Summary of this long-ass post: If u wanna join my Freerice Group, the joining code is: 2ZJPCWMH and anyone & everyone is welcome to join!
This is probably incredibly sick and f*cked-up of me and like a very vile part of my ED-brain, but one way I try to assuage the intense guilt I feel from restricting/fasting (seemingly) by choice, while there are devastating & unspeakably horrific hunger & starvation crises occurring throughout the world, is by spending my free time doing those "click-to-help" donation site thingies to fund aid and food donations to starving populations (the two I use most are Arab.org in their Click-To-Help section https://arab.org/click-to-help/palestine/ and The Hunger Site (although I have read some very sus things about them on reddit??? I only really resort to this one bc my middle school health teacher had us do this one every day for a week, so I implicitly trusted her judgment for years bc she was known for having 6 prior mar!juana possessions on her record).
Anyways, the other thing I do daily is I play the Freerice game (you can find it on the World Food Programme Website). It's a free trivia game where as you play, you generate donations (the site was previously were funded purely by ads, but recently they were able to acquire several large sponsors to cover the donations instead, since they said it's more consistent and reliable that way) for the World Food Programme, which uses the money to organize and distribute food aid all over the world-- but especially to populations suffering from emergency-level food insecurity and starvation rates (such as in Palestine, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, etc-- there's a list on the WFP website of the areas that are under the "Emergencies" section).
p.s. The "grain of rice" in the game don't represent actual real grains of rice, they're just a conceptual representation to help you visualize the worth of your donations adding up.
anyways. So what my mentally ill brain does is: for every "bowl of rice" (a certain donation amount) I do on Freerice, my ED-ass thinks, "Oh good, for every 'bowl' I 'fill' it's literally keeping me distracted from binge-eating and INSTEAD, all the food I COULD have been eating in that time I was playing-- I can use that distraction from eating to generate legit food donations for real starving people who actually WANT to eat and desperately NEED the nutrition. As far as coping-mechanisms go, this one isn't so bad!"
That's how my brain-fogged, guilt-ridden mind works. I'm so ashamed of choosing to deny myself food, when I know for a fact that there's stuff going on in the world like the Israeli government using forced-starvation as a tool to commit genocide against Palestinians by creating and maintaining a man-made famine. So i try to mentally justify my ED behavior by imagining that the time i spend not-eating while playing Freerice is a way of somehow magically transferring my ~potential food ingestion~ to another person somewhere else who ACTUALLY needs it.
ANYWAYS, my point to all this rambling is that I wanted to offer my Freerice Group Code to anyone on EDblr (or just anyone in general) who might want to join my Group and collectively track the donations we generate together :')
My Freerice Group name is "Rat Terrier Devotees" (bc I have a Teddy Roosevelt Terrier lol) and the Group Code is: 2ZJPCWMH Please feel free to join (regardless if you're EDblr or not, obvi)!

Play📱Learn 📚 Give 💚 Help us fill a bowl!
For this blog, I want to talk about a non-profit website, Freerice. This website is created by computer engineer John Breen, then donated to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), a humanitarian organization that is committed to ending hunger and achieving food security and improved nutrition by 2030.(https://www.wfp.org/overview) This website was launched in 2007, it combined education and charity, allowing people to fight world hunger with their knowledge(https://freerice.com/about-us).
Freerice provides trivia questions in multiple categories like math, languages, science, geography, etc., and 10 grains of rice will be donated to WFP for each correct answer. This system allows people to contribute even when they don’t have the financial ability. My teacher from my middle school introduced me to this website, and I have been using it on and off for the past few years. It gave me a great sense of achievement knowing that I’m able to help fight world hunger without donating my parent’s money. Freerice has raised more than 220 billion grains of rice ($1.8M worth of rice) over the past years. The website reached 1 million users in 2012 and has grown into a global community of 8 million players a year.(https://www.wfpusa.org/get-involved/) However, I question how much better the results would have been if they have better promoted their website.
From what I can find, Freerice has an active Facebook page and an active Twitter account. The Twitter account (https://twitter.com/Freerice) was created in May 2009, it has 11.6k followers and they post a few times a month. Unfortunately, most of the content is only getting less than 10 likes. The Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/freerice) is in a similar situation, with 62k followers, but only 10-20 likes for each post. There used to be an Instagram account, but the page may have been removed and merged with the Facebook page. The TikTok link on the Freerice website is for the WFP account that’s not specifically for Freerice, but there is only one video about Freerice in the last 30 videos they posted. As I was going through the Twitter page(https://www.twitch.tv/wfpfreerice/videos), I found out that there is actually a Twitch account created in November 2022, which I believe is a great way to reach out to the younger generation.
I would say that they have made different attempts to raise awareness, such as creating campaigns and challenges during the holiday seasons, posting visual content, reacting to comments, and even collaborating with famous chefs and influencers for interviews. They understand their targeted user base and try to get their attention through social media platforms that they are more active on. The strengths they have in the past campaigns are the visual and educational content, the posts with quotes and challenges brought the most attention to their pages. Another advantage is their user base is different from most other non-profits, so there's less competition between the organizations. According to Similarweb (https://www.similarweb.com/website/freerice.com/#demographics), 30.79% of the users of Freerice are between 18 and 24 years old (the website doesn't show the age distribution status of underage). Their biggest weakness is not using many trendy hashtags or keywords, therefore, the algorithm is not able to promote them to the correct audiences. I believe their posts will be more popular if they can create or “hop on some trends”. It’ll also be beneficial if the website can collaborate with certain schools for some events, creating a somewhat competitive environment for the trivia games, because the main audience group of the non-profit is younger people who can't support charities financially. Challenging influencers to create videos or live streams about the games or educational content can greatly promote the website too. In my opinion, WFP could create something that can be compared to the “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge” to raise awareness. They can even utilize the charity features on Twitch to set fundraisers, collaborate with streamers to do charity streams, and give the viewers event related emotes to further promote the website (https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/twitch-charity?language=en_US). In that case, the threats would be how to make the challenge as meaningful (if not more meaningful) as the ALS challenge and make sure the donations are transparent so it wouldn’t negatively impact the reputation of the organization.(https://sproutsocial.com/insights/social-media-swot-analysis/)
All in all, this is a non-profit that I think is contributing to a great cause while providing opportunities for people to expand their knowledge. I hope one day it'll get the attention it deserves, and reach their goal of ending world hunger by 2030.

