So I went to my gyno visit today at the Indian Clinic. I have been having issues hemorrhaging during my periods, off & on since 2013 (23yrs old, now 33). I already have children & my tubes are tied. I want a hysterectomy. My gyno is refusing.
Some Backstory:
A male gyno specialist (2013) refused hysterectomy & kept saying, "Tubals can be reversed. You might want more children. Hysterectomies are permanent."
I have three children & due to a hereditary disorder anesthesia increases my chances of seizures. I almost DIED during my last child's birth, C-section including tubal **AND** sedated.
When I told him I was firm on not having anymore biological children because of that. He kept pushing for 'uterine/endometrial ablation'. Which is where they burn off your uterine lining to pause your periods or can do it enough where you don't have another period. I told him no & sought a second opinion.
My second opinion was a female gyno who tested my hormone levels, ultrasounds, MRI &EKGs even to rule out pregnancy &/or hormone imbalance. Everything came back fine. Yet I was still hemorrhaging.
Female gyno insinuated I was either exaggerating or lying about the bleeding. So I saved a day's worth of saturated feminine products & brought them to her. She was grossed out, but realized I was telling the truth.
Female gyno placed me on Seasonique. A birth control pill which gives you four periods a year, to see if it would help regulate the bleeding. It did for almost a year, by then 2014. But it started giving me intense depression & irrational thoughts.
Female gyno told me to stop taking it & wait a month before trying something else.
During that time my right arm not my left would tingle off & on. I would get woozy & nauseous. Cold sweats & feel clammy. One night all of those symptoms descended upon me except with the addition of my heart racing. Not hurting just racing. & my body was screaming something wasn't right. It's one of the few times I can consciously say I knew I could be dying. It was scary.
I went to the ER & after testing I was having a cardiac event from a blood clot forcing itself through my heart. My white blood cell count was almost FOUR TIMES the amount a person usually has during a heart attack.
I was in the hospital for a little over a week, angiogram & making sure another blood clot didn't develop. They believe the Seasonique was the cause.
Since then I've just been suffering with the sporadic hemorrhaging since then. Which is now including debilitating & excruciating pain.
Which is why I went to the gyno today, different from the previous two. Only to be told that she wasn't going to give me an updated hormone screening, ultrasound, MRI, etc. She offered me ablation or birth control.
I told her I don't see the point in ablation. It has so many horrendous possible side effects, including hemorrhaging! Plus, she would want to do the type of ablation where it rids you of a period. But a hysterectomy does the same fucking thing.
& I'm not taking birth control. Not gonna to risk either exacerbating my depression or another heart attack.
She was trying to say: But you'll need hormones after a hysterectomy!
Me: & birth control isn't hormones?!
& that I want a second opinion on the hysterectomy. I am 33, my mind has been made up since I was 23, I have kids, I have a tubal & I'm basically praying for menopause the past five years. So I don't have to keep dealing with this bullshit.
She put in a referral for the second opinion & didn't bother to talk to me about pain management. She was too busy feeling butthurt that I know what I want & need & she couldn't give me a good enough reason why aside from, "Because!"
Sidenote: When I get my hysterectomy & I will. I want a shirt made that says:
"Ask me why I'm no longer hysterical, I'm just hilarious now."

I am an author and dumpster fire of a tumblr shitposter and I usually don't make posts like this, but I am making an exception this time because it's something that needs to be said.
If you are female bodied and do not wish to have children in your lifetime, I highly encourage you to look into getting a bilateral salpingectomy. This is a minor surgery with minimal recovery time that is covered by most insurance where your ovarian tubes are removed but all other reproductive organs are intact. It reduces your risk of pregnancy to zero and risk of ovarian cancer to almost nothing.
It is not getting your tubes tied or clamped, it is full tube removal and is permanent and non-reversible.
It can be difficult to get a doctor to perform female sterilization, but many more doctors who were neutral before are being open minded regarding this at the moment due to the current political climate. If you don't want children, I encourage you to do this sooner rather than later in case laws change within the next few years that limits access or attempts to outlaw this procedure.
Due to the added benefit of ovarian cancer chance reduction, it is easier to find a doctor willing to do this surgery than other types of sterilization and it is 100% guaranteed to prevent pregnancy forever unless you go and get IVF implantation intentionally.
If you are low income, when you receive your hospital bill you can apply for financial assistance through the hospitals website and submit your pay stubs and bank statement and often your bill will be forgiven between 75% and 100% (this is possible with most hospital bills actually depending on where you live. But ensure that you do not have a savings account at the same bank as your checking because this often can disqualify you)
You can often call a gynecologist office and ask the receptionist if any of the doctors perform female sterilization before you go, and they won't go into details but you are just asking if a service is able to be provided or not and they can usually answer that. That way you are less likely to waste time and money. Gynos that are stationed in hospitals are more likely to allow it and quickly get it scheduled rather than referrals.
For reference, reddit has lists of doctors in various states who allow anyone 18 and up to get the surgery, but it is not comprehensive and many are not listed so it is worth calling and asking or checking websites.
I know there might be many barriers for people to have access to this, but I wanted to lend some information to anyone feeling afraid by these new anti abortion laws and even some trying to go after birth control. At least I hope this can give you somewhere to start for info.

went to the gynecologist for the first time yesterday and received my very first Pap smear! The nurse and doctor were so friendly and professional, genuinely one of the easiest and stress free doctors appointments I’ve ever had in my life
The exam itself was completely painless and the doctor let me know exactly what she was going to do before doing and let me know what to expect. I’m sure I’m not alone in expecting the worst when it came to the pelvic exam due to how it’s talked about in media but really it was completely fine! It was less uncomfortable than getting my blood pressure taken.

So I just learned the difference between a good gyno appointment and a bad one... Back where I used to live, the pap smear had me biting my lip it hurt so much and it seemed to take at least a couple of minutes (memory might fail me here and maybe it felt longer than it was). I felt vaguely traumatized after. And she discussed birth control with me, but it felt like she expected me to know what I wanted already. It was my first gyno and I didn't know what it was supposed to be like.
Now that we moved I got a new gyno. She was warm, friendly, really aimed to put me at ease, and when she was done, I literally said, "That was it??" Like, ugh, I'm tearing up thinking about how much nicer it was. She explained my bc options and what was different about them and why I might like another option better. The worst part was them giving a solid 15 minutes for me to take off my clothes and sitting there awkwardly in the paper gown.
Sharing just because the more you know, the sooner you can find better. Wish I had known better before now.

Things I wish more woman spoke openly about…
Why does going to the gynecologist always feel like trauma even though I’m an adult? Is it because you’re on display? Is it because it hurts? Is it because every appt for me is a question of “is it cancer?”

Went to my gyno to get my IUD removed. She asks if I wanted to see it afterwards.
She holds it up to show me like a man with a fish.
