In all honesty, the funniest thing about this trio (lili/dogen/raz) is the context— like Lili is the daughter of the HEAD of the psychonauts, a prestigious line dating back to the founders, known for their capabilities with fern and then you have dogen who’s the son of another line of prestigious psychics concerning both ACTUAL MURDER and animal telepathy
And then you have like
Some fucking circus dude
Like Raz is a fucking prodigy in itself but from the outside view he is really just “some dude— oh wait, oh shit.” These bitches go to parties and take smug satisfaction in introducing local circus man who also saved the world
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
yeah, pretty much
(BUT ALSO joking aside this is kind of one of the reasons i think they thematically work so well as a trio! mini-essay under cut)
because that’s exactly it, right – Lili and Dogen both grew up immersed in this world. they’re part of it, part of the community, their families are intimately linked with the founding of the Psychonauts. Lili’s dad is the Grand Head, the boss of this organisation that Raz, meanwhile, is so desperate to join. because Raz is the outsider to all of this – he so badly wants to be a part of the action, the heroism, the community. (and also, sure, we find out in PN2 he technically has that family connection too – but he also has, uh, really good reasons not to make that public knowledge lol)
so many of Lili and Raz’s interactions in PN1 turn on the fact that Lili finds camp so routine as to be entirely boring, whereas Raz is so unashamedly passionate about everything. he’s so completely starry-eyed to get a glimpse into this world, and meet the heroes from his comic books – and his enthusiasm ends up being infectious! it’s what Lili needs to break out of her own apathy, and they start conspiring and arranging midnight rendezvous and going on this whole adventure together… and the rest is history.
i just really like how that setup – Lili and Dogen having grown up with the Psychonauts, Raz being an outsider – manifests in a unique dynamic for each of the pairs, y’know? i write Lili and Dogen as childhood friends. they’ve known each other the longest of the three, they have so many shared experiences, and i think on some level they understand each other the best because of how they’ve come from such similar places. Lili and Raz have this incredible shared passion, they hype each other up and feed each others’ senses of wonder and enthusiasm. and for Dogen and Raz – Raz is one of the only people who treats Dogen as just a person, first and foremost. he’s not cowed by his family’s reputation at all, he doesn’t have any of the baggage that so many people do when they hear the name “Boole”... it’s so unexpected and refreshing for Dogen that he can’t help getting attached!
(and not to get too deep, but it’s especially compelling to me when you consider how the game’s narrative around psychic powers is one that parallels neurodivergence, mental illness, trauma, and broad themes of “otherness”... it’s a thread i like to tease at sometimes around how communities can form, and things can bring people together and individuals can find each other and be seen in their shared experiences. it’s funny but it’s also sweet! it’s really sweet to me.)

Future Queepie, Mirtala, Sam, and Lizzie headcanons?
Oh boy that's a lotta characters! Alrighty let's see if my brain will let me remember what I had...
Queepie and Mirtala are still in the circus, but Queepie is leaving for his (second?) Year at camp at the time of the au. He doesn't have a huge "want" to become a Psychonaut like Raz did, but he definitely wants to intern there at some point. He hangs around with Morris and usually has a pair of headphones on. Mirtala has taken a liking to some ballet and fancy dances that she's incorporated into some of the family's acts! She's definitely grown more confidence in doing her own thing, but you can still see some stars in her eyes when her "super cool spy" brother comes to visit. Her and Frazie have also managed to create some very extraordinary acts of their own, combining Frazies Psychic abilities and Mirtalas dances.
Sam (and Dogen sometimes) trains dogs and other pets for Psychic missions! Y'know how the Psychonauts are basically therapists in a way? Well I've been thinking it'd be super cool if there were "therapy pets" that help on missions! And Sam basically runs a little animal school where she walks them through certain mission scenarios and trains them cool tricks. She also volunteers at an animal shelter, and it's helped her become a little more gentle with animals. But she still acts like a grumpy Army Sargent when training animals. I mean, look who her mentor was!
Lizzie is running her own little comic/journalism thing with Adam known as the Brainiacs! As the world goes on and people get older, things are changing and T.P.T is enjoyed by kids and adults. But what about the rebellious teens? The people who want to hear about the paranormal? The dark grim angst that comes with being a Psychic? Well, Lizzie has started this small "project" where she and Adam, and anyone who wants to ride along tbh travel around and get stories and pictures for their own magezine. It's kind of like the hot topic clone of True Psychic Tales.

