"France became the first country in the world to make abortion a constitutional right Monday [March 4, 2024], with French lawmakers adopting the bill in a 780-72 vote in a move inspired by the U.S. reversal of Roe vs. Wade.
The law gives women a "guaranteed freedom" to choose for themselves if an abortion is the right choice to make.
The amendment won the support of the three-fifths of the 925 National Assembly and Senate members required to pass in an extraordinary afternoon session at the Palace of Versailles just outside Paris in a move that was overwhelmingly supported by the public.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said to those assembled in Congress Hall that "we owe a moral debt" to the women who had to suffer through illegal abortions in the past.
After the vote to approve the constitutional change, Paris' Eiffel Tower was lit with the words in French "my body my choice" in the country where abortion was first legalized in 1975, two years after the United States' first ruling on Roe vs. Wade...
While limiting abortion ranked very low on France's political agenda, lawmakers were prompted to take action to protect abortion rights in 2022 following the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning of the 1973 Roe ruling that legalized abortion. Subsequently, several American states have passed laws to restrict or outlaw the procedure.
"I say to all women within our borders and beyond, that today, the era of a world of hope begins," said Attal, who at 34 became the country's youngest prime minister.
This was the first time since 2008 that France took steps to change its constitution. There will be a ceremony to finalize the amendment on Friday [March 8, 2024], which is also International Women's Day."

[”Abortion will soon be banned in 13 states. Here’s which could be next.”
Trigger ban to take effect within a month: Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky
Likely to ban: Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina
Uncertain: Arizona, Montana, Nebraska, Kansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida
Likely to remain legal: Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, Minnesota, Illinois, New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine]
[”Thirteen states have trigger laws that will ban abortion now that Roe is overturned. BUT only three of them go into effect immediately: Kentucky, Louisiana, and South Dakota. If you have an appointment in those states, CALL YOUR CLINIC NOW. They can help you go somewhere else.
Idaho, Tennessee, and Texas have trigger laws that go into effect after 30 days. If you have an abortion appointment in those states, DO NOT ASSUMED IT'S CANCELED. Call your clinic now. You may have 30 days left in your state. Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, Wyoming also have trigger laws but they require a government process step to go into effect. If you have an appointment in those states, DO NOT ASSUME IT'S CANCELED. There may be time. Call your clinic NOW."]
--------
It is still legal to travel to states where abortion is legal. The FDA allows abortion pills to be available by mail, and they are approved for the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. Telemedicine abortions will banned in states where abortion is illegal, but international groups like Aid Access will offer online consultations and mail pills to all states.
Your internet activity can be used against you in court. Delete any period tracking apps and do not disclose your pregnancy online. Learn about internet privacy to keep your abortion private and secure.

As I discussed in my reply here, when I was impregnated through rape at 14, I had serious medical issues nobody knew about that easily could have killed me (and the "baby"). In fact, not only was it undiagnosed, but at that time virtually no doctors had even heard of what I had, let alone knew how to diagnose it. It wouldn't have been discovered until I was dead - and likely not even then!
Why have I never heard this talked about in abortion discussions? So many women and girls are walking around with serious medical problems that could make pregnancy a threat to their life or potentially permanently disabling. Some of these are probably like mine were then, where most doctors are utterly unfamiliar. All of these, and their undiagnosed state, are a direct product of medical misogyny. This alone should, imho, qualify the life of every single woman and girl as imperiled by pregnancy.
And as I also mentioned in that post, with homicide (male violence) as the leading cause of death for pregnant women, that should further serve as proof that pregnancy alone is a life-endangering condition.
Abortion for all with no conditions and state funding is the ONLY way to save lives.
*Edited as I was 14 when I had the abortion, 15 when all the other shit I disclosed in the linked post went down (the Catholic boarding school covering it up and what they did to me to make that happen)

I'm not going to be reblogging a lot of content about the leaked court opinion brief, for multiple reasons: this is not a very good news platform, you have almost certainly heard about it from sources other than me, and I don't see the value to contributing to an atmosphere of doom.
But one angle that I do think worth signal boosting is to point out that the specter of a post-Roe world is going to pose different dangers and challenges from a pre-Roe one. The increased availability of information and easily portable medicine, combined with the state of Web 2.0 as it is, means that the issue facing a lot of people will be less a lack of access as a lack of privacy.
That is to say: not necessarily that you can't get a certain medical procedure, but that the instant you look at the page that information is going to be available for sale to anyone from your family, your employers, to law enforcement agencies.
For these reasons, I urge people to make note of resources now, and to save them somewhere offline so that if you or someone close to you needs them in the future, they can be passed around without alerting the panopticon. Do not leave a paper trail. A paper trail could bring trouble not only to the door of the person needing help, but to anyone else who helps them along the way.

