本日はElmer Bernsteinからの繋がりで、米国よりGlen Millerをご紹介していきます。

Glen Miller(グレン・ミラー)とは、1904年米アイオワ州生まれのジャズミュージシャン、作曲家、アレンジャー。

少年時代にトロンボーンを始め、地元のオーケストラで演奏を始める。大学に進学するもあっさり中退。プロのミュージシャンとして不遇の時代を過ごすも、やがてトミー・ドーシーやベニー・グッドマン、レッド・ニコルスなどの音楽家と親交を結び、1937年に「グレン・ミラー・オーケストラ」を結成。1938年にブルーバード・レコードと契約し、「ムーンライト・セレナーデ」「茶色の小瓶」「イン・ザ・ムード」「チャタヌーガ・チュー・チュー」など次々とヒット曲を発表し、バンドリーダー、作曲家、編曲家として絶大なる人気を博した。

第二次世界大戦の勃発に伴い軍隊に入隊。積極的に慰問演奏を続けていたが、1944年英国→仏に飛び立った際に消息を断つ。(エンジン故障が有力説)

「In The Mood」をはじめ、数々のヒット曲を放ったが、1941年に録音された「チャタヌーガ・チュー・チュー」は、同バンドが出演した映画銀嶺セレナーデの主題歌であり、レコードはおよそ120万枚販売。これを記念して1942年にRCAレコードからゴールドディスクが授与され、これがゴールドディスク第1号とされれています。

本日は世界初のゴールドディスクに認定された代表曲「Chattanooga Choo Choo」を本人出演の映画とともにお送りします。2:39〜の口笛からのコーラスが幸せな気分にさせてくれます。