I ADORE your grown up camper designs sooo much! also your style is very unique and fun!
If it's not a bother, what are some relationships/friendships that formed/changed between them as they've gotten older?
Thank you sm!!
admittedly I sort of wish I would’ve explored campers interacting with different campers than the ones they met in the game, just for the sake of diversity, but even though a lot of the matchups stayed similar, their relationships are very different on account of a lot of them being very different people now lol. Long ass ramblings under the cut!
Clem and Crystal stopped speaking to each other in their early teens. They both joined the Psychonauts intern program at that time, but a big blowout fight between the two resulted in Clem leaving the program. Due to technological barriers and family boundaries, crystal could only ever contact clem at home through letters, but clem didnt respond to any she tried to send to make up, and they fell out of contact entirely. They only recently met back up, with Clem finally coming back to the motherlobe to finish the internship program! The dynamic is… different, and a little awkward, but they can both safely say that their enthusiasm is a lot more genuine than it was when they were teaming up together at camp!
Maloof and Mikhail didn’t really talk much after camp, and I think they just ran into each other on happenstance when they got older. Maloof has been fucking around and getting into trouble, and Mikhail quickly finds that if someone doesn’t keep an eye on this guy, he’s definitely going to get himself killed. He’s Maloof’s strong, silent bodyguard, the muscle in a lot of his plans, and Maloof doesn’t realize that Mikhail is probably a lot smarter than he is and is half the reason their plans ever go right. Mikhail sees Maloof as a younger brother of sorts, and they find him endearing. If not a bit frustrating to deal with.
I think Dogen and Elka keep in touch. After a chance encounter when Elka was around 13, the Psychonauts have been keeping tabs on her. She’s an incredibly strong psychic, with a lot of ties to a current threat of the Psychonauts at the time of this AU. I just sort of think Dogen bonds with her on account of the high power levels, trying to make her feel less like a freak for being under the observation of the psychonauts. Elka definitely sees the similarities between the two of them, and I think she influences Dogen as much as he influences her. Which is to say, as much as he tries to help her feel like a normal person, she’s trying to get him to ditch the psychonauts and join her emo band (villain league.)
Benny and Chloe started becoming very close after Bobby stopped showing up to camp, oddly enough, only heightened when Chloe happened to move into Benny’s neighborhood the summer after the events of PN1. They quickly became local menaces, even if they didn’t get along. Their early teens was a lot of them just hanging around each other because no one else wanted anything to do with them, even if Benny was insistent that Chloe was a freak and he didnt want anything to do with her. But after a few times of them saving each other from school bullies, he just sort of… dropped the act. There was never an acknowledgement that the dynamic had changed, but they did start to become genuine friends in their late teens, around high school. That’s when they definitely started being a force to be reckoned with in their small town. Two kids trying to get away from their dysfunctional households, one of them with an increasing interest in anything that sparks and blows up, Chloe started crafting its whole vigilante alter-ego around this time. Benny was the helping hand in snatching many a thing from around town that Chloe needed for its projects, and once they both graduated they dove head first into a life of psychic adventure. (They wouldn’t call it crime, because they never set out with the intention to become criminals, but you cant deny that their adherence to laws was uh. Lackluster. At best. FOR SCIENCE!)
Bobby has, whether he likes it or not, been adopted into Raz’s inner circle (mostly consisting of Lili and Dogen. But thats not the point.) Bobby and Raz’s relationship is a hellhole of grown adults still absorbed by their childhood conflicts (both internally and toward each other) but once they learn to get along after what im sure is a very long character arc for both of them, they get very close! They bully the hell out of each other, for sure, but it’s done with love. I cant tell if Bobby would have gotten along with Lili sooner than Raz or if it would’ve actually taken them longer to get along. I think Bobby and Lili were a lot more hollowly antagonistic toward each other, just two hard-headed individuals whose personalities really clashed a lot at first. Bobby’s not immune to strong woman though. They end up bonding pretty quick id imagine, almost strangely so. I think it takes Raz a while to tell that they’ve become friends, because the way they talk to each other makes you feel like they want each other dead just as bad as they did when they first met back up again.
Phoebe and Quentin have what is probably the most consistent friendship timeline. Friends since camp, stayed friends since. They met back up with Chops on happenstance when he auditioned for their band (still unnamed at the time) when they were about 20. They quickly fell into a very comfortable group dynamic, there are no such thing as personal boundaries between the three of them. They all live in a self-renovated double-decker bus and travel around the country, sneaking their way into venues that they're absolutely not supposed to be in, spreading their obnoxiously alternative music that barely has the decency to stay consistent from song to song on account of the fact that a different person is usually writing each one. They are banned from so many bars. They’re having so much fun.
I’ve mentioned it before, but Vernon and Kitty met back up when they were older through their jobs at True Psychic Tales. Vernon being a lot less talkative than he used to and Kitty being a lot less of a self-absorbed jerk made meeting back up a little jarring, and for a while the dynamic was very one-sided. Vernon seemed very intent on burying himself in his work and dying at his desk, and Kitty seemed very intent on bugging him whenever necessary and roping him into trouble. their various scooby-doo type shenanigans bring them closer as friends, and they’re very casually intimate. Guys who lean up against each other when theyre talking, guys who put their heads on each others shoulders for some simple comfort, stuff like that. They’re buddies :)

5 and 4 for Lili?
Lilies were a flower for the dead. That was something a lot of people talked about to her. Lili being some "creepy witch who was going to kill those who wronged her." She smiled down at the lilies in the first bouquet she made for her shop, tying the ribbon at the bottom with some blue, pink, and white string. Rebirth was one of her favorite meanings of the flower, so how fitting that her new life as a simple florist would start with these lilies.
Lili's relationship with her mother is strained, however after Truman's kidnapping, the whole family sets out to try to reconcile.
Lili thinks of all of the Psychonauts workers as her family. Many have babysat her before.
Lili HATES the idea of PDA, however starts to do it ironically with Raz to kind of make fun of everything at Whispering Rock... this leads to them doing it unironically.
Lili is childhood friends with Dogen and Elka. However, she's grown distant with Elka since Elka started "maturing into a woman."

