Hidden Figures #3 (Wandering Rocks by Tony Smith) || IV.
By this point in Skyclad and I's rolling through the park - while we'd gotten through the first couple of figures I'd wanted to pose with with no disturbances by passersby - as we prepared to move on to the next, a wild Entitled-To-Take-A-Stance Seattlite appeared and in peak form. I saw the man and his companion approaching and quickly pulled my tulle skirt - which doubled as my modesty garment - as we waited for them to pass. Seeing us taking photos and posing within the structure, Perre's Ventaglio III at the moment, he took quite the umprage with what we were up and- instead of simply raising an eyebrow and carrying along with his early morning walk, made sure to make loud, passive aggressive commentary about us posing within the structures, "Doing it for 'the 'Gram'" and engaging in "anything for social media".
.
Little did he know how he was casually exhibiting one of the fascinating dichotomies I've noticed from some in the area that helped inspire the idea for Hidden Figures in the first place: We love art, live in an area where art surrounds us and where art can be found all over, and we have no problem with art....but if we see people making it in a way they "shouldn't be", we must inform them with a scoffing air of "You clearly don't know how to appreciate this the /right/ way." "Not that way and not in my public space," the man's reaction to us conveyed as he continued to chastise two artists that dared to create in "his" space, interrupting his peaceful morning stroll - so much so that he chastised all the way up the path until the two saw someone they could point us out to so that person knew what we were "up to". (I wonder how he feels about Banksy or Keith Herring and if he thought they were truly ruining the walls of the buildings they created on...I wonder how his friends responded when he told them later how he "busted a couple of people within sculptures at the park", minding their own business and quietly taking photos at 7 in the morning...and similarly wonder if his companion was used to his aggressively condescending behavior or was too embarrassed to say anything to him about exhibiting it...but I digress...).
.
We deduced that he likely let a security guard know that we were "up to something" within the sculptures because, as we rounded the bend up to where Wandering Rocks was stationed, Skyclad and I noticed that security guard walking slowly, keeping an extra eye on us as we made our way up the park and stopped at one more piece along the way. Rocks was one of the main pieces I knew I wanted to pose with before we arrived there so when we finally made it there, Skyclad and I were cautious to stay outside of its roped boundaries so that we could get at least some shots with it in case the now-on-alert security guard shooed us along. Though they weren't exactly what I had envisioned, the shots quickly snapped looked lovely...but I knew there was more I had to say, more I had to give to the scene - a few images I had seen in my head that I needed to bring to life.
Tumblr media
As we continued working around the ropes, I noticed the security guard start to round the bend we'd just come from where I knew he wouldn't be able to see us. If I didn't at least try to get within the ropes and closer to the pieces, I knew that I'd leave the park with regret over not being able to create the images I saw in my head that moved me the most... Besides, how many of our favorite art pieces have been made by breaking a rule or two? All I wanted to do was interact with the Olympic Park sculptures with reverance and respect, taking their art and letting them inspire me.
.
I told Skyclad I was going to just hop in and pose quickly, that I wouldn't feel like I did as much as I could have with Wandering Rocks if I didn't at least try to get closer to them and I'm so grateful they agreed. "I'll just keep hitting the shutter button", they said, so that whatever happened, we got at least a couple of the images I wanted to make the most. And here, my pre-photo day visions came in handy as I ran straight to the positions I knew I wanted to execute.
.
And while ultimately the situation was low stakes (truly, the worst that could've happened would be that we'd be asked to leave), I felt exhilarated - bravely taking the chance to create art the way I wanted to, engaging in artistic "debauchery" to create something that was meaningful. While I envisioned some of the photos where I ran through the pieces, they also were real moments of carefree liberation as I realized I was doing exactly what I wanted in that moment - a feeling I don't feel I experience often. In those moments I was right where I wanted to be doing exactly what I wanted to.

Primitivity and Post-Modernism response by Phanesia Pharel
Wow! What a wonderful curation. It really tied together a lot of things for me from the required viewing which was also awesome. One of the comments under the guerrilla girls video REALLY resonated with me. It was something along the lines of “How awesome to know that this exists! Why didn't I know about it?” But hey, at least I know about it now! I believe that learning should be difficult and that I should never really be comfortable with all the concepts that I am learning, I am by no means completely there with this week’s curation. I have a lot of questions and I want to hear what everyone has to say, but I also feel like there has been a lot that was easy to grasp.
