new comic is done!! this one was a DOOZY and i changed my workflow like six times, but in the end i think it came together really nice! it's, uh, probably the last longer one i'm gonna do for a while, though :P
i'll probably add a little step-by-step in a reblog tomorrow. for now, catch the transcript under the cut!
Vanishing Act, over the intercom: So sorry I can't stay and watch you be devoured by pyro-sharks, but I've got my curtain call to make... and the audience are simply dying to see me. Ciao, agents! Or should I say... CHOW! AHAHAHAHAHA!
(Caught in one of Vanishing Act's villainous death traps, agents Zanotto and Aquato find themselves hanging by a thread in... "LOVE BITES!")
(sfx: Clink, clink)
Lili: Welp. At least now you've got an excuse to miss Franke and Kitty's wedding.
Raz: Oh, my GOD. I can't believe you're still going on about that.
Lili: I don't get why you're being so stubborn about it!
Raz: Because Kitty's a jerk and I hate her.
Lili: That's not true.
Raz: Yes it is! That cruise ship mission we went on, she left me to barf my guts out for like two hours!
Lili: Well maybe you shouldn't have eaten all that shrimp!
Raz: Well MAYBE I didn't know it was POISONED!
(sfx: clink, clink)
Lili: ...c'mon, Raz. That's not the only reason, is it?
Raz: I guess I just... I feel weird about it, y'know? It makes me think about us.
Lili: Wow. Way to make things all about you.
Raz: Oh, c'mon, you know that's not what I meant.
Lili: Well what do you mean?
Raz: It just... sometimes, I...
Raz: Relationships are - complicated, right? I'm happy for them, but it makes me think about our own relationship. And how there are... milestones, and - and certain expectations, and... and marriage is... well, it's...
(He sighs)
Raz: Ow.
(sfx: BONK)
Raz: There's give on my right wrist.
Lili: Can you pass it under?
Raz: One second...
Lili: Alright. Just gotta get my legs free...
Lili: Hey. D'you... want to get married?
Raz: ...no. No, and I feel - terrible about it.
Raz: Because I - because we don't have a traditional relationship. And I don't want to have that with you. I like how we are now. But then I see other people our age getting married, and it makes me worry that... that I'm letting you down, or not doing enough as your boyfriend, and that - that maybe you deserve someone who...
Lili: Raz?
Raz: Yeah?
Lili: I love you.
Raz: I love you too.
Lili: You're being stupid.
Raz: I know.
(sfx: paf)
Lili: ...listen. We should talk about this. But, uh, maybe not in the pyro shark death trap.
Raz: ...huh. Y'know, these are great whites. You can't keep them in a tank. They need the space of open water.
Raz: Which means I'll bet anything that this... leads to the ocean.
Lili: Then let's get a move on. We've got a party to crash.

In flower shop au, does sammy have tattoos? Susie? Jack? Etc?
almost everyone in FSAU has tattoos because I needed some way to add ink back in. and tattoos are nice. I don’t have refs for everyone, but here are some (causally covered with cheap black underwear, where it could be,,) semi nude refs of the few I do have designs for,
Joey has a thorns pattern, where one arm stays completely thorny and the other is full of flowers. All black work, and for some reason the thorns are crushing a flower over his heart? weird,
Sammy has two tattows, one in his ear of a rose and a treble clef, the other is on his thigh, white hydrangeas and an alto clef, specifically upside down, so when he views it it’s rightside up. because that one is for him.
Jack has an inkwell with flowers on his arm, and a quote on his lower back. I couldn’t think of a cool literary quote, so this one is actually from a video I sometimes return to whenever I’m feeling exhausted;

In all honesty, the funniest thing about this trio (lili/dogen/raz) is the context— like Lili is the daughter of the HEAD of the psychonauts, a prestigious line dating back to the founders, known for their capabilities with fern and then you have dogen who’s the son of another line of prestigious psychics concerning both ACTUAL MURDER and animal telepathy
And then you have like
Some fucking circus dude
Like Raz is a fucking prodigy in itself but from the outside view he is really just “some dude— oh wait, oh shit.” These bitches go to parties and take smug satisfaction in introducing local circus man who also saved the world
yeah, pretty much
(BUT ALSO joking aside this is kind of one of the reasons i think they thematically work so well as a trio! mini-essay under cut)
because that’s exactly it, right – Lili and Dogen both grew up immersed in this world. they’re part of it, part of the community, their families are intimately linked with the founding of the Psychonauts. Lili’s dad is the Grand Head, the boss of this organisation that Raz, meanwhile, is so desperate to join. because Raz is the outsider to all of this – he so badly wants to be a part of the action, the heroism, the community. (and also, sure, we find out in PN2 he technically has that family connection too – but he also has, uh, really good reasons not to make that public knowledge lol)
so many of Lili and Raz’s interactions in PN1 turn on the fact that Lili finds camp so routine as to be entirely boring, whereas Raz is so unashamedly passionate about everything. he’s so completely starry-eyed to get a glimpse into this world, and meet the heroes from his comic books – and his enthusiasm ends up being infectious! it’s what Lili needs to break out of her own apathy, and they start conspiring and arranging midnight rendezvous and going on this whole adventure together… and the rest is history.
i just really like how that setup – Lili and Dogen having grown up with the Psychonauts, Raz being an outsider – manifests in a unique dynamic for each of the pairs, y’know? i write Lili and Dogen as childhood friends. they’ve known each other the longest of the three, they have so many shared experiences, and i think on some level they understand each other the best because of how they’ve come from such similar places. Lili and Raz have this incredible shared passion, they hype each other up and feed each others’ senses of wonder and enthusiasm. and for Dogen and Raz – Raz is one of the only people who treats Dogen as just a person, first and foremost. he’s not cowed by his family’s reputation at all, he doesn’t have any of the baggage that so many people do when they hear the name “Boole”... it’s so unexpected and refreshing for Dogen that he can’t help getting attached!
(and not to get too deep, but it’s especially compelling to me when you consider how the game’s narrative around psychic powers is one that parallels neurodivergence, mental illness, trauma, and broad themes of “otherness”... it’s a thread i like to tease at sometimes around how communities can form, and things can bring people together and individuals can find each other and be seen in their shared experiences. it’s funny but it’s also sweet! it’s really sweet to me.)