Dear Jnv11,
Chief Mod Edgeworth: I think this is more like an error from the wiki itself, which does happen from time to time.
Tumblr media
Simon Keyes did keep track of Dogen and Knightly by translating their letters and correspondence chess from Knightly’s writing to brail and vice versa. So no, he was not playing correspondence chess with either one of them. He was translating the letters and delivering it to them. They might’ve made the mistake of believing they were playing with Simon Keyes, but I don’t remember if they’ve ever mentioned it. As far as I know, the game never states that Simon Keyes had ever played correspondence chess.
It’s also different from playing physical chess and Simon Keyes is in his sweet facade mode, so take that how you will.

Dear Tropetaker,
Chief Mod Edgeworth: Yeah, it is a shame. Though, I am glad Gina’s mentor ended up being Gregson. We get so many terrible mentors and not enough good ones like Mia Fey.
Tumblr media
Dear Miraz van Nohrr,
Chief Mod Edgeworth: Until recently, we couldn’t see any email addresses. If they send ten letters in the span of three minutes, it’s a clear sign it’s from them. There’s also their unique way of writing letters. Not a foolproof way of knowing it’s the same person, but those are just some of the ways we know.
Tumblr media
Now, that we can see email addresses again, it should be easier. Though, it is possible to change the email to make it look like it’s from someone else. It all comes down to the times and minutes each letter is sent.
Mod Franziska: I can kind of tell from their typing style but also when I’m checking letters. If I just see “anonymous” like 10 times then yeah I can tell clearly.
Tumblr media

Dear Inferno,
Chief Mod Edgeworth: It’s okay. Just remember to specify the date the letter takes place in. I sometimes make this mistake when I write letters too.
Tumblr media
Dear Dawsongfg,
Chief Mod Edgeworth: Well, there’s one out of a few things we agree on. Not that it earns a gold star or anything. It just goes without saying.
Tumblr media
Dear Anonymous,
Chief Mod Edgeworth: It’s mostly our interpretation of the characters. We go based on what’s told to us by the other characters and so on. It also helps I have a fan fiction where Cindy Stone is an important character.
Tumblr media
Dear Anonymous,
Chief Mod Edgeworth: One word: NO. Not my thing.
Tumblr media
(Referenced Letter)
Dear Anonymous,
Chief Mod Edgeworth: Alright, so if I was babysitting my neighbor’s daughter from age 10 to age 12 at age 21, then separated seven years later to meet her again at age 18 and decided to date her, that’s completely fine? That, in no way shape or form, would make anyone question if I was a MAP or pedophile?
Let me repeat, a girl I knew from age 10 to age 12, whom I would ONLY know her from that small age, I can fall in love with and date seven years later without anyone batting an eye? This girl, age 18, would still see me as the same person that babysat her at a young age, still looks to me like the babysitter, and dating her would not in any way seem disturbing? Do you have any idea what you are saying?
Tumblr media
Maybe I’m thinking too much, but when my dad met the girl he babysat as a small child decades later, he was freaking out because of how much she grew. The same happens to me. Someone I’ve known as a small child grows up to an adult and it surprises me of how much they’ve grown. Even with the years that have passed, you still see that person as a small child. It’s almost impossible to peer with them at that point. Even Blackquill said so himself that Athena was his mentor’s treasure and Athena constantly tells him not to treat her as a child. What does that tell you? I know it tells me that Blackquill still sees Athena as the small child he looked after for his mentor.
But hey, if you wish to ship them, then do so to your heart’s content. Personally, I’d like to not touch any ships that have any hint of shipping a child with an adult. Using the “oh they’ve been separated for X amount of years” argument feels no different from the “they’re not related, so it’s not incest to ship step-siblings” argument, which is still incest. Please tell me with a straight face that you would totally date the kid you babysat for two years seven years ago, who is now 18.
Again, Kazuma and Barok were ADULTS when they first met. Barok’s brain isn’t going to see Kazuma as a child because Barok didn’t know him as a child. It works in reverse where half the time you forget that this person was a minor ten years ago because you only know them as an adult.
Mod Franziska: Here’s my take on this: lets not ship stuff that is clearly considered pedophilia or incest.
Tumblr media
Dear Dawsongfg,
Chief Mod Edgeworth:
Tumblr media
Hm? Sorry, I was mostly skimming through this letter. What were we talking about again?
Mod Franziska: What should I even say to this?
Tumblr media
Dear dawsongfg,
Mod Justice:
Tumblr media
What in the world are th-
Tumblr media
OH, “LEGO City Undercover”! Okay. Alright.
Tumblr media
Sorry about brain-farting there...
(You really gotta do better than that, Mod Justice...)
Tumblr media
Anyway, yeah. I remember that scene. Although, my favorite isn’t that one or its remake; rather, it’s the one from the 3DS prequel that came out a little later.
Tumblr media
Here’s a playthrough, if anyone’s interested!
Tumblr media
(Referenced Letter)
Chief Mod Edgeworth: No, it’s not. We are remembering those that have given their lives to defend America or loved ones that have passed away. Why shouldn’t we be happy to remember those that have passed away? Are you implying that because they’re dead, we shouldn’t be happy at all? To that, I give you this.
(Warning: Language and vulgar gesture)
Tumblr media
(Previous Letter)
Dear Anonymous,
Chief Mod Edgeworth: Erm... about that. That was Mod Justice that photoshopped the letter to make it look like that. All I did was answer it. It’s much easier to read on the app so I’d try going on your phone to read it. Apologies.
Mod Franziska: We cant really do anything about the quality of the letters we get sent bro.
Mod Justice:
Tumblr media
Yeeeeaaaahhhhh... Sorry about that, guys.
Tumblr media
Dear Blueballoontaco,
Chief Mod Edgeworth: Of course. Thank you for your compliment.
Mod Justice: And an additional thanks for your support!
Tumblr media
Dear Dawsongfg,
Chief Mod Edgeworth: No. Not my thing.
Mod Justice: Aw... I feel you would enjoy it. I mean, it had franchises like Doctor Who and The Goonies while it lasted!
Chief Mod Edgeworth: I’ve already played LEGO Batman and LEGO Star Wars with my younger siblings and... not my thing. I’ve only watched The LEGO Movie and LEGO Batman Movie.
Tumblr media
(Referenced Letter)
Dear Sinyove,
Chief Mod Edgeworth: From what I understand from what limited video clips of the characters saying the name of Khura’in and Kurain, it does seem as if both are pronounced differently. Take it as you will.