 1. FIRST THOUGHTS ON GUERRILLA GIRLS AT YOKO ONOS MELTDOWN
I assumed this would be a video about Yoko Ono breaking down (breaking down when? I don’t know) I felt really bad because I only ever hear negative things about Yoko Ono or things tying her to her deceased husband despite her many accomplishments. I’m happy this was about many different ideas on the spectrum of feminism. I recently read a book called “We were feminist once, from RIOTT girl to cover girl the buying and selling of a political movement”. It was honestly beautiful and the author at one point raised the importance of impact over labeling, something I think this group does well.
 2.  Do you believe that the Guerilla Girls would have the same effect on the world without their masks?
No. They’d be targeted as individuals, attacked for their natural biases and people would focus less on the issues. It’s wonderful what they’re doing really. Rather than being a mouthpiece they literally just call out obvious sexism and people are suddenly thrown.
  3. What is it that most resonated with you out of the long list of activism they have done over the years & why?
I love that they are so for going against the grain. Being outside the norm and not fitting the mainstream mold.
“What do you do when the system you attack embraces you?” This is something that was said that I’ve been thinking about. The ability for black women to do what they’re doing now is progress and no we aren’t where we need to be but how do I maneuver in a system that publicly “supports” me (and in personal artistic endeavors has received my art well). It’s tough. I don’t have the answer but it’s nice to know someone else is asking it.
  FINAL THOUGHTS ON GEURRILLA GIRLS-
Martin Luther who said, “weeds grow faster than good flowers” in regard to women is a man who is considered progressive. How scary. It’s wonderful to live in a country and time where women can meet like this. “It’s better to be safe than free” a sad philosophical thought that I ponder constantly. I wonder what the roots of Guerrilla Girls is, is it primitive or bestial? Perhaps it’s both?  27 years for people to say “women” oh I get it…wow. I was at a playwriting conference when the head of the conference stated “It’s like night and day, society can’t exist one without the other. Yet that’s what we’ve done by excluding the voices of half of our species.” Susie Westfall. It’s honestly sad that despite how “far” we’ve come we are not yet at the point to understand this. Commercialization or progress? I wonder this not only with guerrilla girls but with all of feminism. At the end of the day the MET and MOMA are still going to the pockets of rich white men. “Old habits die really hard”. Museums are inherently capitalist, Art is so crucial to humanity-yet its heteronormative and white. LMAO THE ESTROGEN BOMB IT’S A JOKE BUT DAMN… 2008 till vibrators in texas and still banned in Alabama.
  SNL THOUGHTS-
 1.     Ariana Grande is the future of pop music.
2.     Humor is a wonderful way of discussing politics. Let’s think to Margret cho and WANDA SYKES’S space program. She released this during the bush presidency, a time when Americans really felt down and disappointed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC7tRE4BV14
I for one believe standup is a form of theatre.
3.     SNL does a great job (sometimes) of discussing social issues. I love how “This is not a feminist” song speaks to the pressures of constructing mainstream feminism art. The scarlet Johansson video was hilarious because it feels so true! I mean think about it, I know not everyone is Barnard but in my experience even in spaces catered for women men take the lead. I love how Octavia spencer talks about racial casting in a quick but funny way. Yet these things are serious-but they’re also hysterical.
 Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Ted Talk.
I think sexism is different dependent on a country. Due to its histories. “We should all be feminists” yes. I think it’s really important to deconstruct why people are so opposed to equality. I once had a man tell me that housewives are better for children because men can bring the dough and women can raise the child. He never mentioned the possibility of roles being reversed or understanding the social consequence of placing financial security in one’s hands.
  QUEEEN-
A BOP! I love this song! I’ve known about this video for quite some time but after all our talk about museums the hidden messages are really starting to sink in with me. Janelle Monae not only attacks racism but misgynoir a specific form of sexism that targets black women.  I think the afro futurist movement is multi-faceted and takes place in several forms. I would argue that Jungle Pussy, SZA and Solange are all so different but push toward a future of black intellect and freedom. I do think we are on the verge of a black renaissance of some sort. Not that this would be the first or the last.
One last funny video when combining race, feminism and comedy- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ociMBfkDG1w
I really wish I could write down all my thoughts but I think I need time to decompress and prepare for the discussion in class.