Today I found out the FreeRice app has added a bunch of subjects. Basically you answer multiple choice questions and for every correct answer WFP donates rice to families in need. I’ve been playing for years and I highly recommend it if you like to learn fun facts or just want to help out.

Heyyy so I dunno if anyone's gonna see thissss buttttt there's this website called Freerice and basically it's where you can choose your category of fun little trivia questions to answer (it can be anything from history, art, other organizations, games, ext!) and for every question you get right it automatically donates 10 grains of rice! It's the little things that benefit others, so if your feeling generous please try it out! It's fun and honestly really easy :)

does anyone wanna join my Freerice group? Code to join: 2ZJPCWMH
So, like, Freerice is that trivia game that the World Food Programme does to raise money to acquire & distribute food donations to hungry populations around the world, especially in areas with emergency-level starvation rates and potential/imminent famine (like Palestine, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, for example).
(It used to generate money purely through ads, but more recently they've secured several sponsors to fund the donations their site generates instead, bc it's apparently more reliable and consistent that way.)
My Freerice group name is "Rat Terrier Devotees" (because I have a Teddy Roosevelt Terrier) and the code to join is: 2ZJPCWMH

Freerice - Website Launched 2007
Tumblr media
(Image Copyright Freerice and the United Nations World Food Programme)
Freerice, originally penned FreeRice, is a web-based application that allows users to participate in a myriad of categories, multiple choice quizzes whose correct answers translate to donations of rice to communities in need. For every question the user answers correctly at any category, at any difficulty level, results in 10 grains of rice donated via the United Nations World Food Programme.
I remember first being introduced to this program when I was in high school in the early 2010s and there's a nice feeling about seeing a production like this still going along almost a couple decades after launch. Language arts teachers specifically at my school really enjoyed its use to help with vocabulary and as the only French student who didn't get into honors society for French I was pleased that it at least allowed my struggling foreign language student self pass. I also remember having competitions between myself and my classmates, especially my one friend in the class, to see who could earn the most grains of rice during our computer lab/ library time session. The website now seems to play to the strength of kind hearts and competitive teens in hosting events that challenge users to participate in gaining a goal grain count. It would be interesting given the global events happening currently between Gaza and Congo to see how organizations like Freerice respond in their Food Programme efforts.
Rather than this being an application used in frequency in a public library space when they would probably much rather indulge in Roblox, I could see this being something that we discuss in conversation with school teachers. Considering the range of categories a user of the site can quiz with, there could be a range of opportunities in the classroom and perhaps beyond given proper planning and initiative.

FREE RICE - Official UN World Food Program free nonprofit game that Feeds those in Need!! https://freerice.com/
Tumblr media
What does it do?
You play simple trivia games in-browser, and for every correct answer you will help raise "rice" (meaning money to go into emergency relief such as rice and other foods) to help feed those most in need.
Freerice officially works with the United Nations World Food Program (see: https://unric.org/en/freerice/ ), which serves, as of writing:
State of Palestine
Afghanistan
Ethiopia
Ukraine
Yemen
See more listed here: https://www.wfp.org/emergencies, as linked from Freerice
How does it work?
Private sponsors now match the rice grains earned in the game. Every question you answer correctly earns 10 grains of rice, triggering a financial payment to WFP. The donations generated through Freerice help support WFP's work in emergencies around the world. (source: https://freerice.com/frequently-asked-questions )
100% of all funds generated via Freerice go to the World Food Programme. Freerice does not earn or keep any money it raises.(source: https://freerice.com/about-us)

So, a lot of you have heard of arab.org, a site where you can click a button to help Palestine for free. But did you know they have other buttons as well?
Children, Women, Poverty, Environment, and Refugees
According to their numbers (which you can see when you click on "proof" for each charity category), their donations for Palestine went up a lot in the fourth quarter of 2023. And I mean truly a lot. From January till September of 2023 they had a combined click count of 66.484. That's 66k clicks in 9 months. Then from October till December they had 570.859 clicks. That's 570k in 3 month. That's an increase of more than 2500% a month!
The clicks for their other charity categories also saw a steep incline, but none as much as Palestine. For example, Environment reached 183.585 clicks, Women 170.029 clicks, Poverty 163.130 clicks, and Refugees 167.475 clicks. These are great numbers and all are more than in the beginning of 2023, but they are far below Palestine.
Clicking these buttons doesn't take a lot of time and it does make a real impact. The next time you click for Palestine, consider the other buttons too.
(In case you've never heard of arab.org, here's how it works: When you visit the website, it gets paid to show you adds. It then donates that money to a variety of charities. The UNRWA, UNHCR, UNDP, UN Women, GreenPeace, and UNICEF. There's also other websites that operate like this. The WFP's FreeRice used this same model until recently, for example.)