Thought abt ur psychonauts grown up ideas-- Dogen as the new mail clerk....
oh my god anon. oh my god. dogen starting his first day and getting told he will never be as great as a mail guy as nick johnsmith. ''but wasnt he evil'' ''well everyone makes mistakes sometimes'' him getting his animal friends to sort packages as some kind of pyromanic snow white. him getting overwhelmed anyways and setting the mail room on fire thrice a week. eventually he grows to like it and even finds it somewhat therapeutic but one time Evil Mail (tm) or whatever dragged him along some incredibly stressfull psychonauts mission so now he just blows up any Suspicious Mail he sees which makes him get into even more trouble. but everyone at HQ loves this Fucked Up Little Man so he gets away with everything (as he should)

Rating the Good Boys of Ace Attorney
1.       Missile
Tumblr media
The adorable, the original; a handsome Shiba Inu with investigative skills like no other.
Pros: a skilled, lovable, and clearly talented boy, faithful friend to Detective Gumshoe, the best secret weapon by far.
Cons: None known.
If you don’t choose Missile first just to walk around and find dialogue with this wonderful boy, you’re playing Turnabout Goodbyes wrong. Rating: 10/10.
2.       Anime Missile (Pess)
Tumblr media
Edgeworth’s dog in the flashback episodes, a faithful and super-cute Pomeranian modelled and named after Shu Takumi’s own dog. Presumably an on-screen interpretation of Edgeworth’s dog Pess, who is such a wonderfully good girl that she is only mentioned in interviews and doesn’t even appear in the games, because Capcom knows that if she appeared the degree of goodness would melt the console.
Pros: another very talented boy, can easily find his way back home if he has a trail to follow. Abandoned once but still keeps up his spirits and looks after little Miles. Does a killer MvK cosplay.
Cons: Accidentally caused the class trial by giving Edgeworth’s money to Larry. Then again, the trial meant Edgeworth and Phoenix became friends, so I guess it was a good thing after all…?
It doesn’t bear on his score because he’s too cute to be malicious. Rating: 10/10
3.       Napalm
Tumblr media
Mixing things up, we have a good GIRL here! Another Pomeranian; you can tell that she’s a Girl® because of her eyelashes, pink bow, and pink heart-shaped marking. Nevertheless, still an indescribably good girl.
Pros: Cute, stylish and ridiculously valuable girl. Indirectly helped Edgeworth become a prosecutor. Missile chasing after her in the same episode as Phoenix trying to contact Edgeworth makes her a lowkey Edgeworth mirror??? Very pretty with a wonderful name.
Cons: Absolutely none.
If she came up to me on the street I would cry because she’s so cute. Rating: 10/10
4.       Constantine
Tumblr media
To add a twist, here’s an unbelievably fluffy non-canon boy! He’s Inquisitor Barnham’s dog, and is responsible for the scar on Barnham’s face. He doesn’t seem to have a canon breed, but that’s okay, because he’s small and fluffy and that’s what matters.
Pros: A good boy, with a lot of personality! He’s feisty and clever enough to give puzzles to Layton, Wright & co. Just look at him!!! I can honestly say I have never seen a better boy. He even plays a role in the endgame of PLvsAA when Barnham can’t make it.
Cons: Attacked Nick when he tried to pet him, so he’s not the most well-mannered boy, but that’s okay!! He’s cute enough to get away with it.
He may be the only dog in the world to be an official member of an order of knights. Rating: 10/10
5.       Shah’do
Tumblr media
Ahlbi’s puppy who can’t seem to decide if he’s a dog or a hat. He’s canonically a Tibetan mastiff, which means that when he’s all grown up, he’ll be about three times the size he is now! Quite mischievous, but never causes too much trouble, and it all works out in the end.
Pros: He’s loyal, adorable, cute and intelligent, even sensing and reflecting Ahlbi’s emotions! He really is one of the cutest boys I’ve ever seen.
Cons: Naughty!!
Clearly has magical Khura’inese powers of cuteness, judging by the mitamah marking on his forehead. Rating: 10/10
6.       Jugemu
Tumblr media
The dog who lives at the Toneido School’s Kurukuru Tei theatre, this boy deserves some more love!! A beautiful good boy with a very healthy appetite; he single-handedly convinced me that Turnabout Storyteller is the best case in AA6. He only appears in one graphic, but I love him nevertheless.
Pros: He has an adorable little kennel so he can stay out of the rain when he has to, and he’s instrumental in solving the case.
Cons: None whatsoever!
I wanted to see more of him! Rating: 10/10
There are a few more good boys, but they have plot roles in DGS2 and AAI2, so beware of serious spoilers under the cut!
Spoilery (But Still Good) Boys
1.       Anubis
Tumblr media
One of the scarier boys on the list! He’s the guide dog of the blind assassin Sirhan Dogen, and while he’s very clever, he’s also very intimidating! He resembles a Tosa, a breed also known as Japanese mastiffs. (He’s probably killed people in the past, but let’s brush over that for a moment.)
Pros: He’s a startlingly long-lived boy! Unless Dogen replaces his dogs on the down-low (which feels unlikely) he’s been at Dogen’s side for nineteen years! Plus, I feel like if I was nice to him, he would let me pet him.
Cons: You know what? None. He doesn’t have a single malicious bone in his furry body, he’s just a deeply loyal and obedient boy. It’s not his fault that his master is an assassin; he’s still a good boy!
Despite having such a scary reputation, Anubis did nothing wrong. …Kind of. Rating: 10/10
2.       Balmung
Tumblr media
The second scarily good boy on our list, Balmung is another good but admittedly terrifying boy. He is the dog of a serial killer, the Professor, and he most closely resembles a lurcher hound, though his breed was never confirmed. Despite outward appearances, I promise you he’s a good boy at heart- he just happened to also be used as a murder weapon.
Pros: He’s the real Hound of the Baskervilles, how cool is that? He’s also quite an old boy, living for at least twelve years and remaining active even then. And he’s listed as his owner’s friend on the Ace Attorney wiki, which is also very cute, and strong evidence of his good boy nature.
Cons: …He’s kinda scary…!
Tumblr media
Overall, despite being quite a frightening boy, Balmung means well. Rating: 10/10
3.       Toby
Tumblr media
In stark contrast to the previous two good but murder-y boys, we have one of the cutest boys of the whole series: Toby!! He’s Gina’s dog after she becomes a detective, and is honestly my favourite good boy in the series (but shhh, that’s a secret!) Toby is based on a dog of the same name from the Holmes novels!
Pros: Seriously, just look at him! He’s a classically cute boy. He’s the Platonic Ideal of what a good boy should be. And he’s talented, too- he helps Naruhodou solve a lot of cases!
Cons: …He does attack Naruhodou once. But it leads into the best joint reasoning segment of the whole game, so I can forgive him.
It’s especially sweet when you realise that in-universe Toby is probably named after Gina’s mentor, Tobias Gregson! Rating: 10/10

