Sequences rise and fall with their own rhyme and reason, unrelated to any musical structure or sense of narrative. Coil - Queens of the Circulating Library  " “It’s in the trees, it’s coming,” “Return the marble index,” “Return books not burn books” and “The forest is a college, each tree a university”, delivered somewhere between a Zen koan and a militant chant, offer further clues before settling into nearly 40-minutes of eye-crossing drones. In those few sentences, Coil are offering you an alchemical index of their fascinations and obsessions, for those who know how to listen. The titular “queens” feels like a nod to their loud-and-proud homosexuality, which they’ve been quite outspoken about since their inception in the early ’80s. Unabashed queerness feels fairly de rigeur in 2023, but was probably still somewhat contentious even in 2000 when Queens of the Circulating Library was first released. Daniel Teruggi - Sphæra (Recollections GRM) "Picture the air, rare and clear, at the Kármán Line, beginning to tremble, shiver and shake. Lightning crashes, thunder sounds, rain begins to fall on bare earth, creating a river of mud, cascading into the sea. Or, perhaps, a radiant crystal, crafted from passing an electrical spark through a noble gas." My review of this wonderful electroacoustic/early electronic album from Daniel Teruggi, who would go on to become director of the GRM from 1997 to 2017 and director for research and experimentation at Ina from 2001 -2016. Klaus Schulze's sublime first solo album came out on this day in 1972. The Teisco organ in lieu of sequencers and synths give Irrlicht more of a Gothic sci-fi feel than anything cybernetic or cyberpunk - like coming across some rough hewn cathedral on some distant alien planet, distant suns piercing through poisonous crimson skies to cast stained glass shadows. Ominous and otherworldly yet tranquil and serene. STILL a highlight of ambient music several years before the term would be coined in earnest. Recommended for fans of Popol Vuh or later dark ambient like Steve Roach or Vidna Obmana. Couple questions: 1. Any Irrlicht fans out there? 2. Surprisingly strong day for Pop Music. Ended up digging Tove Styrke's new one, Hard, more than i thought i would with its super bright, sugary arrangements and emotional lyrics. Angel Olsen returns with a sweet, sometimes heartbreaking, queer country record! Policas Madness is a followup to 2020s When We Stay Alive, detailing the struggles of recovering from A SHATTERED SPINE. Sounds like she lost her shit, a bit, but madness has never sounded better. Plus, it was partially mixed by an AI! Post Malones Twelve Carat Toothache is better than i thought itd be, also. Less Trap bullshit, more piano bangers. Also some absolutely mesmerizing ambient from Tyresta on the unmissable @pastinside . Finally, some beautifully, grindy death metal on Artificial Brains self-titled for the also unmissable Profound Lore. Thats all ive had a chance to hear so far today. Leviathan (In Times Of) is a short and very sweet EP by the electronic duo of Max Lewis and Mirza Ramic. Built around tender, plaintiff piano miniatures like something from Erik Satie’s reveries or Nils Frahm’s field recorder, these delicate melodies are then dropped into a digital infinity, a deep gravity well of digital reverb, all made the more interesting with little flourishes of strings and the occasional sound manipulation.