helpful reminders + ways to support abortion seekers in the US right now
some thoughts/reminders based on what i’ve seen on social media today:
this decision doesn’t just impact women! it impacts anyone who has a uterus! say what you mean and mean what you say, your words have weight and meaning! (glad we could clear that up)
grieving is normal. having big, messy, unwieldy feelings is normal. taking the time to recognize and sit in those emotions is important. wanting to protest is good. wanting to change things is great. being in touch enough with your emotions to recognize that you’re experiencing trauma is just as important.
everyone processes differently. my reaction may not look like your reaction, and yours might not look like the reactions of your friends/family members. many people have jobs/situations that preclude them from taking the sort of actions they’d like to in response to this/other social injustices they’ve seen recently. hold space for those people, the people sticking it out in places where they can’t speak their minds for the sake of creating a better place for those who come after them.
the people in the U.S. didn't ask for this. CNN polled americans after the draft opinion leaked in early may, and at the time 59% of respondents said that they'd support congressional legislation codifying nationwide abortion rights. I know it's easy to make fun of the U.S. by calling us a dumpster fire or saying you're glad your country didn't do this, but know that there are real people on the other side of the globe from you who are reeling from the whiplash of swiveling their gaze between children being gunned down in their schools and the supreme court attempting to delegitimize reproductive rights. it's not a joke for them, particularly not for those who fall into multiple minority communities and will now be facing the brunt of this ruling head-on in more ways than one.
for fucks sake. donate to abortion healthcare providers. not just PP (we love them too, but the smaller ones need the most help). learn how to support yourself/your friends in the event that you need to get an abortion and don’t live in a state where it’s protected. spend time/money investing in the protection of the rights of the groups that found out halfway through the morning that they have fewer rights than family members only one generation above them. grieve with them. care for them. act just as loudly as your words and posts.

Abortion Access Resources
Abortion is still legal in some US states, despite the Dobbs decision.
Hey, everyone, it’s a horrible day here in the United States with Roe and Casey being overturned. But rather than lose hope, let’s keep the fight going because there’s a lot of incredible work being done on the ground.
Here are some places you can donate to, and some further info:
Independent Clinics: Abortion Care Network Abortion Funds:  National Network of Abortion Funds, funds by State, Midwest Access Coalition
Information on Medication Abortions (abortion pills)
State by State trigger laws map with Roe being overturned
RewireNews  (legislative tracker) and the excellent Boom! Lawyered podcast for repro rights news and analysis
New Handbook for a Post-Roe America: The Complete Guide to Abortion Legality, Access, and Practical Support by Robin Marty. Also! Consider requesting your local public library for this book if they don’t have it in their catalogue yet.
Let’s be kind to ourselves and each other today, but let’s not lose hope. The fight continues.

This is both a crisis and an international embarrassment.
If we don’t take real action to stop the RepubliKKKlans the death and suffering will spread to all 50 states.

Republicans have been re-shaping America since the 60’s to suit their views. They have billionaires pumping unlimited dark money into hundreds of political foundations staffed by right-wing scholars and lawyers. We have a handful of social media bloggers sending warnings into the digital ether.
Educate yourself and educate others. They don’t even need to control Congress or the White House to do this. They’ve been doing this at the state level for decades, long before they purchased the Supreme Court.

Mexico’s Supreme Court threw out all federal criminal penalties for abortion Wednesday [September 6], ruling that national laws prohibiting the procedure are unconstitutional and violate women’s rights in a sweeping decision that extended Latin American’s trend of widening abortion access.
The high court ordered that abortion be removed from the federal penal code. The ruling will require the federal public health service and all federal health institutions to offer abortion to anyone who requests it.
“No woman or pregnant person, nor any health worker, will be able to be punished for abortion,” the Information Group for Chosen Reproduction, known by its Spanish initials GIRE, said in a statement.
Some 20 Mexican states, however, still criminalize abortion. While judges in those states will have to abide by the court’s decision, further legal work will be required to remove all penalties.
Celebration of the ruling soon spilled out onto social media.
“Today is a day of victory and justice for Mexican women!” Mexico’s National Institute for Women wrote in a message on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The government organization called the decision a “big step” toward gender equality...
The Details
The court said on X that “the legal system that criminalized abortion” in Mexican federal law was unconstitutional because it “violates the human rights of women and people with the ability to gestate.” ...
-via AP News, September 6, 2023. Article continues below.
The decision came two years after the court ruled that abortion was not a crime in one northern state. That ruling set off a slow state-by-state process of decriminalizing it.
Last week, the central state of Aguascalientes became the 12th state to drop criminal penalties.
Abortion-rights activists will have to continue seeking legalization state by state, though Wednesday’s decision should make that easier. State legislatures can also act on their own to erase abortion penalties.
For now, the ruling does not mean that every Mexican women will be able to access the procedure immediately, explained Fernanda Díaz de León, sub-director and legal expert for women’s rights group IPAS.
What it does do — in theory — is obligate federal agencies to provide the care to patients. That’s likely to have a cascade of effects...
Lifting Abortion Restrictions Across Latin America
Across Latin America, countries have made moves to lift abortion restrictions in recent years, a trend often referred to as a “green wave,” in reference to the green bandanas carried by women protesting for abortion rights in the region.
The changes in Latin America stand in sharp contrast to increasing restrictions on abortion in parts of the United States. Some American women were already seeking help from Mexican abortion rights activists to obtain pills used to end pregnancies.
Mexico City was the first Mexican jurisdiction to decriminalize abortion 15 years ago.
After decades of work by activists across the region, the trend picked up speed in Argentina, which in 2020 legalized the procedure. In 2022, Colombia, a highly conservative country, did the same.

When members of The Satanic Temple see criticism of them and their failed efforts in the name of abortion rights, they often say, “Well, at least they’re doing something.”
Yes, what they’re doing is actively making things worse and making money off of it.