J HAVE SOOOOOOO MANY COMPTON BOOLE HEADCANONS YOUH AVE NO CLUE. hes literally the cutest girl????? like look at him he's so handsome aww
anyway
um back in the day (his child years) i think he really liked to just sit in large fields and talk to whatever came up to him. just about life. by the river. oh look! an interesting toad. hello, sir!
i have a compton boole daughter oc but i wont spread birdie boole propaganda but like. compton boole is a pro at being a good dad
his house is so cozy and small but like. there's this one wall of just. PICTURES
pictures of sam and dogen, everything they ever made for him, little drawings they did, every christmas card he's ever received
oh on the topic of drawing. i think compton likes to draw. just a little doodle for the silliest goose
The big wall full of photos and pictures is very sweet he likes to keep momentos this is true and real you saw the bowling stuff in his chamber
also love the vision of little freakin baby guy boole sitting in a lovely little field. idyllic. serene.
I like to think Compton really enjoys the novelty of the toddler toys his kid & grandkids played with like ohoho this kitchen set is animal themed how charming [retained a desire for animal themed kitchenware until he eventually did get one for grown ups]. I think a lot about how his original mental world concepts skewed a lot more toward "toybox" than "game show" and the echos you can see of that in the game show itself (building blocks, those wire toys you shove beads back n forth on). Compton likes toys he'd collect them I think. what kind of toys? idk, maybe memoriabilia for a book or show he'd liked growing up and shared w/his kids

ask roundup pt2
Tumblr media
@panickingpaganan thank you!!! :D
Tumblr media
@beneath-these-bones so this is the other ask that got me thinking about older Elka, that kind of inspired Face Thy Doom. i ended up with kind of an understated take on Elka but i just want to say that the mental image of this soothsayer draped in huge pelts is extremely choice and rad as hell, and i might still draw it at some point because it's very cool

@lorddio1888 to be honest, i haven't really thought about a lot of the campers! i'm kinda picking away at them as and when inspiration strikes me. i think some of them definitely could be! like, i think someone like Kitty would really suit a career in espionage, haha. others, like Mikhail, joined the intern program but never became full agents - either because (like in Mikhail's case) they became disillusioned with the organisation, or just because... i imagine it's kind of a crappy job.
like, from what we see, the budget is terrible, the agents are kind of overworked with minimal mental health support (to the point where one of their agents going rogue and attempting to take over the world is, like, just something that kind of happens), and overall it seems like a job with long hours that you have to be really willing to dedicate yourself to. folks like Raz and Bobby are in the job because they really believe in the cause and helping people and stuff; folks like Lili and Dogen are in it because they've grown up totally immersed in that kind of culture; but i think it takes a pretty special kind of person to become a psychonaut.
i kind of imagine that most young psychics will attend a few years of summer camp, learn to control their powers, and then just kind of go on to live a mundane life and use their abilities for chores and stuff hahaha.