he did like six weeks of classes at one point (because he's the kind of guy who picks up new hobbies with an intense focus for a month or two and then gives up and moves on to something new, lol). he's pretty good at it, though! his existing acrobatic skillset meant he picked up all the basic moves really quickly, and although it's pretty niche it does come in handy every so often

bit of an odd ask but have you ever created a design for like “anon people” to interact with the characters, I’ve seen certain blogs do it so like if someone asks “hey (CHARACTER) can I hug you” they can draw them doing that. Usually it’s a weird grey person or something

Raz: So I took stuff off the shelves to dust them.
Raz: And then I thought, 'hey, I'd better dust the pictures, too!' So I took them down. But then I remembered the stain we were covering up behind your uncle's wedding [photographs].
Raz: So I figured I'd better paint over it, except this paint doesn't match and the hardware store is shut so I gotta paint the whole wall and...
Raz: ...
Raz: ...I don't think these new meds are working out.

i am sick so apropos of that here are how the fsau trio act when they're sick
Dogen: big believer in sleeping it off. a good night's sleep is enough of a rarity as is for him, if his body is telling him that he needs to nap for 14 hours straight in the middle of the day then he sure isn't gonna argue back. you can tell he's feeling under the weather because he's very low-energy, much less verbal than usual and has trouble focusing on stuff. just wants to burrow under 14 blankets and eat chicken noodle soup. his mom always used to read him to sleep when he was little so he finds the sound of someone's voice very comforting, if one of the others isn't around he'll put on an audiobook or a cooking show at a low volume just to have on in the background
Lili: get so pissed off about being sick because she has things to do dammit! she doesn't have time to stay in bed all day just because of some stupid cold. she's a very unruly patient when it comes to milder illnesses, but if she's feeling really bad then the façade kind of falls away and she becomes very needy and clingy. if you bring her a bowl of soup or a cup of hot lemon tea she WILL cry. prone to having extremely bizarre fever dreams that she will groggily recount to you on waking, and then get mad when you're confused because to her the dream made perfect sense
Raz: if he's sick, no he's not what are you talking about. get that thermometer away, he's fine. total dumbass when it comes to knowing his limits, has on occasion worked himself to the point of collapse and one of the others had to come and drag his sorry noodle ass back home. has to be physically restrained to get him to rest up, will continue insisting he's fine even though he's running a high fever and clearly delirious. when you can actually get him to rest he bounces back pretty quickly though

I assume you can't do too much huge art stuff while waiting to heal up, but I would love to hear about your headcanons for the FSAU cast - be they favourites or just ones that makes you smile. How much of a menace was Raz for Lil and Doges when he went under the knife?

he basically yote himself onto the operating table as soon as he turned 18, haha. he was an absolute nightmare during the recovery, though. it was at the time when Lili took a few years out from the psychonauts to go to college, and he kept calling her like "hey do you think it's okay if i go for a run as long as i don't move my arms too much. i was thinking i could hold them behind me like naruto" "raz you had surgery four days ago"
actually, since you asked about general headcanons, more rambling about that time of their lives under the cut!:
i've talked a little before about how Raz and Lili had a pretty tumultuous relationship during their teens, haha. i think around 17/18, things start to simmer down between them. they're still really close, but stuff's not as volatile, and they come to the decision that they want to take a break for a while. no matter how good friends they are, it can be kind of stifling to still be dating the same person you were when you were ten, y'know?
and like i said, this was also when Lili took a break from the Psychonauts. for me, one of the central anxieties of her character is figuring out who she wants to be outside of the Zanotto family's legacy and the expectations of everyone else. we see in PN1 she has kind of a skeptical view of the Psychonauts as a whole - but at the same time, it's the only world she's ever known. she's been training at the Motherlobe since she was a baby. she's spent her whole life immersed in this world, and i think she has a lot of big questions to ask herself as she enters adulthood: who am I? who do I really want to be?
so she takes a break to go study! i haven't decided exactly what, but i think she does something like a major in biological sciences and a minor in pharmaceuticals. she has a great time, and taking that time out ends up being what she needs to realise that actually she does want to stick with the Psychonauts. she and Raz go on their first mission together, things just click, and the rest is history hahaha
#girls go to college to get more knowledge#boys stay in the same high-stress job they've had since they were ten out of crushing indecision paralysis and a looming identity crisis#(raz later does a part-time undergraduate degree as well though! he has a bachelor's in psychology or something)#ask#and thank you!!!#future superstar agents au#fsau raz#fsau meta#fsau lili#raz and dogen go on a lot of missions together while lili's away#they don't start dating yet though. there's just a lot of ~tension~#honestly. i'm exactly there with you raz LMAO#the pain's basically gone and now i'm boooored. i'm BOOORED let me go exercise!!!#drains come out on thursday though woo woo
