraba que no le molestaba empalagarse de ella. Porque no sentía amor. Ni un poquito. O al menos, de eso todavía quería convencerse. Con todas sus fuerzas.
-Levi…- la escuchó exhalar de nuevo, casi sin aliento. Su voz era una súplica entrecortada en medio del silencio, una confesión tácita de lo que ninguno se animaba a pronunciar. Sus manos se perdían entre los finos mechones de su pelo oscuro, y las de él casi se hundían demandantes en sus caderas, atrayéndola más y más contra el calor de su cuerpo. – Vamos a mi habitación…
Él asintió, rendido, pegando su frente a la de ella. Su corazón latía tan desenfrenado que temía que fuera a explotársele justo allí, sin previo aviso. Jugar a ser mejores amigos ya no alcanzaba. Nunca había alcanzado. Ya no podían seguir mintiéndose tan descaradamente a sí mismos.
Porque el amor tenía un precio demasiado alto para soldados como ellos. Sin embargo, allí, borrachos, en aquella cocina sucia y maloliente, Levi tenía la leve impresión de que podía rozarlo con la punta de los dedos. Aunque fuera efímero, aunque fuera sólo por un mísero instante.
-Vamos. – concluyó, sin tapujos. Hanji enredó las piernas alrededor de su torso mientras él la levantaba y cargaba firme entre sus brazos.
Quizás se arrepintiera en cuanto los mezquinos rayos de sol develaran irrevocables sus secretos, impidiéndole escapar de ellos. Quizás, se arrepintiera en cuanto tuviera que enfrentarse cara a cara con la única verdad de la que ya no podía ocultarse. Quizás, se arrepintiera en cuanto todo aquello que nunca podría llegar a ser quedara expuesto a la luz de un nuevo día.
Porque Hanji y él ya no eran mejores amigos. ¿Qué clase de amigos se besan a oscuras? ¿Qué clase de amigos piensan en hacerse el amor, ebrios, una madrugada? Hanji y él no eran mejores amigos. Se atrevía a decir que nunca habían querido serlo.
Porque lo que sentía por Hanji no era amor. Ni de cerca. Ahora, con su boca buscando nuevamente la suya lo comprendía.
Lo que sentía por ella iba incluso mucho más allá de eso.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, appeared in Christchurch District Court charged with murder on Saturday, after he allegedly stormed a mosque in Christchurch, opening fire with a semi-automatic shotgun and a rifle on about 100 people attending Friday prayers.
Authorities have confirmed 49 people were killed in the massacre and at least 40 were injured.
Haji Daoud Nabi, 71, Naeem Rashid and his 21-year-old son Talha, have been confirmed dead by heartbroken family and friends.

Mr Nabi, a father-of-five and retired engineer, moved to New Zealand from Afghanistan in 1977 and set up a new life as one of the 'first Muslims in New Zealand'.
Two of his sons Omar Nabi, 43, and Yama Nabi, 45, appeared outside Christchurch District Court on Saturday morning where they shared photos of their father.
Naeem Rashid, from Abbottabad in Pakistan, was hailed a hero after he tried to wrestle the gun from the Christchurch shooter on Friday.
He was badly wounded after he launched himself at the shooter in a bid to protect fellow worshippers.
He was rushed to hospital following the attack, but later died.

In a tragic twist, Mr Rashid's 21-year-old son, Talha, also lost his life during the mass shooting.
Dr Khursheed confirmed to ARY News that his brother Mr Rashid and nephew Talha had been killed in the terrifying attack.  
A Facebook appeal was issued for missing man Lilik Abdul Hamid but it has since been confirmed he did not survive.
'A friend of one struggle... has passed away in New Zealand... the victim of NZ animal terrorist,' a relative wrote on Facebook.
'All Muslims are grieving and pray for you.'
Born in Indonesia, Mr Abdul Hamid was a practicing Muslim who lived in Christchurch.

'We went to school together,' his friend Abdul Qayyum told Daily Mail Australia, before weeping.