@firefly9587 ohh this is super nice! the violin in the instrumental section is very aquato family, haha. it really strikes me as a Frazie song specifically! thanks for the rec :)

@loudlychoppedbread ABSOLUTELY he is. once a comic nerd, always a comic nerd. he and Lili read the new issues together every single month, TPT day is like A Whole Thing
my headcanon is that they can't actually use his name or likeness while he's still a kid for, like, legal reasons? so the first few issues come out with his stories in them and he's SO PSYCHED until he realises they've replaced him with this weird blue kid with a long hat? what the heck?? but once he turns eighteen he and Lili and the others can make proper appearances. every so often someone will recognise him at the grocery store or something and he's always SO delighted

The Sweetness of Life.
“If you understand, things are just as they are; if you do not understand, things are just as they are.”
When first stepping onto the Path the inclination is to treat it like any other course of study. You read books, watch videos, discuss the matter with friends and perhaps find a teacher. These, you believe, will bring about that “Aha!” moment called enlightenment. The above quote, however, points to the fact that studying Buddhism is not the same as practicing Buddhism. And that understanding isn’t a necessary precondition for enlightenment. That doesn’t mean that study doesn’t have a place but as Zen Master Dogen said, “Practice is enlightenment.”
What is practice/enlightenment? First, it’s not a thing you can experience or understand objectively. It’s not an idea. Nor is it a feeling or state. To me, it is synonymous with consciousness. So, when a teacher says, “You’re already enlightened,” she is really saying that I’m already the consciousness that I seek. That I Am Consciousness.
Consciousness, as it is used here, is a symbol. It is a finger that points to the moon. And just as it is pure foolishness to confuse a finger with the moon so is it folly to confuse the word consciousness with that which it points to. For unlike the moon in the sky, you cannot see, hear, think, feel or in any other way experience consciousness as an objective thing. It is the subject to all objects that is never an object, to use the language of Franklin Merrell-Wolff.
The mind, hearing all this, will nevertheless continue to look for this ‘thing’ called consciousness. That’s to be expected for that is what the mind does. No matter how many times a teacher tells you to ‘just sit’ or just be aware of the breath, the mind will continue to look for something to ‘get’ or experience. You can spend your entire life seeking this thing called enlightenment, but you’ll never find it for It isn’t an ‘it’ at all.
When a teacher tells you to give up the search, she doesn’t mean that you should abandon your practice. She means that practice isn’t a searching activity. It’s the practice of waking to distraction and returning to the present moment. Searching takes you out of the present moment and, as such, is just another distraction. Just another thought. When it arises, you acknowledge it as thinking (or searching) and return to the present moment. To things just as they are.
A while ago I was having my evening milk and cookies. I’ve grown quite accustomed to the way my mind always looks forward to this treat but then, when the time comes to enjoy it, curiously wanders off onto other matters. But that evening there was just the sweetness of the coconut cookie. Off to the side there was a vague sense of an I that in the past said it was what enjoyed the coconut but that night this I wasn’t enjoying the sweetness. There was just sweetness.
The mind always wants to superimpose something over direct experience. To call it good or bad. To compare it to the past or to something hoped for in the future. The mind has been doing this for so long that you’ve come to believe that these superimpositions are the reality of your life when they are just thoughts about reality. This false distinction leaves you one step removed from life. And the biggest cause of this sense of separation is the superimposed thought of a self, or ego, that is having this experience. And as long as you believe that you are this self, you’ll never get to experience things directly as they are in the present moment. You’ll never get to just sit in the sweetness of life.
The truth is there is no self-existent I. It is a concept made up of various sensations, thoughts and feelings that has been superimposed over the consciousness that is your true nature. When that concept falls away the sweetness of pure consciousness can be known directly. Sweetness that passeth all understanding. Sweetness that is, whether there is an “I” there to enjoy it or not.

Isshin headcanons that got kinda out of hand (I was working and it was mostly busy and my brain does this as background noise while I focus)
Honestly Isshin smells like sake unless he hasn’t had any recently (so he always smells like sake)
He’s pansexual. He was super popular yes like that but chilled out a lot when he adopted Genichiro cause he suddenly had a good reason to not stay out all night.
I’m never giving up the Genichiro is a biological grandson as well as adopted thing
He does really like kids. Kids, generally, really like him too.
He loves sword fighting; he also really likes teaching people how to sword fight. He taught Genichiro, he taught Emma when she asked, He’s offered to Kuro a few times. Kuro took him up on it but didn’t tell Wolf cause Kuro is serioulsy bad at swords. Kuro’d be great with bow and arrow but that means asking Genichiro
Isshin cannot shoot arrows to save his life. Just straight cannot. He has broken so many arrows trying (he’s not gonna give up he’s Isshin Ashina the Sword Saint, he can do this!) Genichiro’s first order when he took over running Ashina was to ban Isshin from using bows.
That said, Isshin is great with a rifle. He isn’t sure where the bow/rifle disconnect is.
His six-shooter thing is a gift from Dogen.
He had the Black Mortal Blade before he hid it (and Genichiro found it). It’s the sword he used fighting Tamura, and the sword he used to cut off Sculptor’s arm when he was becoming a Shura, which is what made it a mortal blade. Because he was the first user, it’s tied to him but using it too often will lead to his death (Yeah it was illness that took him out but Genichiro starting to use the sword sped things up a lot)
Yeah Isshin loves sake but, food wise? Fish. Sake is a good way to make him like you but fish is the way to his heart.
Usually he’s very polite to Emma, because she’s just trying to help. He knows that. Didn’t stop him swearing at her when she told him he needed to start using a cane. He did not start using a cane and she’s still concerned
The Ashina clan had been in charge of the land before Tamura and his predecessors took over; Isshin’s parent’s weren’t nobles but his grandparents were.
He got used to being a lord as he went along; by the rest of the country’s standards Ashina nobles are super chill.
He knew there was gonna be a huge body count with the rebellion and did his best to mitigate it and take of the people effected; lots of war widows work at the castle if they can still work, lots of orphans got adopted by the higher up leaders who survived
As an Ashina clan in general thing, they’re all really tall? But it goes, normal sized person until they’re like, 14. Then Voosh.
Noble or not every Ashina kid gets at least five years of wearing a parent’s old clothes because they grow too fast for making new clothes to really be feasible; its like, you finish making this set and they’ve already outgrown it.
Isshin was pissed cause five years of wearing your dad’s clothes? Seriously? And then when Genichiro started growing he went “oh actually this was smart” and Genichiro was pissed he was wearing his grandfather’s old stuff for five years
Isshin turned, like, 19, hadn’t grown at all for a few months, his parents said okay we’re getting you clothing that isn’t your dad’s. Two weeks after he gets new clothing he grew another inch. He got to sew extra fabric onto all of his clothing because you just got these, clothing is expensive we’re not getting you more when you’re going to keep growing
(Isshin already didn’t like wearing shirts, Genichiro got used to not while he was growing and that stuck)
Side note: 1) This is gonna happen to Kuro. Isshin warned him already, but decided to just let Wolf find out on his own. 2) Every single Ashina/related family member ends up with stretch marks to make a tiger envious because they pretty much shoot up like two and a half feet in two years. When Genichiro was little he misunderstood what Isshin meant by that and spent three weeks convinced he was gonna be a tiger. Kuro did too when his dad mentioned

Discover Your True Nature: Self-Inquiry Meditation
Tumblr media
Turning your light inward and starting the course of self-inquiry is a straightforward yet effective method of meditation.
Like most meditators, I began my spiritual journey with a solitary, classic strategy: counting my breaths. After 6 months, tired with checking, I took up complying with the feelings of the breath and also, a few years later, 'just sitting'-- the relaxed, concentrated, complete understanding considered by lots of Zen masters to be the total expression of enlightenment itself.
Just sitting been successful in unwinding my body and calming my mind, yet it never brought the deep insights I yearned to experience. Sure, I could focus for extended amount of times as well as bend spoons with my laserlike focus (just kidding!). After five years of extensive resorts, I hadn't yet accomplished kensho, the profound awakening that Zen individuals proclaim as the peak of the spiritual path.
So I altered instructors and took up the study of koans, those ancient training puzzles (like 'Just what is the noise of one hand clapping?') that aim to frustrate the mind, force it to allow go of its restricted point of view, as well as open it to a significantly new way of viewing reality. With the assistance of my educators-- that offered 'motivating' words like 'Pass away on your padding'-- I succeeded over the years in producing satisfactory reactions to several hundred koans. I still had not experienced an innovation glance of my Buddha-nature. I went back to 'just resting' as well as ultimately wandered away from Zen entirely.
After practicing meditation periodically for several years, I bumped into Jean Klein, an instructor of the Hindu Advaita (' non-dual') Vedanta tradition, his knowledge and also visibility reminded me of the excellent Zen masters I would certainly review in publications. From Jean, I found out an easy concern that promptly captured my creativity: 'That am I?' Several months later, as I carefully asked, the response I had been seeking for a lot of years was disclosed. Somehow, the clearness and directness of the inquiry, along with the loosened up receptiveness of the inquiry, enabled it to penetrate deep inside as well as subject the secret that lay surprise there.
Both koan research study as well as the concern 'Who am I?' are typical approaches of peeling off back the layers that conceal the truth of our important nature the method clouds cover the sun. Called kleshas by Buddhists and vasanas or samskaras by Hindus and yogis, these obscurations are the familiar stories, feelings, self-images, ideas, as well as responsive patterns that keep us related to our minimal, ego-based individuality and seem to stop us from opening to the nondual enormity of that we truly are: the ageless, quiet, ever-present location of being, which Hindus and yogis call Self as well as Zen masters call real nature.
Most basic meditation methods, such as complying with the breath or reciting a rule, goal to kick back the body, quiet the mind, and cultivate conscious recognition of today minute. But these strategies do not urge 'the in reverse step' described by the renowned Zen instructor Master Dogen, the one 'that transforms your light inwardly to illuminate' your true nature. In regards to a standard allegory, they soothe the pool of the mind as well as allow the debris to settle, but they do not take us to the base where the dragon of truth stays. For this we require just what the fantastic 20th-century Advaita sage Ramana Maharshi called atma vichara, or 'self-inquiry,' whether in the kind of probing concerns like 'That am I?' or provocative Zen koans that plumb the depths of our being.
Admittedly, self-inquiry is just for the mentally daring, those who are obsessed with locating the response to life's inmost questions-- people like the Buddha, who took a seat after years of asceticism and pledged not to get up till he recognized that he was, or Ramana Maharshi, that, when overtaken by the worry of fatality at age 16, busily explored who he was otherwise his physique and also spontaneously stired up to his identity as the deathless, eternal Self. Not everybody has extensive and also transformative experiences like these popular spiritual masters, yet each people in our very own method has the potential to catch a life-altering glance of the radiant sun of real nature. Actually, only such peeks have the prospective to release us from suffering once as well as for all.
Traditionally, self-inquiry is an advanced technique usually reserved for the spiritually fully grown. In the Tibetan Buddhist practice, for example, professionals could spend years developing focused existence, understood as shamatha, or 'tranquil abiding,' before continuing to the penetrating technique of vipassana, or "insight."
In my experience, the twin practices of following (or relaxing) and making inquiries interact like the left as well as right foot in strolling. First we relax in the peace and also clarity of our standard sitting technique, whatever it may be. When the waters are reasonably still, we ask, and also the query may expose a brand-new degree of understanding into the silence and serenity of our crucial nature that allows us to rest even more deeply. And from this deeper resting, we have the capability to make inquiries even further.
Ask and Receive
To begin the method of self-inquiry, rest for reflection as common. If you do not already have a normal practice, simply sit quietly as well as allow the mind to resolve naturally. Don't try to concentrate your mind or manipulate your experience, just remainder as awareness itself. (Your mind won't understand exactly what I'm speaking around, yet your being will.) After 10 or 15 minutes, when the mind is fairly open and also present, introduce the question 'That am I?' The factor of this question is not to involve the mind, due to the fact that the mind undoubtedly nibbles on questions constantly like a dog on a bone, with little nutritional advantage. Instead, drop the question into the serenity of your being like a stone into a still woodland swimming pool. Let it send surges via your reflection, however do not attempt to figure it out!
When the fish pond is relaxing once more, decrease in an additional pebble and also see just what takes place. Allot any conceptual solutions, such as 'I am a kid of God' or 'I am consciousness' or 'I am a spiritual being of light,' and also return to the question. True at a certain level, these solutions will certainly not please your cravings for spiritual food. As you proceed your self-inquiry, you may discover that the inquiry begins to permeate your awareness-- you may find on your own asking it not only throughout reflection however at unanticipated times throughout the day.
Instead of 'That am I?' you may like asking, 'That is believing this thought? That is translucenting these eyes now?' These inquiries route your understanding internal, far from the outside world and toward the resource from which all experiences occur. Indeed, anything you can regard, no issue exactly how intimate-- consisting of the collection of images, memories, feelings, and ideas you require you-- is simply an item of understanding. Yet that is the experiencer, the perceiver, the best subject of all those objects? This is the real inquiry at the heart of 'That am I?'
For the technique of self-inquiry to function its magic, you should already identify at some level that the word I, though ostensibly referring to the mind and body, really points to something much further. When we say, 'I really feel,' 'I see,' or 'I stroll,' we're discussing the experiencer or doer we imagine to be inside. What does this 'I' look like, as well as where is it situated? Sure, your mind assumes, feels, and views, however do you actually think you live in the mind? If not, after that are you actually? Allow your questions be earnest however easy, without stress or anxiousness. Here's a hint: You certainly won't find the answer in the file folders of spiritual beliefs you've collected for many years, so look somewhere else, in your real, present experience. Ask on your own, 'Where is this 'I' here and also currently?'
Awake to the Present
Eventually, the question 'That am I?' discloses the solution, not as a thought or a specific experience however as a vibrant, timeless existence that underlies and infuses every experience. When you stir up to this presence, you might be surprised to find that it has actually been there the whole time, as the unacknowledged context and also area where life unfolds.
Both Zen and also Advaita masters show that this awake, conscious visibility looking out with your eyes and also my eyes now is the same awareness that peered via the eyes of the sages as well as roshis of old. Your awareness could not be as clear or as stable as theirs was, this timeless visibility is really the Buddha-nature, or authentic Self, to which the fantastic bibles point.
Once you recognize who you actually are, you can never ever neglect it, though the mind will certainly do its ideal to cover this fact with its immediate needs for your interest. As you maintain going back to rest in the silent existence you understand yourself to be, your habitual identification with the body-mind will gradually release, as well as you will start to taste the tranquility as well as happiness of real spiritual flexibility. In the words of an additional terrific Indian sage, Nisargadatta Maharaj, 'You merely have to figure out your source as well as use up your headquarters there.'
